PLEASE SIGNAL BOOST: I need to raise money for myself and a friend, both currently homeless.
THE SHORT VERSION:
-I am in India without access to my money due to a pickpocketing and bank-related technicalities.
-I am without housing due to repeated, egregious, explicit discrimination. This has depleted most of my funds and I relocated to Calcutta due to air quality, low cost of living, and beef.
-At the same time, a close friend and her partner (located in Delhi and Paris, respectively) have brought to my attention a friend of theirs who is literally being physically restrained in an abusive marriage. We are talking black eyes and bruises. It's a horrific situation but I need her also because she speaks Bengali. So the house hunting process is stalled until she escapes.
-I am staying at an airbnb very close to her place. Even after we manage to get her physically removed there'a more stuff we have to do like filing a police report etc. The airbnb is expensive by Calcutta standards, but it's cheaper than rent anywhere I've lived in the USA.
-I need money for two reasons: to pay the deposit on our flat, and to keep me alive until I can sort things out with the bank, which may not be possible until after I move into a permanent place.
THE SHORTER VERSION:
-Idiot foreigner and victim of ongoing battering need rescue funds so we don't die.

ON THE PICKPOCKETING AND BANK ISSUES:
-I was pickpocketed in the market about two months ago. That's life. It happens. Welcome to India. Some idiot got like 200 rupees so that's great for them but I had to cancel all my bank cards. Not really much I could do. I just got home and realised my wallet wasn't there anymore.
-Delhi does not have a functional mailing system at all. This means that the banks were more or less at a loss for how to get the cards at me. This is part of why I relocated to Calcutta. That's Bank Account A. The easy one, but also the far smaller one.
-But as for the larger and more consequential Bank Account B, which contains easily enough money for me to live off of in Calcutta for quite some time, they do not have any kind of policy for what to do in the event that someone ever manages to escape the land of the free and the home of the brave. This is the one tied to my social security payments, and is where all my money lives.
-So when I called Social Security they did that thing they do where they try to play gotcha with inconsistencies in your story. In my case I had already tried to get a replacement card weeks earlier, for reasons unrelated. "If it didn't get there weeks ago, wouldn't you have called weeks ago?" "What the fuck? No, I didn't solve any of the problems so why would I have called again and wasted my fucking time on this fucking phone line for no reason, again?" This was after a good 15 mins or so of this kind of grilling, which I find especially grating now after almost a year of living in countries where nobody can lie for shit and so there'a no point in every single fucking person pretending they're a TV detective whose purpose in life is to stop Moriarty from abusing welfare benefits. "If you're going to raise your voice at me, what I'm going to do is I'm going to place a security hold on your account and you'll need to verify your identity." Let me reiterate that she stated explicitly that this was in retaliation for raising my voice and not due to any real suspicion about my identity. In later calls to Social Security it would be revealed that she could
have easily seen on her computer that the card never got to me. That is information very easily verifiable by the World's Greatest Goddamn Detective over there.
-So the next person I called sent me on a wild goose chase to the American Embassy to pick up a form called a Memorandum of Understanding. Judging that the very limited funds I'd had stockpiled in my dresser was not best spent on an auto ride, I walked nearly an hour from the metro station to the embassy. There was a dust storm in this period and I read later that over a hundred people fucking died in it, but I just kept walking towards it because that's where the embassy was. Also I'd never seen a dust storm in my life and had no idea what it was or why the sky was pink.
-When I got there they told me straight up that 1. they don't do mail pickup, which is why the card hadn't gotten to me, and 2. they don't do memorandums of understanding. They offered to send me a different form for 50 USD. "Can't you borrow it?" they asked. "That's not a reasonable thing to say to someone who lives in India," I said straight up. "That's not a real amount of money that people in India have." That's American for "fuck off". So they wrote me a different letter in an attempt to verify my identity. I send this in with my only other forms of identification: my passport and an expired driver's license from Washington state. Waited 3 business days as instructed.
-They told me they can't use these because of issues relating to my legal name change a couple years ago. Social Security had not been updated as regards the change. "I have my birth certificate and my court certification for the name change, and I can fax those in."
-"What you'll have to do is go to you social security office in person--" "Look, I'm gonna cut you off there. You can see my current address right? Read that off to me. What city is that in." "New Delhi." "That's right, New Delhi. What country is that in? Great. So can, can you tell me where my local Social Security office is here in India?" She could not tell me where my local social security office was in India. There aren't any. That's why she couldn't tell me that. But again, no protocol for this situation and if an American bureaucrat breaks their protocol I'm 90% sure Obama's legally allowed to kill them.
-What I'll need to do is a complicated process involving appointing Americans to act as proxies to go in and file paperwork on my behalf. There are other ideas, but none of them are more sure or less complicated, and they all require me to have a permanent address.
ON WHY I DO NOT HAVE A PERMANENT ADDRESS:
-Those close to me know that I have had a hell of a time finding housing in India. It's not all that bad for an Indian to find housing and when my Indian friends have tried they've consistently been able to find me something in a few hours. But that something is living alone. Which 1. is depressing and 2. is tactically disadvantageous when you don't speak the language of a country because how you will tell the food panda guy where to go...
-So I moved in with an Indian girl who seemed nice enough, and her sister who seemed if anything even nicer. This was about a week before I was pickpocketed as described above.
-In India there's this big thing about vegetarianism where it's a highly important in determining one's role in caste hierarchy. Unfortunately for me I do not give a shit and think the caste system is dumb and scrambled myself some eggs. The disgust my caste Hindu roommates displayed towards me from that point on was palpable. Within another week they were asking me to leave. They got the landlord on their side fairly easily because that's how the caste system works and I was given less than a week to vacate. (To my knowledge there is no law like in USA saying they can't do that.) (Also if you're going to try to argue with me about how caste works shut up, I don't care, not the time.)
