My Top Songs [2020]

Hi all!

As 2020 comes to an end (thank whatever higher power there is), I wanted to share a list of my favorite songs! (the following are songs RELEASED this year) (I’ve included a list of songs that I heard this year, but weren’t released in 2020, after it). These are mostly korean/chinese.

Alright, this is in NO particular order, just my favorites. I’ve mostly included one song from a group/solo act and added their other great releases in description. It is mostly music that I listened to, so if your favs are not here, feel free to rec me good music! ENJOY!

Black swan(orchestral version) by BTS

BTS had a great year musically. 2 korean albums, 1 japanese and lots of solo stuff. My most played songs are Dynamite (listen, she did what she had to do), Stay Gold (if gold had a sound, this would be it), Black Swan, Blue and Grey (i live for melancholy), Life Goes On (spring day’s successor), Filter(park jimin is a threat), Friends (my feels!), Louder than bombs (TROYE SIVAN), UGH (murder music), 00:00, Moon (jin solos are beautiful always) and Your Eyes Tell (honestly, show me one bad japanese single, i dare you).

Ghosting by TXT

I got into TXT a lot more this year, as opposed to being a casual listener that I was last year. Many people say they have a no-skip discography and I believe it’s true. My most played songs were Blue Hour (i ADORE this song), We Lost the summer, Wishlist, Can’t you see me (the song that made me a stan), Fairy of Shampoo (ethereal), PUMA (choi yeonjun is a threat), Eternally (an ATTACKK!) and their f2020 cover.

Ateez is another group i really got into this year, mesmerized by their performance abilities. My most played : Star 1117 (i’m very soft for this song), To the Beat (a true bop), Inception (holy jongho vocals), One day at a time and Good Lil Boy (does hongjoong ever have a bad rap verse?). Their Black Cat Nero cover also blew me away!! (i’m lowkey obsessed).

God’s menu by Stray Kids

I’ve been keeping an eye on Stray Kids ever since hellevator came out and this is my favourite song by them, so far (yes, i had a heart attack when i first saw Hyunjin). Most Played : Back Door (the beat drop gives me life, the choreo is probably my fav), All in, Easy (do they ever have a bad chorus?), GO LIVE (the beat??!! killer), Another Day (i am a slow jam hoe) and My Universe.

Pacman by eaJ   

I didn’t think it was possible to love him more after day6 but Jae’s solo music has proved me wrong. Yes, i love Pillows (with Keshi) to bits but pacman is my first love. Most Played : It just is (Seori and their golden vocals), LA TRAINS (vocals!!!), Pinocchio (the mv is adorable, the beat is so fun), 50 proof (the vibes man, it's the VIBES) and TRUMAN.

Left & Right by Seventeen

Another group with amazing releases this year, I’m slowly getting into Seventeen more these days. Most Played : Fallin’ Flower (so beautiful, the vocals), 24H (the beat change?!!???), 17 (Joshua, DK and Pink Sweats) and HOME;RUN (this is a brand of fun that is entirely their own).

Not by the moon by GOT7

I am no stranger to GOT7, i’ve liked their music for years now but this is one of their more lyrical releases this year and i adore when GOT7 does this type of music. Most Played : Poison (jackson opens it and the vibes are immaculate), Last Piece (the way the vocals flow into the rap) and Thank You, Sorry.

So Beautiful by DPR IAN

This is literally the first song i’ve heard from this artist, please rec me more. I also adore No Blueberries with DPR LIVE and CL.

Eight by IU, Prod. SUGA

IU is an indisputable vocal queen, and her music always comforts me greatly so when i heard she was having a song produced by Yoongi, i promptly lost my shit. It was everything I expected and more and embodies sorrow and pain with great grace. Give you My Heart from the ‘Crash Landing on you OST’ was also a loved song this year.

Cry for me by TWICE

How do i talk about the queens? TWICE is the group i go to when I want fun music with good vibes but this song has such bad b*tch vibes that i am in love. Most played : More & More (a bop), Don’t call me again, I can’t stop me (i love the way it flows), Handle It (the vocals??? How pretty this song is???) and Say Something (seriously, eyes wide open is an amazing album).

