Ferro Rosso Chapter III

Pairing: Charles Leclerc/Female reader digital artist older woman

Summary: on your mids 30’s you never imagine you’d be divorce. To help with the healing process you decide to return to you first love: digital illustration. Posting videos of your art online leads you to work for Ferrari. But you never thought it’d lead you to find somebody that’s going to bring you back to trust again in love.

Notes: This take place this past test week in Bahrain. Charles gave me some good moments to use as inspiration. All these chapters were mostly about y/n / reader's POV. You left for London the next day. The vivid memory of the night before hunted you. Mainly because now you were curious about what could have happened if you stayed. All thought you were convinced that what you did was ok and it saved you and Charles some awkward moments.

He never contacted you either. You took it as a sign, that night was just that for him as well.

The week after the art piece that you made for him was scheduled to be delivered. Your agent Sarah called you to let you know that the piece was being packed. You rushed to her office to personally make sure that everything was ok. It was your first artwork after all. Once it was packed you slipped a note inside the package. “It’s just a thank you note to my first client”. You tell Sarah.

A week later the art piece should have arrived to its destiny days ago. No word of Charles about it. The days had flown by fast as you were so busy with your new blooming art studio, your agent did a good job finding clients for you. Sailing for a high-profile client like Charles did well for you. You had to admit that. 

Still no word of him. You are not sure why, but you decided to send him a text, just a cool casual message to see if everything was ok with the art piece.

“Hey, I don’t know if you had the chance to see the art piece. It arrived ok?” you sent him.

You let your phone aside and continued with your day. A few hours after you checked it, the message was delivered and seen, but there was no response. Oh shit, it’s happening. The ghosted has begun. Or maybe he was too busy, the testing week it’s in a couple of days, the whole f1 army is heading to Bahrain, and maybe he wasn’t even home. Either way the no response was a response itself. So you let it be if he replied ok if not, there is nothing you could do. But you’re sure as hell that you weren't going to make any effort on trying to contact him again.

You were too busy anyways.

That night your agent calls “Go to the link I just sent via email now! you need to see this” she says right after you pick up. You had your laptop with you so you opened your inbox right away “Ok I’m on it, everything ok?” you ask her. “Just watch,” she says and hangs up.

Her answer takes you by surprise. As the link opens you realize it’s a twitch streaming link. And there he is, Charles, being interviewed by an internet company, and at the back wall, your artwork, fully displayed for the world to see. You smiled widely, feeling proud about it. You start to hear the interview about various subjects and then you realize he did get the piece, he did read your message, he must read the note you sent with the piece and still he didn’t contact you. And that was it, you now know he doesn’t want to be in contact with you anymore. You were just that, another woman on his list. You aren’t mad about it, it’s what’s expected from a sports celebrity like him. You're a little ashamed of yourself for giving in to him so easily, but you're both adults and you know the consequences of your actions. That's it, you'll turn this page. Luckily you don't have to see him anymore for a while.

Fuck your luck! The Friday before test week in Bahrain, Ferrari submitted you.

The email was clear "The entire creative team is requested to report to Bharein for the week of testing. Social media strategies will be outlined and tasks distributed for the remainder of the season. Details of flights, accommodation, and other logistics are below".

The trip itself sounds exciting. You have never been in the paddock before, not even in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic opportunity for your work inside and outside of Ferrari. You’ll have to meet again. Charles will surely behave as professionally as ever, and more so with all the press and co-workers around. And you plan to do the same. Any vestige from that night is already in the past. The plan is perfect: avoid him at all costs, only if it is absolutely necessary to have contact with him. That was your brilliant plan.

Bahrain is all exotic to you. From the language to the architecture, the culture, the food, everything. So you couldn't be more excited to be there. Armed with your work tools. Totally determined to focus on your work.

The first day was everything to settle in the hotel room. Meet up with some teammates.

For the first morning of practice at the circuit everyone was present. Everyone, including the pilots. Including Charles.

You didn't need to be in the garage specifically so you did your best to stay in the hospitality area, away from any path that might cross you with Charles.

But you couldn't avoid Carlos in the parking lot. "What are you doing here?" He was surprised by you when he saw you dragging your equipment. He quickly helped you with your things.

"I know, right? If Ferrari didn't need me, I'd be in London in my studio, believe me," you answer as they walk to the entrance with his girlfriend and his manager.

Once they provide your identities and enter the circuit, he introduces you to his girlfriend and his manager. "So you're going to be here all week?" Carlos asks.

"Yes, it seems that way" you reply as you hurry to your first meeting of the day.

"Someone's going to be happy," he mutters under his breath as he raises his eyebrows. He clearly knows something.

Your heart stops at the first hint on the topic "What?" You respond calmly trying not to show how uncomfortable his expression made you.

"You'll see" he answers, laughing and walking to the opposite side that you are going, in the direction of the hospitality area, not allowing you to ask another question.

Great! Carlos knows. What a gentleman Charles has turned out to be, you think to yourself. If he told Carlos, who knows who else he told? Now you are upset.

Even though the morning is all about work, you can't get what Carlos told you out of your head. Who else knows? You don't want that to interfere with your work. That is going great by the way.

The first to test that day in the morning is Carlos, and the whole team meets at the side of the circuit to take pictures of the car on the track. You don't have to be there, but you go anyway to see for yourself what a car, from the company you work for, flies on track.

It's quite a press commotion when each driver steps into the pitlane. They all go through there. And you get used to the movement of people. 

During the morning you notice the flurry of cameras when Charles arrives. He goes straight to the track engineers. You can see him in the distance, almost certainly he doesn't see you. And you try to stay out of his sight.

The morning passes, and everyone goes to lunch. If there is one thing that you like, it is to have a quiet lunch, without telephones, without computers. Just you and your food for a few minutes. You go somewhere outside the hospitality area, sit and enjoy your lunch in the sun, watching people walk by. Enjoying the moment. When you finish, you return to the hospitality area, but not before verifying that Charles is not there. Everything is going well.

