      thinking about the ten things that duri couldn’t leave without felt a bit hard, to say the least. he wasn’t entirely sure if he was able to boil down just ten different things because it felt like there was a lot that he could potentially list off. but, instead, he had to name just ten things, so it actually took him a while to think about before he could even film the video. one thing that kind of sucked, to say the least, was that he couldn’t name kai, considering that could probably be seen as suspicious. so, that removed something from the list that he was creating inside of his head for things that he would be able to list off. but, all he knew that it was in no particular order and was more so what just had come to him. he could only hope that it would make sense. due to the fact that he was indeed filming this in more of a vlog style type of way, he dressed up a lot more casual to welcome viewers into his shared home with his “roommate”. nonetheless, he started the camera to begin his ten things i can’t live without video for base online. 

“hello! i’m knight’s duri!” he greets, before bowing towards the camera. “today, i’m going to talk about ten things i can’t live without and show you some of them! this is also in no particular order, just what comes to me!” he explained. “so, welcome to my home!” he said, before giggling softly. he made his way over to where the animals were, tags wagging as duri approached them and recorded them. he got down to their level, giggling softly. “one of the ten things are the pets!” he said. “this one is kangaroo,” he points the shiba inu, “this one is peanut butter,” he points to the frenchie, “and this one is moose!” he says, pointing to the bernedoodle. “we also have finn and angel!” he saiid, pointing to them individually with another giggle. “finn and angel are my roommate maverick’s dogs,” he says. obviously they were also duri’s dogs, but he had to call his boyfriend his ‘roommate’ for... purposes. “we also have another animal in this house... where is she...” he saying, before making noises with his mouth, only to find her by a window. “ah, there she is! my roommate and i rescued her! i named her tteokbokki because i thought she looked like tteobokki,” he explained before giggling once more. he petted the fluffy orange tabby cat, a pur coming from her. he make his way over to the next thing, which was close by, a gallery wall full of family photos. “next on the list is my family!” he said. this was probably an obvious choice, with how much he’s talk about them. he placed himself behind the camera, before showing off photos. he pointed to each photo, telling the camera who was who. explaining a few things, like his parents, why his uncle and aunt raised him. “they really mean a lot to me because they’ve always been there for me and supported me in everything that i’ve done! so, i wouldn’t be able to live without them,” he said, truly getting sappy. 

the next place he takes the camera is into the office on the first floor, where all the music equipment is situated. “next on the list is... music!” he said, laughing softly. “ah, music really means a lot to me... i learned so much about music when i was younger and really studied it. i couldn’t live without music... without making music, it really makes me happy, and i hope my music makes people happy too!” he said. which would probably be a bit hard, anyways, since a lot of his ballads probably aren’t technically happy. but, still, maybe hearing his voice did? who knows. “i think that would lead into the next item that i can’t live without,” he said, before picking up an airpods case. “airpods! so i can listen to music!” he said, giggling softly. “i count any type of buds on this part, just because it all counts, right? i really like listening to music... if there was no more music, i don’t know what i would do...” he said, another giggle leaving his lips. “i also keep all my books in here... which is another thing that i can’t live without! i quite like reading, it really keeps my mind going. that’s not an odd choice, right?” he questioned as if the viewers could answer him right now, a laugh soon leaving his lips. he would leave the office to move onto his next set of things, this time, the kitchen. 

“the kitchen! my next thing is cooking!” he said. “i’ve always enjoyed cooking and just being in the kitchen, something that i learned from my family. so, i’ve gotten a lot of knowledge on cooking and baking from them,” he said, nodding a bit. “i guess you could guess that right?” he said, giggling once more. he was sure there would be an edit on the screen talking about him being a masterchef, something that editors liked to throw in as a brag. “the next thing is coffee! ah, i love coffee, i can’t be without it,” he said, showing off a coffee machine that duri and kai have in the house. “it really keeps me going all day with busy schedules, or on days when i’m just lounging around at home. i can have coffee at any time!” he nodded confidently. before he’d leave the kitchen, those being the only thing in that room that he could think about when it comes to what he can’t live without. before he’d go for something else, he would pass by the grand piano, showing it. “piano is the next thing that i can’t live without!” he confirmed to the camera. “i can play the piano, guitar, and violin. but, piano is by far my favorite instrument. if anything, i can live without the guitar and violin, but i wouldn’t be able to without the piano. it’s really just my favorite of all time! i really enjoy just sitting down and playing sometimes,” he explained. “you can probably tell how much i like the piano due to my composition of all of my life, right?” he asked, giggling a bit to himself, before heading upstairs. 

