A sharp, bright white light stabbed its way below Jay’s eyelids a few mornings after they’d gone caroling. He closed his eyes more tightly, willing himself to fall back asleep. He sensed it was before 10AM. It was way too early to be awake while he was on vacation. 

But his thoughts betrayed him, beginning to form and wake him up further, starting with the wish for his sleep mask. But he  refused to reach for it in his bedside table, worried that the movement would wake him up more. 

He burrowed under the covers more instead, blocking out light, but making breathing more difficult. As his breathing grew more challenged he realized something else...something bad. His blue eyes opened and his expression grew disappointed and a bit worried.

Hello, I was wondering if you could help with choosing a career path for Hunter that isn’t a lawyer or doctor?

Hello!!! I actually run Watching Clarington RPs where I answer questions like this, plus there's also a lot of other things there like Hunter lookalikes and his interests and etc etc. But I'm more than happy to answer your question here!!

As it is canon that he comes from a military school, and most likely from a military family, I could definitely see him working in the military in some capacity. It's no secret that he is ambitious, as he goes through every length to achieve what he wants, so I don't particularly see him doing something that doesn't take a lot of work and effort. In that regard, I see him attending college in order to get a job that requires a degree, or two, or three, unless your Hunter mellows out as he gets older and isn't so occupied with being overly ambitious/competitive. There are certainly plenty of ways to play him!

With that said, I could also see him going into science, particularly chemistry as possibly a chemist, or maybe into something that has to do with his body such as a personal trainer or playing a professional sport, perhaps tennis or swimming. He is not really a team player, he's always looking after himself, so any job where he can work alone is definitely ideal, or at least with only a small group of people. Business I could also see him thriving in, espeically as a title such as CEO or editor and etc etc. He likes to take charge.

If your Hunter is a little older and has learned from his past mistakes and wishes to do something a little more creative and less-corporate-y, I could also see him thriving in something creative like painting or sculpting. Or maybe something that is the best of both worlds, both creative and ambitious, working as an art director or a museum curator.

✎ BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

When Hunter was twelve and he had to describe his life in three words for a school homework, the ones he used were “tradition, family and honor”. While other kids were busy filling theirs with whatever boy group they were into at the moment or the name of an actor, Hunter repeated the words of his father. It wasn’t much to the man’s surprise that Hunter succeeded in everything that was thrown at him. Sports? Captain of the team in high school. Academics? All AP classes and the most perfect chemistry score the school had ever seen. Social life? He was polite and not hard to make friends wish - confident, aware of his skills, funny at the right time. His relationship with his family wasn’t as turbulent as people would expect it to be - they were strict, but Hunter didn’t mind the order and the expectations. He didn’t mind the responsibility. Or so he thought.

As Campbell moved away from their family to follow her dream, Hunter prepared to join the Air Force Academy. A process that usually takes time and preparation, a lot of networking and sometimes even someone on the inside. All things Hunter had taken care of already during several events his parents took them. The process was smooth and soon he was in. He chose a major, he chose a minor, he made friends. This was what he was used to, the life that had been laid out for him. Be great - and make a career out of it.

Hunter took care of his needs with the same logic he would take care of everything else. There was an order to it. Systematic. No feelings. A scene when a withdrawal was close, sex when he felt his body too heavy, having a someone submit to him when he had a headache. The Air Force didn’t mind the system the cadets had going on, they actually reinforced it. Classes weren’t easy and the majority of the students were stressed and sleep deprived, and so was Hunter. But he carried on, he had a role to fulfill. Responsibilities. His life continued on this path until he got a call from his mother - already done with college, already in active duty - Campbell was home, her claim had been killed.

Hunter took his leave and flew home. Even though he managed to stay a month, he couldn’t bear the sight of seeing his lively and full of adventure sister like that. The responsibilities once thrown at him as a child weighing on him once again. This was his sister and there was nothing he could do, nothing he could possibly think of doing. The leadership training at the Air Force did not prepare him for a shadow of what Campbell used to be. He went back to work with that in mind.

The following months were a downward spiral. Each phone call from his mother would leave Hunter more worried, each withdrawal he missed would leave him more stressed, each morning he slept in would leave him feeling more guilty. His own order had been broken and Hunter had no idea how he could put that back together now. So he did what any sensible person would do: he snapped. Over nothing. A cadet had dropped a pencil case from a desk and made a whole lot of noise and Hunter insulted him, his wits and everyone present in the room. Storming out, shutting doors, even beating a colleague that tried to stop him, yelling at everyone in sight.

The next day, he was sent to get an evaluation from one of the healthcare workers of the facility he was working at. The stress, the amount of missed withdrawals and the obvious weight on his shoulders were all written in the report that had him suspended for undetermined time and transferred to the Dalton Sanctuary for treatment. At first he thought it was a horrible idea, so much work would end up piled up because of it, but after a few sessions with the base’s therapist Hunter was convinced to at least try to have his own life for once. He had no idea he would find his own sister there.

Absolutely, Tiger. What career path your version of Hunter goes down is going to be determined by what you want his interests and skills to be and how you write his family background, in my opinion that's how it works for any character. There are always a few different options, I don' t think there is any character that could only go one way.

For Hunter Clarington, some of his canon interests/skills are:

gymnastics

military service

singing/dancing

leadership

persuasion/tactics

Those interest and skills lead me to careers like:

coaching or teaching at Dalton, the military academy, or any other school; the public school route could show humility while the private school route would lean on his family background

joining the military, which for someone like Hunter would very likely mean climbing the ranks because we see he's competitive; however, keeping him low on the ladder could mean he'd learned a lesson in humility and could be used as a means of character development

joining a circus

event coordinator

Olympic competition or similar feats of Herculean might

Broadway and/or modeling

news anchor, tv show host, radio host, or some form of journalism. lobbying, or law; though he is just as likely to loathe the media entirely after his own scandal

business owner or CEO, he could own his own coffee shop, gym, dance studio/competitive team or training facility

librarian or some other quiet work fits too, especially if you want to lean into how his character seemed to go radio silent and into hiding after his scandal
