What is the HSG Test for Infertility – Imprimis IVF
Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a diagnostic imaging test used to evaluate the status of the uterus and fallopian tubes in women, particularly in cases of infertility. The procedure involves the injection of a contrast dye into the uterine cavity through the cervix, followed by X-ray imaging to capture the flow of the dye as it outlines the shape and structure of the uterus and fallopian tubes.

Radiating Clarity: The HSG Test and Female Fertility Evaluation
Trying to get pregnant but it's just not happening? You're not alone. About 10-15% of couples face infertility issues. As a woman, getting a full fertility workup is important to figure out what's going on. One test that can provide major clues is called a hysterosalpingogram, or HSG for short.
What is an HSG test?
An HSG test uses x-rays and contrast dye to look at the inside of your uterus and fallopian tubes. It lets your doctor see if there are any problems that could be causing infertility.
How does it work?
First, a speculum (the duck bill thingy used during a pap smear) is gently inserted into your vagina. This helps open up the vagina so the doctor can see your cervix. Your cervix is then cleaned off.
Next, a thin tube called a catheter is threaded through the opening in your cervix and into your uterus. A syringe is used to pump liquid contrast dye through the catheter and into your uterus. As the dye spreads, special x-ray images are taken.
As the dye flows through your uterus, it shows the shape of the inside of your uterus. Then it spills into your fallopian tubes, which are the tubes connecting your ovaries to your uterus. The dye outlines your tubes on x-ray so the doctor can see if they are open and normal.
What will I feel during the HSG test?
You may feel some minor cramping when the dye is injected, like short-lived menstrual cramps. Some women may also have light spotting for a day or two afterwards. Your doctor may suggest taking a mild pain reliever an hour before the test to help with any cramps.
Many women report the procedure just feels like strong period cramps and is over pretty quickly. The speculum part feels just like when you get a pap smear. The whole appointment is usually less than 30 minutes.
Why is an HSG test useful?
The HSG test gives your doctor a movie-like view of what’s happening inside your reproductive tract. It allows them to check for any issues that could be causing problems getting pregnant. Here are some key things the HSG test can reveal:
Uterine abnormalities - The dye will outline any irregularities in the shape of your uterus, like fibroids or polyps.
Fallopian tube blockages - Blocked tubes are one of the most common causes of female infertility. The HSG test can show if one or both tubes are blocked.
Structural problems - An HSG may uncover other issues like scar tissue or abnormal openings.
Screening after procedures - An HSG is sometimes done after procedures like tubal reversal surgery to make sure tubes are open.
What happens after the HSG test?
The doctor will review the results of the HSG images and discuss next steps with you. If the test came back normal, you can be reassured that your fallopian tubes are open. If abnormalities are seen, your physician may recommend treatment options based on the specific issues found.
In some cases, an HSG may show a tubal blockage, but it turns out to be temporary spasm. Your doctor may want to repeat the test later after giving the tubes time to relax.
While identifying structural problems is helpful, the HSG isn’t perfect. Sometimes tubes can appear open but still have underlying functional issues. Other fertility tests may be needed to get the full picture. But overall, an HSG provides very useful information to aid the fertility evaluation process.
When is an HSG recommended?
HSG testing is often part of a basic fertility workup. It may be suggested if:
You’ve been trying to conceive unsuccessfully for 6 months or more
You have a history of pelvic inflammatory disease
You’ve had recurrent miscarriages
You’re planning to start fertility treatments like IVF
You’ve had tubal ligation reversal surgery
Takeaway on HSG testing
In the quest towards parenthood, getting a clear picture of what’s happening in your reproductive system is empowering. The HSG test offers an inside look at the landscape of your fertility. While not giving all the answers, it provides important clues to guide next steps. For many couples, it represents a pivotal moment of hope on the path forward.

HSG Test for IVF | Prime IVF
Tumblr media
The Hysterosalpingography (HSG) test is a crucial diagnostic procedure often used in the evaluation of infertility, particularly for those undergoing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatments. It helps assess the condition of the uterus and fallopian tubes to ensure they are functioning properly, which is essential for successful conception.
HSG Test:
Purpose: The HSG test for IVF primarily checks for blockages in the fallopian tubes and evaluates the shape and structure of the uterus. This is vital in IVF treatment as blocked tubes can prevent sperm from reaching the egg or hinder the embryo's ability to implant in the uterus.
Procedure: During the test, a contrast dye is injected into the uterus through the cervix. X-ray images are then taken to observe the flow of the dye through the uterus and fallopian tubes. If the tubes are open, the dye will spill out into the abdominal cavity, indicating that the tubes are not blocked.
Preparation: Patients are often advised to schedule the test after their menstrual period but before ovulation to avoid the possibility of being pregnant. Mild pain relief medication might be recommended before the procedure.
Experience: Some women experience mild to moderate cramping similar to menstrual cramps during the test, and it's common to have some spotting afterward.
Importance in IVF: For IVF, knowing the condition of the fallopian tubes and uterus is crucial. If blockages or abnormalities are detected, they can be addressed before proceeding with IVF to improve the chances of success.
Prime IVF:
If you're considering IVF at a specific clinic, such as Prime IVF, the clinic might provide HSG tests as part of their fertility assessment services. Prime IVF clinics typically offer comprehensive fertility treatments, including diagnostic tests like HSG, to tailor the IVF process to the individual needs of each patient. It's advisable to contact the clinic directly for details about their specific procedures, pricing, and any preparation steps you might need to take.