duri would head to the shared bedroom, which people wouldn’t know is a shared bedroom and just think that it was duri’s room. following after him came tteokbokki, a curious cat that wanted to see what exactly he was doing. duri makes his way over to where he keeps the two dog plushies that he has, the one from his parents, and the one from joosung. he picks up the one from his parents, showing it off to the camera. “this is a dog plushie from my parents, another item that i’m unable to live without. it’s one of the last remaining gifts from them and i brought everywhere with me as a child. on the nights that i have trouble sleeping or days i need more comfort, i reach for this because it’s like they’re with me. so, i always keep this safe, because i can’t live without it,” he explained, clearly getting sentimental, and placing it back in it’s safe spot. tteokbokki was able to reach these things, but she’d most likely never actually touch them. “the second dog plushie is from element’s sun! that one means a lot to me as well, he just got it for me for my last birthday!” he exclaimed, giggling. now, he had one more thing to list off, and he knew what to show. he made his way to the linen closet, where he would show off all the neatly folded blankets. “do you see all the blankets?” he asked. “blankets is the final thing that i can’t live without! i get really cold easily, so having blankets is really essential to me... i also think i have a bad habit of buying them. but, maverick might need some as well or when my niece and nephew stay over, it’s good for that too!” he said with a soft giggle. 

he made his way back into the bedroom, where he’d sit down on the bed with the camera pointed at him. “that’s the ten things that i can’t live without! thank you for watching!” he said, giggling softly. he waved bye to the camera, a big smile upon his face, “bye bye!” he says, before ending it with a happy laugh, and shutting the camera off. he’d be sure to give the recording to his manager to give it to base.

Maybe I’m a monster, but all the posts of pandemic puppies have annoyed me. As have the calls from friends that precede them. “I’ve got news!” no longer applies to just engagements and pregnancy but rescue mutts and $4,000 bernedoodles. It’s not that I don’t find all these new dogs adorable — I do. It’s just that with everyone I e-meet, it feels like I’m one step closer to succumbing to my family’s command: that we get a dog, too.

Thirty-one days into quarantine, they ambushed me after the 31st dinner I’d cooked in a row, with a PowerPoint presentation entitled “WHY WE SHOULD GET A DOG,” littered with pictures of irresistible pups and prayer-hand emoji. My sweet little 11-year-old daughter poured her heart and soul into these slides and argued her case like an extra-small RBG, and still: Being the cold-hearted mother I guess I am, I remained unconvinced. And told her so. And made her cry.

I didn’t want a dog pre-COVID, and I don’t want one post-COVID, though I admit I can see the appeal of a dog mid-COVID.

The begging continued. My kids told me I’m “ruining everything.” In the heat of quarantine bliss my husband said he wants a dog so that when we get divorced he has someone who loves him. Around Day 120, I semi-acquiesced: Okay. We can get a dog, I said, on one condition — and one word: DOGSHARE. Part-time. Splitsies. A cuddly King Charles or bark-y beagle, maybe even a giant Newfoundland (please God, anything but a golden retriever) that will shuttle evenly between two loving, likeminded homes, like the child of an amicable divorce. My friend Samantha is onboard. She lives by San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. Our urban dog would have a beach house!

It’s an idea I’d been chewing on for a while. It sounds dreamy. All that puppy love and affection for half the price. The pros appear plenty. Week on, week off. No $35/hour dogsitters. No pleading with friends to pleaaase watch Wobbles. We could hike any trail! Loll on any beach! Rent any Airbnb. Fly back east to visit family without spending money to board a dog and a plane. The cons seemed nonexistent, until I started talking about it. “Once you have a dog, you’re not going to want to share her,” warned Nina, snuggling her new Cockapoo the other night on Zoom. “It won’t know its true owners,” counseled Maddy. “The dog will get confused.” Bullshit! (Which, I declared, I don’t want to pick up either.)

