Obbligato: The Devotion to Tatsumi Kazehaya - 13
Writer: Akira
Season: Spring, three years ago
Characters: Kaname, Tatsumi, Jun
Proofreading: Remi + 310mc (JP) & honeyspades (ENG)
Translation: Peace & hyenahunt
Tatsumi: The root of all misfortune lies in inequality and injustice. They are the root of all unhappiness. That is why they must be corrected.
Tumblr media
[Read on my blog for the best viewing experience with Oi~ssu ♪]
Kaname: ... I feel the same as Sazanami. If the fame and shine doesn't belong to my own name, then there's no point to it.
But... Still, it seems as if "Tatsumi Kazehaya" is doing well for itself.
Maybe I should learn from it. Throw away this pride of mine and ensure success through that.
All so I can become the sparkling idol I've always dreamed of being.
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: Haha. If you so wish, then we are able to help you in a number of ways. We offer idol practices, studies, and can even help you find work — all free of charge.
In fact, I pay everyone who comes to one of my gatherings an equal part of my own wages.
Kaname: What do you mean...?
Tatsumi: You see, I have no interest in money. All of the money that "Tatsumi Kazehaya" accumulates is thus given out in equal shares to those gathered here.
No matter how much you've done, or what you've helped with, you're given the same amount of pay as the person next to you.
Hence, I've asked them to help me with the work I've received as much as possible.
Kaname: Are you for real? You're the one paying them?
It isn't the other way around? They're only managing to catch rays of the limelight because of you, aren't they? And yet... you're paying them?
Tatsumi: That's right. I likened it to a company, didn't I? Anyone who becomes a part of "Tatsumi Kazehaya" is offered the same regular pay as everyone else within it.
It's only natural to reward those who work a reasonable sum, isn't it? I would never ask someone to do my work for free.
Such a thing would be against our doctrine— nay, against human decency itself.
Tumblr media
Jun: Ohhh, I get it now... I see just why these guys don't care for working on their own and are perfectly content just being "Tatsumi Kazehaya's assistants.”
They can just kick back and let their earnings pour in that way. Why wouldn't they? The cash they earn through this kinda fixed income is definitely gonna be way more than whatever an idol with no accomplishments could get through independent work.
And on top of that, Kazehaya-senpai's so brilliant at what he does that his work's a huge success every single time. Thanks to that, these guys get the chance to shine while avoiding any risk of failure or injury, or of being thought of as useless.
Sure is a dream job — one fit for morons.
Kaname: And on top of that, if I'm understanding correctly, you pay those a fair wage even if they haven't worked at all?
Tatsumi: I do. We don't discriminate here, you see. All are equal.
Jun: Mmm, well, I’m not that educated so I might be wrong, but this whole arrangement'spretty much that thing, isn't it? Starts with a c and ends with ism....
Our country's a capitalist nation, so y'know, the opposite of that —
Tatsumi: There's truly no need to go that far. I only wish to treat everyone as equally and fairly as possible.
Such a world would be ideal, wouldn't you agree? I want to make it a reality.
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: Everyone is treated equally, given the same opportunities, and is paid fairly for their work. That way, everyone is able to live a happy, fulfilling life.
The root of all misfortune lies in inequality and injustice. They are the root of all unhappiness.
That is why they must be corrected.
There is a distinct disparity between the Special and Non-Special Students here at Reimei Academy. I'm doing what I can to close it.
It doesn't matter who you are, what you are, or even where you came from: you will be treated equally. Everyone will carry the same weight, walk the same amount of steps, and reach the same destination.
Everyone finishes at the same time. Everyone will be granted the same first place result, fairly and ideally.
And that is how we'll stop needless fighting over who's won and lost, we'll cease begrudging others for what they have, and we'll share the same happiness with one another.
That is the ideal world I dream of.
To bring it even slightly closer to reality, I'm doing what I can— though at the moment, this small sphere is all I'm able to influence in such a way.
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: One day, I will take all those who inhabit Reimei Academy, the teachers and Special Students alike, as well as those in the idol industry, in this country, in this world...
And change their ways so we may live in such an Eden.
No, it's more than that. That is my mission in life as the Voice of God, as someone born within a family who teaches His words.
I truly believe that, and so I will live by that faith.
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: May all of God's creations be blessed. Amen.

The Detective's Banquet 1
Writer: Mitsuki
Character(s): Shino Hajime, Mashiro Tomoya, Hidaka Hokuto, Sakuma Ritsu, Isara Mao, Hasumi Keito, Sakuma Rei, Kazehaya Tatsumi, HiMERU, Shiina Niki
Translated by: jewwyfeesh
Hokuto: Analysis result: no signs of life have been detected.
Tumblr media
Season: Autumn Location: Luxury Hotel Room
Tumblr media
[A dark and stormy night, in a certain hotel room…]
Tomoya: How did it end up like this…
At first, it was meant to be a one-off banquet with inference and logical reasoning as its main theme, but… suddenly, there was a real case to be solved.
Tumblr media
Due to the unexpected rainstorm, the once comfy holiday spot became an island isolated from the outside world. Everyone’s stuck here, unable to leave.
We were like beasts trapped in a cage – despite looking for clues all over the place, wracking our brains trying to reason it out, we still couldn’t find the killer hidden amongst us.
As time went by, I had an ominous premonition. That’s why I’m here, recording, narrating my side of the story as truthfully as I can.
Afterwards, I’ll hide the memory card away. If something unexpected were to happen to me, I hope that there would be someone who’ll find the clues I’ve left behind, and bring the truth to light.
Tumblr media
I remember that—
Tumblr media
……?!
Tumblr media
W-who…? Who’s there!
Tumblr media
???: It seems like you didn’t close your door fully, ‘High School Student Detective’.
Location: Dead End Cafe
Tumblr media
[The afternoon before, in the holiday resort’s main cafe area]
Rei: Dearest detectives, welcome to this island, an island far away from any hustle and bustle. I have prepared a banquet to welcome you seven, and of course, in this feast of inference… mysteries do run aplenty.
While we are to temporarily stay within the boundaries of the hotel due to the sudden storm, I assure you that the service here is the best of the best.
As the owner of this island, as well as the organizer of the banquet… Without further ado, kindly allow me to introduce the detectives that have gathered here today.
Tumblr media
First of all, we have my little brother, Ritsu. The media has bestowed upon him the title of ‘Vampire Detective’, but I sincerely doubt those reports that shower him with praise have sufficiently showcased Ritsu’s unparalleled intellect and cuteness—
Ritsu: Haha, anija really loves to joke, doesn’t he? There are other skilled detectives here as well, and I don’t intend on making a fool of myself in front of the real experts. Please pay him no mind, and enjoy the banquet.
Rei: I’m sure everyone’s heard of this person — possessing superb reasoning ability and the ability to solve a case without stepping foot on scene… we have the aptly named ‘Armchair Detective’!
HiMERU: Thank you for the invitation, Sakuma-san. HiMERU is very happy for this opportunity to engage the other detectives in discussions of reason.
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: I didn’t expect to see you here, HiMERU-san; I really do look forward to working on solving these with you ♪
HiMERU: Likewise. HiMERU wasn’t expecting to bump into you here either.
Tatsumi: Aah, I almost forgot to introduce myself to you all. I’m Kazehaya Tatsumi, a pastor from a nearby church. I happened to have helped solve a few cases while working. As such, I was referred to as the ‘Clergyman Detective’.
Tumblr media
Mao: Both an idol and a detective, I am Trickstar’s Isara Mao ☆
Despite being called the ‘Idol Detective’, I only helped to investigate a case before a concert, which allowed the event to proceed as planned… it’s not really something worth boasting about…
Hajime: I’m the ‘Part-time Detective’ Shino Hajime. If you need anything, please feel free to approach me ♪
Tumblr media
Tomoya: Erm… I’m the ‘High School Student Detective’, Mashiro Tomoya… Nothing special about me.
(Why are all the acting roles I get so plain… At the very least, I would’ve liked a higher rank or title of some sort… something like ‘Super High Schxxl Detective’, maybe. That does sound way cooler.)
(Ah, Hokuto-senpai’s about to do his introduction! I better pay attention.)
Tumblr media
Hokuto: Hidaka Hokuto. ‘Bionic Detective’. Serial Number 3A1217.
Tomoya: (I nearly forgot that Hokuto-senpai’s character is an android who uses arithmetic calculations to emulate personalities… It does sound very difficult to pull off, but Hokuto-senpai definitely won’t have a problem!)
Rei: Now that everyone has gotten to a little more about the companions you’ll be embarking on this analytical journey with… Before we kick start the competition of brains and observational skills, let us first enjoy a pleasant banquet ♪
As wine will inhibit the brain’s precision and function, kindly allow me to use this cup of blood red tomato juice to prevent that—
Tumblr media
……?!
Ritsu: Anija?!
Tumblr media
H-how could this happen? W-why did he suddenly collapse?
Hokuto: An anomaly has been detected. Automatically running the body scan—
Tumblr media
Analysis result: no signs of life have been detected.
Commencing further testing—
Analysis result: fingernails are pink, complexion is cherry red, and there’s a smell of bitter almonds near the lips. Cause of death tentatively determined to be cyanide poisoning.
Tumblr media
Ritsu: Wh-what…?! No, no! I don’t believe it…
Mao: ……
Hajime: Ritsu Onii-chan… Wait no, ‘Vampire Detective’-san, please restrain your grief…
Tumblr media
HiMERU: That’s right. HiMERU reckons that the most important thing right now is to ascertain the identity of the killer. According to what Sakuma-san said earlier on… due to the raging thunderstorm, everyone is to stay within the boundaries of this hotel for their own safety. That’s to say—
Tatsumi: That person may very well be hiding amongst us.
HiMERU: ……Yes.
Tumblr media
Tomoya: (Whatever happened was really unexpected, yet everyone’s quick on their feet to react! I need to keep up!)
If he was poisoned after consuming the tomato juice, that means that the poison must’ve come from either the juice or the cup, right?
Mao: Indeed, these methods of poisoning are more convenient than others. May I ask who has previously handled these items?
Niki: I was the one in charge of the food and drink for this banquet, but I wouldn’t think of poisoning such holy food!
Tumblr media
Keito: The cutlery was prepared by me. Sakuma-san and I grew up together, close like brothers[1]. I have no motive to kill him.
Tumblr media
Ritsu: I was the one who handed him that glass of tomato juice… if I had known earlier…
Hokuto: Analysis complete. Lethal doses of toxins were not found in the juice nor the vessel.
Tumblr media
Tomoya: —EH?!
Translator's notes: [1] 情同手足 - an idiom that directly translates to "as close as one's hands and feet", which means like brothers / with a brotherly love for each other