When the afternoon tests are about to start, your team leader asks you to be the one to go to the garage to take pictures of Charles. The rest of the team is assigned to edit the morning images. How can you refuse? You have no excuse. Being the new one on the team you can not refuse either.

You take a deep breath as you walk to the garage. Everything will be fine, you are a professional doing your job and so is he. You'll kindly greet everyone and do your job.

When you get to the garage the mood is not the best. Apparently, Charles' car is having problems on the track and everyone is listening to his comments on the radio. Someone hands you your headphones to listen to the radio. There you are dressed in your Ferrari uniform holding your camera.

Charles is giving opinions and technical comments on the car. He doesn't sound very happy. In fact, he is quite upset.

When you hear the team tell him to go to the pits your heart starts to beat fast.

When the car arrives and the mechanics start to put it in the garage, you put the camera on your face and start taking pictures. Maybe behind the camera, he doesn't recognize you.

When he gets out of the car he doesn't say much, he just goes to the back of the garage. You don't follow it too closely, you just take pictures from a distance. When he takes off his helmet and starts talking to an engineer, you can see his upset face through the camera lens.

He talks and talks to his engineer as he looks around the garage.

When he sees you, he stops, he seems to recognize you. He stares at you but continues talking to his engineer. At that moment a mechanic passes in front of you and you have to take off your face camera.

Now he can see you. You hesitate to look at him again but do so anyway. You look at him and try to smile. He instead says something to the man in front of him. The man turns and he looks at you.

Charles doesn't stop looking at you while he talks to him, he's not happy to see you.

You think that he is not being professional at all. At least it seems like he's not handling the fact that you're there very well. But don't worry too much, you can be there, it's your job, he can't do much about it.

You continue at work, taking photos of him, of the car, of the mechanics. Everything your leader asked you to do. Totally ignoring what Charles is saying or doing.

After a few minutes, another man approaches you, and you recognize him as Charles's performance trainer/assistant.

"I'm sorry but I'm going to have to ask you to leave the garage," he tells you, he seems embarrassed to ask you. "I know you're allowed to be here, but now is not a good time for this," he tells you, pointing at your camera.

You immediately look at Charles, who is further back, taking off his shoulders the racing suit. He's staring at you.

"I'm just doing my job," you reply, turning your attention to the man in front of you.

"I know, I'll explain it to your boss, don't worry" he answers, trying not to speak too loud.

You take a deep breath annoyed, you know it was asked by Charles. He is definitely not being professional.

You turn around and start walking toward the back of the garage, you walk past Charles, who keeps staring at you. When you walk past him you look into his eyes, now you're mad at him. He doesn't answer your messages and now he is interfering with your work.

Your look is more than enough to let him know that everything is not ok.

You walk past him and head to the back hallways of the garage. You're muttering annoyed. Who does he think he is? He is not your boss. Your thoughts go through your mind at thousands of miles per hour. Making you mad. 

When you are going through the corridor farthest from the garage, you feel a hand grabbing your arm, making you stop.

You look at the hand, the arm, and find Charles. Red eyes and sweaty. He pushes you into a corner against a wall. "What are you doing here?" he whispers, looking around.

"I'm doing my job" you answer looking into his eyes and trying to remove his hand from your arm.

"In the garage? Do you have to be here in the garage?" He says he approaches your face. You can feel the heat of his body having him so close.

"Yes, my boss sent me to take the photos, I'm doing my job Mr. Leclerc," you tell him ironically. You keep trying to remove his hand from your arm.

He grabs you firmly by the forearm "I don't want you there" he says even closer to your face.

He looks upset, his eyes are in flames, you don't know if it's because of anger or he's just tired.

"It's not your decision" you answer taking his hand with yours and trying to remove each finger from your forearm "This is very professional of you Charles," you say looking into his eyes, now you are challenging him. It's not just about what just happened, it's about everything that happened before.

He moves a few inches away from your face at your response "And who makes the decisions? You?" He shows a wry smile.

You clench your jaw trying to control yourself "Stop before we both say things we don't have to say to each other. We barely know each other. Please let me do my job."

He keeps his gaze on yours as if analyzing your words.

 You can't guess what he's feeling. Anger? Annoyance?

Some voices are echoing in the hallway. You two look towards where the voices are heard.

"We'll talk about this later, okay?" he asks in a hurry, separating from you.

"I don't think so" you answer

"Oh yes, yes, you and I are going to talk," he tells you, pointing to the space between you and him and walking back towards the exit.

Before leaving he looks at you one more time. He leaves you fuming in anger. 

The day goes on anyway, and you don't think about wasting time thinking about what happened in the garage. You don't think about crossing paths with him either. At the end of the day, everyone prepares to go to their hotel. You gather your things and head to the parking lot for your car, practically dragging all your things. You are already calmer on the subject, you have not had time to think about it much. You arrive at the parking lot, and there are people around leaving but everyone is so tired that nobody pays much attention to the others. When you're getting to your car, you look for the keys in your wallet.

Someone gets out of the driver's seat of the car next to you. "I thought you were never coming out," someone tells you. You turn around scared to see who he is. "What the hell are you doing?! You scared me Charles!" you almost drop all the things you carry in your hands.

"Sorry, I was waiting for you," he says approaching you to help you with the things you carry.

You take a step back away from him "I really don't think it's a good idea" you answer.

"We can do this out here in front of everyone or we can get in the car and talk quietly," he tells you looking into your eyes and pointing to his car. You just look at him and nod grumbling. He takes your things and helps you load everything into his car.

Once inside the car and you close the doors. You cross your arms over your chest, you feel very vulnerable right now.

"Sorry about today, I wasn't having a good day," he tells you looking straight ahead through the window.

"It wasn’t my fault, I was doing my job" you reply.

"I can't believe what you're telling me" he answers annoyed and turning to you "You leave in the middle of the night without saying anything and you think that I won't have anything to say to you when we meet again, you're incredible y/n," he says ironically.

"I made it easy for both of us Charles. It would be awkward for both of us if I stayed" you answer looking at him, you really think you did the right thing.

