note: this fanfiction is quite old, nearly eight years now. It's the first one I wrote about Solangelo, in response to the fandom's question: “how did Solangelo get together?” I am very attached to this fanfiction, and I hope you enjoy it as well c:

[ CHAPTER 1 ]
FEW DAYS HAD PASSED SINCE THE GREAT BATTLE, and everything seemed to have returned to normal at Camp Half-Blood—or rather, normal for a demigod.
The two rival camps, Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter, had sealed a pact of mutual alliance, swearing not to kill each other, or at least to try not to for the next two centuries. In both camps, there was a new air of peace, free from tension and suspicion, and they began a new chapter in their history: Greeks and Romans united for the first time in hundreds of years. It was what could be defined as a perfect ending, but not for everyone. Not for Nico. At the end of the war, the boy had chosen to open his heart, revealing his feelings to the handsome protagonist of this incredible story, and the result? The half-fish, half-human boy hadn't understood a thing, or at least Nico had seemed that way. He had told Percy that, yes, he had a crush on him for quite some time, but it was just an insignificant crush, and ultimately Percy wasn't really his type.
Nico's type was definitely someone else, but he still wanted to close that self-contained chapter of his life: Percy would never be able to reciprocate his feelings, and while he would remain an excellent friend, a reliable shoulder to lean on, he would never be more than that. And now that he had lifted that heavy burden from his chest, Nico felt truly ready to start over. After saying goodbye to Percy and high-fiving Annabeth, he headed towards the infirmary, where he had an appointment with a son of Apollo who had offered to document all the progress that the son of darkness was making to get back on his feet. Will — that was the name of the boy — had said that if Nico played with his skeleton and shadow friends again, he would visit his father's realm for eternity. Nico didn't like the idea at all and decided to listen to Will and make things easier for him.
He entered the infirmary, settling himself on a clean bed for use. Some beds were still occupied by the various heroes and demigods who had been injured in battle, no serious wounds, no one had lost an arm or an eye, but many had broken leg bones, a couple of ribs, and so on.
The beauty of being a demigod was that wounds healed almost immediately, and this was also accelerated thanks to the food of the gods, if taken in the right doses. However, sometimes that was not enough to heal wounds that were deeper than those caused by a sword. In Nico's case, it would take him at least a whole week to fully recover from the enormous effort that had consumed practically all of his physical energy, making him like a shadow—more or less what Will had explained to him in elementary terms, patiently carving out a moment to explain what had happened.
Nico huffed, leaning forward with his back in a questionable comfortable position, crossing his arms on his knees. He wondered why he had decided to show up so early knowing full well that Will had the shift at the arena, where he was teaching the newbies how to hold a bow and nock an arrow; and even though Will claimed to be mediocre at archery, Nico thought he didn't do too bad. Maybe he wasn't exceptional like many other children of Apollo, but the target was always hit by his arrow.. Without realizing it, the son of Hades curved his lips in a delicate smile at the thought of Will focused and with his face split by an arrow ready to be fired. "I didn't know that even children of Hades could smile" a rather sarcastic voice commented to his left. Nico straightened his back, staring at the boy who had his back to him. "You'd be surprised how many things you don't know about me" he replied to the joke, watching Will as he searched for a particular magical medicine made specifically for the boy. "I hope to learn them soon, then" the boy spoke seriously, without any hint of sarcasm or anything else, as he looked at Nico in the corner of his eye and Nico found himself with nothing else to say at that statement. "Take this, ten drops when you wake up and ten before you go to bed" Will said, handing him a small dark bottle. "What is it?" Nico asked, turning it over in his hand. "An herbal infusion, diluted with a bit of nectar. Take it for a week and don't skip a day" Will recommended. "Okay" promised Nico, without avoiding sighing: he wasn't a big fan of medicine, especially bitter ones. At that grimace, Will couldn't help but smile. "For anything, you know where to find me" added the son of Apollo, accompanying Nico to the door, only turning his gaze away from that pale boy after he was really too far away.

what is his obsession with his feet he wouldn’t even stop talking about the picture of him wearing socks and kicking the air- 😭😭😭😭
jeez and he be talking about how it made him nut and shit like omg i don’t care about his feet what’s so sexy about something you walk on the floor with? is that the sexy part? him stepping on your head with socks on? what’s so hot about that?
