HI HI HI, I have an emergency, and hopefully, you can help. I'm having trouble picking an outfit for my show. I'm either doing a white shirt and black shorts, Black crop top and biker shorts, or a black romper plus an oversized shirts. I know white and black are classic 1975 but I was thinking of doing something fun and maybe brown for chocolate, pink for Ilwys, yellow for noacf.

Hmmm this is excellent. I’m not sure how fashion-forward I am but I feel like if you started with a black and/or white base and then added light or Neon Pink or the Notes yellow then you’d kinda have a pretty great 1975-esque outfit? Or even the very specific shade of navy blue they did for BFIAFL? Like maybe a classic button up white shirt with some stripes or accessories that add pops of color? I mean when is your show? Do we have time to shop/ look into options to create a look? Or are we working with what we’ve got ?

If it’s the latter, I think if you have a dark wash denim jeans you could probably get the blue of BFIAFL? and then add black and white to it? Potentially even do your nails? I’m sure nail polish in the ILIWYS and NOACF shades are relatively easy to find. If you also wanna put stuff in your hair with those colors?

Idk where you are cuz biker shorts are sounding too cold for October/ Nov? Unless you’re somewhere that doesn’t get too cold haha.

You could thrift a lot of pieces too. Like a retro vest to wear over a white button-up with black shorts/ pants. Doc martens are easy to find second hand if you don’t have a pair already. Or look for a lacy light pink top maybe? Like you could even wear the white button-up open over it. Let me see if I can find example images.

I'd like to do a punk rock Kiki cosplay from Kikis delivery service (inspiration being my bright red doc martens and navy blue dress) and I'm curious what else I could add to it. I'd wear a leather jacket, but this will be for a-kon in Dallas, TX in June and I don't really want to cook myself alive.

Hello there!

This sounds like an amazing cosplay idea, by the way.

What I would do is bring the leather jacket and put it on for photos or when indoors. If it has a little loop under the collar, you can also hook it onto your finger and sling it over your shoulder (and look badass in the process), which shows off the jacket but you don’t have to wear it.

Don’t wear it while walking around a lot, especially outdoors. Drink plenty of water, and take frequent rests. If you feel the need to bring a battery-powered fan or some cooling packs, do so. I’d also recommend wearing sweat-wicking underwear if you can, which should help you to feel cooler.

As for other ideas, you can always add typical “punk” type accessories -- maybe add spikes or studs (putting the bow on a spiked headband would be cool), ripped fishnets, etc. I’d look around at other punk AU designs for other series to get some ideas of how people make things read both “punk” and “[insert series].” Also, look at actual punks for inspiration, of course! Choose what direction you want to go with it in terms of style and go from there. Be sure to keep all of Kiki’s identifying traits (blue dress, red shoes, red bow, hairstyle and color) while either changing them to punk versions of those or adding punk elements to them. 

Tricking out her broom somehow might be cool, too -- if you can get away with it, some nails sticking out of it or other added details would really up the effect, though be careful with something like that because it could be dangerous to carry around unless you can find or make fake nails instead of metal ones.
