okay but like i was even more interested in oitnb when they brought in the ice detention centre. not because i'm at all okay with ice, i mean my parents are immigrants so fuck that lmao, but because i wanted to see how they show would tackle it. and i was alright with it but i also had my issues with it. like when shani was introduced and they gave us a bit of her back story as to why she couldn't be in egypt. is that a very real issue? yes absolutely. is it also problematic to assume that every single egyptian/muslim/middle eastern/brown person not living in the west is going to be a giant bigot? yea i think it is. my whole life, people would just assume i'm not okay with certain things because i'm brown so they assume i've gotta also be a very very conservative muslim (which i was raised in islam but i am no longer muslim).
the thing that kinda gave me a weird vibe when she was explaining all of this is when she said something like "these things are normal in my culture" when she told nicky what happened when her family realized she may be gay. it feels like a very common misconception that these things are part of that culture or any (in this instance) middle eastern/south asian culture. let's not forget that the west going about things the way that they did essentially inspired other places to do fucked up shit. oh yea and also COLONIZATION.
look i know it's just a show and i'm not even necessarily mad. i guess i've just been thinking about it for a few days since i seen the episode and wanted to get it out lol
