by the way. there's no conceivable universe in which the FTL fleet that left Earth in NtN didn't have it incredibly rough.
I've said this before, but it bears reminding: they jumped blind, using untested technology, with NO supply lines back to earth and no concrete plans for a colony. they took ships that were supposed to stack 11 billion people canned in like sardines and nothing else and stocked them full with enough resources to live on for generations and somehow found a settlement, and that was before they had to rush the schedule because John was making noise about transparency and mask their actual launch as a trial run.
it wasn't a comfortable journey. I'd be very, very surprised if the total passenger count was higher than 10k people, for space/resources allocation reasons as well as for secrecy reasons. Every person on board was a mouth to feed, and their descendants, and their descendants. I've seen some people in fandom say stuff like "Of course they'd bring along servants! Rich wouldn't do chores!" and IMO that fundamentally misses the point.
This wasn't the space equivalent of a cruise liner, or the Titanic crossing the Atlantic with first-class quarters and third-class decks. This is the space equivalent of climate refugees crammed in 500 in a tiny fishboat crossing the sea with a non-insignificant chance of dying en route, after emptying their savings to pay for the trip. The fact that the people on board the FTL ships were once insanely rich doesn't mean they travelled in comfort.
This was a desperate last-chance trip, destination "anywhere but here", chances of survival unknown. Their privilege got them on the ships, but the moment they left Earth, that privilege ceased to exist; there was no way to enforce an existing social structure. This is why, again, I think there were no luxuries on board and absolutely definitely no servants - if you're about to willingly enter into complete social collapse, you don't WANT to bring people you regard as less than yourself, knowing that they will be your equals tomorrow.
I'm still convinced that half the fleet at least didn't make it out, and those who managed to found settlements were nearly wiped out multiple times at different points in history.

It will never not piss me off that 80s She-Ra toys were action figures but when they went to make toys for 2018 She-Ra, they would only give us fashion dolls.
How did they learn nothing from the popularity of their own toyline?
Literally, three decades passed and somehow sexism in toys got WORSE.

barnes and noble has been raising the prices of everything and further pushing for their premium membership option (which they raised the price of by 60 percent this year!) and then when they have big sales events, they're less than what they used to be.
last year at this time you could get one of their leather-bound book annex tomes for $12.50 (without a member discount) because of the 50 percent off all hardcover sales. but they raised the price of those tomes from 25 bucks to 30, and they decreased the sale from 50 percent off all hardcovers to 1/3rd off. so that same book that was $12.50 at last year's end-of-year sale is now 20 bucks. and that's supposed to be savings enough to induce me to walk into one of their stores this week?
i'm sorry but b&n has just gotten so greedy, even though their business has only been doing better and better in previous years. they do not have to be raising prices like they have been, and they can damn well afford to have the same savings events they used to. if you went to one of those hardcover sales a year or two ago, even if you lived in a less populated area like i do, you had never seen a b&n so busy in your life. things were flying off the shelves. they WERE making bank.
and as a company they've only been growing and growing (as much as the publishing industry has been, in recent years). but there are so many other ways to buy books. CHEAPER ways to buy books. MORE SUSTAINABLE ways to buy books. and since books and booksellers are doing really well right now, i don't see why barnes and noble is getting so greedy when they don't have to be. i dont like new shiny books that much. people buy books for the content, ultimately. sometimes we as consumers might make the choice that a new shiny book is worth paying a bit more for, but not that much. barnes and noble has just been demanding more and more of their customers' money for less and less benefit.

i was gonna make a poll about "pick your favorite amazing devil lyric" but the idea of narrowing down their lyrics to 9-10 options gives me the hives, so, tell me your favorite amazing devil lyric in the notes?

