Digital Minimalism Journey

I’ve started my digital minimalism journey over a year ago now. I’ve written about wanting to switch to digital planning, as well as how I organise my digital life at university and favourite apps/websites, so I highly recommend you take a look at those posts too. 

I stumbled across a video by Kraig Adams on YouTube, which you can watch HERE and it inspired me to clean up my own files and organise everything. I wanted to simplify my file storage, so that I would have everything in one place, find the best planning system and organise my e-mails. 

E-MAILS

I started by organising my e-mail inboxes and deleting accounts. I used to have 7 active accounts! I know! I don’t know how it happened but with old university inbox, new grad school inbox, two spam e-mail accounts and personal and blog inboxes, I ended up with 7 e-mail accounts. I started with deleting e-mails from my spam accounts, which I used to use for signing up for websites. I made a list of the most important accounts to change the e-mail addresses to and deleted the backlog of all of the e-mails. It’s a mundane task that feels really good to do! I closed my Yahoo e-mail account because they’re known for selling their users e-mail addresses to different companies, so that they could make money, while you receive weird spam e-mails and switched to GMail. Currently, I only have 3 GMail accounts (personal, university and business) and one account for iCloud and spam mails from different websites that I’m registered at. 

I’m making sure that they’re not cluttered with old e-mails that I don’t need. After reading a new e-mail, I think about whether I will need the information to refer back to and if the answer is no, I archive the e-mail. My inbox then works like a to-do list, only keeping the e-mails that I know I will have to look at again. This is a great system for decluttering your inboxes and keeping only the most important information.

DOCUMENTS AND COMPUTER FILES

Besides e-mails, I also organised all of my digital documents and computer files and am now using Google Drive as the primary cloud system. I currently back all of my photos and most important documents on a USB drive; however, I need to invest on an external drive to back up all of my documents. I always have a lot of articles and lecture notes scattered around on my desktop, as I also treat it like a to-do list and once I don’t need it anymore, I delete them to save space and keep my laptop clutter free. Can’t wait to be done with my internship, so that I can clear everything out! 

DIGITAL PLANNING TOOLS

It’s the best way to keep everything in one place, paper free but this could also apply to those of you who would like to have an efficient digital planning system, while still using a paper planner. Personally, I still use both, but I don’t always have the time to fill out my paper planner weekly. 

My to-do lists live on Trello! I love how convenient it is to make to-do lists and categorise items according to importance, as well as mark if they’re complete or not. I always go to Trello first before writing down events/things I need to do in my planner. You can create boards for different areas in your life, for example, I have one for daily tasks, my blog and university. Within those boards you can create to-do lists and I follow a simple layout of having separate lists for “To-Do”, “Doing” and “Done”, as well as “Random” for interesting things to research/or important things that will take longer to complete. Meanwhile, my university board consists of lists according to the courses that I’m currently taking and my thesis research project. 

I also use iCalendar for lectures, assignments/deadlines, work and social events. This is where I plan my time and can see what I am supposed to do/be that day. What I love about iCalendar is that it is synced with my phone/macbook, as well as my Google Calendar and I can easily import calendars if I need to track them. I usually view it in the weekly layout, so that I know what to anticipate that week. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Digital planning tools are extremely efficient and relatively easy to maintain. As I’ve mentioned earlier, although I keep a physical planner, I don’t always have time to write down to-do lists or reflect on my weeks worth of activities. Having this digital planning system is great because I can access it on the go, as well as quickly add items as they come up!

So this is how I’ve been organising my life in a minimal way for the past year. It’s efficient and has been working well for me. I hope there are more digital minimalists out there or maybe this post inspired you to organise your digital files!

I have some bittersweet news. this blog, and related accounts across social media, is being retired.

I want to thank all of you who have been supportive of me, one way or another, over these past several years. some of your names I recognize from having followed me since I first logged to this platform some eight years ago. more of you stuck around after Cipher Hunt, and for you I’m grateful too. to those newer folks who have hardly seen me post since you’ve followed me, I’m sorry. I hope you can see that this decision has been a long time coming.

if you have ever sent me a kind word, or tipped me for my writing, or donated when I needed help: thank you. I won’t be forgetting it. I’ll pay it forward whenever I can.

why are you leaving?

