Two days ago, at the first day of autumn, I fertilized all my roses probably for the last time this year with an organic rose and flower fertilizer. Some of them have set new buds already and I hope the others will follow suit and all of them delight me with a beautiful autumn flush. Temperatures have finally cooled down here a little in Austin and that will certainly help. We desperately need rain, though, but my roses, of course, get hand watered until natural rain arrives. Are you also hoping to see your roses bloom one more time this year? The mauve/lavender rose in the picture is Sweetness, a stately grandiflora rose with an amazingly strong citrus fragrance that I grew in my old garden in Dan Diego. I miss her, sigh! The delicious Rosa ‘Double Delight’, today’s #oneadayplant. . My friend @markrichreeve got the jump on me and posted a lovely picture of this Hybrid Tea Rose yesterday (check it out). He quite rightly pointed out that it has a weakness in that it has (more than) a tendency to succumb to fungal attack. It’s true. You can even see it on my picture. I decided that it was better for you to see it as a reality rather than through ‘rose-tinted spectacles’ 🌹 👓 Pun intended and not apologised for. It definitely is an issue and the foliage is damaged most years with fungal blotching. I have tried (once) to spray for it and it may be possible, but concluded that it wasn’t worth it. I’m not a fan of excessive maintenance. I’d also say that despite the fungal leaf spotting, it doesn’t stop it flowering, so hardly worth worrying about. . I like the flower at this stage rather than fully open. I have my parents a plant of this variety years ago, maybe 2003?! It is still going strong. Smells beautiful, petal colours have the most wonderful colours. It is like a a very delicately dyed silk fabric. Amazing flower. . Generally, on the East Coast of Scotland, this plant will have an open flower still on on Christmas Day each year. Finally arrives my favourite time of the year- the peak season of Roses😍. Coming from India, roses for me were limited to shrub plantation till I was introduced to their actual world of bushes and climbers in my gardening lessons this year. Blossom Yellow Rose A golden hybrid tea rose that we planted as a bare root one year ago, offered its first yellow rose blossom today and it is a true beauty. There is a slight fragrance from it’s petals and it is opening in a most graceful form. Though these floral beauties have an abundance of thorns, they are still a favored flowers for many gardeners. There is just an overpowering attraction to the fragrance that they fill the air with along with their soft fluffy petals. My husband and I both love roses and gardening. The first date we had, I saw his rose garden. His green thumb showed beautifully with a dark red rose bush covering the whole corner of his garden right at the sidewalk that you walked into his house. This rose looked so happy and full of fragrant blossoms I immediately knew he was a man to take a really close look at, a keeper. Ongoing Growth Many years have passed since we first met, and we have both built a large garden now in the wilderness of Elk WA, a beautiful mountainous area in the rural areas of northern Spokane. We do not have an unlimited budget so the planting of beautiful flowers has taken longer than the staples like vegetables, berries, fruit, and spices, one thing at a time.