-The next day I would eat a straight-up poisoned "cheeseburger" and be sick for the following two weeks.
-Regardless of this I managed to miraculously line up a living arrangement with a Muslim roommate who expressed her approval of my award-winning omelettes and stated a willingness to go with me on beef crawls. (It's technically illegal in Delhi but if you know where to get it you can.)
-But it took about two weeks for the landlord to run my papers. I'm not sure why. Previous landlords had it done in 20 minutes. Most of my information about the landlord comes from this roommate, who is not a reliable narrator for reasons which will be explored shortly.
-During this period of 2 weeks, I, with alarming competence, managed to collect money from various friends and places to pay the deposit. I left my boxes of things at the old apartment and couch surfed around Delhi for like a week and a half while this was pending.
-To be honest I don't know what the fuck this roommate's problem was. She was just not a good person. She'd previously agreed to help me cash the contents of my paypal account through having it transferred to her bank, but now she was saying that if she stepped outside even for a second in this heat due to fasting.
-"Then you should not be fasting," I said, matter-of-factly. Look. Islamic law is my literal, actual field of study. You can't really pull one over on me as regards it. This is the ruling accepted by everyone who's not a goddamn lunatic. She didn't buy it though. Because she was lying. The next day she went to her cousin's house and somehow managed not to perish in the heat. Also, she'd previously explained to me how you can call the bankers to your house in India and do work that way. Then she tells me I am paying rent for the entire month despite moving in on like the 20th. "That's how it works everywhere in India," she told me. Wrong again, because this was literally the fifth house I'd moved into and none of them were like that.
-I now believe that this was something she made up on the spot because everything she would say for the remainder of our relationship would be.
-At this point my sense of stranger danger is going fucking haywire and I know I don't want to live with this person. I announce that I will leave in a matter of days. This was a GOOD decision.
-Citing "feeling unsafe" because I had raised my voice in an earlier argument, she invited her brother's sister-in-law(?) basically to troll me on etiquette because "people do not yell in India" which I actually laughed at because, not to claim expertise in a foreign culture, but ya-huh. "Not us," she clarified, "we are women from good families." Ah. A gender and caste thing. "What do you mean good families? My dad's in jail," I said, a statement about 20% likely to be true; I don't fucking know. I'd already agreed to vacate anyway. Anyway then she looked at me like I stabbed a cat in front of her.
-For the record, I didn't stab anything. But that night my roommate (Abaa) would invite her ex-boyfriend to stay the night. The next day he'd investigate a few of the claims Abaa had made.
-"Don't you agree this is a little threatening? Throwing boxes at her..." "What?" I asked. "Throwing boxes?" "She said you threw that box at her," he said, pointing to a container made of thin tin or aluminum which had been full of popcorn when I bought it. The tin drum was sitting on my desk, undented, full of medications and things. "I didn't do that," I said, truthfully. "She also said you grabbed a kitchen knife and tried to stab her." "What? And you believe this?" "She is my friend. I have to believe her." God bless this guy but he was not regarding me as one would regard someone who had just tried to STAB a friend of his. Also the kitchen knives sucked and would not have been practical stabbing implements; if I were going to attack someone surely the better choice would be the brass punchers I carry on my person at all times.
-She also called the police on me twice. I don't know what she was claiming, it was never explained to me. But both times they basically told her to chill, this isn't an ethno-state.
-Even on the way to the train station to Calcutta she's calling my cab driver trying to get him to turn around so she can yell at me over misplacing the key to the apartment. She texts me this:
Tumblr media
In her defence, I had accidentally taken the key, but still, not done, man. She blocked me after saying that so I couldn't arrange a way to get the key back. I guess she wasn't from such a great family after all.
TO CALCUTTA:
-Rent in Calcutta is about a quarter as expensive as in Delhi. Also, Delhi is kind of an overcrowded polluted place where people go to be slaves to capital and die of smoke inhalation and indigestion. The "cheeseburger" gave me my worst case but I pretty much never didn't have indigestion there. Also it's like 45 degrees every day with an Air Quality Index of like 350. So I felt pretty good about going to Calcutta where beef is legal and there's an active art scene and I have almost as many friends as in Delhi and AQI rarely tops 50 and everybody's a communist.
-On the train ride over, a very close friend and her boyfriend (who live in Delhi and Paris, respectively) alert me to a friend of theirs who is in a physically abusive marriage. She needs help escaping. After that, the two of us should get a flat together. They think it'll be good for her to live with me because I'm an abuse survivor who is strong and independent and has experience in DV counseling. Truthfully, they're right. And I didn't stop needing an Indian roommate or anything. So I enthusiastically agree.
-The place that had agreed to host me for my first stretch in Calcutta until I get a permanent place has two complications. One, to get to where my new roommate lives, I need to pay 500 rupees for a 1 hour uber ride, or I can ride the train for 3 hours. Secondly, and perhaps more pressingly, the family I was staying with were forced to vacate because the father's debtors had threatened to kidnap his daughter.
-So I get an airbnb about a block from where my new roommate lives so that she can head over easily when she gets the chance. That is where I am now. It's a little over ₹600 a night. I'm pretty much stuck here until she manages to escape and we manage to get a place, although I have other people working on it as well. Frankly this suits me fine. I'm tired. I've had basically no downtime in like two months. The food here'a fucking fantastic. If I can spend a few days just stuffing my face with ₹40 beef biryani and momos and gain back the weight I lost by having indigestion for six straight months then fuck me up.