but yeah- i don’t have a feet fetish but i do like his hands 🥺
omg the fact that he could use them to- 🫳🏻🍑
*starts screaming* nahhhh all the things i would do to meet him i would kill or give a lap dance just to carry him like he’s princess peach
nvm i don’t think i could carry him, but he can jejeekwkwkwj
he could probably carry me like a baby since i’m not too heavy… but i’d want him to grind on me-
oops sorry pg-13- uh- rainbows and flowers 🌈🌸🌺💐🌷🌹🌼🌻☀️✨
anywho, supreme is too expensive lol and my tatas are big ;(
i’m like idk what size i am i haven’t worn a bra in 6 years- maybe like 28 c of d cup ig it looks big so maybe even dd? (i don’t know my size so-) also, they’re perky too like them pr0nstars which makes it even worse-
i hate my tatas i wish i could donate them to amber or anyone i hate them i would even give them to my little sister like a hand me down so she can have boobs and i can be flat or at least small enough that i don’t have to literally kill myself to make sure i look flat enough when i bind. puberty sucks i wish i never had to go through mean changes and i could look like jonghyun ;(
i’m scared that it may go to my hips and people will see me as a woman i hate it so much i don’t know if the best thing to do is to go to a gender clinic to prevent it from happening but i would try but the uk is shit and is transphobic 😭😭
i literally look like every female character a man written with big boobs tiny waist and big butt (but i barely have hips so… yay…?) istg if i look like miss bellum from the ppg when i turn 25 then imma ☠️
nah my sis doesn’t know what she’s gonna miss like yooo- she could technically go shirtless and get away with it like omg that must feel amazing to be that flat and NO HIPS OR ASS you can live your life not worrying about getting catcalled whilst i get catcalled sometimes or creppy guys touch me like omg i never knew this was a thing in the uk 😭
also thank youuuuuuu i’m gonna shut up now but i love speaking in case you didn’t know hahahahah
mwah byeeeeeeee 😭😭😭
No, no it's fine. I like to talk too. I swear I send my friends like 25 voice memos cause I go on tangents. Then like 5 paragraphs right after the voice messages. Talk as much as you want. Yeahhhh feet fetishes do not make any real sense to me either. Also the fact it's so so so common. Like is this a dormant Victorian era sensibility that gets triggered in some people who see feet and ankles as scandalous and arousing. Also maybe you can find a Calvin Klein sports bra, it's what the supreme one is copying anyway. I got a Calvin Klein sports bra from TJ Maxx\TK Maxx a while ago for like 12 dollars. But new it's like 29 dollars. Aww, I understand, puberty can really suck and being in a body you feel disconnected from while being harassed by creepy guys just makes it harder. I really hope that you'd be able to get where you want to be in your body and you feel like you're suppose to. I'm sure you're still really young and there's so many options. And ugh those creepy guys are literally the worst. Honestly should be locked away. They have no right to touch you. Even though I like my body having a hyper feminine body does make you want to just hideaway. Plus I dress hyper feminine cause it makes me happy, Also I only care about the random women who call me cute. But I once wore like this bodycon mini dress to Home Depot. I know I know but that's like my grocery store dress it's comfy even thought it's short and tight. And I was going to the grocery store after. And like there was an employee who was following me around. Kinda looked like the lead sing of A day to remember. He even followed me into the parking lot where he tried to ask me if I saw some lady in a hat or something like that. I said no and he stayed like right by me while I waited for my aunt to pick me up. Men are creeps. Like if you want to say something say it the first time you see me don't follow me around like weirdo.

[CHAPTER 6]
THEY HAD ALMOST REACHED THE MIDDLE OF THE LAKE when they found themselves capsized in the water.
Nico had been telling him that his arm muscles were sore and he felt like his legs were jelly. Will insisted that he just had to tough it out, that they wanted to reach the other side of the lake. The movements of their arms slowly began to become more and more uncoordinated, and instead of using his legs to push himself forward, Nico thought of using only his shoulders, leaning towards the edge of the boat and inevitably tilting it over completely.
Both ended up soaking wet, followed by the laughter of the nymphs who had seen the scene from afar, then disappearing underwater.
The two boys resurfaced, gasping for breath, with their wet hair falling over their eyes. Neither of them said anything, they just stared at each other in silence before bursting into a lively and contagious laughter. Will ran a hand over his forehead, pushing back his no longer perfect curls that were falling over his eyes. Nico did the same, tucking his hair behind his ears. "Can you swim?" asked Will. Nico nodded, his muscles still hurting quite a bit, but he felt he could still swim a few meters freestyle. "But what about the boat?" he asked, pointing to the capsized boat. Will looked at it, shrugging his shoulders a second later. "A Nymph will take care of it" he said, looking towards an unspecified point in the lake.
The boys swam stroke after stroke until they reached the point where they could touch the bottom and walk the rest of the way, with curious eyes watching them. "By the way, di Angelo, I took a shower this morning" Will said, squeezing the water out of his hair, which was wet all the way down his back. "I already said I'm sorry!" exclaimed Nico dramatically, wringing water from the edges of his shirt. "You actually didn't" Will said seriously, smiling the next moment. "Well, pretend I did" Nico said, looking at Will with a stern expression, wiping droplets from his face and masking a laugh behind his hand. Will rolled his eyes, huffing as if he were really annoyed.