I came to this decision after some months of personal reflection, therapy, diagnosis, and treatment. one strange thing about having a life online is that your first life persists behind it, and your experiences can’t all be shared with the strangers who see only the content you post. unbeknownst to you all, I’ve been doing a lot of maintenance behind the curtain, and it’s helped me recognize—a lot of things, but in the interest of readability: that what’s best for me is leaving this handle, and its collection of accounts, behind; taking an extended break from social media altogether; using the Internet as a tool for learning and for improving my circumstances—instead of a means to assuage boredom, to avoid stress, or to get small hits of dopamine—to the best of my ability when I do return to social media; and putting more focus into accomplishing offline goals. 

it’s sad, and it’ll be hard, but I’m feeling good about it in the sense that I think it will help me move forward in other parts of my life. plus taking a break from social media has always come as a relief for me lately, which I’m taking as a sign that I need to stay away for longer than a little while.

even more recently, I realized that moving on wasn’t an event I had to wait for—the catalyst is my own choice to go.

so I’m going.

where are you going, when you do come back online?

well, I don’t quite know where I’ll end up yet. I have a general idea of how I’d like to use the Internet, when I do use it, from now on, and I’m building a plan around that. but as of right now I don’t have anything concrete in mind.

will I be able to find you?

maybe someday. I think I will start posting my own content online again, eventually. if our interests line up, you might stumble across my work.

what will happen to this place?

for archiving purposes, this blog will stay up a little longer. once that process is complete, I’ll make a decision on what to do with this space.

but before that, posting will slow to a trickle before halting altogether. consider it this way: you’ve heard I’m leaving town, and this here is the last few drinks I’m having at the local dive before setting off in the morning. by all means, drop in and say goodbye. I’ll be collecting well wishes and answering final questions and playing a few more songs before I mosey on out.

yes. for myself, I’ll still be keeping track of what his next projects are. I plan to continue writing about his work for as long as he’s creating—I simply won’t be doing so live-blog style for the foreseeable future. as much as I’ve enjoyed being a news source, the work that makes me feel fulfilled are the few nuanced, reflective, long-form pieces I’ve written over the past few years. that’s the kind of work I aim to make more of in the future, about all kinds of media and art I’m interested in. hence the need for change.

you know, today (August 2nd) is the three year anniversary of the end of Cipher Hunt. on this day in 2016, we were scrambling to decode the final clue after Alex offered his final hint. by the evening, fans were on their way to Reedsport, Oregon for a late evening trek through the woods to find Bill. when I look back on my experience of that day, I remember thinking with clarity: I have never experienced anything comparable to this, and I may never experience anything remotely like this ever again. with each year that has passed since then, and through my own reflection of the event, that thought has only seemed more true.

I don’t know that there will be another event like Cipher Hunt. I’m okay with not knowing that there will be. I’m okay with not being here, with not taking on the same role, if there ever is—I’m okay with just remembering what I experienced.

what are you going to do with all your new free time?

get some new hobbies. go outside more. read. be bored. write more of the kind of content that makes me feel happy and engaged. keep it for myself for a while. go back to school, in some capacity. travel.

Gallery: Delta Green

Most of my RPG illustration work has been for Call of Cthulhu related projects. That’s the result of intention and good luck and accident.

The Intention part happened in the year 2000. I submitted some illustrations to the Delta Green website. Delta Green was a Call of Cthulhu RPG set in modern times – the late 199os. Most CoC games are set in the 1920s/1930s, the time the original stories were written and set. I discovered Delta Green in 1999 when I working at Half Price Books. I was the buyer when a customer sold us his collection of RPG manuals. In the buy was Delta Green and its sequel Delta Green: Countdown. I bought those books for myself. I loved the ideas behind the setting. It updated the Cthulhu Mythos for the late Twentieth Century in ways that surprised and delighted me. It created a means and a reason for investigators to, well, investigate the horrors from beyond.

I’d wanted to illustrate RPGs but didn’t have much of a portfolio of examples to show. I found the Delta Green site early the next year. I don’t think it had a way to send submissions and I don’t think they were asking for any. What it did have was a way to submit fan art and writing. So I worked up three illustrations (see the follow gallery) and submitted them. They got posted. No one from Delta Green contacted me.

Oh well.

Two years later those illustrations got me work at The Black Seal. But that’s another post.

The original photoshop files of these illustrations are, possibly, residing on an old back up drive. It’s formated for Mac and I currently use a PC so I haven’t tried plugging it in. A lot of the work I did in the first ten years of this century was done on a Mac. The art always started as graphite and ink on paper and then had photoshop magic applied to it. I’ve got the original drawings in big metal flat files but the art that got published looks different.