Compounding issues is the fact that my computer broke. Fortunately it's under warranty but I had to type this on an mp3 player and it took two hours good night.
ON MONEY:
I need some. If I raise €50, I'll be fine. If I raise €100, I'll be comfortable. Assuming the Apple store doesn't blindside me tomorrow. I'm really hoping for €60 or more.

Is what my car insurance company doing legal?
I am in the process of purchasing a house. I received a quote from the insurance company I picked. And they said they could lower it even more if we add our 2 cars on. So they checked, and their offer for insurance on our cars was lower then what we are paying now. So saving us even more money. I went in, signed the papers for both auto's and the homeowners and was happy. They cancelled my previous auto insurance policies, and charged me my first month. Now, a week later, they are saying due to my previous car being stolen two years ago they can no longer offer me my 100 comprehensive deductible. They can only offer me a 1000 dollar deductible and if I choose not to accept they will cancel my auto insurance. This if frustrating considering my other insurance which wasn't bad to begin with has already been cancelled and I have already been charged my first month so if I don't accept I will have no insurance and my homeowners policy will go up in price. Sorry for the long explanation. I just don't think they should be able to get you in then change things up on you. Is there any law against that? Thanks for your help!!!""

What is a reasonable price for a teen's first car?
I'm hoping to get my license soon, but figure, there isn't a whole lot I can do with it without a car of my own. I'm really not sure how low the prices of cars get without being a piece of junk. I live on the edge of Brampton, Ontario, very close to where the farms start (literally almost on the edge of Brampton). I will be driving for 2 or 3 days a week for pleasure. Can you change health insurance before surgery?
I have an Anthem individual health plan. It's kind of expensive but I haven't been working and really wanted to have health insurance. I just started a full-time job that offers health insurance benefits. They offer Anthem insurance similar to what I already have just at a much cheaper cost to me but I'll probably have to get a new policy number. I'm having breast reduction the 2nd week of August and I've already received approval from my insurance company for them to pay. However I want to get insurance with my job but I only have 30 days from the start of employment to enroll in their plan. I'll be calling Anthem next week to see how this will affect my surgery but what do you all think? Is it possible to change policies before a surgery that's already been approved? I don't want to miss the open enrollment with my company but I also don't want to risk having to cancel my surgery. Thanks!

How much damage will the other drivers insurance have to pay?
My son was involved in a collision this morning. The driver of the other vehicle pulled out right in front of him and he rear-ended them. The driver of the other vehicle was cited for failure to yield and the state trooper that handled the accident said that the collision was unavoidable on my sons part. The question concerning me is that my son did not pay anything for the car he was driving because it was given to him by my daughter. The car has a salvage title because it had apparently been totalled before but had been restored. The car probably would not be worth very much even had it never been in an accident because it is a 1986 year model Pontiac 6000. Now he is without transportation unless I provide it. Will they only be required to pay a salvage price for damages or what?

Can a 16 year old male afford a Mustang with a V8( GT or LX)?
I've discussed getting a mustang to my family and friends for quite a while now. I know the downsides, high insurance, bad gas mileage, and too much power(according to my parents). I'm a big fan of the foxbody('79-'93) mustangs and I also really want a V8 and I also want stick if that matters. The way I see it, I'm going to pay a lot for insurance no matter what, so why not pay a little bit more and pay for the car I really want. It doesn't matter if its an LX or GT even though I've heard that LX's are cheaper, but how much cheaper. I've looked around for answers to this question and all I've seen are responses that tell me either that its stupid to get a Mustang or I find answers that have links for sites that will tell me. I just want a good answer and possibly how much insurance will cost me. I only want minimum coverage and it will be on my mom's policy. Also, one more question, how much cheaper do you believe a '90's Honda Civic(2 door sedan) would cost me in comparision to a V8 Mustang? Thanks for any responses, Aaron.""

My wife is pregnant. Due date: 9/10/09. Our COBRA health insurance expires on 7/18/09. What to do?
Our insurance expires before the due date. NO PROBLEM. We're getting a HIPAA guarantee issue plan. Here's the question: Our insurance expires on the 18th, but HMO's don't start until the 1st of the month. This would leave a 2 week gap where we wouldn't have coverage. We can't start a HIPAA HMO on July 1, because you have to expire all 18months of COBRA before you're eligible for a HIPAA guarantee issue plan. Chances are it'd be ok waiting until 8/1 to begin our new HIPAA plan, but if my wife went into early labor, it would be a very, very bad situation. PPO's start on the 1st, and sometimes the 15th. Same problem. What should we do? We'd prefer to not have a gap in our coverage.""

Five Last-Minute Tax Tips (from someone new to taxes!)
