How to Cancel Shopify Subscription: A Step-by-Step Guide
Tumblr media
Canceling a Shopify subscription might seem daunting, but it’s a straightforward process when you know what steps to follow. Whether you’re switching platforms, pausing your store, or deciding to stop using Shopify altogether, canceling your subscription correctly is crucial to avoid extra charges or complications. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of cancel shopify subscription, ensuring a smooth transition.
Understanding Shopify's Billing Cycle
Monthly vs. Yearly Plans
Before canceling your Shopify subscription, it’s essential to understand how Shopify’s billing works. Shopify offers both monthly and yearly subscription options. If you are on a monthly plan, your store is billed at the end of each billing cycle. However, if you have a yearly plan, canceling might not stop the subscription immediately, and refunds are not typically given for unused time on a yearly subscription.
Review Outstanding Fees
Make sure you review any outstanding charges before canceling your subscription. Shopify bills you for the current cycle, so if you cancel in the middle of a billing period, you may still owe fees. This includes app subscriptions, shipping costs, or any custom features you’ve added to your store. It’s essential to settle all outstanding charges to avoid any billing issues after the cancellation.
Preparing to Cancel Your Shopify Subscription
Backup Your Data
Canceling your Shopify subscription means losing access to your store’s backend, including all customer data, product information, and order history. Therefore, it’s crucial to back up your data before proceeding. You can export customer lists, orders, and product information in CSV format. This backup ensures you have access to your data in case you decide to reopen your store or migrate to another platform.
Cancel Third-Party App Subscriptions
If you’ve installed third-party apps through Shopify, canceling your Shopify subscription won’t automatically cancel these apps. You need to manually cancel each app to prevent further charges. Go to the “Apps” section in your Shopify admin, and review each app’s subscription. Cancel the ones you no longer need before moving forward with the cancellation of your Shopify account.
How to Cancel Your Shopify Subscription
Log in to Your Shopify Admin
The first step to canceling your subscription is to log in to your Shopify admin panel. Ensure you are using the correct account, as you can only cancel your store through the account that holds the store owner role.
Go to “Settings”
Once logged in, navigate to the “Settings” option located at the bottom left of the dashboard. The “Settings” menu holds various options, including those for billing, payments, and your store subscription.
Select “Plan”
In the “Settings” menu, you’ll see a section labeled “Plan.” Click on this option to access your subscription details. Here, you’ll find information about your current Shopify plan, billing cycle, and available options for changing or canceling the plan.
Click on “Deactivate Store”
In the “Plan” section, scroll to the bottom of the page until you find the “Deactivate Store” option. Clicking on this will take you to the deactivation page, where you can confirm that you want to close your store.
Choose a Reason for Cancellation
Shopify will ask you to select a reason for canceling your subscription. The platform collects this information for feedback and improvement purposes. You can choose from options such as switching platforms, business closure, or financial reasons. While this step is mandatory, it doesn’t affect the cancellation process.
Confirm Store Deactivation
After selecting your reason for cancellation, Shopify will ask you to confirm your decision. Once you confirm, your store will be deactivated, and your subscription will be canceled. If you have a monthly plan, you won’t be charged further after the current billing period. If you have a yearly plan, the subscription will remain active until the period ends, but the store will be inaccessible.
Additional Steps After Canceling
Save Your Shopify URL
Even after canceling your Shopify subscription, your store URL will remain reserved for you. If you decide to return to Shopify in the future, you can reactivate your store using the same URL, provided no one else has claimed it in the meantime. It’s a good idea to save your store URL in case you want to resume your business later.
Remove Shopify from Your Domain
If you purchased your domain through Shopify, it will remain active, but your store will be inaccessible. You may want to transfer the domain to another hosting service if you plan to use it elsewhere. If you connected a domain from a third-party provider, ensure you remove Shopify’s DNS settings from the domain settings so that it no longer points to your Shopify store.
Pause Store as an Alternative
If you’re unsure about permanently canceling your Shopify subscription, you can choose to pause your store instead. Shopify offers a “Pause and Build” plan, which allows you to keep your store online at a reduced cost. This option is useful if you plan to take a break from running the store but don’t want to lose all your progress. Your store will remain visible to customers, but they won’t be able to make purchases.
Refunds and Reopening Your Store
Shopify’s Refund Policy
Shopify does not typically offer refunds for canceled subscriptions. If you cancel in the middle of a billing cycle, you will still have access to the store until the end of that period, but you won’t be refunded for any unused time. For yearly plans, there is usually no refund available, so make sure you fully understand the commitment before signing up for longer subscription periods.
Reopening Your Store
If you change your mind and decide to reopen your Shopify store, you can do so by logging back into your account. Shopify allows store reactivation within a specific period after cancellation, although some data, like app settings or customizations, may be lost. To ensure a smooth reopening, it’s a good idea to back up all relevant data before canceling.
Conclusion
Canceling your Shopify subscription is a straightforward process, but it requires careful preparation to avoid unnecessary charges and data loss. By backing up your data, canceling third-party app subscriptions, and following the step-by-step guide, you can ensure a smooth transition. Using the best no-code mobile app builder can help if you decide to switch platforms while maintaining mobile functionality. Whether you’re switching platforms, pausing operations, or closing your business, understanding Shopify’s cancellation process helps prevent any future issues.

Tumblr media
after almost five years on the platform, 1,200+ sales and almost 270 raving reviews, shmetsy is officially shutting me down :(
Tumblr media
... because i dare to be based out of my home country... i guess??? lols
i could potentially point out how much money i have given to this platform throughout the years... due to it's outrageous & ever increasing fees (nobody held a gun to my head and forced me to use it so that's on me obvi I GUESS) i could point out that this said platform has refused time and time again to help the artists (its very backbone, one could argue!) when they are blatantly ripped-off and are presently being pushed out by dropshippers and Al slop/ garbage. i so could <3
but alas! i am a christlike lady and bringing that up would be sooo uncouth and vulgar... i would never do such a thing... i am a good catholic lady!
(the text above is an example of the rhetorical device known as irony. DO NOT SUE ME. thnx xoxo)
the deadline they gave me is in august. however! i am going ahead and graciously helping out flopsy and taking down the store myself!
aren't i a dear? now you guys don't have to take it down for me! i'm SO kind <3 thus, i am preemptively pressing delete on july 1st, 2025.
thankfully (thank u God! and past Dani!) i have been diligently working on my own store for a few months now... as well as a standby shopify one... however, idk if they will be done in time for the closing in july.
that being said... you can get a sneaky preview by clicking here mwahahahah
so... what now?
all i ask of you is to please be patient with me <3
that being said, if you are seeking for a way to support me monetarily in the time my store is gone (which means a substantial amount of my income will also be gone YIIIIPPEEEEE) i also have a patreon :3 i do sneak peeks, there's exclusive content and i mail you goodies... also have that digital library up and running right now, which is free to access to all $5+ memebers... [link to my patreon]
!!! if you are not able to support me/do not want to in any monetary way, PLEASE do not feel forced or obligated to. your well-being comes first!!! that is the main priority!!! likewise, if at any point you have to cancel your subscription, don't worry at all. your support, your messages, your prayers!! that's more than enough!!! i've always said i would do everything i already do for free, but sadly *gestures to everything* you know.

Commerce Inspector Alternatives :
If you have limited budget and looking for other cheaper alternative so I think Ecomhunt and Niche Scraper are the best choices especially if you work in dropshipping, cause these two tools are designed specially for dropshippers .Furthermore, both tools have free plans , so you can try them and then decide which is more suitable for your business .
Conclusion
I’ve tried Commerce Inspector for 3 days now and from my short experience,  I can say that it’s one of the best spy tools that I’ve ever experienced before, cause it gave me everything that I need from analyzing my competitors stores to revealing their best selling products, It’s just amazing .But Like I said before, if you are beginner with a limited budget, use just the free plan and don’t go for the premium version cause more or less it’s expensive. However, If you want to overcome your competitors and reveal their strategies and secrets so I highly recommend it and you’re gonna killing it if you use the right way .