The destiny reddit is an absolute warzone right now. Do yourself a favor and avoid it like the plague
Oh no. I saw a lot of negative comments overall and while I understand where they're coming from, I think at some point, some people should calm down.
I mentioned some of the issues I had with the campaign and I stand by them, I think some of this stuff definitely felt rushed and that we're sorely lacking basic information to understand the plot. But I can get over that if it's fairly reasonable to believe we'll find out eventually (and it is) and if the rest is solid. And to me, the rest is solid.
I know people have issues with strand taking too much time from the campaign, and I get it. But also to me, strand being such a huge part of the story made the campaign feel more personal and invested for US, the Guardian. To me, that was the point. I do wish the campaign was a bit more expansive, perhaps another mission or two would've been perfect imo. An extra mission could've delved into the history of the Veil and what it means. It's a legitimate complaint that I share, but also some people online have been expressing it... rather explosively.
I'd also add a counter to my own complaint; when it comes to the plot about the Veil and the Witness and the Traveler, it's clear that this isn't the end; it's a setup. Everything that happened here we can learn about retroactively in a month or six months or a year. It may suck because it's content for THIS expansion so we want to know now, but it CAN be explained later.
But strand? Strand can't. We have to learn it NOW. We can't get strand and then have a really cool personal discovery quest about mastering it in a month or six or a year. So if they didn't have time to fit another two missions into the campaign, it's fairly obvious what is being cut.
Is it clumsy? Yeah, definitely. I definitely feel like some crucial information has been deliberately cut away and removed, possibly waiting to be delivered during the year to prepare us for The Final Shape. I'm not a fan of that method, I would prefer a solid chunk of lore about the current story to be delivered in the current story. If anything, then for clarity. Especially because the majority of the players will not be waiting around to read 15 lore tabs during the year to figure out what's the Veil. A major expansion should be self-contained.
But for the love of god, some of what I've seen online is basically some players acting like we have E.T. (1982) on our hands. Like, I agree that there's issues and I've spoken about them and I can do it again at any point, but at the end of the day, I had fun and the good stuff was good. Literally my only true complaint is that it feels like a mission or two are missing. Pretty much every problem I have would've been solved with that. But that's an unknown amount of extra time of work so I cannot make a comment whether they could've done that or not. I will assume they couldn't so they didn't. Generally don't like assuming that they did it maliciously because then we go into dev harrassment territory.

Helena: (whispering in myka's ear) You just say the word, my love.
Myka: (whispering back) Is this your idea of sweet talk?
Helena: (still whispering) I'm certainly excited about the prospect of avenging Leena's unjust murder.
Myka: (sighing) Just... play nice.
Helena: Nice was Leena's job. Abigail's taken it on just fine. Let's hope Artie doesn't murder her, too.
Myka: The Regents agreed, it wasn't him. They agreed that he wasn't himself. They've accepted that.
Helena: And I'm not a Regent. Nor are you. He wasn't himself? He wasn't anybody else either. Leena died by his hand for whatever decisions he made leading to the moment he... did what he did. How can you just..
Myka: (glaring)
Helena: (takes in a deep breath)
Myka: This is the warehouse, Helena. Artifacts do things to people. They play with your mind. We all know that risk. We all take it, every single day. It could have been any one of us. It could be. It has been.
Helena: If he had hurt you...
Myka: I know.
Helena: If he ever does.
Myka: I know.
Silence.
Myka: But I think, for now, we have reached our warehouse homicides quota. Right?
Helena: It doesn't have to be in the warehouse.
Myka: Helena.
Helena: Fine. I won't murder him.
Myka: That's all I'm asking.
Helena: For now.
Myka: I... okay, sure. I'll accept that.

unpopular opinion:
it's a fact of all communication that there will always be missing information between intention & execution
following that logic: as a creator, if you have to explain post-publication what you intended your message to be, you have failed in some way. i don't even mean this negatively, it's normal - you will not succeed at being understood by your audience 100% of the time.
having said that.
if i, as a creator, have a message---whether that's about the story or characters or meta---and i want my audience to know it and it's important to me....
....then, it is my job to make sure that message is unmissable.
it's why i'm not a fan of asking creators for confirmation on things in media.
"the writer confirmed that---" if that was important, it would be unmistakable
"the devs said they wanted to include but couldn't---" i'm looking you in the eyes and i'm promising you, if it was important to the company, it would be in there.
writer/creator/dev intentions should be treated like trivia rather than canon. it's interesting but it's not necessarily in the original text. they wanted to, and either did not, or tried but failed.
i get it: frankly, some stories are much more interesting when you shake out the loose bits of story that were never communicated (or poorly communicated). i love my headcanons & i love when my headcanons align with creator intention. it's satisfying.
but, of course, that's not the same thing as those interesting things being inextricable from the original text.
if the average intended audience member will not notice a detail that hints at subtext, it is as good as not being there, because it's not part of the story to most people in the audience.
even if it's important to you and me.
if it was important to the creator/s. it would be in there and it would be inarguable.

watching this clip again and thinking about girlhood and reflection and time and gender roles. like, i see my 7-year old niece, and it's gut-wrenching to watch her be pushed into the same eldest-daughter patterns of performance and forced perfection that i was as a kid, knowing what waits for her and yet not being able to save her.

These are pretty old, but it still stands. It's just a game but playing solo chips away at my soul ;;w;; Unfortunately some matches just send me in a rage (completely a me problem and only in Hunter, I just suck), but I love playing with chill players!
I got sad when playing rank with a friend spooked them (thanks a lot "spectate the pros" message) and am sad it might have made them not wanna play with me anymore.