Criminal by Teamin

Where do i start with Lee Taemin? I love almost all his solo stuff. He grabbed me by the neck ever since ‘Move’ and hasn't let go. Criminal is SO taemin that i don't think anyone else could have delivered the concept with such grace and grit. Most Played : 2 Kids (the chorus is so good), Clockwork, Idea (i love the vibe) and Pansy (i'm a ballad hoe).

Maria by Hwasa

Listen, i loved Twit when it came out but i love Maria as her sound so much more. Most Played : I’m bad too (feat. DPR LIVE) (i love the beat, the vibe and the flavor), LMM and Orbit from ‘The King: Eternal Monarch OST’ (as soon as her voice comes in, i loved the song).

Breath by DEAN, Rad Museum, Mokyo

I’m not aware of many DEAN releases this year, please feel free to rec me if I missed any.

Dear my friend by Agust D ft. Kim Jong Wan (NELL)

D-2 was everything expected from the second mixtape off Agust D and yet it brought a fresh wave of singing and melodies, once again proving the man’s production genius. This song is so reminiscent in it’s lyrics and still so real, its my favorite off the record.Other songs I loved : People, Deachwita and What do you think? (i DID love the complete mixtape though).

Given - Taken by Enhypen

Yes, I watched  I-LAND. Given-Taken was a better debut then I expected at first. 10 months (the chorus and beat) and Flicker off their debut album were also played a lot. 

I just want to stay with you by Zion.T

The King: Eternal Monarch was a much awaited drama for a lot of people and it’s OST is one of the best ones this year. Zion.T’s amazing vocals really did an amazing job of expressing the love in the story. Other songs I really liked from this album were Gravity by Kim Jong Wan and the Hydrangea Instrumental by Lee Geon Yeong.

The purge by Jay Park, pH-1, Woodie Gochild, Sik-K, and others.

H1GHER: RED TAPE is my hype album of the year. All artists involved did an amazing job. Seriously, get yourself some bomb ass beats, as a treat. Other loved tracks : Telefono Remix (Woodie Gochild is great at his flavour of delivery), Closed Case and The Arrival.

Soul by Lay (zhang yixing)

Yixing’s album LIT was his best project till date, no arguments. He’s really evolved into such a refined musician, especially with how well he merges traditional chinese instruments into Hip Hop/RnB beats and I adore the vibe of this album. Although the album is great entirely, Soul is my favourite for how softly and prettily it flows. Other loved tracks: Eagle (the BEAT), Fly, Boom (bops on bops on BOPS) and Call My Name.

100 ways by Jackson Wang

It is astounding how well Jackson has formed his own style of music ever since starting off with Papillon. He’s also sort of come into himself as an artist and it has birthed some great music. Other loved tracks : Pretty Please (i love the vibe of the song!) and Should’ve Let Go (ft. JJ Lin).

SUGA’s interlude by Halsey 

Idk how else to explain it but Halsey and Yoongi have great music synergy. There’s something about their song/lyric writing that matches very well and needless to say, I adore the song. Blueberry eyes by MAX is also another great Yoongi collab.

In Your Time by Lee Suhyun

It’s Okay to not be Okay had an OST that was dreamy, gritty and very fairytale-esque, much like the drama itself. Among a bunch of great songs, this one is my favourite. Other loved songs: You’re Cold by Heize (always delivers!), Breath by Sam Kim (OST angel), Hallelujah by Kim Feel (chills!), In Silence by Janet Suhh (literally how angelic is her tone??), I’m your Psycho by Janet Suhh (it’s creepy in a dreamy way) and Brother | Her World | Through the dark Tunnel of time | Butterfly - all amazing instrumentals by Nam Hye Seung and Park Sang Hee (seriously, go listen to the album).

Another great discovery towards the end of the Year, Junny has vocals for DAYS and admirable delivery. Other loved songs: AURA ft. pH-1, edge (this is so hypnotising in it’s beauty) and I will. Please feel welcome to educate me more about this artist!!