He narrows his eyes not believing what he's hearing “You made it easy for both of us?! Is that what you think?!” He slams his fists on the steering wheel “Can you explain to me why you think it would be uncomfortable?” He asks you.

"It was just sex! I saved you the time of doing the whole speech. I'm a grown person, I know how this works" you reply.

"My God! You really don't know me to talk like that. But if you think it's the right thing to do, so be it. I'm also a grown person who knows how things work, but I'm not rude. I would have said goodbye." he answers. His hands clinging to the wheel.

His words surprise you. You look out the passenger window. You think for a few seconds in silence. Deep inside you know he's right. He is right. And you hated that.

You look forward, uncrossing your arms "You’re right, I was rude. I'm sorry, I think I panicked. I'm not used to doing that" you answer looking into his eyes. And for the first time, you admit to yourself that you did not act well.

Charles takes a deep breath and releases his hands from the wheel. "Okay, I understand."

"I don't want this, I don't want things to get tense between us, especially now that we work together, we'll see each other often, and I'm really not used to these things," you say looking at your hands that are on your legs. "I'm old school," you tell him, smirking.

He smiles relieved. "I don't want this either, it wasn't that bad that night was it?" he asks you with a mischievous smile.

He smiles at her "Not at all." You answer, both look into each other's eyes. He seems to be sincere with you.

"You didn't try to talk to me either" you tell him playing with your car keys between your fingers.

"I was upset, what did you want me to do?" he tells you in a low tone "I thought you didn't want to hear from me."

You nod "Okay, I deserve that." You look up to meet his eyes.

The two look at each other for a few seconds. Neither of you are sure what to do now.

"I have to go to the hotel" you finally tell him. "We have a few days full of work ahead of us."

"Yes" he says smiling. "Are we okay with you and me then?"

You let out a laugh "Yes, we are" you tell him feeling relief. "Friends?" You extend your hand in a kind of peace pact.

He shakes his head to both sides as a sign of doubt "Maybe friends who work together and have sex would be better?" he tells you shaking your hand.

"My God, that sounds dangerous" you both shake hands laughing.

"It doesn't have to be, we just have to be careful" he says.

"I don't think it's a good idea, Charles," you tell him, realizing that it will be a roller coaster of emotions that you don't know if you can handle if you accept.

"Are you telling me you don't want any more of that?" he tells you taking your hand to his lips and kissing it softly. He knows what he is doing. And you know the effect that can have on you.

You bite your lips at the sensation that a simple contact causes you. "Go slow, we could crash" you reply caressing his lips with your thumb.

He just stares at you while you do it.

He gets closer to you a little, waiting for your reaction. You close the space between you and him and press your lips against his. You inhale deeply as you feel the warmth of his lips on yours. He takes your chin in his hand and presses his face into a deep kiss. All the tension between the two seems to vanish with that kiss.

You open your mouth allowing access to his tongue. Both enjoy the taste of the other in their mouths.

The kiss lasts a few seconds. You both are aware of who can see them.

When you separate, you both open your eyes, a barrier seems to have been broken. A barrier that you don't know where it will take you, but you want to experience that path.

"We have to go, we have a hard day at work tomorrow," he says.

You savor that kiss on your lips and accept. "Yes work, that's why we're here"

He settles in his seat and starts the car "I'll take you to the hotel, I'll send someone to pick up your car"

You also settle in the seat while you fasten the seat belt.

A few blocks before,  both agree that you will walk to the hotel not to arouse suspicion. The journey is not long, but the atmosphere between the two is much more relaxed than before. And you talk about various things along the way.

"Wait! You said something to Carlos right?" you tell him before opening the car door.

"That bastard can't keep his mouth shut" he answers laughing "I didn't tell him anything, he doesn't know because I told him. But don't worry, nobody else knows" he assures you.

"I'm going to kill you if you ruin this for me Charles" you warn him, you're enjoying your new job and you don't want to ruin it.

"I won't, don't worry, it would be a mistake for both of us" he reassures you.

"Okay," you say opening the car door and carrying your bags and backpack. "I'll see you at the track then," you tell him getting out of the car.

"Goodbye, friend that I have sex with," he tells you, giving you a wink.

"You're a dork," you tell him laughing as you close the door.

You walk a short distance to the hotel. You feel more relieved that things have been cleared up. And a little excited about what can happen in the future.

There is not much else to do in the hotel that night. Just dinner and sleep. You have to get up early tomorrow.

The alarm goes off at 5.50 am. Getting up is not easy, these are intense days for everyone.

Your team agreed to have breakfast together at 6.30 am at the hotel.

Everyone meets as agreed in the hotel breakfast room. Each part of the team is already preparing to go to the circuit.

You are drinking your coffee with the others when one of your co-workers nudges you "Guess who didn't sleep much last night?" she tells you under her breath looking towards the entrance of the room.

You look at her not understanding what she is talking about, she just signals with her eyes toward the door of the room.

Charles is entering the room accompanied by a girl, she is holding his hand as they walk towards the buffet breakfast table.

Your heart sinks when you realize what is happening.

Of course, he is with someone! How could you be so naive?

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 26 part one

I’m Coming Up So You Better Get This Party Started

The Lans arrive just in time to see Cousin Jin Zixun hassling Su She, and they wonder how he has the fucking nerve to come to a party that they are also invited to. 

Su she was invited by his new best friend Jin Guangyao, who deploys a full-on charm attack, wrapping Su She permanently around his little finger. 

Smoother than the Lanling weather that’s how he holds himself together Watch out, he’ll charm you 

Jin Guangyao grew up with women who earned their living by being charming, pleasant, and hiding their true thoughts from their clients, and he appears to have mastered this useful skill set. With Su She, he exudes confidence and authority, allowing the lesser man to bask in his attention.

With Zewu Jun he deploys helplessness and embarrassment, effectively controlling a man with much greater power than his own.

