Howlingwind is an old Celestial, only really known for her one moment of glory. Despite that, it's still a good story.

The Tale of Howlingwind

Many moons ago, the molly we know now as Howlingwind went by the name Eggcough. She was a WheatClan caretaker in the early days of gardening and agriculture. She was known to prefer the company of the shifting wheat to other cats, and that suited her well.

One day, a blizzard blew across the Clans. It was early for snow; far too early. WheatClan was left unprepared. They did not know how to ready their fields for the cold months and believed, as they huddled for shelter in camp, that all their hard work would be blown away, buried under thick snow.

When the camp emerged later that day to a white world, they realized one of their ranks was not in the warrior's den. They feared Eggcough had been trapped in the snow and prayed that she found a safe place to wait it out.

The leader organized patrols to find the missing caretaker. One of these patrols was sent out to the fledging wheat fields. They were shocked at what they found. Rather than the land being submerged in snow, Eggcough stood by a fire in the heart of a merely snow-dusted field. She had stayed in the field to prepare it for the cold. She showed off irrigation systems around the area that historians had only hypothesized. By building a few fires along the empty field, she encouraged snowmelt and sent it away from the land. It would be ready for any future storms to strike the Clans.

WheatClan was impressed by Eggcough's ingenuity and determination to ensure the new wheat farming project would go as planned. As such, she earned the honor title of Howlingwind. Now, when snow blows in and threatens to suffocate the land, we pray to Howlingwind for a bit of her cleverness.

HowlingWind = Bansha x Morro

Named as such because of Bansha’s ability to unleash sonic screams with her voice, akin to howling. Morro is the Master of Wind, and the phrase itself already exists (howling wind). The wind howls, Morro is the wind and Bansha is that sound.

The translation of the title of Wuthering Heights to romance languages is so interesting to me.

Spanish, Italian and Portuguese pick defined topographic words for the indefinite English "heights": Spanish uses cumbres, which makes one think of high mountains and a certain notion of perfection and elegance. Italian uses cime, which is a sister word to the Spanish cimas, which keeps the same mountain connotations, but with a flavor of angularity, sharpness. Portuguese in turn picks morro, which refers to a short elevation of terrain, sometimes with a connotation of stone.

French, in turn, picks the generic hauts, that more accurately translates heights. It's not that, at least in Spanish, there's not a word for it, in fact, altos is a word commonly used to designate geographical places.

So, what about the wuthering part of the title? Spanish uses borrasca, which refers to a type of violent sea-storm, with rain, wind, and lightning. The full title, Cumbres Borrascosas makes a juxtaposition of the peaks of high mountains with a stormy sea. Very effective titling, but I'd say misleading in a way.

Italian uses tempèsta, which as far as I know is very similar to the Spanish borrasca, but its main connotation is that of a violent wind, often without rain or lightning.

Portuguese uses ventos uivantes, that is, of winds that scream like wolves or dogs, with a painful connotation. The full title is highlighting a sense of isolation, a vantage point, and pain, a haunting.

French chooses to make a compose word, Hurlevent, from hurle and vent, which is very similar, practically the same to the meaning on the Portuguese one.

So, basically and as far as my understanding of these languages goes, they would translate back into English approximately as:

Spanish: Cumbres Borrascosas - Tempestuous Summits

Italian: Cime Tempestose - Wuthering Peaks

Portuguese: O Morro Dos Ventos Uivantes - The Hill of the Howling Winds.

French: Les Hautes of Hurlevent - The Heights of Howlingwind.

*I'm of course always open and eager to hear from the native speakers of these languages (I'm a native Spanish speaker).

Rory strummed on her guitar, singing an acoustic mash up of Blank Space and Style by Taylor Swift. She didn’t do this often anymore. When she’s first got to New York, she would go to Times Square and perform all the time, but it was always more about handing out the photography cards Syria had helped her make than the music. She wasn’t a stellar musician, but playing popular music seemed to get the attention of New Yorkers about as well as anything else. But then Devone interfered, and she was so traumatized and academically behind that she’d simply forgotten.

Now, she sat on the polluted sidewalk, cross legged and shoeless, hair tied up in a messy bun and a stack of business cards by her side. It felt a little like returning to her roots, and if she made a little money? That was good too. She really needed to buy a decent ring. The ring pop, cute as it was, wasn’t cutting it anymore.

“Hey there!” She called out, pausing her singing but continuing to strum. A beautiful young woman was passing by, and Rory could only hope that she was a student or actor in need of some photos. “You look exceptionally photogenic,” she declared. “Any chance you need a photographer? College graduation is right around the corner...”
