How to spend time wisely?
Spending time wisely involves making conscious choices about how you allocate your time to maximize productivity, personal growth, and well-being. Here are some tips to help you spend your time wisely:
Set goals and prioritize: Determine your short-term and long-term goals, both personal and professional. Prioritize your tasks and activities based on their importance and relevance to your goals. Focus on the most critical and impactful activities first.
Create a schedule or routine: Establishing a schedule helps you allocate time for specific tasks, responsibilities, and activities. Use a planner, calendar, or digital tools to organize your time effectively. Set aside dedicated blocks for work, study, exercise, relaxation, and hobbies.
Avoid procrastination: Procrastination can be a significant time-waster. Break tasks into smaller, manageable parts and tackle them one at a time. Use time management techniques like the Pomodoro Technique (working in focused bursts with short breaks) to enhance productivity.
Limit distractions: Identify and minimize distractions that hinder your productivity. This could include turning off notifications on your phone or computer, creating a designated workspace, or using website blockers to avoid time-consuming websites or social media platforms.
Practice time batching: Group similar tasks together and allocate specific blocks of time for each category. For example, respond to emails and messages in one designated period, rather than allowing them to interrupt your workflow throughout the day.
Delegate and outsource: Learn to delegate tasks that can be handled by others. If possible, outsource certain responsibilities or seek help when needed. This frees up your time for more important or high-value activities.
Take breaks and practice self-care: Regular breaks are crucial for maintaining focus and productivity. Schedule short breaks during your work or study sessions to rest, stretch, or engage in activities that help you relax and recharge. Prioritize self-care activities like exercise, adequate sleep, and hobbies to maintain overall well-being.
Continuously learn and grow: Allocate time for personal development and learning. Read books, take online courses, listen to educational podcasts, or engage in activities that enhance your skills and knowledge. This investment in yourself can lead to personal growth and open up new opportunities.
Evaluate and reflect: Regularly assess how you are spending your time and evaluate if it aligns with your goals and priorities. Reflect on what activities are bringing you value and satisfaction, and make adjustments accordingly.
Remember, spending time wisely is a personal journey, and what works for one person may not work for another. Find strategies that suit your lifestyle, preferences, and goals. Be flexible and willing to adapt your approach as needed.

Today I want to shine a light on 3 common Zero Waste misconceptions that I frequently experience. I think it is important to address these misconception in order for the Zero Waste movement to continue spreading across the globe. Those misconceptions are:
Zero means Zero.
Wrong. It is impossible right now not to produce any amount of waste. Even the most experienced zero wasters still produce waste. Zero waste is simply what we strive for in addition to being the name of an economy in which the idea of waste does not exist. In the meantime, you may hear others using the phrase "less waste" as opposed to "zero waste" in order to avoid any confusion.
The term zero waste was originally created to describe a circular, or zero zaste economy in which products are carefully and intentionally designed, manufactured, distributed, consumed, and recovered in such a way that waste and landfill are not solutions to a products. In a properly functioning zero waste economy, zero would actually mean zero.
Likewise, Zero does not mean zero because of the state of our current economy which is called a linear, or cradle-to-grave, economy. This means that products are cheaply and poorly designed/manufactured to be short lived and sent to landfill. Waste is an end result for products. Our current economy is the opposite of a zero waster economy. We cannot avoid waste because of this cradle-to-grave model of design and manufacturing.
You have to fit your trash in a mason jar.
Wrong. The mason jar trash is not a requirement for living a zero waste lifestyle nor is it necessary or the only way to truly be zero waste. Moreover, the point of it is to be a visual that gives you a better perspective on how much waste you are accumulating and what kind of waste it is. The mason jar trash can is not a requirement, but it can be something you can strive for in the long run! Do you have to do it? No. Can you still be successful in living a zero waste lifestyle if you do not do it? YES!
Zero Waste is all or nothing.
Let me start off by saying that it is so important to do what makes YOU happy. It is so important not to compare yourself, your zero waste journey, or your lifestyle to anyone else. My point in saying that is if you do not want to totally shape your entire lifestyle to fit more into the zero waste mold, you do NOT have to. That is okay! The ZW community loves any and all efforts.
I see how often times zero waste now comes along with extremely minimalistic lifestyles. Homes that have barely anything in them, solid white walls, and items strategically placed on desks or counter tops. If that is your taste then great, but that is not a requirement of zero waste.
I feel zero waste is not just about eliminating as much trash as you can from your life, it is also about a mindset; being conscious of what products are made from, where they come from, how they can benefit you, the impact products have on the environment, etc.
What I love about zero waste is that any change you make has a HUGE impact on the environment. If you decide that ditching plastic straws is as far as you want to go, that is awesome! If you want to change your entire life completely, that is awesome too! Do not overwhelm yourself. Go at your own pace, and change what you want to change. It is not a race. Any sustainable alternative to plastics/disposables helps the environment greatly.
If you come across these misconceptions in your own mind or with others, consider my words to help guide you! Remember that there will always be exceptions, mistakes, critics, skeptics, etc. Nothing is perfect nor should anyone ever stress about being perfect. If you have another tip that you believe to be essential, let me know!

Assignment 10 Final Draft: Are We Willing to be Inconvenienced For Sustainability?