Lan Xichen confronts him about Su She's presence, and Jin Guangyao pretends he didn't know that Su She was ex-Lan. This seems super unlikely, given that JGY is good at collecting information that he can use to fuck with people, and also that he sheltered Lan Xichen from the Wens directly after Su She betrayed him.

Lan Xichen seems like he doesn't believe what JGY is telling him but then he decides to drop it, passive-aggressively saying that since JGY is uninformed, he's not guilty. Lan Xichen is actually assuming a lot here about his right to tell Jin Guangyao who to invite and who to shun, but JGY doesn't push back. Lying is so much simpler.

Su She wins for most unintentionally sarcastic-seeming toasting expression.

Jiang Cheng, Party Animal

Jiang Cheng arrives at the party, bringing his Jiang retinue and his bad temper. He super obviously casts around to try to find Wei Wuxian, who already told him he probably wasn't coming to the party.

Jiang Cheng is that guy who only comes to a party because the girl he likes said she was thinking about going, and then he spends the whole party saying "hey have you seen Mei Lin? She said she was going to be here but I don't see her."

Jin Guangyao formally congratulates Jiang Cheng on the Jiang clan's success in the hunt, and Jin Guangshan toasts him. As always, Jiang Cheng reacts to praise from authority figures like it's rain in the desert, smiling from ear to ear. He says that the Jiang Clan will donate the prey from the hunt to the other gentry clans. ...what?

Are we seriously saying that when these dudes go night hunting it's not just to remove dangerous bad stuff, it's for profit? 

Like, do they eat monsters? Wear their fur? Make leather from their skin? Carve jewelry from their claws? Is Jiang Cheng wearing a purple monster's skin right now? (There will be an art prompt at the end of this post)

Forecast: Hazing

Having gotten the single pleasant part of the banquet over with, it's time for the Jins to pick on the Lans. Cousin Jin Zixun goads Lan Xichen into taking a drink with him, knowing that this is (mostly) against Lan rules. Jin Guangyao tries to stop him by saying, hilariously, that it's bad to drink and fly on a sword, but CJZX waves this away and keeps pushing, saying that if Lan Xichen won't drink, it's an insult to him.

A random cultivator who is definitely on the Jin payroll backs him up, saying that teetotaling is for losers, and Captain Blowhard boisterously agrees. Loudly agreeing with powerful people is the Yao clan's signature martial arts skill.

Jin Guangyao looks embarrassed and helpless, which is, as mentioned before, his own signature skill. But he's just playing his own part in this piece of theater; everything happening at this party (so far) is happening for the benefit of the Jin Clan. Cousin Jin Zixun is an ass, but he's not actually a loose cannon, and Jin Guangshan is clearly enjoying the Lans' discomfort.

Why? This entire party, the hunt, everything he's done since the end of the Sunshot campaign, has been designed to increase and consolidate his power. His main goal is to get the Yin Tiger seal, but reducing the status of the Lans is also a good move for him. The Lans have been the strongest opponents to the use of resentful energy, and worked the hardest to conceal and contain the Yin iron in the past. If he wants to use resentful energy as part of his own cultivation, he needs them to chill. 

So this is a bit of a test; will they comply with the will of the larger group in order to avoid conflict, or will they refuse, which will allow him to label them as iconoclastic weirdos?. 

Lan Xichen takes a long look at his brother, who is expressing all sorts of emotions while keeping his face very very still. 

At a guess, he is thinking that this entire party is bullshit, that his brother's willingness to play along with these assholes is bullshit, that being viciously beaten for having a single drink in his life was bullshit, that Wei Wuxian not being here right now is bullshit.

Lan Xichen picks the "go along, get along" path, having his drink and using his magic skill of anti-intoxication to neutralize it, as he'd done previously when drinking with Wei Wuxian. 

Cousin Jin Zixun picks on Lan Wangji next, and since he cannot magically or even non-magically tolerate alcohol, there is a real risk to his reputation if he drinks. But Lan Wangji breaks rules when he feels like it, not when people tell him to. He pointedly ignores the offered drink while Lan Xichen looks worried. 

The rest of the party guests have a wide variety of reactions, none of them helpful, to these shenanigans. Jin Guanshan's son and heir watches with calm interest as the power dynamics play out.

All of this is actually not great strategy for the Jins. The Lans don't play little social games to gain power, because all that time they spend not drinking, not gossiping, and not doing other stuff? Is spent cultivating and practicing sword and musical battle forms. The Lan Bros are overwhelmingly powerful as individuals, and embarrassing them won't change that.

It's moot, ultimately, because Wei Wuxian chooses this moment to arrive.

Darkness Visible

Wei Wuxian actually made a big impressive stair-climbing entrance to Jinlintai a few minutes ago, with camera work echoing Lan Wangji's stair climb at the Wen Indoctrination Bureau from several episodes back. 

But nobody was around to see that, other than us, and when he appears at the party it's in stealth mode; he steps into the frame from out of nowhere, and drinks Lan Wangji's unwanted drink.

Lan Wangji responds by looking at him like this for the next several minutes.

Wei Wuxian doesn't have time for their usual sport of Extreme Gazing, though; he came for a reason, which is to find and rescue Wen Ning. He gets right to it, asking Cousin Jin Zixun where he's keeping him.

Jiang Cheng, who is the king of worrying about the wrong fucking thing, jumps up to try to stop Wei Wuxian from talking. Like, seriously, he's ok with the Jins trying to take his clan's special extreme weapon, but he's not ok with his head disciple being rude in order to fulfill a whopper of a life debt--Jiang Cheng's life debt, in particular--or being rude in order to preserve the clan's independence.

Jin Guangshan decides this is a good moment to bring up the Yin tiger amulet. Wei Wuxian pushes back, hard, pointing out exactly what Jin Guangshan is doing. He says he's setting himself up to be a new Wen Ruohan. 

Lan Wangji pays close attention to Wei Wuxian's reasoning here, and so does Nie Mingjue, unless he’s just trying to mask his confusion. 

Jiang Cheng is too busy being horrified to listen, apparently. Or he just doesn’t agree, preferring to be reduced to a secondary authority, rather than defy a primary authority.

