Hudson Terraplane c.1937
The Hudson Utility Coupe had a 212 cu in (3.5 L) L-head straight-six engine, rated at 96 horsepower, giving the Hudson Terraplane Utility coupe the most power of its class, for that time. Not only did the utility coupe have power, it also had strength, the complete load capacity being rated for a half ton.
Terraplane automobiles gained notoriety for being clocked at 80 mph, which could compete with the new Ford V-8's performance. Within a year, Essex-Terraplane became known simply as the Terraplane.

Through the Looking Glass
Above, from left: When Teddy Roosevelt announced in 1912 that he would run for president against his former VP, William Howard Taft, Brown Brothers sent photographer Charles Duprez to Oyster Bay to take this famous photo; President Taft and his wife, Helen “Nellie” Taft, in 1909; famed New York Giants pitcher Christy Mathewson warms up before a game, circa 1912.…

View of Amelia Earhart, sitting between an unidentified man and woman, looking at a book on her lap during the launch of the Essex Terraplane automobile. Spectators and loudspeakers in background. The event, featuring Earhart, took place next to the Hudson factory in Detroit, Michigan. Stamped on back: "J.W. Hughes, Detroit's photographer since 1885. This rustic "Ghost Canyon" cabin, located 6 km from Desert Horse Inn, offers simplistic while exclusive accommodation as it tucked away in a secluded valley, where a rusty bullet-ridden Hudson Terraplane 1934 wreck greets you at the entrance road. According to other rumours the real story is much simpler: the last owner of the car got so angry when it stopped moving once again that he decided to use a gun to put it out of its misery. The Hudson have been out there for more than 70 years but still looks surprisingly intact, all the paint is gone, but some of the chrome and nickel parts still look amazingly good.

This nice five window microcar is a custom-built coupé created by George S. Brauks, a St. Louis, Missouri foundry pattern maker and carriage builder.
The front of the car is a 1937 Hudson Terraplane 2-door coupé. The rear part seems to be a 1936 DeSoto. The entire car was narrowed lengthwise on the centerline to create a narrow body width.

Junkyard Gem: 1937 Hudson Terraplane
Junkyard Gem: 1937 Hudson Terraplane
In the 15 years that I’ve been writing about automotive history as viewed through the lens of the car graveyard, the oldest vehicles I’ve documented were two 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe sedans (one of which I ended up buying). Oh, sure, I’ve photographed even older discarded machines, but 1941 was as far back as I had ventured for single-car-specific junkyard features. As of today, though, I’ve…