(HSG test in hindi)
Tumblr media
What is HSG test?
Why is HSG test done?
How is HSG test done?
HSG test procedure
Pain during HSG test
Benefits of HSG test
What to expect after HSG test?
Risks of HSG test
HSG test results
Possibility of pregnancy through HSG test
HSG test options

The HSG test, also known as Hysterosalpingography, is a medical diagnostic procedure used to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes in women. It is primarily performed to evaluate the female reproductive system and identify potential issues that may affect fertility or cause other gynecological problems.
During the HSG test, a contrast material (dye) is injected into the uterus through the cervix. The dye flows through the uterus and into the fallopian tubes, allowing the radiologist or gynecologist to visualize the structures using X-ray or fluoroscopy. This procedure helps in detecting any abnormalities such as blockages, polyps, fibroids, or other structural issues that could interfere with fertility or lead to problems like recurrent miscarriages or pelvic pain.
The HSG test is usually performed in an outpatient setting and takes about 15 to 30 minutes to complete. It may cause mild discomfort or cramping during the injection of the dye, but the majority of women tolerate the procedure well. After the test, the patient may experience some spotting or light bleeding, but this typically subsides within a day or two.
Overall, the HSG test is an important diagnostic tool in reproductive medicine, aiding in the evaluation and diagnosis of conditions affecting the female reproductive system. It provides valuable information for fertility specialists and gynecologists to plan appropriate treatment options based on the identified issues. Well friends, it’s Yom Kippur and I’m not fasting.
In an hour I’m going to the fertility clinic for a thing called an HSG - feel free to look it up, I don’t feel like explaining here. Because there’s a slight risk of infection, my doctor prescribed me antibiotics. In a few minutes, I’ve been instructed to take painkillers. Both of these require food.
I probably wasn’t going to fast anyway, though; I have a complicated relationship with food and fasting, a history of disordered eating I hid and denied for a long time. I never had an eating disorder, but when I was deeply evangelical I would fast often. “Fast.” An excuse to not eat and punish myself under the guise of worship and prayer.
That was a lot of my life as a Christian. Punishment, self loathing, denial. In the name of god.
Today is Yom Kippur and I attended service virtually, I sat alone in a room wearing my tallit and kippah. One of my dogs came and sat at my feet, looking imploringly at me for pets. I tried to focus on the service and not the fertility appointment waiting for me. I’m not fasting, and there’s guilt. I’m not at service in person, there’s guilt.
But my rabbi reminded us to sit if we need to during service, to drink water or eat food if we need to. We’re not supposed to harm ourselves.
I’m good at harming myself, though, and calling it something else.
In one of the prayers we said today, we apologized for being defeatist, for “the comfortable ache of despair.”
I’m good at that, too. Defeatism and despair. Especially on this fertility journey. It’s easy - almost comfortable - to fall into the self loathing, into blaming my body and my past choices, to assume that I’m being punished. That I won’t have children. It hasn’t been a year yet; we’ve tried no interventions yet. It’s far too soon to give up hope.
The readings for Rosh Hashana - just last week - are about Sarah, who was barren, and Hannah, who was barren. These women who were advanced in years and childless. How god heard them and blessed them. They’re not the only ones, either; Rebekah and Rachel struggled, too. Infertility is a theme here, and god heard those prayers. That struck me, has stayed with me. It’s been on my mind for the past month, these stories, those prayers.
So, it’s Yom Kippur and I’ve failed 11 times to get pregnant, and every time I’ve blamed myself and fallen into despair, even if only temporarily. But today? I’m going to the clinic, and they’ll do a test. We’re collecting data, examining all we can, searching for a solution. We don’t have a clear picture yet, my doctor said. After today it will be clearer. And in a few weeks, we’ll meet again and discuss more.
I’m trying to be less mean to myself, to be less defeatist and despairing. I’m learning how to pray again. I’m trying.
And maybe that’s not nothing.