According to physicist Albert Einstein, ‘A clever person solves a problem; a wise person avoids it’” (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 596). This is a perfect analysis of a zero waste lifestyle; zero wasters avoid making trash as a whole rather than looking for solutions of where to put it.
In my opinion, chapter 17 was a weird chapter because it focused highly on the effects of hazards on humans, and not the environment. It didn’t feel like it belonged in this text. Both chapters cited very controversial examples of responsible waste management/recycling, in my opinion. But, I digress. Here’s what I got out of it.
#WhatMajorHealthHazardsDoWeFace?
We face major health hazards from biological, chemical, natural and cultural factors along with our lifestyle choices. Biological hazards include bacteria, viruses, parasites, protozoa and fungi. Chemical hazards include harmful chemicals in air, water, soil and human-made products. Natural hazards include fire, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes. Cultural hazards include unsafe working conditions, criminal assault and poverty. Lifestyle choice hazards include smoking, poor food choices and unsafe sex. The hazard of Coronavirus which we are facing right now is a biological hazard.
#HowDoBiologicalHazardsThreatenHumanHealth?
Biological hazards can be highly contagious, passing from one person to another, but they don’t have to be. The book talks about how the risks of these hazards, like infectious diseases are declining, but still remain relevant in less developed countries. That’s a bit ironic right now because of Coronavirus. The book also mentions how climate change amplifies the effects of these hazards due to their tendency to breed rapidly in warmer climates. This is a bit terrifying with summer approaching. Another major issue threatening humans is that some of the bacteria which causes infectious diseases have become immune to antibiotics, which makes them more difficult to treat and easier to spread. The spread is also made easier by population growth, which forces higher person-to-person interaction as cities become more dense.
Some believe the Coronavirus originated from bats in a Chinese province. If that is true, it wouldn’t be the first time a disease spread from one animal to another (us). There is a whole field of medicine called Ecological Medicine which studies this connection. Their findings have shown that it is increasingly important to regulate the consumption and trade of exotic animals to prevent the spread of infectious disease. However, in reality, I can see how this can be quite difficult and can come off as colonialistic, in imposing western culture on different cultural norms than our own.
Figure 1. Solutions to Infectious Diseases (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 452.)
#HowDoChemicalHazardsThreatenHumanHealth?
Some chemicals in the environment can cause cancers and birth defects, and disrupt the human immune, nervous and endocrine systems. Toxic chemicals can cause temporary or permanent damage or even death to humans. The EPA has found that almost ½ of the fish tested in 500 US lakes and reservoirs had above safe levels of mercury (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 453). Mercury is a toxic metal naturally released into the air. However, ⅔ of the mercury existing in our atmosphere comes unnaturally from human activity: coal, industrial plants, cement kilns, smelters and solid-waste incinerators. Since Mercury is an element, it cannot be broken down, and it builds up in whatever area it comes to pollute. Humans are exposed to mercury through the food we eat or the air we breathe. This exposure to mercury can cause reduced IQs and nervous system damage.
Figure 2. Movement of Different Forms of Mercury Through the Environment (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 454).
Figure 3. How to Prevent/Control Mercury Inputs (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 454).
Certain chemicals can affect the endocrine system because they have structures which mimic natural hormones. This can allow them to disrupt sexual development and reproduction. Some of these chemicals, or hormone disruptors, include the ones which are used to make plastics more flexible. Specifically, BPA has been a controversial material used in plastics, because research has shown that low levels of BPA can cause brain damage, early puberty, decreased sperm count, cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, liver damage, impaired immune function, impotence and obesity. Consumers have the power to choose BPA free products, but some manufacturers have just replaced the chemical with a similar synthetic, which defeats the purpose.
The book suggests that a simple way to help ourselves is to just switch to cleaner products. However, the book fails to recognize this is not accessible for many people in the US, because “clean” products tend to be more expensive.
Figure 4. Ways to Limit Exposure to Hormone Disruptors (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 455).
#HowCanWeEvaluateRisksFromChemicalHazards?
Scientists use animal testings, case reports, and epidemiological studies to estimate the toxicity of chemicals. They evaluate dosage, solubility, persistence, and biological magnification, to name a few factors. There are many ethical factors which go into animal testing, and since more humane options exist, consumers have the option to buy products that do not test on animals.
“‘Toxicologists know a great deal about a few chemicals, a little about many, and next to nothing about most’” (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 459). Though toxicologists are working hard to evaluate these risks, they overall recommend pollution prevention to reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals. Living in a developed country, we have all likely been exposed to potentially harmful chemicals, but we should avoid it whenever possible.
The book specifically cites 3M and Dupont as business leaders in chemical recycling, which is laughable. Both Dupont and 3M have been involved in environmental scandals of their own, ruined communities, and then tried to deny it when the time came to own up. I can’t fathom why the book would cite these two as examples of responsible businesses following the precautionary principle.
In order to follow the precautionary principle we (businesses, government, individuals) must:
assume new chemicals and technologies could be harmful unless proven otherwise
remove the existing chemicals and technologies that have been assumed safe thus far from the market until proven so
The European Union has already begun to apply the precautionary principle through pollution prevention by phasing out the dirty dozen.
Figure 5. Potentially Harmful Chemicals Found in the Home (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 460).
#HowDoWePercieveAndAvoidRisks?
