“What is that?”

Fuck, I forgot she likes to peek over shoulders.

“Nothing.” I say it entirely too quickly. “It’s nothing.”

“Uh-huh, and I’m famous. What is it?” As if she doesn’t know.

“None of your business.” I try to hide my arm.

“Oh really? I think my best friend getting a mark is definitely my business.” Sarah leans over me to try to grab my arm.

“Stop.” I try to pull away. “I swear it’s nothing. I just drew on my arm.”

“Then why are you trying to hide it?” Sarah teases.

“Because you’re making a big deal out of nothing.” I reply as calmly as possible.

“Come on, you know it’s an honor to have any mark. Even if it’s a minor god’s. Show me.” She finally gives up on forcing my arm into a position where she could see the mark and sits next to me. “Fine, spoil-sport. Have you told anyone about it?”

“No, who would I tell?” I answer, going back to the essay I was working on.

“Me, for one.” Sarah replies pointedly.

“Other than you.” I roll my eyes.

“Fair point.” she concedes. “So, watcha doin’?

“Writing an essay.”

“On what?”

“The cultural impact of memes.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah.”

“What’s it for?”

“College admissions.”

“I wish you luck.”

“Thanks.”

I continue working in silence as Sarah dicks around on her phone next to me.

After about an hour I’ve finished the first draft of the essay and I close my laptop after saving it.

“Want me to peer edit?” Sarah offers as I sit back in my chair.

“You won’t turn it into some big joke, right?” I reply cautiously.

“Course not. This is college. That’s something big. I wouldn’t mess that up for you.” She answers seriously.

“Thanks.” I sigh.

“So . . . can I see the mark?” Sarah speaks quickly.

“No.” I say.

“Come on! I’m curious. You know how I get when I’m curious.” She implores me.

“I don’t want to show it.”

“Why not?”

“It’s embarrassing.”

“Why?”

I put my face in my palms and try not to scream.

“I won’t laugh, promise.” Sarah sounds sincere. “Please, Karson.”

“Fine.” I sigh with my eyes closed.

It takes a bit of courage to drag up my hoodie sleeve and bare my arm for her to see.

“Oh . . .” She barely breathes the sound.

I look at her and I see something I’ve never seen, complete, utter shock and not a sign of her impish grin.

“Sarah?”

“That’s . . . Oh.”

“Sarah, why are you staring like that?”

“That’s mine.”

“What? You’re human.”

“I’m not.”

She stares directly into my eyes and I see it’s the truth.

“You’re . . . not human.”

“I’m sorry.”

Then she’s gone.
