“Fun fact: over the last couple of months, every time a friend of mine or a member of my family would ask me how the writing of my vows was going, they would look at me very warily after I answered that everything was going according to plan. Like no one would want to trust me with this, I really don’t understand why.”
The joke causes laughs to rise inside the room and Brendan takes a moment to survey the faces of the people he loves. His dad is looking very serious and his mom has her eyes bright, hands clutching her purse on her lap. Brendan doesn’t wink to them but he does smile extra hard before continuing.
“And I know no one worried about Thom because Thom is the one good with words in this relationship. It’s something that I won’t ever dispute but is still very funny to me because he could barely string together 5 words of English when we first met. Granted, he wasn’t even a teenager and my French was even worse but I won’t forget. I’m pretty sure I already found his accent cute back then, so.”
Another laugh among the audience, softer this time, accompanied by a choral of aws. Thom’s shaking his head slowly, smile too high on his cheeks. Brendan squeezes their hands where their fingers are laced together in between them. He then takes a deep breath, wills his brain to focus on the remainder of his speech.
“Anyway, back to the true matter at hand here. Truth be told, I initially wasn’t sure which direction to go with. I googled the Top 10 pieces of advice on how to write the perfect wedding vows but I think the only good thing I got from the internet was Trust yourself with your words. I know people love to talk about first times; first time they met their loved one, first kiss, the moment they realized they were in love. I barely remember the first time I met Thom because we were still kids. Our first kiss was messy and I can’t pinpoint the exact moment I knew I was in love with him because do you really expect dumb 20 years old hockey players to understand anything about feelings? Yeah, I know. But even though it may sound like I’m painting a terrible picture out here, I swear I wouldn’t have it any other way because we made it work our way, which made it just perfect. It’s never been easy because I’m probably the last guy someone would pick to have a long-distance relationship with but we figured it out, downloaded the apps, set the Skype dates and the calls and the stupid postcards now hanging on our fridge or in our offices. There were a lot of misses and fights and sad parts but I never doubted we would make it. I loved him way too hard for this to fail. And I’m pretty sure the feeling was mutual.”
It’s Thom’s turn to clamp down on his palms, hard. The light from above is making his eyes shine and Thom said he would kill Brendan if he made him cry at the altar but it’s not Brendan’s fault if Thom is a sentimental guy and he’s sure he can find a more fitting and agreeable punishment if he does break the promise that he didn’t really make (sorry babe, I know you, can’t bet against myself there).
“We could have gotten married so much sooner. The fact that I played in Las Vegas for several years and never got Elvis to tie us together is an honest miracle that my Dad probably prayed for every single day I was living there.”
This time, Brendan can identify Matty’s big booming laugh and he allows himself a glance at the UMich section of the room. Owen towering over everyone even while seated, Kent tucked by his side, Trusc with the biggest smile, everyone else looking so happy to be here.
Thom’s thumb rubs over his knuckles and Brendan can feel his heart beating really hard behind his ribcage. Maybe just maybe Brendan is starting to feel emotional too.
“It took the end of our careers to finally be able to settle together in the same city and working with Thom over the last two years is the best thing I could have asked for in my retirement. We never needed rings for Thom to call me his and vice-versa but considering he’s been the main reason for my happiness over the last two decades, I truly can’t wait to be able to call him my husband.”
send me a word + a pairing and I'll write a little something.

Glancing at the time, Chaewon could feel her stomach churn when she realized how late it was. She should have been with you an hour ago, but she was still at an interview and they had another one to go to right after that.
After their comeback, they’ve been so busy and everyday, schedules were tight. She could barely even get the chance to breathe with all the promotions and shows they had to partake in. It made seeing you much more difficult than it already was since you were both busy people.
Though you weren’t exactly as busy as her, she knows that school can also be very hetic. You were a very admirable student and the time you spent in studying just so your grades wouldn’t drop was something she wished she had when she was still studying, too. You had always told her how important it was for the two of you but when she decided to just focus on her career, you understood why she didn’t continue.
“Tired?” Hyejoo asked from beside her and the blonde turned to look at her, shaking her head while she pursed her lips together. “I want to go home.” She murmured softly, not wanting the others to hear her.
Her best friend snorted at her claim while leaning against her shoulder. “Same, but we can’t yet.” She reminded. “I just want to go to sleep.” She grunted while Chaewon shook her head slightly. “It’s not that I’m tired but… today is my anniversary with Y/n.” She whispered softly, making the latter pull away, eyes wide in surprise. “Oh my god. I didn’t realize it was already your anniversary!” She said in disbelief before she looked around.