How to Prepare for a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Procedure
Introduction: A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes. It involves injecting a contrast dye into the reproductive organs and then taking X-ray images to evaluate their structure and function. If you're scheduled for an HSG procedure, it's essential to be well-prepared to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the necessary steps to prepare for an HSG procedure effectively.
Understand the Procedure: Before your HSG procedure, take the time to understand the purpose, process, and potential benefits or risks associated with it. Speak to your healthcare provider and ask any questions you may have. Knowing what to expect can alleviate anxiety and help you feel more prepared.
Schedule the Procedure: Work with your healthcare provider to schedule the HSG procedure at the appropriate time during your menstrual cycle. It's typically recommended to undergo the test between days 6 and 10 of your cycle, counting the first day of your period as day one. This timing ensures that you're not pregnant and minimizes the risk of interfering with an existing pregnancy.
Medication and Allergies: Inform your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or supplements you're currently taking. Certain medications, such as blood thinners, may need to be adjusted or temporarily discontinued before the procedure. Additionally, if you have any known allergies, particularly to iodine or contrast dye, make sure to mention them to your healthcare provider.
Pre-Procedural Instructions: Your doctor or clinic will provide specific pre-procedural instructions. Follow them carefully to ensure accurate results and minimize complications. These instructions may include:a. Dietary Restrictions: You may be advised to avoid eating or drinking for a specific period before the procedure.b. Bowel Preparation: You might need to take a laxative or enema to clear your bowels before the procedure.c. Empty Bladder: Empty your bladder before the procedure, as a full bladder can make the examination more uncomfortable.d. Pain Relief: If you experience discomfort during the procedure, ask your doctor about taking over-the-counter pain relievers before the test.e. Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on the day of the procedure. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown before the test.
Arrange Transportation: Arrange for someone to accompany you to and from the clinic or hospital where the HSG procedure will be performed. Some women experience cramping or dizziness after the test, and having someone there to assist you will ensure your safety and peace of mind.
Emotional Support: Undergoing medical procedures can be emotionally challenging. Seek emotional support from your partner, family, or friends during this time. Sharing your concerns and fears can provide comfort and help alleviate any anxiety you may be feeling.
Conclusion: Preparing for an HSG procedure involves understanding the process, following pre-procedural instructions, and seeking emotional support. By being well-informed and taking the necessary steps, you can optimize your experience and increase the chances of obtaining accurate results. Remember to communicate openly with your healthcare provider, ask questions, and address any concerns you may have. The HSG procedure plays an important role in diagnosing potential fertility issues, and by preparing adequately, you're taking a proactive step towards your reproductive health.

Still no AF and still no positive test. I’m now convinced I didn’t get a high enough peak to ovulate. I have provera to bring on AF so I can get the HSG done, but I’m going to have to plan it correctly. Hubby and I have a vacation in 2 weeks so I don’t want to be on AF then or need to be doing the HSG at that time. So I plan on taking it while on the trip and then I’ll start when I get home.
On another note, this week has been mentally exhausting. At work I had a new class start so I’m training 8 hours a day plus any OT I’m putting in to prep. Then I’m spending time on my college course. I have an argument paper due Sunday night and in the art of procrastinating because I was dreading it. I have just started writing it this week. So I’ve had and still have a lot of work to do on it. With that being said I was so tired after work I was literally falling asleep in the middle of doing things. So I took a much needed nap!

The Meat-based Mind Conveyance is a Pain in the Ass
“Embodiment is a bad joke” is not, like, a hot take for Tumblr, I know, but my meat machine is being especially awful in the last 9 months (CW for lots of medical and menstrual stuff).
2 scopes of the gastro persuasion (might as well cover both ends if you’re gonna do it)
Precancerous polyps removed
Got a brain MRI with contrast where the contrast escaped my vein and caused temporary (thank God) weakness and pain in my right arm
Seen PCP
Seen OBGYN (twice!)
New neurologist for increasing and changing migraine symptoms
Got my mammogram
Multiple eye dr trips for a diagnosis of severe dry eye disease for which I was prescribed drops that cost $500 a month (WITH insurance—looking for other options)
Seen pulmonologist
Sleep study that diagnosed moderate sleep apnea
Started using CPAP
Had irregular periods for the first time since I was a teen
Including bleeding for 40 days straight
Found 2 new fibroids and 1 that was found previously that has grown to golf ball size. Nothing grapefruit sized like before yet thankfully.
Had a major bout of vertigo that sent me to the ER and made me bed bound for about a week
Turns out this is because a virus reactivated and caused severe damage to one of the right side balance nerves, destroying 75% of its function
Going to start VRT soon to try to rehab and make my brain compensate
Thyroid hormones are doing weird things so have to see an endocrinologist
I have to get an HSG to check the position of the fibroids
And I may have POTS so I am supposed to get a tilt table test
(Oh and my endometriosis is probably back)
I am TIRED of doctors and hospitals and medical settings. Really, really, really tired. I wish the meat-based head conveyance would behave itself. I have papers to write and conferences to attend and Zelda games to play.