20 May 2021: In plenty of time: slower supply chains. Walmart losing ground.
Hello, this is the Co-op Digital newsletter. Thank you for reading - send ideas and feedback to @rod on Twitter. Please tell a friend about it!
Tumblr media
[Image: A world of slower and more resilient supply chains?]
In plenty of time: the need for slower supply chains
There are shortages of lots of things at the moment: shipping and freight, computer chips (with a knock-on effect on cars and other products now that chips are in everything), oil and petrol (thanks to hackers), rare earth metals (used in chips and batteries). And so on. And the flow of goods is slower (covid and brexit).
For over 50 years the world has been optimised for the speedy, predictable and efficient delivery of cheaper products. But the world is becoming less predictable. So maybe *optimising* is the wrong approach for the future - because just in time may end up looking like just about to break. Maybe supply chains need to run slower and fatter: more slack, more give in the systems, more resilience. More spare parts in the inventory, more stock on the shelves and on the balance sheet: demand for warehouse space surges in the UK.
Walmart losing ground
Walmart says its grocery business is "rapidly" losing ground to competitors. A leaked memo outlines that it’s getting ever harder to stay on top. It’s not a surprise that discounters have grown faster, and that Amazon is catching up in general retail. But Instacart approaching parity with Walmart in online grocery is notable.
Again, the background is an unpredictable world - the pace of change is higher, driven by technology, capital, the virus and looming in the background climate. 2PM reckons that Walmart needs to invest in winning and retaining customers for Walmart+ (an unlimited free delivery membership programme a bit like Prime). And empower stores and staff “to be able to fulfill these orders, giving customers more options and better service. A lack of investment in its store employees, many of whom don’t receive benefits and rely on erratic scheduling, would sink Walmart’s subscription strategy”.
Two thoughts:
Could supporting unionisation offer a valuable difference, one that Amazon couldn’t stomach?
Should Walmart buy Fedex to build out its logistics infrastructure, before someone online like Shopify does?
Elsewhere: New 'Russian Lidl' supermarket to open in Yorkshire. Mere (the European brand for Svetofor) says it will be the cheapest supermarket in the country.
Rapid grocery delivery
US rapid grocery delivery co Gopuff is buying the UK’s Fancy. Others in the UK: Getir, Gorillas, Dija, Weezy, Zapp. Eventually one or two of these may get enough scale to consolidate.
Southern Co-op extends Snappy Shopper home deliveries to new areas - Co-operative News. The retailer has filled nearly 10,000 orders through the partnership. (Related: Sainsbury's ex-boss invested in Snappy Shopper recently.)
Amazon expands in-garage delivery service - this piece is also a decent summary of the state of in-home/in-garage grocery delivery by others like Walmart.
Buy Now Pay Later says it increases order value 85%
“When retailers remove price as a barrier, everybody wins. That’s why businesses that offer Affirm’s pay-over-time solutions see an 85% increase in average order value and a 20% lift in repeat purchasing on average.”
That’s from an advert by Affirm, a “buy now pay later” financing company. The general model for financing used to be lending - charge the consumer an interest rate. The new general model of retail financing reverses that. Now a BNPL company like Klarna, AfterPay or Affirm will make a 0% loan to the consumer, and charge a fee to the retailer because, unlike Some Bank’s credit card, BNPL is a payment channel that can increase sales value and volume.
The other key innovation seems to be having enough data that you can pre-approve customers in the shopping basket checkout itself, accepted with a click. The shopper can try the goods at home before the first payment is taken. Not all is rosy with BNPL of course - you can see that it could amplify problem debt.
Related: Klarna uses murals and QR codes to “set the record straight” on some misconceptions about how it works (why not just state them clearly?)
Community
An article about a house renting mistake that’s also an accidental advert for multi-generational living:
“Thankfully, despite being the only teenager in the 10-apartment complex, Kohout is reportedly thriving in her unique surroundings. “I have become friends with a lot of my neighbors,” said the youngster, who enjoys carousing with them, listening to their stories and eating their delicious “home-cooked” meals.”
Various things
Top 3 UK supermarkets for accessibility: 1. Co-op, 2. Waitrose, 3. Tesco. That first one does look good.
The software company in Argentina where colleagues decide your salary - see also Ricardo Semler’s experiments in radical openness at Semco.
Amazon One’s palm-scanning payments are coming to Whole Foods.
Pret a Manger heads to Tesco in battle for new customers.
Food giants respond to worries over packaging - they’re looking at compostable plastics.
Ikea starts buy-back scheme offering vouchers for old furniture.
“We've booked two summer holidays for the same time” - if the trend of booking multiple holidays and cancelling one continues, you’d guess the tourism industry will review its reservation/cancellation policies.

Plot afoot
Tumblr media
Found some fat to cut out of my spending (largely inadvertent) for next month, based on April and May as benchmarks.
I figured out that I can save $983/month just by cutting all of the following subscriptions and habits:
- Convenience food/drink
- Apple music + data backup
- Buying gifts
- RocketLawyer subscription
- Netflix subscription
- Amazon Prime
- Alcohol
- Eating at ANY restaurants
- Canceling my membership on Shopify to host my KissCrew Web site
Basically, my next goal is to find how to budget groceries on only $20/week. Shit's getting real now.
And only one tank of gas per month. $40 now that the prices have popped up. Sorry, Robin and Kathy, I just can't travel out to you right now. Literally can't afford it.
If this is actually the case, then I should be able to pay down the debt as follows: Balance currently at $3980:
- end of June - $2997
- end of July - $2014
- end of Aug - $1031
- end of Sep - $48
- end of Oct - $0
If there's any possible way I can defer last payment for Aug to Dad until after October then I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, without having to do that 3% balance transfer fee in July.
Although, worst case scenario, if I had to transfer $2997 to the new card, that would be a fee of $90. Not awful. Might actually be smart to give myself some leeway, though I'll try not to take it. And that's assuming Dad won't let me postpone the Aug payment till after October.