Hii can I get if it’s okay a Rinne, tatsumi and Rei confession scene either one confessing first is okay and there reactions, especially on tatsumi hehe <3 and uh please not a church scenario LDNSJKS <33
Tumblr media Tumblr media
☆—AMAGI RINNE
Who confesses first: Rinne! Though you don’t really get it at first…
How: ??? I’m not even sure???
You’d like to think that with all the time you’ve spent with Crazy:B, you’re pretty desensitised to their idiosyncrasies.
There’s logic to their chaos, which you’ve slowly come to understand over the course of all the months you’ve been stuck with CosPro’s finest.
Kohaku-chan is pretty quiet, like he was forced to grow up too fast, but he acts more his age around people he trusts. HiMERU-san is also quiet, though they’re more of the ‘unconscious’ quiet, like they’re so used to hiding parts of themself they aren’t sure how to let them show.
Niki-chan’s the easiest to get along with, friendly and open. And of course, there’s Rinne.
He’d annoyed you a lot at first, but you think you’re justified since that’s basically his trademark at this point.
But you’d come to understand that he’s not all that bad. He can be a brat, sure, but he’s got his own brand of amazing.
So you’re definitely surprised when one day Rinne proclaims both you and Niki-chan to be his wives.
Not so surprised that you can’t retaliate, though!
“Shouldn’t I be the husband? I’m always working hard so you guys can do Lives and make money, plus I’m the one taking care of all the paperwork. If anything, I’m the overworked corporate slave husband and you and Niki-chan are my wives!”
Rinne lets out his signature ‘gyahahaha’ laugh but you think you can see a hint of surprise in his eyes.
You’d think that would be the end of it but noooo.
Everywhere you go, you’re no longer introduced as L/N Y/N, CosPro secretary and, like, occasionally Crazy:B’s impulse control. Now you’re just L/N Y/N, Amagi Rinne and Shiina Niki’s husband.
Soon enough, you just…accept it. Okay, I guess I’m your husband now?!
Sure, this means you get hit with the brunt of the marriage jokes but at least you have it better than Niki-chan, who has to deal with the marriage jokes and the stripping jokes.
And you can brag about your gorgeous wives all the time.
Tumblr media
☆—KAZEHAYA TATSUMI
Who confesses first: neither of you!
How: who knows? It’s kind of like a ‘didn’t know they were dating situation’
People tend to joke sometimes that you and Tatsumi are the ‘parents’ of Alkaloid, but you like to refute that statement.
Mayoi-chan is the mom, you’re more of the…cool wine aunt? Or vodka uncle, perhaps?
Besides, you’re not even StarPro material. CosPro through and through, that’s you.
You’re the Bad Influence™ on the kids.
Despite taking on the role of Producer–and responsibility that comes with it–you like to think that in a unit with Tatsumi, who leads a…disciplined life, and Mayoi-chan, who is the single most anxious person you have ever met, Hiiro-kun and Aira-chan need a more relaxed individual who can show them that it’s okay to take it easy sometimes.
Tatsumi is often chiding you to show more control since the younger members of Alkaloid look up to you a lot, but you’ve told him that he does that enough for the both of you.
The two of you are always bantering with each other, though it’s mostly you bullying him.
(Lovingly, of course!)
Scary dog privileges except you are the scary dog.
Give each other cheesy nicknames and never hesitate to tell the other you love them.
“Bye kiddos, Mayoi-chan! Gonna bounce, maybe bully Saegusa-kun for a pay raise again… Love you, babydoll~”
“I love you too, angel.”
Literally everyone thinks you’re dating but no one says anything about it because a) they don’t have the courage to ask about it because again, scary dog privileges b) they just assume this is how normal friendships work (looking at you, Hiiro-kun…) or c) they just don’t care enough to bother.
You two are basically those couples on TV, the ones whom no one knows if they’re just friends or secretly dating.
The two of you blur the line between romantic and platonic so often that when you do (finally) date, literally no one is surprised.
(except the ones who already thought you were dating and couldn’t believe that whatever the fuck you two had going on was supposedly ‘platonic’!?)
Tumblr media
☆—SAKUMA REI
Who confesses first: you!
How: after he overworks himself…again
You’ve known Rei for quite some time, so you like to think you’re familiar with his habits, both good and bad. So it’s no surprise to you when you find him passed out at his desk.
You sigh. He does have a bad habit of overworking himself…
But you say nothing, proceeding instead to scoop him up in a bridal-style carry.
He’s light enough that it isn’t too hard, though his lankiness forces you to adjust multiple times to make sure he isn’t spilling completely out of your hold.
Carefully as to not wake him, you gently deposit him in his bed before going over to the desk to sort through all the papers. Most of them are proposals for UNDEAD, but there are a few documents that require a more thorough approach.
Honestly, you could just let them be, you’ve done enough, but you decide instead to sit down and start reading.
After all, Rei is someone you care about deeply and you want to help lessen his burden, if only a little bit.
After some time–it might be a few hours, you’re not entirely sure–you feel a weight drop onto your back and a head nuzzle into your neck.
You don’t even give him a chance to explain himself or insist on finishing his work before you’re scolding him, though not as harshly as you should be.
“Rei, you really should be more careful. If you’re going to do things like this next time, I’ll have to follow you around like some sort of guard dog. If you’re taking on too much work, come to us for help next time. We all love you, y’know? You’re not a bother to us.”
He must be more exhausted than you thought because he doesn’t deflect or laugh it off, just makes a noise of affirmation and clings onto you tighter.
“Mm…okay. Love you too.”
☆—notes!