We can avoid risks by becoming informed, thinking critically and making conscious choices. The best ways to avoid individual health risks are to avoid smoking, lose excess weight, reduce consumption of sugary foods, eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, drink little to no alcohol, avoid excessive sunlight and practice safe sex. Technological risks can be difficult to estimate due to their complexity. But we can do so by calculating their probability of success (Reliability=Tech Reliability x Human Reliability).
Designer William Mcdonough came up with the cradle-to-cradle approach to the life-cycle of products; “we should think of products as part of a continuing cycle instead of becoming solid wastes that end up as litter or being burned or deposited in landfills” (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 574). This is a form of biomimicry, a cycle which replicates the cycle of nature. This way of thinking has also been called closed-loop, and needs to be implemented at the design stage of a product, planning out every step of consumption.
It is important to note that some people are unable to avoid risks. The poor and unimmunized are particularly susceptible to disease. There's a privilege to being able to avoid contact, as in many areas people live with many members of their family in tight quarters and are unable to avoid contact with germs. This fact outlines how for some communities, even if you know the risks, you might still just have to live with them. The cycle of poverty is also worsened during a pandemic due to lower level client facing jobs increasing the susceptibility to disease. The poor are also less likely to receive medical assistance and less likely to have health insurance. The intersection of vulnerabilities is an important factor to consider when avoiding risk. The basic rule of thumb is, the more vulnerable you are before a disaster, you are exponentially more after the fact.
#WhatEnvironmentalProblemsAreRelatedToSolidAndHazardousWastes?
Solid waste contributes to pollution and contains valuable resources that could be reused or recycled. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is what we throw out in our lives everyday–huge amounts of trash. We also produce industrial waste through agriculture, mining and industry. Without humans, this problem of this type of waste wouldn’t exist, because the natural wastes of one organism become nutrients or raw materials for another. We will always produce some waste, due to the law of conservation of matter, but cradle-to-cradle design could help reduce our waste and environmental harm by 80%. The United States produces the most waste in the world, “enough MSW to fill a bumper-to-bumper convoy of garbage trucks long enough to circle the earth’s equator almost six times” (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 576).
Figure 6. Composition of MSW in the US and Where It Goes After Collection (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 576).
Many people have the misconception that landfills operate as huge compost piles where biodegradable waste will eventually break down in a short time. But in reality, decomposition takes a long time in a landfill due to lack of sunlight, water, and air.
Hazardous waste contributes to pollution, natural capital degradation, health problems and premature deaths. This type of waste is corrosive, toxic, flammable, can be explosive and cause disease. The two major types of hazardous wastes are organic compounds and toxic heavy metals. E-waste is a large source of this type of waste. Much of e-waste is shipped to foreign countries where the labor is cheap and environmental regulations are lax. “More developed countries produce 80-90% of the world’s hazardous wastes, and the United States is the largest producer” (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 577). This means as human societies progress, we degrade the environment that allowed us to do so.
#HowShouldWeDealWithSolidWaste?
We should deal with solid waste by reducing our production of it, reusing or recycling it and safely disposing of it. Waste management is imperative to dealing with solid waste, but prevention and reduction are more effective. Integrated waste management combines all of these approaches, and is the most realistic.
Figure 7. Priorities Recommended by the US National Academy of Sciences for Dealing with MSW compared with The Reality (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 579).
The 4 R’s by priority are
Refuse: Don’t use it.
Reduce: Use less of it.
Reuse: use it over and over.
Recycle: Upcycle, compost, and follow local recycling rules.
The question becomes, is it the responsibility of individuals to take these actions, or the responsibility of the system to change and make it really easy for individuals to do so? I think a combination of both. Producers of trash tend to focus on source separation as the most cost effective form of recycling. However, this puts a lot of owness on the consumer to be knowledgable on their local recycling practices.
6 Strategies that industries and communities can use to reduce resource use, waste and pollution:
Change industrial processes to eliminate or reduce harmful chemical use.
Redesign manufacturing processes and products to use less material and energy.
Develop products that are easy to repair, reuse, remanufacture, compost or recycle.
Establish cradle-to cradle responsibility laws.
Eliminate and/or reduce unnecessary packaging.
Use fee-per-bag solid waste collection systems.
#WhyAreWeRefusingReducingReusingAndRecyclingSoImportant?
We refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle what we use to decrease our consumption of matter and energy resources, reduce pollution and natural capital degradation and save money.
Questions to ask yourself to avoid a throwaway economy:
Do I really need this? (refuse)
How many of these do I actually need? (reduce)
Is this something I can use more than once? (reuse)
Can this be converted into the same or a different product when I am done with it? (recycle)
Figure 8. Some Ways to Reuse (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 582).
Businesses are also forming out of people’s desire to avoid waste, such as rental clothing, furniture and child’s toys. Additionally recycling businesses are arising to give people points for recycling, or to recycle non recyclable products. Terracycle is a company that partners with brands to recycle their packaging in order to divert it from a landfill (Terracycle 2020).
Recycling is a complex and expensive process, so it is not the most sustainable form of waste diversion. Additionally, incorrect sorting for recycling is ineffective.
Figure 9. Advantages and Disadvantages of Recycling (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 585).
#WhatAreTheAdvantagesAndDisadvantagesOfBurningOrBuryingSolidWaste?