Earlier this year I realized that I’d sent most of those illustrations to the editors and publishers via email and I’ve never deleted any personal emails. So I’ve tracked down a lot of that older art and will be showing it in future galleries. I found the two black and white illustrations in the above gallery in my emails.

The first three images, however, I couldn’t locate in my gmail archive. AOL has long since deleted all my old emals. At first they didn’t appear to be on the current Delta Green site but, after doing some obsessive google searching and some sort of back door poking around on DG I found them in an archive. Huzzah!

Local News

Last week, in one of our stand up meetings at USPS, we were reminded that we, the letter carriers were not supposed to talk to the press. That if a member of the press attempted to engage us in conversation we were to refer him/her to management. Also, while we were in uniform, we were not to engage in political discussions with anyone lest they assume that our views represented those of the USPS. We were also to be careful not to express politcal opinions on social media in such a way as to lead people to believe that our views represented those of the USPS.

Sigh.

To be clear, anything I write here about my job at USPS is just my experience and my opinion. I like to assume that those of you who read these newsletters recognize this but, on the off chance you don’t, I AM NOT A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE POST OFFICE. I’m just a guy who works there. In my opinion, the USPS can’t actually have an opinion since it’s an organization. Organizations are not people. The people in charge of organizations may claim that their opinion represents the opinion of the organization but that’s just a fiction.

Anyway.

The most interesting part about the day job right now is that I have a new T6. USPS delivers mail six days a week. Regular carriers work and deliver theri route five days a week. A T6 is the person who delivers the route on the regular carrier’s day off. My last T6 had medical issues that prevented them from delivering my route on a regular basis. My new T6 is healthy and detail oriented. More detail oriented than I am, actually. And that’s good. It means I’m updating labels in mailboxes and doing maintenance on my route that I’d let slide. I keep most of my customer changes in my head. Having another person who has to regularly work my route reminds me that I should communicate customer changes in clear, written methods. It’s only polite.

We’ve also moved our start time from 7 am to 7:30 am. I’m not a fan but I’m adjusting.

I’ve left my alarm at 4 am. I get up. Drink coffee Write. Do computer art or make products in either my Zazzle or my Redbubble stores. I’ve updated my various websites to include a “store” page with links to each. This week I spent most of my store time working on an Oz Squad collection for Zazzle. Oz Squad is Steve Ahlquist’s creature but, as a fan and sometime collaborator, I try to find ways to keep the brand active.

Missiles and Meal Service: The Hidden Toll of Flying in War-zones

Common occupational hazards in aviation; the not so new flight deck stressors would encompass turbulence, delayed pushbacks, and that one passanger having an issue with someone reclining their seat (this is so very common, believe me). Let’s not forget another one who thinks the seatbelt sign doesn’t apply to them while on active runway (because they are just itching for a snack they left inside their carry-on luggage in the overhead bin. Opens bin, then bag falls off on them and everyone around. SMH)

Back to business. Pilots and cabin crew flying over the Middle East lately, especially in and out of Qatar, well, there’s a new, less subtle source of anxiety: missile attacks. Who doesn’t know the news by now?

Yes, flying into Doha these days might involve dodging airspace closures, U.S. airbase targets, and the occasional Iranian and Israeli news. Glamorous, right?

Very.

While passengers worry about delayed in-flight meals and Wi-Fi speeds being too slow or disconnecting , the crew up front and in the aisles are dealing with something much much heavier: the psychological toll of flying through a region where geopolitics are very unpredictable, stormy, and always just over the horizon.

What Happened in Qatar Exactly, you ask?

In resent years, we’ve witnessed sensitive airspaces and in response, airlines have shut down their airspaces. Flights being rerouted faster than a teenager dodging chores have become commonplace, and airline dispatchers around the world had one collective panic attack.

Now just imagine this. Inflight, flight crew are prepping beverage carts while air defence systems light up the radar. Boom-Chaka-Boom! Just another day in the skies.

Cabin Pressure: Flying with a Side of Adrenaline

Yes, crew (deck crew and cabin crew) are trained to handle demarcates, but war is not an average Emmergency! It’s one thing to worry about fuel efficiency. It’s another to fly over a region where missiles are a real-time hazard.

There is a huge difference between trusting an aircraft, the team, and trusting geopolitics.

Constant anticipatory anxiety.

Hypervigilance, even on layovers.