Do you have any shoujo manga recommendations? I recently read Sasaki and Miyato and realised that I have been severly missing out!
Sure!! Thanks for asking me!
First, in case you haven't read it yet, Sasaki and Miyano has a spinoff that starts six months before the plot of Sasaki and Miyano called Hirano and Kagiura also by Shou Harusono.
Tumblr media
This one focuses on Sasaki's friend, Hirano and his new dormmate, Kagiura. I know Sasaki had extra stories with them but the spinoff gave them an actual story. It currently has about 23 chapters and a light novel with the light novel being the first thing that happens chronologically. No anime for it as far as I know. The back of the first volume has a timeline of where events fit (this came out when Sasaki was up to Volume 5)
Tumblr media
Speaking of novels, Sasaki and Miyano has two novels, one focusing on the characters' first year and one on their second year. I haven't read them yet so I'm not sure what exactly happens in them but if you can, check them out!
OK, now for other recs!
Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku by Fujita
Tumblr media
This one is really cute! An office worker and otaku named Narumi Momose got dumped by her boyfriend when she got outed as one. Feeling awkward about running into him at work after the bad breakup, she quit her job and got a new one at a different company. This time, she's determined to keep her secret under wraps as to avoid another incident. However, this may prove to be hard when she finds out her childhood friend and fellow otaku Hirotaka Nifuji works at the company and almost outs her on her first day. She meets up with him after work to catch up and when Narumi tells him about her recent breakup, he asks her why not date an otaku. Specifically him. She rejects it at first but when he says he can help her in life, video games and with her booth at Comiket, she agrees.
There are three couples this series focuses on. The second couple knew each other since high school and have been dating for about a decade and work at the company with Narumi and Hirotaka. The third couple is the younger brother of Hirotaka and a gamer who goes to his college. It's a lighthearted comedy about office worker otakus and navigating their relationships. A lot of references to anime, video games, BL, GL, you name it. Like Sasaki, this was a webcomic posted on pixiv so the pacing and layout feel similar, at least to me. There are 11 volumes (6 volumes if you go by the English translation bc they combined two volumes into one for 5 of them and then the last one is by itself). I mainly got into this one bc Hirotaka was aesthetically my type. I remember seeing the first volume cover at kinokuniya when only the Japanese version was out and being like "I need to find out what this series is bc I need to meet him"
Kimi Ni Todoke by Karuho Shiina
Tumblr media
This was a series I read when I was in high school. High school freshman Sawako Kuronuma has been feared and misunderstood by her peers all her life due to her appearance. It was so bad that her classmates call her Sadako since she looks like the character from The Ring. She had resigned to her fate of never making a friend until popular boy Kazehaya starts talking to her. The more time he spends talking to her, the more her world opens up and she starts making friends and experience things she hadn't been able to before this point. As they spend more time together, love blossoms between the two characters.
There are 30 volumes and 38 episodes. I read up to volume 18 and then stopped because that was the most recent volume at the time and I kinda forgot about by the time more volumes came out. But that was my fault not the manga because this series is really really cute!! A term I've coined for myself when I read this was whenever Kazehaya and Sawako were being cute together, I'd exclaimed "THESE ADORABLE LITTLE FUCKS!!" because they are so adorable to each other. The friends Sawako makes are really cool and fun in their own right. If you want some really cute, tooth rotting sweetness, I recommend this series.
Princess Jellyfish by Akiko Higashimura
Tumblr media
Tsukimi Kurashita is a jellyfish fanatic that lives in Amamizukan, a woman only apartment building that houses other woman with their own fixations. They are considered NEETS and have a strict rule of no men allowed in their living space. Tsukimi's love for jellyfish came from going to a jellyfish aquarium with her mom before she died of an illness when Tsukimi was a kid. She goes to a pet shop regularly to visit a spotted jellyfish she's taken a fancy to that she named Kurara. When she sees that the employees put a moon jellyfish in the same tank, she fears for its life as the moon jellyfish will kill Kurara if not taken care of. However, her fear of talking to normal people lead to a misunderstanding with the employee until a stylish person comes to her rescue and they take Kurara back to Amamizukan. The next morning, Tsukimi finds out the stylish person she brought back to her home is an illegitimate son of a politician and cross-dresser named Kuranosuke Koibuchi.
There are 84 chapters and 11 episodes of this series. I read up to about chapter 74 before stopping for the same reason I did for Kimi Ni Todoke. It's a really fun time. The characters are funny and sweet, the situations are entertaining, it's just a fun o' time. And the art is really pretty!!
Skip and Loafer by Misaki Takamatsu
Tumblr media
Mitsumi Iwakura moved from her small town on the outskirt of Ishikawa Prefecture to Tokyo to start high school. However, she gets lost going to school on the first day due to the culture shock and seems at a loss at what to do. That's when she meets Sosuke Shima who was late to school himself and travels with her to school. The series follows Mitsumi as she experiences school life in the city and meets lots of new people and makes friends with Sosuke along for the ride.
There's currently about 59 chapters and 12 episodes of this series. I started reading it when the anime was announced and I had a fun time reading it. I really enjoyed Mitsumi and seeing her learn and broaden her horizons as she goes to school and hang out with Sosuke and everyone else. It's a nice story!

High school student Uenoyama Ritsuka is a guitarist in a instrumental only band with college students Akihiko Kaji and Haruki Nakayama. When going to his usual hiding spot for lunch, he finds Mafuyu Sato sleeping with a guitar with broken strings in his arms. Uenoyama offers to fix it and when he does and plays a note, Sato begs him to teach him how to play. Uenoyama is reluctant but gives in when Sato persists. After spending some time together, Uenoyama finds out that Sato has a beautiful singing voice and invites him to join his band.
There are 9 volumes, 11 episodes and a movie, with another movie on the way. The series focuses on three relationships. The first is the relationship between Uenoyama and Sato, the second between Akihiko and Haruki and the third between Sato's childhood friends Hiiragi and Shizusumi. The art is really pretty and the characters are so good!! I really enjoyed the story a lot! My favorite character is Hiiragi and I can't wait for the next movie to come out because they're gonna cover his story then and I wanna hear him sing!! (Also his seiyuu is Fumiya Imai AKA seiyuu for Akito Shinonome so double reason why I wanna hear it) Also, Imma use this as an excuse to post a page I really wanna see animated bc I can hear it so clearly in my head.

Yuu Koito, lover of shoujo manga, always dreamed of being confessed to and experience that heart pounding feeling she sees happen in her books. However, when she's confessed to by a guy in middle school, she feels nothing and rejects him. Now starting high school, she's left confused on what her lack of feeling means. When she sees the student council president Touko Nanami turn down a boy, she asks her for help with her situation. But when Nanami confesses her love to Koito, will she feel that spark she's being hoping for? There's 8 volumes, 13 episodes and 3 light novels starring a side character. I'm up to volume 6 of this one and I'm really enjoying it!! The story is engaging, the charatcers are interesting. I like that Yuu isn't a pushover, she's a bit snarky and doesn't let Touko push her around. And I like how Touko comes off as a competent student council president but she has a more vulnerable side that she only shows Yuu. They pair nicely with each other.

OK I know you know this one already but this wouldn't be a rec list made by me if I didn't include it. This is my favorite series ever. It's mecore. Me-coded. Me. Second year high schooler Chiyo Sakura finally gets the courage to confess her love to Umetarou Nozaki, a guy in her grade. However, she messes up the confession and says she's his biggest fan instead of "I like you". Nozaki, in response, gives her his autograph and then invites her to his house. She accepts but once they get there, he has her do inking on a manga he makes. Turns out, Nozaki is a manga artist under the pen name Sakiko Yumeno and he's had his eye on Sakura for a while because he wanted to bring her onto his team as an inker. She agrees to join so she can get closer to him.
There's currently 14 volumes, 12 episodes and an OVA split into six 5-mintue parts. This series has me dying of laughter with every chapter. The characters are fun, the story is fun, it's just a fun time! There are three main couples with some side couples and duos that get their own time in the spotlight as well. The main ones are Sakura and Nozaki, Sakura's friend Yuzuki Seo and Nozaki's screentone assistant and first year Hirotaka Wakamatsu, and Nozaki's background artist and third year theater club president Masayuki Hori and "Prince of the Drama Club" Yuu Kashima. Other characters like Mikoto "Mikorin" Mikoshiba, Mayu Nozaki, Yukari Miyako, Ken Miyamae, and Mitsuya Maeno all bring their own brand of fun to the table. This series made me laugh so much I couldn't read it in class to slack off because I'd laugh out loud and disrupt class. I've yet to read another series that made me do that. I cannot recommend this series enough. Please read AND watch it if you have not already. Nozaki is starting to gain awarness. I lose my mind whenever I see it happen. I wanna see it happen. It's been 13 years!
Imma put an honorable mention here because I haven't read or watch it yet but I've heard Horimiya written by HERO and illustrated by Daisuke Hagiwara is really good. I wanted to but just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Tumblr media
That's all I have for right now! If you've already read/watched all of these already, lmk and I'll list some more!! Hope you enjoy! ^_^

