Dug through the Pile of Lace in search of something square and under 5' across. I have two pieces that are the right size but aren't candidates to be painted (one has beads, the other is tiny leafs and i'm not painting another of those for a long while.) The remaining square one will block out around 8' across, which is too big to work in my current space.

So oh noes. I have to do a round one! hehehee After work, i'm breaking down the square frame and putting together the round one. (ok octagonal but 'round' is easier to type)

This is a short week for me - i'm off on Friday, and then through the 2nd, because borthday. No actual plans for what i'll be doing for a week. probably what i'm doing now, except not doing workstuff while i'm at it.

Things I Think I Might Do With My Birthday Break:

work on personal website where i will put patterns and how-to babble in an easier to use format than my tumblr (if it goes well, then maybe a ko-fi or something because while i really do not want to monetize my hobbies, i'm still broke af and paint and yarn get spendy) (my former weed budget is being put towards yarn/paints and i have #Feels about it)

paint the lace cardi. i've got a handle on my paints and techniques (such as they are) so technicolor dreamcardigan, here i come!

assemble marble run kits

gaming - DAVG and BG3 and so many other games, just hanging out on my steamdeck, calling out in haunting voices "play us! plaaaaaaaaaay ussssssss! let coral island rest for a few! come back to us and pick up from before your partywipe!"

botanical gardens? maaaaaybe. if it's not super warm or windy (i don't like schlepping my parasol around but especially not when it's windy)

miniatures - maybe work on the gothy kitbash i started forever ago before i lost focus on it

clean stuff (ahahahahahaaa yeah no)

hang out with people? Maybe? If anyone is around and wants to be crafty/quasisocial?

There are a lot of things you can do as a conversation level speaker!

I think you have to be 18 for most of them? I could be wrong

You can do work from home transcription and translation! This is how I got into my own job!

There are a few companies that I do not suggest due to their strict nature or shady business practices

* TranscribeMe

* UpWork - I do not like it in general

* BabbleType

These companies have strict practice and may not be the best suited

I have had poor relations with them.

If you fail even one spelling they deny you forever from the job.

Things to know in general:

Jobs like these pay for by the minute! Which means depending on how fast you type you can make money very quickly.

In my experience I have found it takes me about 15 -25 minutes to translate a 15 minute audio piece, this is to be able to correct myself as well.

At 1.40$ per minute I would get paid 21 dollars. Or 84 dollars an hour.

While this is really incentivizing, these companies can tend to cheat you. DO NOT WORK FOR THEM IF THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO W2 YOU!!! Please learn from my experience!

Some companies will also, if you are japanese speaking as a second language, take a duolingo score for a job! This is really neat, while I do not wholly agree with duolingo I find it fun and a good way to engage in learning! I have seen colleges and jobs now taking this as experience!

Safe Sites to find translation jobs

Job searching sites like this! They are safe sites and you can always report the job if it turns out to be shady.

General safety

No job should ever ask you for passwords like for your PayPal, Bank Account, or other accounts. If they are a real company they can transfer right to your accounts. Please do not give your information such as passwords. If you are worried about filing with a company you can :

-- ask for their tax payer ID. This is something that is linked to the government and will show up on a W2 for taxes. This is not hidden information and if they fight with you over something like this DO NOT CONTRACT !

-- search them on Green Glass Doors, almost every company is on here. There should be reports of salary, reviews, info about the company in general and that should be good to look at. If you can't find it on Green Glass Doors I would 100% ask for a tax payer ID.

How do you know if Japanese at home translations is for you ?

Well, I really thought this was the job for me, I have wanted to do this since I was very very young and found...I really. R e a l l y do not like audio transcription or translation at home.

There is never enough quiet time for me, I feel like as long as I am on my computer I am distracted and people always bother me. I get up frequently and leave my work. I also just. Really did not enjoy the subject.

A lot of audio places are asking you to transcribe audio of business conventions (?). I find it very difficult to place the speakers' titles in these things and it really annoys me.

Personally I like transcribing Japanese and translations from text.

These are things you should definitely try out for yourself before seeking out a job in that specific field. Its as easy as going to YouTube, searching a medical conversation (the most common kind) and tabbing out of it so you can see if you can place speakers and transcribe /translate well

How should I charge for freelance translations ?

So first off, most companies will give you a wage if you are W2'd with them, this is generally why I suggest this because it just feels safer and cozier.