The unsettling knowledge that their aircraft might share airspace with defense drones, military jets, and… well, more missiles.

Bottom line, pilots and cabin crew are indeed professionals for they train, adapt, and make sure to get the job done. But, they are people too and not robots. People who fly into the world’s most dangerous zones with nothing more than a safety manual and nerves of steel.

We owe them patience, understanding, protection and genuine support as they navigate war zones with grit and grace.

How to Filter your AO3 recs

So you have a favorite author, you ABSOLUTELY love all her Supernatural work, but she also dabbles in... say Eggplant/Peaches slash fiction in a different fandom and you don’t really want to see that (although, personally I do try stuff in ANY fandom of my favorite authors), or you absolutely want to prioritize your ships or comments in your fics but you get fifty AO3 subscription messages in a day and can’t find the ONE Destiel fic that updated today.

You can’t do this in AO3, you have to either receive everything from the author or just single story submissions. BUT, Is there a way for your mail client to help you see only Destiel fics, comments, or even completed fics?

Why yes, yes there is. This tutorial is for GMail users, but we can find a similar function in other mails. I just like the tagging in Gmail better. 

Unfortunately, there is no way to filter completed fics, but you can filter EVERYTHING ELSE. And if you haven’t been using your inbox for that, then let’s show the sample of how filtered mail looks like in your mailbox:

Lets get started! 

First, go to your search bar and access the advanced search functionality:

You put in "do-not-reply@archiveofourown.org" (which is your AO3 bot) in the field that says “from:”  Afterwards you put in your filter. In this example we’re putting in “supernatural” so we can filter all works that have supernatural fandom in it. 

In my case as you see I specifically have it filter everything Destiel so instead of just supernatural what I have in that box is "Castiel/Dean Winchester" For my filter I use quotation marks so that google will search for that phrase EXACTLY no deviations. 

For the word Supernatural, since it's just one word, no need for that quotation mark. But take note that anyone that has "supernatural" in the summary (or even in the descriptions) will automatically be filtered as supernatural it in the tag. You can amend that by filtering it as "Fandom: Supernatural" but if someone says "Fandom: Teen Wolf, Supernatural", you will not get it as an automatic filter. Just bear that in mind. then click "create filter" instead of search

It'll take you to the Filter content. You can have fun here and choose anything you want to do. Archive it automatically, delete it (obviously not for your fics that you want but it works for the reverse. If you hate eggplant/peach ship. You can create your filter for that and autodelete that ship from your inbox so fornicating peaches never grace your sight. But for your particular purpose, what you want is to apply a label. You can actually also star it, never mark it as spam and always label it as important, but that's up to you. Me my basic is I apply a filter on it, cuz it gets priority when I'm sorting what I want in my emails.

So these are my labels and you can even nest it in a particular label . as you can see my labeling is pretty involved. I even have labels for pre-readers and I have labels for particular fics in my inbox. If I have someone who comments in one of my works, I have a label for that and I color it red so I automatically know that someone has commented and I need to reply. So they don't take long waiting for a reply. You can also nest labels. if you look at this it says "fanfic" under fanfic there's Fanfic and then fanfic/atla (atla is under fanfic) and then fanfic/atla/banked-flame (banked flame is under atla, under fanfic.... you get the idea) Congratulations you have created your first filter!

Where can you find these labels? Well automatically Gmail is going to label it from now on, obviously but also on the left hand side you can have these cool labels under the compose buttons: (as you can see my fanfics are still dominated by the destiel department and I haven't weeded it through yet. 497 destiel fics that i haven't downloaded yet whew

You can color labels etc and make them cool and noticeable there. All my fics get a particular label and the fics I write with comments are the only things that get that red shiny label. But obviously have your own conventions :D

Oh one last thing. You can also edit your labels in the settings.  The settings is also where you can double check your filters or delete a filter you don’t like.

That's it if you have questions don't hesitate to ask. But I think that covers everything.

Why is there no way to filter completed fics then? Unfortunately, the email doesn't say your fic is complete, the only thing it says is 11/11 or 11/? the /? can't be used because ? is a Boolean query 

(so if you use it to search say.... m?an it'll give results replacing the ? with any other letter in the alphabet: mean, moan.... etc)

Therefore, it cannot be used to filter as A QUESTION MARK. Until AO3 has somewhere in their email that says "this work is complete" or a converse of that, there will be no way to say that your fic is complete without you physically opening the e-mail. I've tried it a hundred times and did a google search on how to search for a question mark. No dice. Unless someone where knows? Then ping me, I'm totally interested. Every month we’ll post up to 5 prompts. You can pick one (or more) prompts, and run with it.