As most of you know I am quite new to taxes in the U.S, having moved here from England only three years ago (wow, it’s gone quickly!). Taxes compared to the U.K. are very different and by this I mean the types of taxes, where you pay them to, how deductions are made and the tax year dates. TurboTax invited me to partner with them and try out their new TurboTax Live where you can one-way video chat with a real life CPA or Enrollled agent for advice – you can see them, but they can’t see you. You also get a final review before you submit your taxes electronically. After trying out the service, and given there isn’t long to go until the tax deadline (it’s April 17th this year!), I thought I would share five things that I learned from doing my taxes:
1. Don’t hack your taxes!
If I don’t know something I tend to type in the question to a search engine. However, if you don’t understand something when it comes to taxes this isn’t always the best approach – in fact, it can confuse you more! When you are tight on time or hit a wall of confusion, why not simply ask a real-life expert instead? I loved using TurboTax Live this year because as a relative newcomer to the U.S, I was confused by the new-to-me tax processes. I just needed to speak to a real person, who I knew I could trust. This is exactly what TurboTax Live offers: it lets you speak to a real person who is a CPA or EA to ask any questions you may have. They can even go through your return with you before you submit to make sure everything is a-ok – for my Heartmate and I that peace of mind was so reassuring when it is only our third year of doing taxes in the U.S. What surprised me was how nice the person was that helped me. We bought a house this year and we had literally no clue what deductions we needed to make or what forms we needed to complete. She took the time to explain the parts of the tax return related to our situation and also how the change of address would affect the local taxes we have to pay. You could tell she wasn’t following a script but rather was a real person giving honest advice and guidance. The best thing is you don’t have to leave your house, it is all done through TurboTax in a video chat – the best! 2. Use automatic import services to save you time
One thing I didn’t do until this year was use automatic import services., if you are employed and get a W2, TurboTax allows you to electronically import data from many employers and financial institutions. I love when technology actually works and saving you time from data entry. This helps so much because it is so easy to misplace a form, especially if, like me, you move a lot or you aren’t that sure what is important and what is not. There’s nothing more frustrating than when you can’t find that one sheet of paper you need, right? Using an online service can save so much time as it allows you to search for this data electronically.
3. Don’t forget deductions
After moving from the U.K. to the USA I discovered that there are differences in which After moving from the U.K. to the U.S I discovered that there are differences in which deductions you can take. Here are a few that I learned:
– Charitable donations, even clothing and goods can count, just make sure to get a receipt from the charity for your donation; TurboTax ItsDeductible also allows you to accurately track and value your donations year round and transfer them to your tax return. – Dedicated space in your home which you use for work may be a valid deduction; – IRA contributions (so make sure to think about retirement) – I learned that you can contribute to your IRA up until the tax deadline (April 17th this year) and deduct the contribution on your 2017 taxes. – Get a mileage app for your phone and record all those business miles you do. There are lots of apps out there which will track your mileage automatically for you using GPS, including QuickBooks Self-Employed.
I also found this super helpful post from the experts at TurboTax on some of the little known deductions that you may qualify for on your 2017 taxes.4. The sooner you do it, the sooner you get your refund!
Life is busy, right? I used to find that I kept putting off doing my taxes – guilty as charged! I would mean to do them but then a work project came up or a friend would invite me to do something and before I know it, it was March and I still hadn’t done them! The one thing I have found that motivates my husband and I is that the sooner we do our taxes the sooner we get our tax refund. That means we can then book a holiday or buy something new for the house. Having something to look forward to really motivates us to get that tax return done. Plus, it’s like that old saying that a dog’s bark is worse that its bite: often the thought of taxes is worse than actually doing them. Especially this year, as having a live CPA or EA available from the comfort of our own home meant that we could ask questions if we got stuck. That meant we didn’t give up, instead we had someone to ask that could get us back on track and so we completed our taxes so much quicker. And we maybe getting a refund sooner!
5. Make simple changes for next year.
I won’t lie to you, I found the first year of doing taxes in the US hard because I wasn’t helping myself accomplish the task. I now know that there are so many simple things you can do to make it easier. Here are a couple we do. I have a drawer in my office just for paperwork and in there I have three folders. The first one is for tax deductions receipts – every time we come home we put any receipts we can deduct from our taxes into the paper folder. We change this folder once a month, so the receipts stay somewhat neat! The second folder is for our bank statements and credit card statements. Lastly, we have a folder for any tax documents. I learned this the hard way as the first year when we couldn’t find our health insurance tax form, it took such a long time to get a replacement, so having a folder for all these tax forms was really useful this year!
I hope these tips were useful – do you have any tips that you can share with me?// Posted in partnership with TurboTax. All views my own. Thanks for supporting the brands that enable me to run Bright.Bazaar.

5 concepts that can soothe our anxious minds
An unfortunate truth that modern science tells us is- despite our ability of being able to change our cognition, it takes a long time for that change to come in effect. For example- if you’ve been anxious since childhood, a regular meditation practice can and will change your brain, however, for that change to be reflected in behavior, it will take a much longer time.
To some extent, that makes sense. How can years of anxiety (formed by genetics and/or environmental factors) be immediately replaced by serenity through just a couple of years of meditation?
For physiology to reflect on behavior, it takes time and constant practice. Andy Puddicombe, buddhist monk and founder of the meditation app Headspace insists on something in his guided meditations- that, to incorporate mindfulness in our everyday lives, above everything, one needs deliberate practice of labeling distractions, and of course- of meditation.
When things don’t go as planned, its much easier for our brains to fall back on past patterns- its just lesser work. So, if you realize you forgot your wallet in the club, of course you’re going to feel anxious if you’ve been anxious most your life. So,that moment between stimulus (realizing you forgot your wallet) and reaction (panic), your initial reaction, unfortunately, will be guided by your past behavior.
That said, there are concepts we can use to soothe our initial reactions. We can, in a very real sense, use traditional and modern practices to attain serenity.
Note- This post is in no way trying to suggest that meditation is a waste of time. Despite the anxious initial reaction, a serial meditator will be better able to handle the situation better as compared to someone who has never sat in silence to observe her thoughts or feelings.
Concept #1: Love and Kindness Meditation
In the Tim Ferris Show, Sharon Shalzberg, the renowned meditation teacher spoke about loving kindness meditation, a critical component of meditative exercises. During the conversation, to get an idea of what this component entails, Tim shared a story of an exercise he did and the massive impact it had on him.