Re-Watching: Kimi ni Todoke Season 2
Tumblr media
In which my opinion has flipped so completely on its head that I'm un-retiring for a single post to talk about it.
Return of the King
It's been almost two years since I've made a post like this.
For those of you who've only joined me after my semi-retirement on the tail end of 2021, The Anime Binge-Watcher used to be one of the most extensive anime analysis projects I've ever seen in Western fandom. I would consume anime at ridiculous rates and blog my thoughts in chunks of 3 or 4 episodes, piecing together all my observations and opinions in nice structured paragraphs like the ones you're reading now. In my glory days, I could get through two, three, even four posts a day. Heck, when I first watched Kimi ni Todoke five years ago, I tore through all twelve episodes of season 2 in a single day, writing no less than five separate analyses of my developing thoughts along the way. My long-term readers can attest to what a wild and wonderful journey it was, and even though I've since transitioned into a much looser and low-key blogging style, I still miss those days when I could spill countless words about the countless stories I consumed.
But of course, life moves on, and there was only so long I could dedicate that much of my free time to a hobby when real life was knocking at the door. I started this project as a college freshman with way too much free time on his hands; I'm an actual adult now, overseas job and everything. Not to mention all the other hobbies and creative pursuits taking up my attention. I just don't have enough time anymore to spend on truly in-depth analytical writing like I used to. And that's okay; the three-and-a-half years I dedicated to The Anime Binge-Watcher in its true form were more than enough to say everything I needed to about this medium and my relationship to it. This project is as complete as it could ever meaningfully be. So while I certainly miss those days, I'm more than happy to let this be my casual anime watching blog from now on.
But I'm making an exception today.
Because re-watching the second season of Kimi ni Todoke has so thoroughly upended my opinion on it that I have no choice but break my thoughts down just as extensively and in-depth as I used to do on a regular basis to explain why.
God, it's so fucking good to be back.
Sympathy for the Devil
So, since it's been... god, it really has been half a decade at this point, huh? Since it's been five years since I first watched and blogged about Kimi ni Todoke, here's a quick rundown of my thoughts for the countless among you who weren't around for it: I fucking love this show so much. Not only is it one of the most achingly sweet shoujo rom-coms out there, but the protagonist Sawako Kuronoma so perfectly captures my experience of teenage awkwardness and uncertainty that I swear the author was taking notes from my life. It's a story about growing up on the spectrum, whether it realizes it or not, about the difficulty of communication when you can't grasp the norms everyone else takes for granted. But it's also about how those seeming walls between you and everyone else barely exist at all, and as long as you have the courage to reach out, you'll forge connections wherever you go. It's a feel-good masterpiece the likes of which we so rarely see, and I recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in anime.
And when I first watched the second season all those years ago, I absolutely hated it.
Okay, to be clear, what I hated was the first half of season 2. I hated the miscommunications, I hated the contrived misunderstandings, I hated how the very fabric of the show seemed to be conspiring to force Kazehaya and Sawako apart. By the time we reached the point where they both confess to each other and yet somehow think the other only means "I like you" as a friend, I wanted to rip my hair out of my skull. Mercifully, the second half won me back by finally letting them get together as a couple and indulge in adorable puppy love awkwardness so mind-numbingly sweet I needed an industrial warehouse full of epi pens to make it through unscathed. And I'm not exaggerating, god the final stretch here is some of the cutest shit I've ever seen. But it was really rough going to reach that point through what felt like the absolute nadir of forced misunderstanding plotlines. Nothing but contrivance after contrivance piled on top of each other to force the couple apart long past the point they should have gotten together for the sake of dragging out the will-they-won't-they as long as it could possibly be milked.
And yet, as I got to re-watching this show in preparation for its shockingly announced third season (my excitement is through the goddamn room), dreading the moment I reached season 2 and would have to suffer through this bullshit again, something truly remarkable happened when I finally reached this point: I didn't hate it.
And then something even more remarkable happened: I started to like it.
And then something truly impossible happened: by the time it was over, I couldn't imagine this show without this arc anymore.
Readers, I have never turned around on a show like this. I've had shows I disliked but softened on as time went by, sure, shows I liked but came to love more and more as they lingered in my mind. But this is the first time I've returned to a story arc I actually hated only to end up loving it by the end. And that's the reason I'm returning to my old in-depth analysis blogging to talk about it. Because there's no way to discuss the 180 I've done on Kimi ni Todoke season 2 without breaking it down in as much detail as humanly possible. I don't just want to write a couple paragraphs and be done with it: I want to memorialize this moment. I want to really, truly express why I came around on this arc and why I think it's so meaningful now. Because there's a real conversation to be had here about the the power of storytelling in general and the power of this story in particular. And for a show that's meant so much to me for so long, I can't think of any other way to do it justice.
So let's dive in. Because good god there's a lot to talk about.
Right on Time
So the first question I want to ask right off the bat is: was I wrong to hate this arc the first time around?
Well, I'm not gonna tell you it's free of contrivance. Kazehaya and Sawako's building misunderstanding requires so many different people to misinterpret so many different things in so many carefully staged situations. Not just the lovebirds themselves, but Kent's ill-informed meddling, Kurumi's intentional sabotage, and especially Chizuru's completely oblivious worsening of Kazehaya's insecurities at a critical moment. And that dual-misinterpreted confession scene is still some buuuuuuuuullshiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. There's a reason this arc gets so much shit from me and others; you can practically taste the hand of the author as it shoves all the pieces around to keep this misunderstanding growing well past the point someone should have realized things were getting out of control and stepped in to clear the air. And when you're as anxious as me for these two dorks to just ask each other out already, it's hard to see this as anything but cheap, forced drama from an author desperately trying to stave off the inevitable.
But here's the thing: what if there's an actual point being made here?
See, this arc is such a frustrating experience your first time through that it kind of shuts down any attempts to analyze it on a deeper level. You're so pissed off at being denied the confession that's dangling right in front of your face that you write off the whole thing as nothing but empty delay tactics. And yet, Kazehaya and Sawako get together literally right after this. If this was just a case of dragging out the will-they-won't-they, this misunderstanding would have lasted much longer and done much more damage. But no! They confess properly, they clear everything up, and they're officially going out mere episodes after you're left fuming at their double misinterpretation of each other's "I like you." So while it feels like nothing more than cheap delay tactics in the moment, a full view of the story's trajectory rejects that theory pretty firmly.
And that's the big thing that changed in this re-watch: I already knew this wasn't going to last. This wasn't going to force them apart forever, it was going to get fixed, I didn't have to worry about this relationship I loved so much getting screwed over by coincidence. And without that worry of endless delays, I was able to do what I couldn't my first time through: actually think about what this arc was trying to say. What was the point being made by this part of the story? What was it trying to communicate about Sawako and Kazeyaha's relationship by putting them through the wringer? Was there, in fact, a reason things needed to play out this way?
And believe it or not, the answer turned out to be yes.
End of the Fairy Tale
Sawako and Kazehaya's relationship starts like something out of a fairy tale. Sawako, the lonely rejected girl who can't connect with people and scares off everyone she tries to get close to. Kazehaya, the ever-cheerful prince who sees her plight and reaches out a hand to pull her into the light. And with his endless support and supportive charm, she's able to find her place in the world with friends who love her and a handsome admirer who will always stand by her side. It's every lonely girl's romantic fantasy brought to life in dazzling colors, fully earned by how human the characters feel and how well-realized their growth is. Small wonder we all got so swept up in it we fully bought into the fantasy ourselves.
But people aren't princes and princesses. We're not perfect fairy tale archetypes. We're people; flawed, imperfect people who make mistakes and don't always see things clearly. And as impatient as I was for Kazehaya and Sawako to just get together already, what re-watching season 2 made me realize is that as of season 1, they were not yet in a place where getting together would be a good idea. Season 2 isn't delaying for the sake of delaying, it's holding up a spotlight to these lovebirds' biggest flaws and pointing out that if they don't find a way to overcome these weaknesses, any relationship they start is doomed to failure. It's pulling the curtain down on the fairy tale and forcing you to realize that this sparkly, shiny portrait of two young lovers actually has some deeply unhealthy undercurrents that would shatter their attempts at a happy life together if left untreated. And all the drama and misunderstandings that spring up as a result of those undercurrents are what force Kazehaya and Sawako to truly confront those issues head-on, move past them, and grow into stronger, more self-assured people who can actually be with each other without messing it all up.
Girl in the Gutter
To start with Sawako, because she's much simpler to understand, her problem is the same problem she's had from the start: a complete lack of confidence in herself. As much progress as she's made, she still sees herself as inferior to the people she loves, someone who has to earn their affection by proving she's worthy of it. A life lived isolated from her peers has left her incapable of seeing herself as part of them; they're all so much smarter and kinder and braver than her. How can she consider herself their equal when they're clearly not? And because of that inferiority complex, she's completely incapable of considering the fact that other people might care about her just as passionately as she cares about them. Not just Kazehaya, but Yano and Yoshida as well. She can't picture a world where the people she loves return that love with no caveats or expectations; how can she, when he doesn't consider herself on equal footing with them?
And in Yoshida's beautiful rant to Sawako in episode 6, we see just how painful it is to be on the opposite end of that self-loathing. Sawako isn't just hurting herself by putting herself down, she's hurting everyone who loves her by implying their love is, in some way, untrue. Imagine how it must feel to care so deeply for someone, to devote so much of yourself to them because they mean the world to you, only for them to assume you can't possibly care that much because they don't deserve it. It's legitimately gut-wrenching. And if Sawako had tried to start a relationship with Kazehaya still under that impression, it would've been a disaster. She would've spent the whole time thinking he was just doing her a favor, being nice and helpful like always, hating herself for forcing him to become someone he didn't want to be just for her sake. And Kazehaya would've spent the whole time hurt and frustrated that she would think so little of the feelings he's cultivated for so long. They would've lasted a couple months at most, and it's a genuine question whether they'd even be able to talk to each other anymore when it was over.
In short, Sawako could never be in a healthy relationship with Kazehaya, or anyone, really, until she finally got it through her thick skull that she is exactly as worthy of love as the people around her. Only after Yoshida's rant does she finally realize how much she's been putting everyone else on a pedestal, that the only one who considers her lesser is, well, herself. Kazehaya is no god, Yano and Yoshida are no angels; they're people exactly the same as her, flaws and fears and wants and all. And there is nothing Sawako can give them that she doesn't deserve back from them in return. Then, at last, she's able to truly accept that Kazehaya might love her just as she loves him- and more importantly, accept that it's okay for someone like her to be a part of his life. Because this glittering boy who seemed to stand so far above her was, in the end, just as normal as her. And if someone as wonderful as him was just an ordinary person like any other... than maybe she could be just as wonderful.
Boy on a Pedestal
And speaking of Kazehaya, something else this re-watch made clear was that I did not understand his character the first time around. I remember being so annoyed my first time through by how much he started waffling on his feelings in season 2 when he seemed to clear-eyed before. You're a sparkly shoujo pretty boy, what business do you have getting all angsty out of nowhere? But going through it again, no, Kazehaya was fully justified in his concerns. His seemingly effortless cheer is just as much a social mask as Kurumi's pretty popular girl shtick; he just does a much better job of turning it on naturally. But underneath that cheery exterior lies a boy who's riddled with sharp edges. He's impulsive, he's quick to anger, he gets jealous easily, and he's got a genuine possessive streak that flares up basically whenever he thinks there's even a chance Sawako might be in the sights of another guy. The boy is as sweet as they come, but there's a real darkness to him that I didn't really pick up on my first time through because that sweetness was so incredibly blinding.
So when they move into their second year classes and Sawako starts forging new connections well outside her comfort zone? Kazehaya feels that darkness gnawing at him stronger than ever, and it scares him. It scares him to think he might lash out and hurt Sawako with the force of his feelings for her. More than that, though, he's scared of the thought that her lack of feelings for him (by his own thoughts) will only make that possibility an eventuality in time. She's making so many friends and finding so many connections beyond him, and as much as he wants to be proud of her, he also feels like he's losing something precious, something that used to be just between him and her. Something that Kent touches on early in the season is that Kazehaya can't leave people alone when he thinks they're in trouble; he swoops in and lends a helping hand because it's the right thing to do. But there's a world of difference between helping someone in trouble and building a life with them. And the more Sawako finds connections outside of him, the more jealous and uncomfortable he becomes... which only makes him all the more concerned that his gestures of kindness were little more than an attempt to bind her to him like a baby chick to its mother.
The fact of the matter is, Kazehaya and Sawako's relationship as of the start of season 2 is incredibly unbalanced. He's essentially been something like a teacher throughout her first awkward high school year as she began to develop her sense of self, and he's been a wonderful guiding light. But because of that, she puts incredible amounts of trust in him... trust that would be painfully easy for a less well-intentioned person to abuse. Sawako thinks so little of herself, and so highly of Kazehaya, that he could probably ask her to do anything and she would do it, no matter what it would mean for her. And because Kazehaya is so aware of his own demons, he's also aware of how easy it would be for his jealousy to spike out of control and hurt her. He's torn between wanting to hold her fast and never let go and wanting her to leave him behind. Wouldn't it be better for her to stop being so dependent on him, to find happiness in a broader community of people? Wouldn't she be happier- safer- if she could carry her happiness as far away from him as possible?
Golden Goose
Of course, the problem with Kazehaya's perspective is that he's making exactly the same false assumption as Sawako; thinking there's no way they'll be able to see eye to eye because he puts her on too high a pedestal. He's so consumed with thoughts of how much he could hurt her that he's incapable of seeing how much good he brings to her life. There's a great moment where Pin calls him out for this kind of selfish thinking; for all his claims of wanting to do the best for her, his own feelings are the only things he's really taking into account. He's so obsessed with his own way of seeing things that he never stopped to consider what Sawako thought of their relationship, never considered that someone as honest and straightforward as her might also have feelings she was too scared to talk about. So while Sawako needed to realize she was just as worthy of love as everyone else, Kazehaya needed to come to terms with the fact that everyone else is just as flawed as him in their own ways. Everyone else has doubts, hidden desires, questions on how to move forward with no easy answers. But just because you can't be sure of everything is no excuse not to try.
On that subject, something else I really came to appreciate on this re-watch is how Kent serves as a foil for Kazehaya. He's essentially the person Kazehaya is afraid of becoming: someone who does good deeds and helps people not out of a genuine love for the people he cares about, but as an ego-boost to fuel his sense of self-importance. Yes, maybe Kent has good intentions, and he certainly did some good for Sawako helping her settle into her new class, but when push came to shove, his sense of self-righteousness won out over his desire to do the right thing, and thanks to his own misinterpretation of Kazehaya's feelings, he meddled in ways that almost drove Sawako and Kazehaya apart for good. He was so convinced his perspective on what was happening was correct that he never stopped to wonder if he was doing more harm than good until he'd almost ruined everything forever. And Kazehaya is so terrified of becoming that kind of person- or the thought that maybe he already is- that he pulls farther and farther away from her rather than try and fix things upright. It's only when he finds the courage to be as honest and straightforward as Sawako, doubts be damned, that he's able to meet her on equal footing, see her clearly for the first time, and embrace the love he was so scared of losing with all his heart.
Hearts Wide Open
And it's that incredible catharsis that officially turned me around on season 2. Seeing that incredible confession scene and all the sugar-bomb adorableness afterwards not as an apology for a season wasted on delay tactics, but the culmination of a genuinely beautiful coming-of-age for both of them, made me realize just how damn important this arc I thought I hated was. Kimi ni Todoke needed to let its characters face their flaws like this. It needed to confront their worst aspects to they could grow beyond them. It's only now that they're truly self-assured people, confident in themselves and each other, that their relationship is able to be so unspeakably, unfathomably delightful. And while there's definitely more than a little narrative railroading to force them into that situation, the payoff is so spectacular than I genuinely don't mind anymore.
So I guess, if you, like me, found yourself groaning throughout Kimi ni Todoke season 2 the first time you watched it, rolling your eyes at the contrivances, yelling at the screen as they kept misunderstanding each other and hating the writers for putting you through such bullshit... give it another look. See it for what it is. I can't promise it'll win you over as fully as it did me, but with the benefit of hindsight, you may just find yourself a new light in what you thought was the darkest corner of the sun.
And with all that said, I'm bumping my season 2 score up from 6.5/10 to:
9/10
God, I'm so fucking happy I decided to rewatch this show. To my old fans, I hope you enjoyed this nostalgic return to form. To my new fans, I hope this was a fun change of pace! If you want to see more writing I've done like this, I've got an enormous backlog of shows I've analyzed like this, so feel free to check them out! And now, let's all wait with fingers crossed that season 3 is just as wonderful as what's come before...

