the extent of his development early on would've been admired by an older noelle weathered by time ; one who'd been blessed with tender shaping && support of friends. unfortunately at this time , she's still biting the hands that feed her -- side-eyeing any semblance of comfort && safety that lays itself before her ( like she's afraid to trust ). the classic hedgehog's dilemma : craving profound bonds but keeping everyone at an arm's length because it's safer. noelle aches to belong , to have friends ; to love. . . but she just doesn't know how. if you sat her down , spoke with the slightest implication that a healthier version of herself would mirror the boy before her , she'd laugh in your face.

a surge of pride dances within her chest. when it's noelle showing off on her own terms , it's all smiles && hums of content. talk about wishy-washy. a single bolt hops from hand to hand like a mild-mannered frog , completely docile in her hold. like hell would she willingly disclose her tattooed array to him -- it'd give him the upper hand && for someone who needs to stand out , this needs to stay a secret for as long as she remains in contact with him. despite the array's secrecy , whitlock can indulge ; can tell him how she does it. . . if only for bragging rights. ❝ wanna know how i do it , fullmetal ? ❞

for a moment , his shift in demeanor surprises her. yes , she was taking jabs left && right in hopes of avoiding any real chance to connect ( even though most attempts came from her ). the back of noelle's hand raises to cover a waning smile. despite the elric brother's infamy whistling through the busy streets she's walked ( or through briefings , wandering the halls of command ) , whitlock always tuned out the moment she heard his codename. hell , she doesn't even know his name beyond fullmetal. the usage of stray was entirely a shot in the dark , like most of her previous stabs. matter of fact , stormsurge has no idea that he was so hung up over that in the first place -- assumed that most ( if not all ) of his anger was derived from teasing his short stature. every push && pull between them was animalistic : circling each other , baring teeth , snarls && all through tucked tails. despite their mutual disdain for that leash , it's wise for them to keep their tempers under control. it's not until his voice cuts through the air that noelle learns what really struck him. really , that was profound ? the way he spoke about getting used to being called a dog of the military in contrast to how he views stray. . . both brows raise into her hairline , unable to hide the shock. then noelle states , plain as day : ❝ you've got that look in your eye. ❞ i have the same one.

maybe she could stand to learn about him , beyond what makes him tick. if they're going to be in the same command center often , understanding fullmetal could help in times of dire need. noelle was raised better , too. if she knew his circumstances -- well it'd be hypocritical to treat him any different. making no effort to apologize , the girl meets his glare with a hardened stare of her own. these two toss jab after jab , seemingly fated to never be on the same page. her body language imitates a soured cat , metaphorical ears pinned back && tail swishing behind her. still , he's got her beat. ❝ tch ; whatever , fullmetal. ❞

if he was still twelve , maybe they would've gotten more along on the desire to be feared . a devilish smile curled on lips when given his state alchemist name , pride swelling in his chest at the prospect of being called something so intimidating , only to get smacked in the face early on in his journey at some point with reality when he realized human connection is probably the most important thing to him , outside of his brother , and the priority was that . it also helped that his brother is not shy with telling him that he's being an asshole ( not quite put that way ) , and nothing is more humbling than having a younger sibling lecture you . ed would be remiss to say he didn't see any aspect of him within her , but not now .

eyes blink then widen at her sudden closeness . instinctively leaning away with a worriedly surprised expression , not exactly looking to get into a fight , but then it's quickly switched to instead lean forward with interest . his sights were set on the violet electricity spreading from her hands , doing what he does any time he encounters new alchemy : trying to figure it out . she didn't have an array visible anywhere that he caught , he briefly feels a similar sinking of his stomach when he assumes that she perhaps saw the truth , but even then , she hadn't clapped . his mind was trying to piece together the puzzle , barely listening to her bragging as he watched , a bad habit of his . he'll ask questions later , his mouth opening to ask one , but processing her words thereafter had him shut it just as quickly .

if it was a bad reaction she wanted , a reaction she'd get . his interest was replaced with a sudden look of genuine disdain . comments about his height always irked him , so don't think 'bionic shrimp' got tossed out the window with his focus on , instead , her making assumptions about him and his life . he'll return to that momentarily . teeth grit and brows narrow , a metallic taste he gets in the back of his throat when feeling a sudden amount of anger rising as his shoulders stiffen . fists get shoved into his pants pockets , remembering where they are : if colonel mustang showed up and ed was fighting in the halls of central , he felt there was little he could say that'd get his ass out of the fire , so he has to practice an incredible amount of restraint .

forget the compliment that preceded the taunting nick - name and the interest in his arm , " and who said i was a stray ? " it's not uncommon knowledge . the elric brothers have had to deal with , at least on surface level , their story being shared , even back in resembool . most people within close approximation to mustang's team and state alchemists are aware that their mom died and father walked out . he'd call himself a stray , easily , but it was like him acknowledging his own height —- done so begrudgingly , many time self - deprecatingly , and only when he's kicking himself or trying to garner some sort of sympathy from others , which he isn't above doing , but not what he's trying for now . he didn't want her ( or anyone ) to look down on him .

sensitive topic , needless to say . and he loathes it being brought up without precedent . he can't take what he dishes out , narrowed gaze staring at her face , another dedicated choice , not letting any aspect of his emotions hide : it's the only thing he can air out properly . he tries to be less upset with his next words , but the edge of annoyance , frustration , offense don't leave his voice , " and yeah , that's a great name . why don't you go tell furher bradley ? maybe even suggest they change yours to captain current while you're at it . even better idea : they put you in charge of picking them out . "