In it, everyday before winding down, he wished peace and all the love and kindness to two people. As simple as it sounds, he shared how this ridiculously easy habit made him incredibly happy. To uncover this mystery, Sharon shared her insights on the philosophy behind love and kindness meditation.
She stated that our lives are centered around what we pay attention to. Most of the time, the person we’re most attentive about, is us. And our attention, further, shapes our thoughts and feelings. So, for example, if you received a suspicious email from your boss about your performance, the more you pay attention to it, every time you speak to her, everything she says or does will hint you towards that email.
Soon enough, your attention on your problems will color your thoughts and feelings.
Love and kindness meditation helps flip our attention towards other people- that barista who wished you have a good day, or even that dog who licked your fingers as you patted him. Once we start paying attention to others and wish them love and kindness, there is a sense of space that we create for ourselves. We no longer feel trapped by that email. Further, that space we just created helps us deal with our problems. We can finally calm down and think about what we can do in our control to make this situation better.
Additionally, there’s a sense of realization that comes with paying attention to others- that, we’re not the only ones going through problems. We’re all struggling, we’re all trying to make it.
So, the next time you feel extremely anxious about a situation, try to think about two people and wish them all the love and kindness in the world.
Concept #2: Short Assignments
I was introduced to this concept for the first time by Anne Lamott, in her famous book about writing- bird by bird. In that context, short assignments were used to break down complex tasks (like writing a book) to approachable simpler ones- writing the preface (for example).
However, soon enough, I started applying that mindset to everything in life- at work and especially if I was having a shitty day. This helped me approach my daily endeavors in a more realistic manner. It gave me a better picture of what the process looked like- from the overall goal to specific tasks.
Now, how can this help us get serenity?
Think about any situation that can provoke anxiety. Let’s go with the wallet example- imagine its a Friday night, you get back home, ready and tired to hit the bed and suddenly realize that your wallet is nowhere to be found.
More typically, if you’re anything like me, your mind will start imagining the worst case scenarios- your checking account dropping down to zero, someone becoming aware of who you are and where you live, and the list goes on and on. The heart, to make things worse, will feel intense anxiety, making it next to impossible for you to think straight.
Now, let’s apply this concept by asking ourselves a question- how can we break this down? Meaning- to achieve the goal of retrieving wallet, how can I break this down into simpler, more manageable tasks.
I know what you’re thinking- dude, I just lost my fucking wallet. You think I’m going to be in the right mindset to “break this down”?
And you’re right- its really hard to do rationalize when anxiety is at its peak. However, the first thing you’re likely to do is go back to that bar and look for it. Great- that’s the first step in the process. On your way to the club, this concept helps us simply jot down contingency steps. That is- what can you do if you cannot find your wallet?
Well, the first thing you can do is go to your banking app and lock your cards. So, your worst fear of someone taking all your money is taken care of. Next, if you don’t end up finding your wallet at the bar, you can go to the police to file a report- so you don’t have to worry about identity theft.
The point is, when we want to accomplish something that is partially outside our control, we need to, in a very real sense, try our best to break down our efforts into manageable chunks.
As long as we take care of things in our control, we can feel rest assured that we did everything in our power.
The rest, as Marcus Aurelius says- take it as it comes.
Concept #3 Circle of Control
Our lives today, for most part, are intertwined with those of others.
To survive and thrive in the competition that is capitalism, we need to rely on other people and their talents. It doesn’t matter how great your idea looks on paper, to build a prototype, you need to make sure your design department has sufficient bandwidth that week.
And although this gives us a pedestal to achieve beyond our wildest dreams, it does have a downside- that, now, more than ever, not everything is in our control.
If we need to get something done, its more likely that we’re going to be dealing with other people. In the midst of chaos, forgetting this can cause us a lot of anxiety. Think about that wallet example again- as much as we’d want all of our cards and money back, unfortunately, it’s beyond our control.
That said, however, what we can definitely do is go look for it, and (if necessary) lock our cards and file a report to avoid other consequences. Therefore, distinguishing between what is in our control and what’s not, especially when we’re feeling anxious, can help us sustain serenity.
When we focus on things in our control, we’re more likely to be successful at achieving them. We stop wasting precious time worrying about the what- if’s and zero in on making sure we do everything from our end.
That is when, despite being in a bad situation, we can feel peaceful- since, we’ve done everything we could.
Concept #4 View from Above
Another stoic concept, the view from above mindset entails literally looking at the world as a whole and realizing that in the scheme of things, no human life is significant. The point isn’t to take this existentially, instead, it’s to let it act as a gentle reminder that ego, pride, our troubles, if viewed from the top- don’t matter.
Here’s Marcus Aurelius in his journal Meditations:
Constantly reflect on how swiftly all that exists and is coming to be is swept past us and disappears from sight. For substance is like a river in perpetual flow, and its activities are ever changing, and its causes infinite in their variations, and hardly anything at all stands still; and ever at our side is the immeasurable span of the past and the yawning gulf of the future, into which all things vanish away. Then how is he not a fool who in the midst of all this is puffed up with pride, or tormented, or bewails his lot as though his troubles will endure for any great while? (5.23)
There are situations where despite our best efforts, hopes, and intentions, there is nothing we can do to make things better.
You failed a class in senior year, which delays your graduation date. Your parents fight daily and it doesn’t seem like either party is going to make a mature decision. Notice- that, all of these, to a greater extent, are out of your control. There is absolutely nothing you can do, from your end to make situations like these better.