How the Average Person Can Actually Start An Online Business (and Scale It Into Something Real)
Tumblr media
September 1, 2020 9 min read
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
This isn’t another “how to start a business” article that’s going to leave you with generic tips and general information that sounds good on the surface but provides you no real actionable advice.
Rather, this article is raw, action-packed and may scare some of you. Continue reading at your own discretion.
A 2018 study from Bankrate revealed that only 39% of Americans could have enough savings for a $1,000 emergency fund and 44% couldn’t cover a $400 out-of-pocket emergency expense.
Starting a business can be a difficult task regardless of your financial status, but the degree of difficulty climbs much higher the lower you are on the economic class scale.
Related: The Complete, 12-Step Guide to Starting a Business
If you happen to be an average person, with an average bank account, a normal job, a family to feed and bills eating up a large percentage of your earnings, then the deck is stacked against you.
Why?
It takes money to make money. Online sales are all about eyeballs. How many people can get you to see and interact with your offers?
I tell my eBook students — “you can write the best book in the history of the universe, but if no one ever sees it, you’ll never get a sale. On the other hand, you can publish the worst book ever published and with the right marketing agency techniques and finances to back it, you’ll get some initial sales, at least until you get a few bad reviews.”
If you start your own website, open a Shopify store, sell on Amazon, social media or any other online marketplace, you will be paying for those eyeballs through either advertising or fees. Sometimes both. The only potential exception would be those with a large and active social media following.
Long story short — if you are the average person without a legitimate budget, you’re kind of screwed.
Learn from my mistakes
Sometimes we all need a reality check. I wish someone would have sat me down and told me this when I was 23 years old because I wasted tens of thousands of dollars on failed online business over the years and it was money that I didn’t have.
I’ve been the average guy with the average income, the average job and above-average bills. There was a point in my life that my monthly earnings were negative $1,000. I had to get a $20,000 personal loan to plus up my income to pay my bills for a year.
Honestly, I don’t know what the bank was thinking by giving me that loan, but I’m glad they did because I had seriously considered filing for bankruptcy and if I’m being honest, I probably should have.
This was one of the worst and most stressful time-periods of my life and if this article can save one person the heartache I went through, it’ll be worth it.
Move over success
A few years later, I was supporting US Special Forces as a military contractor in Syria. While I was sleeping in a tent, eating food out of a can and stealing WIFI from a neighboring country, I started an online jobs website for aviation professionals with security clearances interested in deploying to combat zones.
Related: Need a Business Idea? Here Are 55.
The website itself did become profitable, but it was only a few hundred dollars of profit per month. While it wasn’t a massive win, there wasn’t much like it within the industry.
The site’s uniqueness along with the targeted audience I was able to build via Facebook advertising piqued the interest of the right people which lead to a single dinner and ended with me consulting with a multimillion-dollar corporation.
Since then, it’s been all downhill. Sometimes all we need is a single breakthrough.
If I can do it from a tent in Syria, you can do it from your couch. It didn’t happen overnight though. Here is the process I had to go through to get to that point.
Overcoming average people obstacles
The mistakes I made that put me in the worst financial position of my life are the same mistakes that many others make on a daily basis.
If you are in a position where you don’t have expendable income but want to start an online business, read the following advice carefully…
Be realistic
Realize that until you fix your own financial problems, starting a legitimate business will be out of the question. This was a tough realization for me, but I’ve learned that you can have the best business concept in the history of the universe, but if you can’t fund it and do it right, it’ll never succeed.
Sell everything you can possibly sell. Especially liabilities that have monthly payments. If it wasn’t nailed down, I sold it. I lost money on most everything, but it was worth it in the long run.
Consolidate debt and cancel all unnecessary subscriptions. This allowed me to lower my monthly obligations, decrease interest rates on certain debts and pay bigger chunks towards the debt.
Focus on the money
Search for a higher paying job. Often, we underestimate ourselves and what we are capable of accomplishing. Put yourself out there and see what’s available. What’s the worst a potential employer can say, no? This is actually how I ended up in Syria. I was able to more than double my salary by accepting a position that most people wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. I even grew to love the job, but initially, I was simply making a personal sacrifice to achieve a long-term goal. As an entrepreneur, if you are not willing to make sacrifices, you are in the wrong line of work.
Use a skill, learn a skill or try something new. Stop worrying about starting a business and focus on actually earning money. I was able to earn an additional $1,500 a month by writing content for people’s blogs, creating social media content and writing small informational eBooks. Here is a solid hint. If you want to make money, be willing to do the grunt work. Do the things that people don’t like to do themselves.
It wasn’t glamorous, but it accelerated my debt pay off. I was able to get most of my business by joining niche forums and Facebook groups. Here is a solid hint – niche forums and Facebook groups are two of the only places on the internet that you can get those eyeballs for free, but you have to be offering something they are actively seeking.
I actually hadn’t ever done any of the services that I started offering, but with a little practice and learning from people on YouTube, I was able to surpass customers’ expectations.

Starting a business and scaling
Once you are out of debt or close to it and have at least $2,000 to invest, it’s time to start your online business.
Here’s the process I like to follow:
Don’t think major corporations. Rather, start small and build. Use the new skills you learned to earn extra money during your debt payoff phase and start something you know can be profitable. We all have our dream business, but at this point, it’s more important to start something low risk and stable. Learn to be passionate about the process and business in general rather than a specific idea or concept.
Once you have a steady flow of business, figure out how to outsource using freelancers. Implement processes to take yourself out of the equation to the point that you are simply managing the businesses and dealing with customers. This will allow you to continue earning from the business, but it’ll free you up to work towards your next business.
Take the earnings from the first business and invest them into your next business concept. Ideally, you will only be investing the profits from business number one into business number two. This will allow you to continue to build your personal savings from your day job while still allowing you to invest in online businesses.
Rinse and repeat.
Don’t rush the process. Enjoy the journey.
Personally, I like to have three to five businesses running at any given time. Two or three of them will be low-end grunt work type businesses that fund my ideal businesses.
The grunt work businesses are profitable because everyone hates to do their own grunt work. It’s the reason people pay to have their houses cleaned and their lawns mowed.
You can easily and successfully scale without having to invest money earned from your full-time job. This allows you to continue to save and grow financially while you are building something real.
Takeaways
Starting a business can be difficult and is a process that shouldn’t be rushed.
In reality, it’s a fairly simple process if you are patient.
Fix yourself
Focus on the money
Start with something low risk
Outsource
Invest earnings into other business concepts
Repeat
In my opinion, this is the one process that gives the average person the best chance of being able to start a successful online business.

SamCart Review: Does It Live Up To The Hype?

SamCart Review: Does It Live Up To The Hype?
One thing that all business owners have in common is the desire to increase conversions and make more sales.
Many factors will affect the conversion rate of your products, but one of the most significant factors is the shopping cart platform you use.
A lot of business owners don’t realize that the average abandoned cart rate is a staggering 79.17%! That’s a shocking statistic to discover, especially if you’re a business owner who’s been trying to sell your products online.
Everything else being equal, if you’re using the wrong shopping cart platform, your business will just not reach its full potential.
SamCart is a shopping cart tool that aims to help businesses of all kinds to grow and increase conversions.
In this SamCart review, we will put it to the test to see if it can do what it promises.
What is SamCart?
SamCart is one of the leading shopping cart tools on the market that promises to help businesses make more sales.
It allows you to build your sales pages, shopping carts, and process transactions.
You may be familiar with eCommerce platforms like Shopify. This is often a starting place for eCom business owners and drop shippers. While it’s pretty good for getting your business off the ground, it generally lacks the advanced features needed to scale a business effectively. Because of this, a lot of businesses make the switch to a platform like SamCart.
If you’re a business owner or marketer struggling with conversions, SamCart may be able to help you increase your sales due to its laser-focused conversion-rate optimisation (CRO) features.
Since SamCart was founded in 2013 by Scott and Brian Moran, and since then, it has rapidly evolved and gained several exciting features that we’ll be covering later on in this article.
Who Is SamCart For?
SamCart is used to help businesses sell pretty much anything online. This includes physical and digital products, services, and even courses.
SamCart gives you the ability to sell products at a one-off cost, a recurring subscription, or even offer your customers a payment plan.
The platform focuses on giving the use the ability to create high-converting sales pages, funnels and shopping carts. It’s not a platform for creating a huge store with hundreds of products. In that case, something like Shopify would probably be better suited. However, SamCart can certainly be integrated with a large store, in order to hone in on sales of specific products.
However, if you have a smaller number of products, then SamCart could potentially be all you need to sell your products successfully online.
Some examples of who SamCart can work well for include:
Course creators
Coaches & Consultants
Authors
Physical Product Sellers
Digital Product Sellers
Agencies
One of my friends used to sell eBooks and courses related to fitness, and I feel like if he had known about SamCart at the time, he probably would have made a lot more sales. At the time, I believe he was using something quite basic like Shopify, which just didn’t give him the same amount of conversion control that SamCart gives you.
Free Stuff From SamCart
As you will see in this in-depth review, SamCart has a lot to offer. While it’s not perfect, it is certainly different from most other shopping cart platforms out there. However, all the features can be difficult to convey in a single article.
The SamCart creators have gone to great lengths to show people how effective this SaaS tool is at selling products and generating revenue online. Because of this, SamCart has a few free bonuses you can take advantage of:

SamCart Pros & Cons
Just like any other software, there are some pros and cons to SamCart, so let’s take a look at them.
SamCart Pros
Unmatched revenue-optimization
Easily create beautiful pages
Great list of integrations
Robust reporting & analytics
0% transaction fees
SamCart Cons
Can’t use it to build a store with a massive selection of products
Only email support available
Some features are not available on the starter plan
SamCart Features
SamCart has a huge list of features which all combine perfectly to help businesses lift their conversions if used correctly.
Let’s break them down to help you get a better understanding of how they can be used.
Sales Page design
One of the first and most important features that SamCart has to offer is sales page design.
You can easily create beautiful sales pages using the easy-to-use drag and drop builder inside of SamCart.
There is no limit on how many pages or products you can create, which gives you the flexibility to try out lots of templates for A/B testing if you want to.
I also like this feature because it meant I can create more product lines using different landing pages, all from within the same account. Annoyingly, many SaaS tools put significant restrictions on what you can create.
Using SamCart, you can create both multi-step sales pages and one-page checkouts. This makes it a versatile platform that can be used to sell pretty much any kind of product.
Order Bumps & One-Click Up-Sells
Order bumps, one-click up-sells and down-sells are highly effective tools in increase your conversion rate and boost your total cart value.
If you’re not familiar with order bumps then basically, they’re like one-time offers you can include in your funnel, usually on the checkout page. They work especially well if the order bump is a complementary product to the leasing product that is offered on the sales page.
For example, let’s imagine you’re a fitness coach who’s trying to sell an eBook. A great order bump would be to offer the audio version of the book for an additional cost.
This works well because most people just don’t get time to read the eBooks they buy and so, being offered the audio version for a few extra bucks is an attractive offer to many. With a simple tick, they can add the audio book to their cart, and you increase the total cart value as a result.
The one-click upsell is a separate, but complementary product that is offered to the customer on a separate page. Once the customer has clicked the button to accept the first offer, they are then diverted the the up-sell page.
The reason it’s called one-click up-sell is that the payment info is already saved, meaning your customer only needs to click a button to purchase, instead of entering in their credit card details.
If, however, the customer declines the first offer, then you can have them diverted to one more offer at a lower price, known as the down-sell offer.
Coupons & Discounts
The next feature is the ability to create coupons and discounts.
Creating coupons and discounts can work extremely well to promote your products and can therefore also help you increase conversions over a given period.
This SamCart feature is also much more advanced than most shopping cart/landing page alternatives out there. The reason being is that, with SamCart, you create both simple coupons that apply to one-time transactions, as well as recurring transaction coupons if you need to.
Template Library
SamCart has a vey large selection of templates for both sales and checkout pages.
Personally, I do like the look of the templates as they’re modern and professional, yet simple. You also have a wide variety of templates for different types of pages and carts, which could prove to be useful if you ever decide to switch the type of products that you sell, or if you operate businesses in different industries.
Recurring Payments & Subscriptions
SamCart can also help you process recurring payments and subscriptions.
This is great because I have heard several stories from friends who have used certain other shopping cart or eCommerce platforms that don’t allow you to process recurring payments and subscriptions. This then causes real headaches, as they have to go through a lot of effort and extra expense by using two cart platforms and trying to integrate them.
You also have some great options inside of the SamCart subscriptions area that many other SaaS tools don’t have. For example, you can create free trials, paid trials, and even payment plans. This further increases the likelihood of you making sales.
Plus, you can manage all your customers from your customer portal and they can also cancel their own subscriptions easily whenever they need to.
Customers being able to cancel their own subscriptions is something that will save you many wasted hours replying to customer support emails.
A/B Testing
SamCart has detailed A/B testing functionality allowing its customers to understand exactly what is converting and what isn’t.
Using SamCart, you can not only split-test your sales pages, but also the actual carts themselves, which is a pretty cool feature. This gives you the ability to tweak the components of your cart to optimize for maximum conversions.
Subscription Saver (Dunning)
When it comes to other platforms that do allow you to process recurring transactions, they can often have a problem with creating many failed transactions. This, of course, is not good for business!
Often, these platforms will just treat a failed transaction as a customer canceling, which of course means you would lose out on a lot of revenue. This is not the case with SamCart, as it will keep trying to charge the customer on auto-pilot until the sale goes through.
As you can imagine, this is going to be a tremendous tool in your online business arsenal.
App Integrations
SamCart has a great list of integrations, as it is compatible with a number of leading autoresponders, membership site platforms, and payment processors.
Email integrations include:
Aweber
GetResponse
ConvertKit
ConstantContact
iContact
ActiveCampaign
MailChimp
Maropos
Membership site platform integrations include:
Memberpress
Thinkific
Wishlist
Optimizepress
Membermouse
Kajabi
DigitalAccessPass
Payment Processor Integrations include:
Braintree
Stripe
Authorize.net
Paypal
CRM/Marketing automation integrations include:
Klaviyo
Ontraport
Drip
Infusionsoft
Hubspot
Other integrations:
ShipStation
Zapier
WordPress
Intercom
As you can see, SamCart has a solid list of direct integrations. However, if you do need more for some reason, then you can always use Zapier.
If you are interested in a shopping cart solution that is specifically designed to be used with WordPress then check out my CartFlows review.
Affiliate Center
SamCart also has a powerful affiliate management tool you can use.
This is another great feature if you want to recruit affiliates to sell your products for you. You won’t need to use an expensive third party solution for this as you’ll be able to manage it all from within your SamCart dashboard.
You also have full control in terms of the percentages that you set up for your affiliates. You can create standard commission rates or even have a tied compensation plan to incentivise those affiliates that are prepared to work harder to promote your products.
Abandoned Cart Feature
Do you remember that shocking statistic I told you about earlier? 79.17% of online shoppers abandon their cart before completing the steps on your checkout page.
I think, you, like me, agree that you’d want more than one in four people who add a product to their cart, to actually convert.
The Cart abandonment feature is something that could help with exactly that. Using this feature, you can engage with the customer who has abandoned their cart and follow up with them later to try to make the sale.
For example, you might set up SamCart to notify your autoresponder, when a cart is abandoned. Then, that lead will be added to an email automation sequence based on the abandoned cart, and receive periodic emails from you encouraging them to complete their purchase.
In this automation sequence, you can remind them of the product or potentially offer them a discount to make the sale more likely.
Now imagine the conversion increase of when you have something like this in place, and hundreds or even thousands of people adding your products to their cart. If you don’t already have this set up in your business then you’re just leaving money on the table.
Advanced Analytics
It’s great to have all these conversion rate optimisation tools set up ion your business. But if you can’t accurately measure them, then you’re not going to be able to scale effectively.
Luckily, SamCart also has detailed analytics that help you understand which steps of your cart and sales pages are converting.
If you do decide to go buy SamCart, or even [get a free trial], you’ll quickly realise the benefit of choosing a platform that has integrated analytics so you can see clearly what’s working for your and what is not.
Core Commerce Features
Lastly, I want to tell you about some of the core commerce features inside of SamCart. These are features that didn’t fit into any category but are still useful for most businesses.
Taxes & VAT
SamCart lets you collect any taxes & VAT.
This is a feature that many cart platforms ignore, so it’s nice to see SamCart making things easier for their customers in that sense.
Partial Refunds
You can also issue partial refunds if you feel that is suited. This is great because partial refunds can be a hassle. With SamCart, partial refunds are easy to issue.
Custom Fields
If you sell products that mean you need to collect custom requirements, like shirt size, then you’ll need to use custom fields.
If you’re looking to sell products that need to use custom requirements, then SamCart is one of the best tools you use, IMO.
SCA, GDPR, PCI Compliant
With recent heavy SCA, GDPR, and PCI changes, you must stay compliant, otherwise, you might face fines.
Fortunately SamCart is compliant with all of these regulations, so you can use it to easily set up your business how you need to and be compliant from the get-go.
What I like about SamCart
While SamCart has a lot of great features, there are a few things in particular that I like about this platform.
As I have mentioned a lot throughout this article, conversion-rate optimisation is at the heart of what SamCart can offer you.
I’m talking about the order bumps, one-click upsells, A/B testing, and detailed analytics. Of course, these features will not sell your products for you, but they definitely can make a massive difference to your conversions, if you use them correctly.
Plus, the templates combine well with these features too, as they are also focused on converting visitors with clear layouts and CTA buttons.
I also like that SamCart doesn’t ignore the less flashy requirements, and helps business owners with tax obligations and in staying compliant with important laws.
Finally, I also particularly like how easy it is to use SamCart to scale up your business with your own affiliate program.
What I don’t like about SamCart
There isn’t much negative to say about SamCart, except for two things, in my opinion.
For me, the first thing I find it a bit of a let-down that some of the best features are only available in the $199 per month “Scale” plan.
This includes:
Cart abandonment
Built-in A/B testing
Affiliate center
Subscription saver (dunning)
If SamCart could make one exception, I think they should at least allow all plans to be able to do A/B testing as this is an important part of growing a business.
Secondly, if you need to reach support then you only have the option of email. I’d prefer to also have the option fo live chat support. However, I have heard that SamCart’s email support is actually very good, so I guess it’s not too bad.
SamCart Pricing
SamCart has three pricing plans. There are some differences between the plans, as I already mentioned, so make sure you are aware of them.

SamCart Alternatives
I also want to let you know about some SamCart alternatives which you may like the look of.