[Translation] Romantic? Date / Love and Hate Quantified 4
The next morning, back in HiMERU's dorm in Seisou Hall
Tumblr media
HiMERU: (In the end, we ran out of time yesterday without receiving a single OK.)
Tumblr media
HiMERU: ("ALKALOID" was still flooded with work assigned to them by ES, so Tatsumi had to go tend to that. "Crazy:B" wasn't as busy, though HiMERU wouldn't dare inform them that he wasn't able to complete his tasks after trying countless things. Any nonsense Amagi spews can easily be ignored, but the idea of Shiina and Oukawa thinking HiMERU is a "useless child" is unacceptable.)
Tumblr media
HiMERU: (And so, HiMERU spent the rest of his day yesterday endlessly playing "Ai-stars" using "SSVRS". The goal is to firstly understand the type of game "Ai-stars" is by playing it. That way, HiMERU may be able to discern what exactly it is the producers want from him and the "correct" answer will be in his grasp. Still, it was awkward to have other familiar male idols whisper flirtations all night...but in order to keep HiMERUs reputation as a "perfect idol", this is just a necessary obstacle to face.)
Tetora: HiMERU-san, HiMERU-san! It's morning~! You gotta get up soon or else you'll be late for school! Wait, HiMERU-san, do you even attend school?
Arashi: No need to force him awake, Tetora-kun. HiMERU-chan was up late last night meddling around with something, so I think we should let him rest.
Tetora: Augh~, now that you mention it, I did hear a lot of mumbling coming over from his bed. I was worried about it, since I couldn't sleep.
Arashi: I didn't take you for the type to worry about that kind of thing, Tetora-kun. Don't be so nervous.
Tetora: I'm jealous of you, Narukami-senpai, you're always able to keep a calm head.
Arashi: Oh, are you implying that I'm insensitive*? Well I was able to sleep fine last night.
HiMERU: ....Good morning, everyone.
Arashi: Oh, he woke up.
Tetora: I'm sorry for waking you up! It's alright if you want to go back to sleep~, we were just getting ready for school!
HiMERU: --Fumu. HiMERU was wondering why he was able to hear everyone but not see them, but it would appear he'd fallen asleep with the "SSVRS" headset on...so he was laying in bed playing "Ai-stars" and fell asleep. Unbelievable.
Tetora: "Ai-star"?
Arashi: Ugh, that game people keep talking about. I'm not a fan of it since they changed my actions with things I'd never personally do.
Tetora: Umy~u. Narukami-senpai, I guess you're not too happy with the idea that your character model could fall in love with a woman.
Arashi: Well, it's just a game--a work of fiction. It doesn't have anything to do with me and it has no connection to real life.
HiMERU: ......
Arashi: ? What's wrong, HiMERU-chan? You're staring....sorry, I'm not judging anyone if who likes "Ai-stars" or anything, even you. It wouldn't be the first time I've been treated as some handsome idol.
HiMERU: No, HiMERU didn't play "Ai-stars" because he liked it...nn?
Arashi: ......?