Wei Wuxian is, of course, all about independence; he was literally born to be a rogue cultivator, despite being dubbed “patriarch” himself, not long after this. 

Let’s Go Crazy Let’s Get Nuts

Wei Wuxian gets tired of the scene and decides to lose his temper. He makes a show of being enraged, and he genuinely is angry, but I don't think he's out of control, this time.  

He acts like he's out of control in order to scare everyone, but he makes his points very clearly, reminding everyone that he has power they don't have, that he's good at killing, that he's not patient, and that his teeth are nicer than everybody else’s. 

Everybody in the room freaks out to one degree or another--except Jin Guangshan, who is apparently too pissed off to be scared.

It's hilarious that Jin Guangshan thought he was going to get Wei Wuxian to hand the Yin Tiger amulet over by creating a complex system of social pressure against him. Wei Wuxian's favorite way of responding to social pressure is to escalate it into violence, regardless of the consequences; he's been doing that at least since Gusu Summer School and probably a lot longer. Jin Guangshan should know this, given how many beatings his son has taken from Wei Wuxian over the years.

Wei Wuxian does a fantastically sexy scary, theatrical countdown, and Cousin Jin Zixun caves in and gives him the information he wants. It's worth noticing that even under threat of death, CJZX doesn't comply until he visually checks in with his clan leader. He’s genuinely a bad person, yes, but he’s a loyal soldier, which is what most of these clans value most. 

As soon as he gets what he wants, Wei Wuxian is perfectly, smugly, in control of himself again. Everyone in the room is still stunned and afraid, so Jin Guangshan has achieved that much, at least; nobody likes Wei Wuxian having the Yin tiger seal now, including Jiang Cheng. 

As he leaves, Wei Wuxian has one of those conversations with Lan Wangji in which everything is said in glances in the course of a couple of seconds. 

WWX: I love you, I have to leave you; I've got some shit to take care of and I won't be coming back to all of this. 

LWJ: I love you; I'm probably going to have to fight you; your funeral is going to be so upsetting

Wei Wuxian turns away from everyone, and you can see the weight settling on his shoulders, as he contemplates the choices he just made and the choices that are still ahead of him. 

Jin Guangshan, for the first and only time, loses his temper in front of everybody, literally flipping a table because he's so mad about what just happened.

AFTER

Cardan remained kneeled next to the unconscious girl. His eyes wide and still locked to Jude’s. Around them the crowd still roared, but for him it was just blurred background noise.

He felt words trapped in his throat. The urge to tell her something. Anything. 

Jude. What the fuck is going on? What are you doing here? Are you ok? You need a doctor.

Nothing came out.

She didn’t say anything either. She kept looking down at him with that odd expression. It was as if the mischievous and teasing girl from before had vanished. In front of him was a fighter, with a look that promised pain for whoever stood in her way.

A hand on his back snapped his attention back. 

“Move, Cardan.” Locke reaching for the girl on the floor. “We need to get her out of here.”

He quickly helped his friend lifting the girl’s feet. Before leaving, he gazed back to Jude one more time, but she had already turned away as a tall man raised her hand above her head and paraded her in front of the audience. 

They kept screaming for The Queen as Cardan crossed the door to the room where he and Locke had left the other unfortunates.

After leaving the girl, Cardan leaned his back against a wall and once more tried to make sense of what he’d just saw.

“It seems like you go for the tough ones, don’t you?” Locke teased, a little hint of nervousness in his words.

“I didn’t know… I mean,” he said. “I thought she was only a guest here or something.”

His friend shrugged. “Maybe she is. People sometimes gets into this things for money or for sport.”

Suddenly, he remembered the exact point of what he’d wanted to say to Locke for the past hours. He straightened and pushed his friend’s shoulder. “What the fuck are we doing here anyway?? You said this was a good job dumbass!”

“Well it is!” He answered, crossing his arms. “If it was a safe or legal event, I didn’t ask. Bartenders who make a lot of questions are not usually hired. And here, my friend, we are making some good money.”

Cardan stared at him.  He was right, he knew that. But still, underground fighting events were deeply illegal. They were since pretty much always but about a decade ago, a similar event had ended up in chaos because rival gang members started a riot. Many people, involved or not, had died. The place was burned down in the process. And it had uncovered several cases of well positioned people involved in drug dealing, women trafficking, among other things. 

Since that day, police had fiercely hunted illegal fighting pits. There were some, of course. But it was rare for anyone to hear about them.

Then again, Cardan knew what it was to have family involved in illegal stuff. And thankfully he’d been able to leave Balekin before he’d messed up more. Or at least he tried. 

Even if he didn’t work with his brother anymore, he was forced to give a fee every month to repay him after one night when Cardan, highly intoxicated, left a warehouse unguarded and several merchandise was stolen. Expensive merchandise. He was going to spend his entire life repaying that mistake. But at least he was on his own, not having to answer any other of Balekin’s calls.

He took a deep breath. He needed to get his shit together. After all the events of the night his thoughts were running full speed, not to mention the headaches the sight of blood and beatings caused him. There was still a faint ringing noise at the back of his mind. 

The door opened and Madoc entered, eyeing all the unconscious bodies laying on the beds. “Good. Leave them there and go back to the bar. Someone will take care of this.”

As they walked back, Cardan eyed the remaining guests. Almost half of them had started to leave after the last encounter, but several other remain. Going back to the gambling tables and talking to each other. He wondered if Jude would still be there, maybe if he-

A hard bump on his shoulder stopped his trail of thoughts, followed by a growl and a hand grabbing his shirt roughly. “Watch it, idiot.” 

He frowned and look up, finding a pair of cruel defying eyes staring back. The same ones he saw when the guy was beating the other one near death. Valerian.

His face and hair were cleaner now, he’d probably washed away the blood after the fight. Still, his expression remained the same. 