I rang a professional dog person. “Am I being selfish?” I asked Clive Wynne, a behavioral scientist, founding director of the Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University, and author of the 2019 book Dog Is Love. “Oh, I don’t think so,” he assured. “Dogs experience strong emotional connections, but they also come into and out of relationships easily. I see no reason at all that a dog couldn’t find it tremendously satisfying. I bet the dog would be thrilled!”

In his three-decade career, Dr. Wynne has never known anyone to dogshare, he said, but it sounds like a decent antidote to the modern ill of dog loneliness. In normal, non-quarantined times, “We bring dogs into our busy lives, then treat them like Wii consoles,” he said. “Alexa doesn’t get depressed if you don’t speak to her for a week, but a dog does.” A dog shared across two parties, he reasoned, is better than a dog too often ignored by one. After all, what will become of all the pandemic pups once the pandemic ends (if it ever ends) and their owners get back to their busy lives?

After mulling it over, Cameron Woo, co-founder of long-running magazine The Bark, agreed. “The traditional concept of the nuclear family has been turned upside down … What we consider a traditional dog’s family could, too.”

Woo certainly has a point. Why, in a world where we share cars and houses and clothes, hasn’t this clearly win-win notion of dogsharing caught on?Services like Copuppy and Let’s Share a Dog cropped up several years ago, allowing strangers to enjoy a furry fling for a walk or a weekend, but neither ever really took off. Breakups often lead to embattled co-custody of pets, and the legal contracts that go with it. So why not two families willing to share a Fido — forever — from the get-go?

“It’s not the dogs, it’s the humans,” said Dr. Wynne. Consistency is key for dogs, which calls for agreement among people. How many walks a day? Is the dog allowed on the couch? At the table? Is that $7,000 surgery necessary? Dogsharing wouldn’t work for everybody, he warned.

It works for Heather McIlhany. “It’s the freaking best,” said the D.C.-based marketing executive. She and her ex-boyfriend share two Jack Russell mixes, swapping every week and splitting all expenses. Just because she loves having her dogs half time doesn’t mean she loves them any less, she points out. “A dog shouldn’t be treated like an end table. When I’m with Cora and Crash, we go for long walks. But they also puke on the couch, bark at every falling leaf. If I had them every week, it might feel like a burden.” Sure, she gets “a little pang” watching the dogs run into her ex’s house, nary a look back, and since the pandemic began it’s been lonelier. But then they’re reunited and it feels so good. “I tell everyone they should set their life up this way!”

Not all experts think such a set up affords a good dog life, though. Crossing town every two weeks would be “disruptive” for all but the most resilient dogs, said Dr. Stephanie Borns-Weil, a veterinary behaviorist at Tufts’ Cummings Medical Center. “You have to think not just how it’s going to be for you — but how it’s going to be for the dog.”

For Lulu, a French bulldog in San Francisco, it’s been fabulous. “She has two families,” said Suma Gona, a psychiatrist. For the last ten years, they’ve split the week with another couple. “I thought it was crazy, but they just fell in love with Lulu. They take her to acupuncture! She has this whole other life!” At 14, it has also been a long life. No doubt due, in part, to all the attention that’s come from their unique arrangement — which will likely expire with Lulu. “The kids want to get another dog, but I don’t know …” said Dr. Gona, considering the full-time commitment. “That would be a lot.”

My fear exactly. Dogs are work! I whined to Dr. Borns-Weil. “Well, I also have a ball python,” she offered. “They like to wrap around your arm and you only have to feed them once a week.” (Albeit “a defrosted medium-size rat.”) I floated the option to my family.

They prefer a dog. “But I’ll take a snake,” said my 8-year-old, “if we don’t have to share it.”

