Had a thought: Grian, if we go with his common fan-interpretation as an avian (i.e. a bird-human hybrid of some variety), wouldn’t have an instinctual fear of heights the same way humans do (because humans + heights = danger of death). For a fully-grown avian, there is no danger. They can fly. Even young ones wouldn’t have much of an awareness of any inherent risk, in the way that toddlers have no concept of their own mortality and give adults heart attacks all the time. 

Now imagine Avian Grian in Third Life, his wings bound or made inaccessible in some way to put him on even footing with everyone else. Maybe he doesn’t even remember he has them. Think of how, in a world where death is around every corner, he doesn’t have the same awareness of risk that his compatriots do. Falls are one of the most common causes of injury, and even a sprained ankle could cause some serious issues in a death game. 

Maybe he made Scar scared for him with his unawareness. It’s so natural to Scar to be aware of heights, and Grian is just not. Is just different.

Maybe he got confused the first time he took fall damage, having expected - something else. He doesn’t know what, but something.

Maybe he saw that crevice in the desert that Scar died in and it just didn’t register. 

And maybe, even at the end, at the edge of that cliff, his instincts wouldn’t let him feel afraid. Maybe he tipped over, knowing that his death was coming, but unable to even touch base with that natural fear all living beings share. Unfeeling.

Maybe he felt a bit like a monster for it.

Hello! Hunger Au is incredible and is currently taking up a large portion of my brain space, it's so good. Calling back to a previous ask you answered about the minecraft soundtrack kind of being like music that the universe sings to itself, I thought you might be interested to know the upcoming 1.21 update has not only 2 new discs being added, but also many new additions to the soundtrack, one of which is titled "Watcher". I just thought it was fun little fact. Hope your day is well

hit the continent running (engines were humming) - SMPEarth mixed-format fic where Emperor Philza discusses how the Antarctic Empire got where it is in the present day. Has been described as "like a wartime action novel" and is basically like if worldbuilding about Antarctic survival and fighter planes was distilled into 15k words. Probably my favorite Emerald Duo I've ever written.

rings of flowers round your eyes - Hermitcraft fic where Grian is an art thief, Scar is a magical painting, and the vault Grian just broke into has just trapped him inside with his quarry. This was an exercise in horror writing and also art descriptions and also complete failures of wine descriptions that do not at all hold up under analysis, dear god.

sunlight over me no matter what i do - Hermitcraft/Traffic Series fic where Grian decides to amputate his own wings because it's the only way to sever himself from Watcher influence. Written for Hermit Horror Week and has some POV weirdness that was super fun to write.

oxygen is getting low (one last round before we go) - Dream SMP fic where Philza, a marine biologist, is stranded in an underwater base in the Marianas Trench and waiting to run out of life support. This is clearly the perfect time to discover that deep sea merpeople such as Technoblade exist... especially when those merpeople can talk to you in your dreams. Someone in the bookmarks for this one said it changed their outlook on grief/death and I hold that comment closely to this day.

will the curse be reversed if you say it backwards - Hermitcraft/Traffic series fic that is actually a recursive fanfic of @definitelynotshouting's fic lost in the dark (he's got a heavy heart), also known as Hunger AU. Grian is recovering from a near-death experience on a server that doubles as an enormous music festival, with the help of a Watcher who shares his face. Grian is having confusing encounters with possibly-hallucinatory old friends, and strangers who seem very intent on talking to him, and he thinks things would be much easier if the Watcher with him wasn't refusing to eat properly - but things are a lot more complicated than he'd like to believe they are, really. Probably my favorite recursive fic I've written: I listened to so many songs for it that I could've created a Spotify playlist about it.

Okay i let this one percolate for a little bit bc i didnt immediately have anything i could like, coherently speak abt at the time, but i do actually think this could be interesting for yall to hear???

So in hunger au, the universe is quasi-sentient, and all the entities within it (Players, Watchers, Listeners, even Seekers when they were still alive) are like... its fruiting bodies, if we wanna put it in fungal terms, so to speak. Entities are the universe's way of exploring, understanding, and experiencing itself; because of this, everything is connected to it via the Greater Code in some capacity. (For newly Spawned Players especially, this connection is very deep and strong-- its what teaches them how to survive, how to function on their own; its what urges them to make that first crafter and begin playing the game, to learn and to keep learning. I've likened it before to something of a mental umbilical cord, of sorts, that fades over time as the Player emerges into their own.)

The point here though is that everything in the universe is the universe, and is therefore technically the universe speaking to itself, over and over and over again, in many different voices.

Which means that, functionally, there is only one native language in this universe.

This doesnt mean multiple languages dont exist, but the thing is, theyre all conlangs!! Language is in itself a form of play-- its not uncommon at all for Players to develop their own languages, unique dialects, and body-language that are all very server(or even individual)-specific

I dont really have a name for this universal language (frankly id probably just borrow it from galactic; as i told @/raichett when it came up in dms the other night, my skills really do not lie in making conlangs atm 😂😂😂😂😂) but i thought that would be fun to toss out there for you guys to munch on as i edit hunger au chap 10 :] thanks for asking!!!