Cardan said nothing, if the guy was waiting for an apology he wasn’t going to get it. He might not be a fighter but he was certainly sick of bullies like him. The grip on his shirt didn’t loosen. Grabbing Valerian’s hands he jerked himself off. “I could say the same thing.” Cardan snarled, walking away with Locke.

He only managed a couple of steps before he was pushed to the ground.

The roughness of the floor scratched his forearm. He turned just in time to see Valerian’s fist merely inches from his face.

The next thing Cardan knew, a sharp pain erupted on his jaw throwing him down completely. He could hear Locke yelling something, but before he could turn to face his friend, a heavy body settled on top of him.

People started gathering around them.

Valerian grabbed his shirt again and another blow connected near his eye, blinding him for a moment. Something warm slid down his face. He snarled and grabbed the man’s arm, pushing him away. His fist raised again and Cardan braised himself for the next blow.  

One that never came. 

From one moment to another, the weight over him disappeared with a grunt. He quickly got up, looking at his attacker, who now had a slender arm pulling against his neck. Hard. 

Valerian arched and coughed, rage dancing on his eyes. Behind him, Jude kept janking the man back until they were at safer distance. Then, she let him go and move to stand between him and Cardan. She’d cleaned up too, Cardan noticed. Though she was still wearing the clothes from the match, her hair was loose and the dirt and blood were gone. 

After spitting on the floor, Valerian turned to Jude with gritted teeth, raising up with closed fists as if he were to throw himself against her. Jude just glared at him, fists clenched too. A slight smirk tugging up the corner of her lip.

“Is there any problem here?” Madoc’s strong but calm voice startled him, pulling him out of the scene in front of them. 

The two fighters dropped their defensive pose, eyes still locked at each other’s. 

“There isn’t, General, my apologies.” Valerian muttered. “The barman and I had a little disagreement.” 

“You being a jerk is common knowledge, not a disagreement.” Jude snorted.

The venomous glare he gave her send a shiver through Cardan’s skin. 

“Enough. Everybody back to work now. And you two,” Madoc hissed, pointing at Jude and Valerian. “Drop it. I don’t have time for another of your quarrels today.”

That said, he left, dragging some of the curious spectators back to the gambling tables.

Cardan stood there, not sure if he should approach Jude. Yet.

“You heard your General,” She purred. “Walk.”

Valerian gave a step towards her, baring his teeth. “You won’t be the boss’ favorite forever, bitch.”

Then he was gone. 

Cardan let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.

“Hey man, are you ok?” Locke asked, laying a hand on his shoulder. “I’m sorry, you know I suck at fights, I should’ve-”

“Yeah, it’s ok.” He touched his brow, were Valerian’s blow had opened his skin. His fingers came back bloodied. 

“You should get that checked.” Jude’s voice softer now, the fierce eyes she’d worn at the end of the fight had disappeared too. “I’ll send over a healer.”

She turned to leave, but Cardan reached for her arm, stopping her. “Hey.”

Pulling back her arm, she fixed him an alarmed look. Right, they weren’t supposed to be seen together. He hesitated. The bruise on her cheek looked less swollen now, but it had started to gain a slight purple stain on the center. “Are you alright?” He mumbled, as casually as he could. 

Jude tilted her head and smirked. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that?”

She noticed his clenched teeth and rolled her eyes. “I’m fine, go.”

Cardan nodded and turned to Locke, walking back to their assigned spot. There, Roach ran back and forth, mixing drinks for the clients gathering there. He’d look funny if it wasn’t for his panicked eyes, searching for his partners among the crowd.  

“About damn time!” He growled. “I’ve been attending all of our side for ages! Come here and- shit, Cardan what happened? Did you-”

“We’ll tell you later, let’s get this place free first.” Locke interrupted him, taking his gaze back to his friend’s wound. “You should get that cleaned, I don’t think people will appreciate blood-flavored drinks.”

They both chuckled as Cardan pressed a wet cloth to his brow. 

With Locke’s help, the bar was empty again in a couple of minutes. All the remaining guests were now minding their own business elsewhere.  

Roach sighed, resting his elbows on the table. “This is why I prefer to collect the money, rather than preparing the drinks. All those people are impossible!”

“Well that’s the fun part too.” Cardan sat on the floor, the cloth now extended all over his whole forehead. The places where he’d been hit throbbed harder now than a couple of minutes ago. 

“Yeah, as fun as being beaten just for walking.” Roach laughed. “Man you really have some bad luck.”   

“Not as bad as you’d think! Otherwise he wouldn’t have left with that gir-”

“Shht!” Cardan silenced him, feeling his cheeks slightly warm. “Let’s not talk about that here, her request.”

Locke barked a laugh, throwing another cloth at him. “You’re scared of Madoc, aren’t you? Fuck, I don’t blame you. He seems just ready to shot anyone anytime. But is he scarier than your girl? I wouldn’t dare getting on her way either.” 

They were going to mock him till the end of times, Cardan was sure of that. 

“You must be Cardan.” An unknown voice said, startling the three of them.

He looked up, taking the cloth away. 

A short, slim woman stood behind the bar. Her short hair, frizzled and oddly white, framed her fine features. She wore a blue scrub, and carried a small first aid kit in her right hand.

The healer, he assumed. 

“That’s me.” 

She nodded and started taking things out of the briefcase, alcohol, cotton wool, antiseptic and god knows what else. “Sit here please.” She motioned at the stool in front of her.

Once he did, she started attending his wound. Fast, quiet, efficiently.

“Did Jude send you?” He whispered. 

The healer hummed and nodded in response. Not much of a talker it would seem.

“Is she coming too?” He tried again, feeling dumb. But he needed some answers. 

“Miss Jude has already left the building.” 

Oh. Something sinked inside him. He let her work in silence, wincing just a bit when she pressed some first aid tape over his eyebrow. Had Jude treated her injuries already? He should probably stop thinking about her. She’d left already. 

“I’m done.” The woman’s voice pulled him out of his thoughts. All of her items already packed except for a little pill box. “It will probably sting a little, but it won’t leave any scar. If you experiment any headaches, take one of this pills.” 

