An oasis of calm, and a heightened sense of seclusion without feeling suffocated or cut off from the natural world.

This beautiful home in Aalen, Germany sits on a site that was once cast aside by prospective buyers due to its unusual and challenging topography. However, Liebel Architekten saw this as an opportunity to design a building that would play on these difficulties to create an ideal living experience for its inhabitants. Much of the property is effectively hidden from the rest of the urban environment due to these peculiarities. To counter this, the strategic use of floor-to-ceiling windows allow for the unrestricted admittance of light into the property creating a subtle interrelation between the living quarters, garden, and wider countryside which is visible from every room. The connection to the natural world is heightened whilst a maximum degree of privacy is maintained. Similar properties with extensive openings feel at times over-exposed, in this case, the effect is the exact opposite.

With the split-level concept, different rooms are located at varying elevations which allow for a playful exchange between separate living spaces, whilst a central staircase brings these design elements together to create a sense of continuity. The result is a stunningly beautiful modern home that actually feels like one. In 2011, it was awarded the prestigious Hugo Häring Award which recognises outstanding feats in urban planning and design.

Walter Peterhans

(1897-1960)

Walter Peterhans (12 de junio de 1897 - 12 de abril de 1960) fue un fotógrafo alemán más conocido como profesor y director de fotografía en la Bauhaus de 1929 a 1933 y en la Escuela Reimann de Berlín y su posterior inmigración a Chicago en 1938 para enseñar el curso de "entrenamiento visual" a los estudiantes de arquitectura en el Instituto de Tecnología de Illinois bajo la dirección de Mies van der Rohe.

Había diez modulos en este curso, que se cursaran durante cuatro semestres. El curso fue tan exitoso, que sobrevivió a Peterhans por más de treinta años.  En la Bauhaus, la enseñanza de Peterhans implicó el uso de las teorías de Kant, Platón y Pitágoras para mostrar cómo la belleza se construye en la mente, y cómo se puede crear en las obras de arte. 

En 1953 Peterhans fue parte de la facultad inicial de la Escuela de Diseño de Ulm (Hochschule für Gestaltung, 1953-1968) en Alemania, que se convirtió en una reconocida e influyente escuela de diseño. El trabajo propio de Peterhans en los años 30 era primer plano, naturalezas muertas, impresiones de gelatina de plata de objetos comunes, y vino a la Bauhaus invitado por Hannes Meyer.

En América se casó brevemente con la arquitecta estadounidense Gertrude Lempp Kerbis antes de casarse con Brigitte Schlaich, también arquitecta, en 1957.Su trabajos, fueron en su mayoria naturalezas muertas, con objetos cotidianos, acercamientos con un toque de abstraccion y algunos retratos con una estetica inquietante.

VeloNotte explores great architecture from various cities of the Earth - by bike by night with historians, architects and artists.