They then made their way back to camp together, with everyone's eyes on them, pointing and chuckling as they passed by. "I'll try to come to the infirmary later" Nico promised. "I'll be waiting you" Will said, breaking into a radiant smile. "See you later!" he exclaimed, heading in the opposite direction to his cabin, with Will following behind, waving as he went to his own cabin to take another shower and change.
In his cabin, Will took a part of the morning that he was supposed to spend with Nico to get himself together. He wiped his face with a towel after finishing his shower, carefully patting down his hair, which was starting to curl up from the steam. He spent a few minutes in front of the mirror, looking at his reflection, thinking about the brief morning he had spent with Nico and the delicate compliment he had received. He quickly got dressed, using the towel to dry his hair. He left the bathroom ready to face a whole day at the infirmary, organizing the inventory in preparation for the end of another year at camp and preparing new infusions. Just as he was closing the bathroom door behind him, a cheerful and sunny Austin entered the cabin. "Was the water warm?" he asked, unable to contain his laughter, dragging Will along with him. "I see the news has already spread" commented Will, looking for his orange flip-flops. "Of course!" confirmed his brother, lying down on his own bed, taking out his iPod to find a song by Bo Diddley. "So, you and di Angelo…" he said suggestively. "Me and Nico what?" asked Will, not understanding where the boy was going with this. "Come on, Will, you're always glued to him" continued Austin, finding the song he was looking for. "So what?" he asked, laughing. Austin huffed, rolling his eyes. "There's nothing going on" he said. "We're just friends" he added quickly. "If you say so—" smiled Austin, putting an earphone in his ear. "That's it" confirmed quickly Will, unable to suppress a slight grimace. "I have to go, don't make a mess" he said, leaving the cabin with Austin waving goodbye.
In cabin 13, Nico had just finished resting after a long shower. He had spent the time under the warm shower head reflecting on the morning spent with Will, the empty feeling in his stomach that didn't leave him even for a moment when he was alone in the boat with him, the easy laughter he caused, and above all that strange feeling of just feeling like a normal boy in his presence. In his room, he started polishing his sword, which he had once again left in the cabin. He hadn't really touched it for a long time, except for the training sessions in the arena. He didn't miss fighting against monsters, he wasn't really excited about it, and maybe because he knew where all those souls that would be reborn were headed. At the thought, a cold shiver ran down his back, he hated going back to that horrible place in his mind. He desperately wanted to forget it, just like he had forgotten everything that had happened before. He sighed, focusing on the weapon in his hand, pulling it up by the hilt and holding it up to the light. He tied it to his belt, leaving the cabin and heading straight to the arena.
Noticing that Jason hadn't arrived yet, Nico was quite surprised. There were still some guys struggling with their training, many of whom were freshmen who had arrived during the year. Some were around Nico's age when he first came to the camp, while others seemed to be slightly older. They fought brilliantly, considering there hadn't been much time to train the new demigods. The boy stepped aside, sitting on a parapet to watch the groups practicing hitting the dummies or dueling in pairs. He wasn't staring at any particular group, but rather watching them all, fascinated and curious about the techniques and strategies they had in mind. He remembered that he too would have loved to learn those techniques instead of learning how to survive on his own in the company of a talkative ghost who recalled the glorious moments of his life at night. "What are you thinking about?" asked a boy who had just sat down next to Nico. The boy shrugged, coming out of his bitter memories. "Nothing in particular" he replied. Jason nodded, pretending to believe it. Nico had always been a great mystery, impenetrable, as if his feelings were locked inside a safe and no one had a way to get in. "I heard about the lake" Jason changed the subject. "Nice dive, by the way" he added, not masking his irony. Nico nodded at the joke, avoiding replying. "Do you want to go?" he asked, pointing to the slowly emptying field. "I'll follow you!" exclaimed Jason, following Nico into the semi-deserted arena. "No aerial acrobatics" Nico said, laying down some rules. "No skeletons" Jason hurriedly added. "Everything else is fair game" Nico concluded with a sinister smile, shaking Jason's hand as if they had just signed a contract.