Make a Wish by NCT

NCT always provides bops and NCT U is my favourite sub-unit, for their unique style of music, so when they came out with this song I was ready and they delivered! Most Played : 90’s Love  (the old boy band theme was so well done), From Home (i’m a sucker for slow songs), Nectar (yes, i adore WayV’s music), MAD DOG by NCT 127 and Kick It by NCT 127 (this is the flavour of NCT i LOVE).

Zombie by Day6

Day6 has always been in my daily otations and as always, they put out good music after good music. I loved both the original Korean and the English versions of this song (they do rock well, what else is there to say?). Other loved songs : Tick Tock (oh the vocals, the way the beat moves!), Love me or Leave me, Day and Night... actually the whole Album is great, go listen to ‘The Book of us: The Demon’.

Fearless by Ma Di [other chinese songs]

Chinese songs have been a surprisingly pleasant addition to my daily rotation. Fearless from the “Go Ahead” OST takes the top stop because of how well it embodies the struggles of stepping into adulthood, the melody and MaDi’s amazing vocals. Other Chinese songs I loved: Praise for Red Plum Blossoms by Xiao Zhan (the perfect welcoming of spring paired with  such expressive vocals), Remaining Years by Xiao Zhan (Joy of Life OST) and his OST for the Oath of Love.

“Top 10″

Tagged by the very lovely @serenililly to do a top 10 KPop song list thingy and let me tell you I did not follow any guideline whatsoever. I take the title with an ocean of salt.

So this "list" is just me messing with myself more than anything. I usually rotate between Day6, BTS, FTIsland, N.Flying and Stray Kids in my phone so this is just giving me an excuse to find other songs that I've stuffed away in my private yt playlist and listen to them again. I've gone down a rabbit hole...

(if you say that you were cheating with choosing songs and having honourable mentions, I'm basically criminal. There's more than a good 50 songs mentioned in this "list". Put me in a jail cell...)

Be forewarned; I talk a lot, so, everything is under the cut.

TL;DR I shoved all the songs that I really like into one post depite being told it is a top 10 song list. (also I've given up tagging anyone in doing this cause idk who to tag *finger guns*)

Eric Nam - Runaway (Honourable mentions: Love Die Young [I know this one's an english song but god is it good])

First off, let's be real. This song was going to get on this list one way or another. I wrote a FLUFF FIC for JUNGKOOK with this song. It made me write fluff for a guy a I don't even necessarily care to have fluff with. It somehow wrecked me as a person and god does it scare me. It's a romance that I want with my entire heart and I wrote it for someone who isn't my bias in anyway. What can that tell you?

ok but the song is one that I go back to about every week. I can't get sick of it. And if you listen to it with the English version right after it, it becomes such a whiplash. Eric knows how to mess with me.

Day6 - 365247 & Emergency  (Honourable mention: Deep in love, Hi Hello, Dance Dance, Shoot Me)

Look I try to keep it to one song per artist but the Entropy album was a fcking all kill for me. This album would be on number 1 if this was on a top ten album list instead. (If bts hadn't stolen my heart already at the time, Day6 would have been my ult of all time because these boys are hilarious.)

365247 is such a funky tune and I find myself seeking out this song everytime I'm feeling a little spunky. Feels like one of those sexual tension songs to me for some reason but I love it.

Emergency is a bit of a mess but like in the best way. Just the sounds of blaring sirens and heart monitors just, my god. The way the lyrics were paced to fill the theme in even more was so good. What can I say? Like, it was a really well done song. And I am head over heels for it. (also the fact there is a dance for this song is amusing)

FTIsland - Pray (Honourable mentions: Stay, Hello Hello, Falling Star, Memory, Take Me Now, Paper Plane)

*stares down the Japanese releases* Oh god I love those. It was hard to separate them from the Korean releases because the Japan releases were the ones that got me to FT and eventually, K-Pop in general. But then I also remember that there are songs that have a Korean version. As much as I am more familiar with the Japanese versions, the Korean versions are great too.

The reason why I chose Pray as the top song is I guess just the state that I was when it came out. Like, I felt it through my bones and it kind of never left. So whenever I listen to Pray, I have the visceral feeling that I need to scream at a god. I don't but it just relieves it by the end of the song. (also Rock that I can scream to when I actually want to)

Jonghyun - Before our Spring (Honourable mentions: Take the Dive)

Simply known as the song that broke me and put me back together. It's now the song that reminds me that there's more to live for. I don't think I can listen to this song without at least tearing up a little. I'm sorry Winter Angel and thank you.