Figure 10. Trade-Offs of Burning Solid Waste (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 587).
Figure 11. Trade-Offs of Landfills (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 588).
#HowShouldWeDealWithHazardousWaste?
We should deal with hazardous waste by producing less of it, reusing or recycling it, converting it to less hazardous materials, and safely storing it. Most countries follow these priorities poorly. The long-term solution is prevention, but short term the other options will suffice. Hazardous waste can be detoxified physically, chemically or biologically. Additionally plasma gasification can be used to treat the waste, but it is quite expensive. Burial of hazardous waste is the most common form of storage in the United States and abroad due to low cost. But the environmental costs of leakage into groundwater are high. The current regulation for this type of storage is inadequate. Actually, 95% of the hazardous and toxic wastes produced in the United States are unregulated, and even less are regulated in less developed countries. The consequences of this is that about $1.7 trillion is spent on the cleanup of toxic waste, not including legal fees. And we pay for it through our taxes!
#HowCanASocietyShiftToALowWasteEconomy?
“Shifting to a low waste economy will require individuals and businesses to reduce resource use and to reuse and recycle most solid and hazardous wastes at local, national and global levels” (Miller and Spoolman 2016, 594). Bottom-up campaigns are essential in the process including sit-ins, concerts, protests, rallies, and petitions. Manufacturers of waste feel that it needs to be managed, while citizens feel that waste needs to be reduced; it is a constant struggle.
3 Factors hinder reuse and recycling
The market prices of products are not applying full-cost pricing.
The economic playing field is uneven because resource extraction usually receives more subsidies than reuse and recycling industries.
The demand and the price paid for recycled goods fluctuates since it isn’t a high priority for consumers.
We can reverse these factors by attaching deposit fees or fee-per bag charges and governments can pass laws requiring companies to take back, recycle and/or reuse packaging and e-waste. Overall, a change in mindset must be adopted to the way in which we consume in the following ways.
We must understand:
Everything is connected.
There is no “throw away” for our wastes.
Producers and polluters should pay for their produced wastes.
We can mimic nature by reusing, recycling, composting or exchanging MSW.
(Miller and Spoolman 2016, 596).
Additionally, I watched No Impact Man for this post, where Colin Beavin asks, what if we tried not to hurt the environment? And what are we willing to give up to do so? He spent a year living zero waste, only buying food within a 250 mile radius, and only traveling by foot and bike. He shopped at local farmers markets, turned off his electricity, homemade cleaning products and in the end adopted a different mindset towards life. Beavin began to understand the disconnection between humans and nature through consumption. Personally, I have been pursuing zero waste for 3 years, and even I thought the guy was a bit extreme. His critics felt the same way. In the film, Beavin noted how some environmentalists had reached out to him saying he was giving the rest of us a bad rep. But I think it’s important for people to understand the validity of the experiment, and how little thought goes into most peoples’ everyday impact. This strikes a nerve in American culture because we are a society built on American corporate capitalism. Through No Impact Man, Beavin also balanced the question of individual versus collective action. Some other critics said if we could do it without government and business aid, then what’s the problem? I think the problem is that living how Colin lived is seen as extreme and unrealistic for most people due to the inconveniences it causes. Individual action requires people to be engaged, and creates the demand for the world to look differently.

Jobs in Australia: Company provides five-hour work day, with advantages
You roam in with your morning coffee at 9am, come down to company, and you're out the door by 2pm to hit up the beach, see a motion picture or simply face-plant on the couch. It might sound like a difficult utopian dream, however a number of Aussie business have actually successfully made the shift.GET READY FOR THE FIVE-HOUR WORK DAY At Hobart-based financial firm Collins SBA, every staff member-- from receptionists to senior management-- can be leaving work while the sun is still high, supplied they get the task done. The idea came from the company's handling director Jonathan Elliot. When his other half got cancer, Jonathan had to drop to part-time hours to look after her and their young baby. While his household life enhanced, he was shocked to discover his work output didn't suffer. Despite the decreased hours, he was producing the same quantity as he would in an eight-hour work day, leading him to question whether the nine-to-five lifestyle was actually necessary. After undergoing a lot of research study-- consisting of taking a look at similar designs in nations like Sweden-- the company took a huge threat and decided to carry out a three-month trial of a
five-hour work day for all staff, beginning at the start of last year.At first, they were nervous about the experiment-- especially how clients may see the unconventional practice. But inning accordance with the company's operations director Claudia Parsons, the advantages were felt almost right away."Our staff produced the same work, received the exact same pay, and had the exact same responsibilities,"she told news.com.au."The idea was that if you might get all this done within a five-hour period, you were free to leave at 2.
"It actually got people assessing how they do something, and how they can do it better. It inspired them to examine every element of their function."Claudia Parsons said the five-hour work day completely revolutionised
her office.Source: Supplied The amount of authorized leave being taken likewise lowered considerably, with the extra time spent with households and exercising contributing to much better psychological
and physical health. She stated customers proved truly helpful of the idea."They don't care exactly what hours we work as long as we keep our guarantees to them,
"she said.A CULTURAL SHIFT IN THE WORKPLACE The transition created an office-wide shift. Two of the greatest office time-wasters-- e-mails and limitless sit-down meetings-- were eliminated."In terms of e-mail, everyone was getting incredibly slowed down,"Claudia said.