HiMERU: Narukami-san. What's that mysterious text floating above your head?
Arashi: Text? What?
Tetora: ? Narukami-senpai doesn't have anything written on her head though, HiMERU-san?
Tumblr media
[Nagumo Tetora / Relationship: Stranger / Status: Bad Health (Sleep Deprivation) / Affinity: 34]
HiMERU: ....? Nagumo, you seem to have similar text over your head too.
Tetora: ....? ....? But, I don't see anything?
Arashi: Oh, HiMERU-chan, could it be that you're still tired? Maybe you should get back to bed, then?
HiMERU: It's true though. There's some words above your head saying something about affinity.
Arashi: ? If this is some kind of joke, it's not funny yknow, I don't get it...
Tumblr media

HiMERU: (Seriously, what is this? An illusion? But it looks real...?)
Tatsumi: Hello, hello, is HiMERU-san here?
Tetora: Nn? A visitor? You're "ALKALOID"'s Kazehaya-senpai, right?
Tatsumi: Yes. Good morning, sorry for the early morning visit.
Arashi: Gooood morning~ HiMERU-chan is riiiight here, but theres something wrong and I'm really worried about him yknow? Kazehaya-senpai, would you happen to know anything about this? HiMERU-chan said he was working with you and "ALKALOID"...?
Tatsumi: Yes. I was actually here to ask him a quick question about it.
HiMERU: ........
Tatsumi: Ah, HiMERU-san! Good morning! Fufu, looks like you just woke up…~ HiMERU-san is always so perfect, so it's really refreshing to get to see you so sleepy like this.

HiMERU: This is all so frustrating!
Tatsumi: Eh?! I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to tease you...

HiMERU: (Just what the hell is happening here? Has the world gone crazy, or have "I"?)
(*): When Arashi uses "insensitive" here I don't think she means it like "oh so you think im rude/blunt" but rather I think she means it in a way that's like "oh so you think I can't empathize with him" like. To be emotionally cognizant of someone else's feelings.

One Night Spectacle / Episode 1

Author: Kino Seitaro with Akira
Characters: Kanata, Tatsumi, Hiyori, Arashi, Hokuto
"Instead, I have friends I can rely on. I will never stand alone at the top like my father."
← Previous ✧ Directory ✧ Next →
Location: Old Seisoukan Building
Season: Winter
Time: A few days later.
Tumblr media
Kanata: I have finished~ Tatsumi.
Tatsumi: Thank you very much. You were right on time, Kanata-san.
Kanata: Fufu. "Communal life" must be based on "respect" for others.
On the first day, I was quite "careless", but...
I realized that "Ohisama"-san and "Chief"-san, who are my usual "roommates", are very "considerate" of me.
Hiyori: Mm~ I just do what I normally do. Rinne-senpai has a different rhythm of life, so maybe he's trying to be attentive.
Kanata: Both "Chief"-san and I come from backgrounds different from urban "perfection"~ Maybe he had his own thoughts about it.
Arashi: Come to think of it, surprisingly, everyone seems to have no trouble with living together anymore. All of us are doing well, or maybe we've just gotten used to each other.
With such a unique group of people, it wouldn't be strange if a problem or two arose.
Hokuto: There are some room assignments that make you wonder "why would you put those two together?", but I haven't heard of any big trouble here. Maybe we got into a better place than expected.
Kanata: Anyway, Tatsumi~ I went out of my way to leave the bath "on time". How about you enter soon?
If you don't get in soon, all my efforts will be for "naught".
Tatsumi: Oops. My apologies, the talk went on for too long.
Then, I'm off to take a bath as well. I must warm myself up to avoid catching a cold.
Arashi: Ufufu. I should also get ready for bed soon.
Hokuto-chan, don't stay up late today and go to bed early.
Hokuto: Of course. I've decided to get up earlier than usual this week.
The commotion of the first day has completely settled down, and I've been able to prepare for the reading drama with plenty of time to spare these days. It looks like my wish will come true soon.
Arashi: It's great that your "wish" is tied to the success of the show. I hope you'll help me with my "wish", too.
Hokuto: As much as I'd like to, the costume designs Anzu showed me yesterday were based on Princess Kaguya.
Isn't that something Narukami would call "cute"?
Arashi: But that's so not the same thing. Wearing a specific outfit for work and wearing matching outfits are two very different things.
Hokuto: That's true, but...
As I thought, I still can't say it's going to be the "best broadcast" yet.
Arashi: Really? I think we'll get a passing grade.
Hokuto: Of course, it won't be bad. But, with Tomoe-senpai's retirement...
Hiyori: Hmm. Are you getting all worked up because of me? You're a good junior, aren't you?
Jun-kun also used to be more junior-like when we first met, and he used to be all cute. But recently, he has grown to be rougher towards me!
Hokuto: That's it. That's what we're lacking.
We're playing the roles of a group of classmates, but since we're usually in the positions of seniors and juniors, we haven't been able to close the distance between us when we get into character.
At the rate we're going, we're still far from reaching the end that Tomoe-senpai desires... I feel such a sense of crisis.
Hiyori: Fufu. You're rather hot-blooded. I thought you were the type of person that can firmly draw a line on their emotions, like Hidaka-sensei.
Hokuto: My father is a good example of what not to be. I'm not the kind of great man who can do everything by himself.
Instead, I have friends I can rely on. I will never stand alone at the top like my father.
Hiyori: Fufu. Your family's story is very interesting, but I'm not going to ask you about it.
Either way, I understand Hokuto-kun's point—
We haven't been able to get inside each other's hearts yet. We need time to laugh and grieve more and more together!
Tatsumi: ...Then, our next task is teamwork.
Arashi: Oh my. You've finished bathing already, Kazehaya-senpai?
Tatsumi: No. I will do so afterward. I was just in the dressing room, and I heard talk of something very interesting.
I could sense Hokuto-san's anxiety, so I hurriedly put on my clothes and came back.
Hiyori: Tatsumi-kun sure has a hell of an ear. You also seem to have been eavesdropping on my phone calls.
Tatsumi: It's far from being hellish[1]. I just happened to be there.
Arashi: Ufufu. It's just like "Kazehaya-senpai's Confessional!"
Kanata: Confessional...?
Tatsumi: Yes. It's a radio show in which I serve as the host.
It's a program in which I answer the questions and concerns of listeners and guests, and it seems to be getting a good response.
Kanata: I see. If that is the case, I would like to hear how Tatsumi would respond to Hokuto's "concern".
What can we do to make our relationship more "familiar"?
Tatsumi: Very well. Paradoxically, I think it would be good for us to take a break from practicing.
Kanata: Do you mean taking a "day off" from practice?
Tatsumi: Yes. As I interrupted to say just now, I consider this matter to be a teamwork issue.
How about an increase in the number of casual interactions that are seemingly unrelated to practice?
For example, fulfilling "wishes" outside of practice—Kanata-san's and Arashi-san's desires are of that kind.
Arashi: So that's it. I'm a little worried about missing practice at this stage, but... If we can take the time, I wanna enjoy it ♪
Kanata: I want to "bathe" with everyone too ♪
Hiyori: Mhm, mhm. Then it's decided! It would be unfair to just listen to Hokuto-kun all the time, wouldn't it?
Hokuto: It's both my "wish" and Tomoe-senpai's. Don't make it sound like I'm the only one benefiting from this.
Tumblr media
Hiyori: Ahaha, I don't care about the details!
Tomorrow is a day off from lessons! It's our last chance to freshen up before the show—let's go out and have fun ♪
Maybe we can find the last piece we need there. We may be able to dream of an amazing spectacle...✩
Hiyori uses the term 地獄耳, literally meaning sharp ears. It often refers to a person who is eager to hear about gossip and remember it. It contains 地獄 (jigoku) in it, which means hell. Hence, Tatsumi's reaction.