And, it’s rather unfortunate that we’re bothered by things outside of our control. In fact, to some extent, that is what makes us human, doesn’t it? Its the fact that we’re deeply impacted by actions of people who we love.
That said, this concept makes all of this look trivial. It makes us realize that the unfairness that we deal with everyday, and the unfortunate realities that we dread (death, for example) are way beyond us. They have been affecting people for eons, but at the end of the day, all of this chaos doesn’t really matter.
Life, as we all know, does and always will go on.
If you haven’t seen the view from above video, I recommend you check it out here.
Concept #5 Watching your Thoughts and Feelings
Its no surprise that our minds are incredibly fragile.
For example- if someone tells us not to think about something, its more likely that we will think about it.
And typically, the unfortunate myth that most of us live with is that we are our thoughts and feelings. In fact, the French philosopher Rene Descartes is famous for his quote- I think therefore I am.  And, if we follow that mindset, every time we think or feel something that is not pleasant, the natural tendency is to walk away from that thought or feeling.
And that’s what creates chaos.
We think we can control our minds without exercising them (hint- meditation).
The way we approach thinking, in reality, has changed over time.
In an episode of Invisibilia (a podcast that discusses invisible forces that control human behavior and shape ideas), host Alix Spiegel and Hanna Rosin discuss the secret history of thought- three approaches of looking at thought, all of which have been influenced by time.
Approach #1: Thoughts have meaning Approach #2: Thoughts shouldn’t be taken seriously, they should be challenged through reality Approach #3: Most of our thoughts are nonsense and don’t deserve our attention. By watching them without judgement, we can stop becoming them
Each of these has its own separate story. If you’re interested, I highly recommend listening to the episode.
Now, there’s no point in rejecting any of these approaches. Each one of them can be used in different scenarios. That said, in case of an anxious mind, which approach can help us feel better about our anxiety provoking situations?
Let’s go back to loosing our wallets. In that case, approach #1 would entail we look deep into that scary thought that someone is going to steal all of our money. Approach #2 would demand that we challenge that thought with reality. None of these will help us in that exact moment when all we can feel is our heart beating faster and faster due to anxiety.
Approach #3 would be interesting. This would mean we simply watch our anxious thoughts and feelings without any judgement. This will help us become separated from them, so, we can focus on doing things in our control.
Side Note- Meditation can help you have a better experience if you do end up approaching your thoughts by watching them without any judgement. In fact, one of the best analogies I’ve known about this concept is from the Meditation app Headspace, said by the founder and monk Andy Puddicombe: Watching your thoughts and feelings is like sitting by a busy road and watching the cars. You’re not reacting to them, you’re not judging them. You’re simply watching.
If you’re interested in learning more about Meditation, I recommend you check out this and this post.
Over To You
Its rather unfortunate that today, given the fast paced world, there are many things outside of our control that can provoke our monkey mind. If you’re interested to learn more about that, I recommend you read this book by The School of Life.
That said, having these tools in mind can help us attain serenity when its most needed- during times of chaos.
Seneca said it the best when he commented on the nature of suffering in imagination vs in reality- we suffer more in imagination than in reality.
So, let’s learn to take ourselves less seriously, let’s learn to let self-awareness spearhead our conquest of attaining peace and calm.

Seniors Can Now Lower the Potential of Identity Theft with MySSA
View Original Article Here: Seniors Can Now Lower the Potential of Identity Theft with MySSA
Metlife Mature Market Institute estimates that senior citizens lose a minimum of $2.9 billion a year to identity thieves. There are several ways a criminal can steal someone’s identity, and elders were particularly susceptible to a few tactics.
One of the more common ways in which seniors’ identities become compromised is through the mail. For instance, any criminal can easily access an elderly victim’s mail which may contain sensitive information such as social security checks or credit card statements.
Introducing the My Social Security Account
Creating a My Social Security Account is one of the first steps everyone should take in preventing future identity theft.
Even if you’re a few years from collecting social security, the account will allow you to access your Social Security Statement, obtain estimates of your future benefits, and verify your earnings. You can even request a replacement social security card from the comfort of your own home.
Those who already receive benefits can use their MySSA account to get proof of their benefits, change contact information, change direct deposit information, and replace a lost or stolen Medicare Card. A My Social Security Account provides more than just security. It provides an easy way to access necessary information without tedious steps.
Senior Citizens & Identity Theft Risk
Identity theft occurs when a criminal accesses someone’s personal information and uses it to steal money from their victim. Thieves can clean out bank accounts and ruin credit with only a few pieces of identifying information.
Seniors are at the greatest risk of having their identity stolen. People were more trustworthy when they were growing up. Seniors are more likely to think that the stranger on the phone has their best interest in mind, and are less liable to be suspicious.
Seniors often have a considerable amount of savings compared to the rest of us, which means they are one of the more lucrative targets for identity thieves. Adults over 50 control at least 70% of the national household net worth. Seniors are especially vulnerable and offer a large sum of money to those who want to take advantage of them, which makes them a perfect target for identity criminals.
Online Phishing
Identity theft has been a concern for a long time, and the methods criminals use are developing. Online identity theft is becoming an increasing worry, especially among elderly users who aren’t as computer literate.
Online thieves often send spam emails to their victims asking for personal information. These emails may appear to come from a reputable source, such as Amazon or eBay, but they’re a criminal impersonating a company.
Online Exposure
Sometimes criminals can gain access to information through insecure websites. Seniors may not be as confident on the computer as the rest of the population. They are more likely to click on suspicious links and visit unsafe websites. When this is the case, the victim may not be aware that they put their identifying information at risk before it’s too late.