Cardan nodded. “Thanks, I will. If you see Jude, tell her I say thank you... Please.”

The girl stared at him. Pondering. Her gaze felt like it could pierce his skull. At last, she sighed. “I will.”

She extended her hand to him, he frowned. An awkward hand-shake, considering she hadn’t gave him one when she arrived. Still, he answered back. 

Then he felt it. 

Something folded between her fingers. 

Trying to keep a steady face, he took it, immediately putting it away from curious eyes. She grabbed her bag, ready to leave when Roach appeared next to them. 

“Uh- excuse me miss, I don’t mean to bother but I cut my finger with a glass a moment ago. And I was wondering if you could- you know.” He babbled and raised his hand, a small gash running along his index.

The healer considered him for a moment, then pulled something from her bag and left it next to Cardan’s pills. “Sorry, I cannot stay.” 

She walked away stiffly, soon disappearing behind some doors. Cardan watched her go.

A muffled laugh sounded behind him. He turned to find Locke covering his mouth in order to avoid the cackle that threatened to come out of it. Roach’s face was the embodiment of embarrassment and failure. 

On the table was a little pink band-aid.

“Nailed it man, NAILED IT!” Locke mocked him. “Please tell me you didn’t actually cut your finger on purpose just to talk to her.” 

“Of course I didn’t you ass! But I might have cut myself because… I was looking at her and didn’t pay attention to the damn broken glass.”

Locke and Cardan looked at each other before both erupted with laughter. Roach’s red ears didn’t help much.

Their jokes continued for a couple of minutes before vanishing completely at the sight of Madoc walking towards them. 

“Well gentleman,” He greeted them. “Your work for today has come to an end. Clean everything and meet me in the kitchens.”

It didn’t take much since they were used to clean as they worked. But still paid a little extra attention into leaving everything impeccable. The last thing they wanted was to owe anything to those people. 

Back in the kitchens, Madoc stood at the center. Waiting. Both of his hands behind him.

“I trust,” He started, glaring deeply at them. “That no word about what happened here today will leave your mouths. Am I correct?”

Cardan didn’t need to be a psychic to know that one of the hands Madoc kept unseen held his gun. 

“You needn’t ask.” Locke answered. “When we accepted the job we knew our lips would be sealed about it, and they’ll remain like that.” 

Well that first part wasn’t entirely true. But his friend had a clever mouth, specially when he needed to save his ass.   

Roach and Cardan swore too they wouldn’t say anything. 

“And if I find out that any of you slipped even the tiniest detail about this, you agree that I’ll have to kill all three of you.” Madoc smiled. “Well not that I’m really asking, but you’re aware of it now.” 

The group remained silent, breaths caught in their throats. 

Once that was cleared, he put away his gun and gave each one a small yellow envelope. “As promised. With a little extra since I had no complains for your work, a difficult thing to accomplish here.” He turned to Cardan. “About the incident with Valerian, I know it wasn’t your fault so, don’t worry about it.” 

Inside the envelope was pure cash. Enough to make Roach whistle. They thanked him and put away their envelopes. 

“There are three steady spots available for our bar zone. The last group, well, liked to gossip a bit too much.” Madoc sneered, clearly enjoying their reactions. Cardan was certain he could notice his pulse under his neck. “Same rules apply. One night every one or two weeks. Same payment, in case you’re interested of course.”

“We are.” Roach and Locke turned to him, wide eyed. The steadiness of his voice surprised even himself. “Consider it done.”

“Good. Keep the uniform then. There is a cab for you outside. I’ll let you know when you’re needed.” 

Outside, they found out most of the cars were already gone. Small groups of people gathered around some of the remaining vehicles to smoke and talk. On the opposite corner, a lonely cab waited for them. 

As soon as they crossed the door, his friend bursted into questions. 

““We are”?? Cardan what the hell were you thinking?!!” Roach nearly shouted. “I won’t deny this is well paid but agreeing to this… I don’t know man-”

Locke didn’t say anything, but his frowned brow was enough.

Cardan stopped in front of them. “Do you really think he was asking? After what he said? We were in this since we arrived, and saying ‘no’ Madoc would’ve only gave him another reason to get rid of us. You can’t- just refuse here, not with this kind of people.”  

A kind that, to his misfortune, he knew quite well. He sighed and passed a hand through his hair.

“I get it, I guess I just need to get used to the idea.” Locke mumbled, looking back to the building.

Roach panicked gaze was still on Cardan. “So this means there’s no way out? Not even a-”

“Fuuuck!” Locke suddenly whispered. “Guys isn’t that Garrett? There, next to the white Audi”

They turned to said car, where a small group of young men shared a bottle of whiskey. Cardan narrowed his eyes a bit but indeed, there he was.

Garrett had worked with them at the bar a couple of years ago, and even though he was a little introverted, Cardan had been good friends with him. Still, he’d left to enter the police academy. At least that’s what Cardan last heard. His normally sandy-coloured hair was dyed black, but that irreverent smirk of his was recognizable anywhere.

“What is he doing here?” He asked, mostly to himself.

The cab driver honked, hurrying them.

Just before closing the door, Cardan glanced back to the group. Garrett stared directly at them, taking a long puff from his cigarette. Then the car started. 

Halfway back to the city, he remembered the paper the healer gave him. With a quick movement, he took it out of his pocket and unfolded it. I was a napkin. With a note. 

I wouldn’t normally offer two for one, but since I didn’t get to say goodbye the way I intended, hopefully this allows me to make up for it some other day.                                                       J.

Under it, a cell phone number. Her cell phone number. 

He grinned and without really thinking about it, he took out his phone and send her a short message. Fuck, would that make him seem desperate? Hopefully not. 

Roach and Locke were talking but he didn’t really paid attention. 

It was until he was folding back Jude’s note that he realized there was something printed on the opposite side of it. Something that made his stomach turned to a knot.

He’d memorice that form since he was a little kid. But the Greenbriar’s shield he’d grown to, had a small “B” at the center in honor to his brother Balekin. 