N.Flying - The Real (Honourable mentions: Hot Potato, Rooftop, 4242)

THE REVIVAL of my darling boys. God how much I had missed them and the return being one of the stupidest mvs I know (not counting anything from norazo or Psy), it was so perfect. And then the follow up being Hot Potato, just N.Flying had such a great revival that really suited them as a group. I always go back to it whenever I need a smile.

Epik High - Born Hater (Honourable mentions: Lullaby for a Cat, People Scare Me)

This one is the only one with no real reason why I picked it. I just really like it and it had a lot of people contibuting to the song.

The Rose - Baby (Honourable metions: She's in the rain, Red)

Back to my band shennanigans (if you haven't noticed the list being almost half bands). The Rose holds a good place in my heart too. With a voice like Sammy boy's, it's had for me to not have them in the back of my head as I listen to songs on desktop.

AKMU - Time and Fallen Leaves (Honourable mentions: Melted, How People Move, Chocolady, Re-Bye)

I listened to this song A LOT when it came out in 2014. Back when I was still in secondary school going through my depressive teen phase (i'm joking, but am I tho). But really this song was what kept me going and not just find a easy route out. It kinda gave me sense of hope. Cause where else do you fall back when all your friends actually really hated you?

BTS (Well duh) - 소우주 (Mikrokosmos) (Honourable mentions: SPRING MF DAY, Magic Shop, Mono, Anything Jimin has put out solo-wise, Dionysus, DDaeng ect.)

Every song since the WINGS era has gotten so strong and well done. And it keeps getting better It's been just so hard to figure out which song is the one I'd pick to listen to always.

I was just about to put Spring day as the top but I remembered Mikrokosmos. Idk what it is about Mikrokosmos but it's found a permanent place in my heart for songs that comfort me the most. It inches Spring day in the top spot of fave. I used to have a playlist with all my comfort songs in one but I accidentally deleted it and im too lazy to recompile it tho.

Another busy week comes to an end.  What a week it’s been.  It took the whole week to prepare and film the MV for Blood, Sweat, & Tears.  It was fun but also tiring.  It was one of the most complicated MV’s we’ve done so far.  I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.  ARMY are going to love it.  We’ve only been able to eat, sleep, and work for the last four days straight to get it done.  

Today we got the day off to rest.  Manager Sejin and Y/N came over to the apartment in the afternoon.  They’re normally there so I didn’t think much of it at first.  Sejin hyung called us together in the living room and Y/N sat down beside him.  I figured something must be going on.  

They spilled the news that the company bought Y/N her own apartment near the new Big Hit building and close to the new apartment we’re moving into.  She spent the week moving while we were busy.  Sejin explained that it would keep her safer and help with the problem of us finding places to be alone with her.  The managers are worried about our little fights over her.  

Apparently, some of the members have been seen by security doing naughty things with her around the company building.  He didn’t go into detail, just asked that we stop.  I’m so curious about who else has been playing with our little fairy and where.  I’d take a guess it’s one of the three rap line hyungs since they have their private studios.  

Sejin hyung was looking around at us almost equally.  So no hints there.  Jin hyungs ears were red like when he’s embarrassed and was oddly quiet.  Jungkook was also blushing and looking at the floor but that could just be from the conversation topic in general.  Jimin did tell me what happened last week in the practice room.  It was nothing really but would be enough to make him feel guilty.  Hoseok hyung was giving me an accusing look.  Guess I can’t blame him for assuming it’s me.  

Anyway we all agreed to keep our promiscuous activities outside the company from now on.  Hoseok chimed in that we should throw Y/N a housewarming party.  We were all free for the evening.  Y/N said she was going to the bakery until eight o’clock but we could meet up after that.  After we got the schedule for the next few days laid out, manager Sejin and Y/N left.  Namjoon asked if we wanted to talk about anything else before the group split up to do their own things.  No one wanted to talk so we were let go.  