Both drew their swords, leaving a bit of space between them, waiting for someone to make the first move. They looked at each other in the eyes, studying each other's faces, trying to understand what was going through their opponent's mind. In Nico's opinion, his challenger was not easy to read at all. He had received a different kind of training, made up of rules and strategies. However, Nico could also say that he had a good set of strategies that had saved him more than once in hand-to-hand combat when he wandered alone in the outside world. They moved slowly, Jason was tense, hoping that Nico would make the first move, yet he was still there, impassive. He tried to study him to understand his tactics, but it was like reading a blank sheet of paper. He decided to launch himself against Nico, who blocked the blow with his blade. He responded to the attack by turning in the opposite direction from where he had defended himself, intending to hit him sideways, making him step back. The two blades clashed fiercely, one blow being parried after another. Nico dodged another attack, hitting Jason's blade with the flat part of his own, forcing it down. It all seemed too simple; it would take just one elbow strike to put Jason on the ground. Jason, who had understood Nico's plan, slid his sword to the side, making him step back. "Nice move, Grace" he complimented his friend, who had caught him off guard with that move so fast that he hadn't even realized it. "You haven't seen anything yet" Nico replied, going towards him and forcing him to defend himself. He parried every blow he received, but had to step back with each attack. Nico tried to think of multiple solutions simultaneously, knowing that he couldn't sidestep because Jason would have anticipated him, and he couldn't keep retreating either. He clenched his jaw, finding no other alternative than to reciprocate with a new attack. He struck a low blow, which Jason quickly parried, exposing himself. Nico took advantage of this to hit him on the side, at arm height. Jason parried, stepping back in turn. Nico had him in his grasp by now. The boy approached, and Jason could only defend himself. Nico attacked a few more times before using the last of his strength to strike from the opposite side, making the sword fly out of Jason's hands. "I think I won" said Nico, pointing the tip of his sword at Jason's throat. "I declare myself defeated" he said with a smile, raising his hands in surrender.
Nico sheathed his sword and wiped the sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand. "Nice duel" Jason said, picking up the sword and transforming it into a coin. "But you were slow to intercept that strike. If it were a real fight, you would have had a serious hemorrhage" he commented, twirling the coin between his fingers. "I know, I thought you were going to aim for my hand with the sword" Nico explained, grabbing a water bottle. "That's what I wanted you to think" Jason explained, catching the bottle Nico had thrown at him. "But you were outstanding. I didn't even see the sword when you made that fake move!" he exclaimed sincerely surprised. Nico smiled, that move had saved him more than once when he wasn't safe in the field. They continued to talk for a long time about combat techniques, and between breaths, they also learned new moves to use in the next fight. Jason showed him a typical Roman move in slow motion, which he was really proud of. Nico copied the movements, finding it too graceful to be Roman. Then they took turns practicing on a dummy, with Jason and then Nico shouting out what they had to do, to see if they remembered the moves they had just learned. Then the two said goodbye, agreeing to meet at the cafeteria as usual. Both headed to their cabins. Nico took his third shower, changing his clothes once again. Now in the cabin, there were only dirty clothes and only a couple of clean shirts, one of which was from the camp. He put on the other shirt, tidied up the cabin, and piled the dirty laundry in a corner so the harpies could take care of it in the afternoon while he was with Will. From afar, he heard the conch shell sound. Nico was finishing folding the last shirt and putting it in the closet when it sounded. He left the cabin, not realizing how hungry he was until the call sounded. All the demigods headed towards the cafeteria, taking the seats they wanted. To Nico's surprise, Percy was also at his table, and it seemed like he was telling something funny to Jason.
Nico sighed as he walked towards his table. It had been a while since he had seen the darling of the gods, always too busy spending time with the freshmen, telling stories of their exploits, he thought. "Hey! Is the water hot?" the boy asked as soon as he saw him. He always seemed so cheerful, even though he had literally suffered the pains of hell like few others. Nico ran a hand through his hair, the story of the lake was becoming ridiculous. "Boiling" he replied flatly, wanting to end the conversation there. It wasn't the first time someone had flipped over, and it wouldn't be the last. Percy, however, continued to laugh to himself, dragging Jason into the laughter. "Gods! How did it happen?" he asked, genuinely interested in knowing the facts. "Simple, I lost my balance" he replied, fork in hand. The two nodded, understanding the mistake.
"Textbook error" Jason said. "Yeah, you should have kept leveraging with your legs" Percy said, taking a sip of that blue drink. "That's what I did until I stopped feeling them" Nico explained, unable to suppress the smile. "It happens" Percy replied, knowing that Nico had never set foot in the lake before, except when he first arrived at camp; even in that case, he ended up completely inside with a school bus. "Why rowing?" Percy asked after a while. Nico remained silent for a moment, he didn't really know why. "They asked me, I accepted, end of the story" he simply replied, hiding his face behind the goblet. "Will proposed it" Jason intervened, indicating —with a imperceptible nod of his head— the Apollo table. Percy stretched his neck a bit to see the boy. He didn't know him very well, he knew he had become the head of the seventh house after the war against the Titans, a title that had been offered to him by seniority. That sudden memory saddened him a bit, it seemed like yesterday when he had read the prophecy in the attic, going down to the field against the enemies. They had lost so many friends that day, some of whom were not even found. "He's a nice guy" Percy remarked, in short, the classic son of Apollo with tanned skin, blond hair, and blue eyes. Nico, however, didn't understand where he was going with this. "Yes, I guess" he replied, not really sure what kind of turn the conversation was taking. "But we're just friends" he rushed to say, not understanding why people had suddenly gotten strange ideas in their heads. Jason nodded, as if to say—yeah right, as if we believe you "It's true!" Nico exclaimed, hitting him on the arm. "You hurt me!" the boy complained, rubbing the spot where he had been hit. "But stop it" muttered Nico. "I don't know what you've got in your head, since when a boy can't go out with another boy?" that strange and ambiguous situation was bothering him. "You're always together" Jason ventured. "You seem really happy when he's close to you" he said, unable to avoid bending his lips into a smile. Nico simply shrugged, it wasn't false what he was saying, he really liked Will's company, maybe he even liked something else besides the same company. "Yes, so what? It's not the first time I've smiled, it seems like a rare event from the way you talk about it" Nico commented, finding that speech ridiculous. After Nico's sentence, none of the three spoke anymore. Nico was grateful for that silence at his table, yet he felt bitter. He couldn't even explain to himself what absurd emotions he felt for Will, let alone explain them to someone else, but one thing was certain: he felt happy again next to Will.