Fraudulent Phone Calls
Another way criminals get hold of personal information is through phone calls. Criminals specifically target seniors over the phone due to their trusting nature and lack of online presence.
There are several ways a criminal can extract information over the phone. Sometimes they pretend to be the IRS, other times they’ll pretend to represent a charity. Seniors are trusting, so it’s far more likely that they’ll divulge some of their personal information for a chance to help a worthy cause.
The phone calls seniors receive make it clear that they are the ones who criminals target at a larger rate. After the age of 60, people are more likely to receive scam phone calls. They could be offering assistance on a computer, telling you they can reduce your pain, or extorting money out of you by telling you you’re in debt to the IRS. Remember, no legitimate organization will require that you offer any personal information over the phone.
Credit Card Theft
Physical theft has never changed, and the prospect of thieves stealing seniors’ credit cards and wallets are always a concern. A person may not even notice that someone stole their credit card if it was a card they barely use. Theft has always been a slight fear for those who are older, but criminals are making it, so they don’t even have to steal your wallet anymore.
Lately, criminals have made it even easier to take their victim’s information. They no longer have to steal the physical card to take the information. Identity thieves place small scanning devices on credit card machines, allowing them to take the number and run up a tab before anyone notices.
Mail Scams
Just because a senior isn’t active online doesn’t mean identity thieves can't target them by the “phishing” method. Criminals use regular mail to accomplish the same results as they do online.
The thieves send their victims letters that appear to be from a reputable source – somewhere like a bank or doctor’s office. These letters will request some personal information, and anyone who sends something back to these thieves will usually end up losing a considerable amount of information
Mail Theft
Thieves stealing information from the mail has been a problem for as long as identity theft has been around. This method is one of the oldest, and criminals still use it. Seniors are especially susceptible to mail theft because they frequently receive checks and statements that contain sensitive information.
There are several ways in which criminals will steal mail. They can steal it right out of a mailbox, or they can go dumpster-diving to look for documents containing social security numbers and account information. Since seniors usually have a lot more money saved-up, they are one of the best victims for identity thieves who use this method.
Thieves who steal mail can victimize the elderly in a few ways. They can cash checks on the victim’s behalf, but one of the more common methods thieves use is to take the personal information off of the documents they find in the trash. Social Security checks and statements are of specific concern, as these offer multiple forms of identifying information.
Using the information gathered off of a Social Security Statement, thieves can make a profit in various ways. They can bill insurance companies for services, file taxes under the victim’s name, and many other means of making money. These thieves can even target a person after they have died, using the deceased’s information to collect checks and benefits.
A MySSA Account Can Prevent Senior ID Theft
As a whole, seniors are the most vulnerable to mail theft. Computers may not come as second-nature to senior citizens who prefer to receive information in paper form. Unfortunately, receiving paper copies of your Social Security Statement puts you at extreme risk of having your identity compromised by criminals.
Creating a MySSA account is one of the best ways to ensure your identity is well protected. In your account, you can access your Social Security Statement without receiving any mail. This feature eliminates the threat of criminals stealing the mail and using it for their own gain.
For additional security, the My Social Security Account now requires a two-step verification process, where the user is sent a one-time security code when they log in.
On top of the security, the My Social Security Account provides, there are also several features that will make future interactions much simpler. You won’t have to call or send a letter to change any of your preferences. Just log on and make the changes yourself.
The best form of protection from identity theft is to remove the tools that criminals use. Viewing your Social Security online instead of on-paper gives thieves one less way to steal your identity.
How to Create an Online Social Security Account
Creating a MySSA account couldn’t be simpler than it already is. It’s a secure way to ensure that your information is safe and out of the hands of criminals who want to steal from you.
You will provide some of your information to ensure that more of your information isn’t compromised. Follow these simple Social Security account setup steps to protect yourself against people with malicious intent.

[rules:  repost.  always post the rules. answer the questions asked, then write 11 new ones. tag 11 people to answer your questions, as well as the person who tagged you]
Tagged by @thedalishbloodmage. Tagging everyone because I just chugged half a bottle of wine. 1) What was the last movie you saw? Was it any good? The last movie I saw in cinema was Wonder Woman. I went to go and see it with my mom, which was sort of odd—my mom and I don’t typically agree on movies and that sort of thing so we don’t often go and see them together. However, I did enjoy it. It was awfully nice to see David Thewlis in a big role again. Even though there were some flaws (nothing is perfect or exempt from analysis!), I’ll definitely watch it again and may even purchase a physical copy.