"We switched to a brand-new technology called YaMma-- it's type of like Facebook for company-- for our non-urgent group updates, which people would log into just one or two times a day." Email is a hard thing to avoid in this day and age, when smartphones have us on-call 24/7. Claudia stated people in more senior positions were most likely to inspect their emails after-hours, but everyone else was good at switching off.Meetings likewise changed in design, from a dragged out table process to a quick stand-up." We would physically team up, talk and toss concepts around, which we discovered was much more reliable-- especially for complicated concerns-- than the e-mail back-and-forth." She said the conferences were "bite-sized "stand-ups("Individuals don't waffle when they're standing ")which may last 10 minutes or less. You will not discover endless conferences in the five-hour work day.Source: News Limited Perhaps the most fascinating shift was in the definition of a good employee. We tend to see remaining back after-hours as the sign
of a devoted employee. If your employer sees you still banging away at your keyboard after hours, perhaps you'll be in line for a pay increase, yeah?At her company, Claudia suggests getting out on the five-hour mark is actually the sign of a good worker." Individuals are getting congratulated for leaving early,"she stated. "The concept is that the five-hour
work day was a reward, not a right. If you're remaining back late, youmay get a tap on the shoulder, and asked exactly what you
're still doing there when your whole team has actually left. "There's this gorgeous freedom to being able to leave the door in the middle of the afternoon and know you're not being evaluated."WHY IT'S NOT FOR EVERYONE There are periodic exceptions to this. Claudia said she 'd worked longer-than-usual hours over the previous few days, and that individuals may "stay back"and work a six or seven-hour day.
She stated the office has mainly embraced the new system.Of course, the model is not for everybody. It would be hard for restaurants, coffee shops and retail shops to make it work-- and the exact same for legal firms that expense by the hour, or 24-hour digital newsrooms. You will not find this burnt-out stock model in a five-hour work day. But it takes discipline.Source: News Limited Even in industries that can trial it, there are difficulties." It's easy to slip back into old habits,"
Claudia said. "It sounds fantastic
, and it genuinely is life-changing ... but it requires a lot of discipline, and a considerable cultural shift. The model draws in a specific type of staff member." For some workers, it can be challenging. If you're used to extending your work day over an eight-hour duration or longer, practically doubling your effectiveness takes a change in frame of mind that does not fit everyone. It can likewise separate the tough employees from the slackers. But overall, Claudia says the favorable impacts are indisputable." It's hands-down the most life-altering work environment
initiative I have actually ever been associated with, "she stated. "I 'd like for more organisations toget on board. "

Beating food waste

Australians love to shop for food. They love to eat it, talk about it, share photos of it on social media and buy books that tell them how to cook it. What Australians don’t love to admit, though, is that they waste $8 billion worth of food every year. In fact, the average household wastes $1036 worth of food each year (an amount that would cover six months of electricity bills or feed a household for a full month).
Of the $8 billion of waste, according to FoodWise, most is made up of fresh food. Every year, $2.67 billion worth of fruit and vegetables ends up in our bins and, ultimately, rotting and emanating methane into the environment.
There’s a number of organisations and campaigns aimed at educating consumers and hospitality businesses on how to prevent and manage food waste, but it’s not fun, exciting or immediately rewarding, so dedication to the cause isn’t attractive to the average Australian. It has an immediate impact on our finances, our natural resources, our waistlines and the global environment, though, so knowing how we waste food and why is the first step towards stopping the waste.
Jon Dee and Pat Cash of Planet Ark partnered with Tina Jackson to found DoSomething! in 2009. The goal was to create practical and functional ways for everyday Australians to “do something” about the environmental and social problems that can be addressed through lifestyle changes. The DoSomething! team founded FoodWise to educate and promote sustainable food choices. A large element of their drive is to push seasonal and local food, and to provide recipes and tips on preparing food, using leftovers, shopping smarter and growing food at home.
When it comes to waste, the most common culprits to be found in our rubbish bins before their use-by date are bread, milk, cheese, rice, bananas and chicken. Eggs, lettuce and tomato are also tossed out before their time is up. Rather than not buy them in the first place, the goal of FoodWise, OzHarvest and the Department of the Environment and Energy is to encourage you to buy only what you need and use it.
Making a difference
The Department of the Environment and Energy founded the National Waste Strategy in 2016 with the goal of halving food waste by 2030. The department’s facts make the FoodWise statistics seem highly conservative in comparison. The Australian government found that Australians waste around $20 billion worth of food, throwing away 3.1 million tonnes of edible food annually.
The National Waste Strategy has devised a number of ways to reach its lofty goal by 2030, including:
• Improving efficient farming practices, which includes marketing fruit and vegetables that don’t typically meet aesthetic standards of supermarkets and consumers.
• Encouraging partnerships between food retailers and charitable organisations such as Second Bite (secondbite.org).
• Improving recycling initiatives and reusing food waste for compost and bio-fuel.
FoodWise reveals that the demographics most wasteful of food are young people aged 18–24 and households with a combined income of $100,000 or more. In a global environment in which many nations are starving and facing devastation of their natural forests and water resources, it seems mind-boggling that 40 per cent of our rubbish is made up of edible food.