[CHAPTER 14]
THE CAMP JUPITER WAS JUST AS HE HAD LEFT IT, with the only difference being the new temples being erected, following the architectural patterns indicated by Annabeth. The Roman camp couldn't look better. It still bustled with nature spirits, lares, and fauns trotting through the camp's streets, occasionally hindering a hero in training. Some demigods strolled through the paths, discussing the upcoming war games. Others stopped and pointed at Nico, wondering why he had returned. With all eyes on him, he headed towards where Reyna was waiting.
The hall was bright, the tiles reflecting the sunlight, and the marble columns giving the building a regal appearance. Sitting there, waiting for his arrival, was Bellona's daughter, his adventure companion and trusted friend. She stood up, walking towards him and placing a hand on his shoulder. "Welcome back to camp, Nico" Reyna greeted, leading him outside. "I found a decent place in the city, and you can come to camp whenever you want" she said, heading towards the Roman city that mimicked the style of the Italian Rome, with its warm and round colors, making it almost feel like being on the same European peninsula.
Bellona's daughter told him - during the journey - that things at the camp had improved since the new agreement with the Greeks. She had received messages from Camp Half-Blood that summer, announcing that in the fall they would receive visits, so combat techniques could merge along with culture and lifestyles. "It wasn't easy" the girl explained. "Many are tied to the Mos Maiorum, the senate itself started by saying it was sheer madness" she sighed. "But even they cannot go against the will of our gods" Nico nodded, understanding the difficulty of accepting something different. He had been through it himself, and only the gods knew how long it would take for others to accept him as a camp member.
"But enough about the camp" Reyna said, noticing a certain silence from her friend. "It's been a while since we talked, besides that conversation the other day"
"I've been busy" he briefly recounted the past few weeks at Camp Half-Blood, mentioning something about Apollo's son, avoiding telling her about the Capture the Flag game and especially the kiss on the hill. The girl didn't make a sound, just let him tell, noting a slight and thinly veiled smile every time he mentioned Apollo's son. "He's a good friend" he concluded, letting out an imperceptible sigh.
"Just a good friend?" she dared to ask, as she had seen well beyond the tough exterior that protected him.
The boy took some time before responding. "Well, yes" he confirmed, though not entirely convinced. Reyna simply pursed her lips, not asking him more about that boy. If he wanted to tell her, he would, she thought. "Okay" she said, stopping in front of a building. "First floor. Your school is just a block away, you can't miss it. I've also taken the liberty of getting your books"
Nico was truly speechless; he hadn't imagined she had done him such a big favor. "Thank you, Reyna" he looked at her with deep gratitude.
"Don't mention it! For anything, you know where to find me" she handed him the keys, giving him a final pat before returning to the Roman camp.
Nico twirled the keys between his fingers, anxious and terrified to go in. He opened the door, dragging his suitcases behind him, climbing up to the first floor. There, he entered the comfortable apartment Reyna had found for him. It was a bright and warm room, the walls painted in a matte yellow and divided in half by charming Roman motifs. It seemed completely the opposite of his gloomy cabin.
Having found the bedroom, he unpacked his belongings there, hiding the box he had taken from camp in a drawer. He put away all his clothes, the few that he had, in the wardrobe, and having emptied the suitcase, he flopped onto the bed with a sigh. He didn't stay there for long because as soon as he touched the mattress, someone rang the doorbell, forcing him to go and answer. It was a real joy when he realized it was his sister, who had just knew about his arrival at camp. The two greeted each other warmly; Hazel had been missed more than anyone. Along with her was her boyfriend, the son of Mars, who seemed to have grown a couple of inches during those weeks.
Frank gave him a pat on the shoulder, quite happy to see him again. They had never really talked, but he was still part of Hazel's family, and that was enough for Frank to like him.