2) Is there a genre of books you like the most? What about when it comes to video games? This is an interesting question. For me, at least, it really depends on what an author is trying to accomplish. I’ve always been a voracious reader and will read nearly anything I can get my hands on. What it really boils down to whether or not the book or video game is an effective medium for whatever literature is being composed. For me, satire and world-building is incredibly ineffective when placed in a book only format. It takes a while for me to get into it, if I can manage to at all. As far as videogames go, I’m down for almost anything. My undergrad program treated their undergrads as if they were grad students and we had to essentially write thesis arguments and pick thesis projects. Mine was videogames as ultimate forms of literature and my big end project was over the original Mass Effect trilogy. My main downfall with videogames is that I’m pretty cock-eyed so I don’t have the best depth perception and I get motion sick super easy. As long as I don’t get sick, I’ll usually give any game a chance. 3) Is there something that everyone hates that you love, like a book or a movie that bombed? There are definitely movie and book and videogame characters and pairings that Tumblr seems to truly hate that I really like. However, I tend not to take Tumblr seriously on some things because I think that any and all sorts of social media sites are the worst kind of echo chambers. I mean, it doesn’t keep me from having them or using them for my own means but I’m still aware of it. I can’t really think of any books or movies off the top of my head, but what I can think of is food. I absolutely adore black licorice—-especially strong black licorice—-and salted black licorice. Some of this is likely a cultural thing, but some of it definitely isn’t. I don’t have too much of a sweet tooth, but I will down an entire package of salmiakki faster than you can blink. 4) Do you have a special hobby? If so, what is it? I tend to always need something creative to do with my hands, or I’ll get bored and get myself into trouble. Anything artistic, I probably do. I sew, crochet, draw, cosplay, paint, and so on. Lately I’ve been coloring in adult coloring books, but before I did summer school for work, I was on a drawing and colored pencil kick. 5) Outside of BioWare games, what are some of your favorites? I’ll always have a soft spot for BioWare. The first game with a campaign that I ever remember “beating” (really, my uncle beat it and handed me a mouse that wasn’t plugged in while he played because I was about four) was Bauldur’s Gate. I also love Bethesda games. Morrowind was the first big RPG that I ever really got into. I like a lot of tabletop RPGs too, but I haven’t played them in ages and likely wouldn’t remember anything. I like card and board games. As a kid, I played a lot of Reader Rabbit and Jump Start games. They were educational and since both my parents are teachers, I’m fairly certain they got them from their schools. I also played a lot of Zoo Tycoon and turn-based civilization building games, like 1602 AD and Pharoah. 6) When roleplaying, is there anything else you do like listening to music or drinking something in particular? Not particularly, no. I’ve always been more of an opportunistic writer—doing things quickly or in-between tasks. The most that can be said is that I have to be entirely comfortable and sort of in a mode where my brain is refreshing and not actually trying to work. That being said, the majority of my writing tends to come out when I’m watching something stupid on Netflix or when I’m in bed and trying to fall asleep. 7) If you could choose between mind reading and teleportation, which would you choose and why? Teleportation, definitely. I could go see friends and travel for no cost and when it was time for bed I could just go home. Also, I would have absolutely no qualms about teleporting into a bank vault and getting enough cash to pay off my student loan debt, tuition for grad school, my sister’s and parents’ student loan debt, replace my car with a decent used one, and move out or even to a different city. I would literally be a world class thief in order to pay off debt, keep myself mildly comfortable, and then likely to donate money to no-kill animal shelters and charities. 8) Do you like ancient mythology? If so, what culture is your favorite? I think it would be more appropriate to ask what I don’t like. In general, I’ve never been incredibly fond of ancient Roman or Greek mythology. I find it to be far too overdone. My favorites overall are likely Egyptian, Norse, and Slavic. There are several kinds of myths that I have an overall fondness for. I especially like mermaid and siren myths. Most kinds of mythologies have some variation on fae or elven courts, and I enjoy those as well. And, as should surprise absolutely no one, I have a huge soft spot for tricksters. 9) If you could meet anyone, alive or dead, who would it be and why? That’s a damn good question, and I nearly always change my mind each time I’m asked it. There are so many interesting historical figures that I would love to meet, good and bad, that I’m not sure I could choose just one. The top of the list includes more historical figures (Thoreau, Whitman, Poe, Hatshepsut, Elizabeth I, Lovecraft, Tesla, Jefferson) than live people (Rowling, Jennifer Hale). The people who I would like to meet generally are people that I would like to actually sit down and spend time with. They're people I've admired or found fascinating since I was young. There are, of course, two people who have passed in my personal life who I would give anything to see one last time. I would like to see my great grandma, who passed when I was in eighth grade, and tell her that I managed to get through college and that I have a decent job---she was so, so fond of all her grandkids and great-grandkids and she wanted to see us all go to college so badly. She was older when she went and I'm okay with that now, but she was such a nice lady and I think she'd be just so pleased. The other person I'd like to see would be my second momma who passed away from leukemia not even a year ago---I had known her since I was five and she was such a tough woman and never put up with my shit and pushed me to do my best and she was such a good, proud person. The job I had at the time wouldn't give me time off when I finally got word that she was in hospice care or when she passed and I asked to go to the funeral. She did get a college graduation invite and even though she didn't get to actually see me in person, she did get to see the live stream. I never really got to say goodbye or give her a hug or anything, and I know she basically considered me her kid.
10) What about your blog is your favorite thing you've done?
I have a lot of headcanon that I haven't published yet. I need to get on that. There's one in particular, about elves and elvhen and footwear, that I really like.
Roleplay on Tumblr is a lot different than on other sites, which is interesting.
I like the friends I've made on here most of all. I know that is awfully altruistic, but I do value them immensely.
11) What drew you into roleplay? What made you stay?
Honestly? I was bored.
I've been roleplaying off and on since Xanga and GaiaOnline, which is hella sad.
As for what drew me to Solas? Honestly, when I started I hadn't even finished a playthrough where I had romanced him yet. A friend jokingly said that he and I have quite a bit in common so I started sort of as a laugh.
Joke was on me, I suppose. They were right---Solas and I do have a lot in common, which has made writing for him a deliciously difficult challenge---and I'm still here two years later.
Don't get me wrong, I've learned a lot about myself while writing for Solas. It is immensely relaxing to write as him. Which has helped me stick around, too.
Questions:
1) who?
2) what?
3) when?
4) where?
5) why?
6) how?
7) Lannisters or Starks?
8) Who did 9/11?
9) Tell me about it, stud.
10) How would you do it?
11) Who was phone?