Founder of OzHarvest, Ronni Kahn, launched her role as a social entrepreneur after working in the events industry for 20 years. “I saw mountains of good food going to waste every day, while so many were still hungry. I knew there had to be a better way,” she says. “I was also looking for purpose in my life and a visit to see an old friend in South Africa who was doing amazing work with underprivileged communities reinforced what I knew I had to do.”
Kahn sees the origins of enormous domestic and industry food waste as a result of the availability and ignorance around the process of bringing food to the store or market. “People no longer value food in the way we used to, due to abundant supply, relatively low cost and accessibility,” she says. “According to Foodbank’s Hunger Report, more than 3.6 million Australians experience food insecurity each year. This is an incredibly sad statistic, knowing how much good food goes to waste.”
It’s Kahn’s opinion that the Australian government has underestimated the level of food waste. “There are many sources of statistics for food waste across the world, which consistently report that consumers waste more than farms, manufacturers, supermarkets and the hospitality industry combined. The government figure relates to commercial and residential waste. Household waste comes to around 50 per cent of the total, so that’s around $10 billion.” Still, she believes the National Waste Strategy goal of halving food waste by 2030 is possible.
“Totally,” she asserts. “Food is so precious — wasting it makes no sense economically, environmentally and ethically, but we all do it. From forgetting about food in the fridge, buying and cooking too much, letting it expire and not storing it properly, there are so many reasons good food ends up in the bin, but it’s easy to avoid. Get into good habits with these four simple steps: look, buy, store, cook.”
DoSomething! co-founder Dee, who was also named Australian of the Year 2010, says the FoodWise campaign aims to break down the figures around food waste and to reveal and educate on the reality of domestic food waste in Australia. “I’ve been looking at redoing the numbers based on thorough methodology, not just surveying people. People underestimate how much they’ve been wasting. We thought ours was provable, but now we believe our current figures are about half of the national figure in reality.”
Dee, like Kahn, believes the ease of access is a root cause of the problem with waste.
“We don’t pay a proper amount to farmers for milk. We throw away so much food. Part of the problem is that we ignore seasons and expect food to be there and we don’t use up all the food we have access to,” Dee says.
“FoodWise is all about getting people to understand and value sustainability. Far too much water, electricity and other resources are wasted every time we throw away a small piece of food. There’s a real disconnect; they don’t understand the paddock-to-plate production process. It comes back to using what we’ve already got and being more conscientious about shopping with a plan.”
Dee believes it’s not possible at this point to achieve the 2030 goal of halving domestic food waste. “We won’t be able to halve our food waste until the government puts better resources into a thorough campaign to change the public attitude to food.”

Food waste facts from FoodWise
Australians throw out $8 billion worth of food every year, which compromises:
• $2.67 billion of fresh food (33 per cent)
• $2.18 billion of leftovers (27 per cent)
• $1.17 billion of packaged and long-life products (15 per cent)
• $727 million of drinks (9 per cent)
• $727 million of frozen food (9 per cent)
• $566 million of takeaways (7 per cent)
The key reasons for throwing out edible food are:
• Cooking too much for our needs
• Mistakenly throwing out food before its use-by date
• Not checking the cupboard before shopping
• Shopping when hungry
The biggest wasters are:
• Households with incomes over $100,000
• Young people (18–24)
• Families with children
Tips to reduce your food waste
According to Ronni Kahn of OzHarvest:
• LOOK at what you’ve got
• BUY what you need
• STORE food properly
• COOK what you have
According to Jon Dee of FoodWise:
• Check the use-by date and try not to buy items you won’t use within the time frame
• Avoid shopping on an empty stomach — we buy more when we’re hungry
• Avoid buying bulk or heavily reduced food products simply because they are bargains
• Check the pantry and fridge before shopping to ensure you’re not buying what you don’t need
• Look up recipes online for your leftover ingredients (wilting lettuce, soft carrots, brown bananas all have uses)
• Before ordering takeaway, consider making your own meals with what you’ve got
• Buy food that’s in season to ensure it tastes better and lasts longer, which also avoids excessive water, electricity and storage costs associated with making food available year-round ■

The Importance of Time Management: 8 Ways It Skyrockets Your Success
No matter how you slice it, there are only 24 hours in a day. Time is a finite resource, and it’s up to you to make the most of it.
If you lose money, you might get a chance to make it back; but a wasted hour is irreplaceable.
While we can’t add hours to our day, I can help you understand the importance of time management, and how time management helps you maximize the time you do have. This isn’t just a skill for entrepreneurs to master. Everyone could benefit from managing their time more effectively and appreciating it for the finite resource that it is.
The importance of time management
The importance of time management comes down to how much it impacts your personal and professional life. Time management is organizing your day so that you find the best use for every moment.
Excellent time management allows you to create a healthy balance in your workflow and home life.[1] The consequences of failed time management include missing deadlines and living with excessive stress.
Even if you’ve failed to manage your time in the past, it’s never too late to change. Set deadlines, get organized, delegate tasks, and prioritize your to-do list to get the most value from your time.
Why time management matters to you
With the right time management skills and tools, you will experience a lot of benefits from good time management. Here are 8 reasons why you should start to manage time better:
1. Do more with less
Knowing how to manage your time means that you’ll be able to accomplish more in shorter periods of time with less effort. Think about how much more you accomplish when you truly focus.