She ended up frowning along when she realized what her best friend already figured out earlier. “Maybe we can try to talk to the others about missing an interview?” She suggested, but they knew that it was impossible for them to do so.
When that interview finally ended, Hyejoo quickly caught Sooyoung’s attention before she’s gesturing to the blonde. “Unnie, do you think Gowon unnie can go home?” The question surprised the older girl and she furrowed her brows when she looked to the said girl who was busy speaking with their other members.
“Is something wrong with her?” She asked confusedly and the latter shook her head. “No, but she needs to get home for an important thing.” She says plainly, making Sooyoung even more confused until Hyejoo exhaled through her nose.
“It’s her anniversary.”
The older girl’s eyes widened and a soft “oh” fell from her lips before she’s looking around. She searches for Haseul before catching the leader’s gaze and then waving her over. “Give me a moment.”
Chaewon looks over to see the three girls talking and she looks confused when they steal glances in her direction. When she notices Hyejoo pointing to her, it doesn’t take her long to realize what they were talking about, especially when Haseul looks both concerned and guilty like that.
Immediately, she walks over, but by the time she’s there, Haseul is rushing to a manager and Chaewon looked at her best friend. “What did you tell them?” She asked while watching the leader.
“Well, you have someone waiting for you at home. We’ve been busy, but that doesn’t mean we won’t let you see them.” Sooyoung patted her shoulder with a friendly smile.
“Gowon, are you sure you can go with the interview?” Their manager soon arrived and Hyejoo quickly nudged her side with a meaningful look as Haseul looked at them, gesturing for the three to play along. “If you don’t feel too well, we can drive you back before heading to the venue.”
Chaewon looked at their leader in awe but she quickly masked a pained look while she nodded her head. “I, uh, don’t really feel too good. I’ve been trying to just endure it, but I guess I can’t really…” Sooyoung holds her for extra conviction and the man nods his head. “That’s okay. Let’s get going.”
Chaewon sent her friends a thankful look and they return it with a smile. Throughout the ride, she keeps herself from smiling and is eventually dropped home. Hyejoo comes with her for assistance and Chaewon wastes no time hugging her best friend. “Thank you so much.” The younger girl chuckles while shaking her head. “Just have fun and tell Y/n I said hi.”
“Will do.”
Hyejoo leaves when she gets inside and the blonde had the biggest smile on her face as she walked inside. “Y/n?” She calls while taking her shoes off, but when she walked to the table, she noticed the food set on it with some petals and candles.
Seeing the set up and your lack of presence made her heart sink when she remembers how late it was. You were probably waiting to surprise her but she was way too busy to get back in time.
She quickly placed the food in the microwave to reheat, knowing that she couldn’t touch the stove lest she wants to set something on fire again. When that’s done, she shuffles over to her bedroom. As she pokes her head inside, she quickly sees you laying on her bed and she pouts when she sees the gloomy expression on your face.
“I’m home.” She says softly and you huff while turning around, back to her and making her pout more. “Y/n, I’m sorry for being late, but our schedules were tight.” She apologizes when she came closer but you still wouldn’t look at her.
“I wasn’t supposed to be home yet, actually.” She tells you when she takes a seat. “I told Olivia Hye that it was our anniversary today, and then she told Yves unnie and Haseul unnie. They made an excuse to our manager so I could come home.” She explained and you finally looked at her, checking to see if she was deceiving you. But her eyes are only sincere and full of love when she offers you a small smile.
She didn’t forget. She was just busy, and you couldn’t really blame her.
“Okay, I’m not mad anymore.” At that, Chaewon beamed a smile and hopped on the bed, tackling you into a hug and nuzzling you. “I wouldn’t forget our anniversary, silly.” She says after giving you a quick peck on the lips and you wrapped your arms around her waist to pull her closer.
Sighing, you nod at her while she rested her head on your chest. “I know. But it’s just, I didn’t get to see you much this week. I thought that with how busy you were, it slipped your mind.” You muttered while she took your hand and played with your fingers. “I could never. I was actually worried because I thought I wouldn’t get to see you today.”
“Speaking of, your friends are really nice for letting you miss an interview and lying to your manager just to see me.” She smiles more and presses a gentle kiss to your jaw before returning to her previous position. “Well, they know how much you mean to me. I didn’t even know what they were planning until our manager asked me if I was too sick to go to the interview.” She giggled and you smiled more before kissing her forehead.
“I have to thank them for that.” You say and she nods before she’s looking up to meet your eyes. “You do, but for now, can we still have that dinner you prepared? I heated it up.” She asks with a smile and you could never really say no.
“Of course.”
When the rest of the girls come back, they smile when they see both you and your girlfriend curled up on the couch, both fast asleep while holding each other.