Mornings Around Here: Liz and Lego

Welcome back to our series on morning routines where we highlight women around the city and talk to them about what their morning routines look like with their dog. No two mornings are alike and they shouldn’t be! A lot of people hope that dogs will help to bring routine and structure into our lives, to bring joy into mornings, to get up early, to lounge a little longer - whatever it is, it’s your sacred ritual. It’s designed to fit your life and your dogs’s. We’re just here to show how many different faces it can take on.

This week, we chatted with Liz, one of the fabulous models from our shoot about life in New York with her playful and hilarious puppy Lego and work as a graphic designer at Myro. Liz has a tattoo of a lego on her wrist, but you’ll have to find out for yourself which came first - the puppy or the tattoo. Let’s get into it.

“It’s funny, as a kid I spent most of my time building with Legos… how fitting right?”

How long have you been in New York? 

Well technically I grew up in New York on Long Island, but I’ve lived in Bushwick for 5-6 years now. 

You’re a graphic designer - have you always been a creative person? What drew you to graphic design in particular? 

Oh yeah, for sure – it runs in my blood. My parents were both creatives; my dad worked for Hearst Magazines in their print management department for 25 years, and my mom was a medical copywriter for several of the big name advertising firms in the city. 

It’s funny, as a kid I spent most of my time building with Legos… how fitting right? Legos made me obsessed with the ability to create. It all kind of just went from there. 

You’ve worked at a bunch of different places and you currently work at Myro, a plant-powered, refillable deodorant brand. What do you love most about working in a startup environment? 

Yeah, I’ve worked for a few startups at this point; Plated, sweetgreen and now Myro. To be honest, my favorite part of the startup life is the culture. I am able to do what I do and LOVE what I do because of the people I work with.

Graphic design requires a pretty creative mind - where do you go when you’re looking for inspiration in both your professional and personal life? 

The best place to find inspiration in my mind is just walking around the city. I always see something that catches my eye, whether it be the outfit on the person walking in front of me, or a wheatpaste ad posted up on the green walls of a construction site. 

When we had you on set, your outfits mixed patterns and colors and textures in really fun and interesting ways. Who are you style icons and fashion inspiration?

It’s a real mix for me. I’m really into this one influencer Suzie Riemer’s(sweetsuzieq) style, and eclectic mix of wild graphic tee’s and color patterned coats/bottoms. At the end of the day though, I feel like my coworkers influence my style a lot as well. We’re always sharing the latest drops of clothing from different brands like pleasures and braindead.

Let’s talk about Lego because that puppy is so f’ing happy. When did you first decide to get a dog and how did you go about that process?

I’ve been in Bushwick now for over five years, and felt that I needed a change in my life. It was either move across the country or get a dog. I first started seeing bernedoodles in the street around the time I decided to get a dog and immediately became obsessed with them. I kept checking adoption agencies and finally came across Lego’s profile on pet finder. I fell in love at first glance and had to meet him. 

On set, Lego was so curious and happy and probably the most social dog we had there that day. How would you describe Lego’s personality?

Lego is such a sweetheart, I’ve never met a more passionate, cuddly, quirky pup in my life. I also would like to think that I had something to do with his personality being so great. ;)

Alright, let’s talk about Lego’s name. I noticed you have a lego tattoo on your wrist. What came first - the tattoo or the dog?

The Lego tattoo came first – it was my first tattoo. My dad actually gave me the idea to name my first dog Lego… little did he know I was actually in the process of going to meet Lego at that point. 

Lego is clearly beyond obsessed with you (and it’s obvious the infatuation goes both ways).  In what ways do you think the two of you complement one another? 

We’re each other’s hype man for SURE. We’re also the perfect cuddle buddies. So many people have told me that Lego always seems to be on the same page as me, almost as if he could read my mind… I wish.

Lego’s still technically a puppy. What’s been the most unexpected part of puppyhood?

In the beginning when I first got him, it was so painful to crate train him. The look he gave me when I would shut the crate door, was just the most depressing thing. And then the crying… yeah, it wasn’t great. 

And New York isn’t the easiest place in the world to raise a dog. What’s been the hardest part of having Lego with you in New York City?

The hardest part for me is planning ahead. I can’t be as spontaneous as I used to be with grabbing drinks or hanging out after work because most places aren’t dog friendly in New York. 