1. ThriveCart
Firstly, we have ThriveCart.
ThriveCart is also a powerful shopping cart platform that has features very similar to SamCart.
At the moment, ThriveCart is still in early stages so there are lifetime options available at a one-time fee. Given that most shopping cart SaaS tools, including SamCart, come with monthly subscriptions, ThriveCart’s lifetime plans are a great deal.
However, what I would say about ThriveCart is that some of the designs of the shopping cart look a little outdated.
Still, in terms of price for features, I think it would be quite hard to beat.
Starting price: $495 one time fee (lifetime)
2. ClickFunnels
ClickFunnels is one of the most popular funnel builders with over 120,000 members.
It aims to be the best landing page and funnel builder platform for online businesses by offering the following core features:
Drag-and-drop funnel builder
Checkout platform (somewhat limited compared to SamCart)
Membership site builder
Autoresponder
Affiliate management
It does have a great list of features, so it’s worth checking out if you want to see the full list of features that ClickFunnels offers.
The one thing I personally don’t like about ClickFunnels is their templates as they look somewhat outdated and are all very similar to each other. Having said that, they can be customised to a great degree.
Starting price: $97 per month
3. Kartra
The third and final alternative I recommend is Kartra.
Kartra is also still in the early stages but has already proven to have some powerful features.
Here’s a list of the Kartra core features:
Funnel builder
Checkout platform (also somewhat limited compared to SamCart)
Membership site builder
Autoresponder
Affiliate management
Helpdesks
Video hosting
Calendar
As you can see, it’s quite similar to ClickFunnels with some minor differences in the features.
Kartra is more of an all-in-one online businesses solution and offers additional tools like the help desk and video hosting functions.
From my experience, the autoresponder inside of Kartra is also better than ClickFunnels’ autoresponder, as it has more triggers for tags and automation sequences. Having said that, I personally prefer to use a stand-alone autoresponder service since it’s such an important part of a business.
Starting price: $99 per month
Final Thoughts
SamCart has proven to be a strong solution for businesses struggling with high cart abandonment and low conversions.
The reason it works well for increasing conversions is the features like the order bumps and one-click up-sells, as well as its strong analytics capabilities.
Combining these with the beautiful templates it has to offer, you can see from my SamCart review, why it works so well. Plus, it also has great payment flexibility, as you can offer payment plans, accept Google and Apple pay, and also process recurring transactions.
If you’re selling or looking to sell anything online and want to check out SamCart for yourself, you can get a free 14-day trial by clicking here.

Ecom Success Academy is a training program that teaches you how to build and scale a lucrative dropshipping business.
In our Ecom Success Academy review, we’ll tell you if it actually teaches you that or if it’s just another generic dropshipping course.
Dropshipping might have one of the lowest barriers to entry of any business model, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
You have to define your niche, build a storefront, find products, and figure out complicated ad campaign tools, and find other ways to stay profitable.
Then, you have to learn a new skillset when you want to scale your store.
Ecom Success Academy promises to teach you the entire process, from your first product sale to scaling your store and selling it for millions.
Here’s our full Ecom Success Academy review.
FAQ
1.) What is Ecom Success Academy? Ecom Success Academy is a training program that teaches you how to start, grow, and scale a successful dropshipping store. Ecom Success Academy’s main content is a series of 136 video lessons on how to start, grow, and scale a dropshipping business. There are 8 modules, but the lessons are split among the first 7. The first 7 modules cover Shopify, product sourcing, Facebook ads, email marketing, building a team, project management, and exit strategies. The 8th module is the bonus module.
2.) When was Ecom Success Academy created? The first version was released in 2016. The newest version is Ecom Success Academy 2019.
3.) Why are there multiple versions of the course? This course is re-released every year with updated information and new bonuses to stay relevant.
4.) Are there bonuses? Yes. There are actually two separate bonus areas. The first is the 8th module of the main content. This module offers 4 weeks of daily live coaching with Adrian, an in-depth look into Adrian’s email marketing strategies, further outsourcing tips, a cloud-based app that helps identify hot-selling products, and a case study of a $152k dropshipping store. The other bonuses include weekly “Profit Power Hour” webinar trainings with Adrian, a lifetime 10% Shopify discount, and a list of Shopify apps Adrian uses on his stores.
5.) What do the weekly Profit Power Hour webinars cover? In these, Adrian shares results and updates of his current campaigns, shares how he achieved those results, discusses current trends and topics in dropshipping, and answers Ecom Success Academy member questions.
6.) Why are there multiple yearly editions of Ecom Success Academy? Ecom Success Academy is a Shopify Education Partner. This program requires Adrian to update the course on a yearly basis. More on the Shopify Education Partner program in FAQ #17.
7.) Who is Adrian Morrison? Adrian Morrison is one of the planet’s top Facebook marketers. He consults on Facebook ads with multi-million dollar companies and top social media influences to drastically increase their traffic and revenue. And of course, he’s the founder of Ecom Success Academy.
8.) What is dropshipping? Dropshipping is an online business model where you sell products but hold no inventory. You build an online storefront and list products from suppliers like Aliexpress. When a customer places an order, you forward their order and shipping information to the supplier. The supplier ships the product directly to the customer.
9.) Why is dropshipping so popular? Many reasons. First, the low entry barrier. You don’t need inventory, so startup costs are minimal. Building a complete store on Shopify or a related platform takes only minutes. Also, location independence. You only need a laptop and a wifi connection to start a dropshipping business. A low entry barrier business model that you can work on from anywhere is very attractive.
10.) What is free + shipping? Free + shipping is a sales tactic that promises the customer a free product, but all they have to do is pay shipping. The idea is that customers are more likely to pay shipping on a free item than to buy an item with free shipping, even if the shipping price in the former is the same as the sale price in the latter. Works best with inexpensive products, as too high of shipping mitigates the whole effect. This tactic is emphasized in Ecom Success Academy. Many use their free + shipping product as a way to upsell customers on pricier items.
11.) Is dropshipping still a viable business model in 2019? Yes. What works in dropshipping changes quite fast, sometimes month-to-month. However, you can still succeed in dropshipping in 2019.
12.) Is dropshipping a good long-term business model? It can work long-term, but it’s not the best way.
13.) What’s the difference between dropshipping and Amazon’s Fulfillment By Amazon Program? Fulfillment By Amazon requires you to purchase the inventory up front. Amazon handles all the fulfillment. Dropshipping does not require you to purchase inventory.
14.) What’s the difference between Shopify and Amazon? Shopify is an e-commerce platform, while Amazon is a marketplace. You can build your own store on Shopify, whereas you simply sell your products with no store on Amazon. However, Amazon made Shopify their preferred platform a few years ago, meaning you can list your Shopify store’s products on Amazon.
15.) What is Shopify? Shopify is one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms, run by a Canadian company with the same name. This is the platform Adrian uses and teaches you how to use in Ecom Success Academy.
16.) Does Ecom Success Academy cover any other e-commerce platforms? No.
17.) Does Shopify offer a free trial? Yes. They offer a 14-day free trial. You don’t have to put a credit card down, so no need to worry about cancelling before being charged.
18.) Does my Ecom Success Academy purchase cover a Shopify subscription? No. However, you get a 10% lifetime discount.
19.) What is the Shopify Education Partners program? It’s a program Shopify developed to highlight the best e-commerce courses. Shopify carefully reviews the content for accuracy and quality before issuing a Shopify Education Partner Approved Course” badge. The designation has strict requirements and Partners have to resubmit their course for review every year to ensure course content is updated. Currently, there are only 7 Shopify Partner courses.
20.) Which courses are Shopify Education Partners? Ecom Success Academy, Dropship Lifestyle, Dropship Academy 2.0, The Dropship Club, E-COM Launch, Ecomkers, and Start & Scale Your Online Store.
21.) How much does Ecom Success Academy cost? Ecom Success Academy costs $2,495.
22.) Does Ecom Success Academy have a free trial? No.
23.) What is Ecom Success Academy’s refund policy? Ecom Success Academy does not offer refunds.
24.) Are there any upsells? No.
25.) Does Ecom Success Academy have an affiliate program? Yes. You can earn 40% commissions, which is $998.80 per sale. There are also contests where you have a chance at more earnings.
26.) What is Ecom Success Academy’s BBB rating? F. They’ve had a lot of complaints in the past on there.
27.) Is Ecom Success Academy a scam? No. Aside from the massive amount of course content and bonuses, Shopify themselves approved this course as part of their Shopify Education Partner program.
28.) What complaints/criticisms have been made of Ecom Success Academy? Many criticize its price and no-refund policy. The price is fair given the content amount in my opinion. They don’t make you aware of the no-refund policy until the bottom of the checkout page. It’s there, but it could be more prominent.
29.) What makes Ecom Success Academy different than similar courses? Ecom Success Academy’s main selling point is the level of content. It is extremely thorough and always up-to-date, thanks to their Shopify Partner status.

