My Beautiful Laundrette (Stephen Frears, 1985)
Cast: Gordon Warnecke, Daniel Day-Lewis, Roshan Seth, Saeed Jaffrey, Shirley Anne Field, Rita Wolf, Derrick Branche. Screenplay: Hanif Kureishi. Cinematography: Oliver Stapleton. Production design: Hugo Luczyc-Wyhowski. Film editing: Mick Audsley. Music: Stanley Myers, Hans Zimmer. A fusillade across the bow of Thatcherite Britain, My Beautiful Laundrette manages to take on racism, homophobia, and capitalist entrepreneurship all in one breathtaking moment. It also served as a breakthrough film for Daniel Day-Lewis as Johnny, a gay skinhead with an Anglo-Pakistani lover, Omar (Gordon Warnecke).

365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #45: Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005) - dir. Stephen Frears
Director Stephen Frears is great at making feel-good British dramedies, particularly period-piece biopics that focus on the first half of the twentieth century. Last summer’s Florence Foster Jenkins was a fine example of this, but Mrs. Henderson Presents is a similarly pleasing offering. Based on the true story of Laura Henderson (Judi Dench), a wealthy widow who bought and revived a rundown London theater in 1937, Presents follows Laura’s fight to keep her new institution – a musical revue which she updates to include full-frontal nudity – open during wartime. She is assisted by the show’s designer/stage manager, Vivian Van Damm (Bob Hoskins), a man with whom Laura verbally spars on a constant basis. It is pure joy to watch Dench and Hoskins, two of the finest actors in the history of UK cinema, grin slyly at each other as they wade through venomous arguments.
Most of the supporting roles for the performers in the Henderson-Van Damm show are decent but nothing extraordinary; Kelly Reilly, Natalia Tena, Sarah Solemani and Rosalind Halstead play some of the main showgirls, while Will Young plays the show’s resident showman with a sweet tenor voice. With the exception of Kelly Reilly, these smaller roles don’t carry much weight in the film, but again, at least you’ll delight in the aforementioned lead performances from Dench and Hoskins, and Christopher Guest has a terrific part as Lord Cromer, the royal who is in charge of overseeing the revue, despite being flustered by its bawdiness. Mrs. Henderson Presents also provides constant eye candy thanks to the exquisite costumes by Sandy Powell and the art direction, production design and set decoration by Paul Ghirardani, Tony Woollard, Hugo Luczyc-Wyhowski, Claudia Parker and Robert Wischhusen-Hayes. With its beautiful aesthetic appeal, a soundtrack full of lovely songs and the consistent momentum of high-quality entertainment, Frears’ film is certain to leave a splendid impression on you.