What are some of your favorite activities to do together on weekends or when you have a bit more time on your hands?

Now that it’s off season at Rockaway, I like to bring Lego to beach 90. He LOVES to dig in the sand.

What time do the two of you wake up every morning?

We wake up at 8:15, sometimes earlier depending on how playful Lego is when he wakes up.

Are you guys early birds or night owls?

On the weekends, we are total early birds!

Does he sleep in your bed?

Of course! He loves to snuggle with me, although he doesn’t stay that way for long, as he likes to move around a lot throughout the night.

What's the first thing you do every day?

I’m such a millennial, I check my phone :(

And what's the first thing you two do together every day? We play for a few minutes before I actually need to get up for work.

What's for breakfast?

For me, it depends on my mood. But for Lego, he has Wellness Complete Health Chicken, Oatmeal and Salmon dry kibble, with a few small pieces of Stella and Chewy’s freezer dried lamb patties.

What do you listen to while getting ready for the day?

As of late, I’ve been listening to Mark Ronson’s new album “Late Night Feelings”.

Bernedoodle : All You Ever Need To Know

When it comes to rearing crossbreeds, there are still plentiful of crossbreeds that have been designed by humans. One of the latest crossbreeds to grace our earth is the cross between a Poodle and the Bernese Mountain Dog, giving you the Bernedoodle dog breed. Let us dig a little deeper to find out more about this dog breed.

Where Did The Bernedoodle Come From?

The Bernedoodle is a recently developed and engineered crossbreed. It is the brainchild of Sherry Rupke, the owner of SwissRidge Kennels. It is believed that she is the first in the world to introduce this cross. It all started in 2003, where Shery wanted a dog breed that is healthy, have a calm disposition and having a nice tinted coat.

As this is still a relatively young crossbreed, there isn’t a large enough sample size to correctly determine the Bernedoodle’s temperament and characteristics. What we can do, however, is to infer some of the positive traits that the Bernedoodle could inherit from its parents.

Poodle

The Poodle is generally known to be one of the more intelligent dog breeds that you can find. Due to its high intelligence, the Poodle is easy to train, and that is why Poodles are commonly chosen as show dogs. Poodles are generally calm too, but they can be susceptible to the occasional bout of separation anxiety.

The poodle is a playful dog breed that adores attention from their owners. In order to burn off its excess energies, it is encouraged that owners bring their Poodles out for regular exercises so that the dog will not destroy furniture when it is feeling bored!

When it comes to shedding, it is well known that the Poodle has a non-shedding coat, hence making it a breeze to own, especially if you abhor the hassle of clearing loose hair. The single-layer coat is dense, hence it does require the owner to comb the fur regularly to prevent tangles.

As for the Poodle’s size, they do come in three variants, namely the standard, miniature and the toy poodle.

Standard Poodle: Exceeding 16 inches in height and 60 pounds in weight Miniature Poodle: Maximum of 10 to 16 inches in height and 12 to 30 pound Toy Poodle: Maximum of 10 inches in height and weighing up to 10 pounds only

Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog is an extremely beautiful dog breed that comes in a tri-coloured coat. It is also fairly intelligent, hence training this dog will be a breeze. They are commonly reared as family pets as the Bernese Mountain Dog is a loyal dog that guards its family fiercely.

As the Bernese Mountain Dog originates from the Swiss Alps, it is of little wonder that the dog thrives in cold climates. Perhaps the dog’s double coat does help to insulate them from the cold. Do note that the double-coat results in this dog breed shedding heavily.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is pretty powerful, and that is why the dog does double up as a good guard dog. However, their immense strength does mean that you will need to bring them out to exercise and expend their energy. Their strength is particularly useful when it comes to herding or trekking.

For the size, the Bernese Mountain Dog can grow up to 30 inches in height, weighing up to 120 pounds at the heaviest.

Possible Characteristics Of The Bernedoodle

When it comes to breeding the Bernedoodle, it is very possible for the crossbreed to have the best traits from the parent dogs. This is possible if the breeder does its due diligence in selecting the best parents to breed. The result will be having a Bernedoodle that is a healthier, smarter, and beautiful dog that rivals the prettiest dog that you can find.