You may submit a stand-alone drabble or a scene.

 What do we mean by a scene? A scene is a division of a novel, representing a single episode. It can have both beginning and ending, or none of those.

What is a drabble? A drabble is a short piece of fiction that generally stands alone and isn’t part of a larger story.

Submissions must be over 100 words, and under 1000 words.

Can I submit a new part of a story I’m writing? Yes, as long as all our other rules apply. We’ll require a link to the original story within the work. Keep in mind that our anonymity rule won’t apply to you if you do this. :)

New Way To Know I Forgot My Gmail Password Online

Most of my fics tend to be pretty self-indulgent. Most of my writing, in general, is self-indulgent, written because it’s something I want to see/read unless it’s a prompt but even those tend to skew how I want them to go. As far as fic indulging whatever whim I hit upon, “Clay” probably takes top prize there. I just keep thinking of more things I think would be cool to see in it and stacking those onto what’s already there, which is likely going to make it a monolithic mess, but I’m enjoying it.

It depends. I almost always need music but not music that’s going to distract me. Music that matches what I’m writing about. This tends to be why I listen to the same playlist constantly. If I’m adding music to a playlist in big chunks, I am not writing, I am song archiving. 

I also need to not be able to get onto the internet and distract myself. I can get kind of bad about that when I’m at the desktop, checking Tumblr and my Gmail and loads of other things instead of writing. This is why a lot of my current writing gets done on my hacked Fire because it doesn’t really surf well. It especially doesn’t surf well when it’s connected to the Bluetooth keyboard so it’s an easy way to keep myself focused. If I use the desktop, I’ll let the StayFocused app “turn off” access to certain things for a set amount of time. 

I usually need at least one cup of coffee before doing anything. I can’t write after work because my brain is too tired. I typically don’t write on off days/weekends currently because there are hundreds of other things (cleaning, cooking, errands, crochet) that need to get done and my trade-off for writing before work every morning is that I do not guilt myself about not writing on the weekends. I will write on the weekends if inspiration hits, but I’ve been less on the inspiration writing train and more on the keep going writing train lately. (Winters are hard for me between inevitable holiday disappointments and seasonal depression stuff and sometimes I just have to make myself go like the little engine that could.)

I don’t even know that I can answer this one. I have been writing fanfic in various ways since as long as I can remember. Honestly, when I was going through my dad’s things to see what I wanted versus what could be sold/thrown away, I came across a large collection of notebooks from elementary school that were obviously some sort of Nightmare on Elm Street/Baby-Sitter’s Club mash-up fanfic, and I literally do not know how I wasn’t sent to a counselor for that except that the teachers were probably like, “Sara wrote twenty more pages of that weird shit, and I literally do not have time for this.” idk

We got the internet at home when I was in Middle School. I used to print fanfic out on my dox matrix printer to read because I couldn’t tie the phone line up long enough to read it over dial-up. I was making fanfic websites on free sites for ages, but I know it started in high school. I’m just not exactly sure when. 

My first fanfic was likely X-Men related. Or X-Files. Or Star Trek Voyager. But X-Men, especially New Mutants, is the most likely because I joined an email mailing list for X-Men related fanfic almost first thing when I was on the internet. And it was likely posted in at least 1996, though it’s possible it could have been earlier. I don’t have all the emails anymore, but know that I am a fandom old and that almost all of that super embarrassing writing from when I was very young is online and it’s terrible.

A lot of the angst I write tends to be about loss. Loss of people, loss of love, loss of core things that one builds the self on. Also, miscommunication. But, intrinsically, I think the hinge point I use for angst is being alone and being misunderstood, sometimes not even understanding one’s self in the loneliness. Dwell on all the things and all the people and all the experiences that your character is lacking. Find the ways in which they fail, in which they are not enough, explore those. Locate the cracks, make them bigger, make them overarching and overwhelming.

And then. Heal them. Or show the ways in which they splinter when trying to heal.

I’ll be honest, what I wrote when I was younger contains a lot more angst and anger and depression than what I write now. There’s certainly more violence for one thing. I know I’ve got the angst queen title, but it’s not. It’s not purposeful. I typically don’t set out to do it. Things just get sad on me, and I blame Marvel for that because the X-Men were constantly having everything fall apart on them at every single turn.
