Caves Way

August is our month of themes this year. With no summer rec or swim, we’ve made it this far with random crafts and swimming at our friends’ houses but it never hurts to throw some in some good ol’ education. 

We devoted the first week of the month to Caves. We did some worksheets researching stalagmites and stalactites. What on EARTH are you talking about, Al? Well, stalagmites and stalactites are found in caves. When water drips from the ceiling of a cave, droplets contain calcium deposits that drip down forming stone icicles, if you will. Stalagmites are from those same drips off of the stalactites dropping to the ground and creating a cone from the ground up. My personal way of remembering which is which is “stalactite” has a letter “c” like the word “icicle.” Super creative, I know. 

The kids had fun using a dictionary to look up what the words mean and research a bit more about them. We then looked to science experiments to further our studies. We created our own stalagmites and stalactites using water, food coloring and baking soda! Carson and Bianca shared that they’ll be going to Howe Caverns soon and I couldn’t be more psyched for them to implement what we’ve learned into some serious visuals when they’re there. My family and I went there several times while I was growing up. It is very much so a “journey to the center of the earth” feeling and I highly recommend to those in NY who have not been.

Needed:

2 similar sized jars, 1 larger jar, water, baking soda, food coloring, yarn and 2 paper clips. 

To do: 

Fold and twist your 3 ft bit of yarn and attach a paper clip on both ends, as shown.

Place hot water in the large jar.

Add baking soda until it stops dissolving easily. We were pretty generous.

Place yarn across the 2 jars, as shown. (you may want to place a dish between for anything that drips. 

Pour the mixture in the large jar evenly in the 2 smaller jars. You may also dip the yarn in the mixture to speed up the process.

Next is patience. This takes roughly 2-3 days to begin showing results.

We closed our week with a cute cave frame craft and, completely unrelated, enjoying some dry ice fun!

Last summer we went to Howe Caverns to explore the caves to get a good feeling of what they were really like. We started with the normal tour before getting to the signature rock tour section where we were given equipment to crawl and explore through the undeveloped sections of the cave.

All of our pictures except the group shot was in the normal tour area, where we had walkways and good lighting allowing us to get a good idea on different formations and sizes of the caves and tunnels. While the tour area was well lit and dry, the deeper section was the opposite, preventing us from bringing our phones. There was so much moisture in the air everything sparkled when our headlamps went over anything. We got to crawl through tight passages, puddles, and rocks to make it to a large room where once we turned out headlamps off was complete darkness where we stayed for a while before crawling our way out.

It was a fun experience and our adventure through the cave gave us lots of ideas on how to style our caves and interesting formations to try and include. As we get further we want to capture the atmosphere and feelings of darkness down there and how wet the air can become.