If you are a freelancer it means you are 1099 / W9, you do not belong to a company. My personal suggestions for wages are generally

* 20 - 50$ per page at 12 - 14 size font for text

* .80 - 1.50 per minute for audio work

These should be based on how fast and ACCURATE you think you can do the work at. If you have no experience take the lower, you will still make a reasonable amount of money :)

*** Audio rates are for the length of the file that you are sent, not how long it takes you! Please keep this in mind when doing them. Again, audio files can take up to twice the amount of time as the length of the file.

Hi, I saw your post about needing ideas. Have you tried babbletype? I had a friend who did english to english transcription but they pay better for translation+transcription. It can be inconsistent, but they do pay in USD through paypal. Also, do you have a Kofi or something I could donate to?

Hey gizka! I know this is a weird question to ask so suddenly but I remember you once said that you were a transcriptionist for TranscribeMe! once. So I was wondering if you feel that thats a safe site to work with? And um.. did you use a personal paypal account or did you set up a business account? i think it’s okay as a transcriptionist. would i put my data on there as a researcher? no.

and, to be candid, the pay is very VERY small with online services like these. like 0.33 a minute rates. if you follow the rule of 1 hour of audio = 3 hours of transcribing, that’s about $20 for three hours of work (about 6.50 an hour). and usually the audio files are shit, so it takes longer.

if you’re just starting out, i recommend taking jobs that aren’t verbatim transcribing (where you have to transcribe things like backchanneling/fillers) and ideally one to two speakers (less speakers = easier time transcribing).

i’m not as familiar with this site as i am with doing it freelance, since i’ve only used it in a pinch when finances are dire. but if you want to do transcribing for a long-term gig vs. a short-term/in a pinch gig, i’d recommend contacting a university and getting some contacts through a research center.

in terms of financing, i’ve always used a personal paypal and didn’t have any issues. but business account is probably the smarter option

on that note i’ve heard good (better) things about Babbletype, though i haven’t used that myself yet!

In conclusion, please note that survey sites are another great source for extra cash paid regularly. There aren’t exactly online jobs that pay weekly, but you can only get paid as often as you have money pending. Even though the cash out threshold is low on these, you won’t be able to cash out if you aren’t getting survey invites and qualifying into the surveys. But if you have money in your account, the potential is there to get the money almost as soon as you need it.

Saw a cat cross the yard out of the corner of my eye. Oooh! Which kitty is this? (I've named most of the ones that come around frequently)

Nope. Fluffy black fur with two bright white stripes. Very much not a kitty.

I've known that we have skunks around here for a while, but i've never actually seen one of them. (Yes, I've seen skunks before, and got to handle one when I was a kid - I love skunks! They're like wider, fluffier, stinkier ferrets! But it's not the sort of thing I expect to see in the middle of a city!)

And the floofiness of the tail made me realize that if D and I were still caring for Kalilea, i'd want to give her white stripes for halloween. Skunk Puppy!

(K is a very floofy black pomeranian who is currently living a very good life with my best friend, and while I miss having her around, she's so very much better off where she is. She was my much-missed late housemate's beloved service dog, and she's having a very good, well deserved retirement.)

Ugh. Humans are exhausting. Today, I'm calling the general public, which I hate doing, because there's no reason to expect the person on the other end of the line to act like a professional adult, and instead they're all too likely to mishear something and take that jumble of words that are not at all what you said and run with it like you're intent on somehow doing them harm.

*headdesk*headdesk*headdesk*

Like, how much energy does it take to keep up that amount of rancor and paranoia? Yeesh.

Just listen to the words the harmless person on the phone says, and if you don't understand them, ASK what they heck they're talking about, instead of proving the dunning-kreuger thing right and running with whatever the fuck you think you're ranting about.

Gah. Only half an hour more, and then I'm free until morning. Siiiiiiiigh. I'll take it, but I'm not happy about it.

Took myself offline for the long weekend, and oh, it was GLORIOUS

I'm sure that any important news I missed, I'll quickly pick up.

But I knitted (got the main body done, spent a day reworking the edging patterns, and then figuring out which needle I needed to be working on because knit-on borders are the devil, but once they're going, they're gorgeous.) (No decent pics yet because it's still all clumped up on the cables. Once I get this sucker free, I will be sharing pics - it's really gorgeous! I can't wait to show it off!) and watched Cosmos for the umpteenth time (and had a grand time telling the screen "oh, they figured that out!" several times - science has learned a lot since it was filmed!) and a rather large number of Waldemar Januszczak docs. (Art history was never one of my majors, but it could easily have been if I'd stuck college out for another year or so.)

