The Barbed Wire & Symbolic Personification in “The Lone Ranger #1″

Before we even open up the pages of “The Lone Ranger #1″ we are primed to anticipate the importance of the barbed wire.

The comics cover features the image of the Lone Ranger entangled in a trap of barbed wire. Interestingly, there is no other communicative information presented on the cover; we can thusly assume that the Ranger is our protagonist (for obvious reasons) and that the barbed wire itself will act as antagonist (since it is the opposing force that we are presented with).

The barbed wire quickly returns as a meta-symbol on the credits page. This time, rather than have it be actively involved as a communicative image, it is passively positioned alongside the introduction material. Again, this subtly implants within the mind of the reader that this barbed wire will be important to the narrative of the book. This most certainly becomes true as the narrative of the comic progresses.

What we eventually learn is that it is the intention of the “future” Senator is to enact laws allowing his “civilized companions” an opportunity to shirk land deeds and expand their property by laying barbed wire fencing throughout Deaf Smith County. The barbed wire, here, acts as a border; simultaneously exerting power and solving the problems associated with the “vagrant wanderer(s) from [their] land”.

By association then, the barbed wire becomes a colonial tool; it encroaches into territory that is not its own by force, becoming a symbol of domination that functions, through symbolic personification, as a colonialist.

This page in particular further emphasizes this fact:

Notice how the page is a splash foregrounding two native men on horseback. It features large, green land and a horizon line that suggests a sprawling plain. The panel featuring the white, colonialists are insets; panels that do not belong within the larger-splash page content but rather are superimposed over it. Symbolically, this further suggests the colonialist’s intention to take land (or space on the page) that does not belong to them.

Now, knowing what we know, it will become clear how the barbed wire becomes personified. Let's return to the opening pages of the comic.

Through the act of retroactive signification (a term identified by comics theorist Thierry Groensteen to suggest the way that returning to previous material in a comic is enhanced by information provided later in a page/book), we can begin to see how the barbed wire acts as a character in the first scene.

Below is the first real moment within the comic that the barbed wire acts as character. It is also, by far, my favourite panel of the whole comic:

Here, the letterer, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, has chosen to layer the speech balloon underneath the barbed wire. It is an important moment as it signals to us that the barbed wire is just as oblivious to traditional boundary lines as the colonialists are. By ignoring the common rules for word balloons (that they are placed over top of panel content), the barbed wire becomes a menacing force that is powerful enough to exert it’s influence over even the formal elements of the comic.

(Just as an aside: This brilliant use of the comics medium truly shouldn’t come as a surprise from Otsmane-Elhaou, who not only edits the Eisner-nominated digital comics journal, PanelxPanel, but also analyzes the communicative power of comics through his YouTube show, Strip Panel Naked, and breaks down the masterpiece that is Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s Watchmen in his podcast, Under the Hood: A Watchmen Minutia Podcast. Otsmane-Elhaou’s handle on the way that comics communicate is exemplary and this simple choice in layering makes possible the powerful symbolic personification that we are witnessing with the barbed wire. It is certainly this issue's most impressive moment.)

Immediately following the introduction of the barbed wire as character, we meet the man that it is representative of (the man who put it there). In him, we see a character that is equally ignorant of boundaries and borders. We know this because the first time that we see the image of him, his hat has broken both the hyperframe and frame of the panel above it.

This connection makes us perceive the barbed wire as an extension of this man; particularly since his actions on the page replicate the actions of the wire. They both share a similar lack of consideration for boundaries and rules.

All of this culminates in the wire being perceived as dangerous, powerful, and menacing even when the man that put it there is gone. It is aided by the connection to the colonialists but by the time we reach the end of the opening scene the character of the barbed wire comes off just as dangerously as any of the colonialist men. This is visually reinforced when we finally see the lawful man dead on the wire.

Rather than see him being killed, we only see the lawful man's corpse dangling on the barbed wire fence. Symbolically then, the barbed wire becomes substitute for the killer and reinforces the power and malice inherent in it's characterization. It most certainly didn’t pull the trigger, but it had enough narrative control to seal the man’s death all on its own.
