Notes from The Tape Notes Podcast:

•there are four cellos playing in PotB, one is George’s. They wanted one track of four (?) to be imperfect on purpose, played by an inexperienced hand (so not by George, who is quite skilled).

•the entire album is purposefully made with only 4 chords. (🎵 He's got a funny way of using the same four chords for every song he makes 🎵) Once they decided the rules they needed to follow for the album, ‘they were strict’.

•Matty and George just take turns snorting and laughing at each other’s words. George will say something serious and Matty will snort very loudly because ‘now it’s your turn being pretentious’ ajdbdjfb.

•their chemistry is as always insane in the sense they know each other inside & out and could finish each other’s sentences.

•they played an older version of the last intro dated around 2018 and it sounded a lot more like abiior obviously. It sampled an interview from Bjørk (‘stolen from the internet’ ; matty: ‘she doesn’t believe in suing though, right?’ george: ‘or she does a lot’ lol) and it was mostly George’s. It was beautiful (of course). George writes this insane rhyme with the word ‘ubiquitous ass’ ??? if I understood correctly

•George created this track without lyrics they called ‘Anxiety music’ and it later became the piano for the final version of the intro.

•about Happiness’ og demo from DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ, Matty didn’t recognise the ‘cool English voice’ was from an old interview of his!

•Matty played the very fast acoustic solo in Happiness — Matty: ‘It was one take’ George, laughing: ‘No, it was not’

•‘When we are together’, the demo being an acoustic ballad, was almost taken away from the album but then another song called ‘This Feeling’ (the demo is good btw) didn’t fit in with the rest of the album. Matty really didn’t want ‘When We Are Together’ on bfiafl because it reminded him of his ex and the breakup was too fresh, so they just.. tweaked with it adding the banjo & drums, and captured the bittersweet feeling Matty felt about it all 🥲.

•the drums in ‘When We Are Together’ are very simple and Matty said (paraphrasing) ‘We’re playing defence but nobody does this like George’ and it was really sweet

•matty: ‘if you take george [‘s part] out, it sounds…’

george: ‘If you take George out, it sounds…’ *the track stops playing altogether*

•the song was finished in 24 hours in a hurry bc the album had to be ready 6 months before release to make the vinyls. :”

If I wanted to start listening to noah kahan, what songs would you recommend?

omg this is so flattering ok. i feel like it depends on ur background LOL. like i am a small town northern girly so very much vibe with conflicting feelings about wanting to leave a shithole small town that u love. but heres some of my faves with lyrics that slay and sum up what the song is abt hehe

stick season - "now i am stuck between my anger and the blame that i cant face" - hes kinda known for this one!! kind of yearning sad longing fall vibes. ur half the problem in the relationship but also. u want to play the victim in ur mind. and thats cathartic sometimes.

growing sideways - "im terrified that i might never have met me, oh if my engine works perfect on empty" - um. kind of about learning to cope. w mental illness. dejected and depressing but with a little twinge of hope.. guy who goes to therapy and is on medication tells u well things arent perfect and im not good at this but u know what. things could also be worse.

homesick - "i got dreams but i cant make myself believe them, spend the rest of my life with what couldve been" - like if you hated a place that made you everything you are (you love it) (you hate it) (you want to leave) (you love it too much to leave)

view between villages - "the things that i lost here, the people i knew, they got me surrounded for a mile or two" - perfectly encapsulates the feeling of driving thru the small town u grew up in (my fave. short and sweet. the longer version on the extended album makes me sob a little)

paul revere - "i'll turn up the music, and i'll forget until it ends, that im not ready to let go yet" - ok so again. small town. you want to leave so badly. you promise you will leave you dont want to be here forever. if you could leave you wouldve already left.

dial drunk - "am i honest still? am i half the man i used to be?? i doubt it, forget about it, whatever" - toxic girls drunk drive and then call their ex to bail them out (she wont answer lmao)

call your mom - "dont let this darkness fool you, all lights turned off can be turned on" - kinda general content warning for this one, just make sure ur in a good place if u listen cuz its kind of like. hey u need to find a reason to survive idc what it is but u need to live. and i have been there and u will be ok but u just need to get thru this. and btw im ur friend and will hold ur hand and do the hard things and drive all night for u but u have to get thru the night for me.