Ecom Success Academy Review – Overview
Ecom Success Academy is a training program that teaches you how to build and scale an online store to 6, 7, or even 8 figures. It was created by Adrian Morrison.
Adrian Morrison is one of the planet’s top Facebook experts. Tai Lopez even named Adrian as one of his mentors once.
Born in Madison, Mississippi, Adrian attended the University of Mississippi with plans to pursue law.
That dream would be short-lived when his father lost his multi-million dollar retirement in the WorldCom scandal of the early 2000’s.
He then abandoned his lawyer ambitions and pursued internet marketing.
Fast forward through years of learning, and he now runs multi-million dollar e-com and affiliate marketing businesses. In addition, he gives talks on these subjects and develops e-com and affiliate marketing software.
He also gives away cash on his public Facebook.
Adrian’s compiled everything he knows about e-commerce and Facebook ads into a course called Ecom Success Academy. It’s not just dropshipping, either. There’s also print-on-demand content inside.
Each year, Adrian rereleases the course with updated information and more bonuses as part of his Shopify Partners agreement.
Is Ecom Success Academy worth a buy?
Sounds like it so far, but read the rest of our Ecom Success Academy review for the full details.
Product
Ecom Success Academy’s main content is a series of 136 video lessons split among 7 modules: 40 lessons on Shopify,12 lessons on Sourcing Products , 63 lessons on Facebook, 8 lessons on Email Marketing, 7 lessons on Building Your A-Team, 4 lessons on Project Management, and 2 lessons on Long-Term Exit Plans. For more organization, there are submodules within each module that group related lessons together.
The 8th module is the bonus section of the main content. These bonuses include 30 days of daily live coaching with Adrian, an in-depth look at Adrian’s email marketing strategies, more tips on outsourcing, an app that identifies best-selling products, and case studies of one of Adrian’s most successful product campaigns.
However, there are even more bonuses separate from the bonus module: weekly “Power Hour” webinar trainings with Adrian, a lifetime 10% Shopify discount, a list of several apps Adrian uses on his stores, and training on how to find and license art for print-on-demand products.
Module 1 is general Shopify training.
You’ll learn everything from store set up, to listing your products, to brand building and more in Shopify’s 40 lessons.
Then you learn a lot about product sourcing in Module 2.
In addition to learning content about dropshipping product sourcing and print-on-demand products, Adrian divulges his secrets for finding the best products and how he negotiates with his suppliers for great prices.
Adrian is one of the most prolific Facebook marketers in the world, and he shows it with Module 3.
At 63 lessons, this module alone makes up almost half the course. Everything you need to know about Facebook ads can be found in these lessons.
It is one of the most comprehensive Facebook ads trainings I’ve seen in a course that isn’t focused solely on Facebook ads. Everything from ad types to retargeting to split testing is covered in Module 3.
Module 4 teaches email marketing basics.
Adrian covers email setup, multiple types of email promotions, and other tips for increasing conversions with email. He included some email templates you can use for your own Shopify promotions.
By the end of Module 4, you’ve learned everything about running your store as a one-man operation.
At some point, you’ll need to offload work onto someone else, which is what Module 5 teaches.
In Module 5, you’ll learn how to build a successful team that allows you to scale your store with as little headache as possible. This is a critical step to scaling, as your hiring decisions could be the difference between successful scaling and running your store into the ground.
Adrian covers how to hire someone for product research, customer service, social media management, and overall project management. He also gives you places to find these people, such as Upwork.
You could apply these lessons to any business, really.
Then, there’s project management in Module 6.
As you grow your team and your store, you’ll shift away from “on-the-ground” tasks and towards the big picture. Management skills are essential to scale your store smoothly. In here, you’ll learn how to manage your team in order to get the most out of them.
He covers apps like Slack and Asana, both great project management tools.
Again, these lessons can be applied to business models other than dropshipping.
At the end sits Module 7.
Most dropshippers eventually want to exit the market, and they naturally want to reap the maximum profit from their store. Adrian has 2 lessons teaching you how to do so in this module.
One lesson shows you how to make a Profit & Loss statement, a critical component of demonstrating your store’s value. The other lesson teaches you about ways to add value to your store before you sell it.
I’m glad Adrian did well with Modules 5-8. Once your store hits a certain income level, it’s nearly impossible to grow your store without scaling. Most dropshippers quickly grasp the basics of running a Shopify store, but the hard part is building a team and “formalizing” your business with project management procedures.
Many dropshipping courses unfortunately don’t teach that stuff very well, but I think Ecom Success Academy did a pretty good job of it.
When you’re done with Modules 1-7, there’s the bonus module containing your coaching calls, email marketing and outsourcing tips, app list, and case study.
Unfortunately, the 4 weeks of live coaching already happened. Adrian did it for the first 30 days that the course was out, but you can access the recordings if you buy the course.
Then there’s the quick email marketing bonus.
There are a few short lessons about product launches and solo ads in this bonus.
As for the outsourcing bonus, Adrian covers the soft skills you’ll need as the boss of your business.
Things like how to hire VAs, how to structure your team, and how to create a business culture that leads to success are all covered.
Adrian dubbed his product-seeking app the Sizzle Product Sniper.
This is his personal software that identifies high-converting ads, locates the ads’ products on Aliexpress, and finds the best deals on those products so you can instantly add them to your store.
It’s useful both for swiping ad ideas and finding profitable products.
The case studies he included lets you see Adrian in action.
He shows you the products he sold, the ads he wrote, and the audiences he targeted that earned him a combined total of $1.2 million over 4 campaigns.
Time for more bonuses, starting with the “Profit Power Hour” trainings.
These are weekly, live webinars. In these Profit Power Hour webinars, Adrian covers e-com industry developments, answers member questions, and discusses his latest ad campaign results.
Power Hours happen every Tuesday at 9pm EST in his private Profit Power Hour Facebook group. If you miss one, they’re recorded and added to the member’s area in Ecom Success Academy.
This direct access to Adrian is one of the most valuable pieces of Ecom Success Academy, as you get to see his knowledge in action and ask for help on your own store.
Also, he posts an “after-party” video on his public Facebook after each Profit Power Hour. They’re only a few minutes long and he gives away a few hundred dollars cash during these videos, so they might be worth a look.
The next bonus is his list of Shopify apps.
Adrian uses every app on this list to enhance conversions, retarget ads, and recover “abandoned cart” customers.
One app you’d recognize is Mailchimp.
If you’ve ever dabbled in e-commerce, you’d also recognize Abandonment Protector, the app that helps recover sales from customers who added items to their cart then never checked out.
Then, there’re two Facebook ads app called Pixel Magic and Retargeting Made Easy. Pixel Magic lets you install your Facebook pixel onto your Shopify store, while Retargeting Made Easy helps you retarget your ads for more sale.
Better Shipping is also on there. It lets you customize everything related to your store’s shipping.
Teelaunch is another one of Adrian’s favorites. This app streamlines the print-on-demand process by letting you upload your design then choose from over 65 items to print it on.
Finally, Adrian uses the Conversion app to add a sense of urgency through the use of countdown timers. You know, the kinds you see on every online course’s sales page.
This increases conversions since people don’t want to “miss out”.
If you’re looking to try your hand at print-on-demand, he even has training on how to find and license art.
He gives you a few lessons on finding artists and using their art to create a profitable print-on-demand store without having to do a lick of design work.
Finally, the Shopify discount.
Thanks to his Shopify Partner status, Adrian is able to extend you a 10% lifetime discount on a Shopify subscription. More on Shopify here.
Ecom Success Academy has an endless amount of useful material inside the course. I have to say I’m impressed.
Upsells
Ecom Success Academy has no upsells. There isn’t much to upsell anyways, as this program has a ton in it.
That might change in future releases of Ecom Success Academy.
Pricing
Ecom Success Academy costs $2,495 up front, or you can opt for 3 monthly payments of $997.
That might be expensive, but considering the amount of content and support you get, that’s a decent price.
A basic Shopify subscription costs $29 per month. You’ll need to buy this separately, although you do get a 14-day free trial as well as Adrian’s discount.
Affiliate Program
Ecom Success Academy has an affiliate program. Affiliates can earn 40% commissions per sale, which equals $998.8 per sale. 3 sales per week would earn you almost $150,000 per year.
Not too bad.
Technically, Adrian calls it a joint venture program, but it operates largely the same as any other affiliate program.
However, you can also earn prizes as an affiliate.
There’s a Sales Contest, and Overall Leads Contest, and an “Everyone Wins” Leads Contest.
To sign up for their affiliate program, you have to go here and fill in your information.
Recap
Ecom Success Academy is not a scam. In fact, it’s the furthest thing from it. For $2,500, you’re getting an insane amount of content and weekly live updates from the course creator himself.
But if that wasn’t enough, you can’t really call this a scam if it’s 1 of only 7 dropshipping courses with the Shopify seal of approval.
Of course, Shopify’s been around forever and is starting to get some competition as other platforms move to take market share.
So does Shopify still work in 2019? I’ll tell you what I think here.