The son of Hades invited them both into the still-empty apartment, making them comfortable in the living room. He had a lot to tell his sister about those weeks at Camp Half-Blood, avoiding dwelling too much on Will and what had happened before arriving in New Rome. He also told her about Jason, who seemed to have completely rebuilt his life. "I'm really happy about that" exclaimed Hazel.
"Piper is such a good girl, those two make a beautiful couple" she told him, with Frank nodding in agreement.
"How's Percy?" asked Frank. The son of Hades just shrugged.
"Well, at least he hasn't gotten into any new trouble" he then told them about the absurd climbing wall challenge, of Jason being determined to win and not faint every two seconds.
The three spent the afternoon together, inviting Nico to join them for a bite to eat. The son of Hades agreed willingly, following them outside the building.
There were still many things Nico wanted to tell his sister, all carrying the same name. However, it was difficult to talk about them with Frank around.
They mostly talked about the Roman camp and how it had evolved in such a short time, telling him the same things Reyna had hinted at earlier: some problems that had arisen at the beginning, the decision to build more temples dedicated to minor and almost forgotten deities. "You should have attended the council" sighed Hazel, squeezing Frank's hand. "The Senate didn't want to hear any reason. According to them, we had to continue with our traditions" she briefly recounted what had happened after their return to camp.
"Some demigods thought the same, obviously" explained Frank. "Centuries of tradition thrown out the window" he grimaced.
"But even they had to bow to the will of the gods" Nico guessed. The son of Mars nodded.
"Thanks to the gods, they opened their eyes, our societies cannot survive if we don't collaborate. This was evident even this summer" added the boy, getting a nod of approval from Nico.
Frank began to speak freely, monopolizing the conversation a bit. He cared deeply about New Rome now that he had become praetor, telling them about the boring Roman bureaucracy that Jason had mentioned that morning, the holes to fill, the people to meet, all the supervision needed during the construction of the temples. "We could rely on Annabeth, she's a real architect!" exclaimed the boy.
The conversation gradually dwindled with the setting sun, coloring the green hills and the tips of the tallest buildings. Under that light, the city of New Rome seemed like a replica of the authentic Rome. "See you around" said Frank, bidding farewell with a nod.
"Of course" replied Nico, finally managing to spend five minutes alone with his sister, who had not missed the agitation and urgency to talk only with her. She was really good at reading body language. "Let's talk about what you forgot to tell me tomorrow, okay?" the girl smiled kindly, speaking near Nico's ear, who simply nodded and thanked her.
She walked away, the smile on her face leaving him in the driveway, which was slowly darkening.
The son of Hades returned to his apartment, finally lying down on the bed he had longed for all day. His mind was strangely empty, yet so full of thoughts that he didn't exactly know which ones to grasp.
He ran a hand over his face, forcing himself to get up, put on pajamas, and set the alarm for the next day. It was while turning the red hand that the air seemed to fold on itself, gathering the light like many small tiles, then opening into a window of light. On the other side, there was a brightly lit bedroom, although it was clearly night outside. The walls were covered with band posters, along with some photos and concert tickets now weathered with time. At the center of that window made of light was the boy who had been at the center of his thoughts all day.
"Hey!" Will was radiant as usual, but his smile faded when he noticed that Nico might be getting ready for bed. "Did I disturb you?" he hurried to say, regretful for not being able to call him earlier. Nico shook his head, placing the alarm clock on the nightstand.
"No, it's fine" he replied, unable to hide a certain embarrassment.
"Okay—" he tried to smile, but it was clear that something was wrong. All day, Will had berated himself for giving him that cheek kiss; he shouldn't have done it. Who knows what Nico thought now. "So, school starts tomorrow, huh?" he said the first thing that came to mind, even if it was rather mundane and predictable. Nico sighed, still not believing that he would really be picking up paper and pen again. "Yeah" he replied. "I'm kind of nervous" he hinted at a smile, sitting on the bed.
"It's normal" Will tried to cheer him up. "At least you won't have the fear of being expelled eight times" he joked, tilting his lips sideways. Nico stared at him, realizing that for the entire time, that was the first time he had looked him in the eyes.
"Then I guess they'll be more prepared for hyperactivity and dyslexia issues there" the boy continued. Nico struggled to imagine Will with such problems—at camp, he seemed like such a normal guy that Nico often forgot that, like most demigods, he suffered from hyperactivity and dyslexia. Life in mortal schools was often challenging.
"Do you start tomorrow too?" Nico asked then, breaking his silence.