The rest of the afternoon went by quickly.  Around seven, Hoseok suggested that he and I go out to pick up party stuff.  I knew he wanted to use it as a time to talk over some things.  We did need to talk so I agreed to go along.  We walked down to the closest convenience store.  Hobi picked up the conversation as soon as we got out onto the street.  He apologized about how he’d acted in the past about Y/N.  She’s so lovely and charming he couldn’t help also developing a little crush on her.  

Because of our idol lifestyles none of us are very experienced with romance and relationships.  Every time we get busy and don’t have time for seeing Y/N we fix our tension but it returns when she’s part of the picture again.  We’ve both had time to come to terms with the reality of the situation.  We came to an agreement to share her fairly and try not to get emotionally attached to her. 

It’s also neither of us who have done something with her at the company.  I mentioned how guilty Jin hyung looked.  He’s the best bet to us for who would get caught.  Just after nine o’clock Y/N texted us that she was ready for us to come over.  We were just picking up our take out order.  

The others were already at her apartment when we arrived.  Our arms were full of bags.  We got Y/N some good wine, chocolate, and a few bath bombs.  She deserves a few things to pamper herself.   With the MV filming over we could have a little cheat day on our diets.  We ended up ordering pizza and chicken.  Add on to that all the snacks, ramen, beer, wine, and soju we got at the convenience store.  Noona’s small table was covered in an amazing food pile.  After a short toast for her new house, everyone grabbed a plate to dig in.  

Namjoon asked Y/N if she liked her new house.  She said it’s very nice but a little lonely.  She’d never lived by herself before.  Hoseok said she wouldn’t be lonely as long as they visited often.  She laughed and agreed.  She would be too busy to be lonely soon.  

She also mentioned we all looked so handsome with our new hair colors.  I forgot she hadn’t seen our new hairstyles until yesterday.  This turned quickly into an argument about who’s hairstyle she liked best.  She insisted we were all handsome in our own ways.  We pushed her more to give a real answer.  She said Yoongi’s black hair since it’s the first time seeing him in person with dark hair.  I protested that it was my first time bleaching my hair blond.  She said it did suit me very well.  Hoseok also insisted his bright red was a big change.  She agreed it was bold and daring for him.  She made us drop it after that, cutting off Jimin’s own protest.  Jin said after the MV was released she would say he was the most handsome after all.  That started a new round of arguments.  

Most of the night went this way, chatting, eating, and drinking.  Y/N had been sitting between Hoseok and I the whole night.  When she got up to get something, Hoseok whined.  He’d been leaning on her as he started getting tipsy.  Namjoon chimed in that maybe it was time we started cleaning up and heading home.  Hoseok got up and rested his chin on Y/N’s shoulder.  He brought up that she said she was lonely here by herself.  Someone ought to stay the night with her.  

I had considered the thought earlier but given the situation thought it would be a little awkward to suggest.  Hoseok loses a bit of his shame when he’s tipsy.  We all gave him a surprised look that he was being so obvious.  Namjoon shook his head but it gave him an idea.  We could rotate keeping Y/N company at night if we had the next day off.  That doesn’t happen that often but it would be a fair enough way.  

Yoongi hyung complained about giving up his precious night off.  Namjoon gave him a weird look and made him agreed to make things even.  He gave in and said he’d just give his night to one of us other needy youngsters.  

To the others surprise I let Hoseok stay tonight for the first night.  On the way home I told them that the two of us had a talk today and worked things out.  Namjoon sat down to talk to me in our room before we went to sleep.  As our awesome leader hyung he just wanted to make sure I’m doing okay with everything.  I told him that I liked Y/N more than I should have in the beginning.  It’s been hard for me to see her with the others but she’s just doing her job.  I shouldn’t be upset by it.  Namjoon said my feelings are only natural and valid.  Most of the others could tell she was special to me and were worried about me getting hurt since she’s not allowed to reciprocate any of our feelings.  

It will take a little more time but I think I’ve come to terms with that reality of it.  Overall talking with Namjoon and Hoseok helped me feel better about the whole thing.  I’m still a little excited about Y/N having her own place and being able to finally spend a whole night with her eventually.