Adrian Morrison’s Ecom Success Academy Review – is it legit?
Shopify carefully reviews the content for accuracy and quality before issuing a “Shopify Education Partner Approved Course” badge.
30.) Comparable programs: Drop Ship Lifestyle, Dropship Academy 2.0, The Dropship Club

How to launch an independent magazine, by Delayed Gratification
February 22 2018
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-to-launch-an-independent-magazine-22nd-february-2018-tickets-40937174190?aff=es2
In this class you will:
-Learn how to turn your magazine idea into reality
-Find out how to identify a successful editorial niche
-Understand the nuts and bolts of commissioning writers and designers
-See how to pull together a winning subscription, distribution and marketing plan
-Discover how to survive and thrive beyond the first year
You will leave with a good insight into the independent publishing industry and a strong idea of how to set about launching an independent magazine.
Thoughts: I actually found this event on eventbrite a few months before it happened, sent it to my friend who I knew would be interested (hi Ayesha!) and then forgot about it. Then the day before, she asks if I want to go because her friend cancelled so she had an extra ticket, so I ended up going with her haha. I’ve always been vaguely interested in starting a magazine, and was actually the co-editor of an online art magazine aaaages ago with my online friend (hi Angela!), but was never really serious about it. While some of this information was not new for me (a lot of it overlapped with your typical entrepreneurship/startup advice, ie. finding a niche), the advice that was specific to launching indie magazines (logistics and business aspects) was very useful and interesting, and I really appreciated the numbers they threw in from their own business. Overall, was a very fun and honest look at the business, and the organisers were super friendly. Also left with a free copy of Delayed Gratification (their mag), which was cool to read.
  EDITED NOTES
 Introduction
Met early 20s in dubai, journalism students, working as time out editors, learnt how to make print mags together / fell in love with it
Went in different directions, and then all ended up back in london at 30
Just over 7 years now
Named independent magazine editors of the year 2017
Most independent magazines are losing if not hemorrhaging money - lots of vanity projects, made as a shop front for creative agencies.
Attrition rate is extraordinary. Intense desire to make them, but the number that make it past issue 2 / 3 is very low.
Lower barriers to entry than ever before - people are used to them, a lot more need for them (solace in print from digital world) + tools are there + there are all these places to sell them now (mag culture!)
Bad news: will probably break your heart, high failure rate, odds are against you, difficult economic model to make work, are not immune to pressures in mainstream press (but don’t face: massive debt built up in 80s/90s for rapid expansion, pensions liabilities, offices)
Were dreamers + journalists: novices at nuts and bolts of making money/funding
90% of success is turning up - determination to keep going even in early years
Maybe expand into documentaries / books in the future
Key lessons
1) you probably shouldn’t launch an independent magazine - sink which you pour your money, dreams, hopes
Brainstorm: Why do indie mags fail?
Not thinking about how you pay for issue 2 → run out of cash v quickly (where frequency comes into it, ie. weekly)
Just getting visibility: Hard to find your audience - with so much competition, etc
Often have expertise in one area, but lack expertise in another function that’s vital to bringing product to market
Content burn out, esp. If you make big commitments (launch with huge interview etc) - second album syndrome? Not to create too many structures that need to be filled in early days.
2) ^ can be overcome with a niche - you need a niche
Fat brad magazine
Terrible people magazine
Slightly foxed, nutmeg (scottish football periodical), mc1r (only about redheads)
Their niche: slow journalism, something to champion
What it did for them:
issue 1 cover was by obama’s hope poster artist (+ issue 5, limited edition posters, interview = all for free)
Content by Interviews (henry kissinger, etc) + writers - because it resonated with them, wanted to support it = can use those people’s credibility to add to theirs
Coverage + press: something to talk about (today program on radio 4: one 6 minute interview got them ~400 subscriptions = able to be condensed and easily explained/summed up)
Could have been slightly more bullish about fast news in the start, should you be worried about alienation??
Brainstorm: A name and niche
Colors magazine - activism & protest issue
Trend (mindfulness) vs Niche
Helps to sort of person we appeal to, what need am i filling that hasn’t been filled, what is my spin
Need to be passionate (committed, reason without a doubt), not egotistical, believe in your idea, ask for help a lot, honest
3) you need to think about the business
Beyond issue 1, what it is to run a magazine business (VAT returns, subscription systems, fb ads)
Frequency & cost
Weekly or monthly is really really fast. Always easier to go from quarterly down, because it shows you’re getting better, etc (awks if you have to go the other way).
Issue 1: 12 pounds, issue 2: 10 pounds.
When setting price for individual issue, what would you charge for a year’s subscriptions? You want to offer subscribers an appealing discount (that you’re not losing on each subscription)
Christmas is key for the indie mag industry - big burst of subscriptions as gifts. So don’t launch in jan or feb lol, christmas run is key, be well established for this! 50+% this year was from last 5 weeks of sales
Don’t launch in summer - nobody gets subscriptions then, more newstands then
Print, digital, or both?
People don’t want to pay for digital issues, not that captivated by complicated stuff you can do on there.
You have to charge VAT + pay percentage to platform for digital copies
People expect to pay less for digital copies
But there are some digital projects that are fascinating - de correspondent (similar premise, crowdfunded, purely digital in dutch, really collaborative / self contained digital ecosystem. / community driven)
Physicality - You can get people to pay for a physical / tangible object that they just don’t for digital, they have relationships with them.
Latterly (weekly newsletter, after building huge online audience for free, now printed publication)
^ merits of this?? Passion project more bc of time sink??
Subscriptions vs newsstand
Subscription systems
Gocardless (pay direct debits)
Chargebee - portal
V difficult to make money out of newsstand sales - 50% of the cover price, 3-6 months after mags are sold, and they generally only sell 60% of the ones you’ve sent them. Treated as marketing for subscriptions.
Not difficult to set them up
In London / UK: Ra&Olly, MMS, Smiths (difficult + unresponsive + dont fulfill, but have a stranglehold on mags in country)
Paid: gold star media (get you in to salons, hotels, airport lounges, etc)
Is your magazine one that a company would like to support? Team up because they really like it
Customer
Site sales: shopify
Fulfilment: newsstand
Adjust your expectations
4) take subscriptions!!
Newsstands are hard
It’s money upfront, will help with print bills, cash flow, etc
Community building
More chances for someone to like someone
Alternatives: Kickstarter, indiegogo (to test out if appetite is there)
Subscription renewals / Direct debits ?
Do not build your business model around advertising, it’s so diffused + competitive, can’t do trackability on print issues
No ads > bad ads
Corporate work - if you prove you can make mags, you can make them for other people too
Magazine as a broader way of selling your skill set
plan for issue 2/3/4 already + worst case scenarios
5) you need to make something special
Making your magazine:
Commissioning editorial content
There are a lot of really good writers out there desperate to work for you
Draw up a commissioning form - rights and responsibilities, deadlines, etc
Approach writers that you like - tell about mag & ask them to pitch OR give them a story and ask them to write it
Longer form + freedom
Always pay! You have a contract, leverage, etc
Editorial pagination * av word count * word rate = commission
First: 10p/word
Now: 25p/word
Industry average: 30p/word
Interviews / verbatim interviews: with an expert in the subject. Get it without having to pay a word rate, take what you need from it, may tighten it up for free anyway when you send it back for approval
Ask people who just brought out a book
Finding a designer - they expect a very carefully designed product
Don’t be afraid to let things evolve - keep moving/changing things around
First issue is not going to be perfect, important thing is that it exists
Look at magazines / things you like + get in touch with them
Have your favorite designer create a template (or a regular design) for you - easier for recent grads etc to follow, at a cheaper price
Design software: considerable expense
Indesign, photoshop - creative suite, expensive monthly. Worth looking at older versions (old DVDs on ebay - work with designer to save it down a version)
Pagination (80-100), size (delayed gratification is too big/wide to fit through most letterboxes, something smaller / standard sizes are better), GSM (cyclical trends), binding (perfect bound, saddle stitch / staples are much cheaper)
Costs of the last issue, excl. Wages (which has come up a huge amount, 7-8k in the beginning bc lots in house and paying less) : 23.8k pounds
West ale ?? printers company
Approach the printers
The only thing that’s going to push your price up is if its special paper they have to order 4 u
You’ll get inundated with calls once you start up
You want a printer that will work around you (missed deadlines or changes post-proof stage)
6) you need to tell people about your mag
Brainstorm: how are you going to get noticed?
Making waves - Print someone controversial, getting into mainstream press
Power of positivity vs negativity (attract passionately negative people? In emails? Lol. prepare yourself for backlash)
Collaborating with influencers / people with followings / associations that make sense / endorsement (within the niche) - genuine
Loving print means embracing digital - lots of new people come from digital content
Weekly newsletter : manageable amount of content, keep engaging (mailchimp), moving people through the marketing funnel
Events - sense of community, benefit for subscribers.
Free is not recommended. Commitment.
Indie mag community - swap inserts in different titles/issues/newsletters, nicer fit, more interest
Podcasts
Questions
Usually print about 1000 copies of issue 1
Issue 0 - proof of concept (rarely done in indie mags)
Limited run projects - must be pitched to advertisers / subscribers before hand as such (will probz break ur heart at issue 6)