"Yeah" Will sighed. "If it weren't for my friends, it would be a torture" It wasn't the first time he had said that, even during the days spent together at camp, Will always talked about his school and how heavy the schedules were, thankfully lightened by his two friends he had made during the past year. "Did you already get the list of extracurricular activities?" he asked, just to liven up the conversation. "It arrived yesterday, mom already signed me up for that music course. May she be blessed, I wouldn't know what to do without her" he said, unable to hold back a clear laugh. Nico thought about how it must be to have a mother; the only memory he had of his was of a faded smile, and maybe it wasn't even real. At that thought, he became saddened.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Will asked, concerned to see that dark expression.
Nico simply shook his head, coming out of his thoughts. "Nothing" he lied, trying to look at something other than Will's blue eyes. "Just tired, I guess" he said, trying to convince him with that excuse. Apollo's son tried to believe it, without delving too much into the details. "When does the course start?" he asked the next moment.
"Next week, while auditions for the choir are this Friday" he replied, and at that thought, he immediately became enthusiastic.
"A smile will be enough to get you in" Nico weakly smiled, imagining him auditioning for the school choir.
"Do you think so?" Will laughed.
"I think so" Nico answered so seriously that Will didn't know if he was really joking or being serious. He decided to take it as a joke.
The two continued to talk for a while, avoiding touching on the "hill kiss" topic. It seemed that both were fine with it, yet they couldn't deny to themselves that after that morning, a kind of strange tension had arisen. Will would have liked to explain, give him a reason for what he had done, yet something prevented him, perhaps the current situation. He thought that maybe it would be more appropriate to talk to him about it in person. Yes, he would do that when he returned to camp. However, he had not taken one thing into consideration:—"Remember during the game in the woods?" Nico suddenly reminded him, wanting to get that thought out of his mind that had been buzzing around all day. Will swallowed, hoping he hadn't heard it. "Yes" he replied, torturing his lips.
"You were about to tell me something" Nico continued, hoping he could talk to him about it now. Apollo's son nodded; he didn't want to tell him like this, via a message, but actually, at that moment, there was no one who could interrupt them. Will parted his lips, ready to tell him the truth. "Well, the thing is that..." he stammered, trying to find the right words, and as he struggled, the message was slowly dissolving.
"You'll tell me tomorrow" Nico hurried to say.
"Goodnight, Nico," he said just as quickly, before the window of light disappeared, leaving the son of darkness in the shadows.
"Goodnight, Will"

[CHAPTER 11]
THE TWO DEMIGODS SPENT ANOTHER AFTERNOON TOGETHER, exchanging words from time to time. Nico was happy to let the son of Apollo talk, occasionally chiming in when the conversation became interesting. Will mentioned more about his life outside of camp, the extracurricular courses he wanted to take that year. Nico raised an eyebrow, quite intrigued. "What kind of courses?" Will shrugged, replying, "I don't know yet, I have to see" He really had no idea what courses the school would offer that year. "What would you like to do?" Nico asked him again. The boy remained silent for a moment, reflecting on the question. "Music" he replied, unable to suppress a laugh. "Really?" Nico asked, finding it hard to believe what he had just heard. "Yes" Will replied, embarrassed. "I know I'm good at it, but I'd still like to do it" Nico nodded, as it wasn't a bizarre idea at all, considering he was the son of the god of the arts.
By now, the two had finished their work and were just chatting about what awaited them outside of camp. Nico had no idea what awaited him if he actually went to study in New Rome; he only thought he would have to study hard to catch up with everyone else. "I'll ask Jason or Hazel to help me with Latin," Nico said, even though a small part of him hoped there was no Latin or that they would turn a blind eye to him and teach him Ancient Greek. "Then you'll have to tell me" Will smiled. "I'll send you an Iris message every evening" Nico replied, fully intending to do so. He rang the conch shell again, drawing the attention of the demigods. Once again, they arrived at the dining hall together, greeted each other, and made plans to meet at the bonfire later. The son of Hades went to his usual table, surprised not to see anyone waiting for him, or so it seemed. For a moment, Nico had to admit to himself that he had felt lonely, now accustomed to the suffocating but pleasant presence of his friends.
"So?" Jason asked, taking a seat and placing his tray on the table. "So what?" Nico replied. "Did you ask him?" Piper specified. Nico looked at each one of them, almost sorry to have to give them bad news. "No" he replied, as if it didn't matter to him. "You should" Annabeth intervened, not at all satisfied with the answer. Nico just shrugged. "When I feel the need, I will" he replied, finally dropping the "Will topic". The demigods then started talking about something else, preferring not to interfere too much in the private life of the son of Hades. They also talked about the life that awaited them outside of camp; both Percy and Annabeth announced their decision to attend university in New Rome. Ever since Percy had told Annabeth about it, that place had become her new obsession. However, Nico couldn't deny feeling a pang in his heart at those words; he would see Percy Jackson even at the Roman camp. "Nico was also thinking of going to study there" Jason recounted. "Jason!" Nico hissed, not expecting his friend to reveal it. "You too?" Annabeth's eyes lit up, amazed by the news. Nico could only sigh. "Yes" he replied, running a hand through his hair. "But it's just an idea" he added, still not entirely sure of his choice, especially now that he knew that they would both be there. "You should go" Annabeth encouraged him, getting everyone's approval. "Yeah, maybe" Nico mumbled, repeatedly touching his skull ring. "You'll enjoy going back to studying!" Annabeth exclaimed, making it sound simple. "I hope so" the son of Hades said, his only memories of school being from the academy, and even then, they weren't any better than many other memories.
