Global Studies Capstone April 23- HPI Design Thinking Workshop

After a few hours of the most fun process of brainstorming I’ve participated in, we reviewed the lessons we’d learned and their applicability. It turns out, we learned about listening through the 80-20 interview rule, creativity, and failure. We also had been focusing on a topic very close to our global hearts as we begin to embark on an adventure outside of our global bubble and find where we belong in the process of addressing global issues. I left the session with my mind feeling stimulated and refreshed.

It was during our processing meeting the following week that my understanding of our experience began to shift. We began to question the inclusivity of the process, pointing out its euro-centric roots and applications and its tendency to be implemented in contexts of wealth. We also began to question the value of commodifying creativity as they had done. In a sense, design thinking created a formula to be creative efficiently and quickly in order to remain productive in a corporate environment. We also addressed the fact that the space in which we met was located in Hudson Yards, an area known for being drastically gentrified and newly geared toward wealthy tourists. In all, I think design thinking as an objective concept is valuable, but we can’t ignore the context in which it was developed or is currently implemented. How can we incorporate multi-cultural ideas and make it more accessible and accommodating?

TINSEL MAN Charya, a Cambodian lady says that she actually encountered a Pchum Ben Ghost in which she calls Tinsel Man. Charya encountered the ghost in 1994 on the Pchum Ben holiday. She describes it as having a pinhole mouth and wearing an outfit that seemed to be made up of tinsel. Tinsel Man followed her around and then finally vanished. Two years later, Charya encounters Tinsel Man again, but this time at her home. Tinsel Man was sitting on her recliner chair. With 2 million people dying in the Killing Fields from starvation, exhaustion, torture and murder, Cambodia must be one of the most haunted places in the world.

Buying a used car can be a daunting experience, especially for a woman. Despite the battle for equality, which has been largely successful, we still experience occasional bouts of sexism when out shopping for a car.

Assumptions are often made that we don’t really know what we’re talking about and are easy to walk over. So we need to do our homework in advance and know exactly what we want so that the only thing taken for a ride is our lovely new car!

With so many places selling cars it can be overwhelming, but if you allow yourself the time and take it ‘step by step’ you can make things a lot easier.

Where to buy?

The first thing you need to decide is whether to buy from a dealer or a private seller. Whilst the lower price of the private sale might look attractive, if things go wrong with the car afterwards you will have no legal comeback at all. Whereas, professional used car dealers, like Purser and Luxford, offer you security in case something unforeseen goes wrong with your new car after your purchase. Another reassuring factor is that the majority of used car dealers will have thoroughly checked and prepared the car for sale and charge you a fair price based on its condition.

Unless there is a specific car you want, buying privately can be a waste of time.  I’ve spent days looking for a specific car in the past, where if I’d contacted a Certified Used Car Dealer they’d probably have had most cars and car types in stock. If you tell the salesperson what you’re looking for, chances are they’ll be able to help you find it.

Doing your homework

It’s very important to know exactly what you need from your new car before you go looking.  Perhaps you have a large family, so you need a lot of space? If it’s your first car you’ll need to consider tax and the ever rising cost of insurance.  If you know exactly what you need, you won’t get side-tracked by any sales patter that might be used to sell you a car that isn’t right for you.  Do you want an automatic or a manual?  How many doors and seats do you want? Check the car is as good as it looks

An HPI check on the vehicle, which can be done online, will confirm that all is above board. Most reputable dealers will have already done this, so ask to see a copy of it before committing to anything. Have a good check round the car, inside and out, to make sure it is as described. Try out the radio and any on board technology. Take a lengthy test drive and ensure you feel comfortable in it. Take a friend along for moral support. Never be afraid to take your time and ask as many questions about the car as you like, even ones you think might sound a bit silly. It is better to be thorough and ask too many questions than getting the car home and realising that you should have asked something at the time.

Finally, you’ll get a feel for the dealership and the people who work there when you visit.  Do you feel comfortable there?  Do you feel you can trust them? Do you feel special and valued? I would like to know what health insurance company is my primary. I had health insurance through my previous employer. I know this is long but please bear with me. Rather than set up a separate government run medical insurance or expansion of medicare to the general public....One criticism of government care is that it will be in direct competition with existing providers. Ultimately siphoning insurance customers away from traditional plans and onto the rolls of govt care causing these providers to go out of business. Here in my state the auto insurance companies MUST offer the same basic minimum coverage in order to do business in the state. Everyone here must have at least the same basic level of insurance (both auto and medical) . You can go to any provider you choose and this basic minimum insurance level costs the same . If you want more insurance you can pay for additional coverage. But that basic plan is available to all. So why not have a similar program for medical insurance as part of a nation wide group policy. This group can be subsidized by the government but it would be managed by the existing insurance providers. (In other words if you want to be in the insurance business you must offer and support this minimum plan which would be a foundation for any other plan you offer) The govt pays the insurance company a flat rate to manage each person enrolled in the basic plan. The more money the company saves (the better they manage the insurance) the more money they keep. However if that company provides poor management it will cost them. Either subscribers will change management companies if they feel they are getting a raw deal or wasteful management would not be payed for by the government. One advantage I see here is that consumers would have an alternative providers to go to if they feel wronged by a particular management company. Insurance providers also have an incentive to offer additional services to the basic plan members in order to attract more subscribers and earn money. With a govt program like medicare your stuck with the one provider (the governement). As they say One Choice is NO Choice.... If someone wants additional insurance they can buy additional coverage from any provider they choose. But No one could be denied coverage for the standardized basic plan. Since everyone is part of this national group policy the basic insurance is portable and independent of supplemental policy one may have. So if you change jobs or move to a different state you may loose the supplemental policy BUT your basic coverage remains intact. You merely transfer the company that provides the management services for the basic medical. Insurance providers would get paid by the fed to manage the participants in the basic plan for each participant in the basic plan. this would put market forces into play for the insurance providers to make money by attracting additional participants through better service or offerings. COunter to this is if the consumer gets crappy management services they can transfer to any other insurance provider.

Easiest is Daphné. She’s intent on doing things & doing them well; also, she’s the most likely to have a taste for horror. Conclusion: scary vampire.

She’d absolutely be the kind of person to commit to a full greyscale bodypaint in order to look straight out of an old movie, alas she’d be too short on time between her shift and the party. She wears the fangs all day, though.

Gilles… Well, he wears a lot of plaid shirts. Cowboy, maybe??

As for Morgane—there are entirely too many options!! She probably has a bunch of outfits already lined up, anyway, since there’s no way she would pass up an opportunity to go all out. She could definitely be a witch (she already owns a pointy hat), but I could see her rocking a superhero costume… Wonder Woman?