I've noticed that a lot of people here actually have quite a bit of traction with their sites, but they either don't know how to monetize their sites, or they don't know how to grow their sales. My takeaway is that for the most part, a lot of the sites I see are not doing some very easy things to turn their sites into true revenue generators.I wanted to share the things I do on my sites that turned them into seven figure revenue sites (my current I grew to that level in 9 months)It's incredibly hard to get traffic to your site. Once you do, you have to take every opportunity to squeeze the most value out of every visitor to your site upfront, and on an ongoing basis. That's what I'll show you how to do. So without further ado:Capture emailsLet's face it, the vast majority of people will visit your site and leave and likely forget you. Even if they are interested, life gets in the way and they move on without ever buying anything. Your only chance to ever deal with that person again is to get them BACK to your site. So basically you're at square one with that person. They also may just not be ready to buy. That's ok. Think of yourself as a buyer. You probably go to a site and think "hmm, interesting, I'll think about it." Especially if your product is expensive, it may not be a buying decision they'll make right away. The other issue is if you are a content site (like a recipe site). Unless you sell products, you're really not monetizing the visitors. So maybe you'll get some advertising on site, but that's a tough slug to actually make money on.The real money in both scenarios is in capturing the emails of the visitor. Once you have their email address, you now have an ongoing (and free) way to keep talking to that person.Once you have their email you can warm them up with some content about you and your site, send them offers, and depending how sophisticated your email marketing campaign is, over a long period of time, you can keep selling to them over and over.So while maybe a few percent of people will buy something when they come to your site, a bigger percentage will give you their email address. So how do you capture their email? You have to give them something of real value. So an in-depth report (like if your a food site, maybe 50 recipes they'll love), or a really high value coupon.I use Shopify, so I'll use Just Uno to create pop ups that offer them the coupon or free report, and has an area for them to put their email address in. It's really simple to use.Pixel Your SiteThis is critical. We talked about about the fact that some small percentage of people will buy something, some other slightly bigger percentage will give you their email address, but the vast majority of people will just leave your site and do neither of those. All is not lost! For those visitors, we want to be able to retarget them after they've left the site, because they were obviously interested in something, just not ready to commit when they first visited. So by adding a Facebook pixel to your site, you can automatically retarget them with ads that they'll find of interest. These ads are usually very cheap, and you can send them very specific ads based on what they did on site. So for example, if they looked at products, they were pretty interested, so maybe you retarget them with a coupon.Obviously some people who came will never buy, but now between email and pixeling, you have a real shot on goal at converting these people over a longer time horizon. You can use other types of pixels beyond Facebook, and it's the same principle.Use UpsellsThis may be the most powerful tool of all. It may not seem logical, but when someone actually buys from you, they probably would buy a LOT more from you...if you just asked. I am continuously shocked by how well this works. In fact, about 80% of our visitors end up buying an upsell. If I hadn't asked, they would have just bought the original product and kept their money. It's pretty simple, and the big platforms (Shopify, BigCommerce etc) all of this functionality available. All you do is set your site so when someone goes to checkout with a product, you automatically offer them another product at a discount. The kicker? They are most likely to buy more of what they just bought. Like way more likely. So I usually offer them three upsells at a significant discount. This is key because the higher you can get the Average Order Value (AOV), the more money you have to acquire customers. Upsells allow you to significantly increase the AOV of your customers, by increasing the amount they're spending when they checkout. The beauty of it is that usually the first product they've bought pays for the labor and shipping costs involved in fulfilling their order. So it's basically free money to sell them those second, third and fourth products.Sell BundlesThis may sound obvious, but just like upsells, people will often times buy a lot of product if they get a discount or other value. I sell consumable products, with a single product lasting about a month. I will always offer them a single product, a six month supply and a year supply. For the larger bundles, I'll not only give them a discount, but I'll throw in a few free gifts to incentivize them. This works REALLY well, and people will often spend a lot more than they thought they would because they see the value I'm giving them in the bundle as something they just can't pass up.I'll also offer them a collection, where I combine various complimentary products into a single more expensive collection at a slight discount.ContinuityIn addition to growing your AOV, the other key metric I always try to increase is the Life Time Value (LTV) of the customer. Now there are multiple facets to how you can grow LTV, but a really simple one is by offering a continuity program. Basically, you offer people the ability to automatically receive the products you sell on an ongoing basis. For many people, they would gladly have a product they love arrive at their doorstep every month without having to do anything. But if you leave it to them to come back and order every month, they'll often forget about it, or delay the purchase for one of a million reasons. You are providing a convenience to them, and in the process, that single $40 purchase, may actually be worth hundreds of dollars because month after month, you automatically make the sale without having to do anything to get them to buy again. That's amazing. Now the key here is that you can't be scummy about this. I ALWAYS make it very clear that people can buy the product one time, or on a continuing basis, and I make the options extremely easy to understand. Additionally, I make it really easy for people to cancel, no questions asked. In fact I send them an email a few days before their subscription is going to renew, asking them to confirm they would like to continue their subscription.Does this lower my subscription value? Maybe. But that's ok because I don't want to build a business off being deceptive. One other note. A lot of people think that subscriptions only work for consumable products. That's just not true. There are so many examples now of subscription businesses that are not consumable products. It could be a different one of your products every month, it could be a subscription for product that needs to be replaced every six months. Who knows. Point being, a lot of different products can work as a subscription. So those are five of the most important things you can do to wring out a tremendous amount of value out of your site. If you even get basic versions of each of the above in place on your site, I can almost guarantee you you'll see your sales go up.Hope it's helpful!