Temperament

If the breeder does its job well, the Bernedoodle will be docile like the Poodle, yet being fiercely loyal like the Bernese Mountain Dog, hence making them the perfect family, domesticated dog that is friendly with its owners, yet having a sense of loyalty that will enable them to be good guard dogs.

Size

As the Poodle comes in three different sizes, it really depends on the size of the Poodle that you choose to be the parent. Typically, the Bernedoodle can come in three different variants.

Standard Bernedoodle: Ranging from 24 up to 31 inches and weighing from 75 to 110 pounds

Miniature Bernedoodle: Ranging from 17 to 23 inches and weighing from 30 to 50

Toy Bernedoodle: Maximum of 16 inches in height and weighing up to 23 pounds only

Appearance

It is highly possible that the Bernedoodle’s coat takes after either of the parents. As a result, the Bernedoodle could have a long wavy coat that resembles the Poodle or the long fine coat that resembles the Bernese Mountain Dog. Most of the time, the Bernedoodle will have a tri-colour coat, consisting of black, white and brown patches.

Training

As both parents are intelligent and easy to train, the Bernedoodle will be easy to train too. However, since the Bernese Mountain Dog can be pretty stubborn, it is very possible that the Bernedoodle is a little tougher to train! All you need, however, is a little bit of patience.

Exercising

When it comes to exercising the Bernedoodle, the amount of effort that you need when it comes to exercising the Bernedoodle really depends on their size. For toy Bernedoodle, they wouldn’t need much exercises as they probably have little bouts of energy spaces. For the larger Bernedoodle, you can expect them to have a higher energy level, perhaps on par with the Bernese Mountain Dog. The larger Bernedoodle will make a good hiking partner when it comes to long walks or hikes.

Bernedoodle Health

For cross breeds, since the best traits have been selected from parents, the crossbreed offsprings generally do have better health than their parents combined. This is a case of Heterosis, or otherwise known as hybrid vigor, where the crossbreed offspring have better genetic traits than its parents.

However, not all Bernedoodle will be perfectly healthy. Generally, the Bernedoodle might suffer from issues such as hip dysplasia, skin allergic problems or even eye issues.

Where To Rescue Or Adopt Bernedoodle

Bernedoodle might seem to be an awesome pet to have, but truth is while it is indeed awesome to own a Bernedoodle, it is honestly not easy to rescue or adopt a Bernedoodle as this breed can be considered a rare crossbreed, hence owners who own a Bernedoodle will be reluctant to let go of their precious Bernedoodle.

For the case of breeders of Bernedoodle, a quick check around does show that a Bernedoodle puppy can fetch from $1,500 to more than $7,000. The price fluctuations depending on the size, colour, as well as health issues that the Bernedoodle puppy might have. Some of the puppies might hit the $7,000 region due to their parents’ traits. Some owners are really particular on the traits that the Bernedoodle inherits from the parents, and as such will demand that the parents be of certain pedigree. This will be the top reason why Bernedoodle can fetch a hefty price!

What To Look For When Buying Bernedoodle Puppy

So yes, we have established that it is easier to buy a Bernedoodle puppy than to rescue one from the shelters as the puppies are hard to come by in those places. Is the breeder reputable? If not, then perhaps you might want to look for other breeders with a better reputation. If the breeder is indeed reputable, you can then proceed to the next few tips.

You should always ask if the breeder allows house visits, which includes visiting of the parents. This step is important as it allows you to know the condition of the place that the dog is being bred at. A clean house will reflect better on the breeder’s efforts in breeding the Bernedoodle. Also, if you are allowed to visit the parents, you can then have a better perspective of the parents and hence the prospective traits that the crossbreed will have.

The owner should ask you plentiful of questions. This is because a good breeder will ensure that the pups are in good hands before they allow anyone else to purchase a dog from them. Puppy mills, on the other hand, do not care about this as they are merely breeding for profit.

The Bernedoodle breeder should test the puppy’s health and health certificates should be produced. The puppies should be properly vaccinated and microchipped too.

Food