This one though, had a “D” at that same spot.

Preparing for the Opening

The one thing you need is good weather leading up to a garden opening as even though you might think the garden is in pretty good shape, when you really analyse it as you go round, the list suddenly gets incredibly long!!  Must remember to cut the dead bits out of that, must remember to water and feed something else, actually think I might just move that to a spot about 12″ further down for a better effect and so on.  Luckily despite the desperate need for rain, we did have a little on Sunday which perked everything up, and since then the weather has been perfect for these minor adjustments.  The forecast for the weekend is mixed - it will be cool - good so things dont wilt in unexpected heat, a little rain on Saturday but hopefully not so much as to make mowing and edging a nightmare, but there is a chance of a rather feisty wind on Saturday afternoon which just might spoil the absolutely perfect apple blossom.  Fingers crossed it doesnt materialise.

At last all the clients follow up plants have been delivered to their new homes and I have time to focus on here.  All the sweet peas are now planted out and watered.  The new Agapanthus have been put into the two pots by the topiary owls - these replace an unmatched pair - the right hand one having dwindled to nothing last year.  So the stronger original has been split up - see photos - with much huffing and puffing, and spread between 4 pots at the front of the house. The new ones are called Black Panther - very dark blue - and highly suitable for a house of black labs.

I have risked planting out 3 dahlia Twynings After Eight which are only just poking through, but have marked in the borders where the dahlias will be going.  They look so good in the cold frames and as the night temperatures on Friday are due to drop to 3C it seems silly to risk putting them out just for the opening. I will wait until mid May and then they should be OK.  Equally I am saving the Cosmos and Night Scented Stocks until then, but the snapdragons should be OK now.  We have a good array of things in the greenhouse making it look busy and productive and tomorrow or Friday I shall set up the tomatoes we are keeping - the rest can be sold on the plant stall.

Asparagus is coming on well, and veg are growing and showing - the spinach and chard is OK and the first carrots have now germinated.  Sowed another row this week plus the Beetroot Chioggia with the pink stripes.  More mustard mix is in and a row of Catalogna lettuce which always does well.  The Lakeland lettuces will be ready to plant out in a week or so.  Broad beans have their lower strings in place.  

We seem to have fended off the roe deer for the moment but I must remember to take down all the CDs and weird things before Sunday!  However the mole has popped up again this afternoon.

Yesterday I went all the way to Woodbridge in Suffolk to see a nursery called Botanica as a possible alternative for buying shrubs and trees as my lovely supplier of 23 years is closing down this summer.  The land is being developed for housing - another habitat loss and very sad for all their customers - they have been totally reliable. Was sad to see that glyphosate is still being used in such large quantities - round nearly every margin of every wheat field there is a yellow stripe of dying wheat - to keep back any “weed” that dare move from margin to crop.  Was also horrified by how much the council use around the bases of roadsigns and verge markers - surely they dont think the weeds are going to grow so enormous as to obliterate a road sign?  What a waste of money and time plus such a lot of damage to ecostructures.

The swallows are well established - in and out of the garage all day and it is a joy to listening to their chatter.  We feel the dawn chorus is not so good this year and are wondering why - certainly we are missing pairs of song thrushes this year around the common - perhaps last summers drought meant fewer young due to less slugs and snails in damp places.  We also have the jays of course which could mean everyone lies low so as not to give their nest sites away.  We do have several black caps which is great but the level of warbler song in general is definitely down .....

Wisterias are spectacular - we have two, one I would imagine is good old Prolific, the other the amazing macrobotrys, with racemes about two foot long cascading down over the house windows.  They in tandem with darling Maigold rose will be a sight for Sunday and it is lovely to have the garden open at this slightly different time.

Dogs are fine - Scout is feeling her age a little now, and though she longs to do every walk with her beloved Miss Horta who is currently home, we are having to say no occasionally as her feet are a bit sore nowadays - I know the feeling!  Mavis and Inca however are loving the long outings in the evenings and they sit quietly with whoever is taking them to watch the foxes and deer down in the little valley.  We cannot work out where the earth is, but the hunting is being carried out quite fearlessly in broad daylight - the dog fox is stunning, deep deep chestnut brown.  

Current jobs to do - veg time in abundance, soon time to plant out climbing beans but be patient with the weather being unpredictable.  Watch out for capsid bug on all sage plants and salvias - they leave horrid little shot holes and cause distorting of flower shoots - can be eradicated with soft soap rather than insecticide.  Same applies to aphids on honeysuckle. Also pick off lily beetles and squash - great sport.  Water newly transplanted sweet peas to really get them going and give twigs or string for support down low till they really get going.  Be careful not to cut grass too low in this dry weather - East Anglia - Spray roses with soft soap if aphids about, other wise try and leave them. Keep hydrangeas well watered so they really kick off well later on. Remember that when you cut box towards the month end its not a bad idea to feed it.  This helps to prevent blight getting in and keep an eye open for Box moth - if caught early it can be eradicated.  Final thought, dont try and tidy up everything - remember to leave odd areas of unstrimmed grass, cow parsley, dead nettles etc - they are vital for the ecosystems.

I'm serious, and you know the already. You've hated every real estate agent you've dealt with, couldn't you? CHAPTER 2: THE INTERVIEW Real estate offices will be constantly listing open positions, so it's easy to get the interview. Don't be too nervous, because guess what? You're retained. This isn't an interview, it's a pep talk. You could step in and urinate in the lobby, you're probably yet hired. Their ideal agent is someone who is divorced and miserable, sitting on a pile of alimony hard cash or an available line of credit, and just needs something to continue them busy. Next in line would be someone who's going to be unhappily married, sitting on a pile of cash and / or an available line of credit, and just needs something to keep these products out of the house and away from their spouse. hi all i was hoping you could get some facts/and or legal advice. Ok so i have been renting this car for about 6 month now because i cant afford a down payment for my own. However(bad luck struck) i got into a car accident 2 days after my car insurance lapsed i have since renewed my policy right away with another insurance company that gave me better rates.