Hello, random question
Would you recommend watching the kimi ni todoke anime? I know you’re reading the manga but I have easier access to the anime and I’m guessing the live action version want be great. Your posts made me intrigued and want to watch so I’d like to know your opinion
hi anon I say totally go for it !! whether through the anime or the manga or the live action (though I haven't had the chance to check it out yet) I'm always for giving the story of kimi ni todoke a chance. At its core it's a story about reaching — finding the courage in your heart and the strength in yourself to take that terrifying step (slowly, gradually, solidly at times but stumbling and teetering at others) out of your own head to reach those around you: your friends, your family, your crush even your rival!
in that regard I think it's very appropriate that the story is about highschool students (and I say that because I usually have a pretty strong aversion for anything highschool related) because the concerns these kids grapple with and the resolutions they come to are integral to that specific stage of life but it's still incredibly relatable later on. I picked up the manga again because I was seeking the comfort of something familiar but reading it honestly moved me to tears because some of the lessons the characters learn are ones I needed to be reminded of now as a person navigating the loneliness of being in my twenties.
over all it's a very warm very sweet shoujo (with some stereotypical elements true but I personally think that it manages to subvert some of the most annoying cliches of the genre pretty nicely) and while the main selling point for a lot of viewers is the sweet relationship between kazehaya and sawako (and rightfully so I just spent the last two days of my life squealing my head off about them as you are probably already aware) I guarantee you that you'll find no shortage of loveable compelling characters to root for!
if you decide to check it out then happy watching and pls let me know what you think !!

Obbligato: The Punishment of Kaname Tojo - 10
Writer: Akira
Season: Spring, two years ago
Characters: Kaname, Tatsumi
Proofreading: Remi (JP) & honeyspades (ENG)
Translation: Peace
Kaname: Will this make you happy, Mom? Will you understand me, Brother?
Tumblr media
[Read on my blog for the best viewing experience with Oi~ssu ♪]
Kaname: "I know you Special Students may ask why you should care."
"That's why, as the poster child of you all, I'll demonstrate the benefits of it — no, I'll introduce you to a harsh reality."
"At the moment, our unit has a monopoly on nearly all of the work offered to the idols of Reimei Academy."
"These jobs were originally given only to the group that Tatsumi Kazehaya-senpai created..."
"But when he grew ill and wasn't able to perform, I took on the mantle he left behind."
"I was offered so much work, I wasn't able to do it all myself — and so I distributed it to other Special Students and had it done that way."
Tumblr media
Kaname: "How was it, Special Students? Didn't you have fun working as idols?"
"But those jobs didn't count towards you. They were entrusted to the idol Tatsumi Kazehaya-senpai — we were merely acting as his proxies."
"In short, now that he's returned with improved health, there's no need for our involvement."
"I planned to return what was once Tatsumi-senpai's without complaint..."
"On one condition. That he forms a unit with me, as equals, so he won’t do everything on his own."
"From now on, we'll be doing everything that Tatsumi-senpai used to do alone."
"Distributing jobs, selecting suitable members, dividing the income we receive equally among everyone..."
"We'll work together to accomplish all of this together. That way, Tatsumi-senpai's burden is diminished and he remains in good health."
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: "Fufu. When faced with such a passionate explanation, I couldn't help but agree. I could tell that HiMERU-san's feelings were sincere."
"He earnestly wished to help, to stake his life on alleviating my burden."
"No, his true wish was for the two of us to become one. He will become part of me, half of me — the way that the Messiah was an extension of God."
Kaname: "Simply being a follower or subordinate wasn't enough. I wouldn't be able to control him even if I were over his head either. In order to make good use of the unprecedented existence that was Tatsumi Kazehaya, I became a part of him."
"I'm managing the 'face' of the Super Idol Tatsumi Kazehaya, which he himself cannot even control."
"Rather, this is the only way that 'troublemaker' could be controlled."
"With that in mind, I made my decision."
Tatsumi: "Troublemaker, am I? Well, I suppose you're right."
"I pushed others around as I saw fit, claiming it was for their happiness. However, the more I forced it on them, the less happy they were."
"I wish to atone for that. I believe this is the only way that I can."
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: "I couldn't handle it alone. It is impossible for one person."
"That is why I am adding to 'myself'. While I am only one person in the flesh, I will be giving a part of 'me' to HiMERU-san."
"We, as a colony, will be run like this from now. We will survive."
Tumblr media
Kaname: (Ah... My dream, it's come true.)
(I said so, didn't I? I wanted to become you.)
(I wanted to be a brilliant existence, just like you. I wanted to become an idol that could make everyone smile. I wanted to become the precious, irreplaceable light that my mother loved so much.)
(I went to great lengths to make this happen. I even capitalized on the blind trust of the older brother I was so indebted to.)
(That lot in the catacombs called me a traitor for stealing Tatsumi-senpai's fortune away.)
(The Special Students were the same, saying I'd deceived them all for my own gain.)
(But even still, I wanted this.)
Tumblr media
Kaname: (Tatsumi Kazehaya, Tatsumi Kazehaya, Tatsumi Kazehaya—)
(I want to become like you. No, I want to be you.)
(Now, everything will go well. Me, who climbed to the top and became the Special Student everyone would look up to, and Tatsumi-senpai, the savior of the Non-Special Students...)
(By joining forces, every student at Reimei Academy is under our control. The disparity that was the root of everyone's unhappiness will soon disappear.)
(From now on, our unit will assume responsibility of every job that comes in for the idols of Reimei Academy.)
(We'll distribute it fairly between Special and Non-Special Students alike.)
(After that, we'll split the profit fairly between them as well.)
(And at last, we'll have manifested a just and fair world, where no one is discriminated against. We’ll create the very utopia that Tatsumi-senpai envisioned.)
Tumblr media
Kaname: (There'll be some opposition at first, of course. It'll be difficult to stand side-by-side with one another and think of the other side as a comrade.)
(The Special and Non-Special Students hate each other far too much not to fuss.)
(But that's why we're going to change the system, even if we have to do it by force. We'll get rid of the differences between the two of them and erase the line previously drawn.)
(From here on... We will control all of the idol work that comes into Reimei Academy. If you won't become one of 'us', then you can't be an idol.)
Tumblr media
Kaname: ("We" are the only ones who can be idols.)
(That's why everyone'll have to become part of 'us' if they want to keep their heads above water after this.)
(And once they become one of 'us,' there won't be exceptions to the rules. You're treated equally, whether you're a Special Student or not. Even if you hate it.)
(The disparity will disappear. While the Special Students will remain such in name, we'll be the ones who manage the students on behalf of the school.)
(An ideal system.)
(Eventually, we'll expand our sphere of influence — and take control of the whole idol industry. That way, we'll create an ideal world where everyone can be happy.)
(As everything in the industry falls to ruin, we'll live on together just like that.)
(The road to that world is a long and hard one, but...)
(There is hope. Tatsumi Kazehaya is our compass.)
(He really is amazing. He's a true idol — unlike me.)
(Unlike me, who's experienced only with mistakes.)
(Everyone's sure to be happy with someone like him at the helm. He'll never abandon me either, even if I'm utterly useless, and let me live as an idol.)
(That's how I'll become an idol.)
Tumblr media
Kaname: (Will this make you happy, Mom?)
(Will you understand me, Brother?)