Prioritizing and matching tasks to blocks of available time is one way to do more with less effort. Instead of trying to do deep work in the ten minutes between meetings, complete a minor task. This frees up larger blocks for projects that require concentration.
If you find an extra hour of productivity in your day by using your time wisely, that gives you an additional 250 productive hours at work every year.[2]
2. Make work fulfilling and life meaningful
There’s nothing more frustrating than spending a day being completely busy but also entirely unproductive. A feeling of accomplishment helps you stay motivated at work. At home this translates into being able to relax and enjoy your time.
By being conscious of how you use time, you’ll have more of it to spend on the things you love.
3. End indecisiveness
Worrying about whether you have made the right choice can be time-consuming. Naturally, big decisions take up a lot of time but the small decisions you make every day can also be huge time-wasters. Deciding what to do next on your to-do list, for example, can have a major time cost.
Instead of staring blankly at your to-do list wondering what to tackle, create a plan or a routine.[3] This keeps you from using any of your precious minutes questioning what you should do next.
4. Achieve goals faster
Many people have big goals to feel fulfilled. But without understanding the importance of time management, these goals could sit on the shelf indefinitely.
For example, perhaps one of your goals is to lead a healthier lifestyle but you can’t seem to carve out time for gym sessions. Chances are, the time you need already exists. You just have to find it. By making the time to attend to your health, you can make necessary and desirable changes quickly.
5. Boost confidence
Time management can improve your confidence. You’re more likely to take care of yourself properly if you have the time to do so. You’ll look and feel more put together before you even set foot into your work space.
In addition, you’ll get a regular boost from feeling a sense of accomplishment. Meeting your deadlines and exceeding expectations is a huge motivator. On the flip-side, failing to meet deadlines and struggling to keep up leads to burnout.[4]
6. Have more energy to achieve more
Constantly feeling worn out and stressed is miserable. It also makes it hard to take on new challenges. An efficient workflow gives you the time to build new skills to improve your work.
This doesn’t only apply to work, though. Think of how much more exciting life is when you feel energized. With a boost of energy, you’re more likely to try a new hobby or go on an adventure instead of planting yourself on the couch.
7. Make more time to do the things you love
After you consider the amount of time that it takes for you to sleep, work, eat, commute and attend to your personal hygiene, you have about four hours per day to devote to the things you do for fun.
By learning to manage your time, you’ll have more opportunities to work on personal growth, spend time with family or visit friends. This quality time is priceless.
8. Reduce stress and avoid feeling overwhelmed
In a given day, you might be tasked with creating a mock up for a project, taking your child to practice, leading a discussion at work and buying groceries. When every task on your to-do list seems equally important, you’ll become overwhelmed.
Good time management allows you to look at your to-do list, categorize, and prioritize everything that’s expected of you. You’ll readily see the distinctions between work-related and personal tasks. You’ll know whether you can delegate some tasks or shuffle items so that you can be more effective.
The result is a calmer and more-accomplished you.
Start managing your time
Time isn’t an infinite resource for us. By becoming excellent at time management, everyone can make the most of the time they are given. Failing to manage your time means losing hours you can never get back. Succeeding opens a world of possibilities.
By sharpening your time management skills, you can expect to be more confident and effective at work, and you’ll have more time to spend with your family. You can take care of yourself and feel a strong sense of purpose when you produce your best work.

Luke Tonge, Everybody; Everybody, Luke Tonge.
It’s unlikely that anyone reading this isn’t already acquainted with the name Luke Tonge. In the decade since he left Falmouth University with a BA in graphic design, Luke has carved out a unique space for himself in the UK’s design scene; managing the art direction and design of hugely popular independent magazines like Boat and Monotype’s Recorder, getting his hands dirty in the mucky world of design journalism for FormFiftyFive, and just generally being a friendly presence at industry events up and down the country—and all within the precious few hours available to him on evenings and weekends.
After ten years of squeezing all of this in around an agency day job, in January of 2018 Luke decided to become the master and commander of his working life and go freelance, so we stopped by to see if it was going plain sailing...
Describe what you do in the simplest way possible.
'Graphic Design'
(I try to arrange words & pictures well)
A bit more accurately, I'm a recently-turned-freelance graphic designer based in Birmingham, happily splitting my time between branding and editorial projects, teaching two days a week at BCU, and helping pull together the forthcoming inaugural Birmingham Design Festival.
And what were you doing before that?
Corporate design by day, mostly for international FMCG clients, at a large marketing and advertising agency in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham. My freelance practice by night—mostly magazine art-direction and design—plus some brand identity projects.
How long did it take you to make the leap to doing your own thing?
Too long! I probably overstayed my welcome in the agency I left last year. I loved aspects of studio life—having a clear role, looking after a team, the stability of turning up to find work waiting for me every day—but the politics got the better of me in the end, so once we'd bought a house and renovated it last year, my wife Tash and I made the decision it was time for me to jump into the deep end of freelance design! It had been in the works for about 18 months, so it was a big relief.
