Huka falls, North Island, Aotearoa
Waterfalls of the North Island. Classic Whangarei waterfall and Huka falls under Taupo, which is almost not a waterfall, but it feels even grander because it is a raging river squeezed into a narrow canyon several hundred meters long, and all its power seeks and does not find an outlet until it reaches the plain. And so you look at the river in its quiet course and you can’t imagine what power is hidden in it.

Taupo
A primarily tourism driven town of 26,000 people, Taupo may lack the big sights of nearby Rotorua but makes for a pleasant, relatively low key place to spend a few days exploring. A treat in the town centre was the amount of street art around, over 85 murals, a product of Graffiato: Taupō Street Art Festival, New Zealand’s longest running annual street art festival, which is held over Labour Day…

This is so not the point of the post I just saw but they posted a map of where they live and I am now having to grapple with the fact that the Niagara Falls are just, like, in a city??? That's populated???? I defs thought you would have to drive at least 2-3 hours to get there from anywhere people live (like the Huka Falls or the Victoria Falls on the Nile these being the largest falls I personally have been to)

Kofai, Sesbania coccinea, a botanical rarity
The Kofai (Sesbania coccinea) is a shrub or sometimes a small tree endemic to French Polynesia and distributed in the Marquesas, Tuamotu and Society archipelagos. While it seems to have disappeared from the Society Archipelago, it is still present in a number of Tuamotu atolls, without ever being really abundant.
In the Tuamotus, the Kofai is directly threatened by man when he clears land or builds fare, as in Mataiva. Moreover, the scarcity or absence of fruit is worrying and possibly indicates a pollination problem.
This rarity led to its protection in 2006 on the list of protected species falling under category A (order n°296 CM of March 18, 1996): all its subspecies are therefore protected in French Polynesia.
The atoll of Niau today includes the largest populations of Kofai in Polynesia with several hundred feet distributed along the lagoon and under the coconut grove, disseminated as they are by the regular flooding of the lower parts of the island on the side lagoon.
Formerly present on the atoll of Tahanea on several motu of the interior of the lagoon and in particular in Torea Manu, it is no longer found today except in Urutetou in the form of 10 to 15 adult feet in flower but without fruit and a few seedlings. His disappearance in Torea Manu may be the result of a fire that took place ten years earlier.
Motu Tekohai is the only surviving site of the only known population in Ua Huka of the endemic shrub locally called 'kohai', Sesbania coccinea var atollensis subsq. Quaylei (legume).