BTS as shojo manga/anime characters
this is just my opinion but let me know what you think! is there anyone else that you think matches much better?
1. namjoon as kurosaki (dengeki daisy)
Tumblr media
although kurosaki is quite aggressive and has seems to be quite cold, he deeply cares for his loved ones and is quite a mature character. i believe namjoon would be willing to have an unpleasant persona in order to protect someone he loves.
kurosaki is witty, intelligent and sarcastic. he can speak english well but can often be quite clumsy, similar to namjoon.
kurosaki hides his identity to protect someone as it was his friends dying wish, i believe namjoon is loyal and dedicated and so would commit to this role.
(kurosaki is also quite perverted LOL)
kurosaki cares for everyone and often becomes parent like, but there are times where he needs to be cared for and enjoys to be looked after. as namjoon is a leader he is always ready to protect his members and doesn’t often feel comfortable when he is the one who is being taken care of but is still happy and grateful for it.
namjoon is a picky eater similar to kurosaki
2. Jin as tomoe (kamisama kiss)
Tumblr media
tomoe is VERY handsome and those who meet him can barely resist his charms.
tomoe is often strict with nanami (fl) but it is because he cares for her and so often lectures her when she is clumsy and comes home late, similar to jin who is always looking out for his members.
tomoe also is very protective and saves nanami multiple times, i believe jin would give up his life to save the ones he loves as he is very kindhearted and selfless.
tomoe is often quite sarcastic and can seem old fashioned, which reminds me of jin with his dad jokes.
3. yoongi as kyo (fruits basket)
Tumblr media
the first resemblance for me is kyo is a cat and yoongi often reminds everyone of a cat due to his features and soft actions.
at first kyo has a tough outer exterior but as he spends time with tohru, he slowly opens up and heals, becoming more kind and full of live. this is similar to how yoongi used to be referred to as ‘cold’ but as he’s grown up with the boys he has shown his fun, carefree side.
kyo becomes more calm and emotionally mature which is more like yoongi compared to kyo at the start of the series. he was always sensitive and vulnerable.
kyo possesses qualities of empathy, selflessness, patience, supportiveness and often gets embarrassed if people see his soft side- like yoongi.
finally, kyo is protective of those he loves.
4. Jhope as kazehaya (kimi ni todoke)
Tumblr media
kazehaya is always smiling and is known for his big bright smile, similar to hobi.
he’s very lively, outgoing and positive.
he’s always looking after everyone and goes out of his way to cheer his friends up.
he is often too nice for his own good and has a sensitive heart.
but he is also known to be quite scary when he gets angry, like hobi.
he stuck around someone who appeared to be quite cold and enjoyed being the sunshine around her to make her happy and bring out her true personality, hobi is like the sun for bangtan.
5. Jimin as kyouya sata (wolf girl and black prince)
Tumblr media
kyouya has a very sweet and kind outer appearance like jimin.
he is referred to as a prince which is what jimin is most like.
kyouya is secretly sadistic, although jimin isn’t exactly sadistic, he often enjoys teasing the other members.
just like jimin, he gets quite jealous and is possessive over those he loves.
i feel as though jimin has a very cute soft side to him but would ultimately be a tease towards his gf, just like kyouya.
6. Taehyung as Kou (Ao haru ride)
Tumblr media
firstly tae looks like kou and has similar features/ facial expressions.
like kou, tae used to be a lot more childish and outgoing when he was younger, but as he’s grown we have seen a more calm and collected side to him (his outgoing side is still present but he has more qualities now!)
tae can be quite blunt and sarcastic as seen on weverse- like kou. but can also be quite sensitive deep down.
i feel as though tae would suit the role of being quite closed off before opening up to those he likes as he seems to be quite protective of who he is around.
in the manga, we see later on that kou becomes quite mischievous and cheeky as well as more carefree, which is like tae.
7. Jungkook as Hak (Akatsuki na yona)
Tumblr media
firstly jungkook reminds me of have physically as Hak has quite a strong body.
hak is very loyal to those he respects and takes their opinions seriously.
he cares about those he loves and is willing to sacrifice everything because he devotes himself, both emotionally and physically- similar to jungkook.
he loves to tease and is mischievous- jungkook seems like the type to tease his gf(!).
he is protective and fulfils every need.
hak is extremely talented like jungkook especially in martial arts and is one of the strongest fighters in the country (although i do think jk is more similar to usui in this aspect).
finally, he is a romantic and feels love very deeply.

Today is the day of love. And love can come in all forms, parental love, friendship love, romantic love etc. In lieu of today’s Valentine’s Day, I will be doing a cluster review of the anime that has the romance theme.
There may be some 🚨SPOILERS🚨 involved.
1️⃣ Horimiya
Tumblr media
(Picture Source: Horimiya Wiki Fandom thru’ Google Image Search)
Horimiya is about this guy (right), Izumi, who got pulled out of the invisibility veil of his classroom by a popular classmate, Hori.
Well... technically, they met under the circumstance where Izumi had to escort Hori’s younger brother home. From there, a friendship blossomed and Hori and Izumi became very close to the point they were dating.
I would say that this anime is one of those very cozy anime, where you can snuggle in your blanket at the corner of your room and watch it. It often gives you the warmth and affection feelings of a family throughout the series.
But I would admit, like any slice-of-life genre, it can get a bit boring... Usually, this kind of genre is always accompanied with the humour genre, but most of the jokes in this anime wasn’t as funny as I hoped it would be. The only one that I found absolute hilarious was the confession scene Yuki received.
Other than that, it is quite a cozy romance anime you can consider putting in your next watchlist.
Rating: 8⭐/10
TLDR: Cozy romance anime to snuggle up to but may be a bit dry.
2️⃣ Kimi no Todoke
Tumblr media
(Picture Source: IMDB thru’ Google Image Search)
Another anime that is quite similar (in the synopsis) to the previous entry is Kimi ni Todoke. The story tells of a girl, Sawako, whose life got turned around after meeting the class popular guy, Kazehaya.
The reason why Sawako was shunned had to do with the fact that she gave off a very awkward and misunderstood scary aura. Many of her schoolmates attributed her to the famous Japanese horror film character, Sadako. But after consistently bumping into Kazehaya and received a pep talk from him, she gained enough confidence to approach others and took initiative to befriend them.
I may be biased on this anime because Sawako’s school life prior to meeting Kazehaya was something I deeply resonated with. I would recommend people to watch this anime to understand how difficult it was to survive by yourself with no other friends.
Rating: 9⭐/10
TLDR: A wholesome anime where you may constantly be rooting for the protagonist of the story throughout the seasons.
3️⃣ Violet Evergarden
Tumblr media
(Picture Source: IMDB thru’ Google Image Search)
The story revolves around a girl, Violet, who struggles to fit into society and learn about the meaning of the emotion, love. Throughout the series, you will follow Violet on her journey as she meet others and seeking answers for herself.
That’s really all I can say. And.. if you really want to watch this anime, you may need to go to the supermarket and empty out the shelves of tissues, because every single episode is going to make you bawl like a baby.
No, I am not joking.
Really.
Rating: 10⭐/10
I am not rating it that simply because I want you guys to watch it. It is really an excellent anime to watch in my opinion.
TLDR: GET TISSUES! ALL OF THEM!
4️⃣ Kaguya-sama: Love Is War!
Tumblr media
(Picture Source: IMDB thru’ Google Image Search)
This anime is no brainer to be on this cluster list because it is literally about romance.
The romance is actually between Miyuki, the president of the student council, and Kaguya, the vice-president of the student council. It has been a long time since I last watched this anime, hence, I am not entirely sure what happened.
But I remember that both Miyuki and Kaguya are secretly in love with each other but they refused to confess their feelings to each other first. To them, the first person to confess lose this some invisible game they are unconsciously playing.
I have yet to watch the second season, and any others after the first season if there is, but I do hope that I would be able to catch it soon before I get too overwhelmed by my ever-growing list of things to catch up on.
But, honestly, it can get a bit annoying from time to time...
Rating: 7⭐/10
TLDR: Fun to watch the two protagonist hide their feelings for each other but it can get a bit annoying after a while...