Leaving university in 2007, I knew I wanted agency experience as I had so many practical and commercial knowledge gaps I wanted to fill. I spent three years in my first job, and then almost seven in my last—so almost a decade of very commercial environments and experience—during which time I went from a Junior to Senior 'Creative'. I recognise, however, that I'm fortunate both jobs permitted me enough freedom to take on freelance projects outside of work hours, which kept me satisfied and enthused about design.
What’s been the biggest positive of freelance life so far?
I'd have to say its the really obvious lifestyle stuff: being able to head home early and avoid traffic, work from home if need be, take a day off at short notice etc. While this stuff isn't particularly glamorous, being in control of your own time is a huge change and a relief.
And the biggest negative?
Honestly I'm a cliché; it has been the money. I know it’s possible to make a small fortune freelancing if you're savvy and well connected, and I'm not complaining because I've been busy since I took the leap, but I misjudged quite how big a financial cushion would be helpful and was stung with a particularly eye-watering tax bill shortly after starting out. Those 30-day and 45-day payment terms take some getting used to! But I think now I'm a few months in, things are starting to make more sense.
How’s the invoice-chasing aspect of it working out?
I sometimes joke about how I'm now a professional emailer, and there is some truth to that. Admin is taking up a HUGE whack of my time; invoicing, PO's, proposals, interviews, the list of non-design tasks seems never ending! In terms of getting clients to pay up, its early days, so I wouldn't like to say its all plain sailing, but I'm learning to ask for a percentage upfront, and also increase late fees, so I'm thinking those things will help eliminate time wasters and make sure everyone involved respects each other.
Going freelance has obviously freed up some time for you to take on new exciting initiatives like the Birmingham Design Festival. Tell me about that…
The truth is I've always been busy with side gigs and events have been a part of that. Being invited to help out with curating a type-special Glug in Birmingham last year and seeing the warmth with which our corner of the design community received it definitely made me more receptive to the idea of taking things up a level this year with BDF.
Running a four-day design festival is, it turns out, incredibly hard work! We've decided to go the easy route (not) with about 18 venues. Fortunately, I'm one part of a dedicated and delightful team of 15 friends (old and new) in Brum who have coalesced to make it a reality.
Dan Alcorn approached me last Summer with a vision for a 'proper' design festival in Birmingham and we bonded over the possibilities of such an event, pooling our connections and ideas. We recently announced our incredible speaker line-up and have a very busy three months ahead of us in the run-up to the festival.
Why Brum, why now?
Why *not* Brum, why *not* now? I know you don't mean anything snide by this, but there's an underlying perception of Birmingham, both outside and inside the Midlands, that is one of slight disappointment or mild under-performance. I'm not here to debate how deserved that is, but as a fairly recent incomer to the region (8 years) I've just been blown away by the honesty and pride there is here, and the determination.
Being the perpetual underdog has its upsides of course because expectations are low and we've not got any obvious competition. The creative scene here in Brum is absolutely fizzing with potential and action. From TEDxBrum and the Impact Hub to Badego and Canvas Conference, from Provide and Rope Press to STEAMhouse and Medicine Gallery, from PHORM and Seven9 Signs, to the Electric Cinema and The Mockingbird—so there's a heap of exciting stuff happening we're keen to plug into, champion and utilise. We also don't feel like we're stepping on any toes which is important, and those events which could be seen as rivals are already our friends, cheering us on (and advising us) from a distance.
How would you describe the creative community in Birmingham?
Passionate. Plucky. Eager. Hungry. Hard-working. Fun. Feisty. Scrappy. A little skeptical too, at times, and still suffering from a lack of togetherness that is perhaps a legacy of agency rivalries of old. In short, ripe for an event like BDF!
You go to a lot of creative conferences. What have they taught you about putting on your own, and what traps have you been careful not to fall into?
I've been fortunate to attend quite a few conferences, events and festivals over the years, both as just a regular attendee, covering them as press (for FormFiftyFive) and also more recently as a speaker. I think in our increasingly freelance-leaning industry with a screen-obsessed culture there's still a huge place for physical meet-ups and events. Add into the mix some inspiring and interesting talks at affordable prices and you've got a great excuse for a day or two off work!
In terms of my learning from events, a few things spring to mind. The Cheltenham Design Festival taught me about the importance of diversity in speaker line-ups and how successful a 'smaller' start-up festival can be. Years of attending the MagCulture Modern Magazine conference showed me the value of keeping things simple and having a great team to help the execution. Lastly, BCN>MCR run by my pal Dave up in Manchester taught me the value of great venues and really beautiful promotional material.
The biggest trap I think (touch wood) we've avoided so far is chasing after speakers who we know to be unreliable and building things around them. Having been to events with big-name speakers who've dropped out on the day, I know how disappointing that can be, so we're spreading the risk nicely over a programme of brilliant and tested speakers.
What’s next on the Luke Tonge big freelance opportunity wishlist?
I'd LOVE a new magazine or editorial project to sink my teeth into—they're usually meaty, enjoyable and satisfying things that have a lot of design-time in them, and a big payoff at the end when it’s finished. I'm also learning that helping businesses, charities and brands with their identity is my real forte, and that kind of work is becoming my bread and butter. I love the process of creating a brand and working closely with a client to deliver something useful and impactful. Those jobs are even more enjoyable when the subject matter is exciting, or the client brave. But I have a sneaking suspicion that much of the next three months is going to be spent making sure BDF2018 is as good as we can possibly make it.
