One of the few things I truly love about loading the kiln in cold weather (it’s in the garage) is that it gives me incentive to make big bowls of ramen, chock full of mushrooms, winter squash, and eggs (all local). Austin and I always do a bit of meal prep on Sundays to ready ourselves for the week ahead (I've linked 👆🏻 an old post explaining our meal planning process, if you're curious). Yesterday, we braised a pork shoulder for food52/ dinneralovestory's genius ragu, an endlessly adaptable base recipe scented with red wine and aromatic fennel seed. Tonight served as sugo for orecchiette, with pecorino and lemony fennel slaw, but also amazing as carnitas, heaped on sandwiches, to top polenta... with plenty left to freeze for later. loveykitchen

Well, we have no heat or hot water, so we spent the day doing yard work and then fired up the grill. Might as well stay outside since it’s just as cold in the house! I cannot sing the praises of this grill smoked salmon enough. Our Alaskan fish share included both sockeye and coho, so I sprinkled the coho with sesame seeds so we could tell the difference. Some korean potato salad, steamed broc, eggs, cukes, and the last of my sister’s avocado rounded out our meal. On any given night if I’m busy or remotely unmotivated (don’t mock me!), my go to is gonna be a sheet pan supper. Here chicken thighs marinated in garlic, chilis, and cilantro with salt and olive oil with yukon golds and carrots. Tossed some broccoli on a second sheet to roast on the lower rack and crumbled greek feta on top. I held some of the herb garlic mixture back to mix with mayo, sour cream, and lime juice for a quick sauce. Swedish Meatballs. This is a wonderful recipe. These are done with pork. As for the sides, let’s just say my heros, our local farmers, have indulged my love of purple veggies. I mean, seriously, these purple potatoes! Simply steamed, they were an ideal bed for the meatballs! Inspired by the farm market bounty and Lan Lam’s smart new recipe in this month’s @cooksillustrated , I decided to roast some squash. I’m a huge fan of delicata, but was more in the mood for the denser-fleshed kobocha. Curious how many of you are familiar. I use my bench scraper and a rubber mallet to open the squash, then an ice cream scoop to clean the cavity. A chef’s knife makes quick work of slicing. Working on a parchment lined sheet pan, a quick drizzle of olive oil, salt, pepper, and cane sugar highlights the natural sweet nuttiness of this lovely fruit. Roast at 375° until tender and golden, about 40 minutes. This is a perfect accompaniment to fish, poultry, or pork. Turkey thighs are a perennial fave in our family. Here, I slow roasted them for 4 hours on a bed of onions, cabbage, carrots, hot peppers, and ripest tomatoes. Bit of white wine. Pulled the meat, then threw half of everything into the pasta pot with al dente rigatoni, some of the pasta water, and a good hit of grated parm. Arugula salad. I was too busy to get a pic of the post apple picking dinner for 24 of hubs’ family. But I managed one when serving leftovers next day. Simple pan roast of chicken thighs, Italian sausage, peppers, onions, potatoes, and white wine; roasted local broccoli, cauliflower, parsnips, and carrots; bean salad; orecchiette, freshly picked heirloom toms.