And I read… some number of novels. (I wasn't really paying attention to the count. I rarely do.)

Played video games. Picked up one in the steam sale, but it's definitely a WIP (Hometopia - building game that is sort of halfway between the building in the sims, and house flipper) (the UI is clunky as hell, but apparently an overhaul is on the near-term roadmap, so I'm not going to do much with it yet because UI changes always mess with me, and I don't want to get used to the 'old' way.)

In TMI news, my fucking period decided that nope, I am NOT on track to consider myself done with this nonsense soon (it'd been since April, dammit!) and slammed me with the worst cramps and associated unpleasantness I've experienced in a couple of decades. Extinction burst hopefully?? Blergh.

Mermaid dollhouse just needs foliage, and the final decision if i'm going to use the blue LEDs or not. Additional (taller!) foliage supposedly arriving on Thursday.

Decided that I didn't like the clear plastic "walls" so instead I added crossbeams up top so I could hang the chandelier in the living room.

Tall foliage is going to help define inside/outside, and also hide wires.

200 rows to go on current lace project. I think I need to start another pair of socks so I'm not working at teeny scale for everything.

Very annoyed with my body right now. I am having the worst cramps I've had in probably the past decade, and dammit, I went the better part of a year thinking I might actually be done with this nonsense, but noooooooooo.

Gah. Gonna whine into a text box for a few. Gotta get this out of my skull because it's starting to head into a spin cycle.

Had one whole kid last night. The screaming toddler from the main house on our lot. His dad is trying very hard, his mom isn't terribly fond of me for some reason (No Idea Whatsoever. She basically just doesn't speak to me other than single syllable answers to direct questions. Maybe.)

Finally got my living ship in No Man's Sky. Right before I figured out how to use the portals, I got the cutest little marble of a ship so I will probably never actually take my living ship anywhere again. (It's pokeyslow in atmo, whereas my marble is a zippy little thing that can fit almost anywhere. I like the teeny ships.)

Of course, now I've achieved that, once I get to the center of Euclid, I'll probably quit playing. Sure, there's other galaxies/universes/whatevers, but it'll just me more of the same, I suspect.

I want some sort of overgame - NMS, but one of the planets is the planet from Subnautica, you can find Earth and/or Eden Prime and rummage around in the Mass Effect universe**, and any number of other games. Give me a reason to stay on a planet for more than the five minutes it takes to scan some stuff, pop a knowledge stone or two, and move on to the next one, which is basically the same.

Meh. It's a silly idea. Better many games than one giant one.

I'm thinking of this as a tolerance break, because I was killing carts in three days that usually take me a week, so I really DO need it. This is the most annoying phase - headaches and irritable and wanting something i can't define but it's sure as shit not my knitting or anything on streaming or any of the books in my backlog or ….. yeah.

By the time I start dreaming again, it'll be fine. (Except for the actual dreaming part - not looking forward to that, but maybe I won't get the really bad ones immediately?)

The knitting, well, I'm doing another pair of socks, and socks are boring as shit, but they're easy, and I have the yarn for them.

I need to start writing up my patterns for the site I will eventually put up. Not that grumpy is the best tone to take, of course.***

The craft room is stalled; I can't get my desk in there until I find homes for the things living on it (my jewelry, my box of precious treasures (trash to anyone else, but meaningful to me), photos, yadda yadda. Stuff that doesn't belong in my craft space. And the arm of my comfy chair was peed on at some point (it predates Bitey Asshole Cat, so it was one of my girls. Yay. I need to find the cat pee stuff and hope it will help after all this time) and I don't want a chair that stinks of cat piss in my nice crafting space.

(Also needs pillows because it's not currently comfy.)

I need upholstery foam to refill the couch cushions anyway; comfy will just have to be my toile, I guess.

*Which wasn't all that great to start with, but it's 2000 years old, and there've been a few advances since then. I'd say it needs to be updated, but that's been tried and it just leads to more confusion. I vote scrap it and start over with a better, more inclusive text.

Though that seems to be the historical trajectory of most religions - someone has a nice idea, it goes viral, then the power hungry fuckheads get their hands on it and misuse the power the nice idea generated to shit all over the nice idea and convince a significant number of loud assholes that the inverse of the nice idea is how it was always meant to be and that they need to bring everyone else in line with whatever force they feel like using.