Later, the demigods got up and headed towards the bonfire, with Nico following them at a distance, sitting in the usual spot next to the same person. "Hey!" Will greeted him, offering him marshmallows to roast. "Hey" Nico replied to the greeting, accepting the candies. "Your friends are staring at us" he whispered. The son of Hades nodded, having already noticed that those four had been staring at them for evenings now. "I know" he replied. "Let them be" he advised, knowing they wouldn't see anything else but two boys talking between one song and another.
After the usual campfire songs, the boys were sent back to their respective cabins. The two demigods bid each other goodbye, remembering their appointment for the next day. Then each went in opposite directions, straight to their own cabins. As soon as he was inside his cabin, Nico threw himself on the bed, not bothering to take off his clothes. He sighed and turned over, staring at the ceiling, letting thoughts invade his mind, realizing how clear nighttime thoughts could be. He paused to think again about the morning, about when their two blades crossed paths, and he was just inches from Will's face. He closed his eyes, letting that thought out, not wanting to be influenced by his friends' ridiculous ideas. Although, in fact, those thoughts had been in his mind long before. The boy ran a hand over his face, wanting to fall asleep like all the other campers, exhausted after an intense day of training, instead of feeling his strength awaken only at night. He rolled over with a sigh, looking towards the window he always kept open, facing a slice of star-studded sky, and slowly, as he counted them, he managed to fall asleep. Even in his cabin, Will, like the night before, struggled to fall asleep. He, too, thought back to the morning when he was so close to Nico that he could hear his heartbeat. That morning had taken an enormous effort not to lower his weapon and get even closer to his face. He sighed, turning to his side, banishing that thought from his mind.
It was another night without dreams, which began to worry some of the demigods who constantly dreamed of monsters. Slowly, the sun rose, kissing the camp and forcing the demigods to get up and start a new day. Like every morning, Will followed his routine, assigning tasks to each member before leaving. Then they all headed towards the dining pavilion, taking their seats at their table or visiting friends. Will noticed that Nico's table was empty that morning, probably the demigod had decided to take it easy and give himself a few extra minutes of sleep. Later, other demigods arrived, taking the remaining seats, and as they began to arrive in greater numbers, Will got up and headed towards the arena.
When he arrived, he didn't expect to find Nico facing off against a skeleton he had summoned; it was certainly better exercise than fighting against an immobile dummy. "Good morning" Will mumbled, keeping a safe distance. Nico struck the skeleton one last time before stopping and making his opponent disappear with a wave of his hand, just as it was about to land its final blow.
"Good morning" he replied, turning towards the boy who couldn't help but notice the dark circles under his eyes. "Wow" Will whispered. "Did you even sleep?" he asked, getting only a tiny laugh in response. "No. Not really" Nico replied, running a hand over his forehead to wipe away some sweat. Will cautiously approached, looking around, hoping there weren't any crazy skeletons. "Did you send it away?" he asked, positioning himself exactly where the skeleton had been sucked in. "What's wrong?" Nico smiled sinisterly. "You're not afraid of a few bones, are you?" he teased, resting the sword on his shoulder as if it were a baseball bat. "No, of course not!" Will lied. "I just wouldn't want it to have gone to call others to invade the camp" he said, realizing only afterward that there was no logic in what he had said. Nico looked at him, unable to avoid raising an eyebrow "Solace, it doesn't work like that" he told him, holding back from laughing in his face. Then there was a veil of silence between the two, broken only by a sigh from Nico. "Come on" the boy hinted with a laugh. "We'd better start before the zombies arrive" he teased, getting a tongue sticking out in return. The two demigods got into position, repeating the moves from the previous day to see if the son of Apollo remembered them.
There were moments when Nico had to explain how to better grip the weapon, and others to adjust his posture, but for the most part, the boy was doing fine. He had quick reflexes, like all the other demigods; hyperactivity kept him always on the alert. "Let's get serious!" Nico challenged him, wanting to make the training more dynamic. Will didn't expect such an attack, tried to parry it, and then dodged the second by moving to the side. He quickly thought, responding to the attack. The two blades clashed and vibrated, metallic noises echoed throughout the arena along with grunts caused by the excessive force they were using. The son of Hades quickly cornered him and with a hilt strike, made him drop his sword. "You responded well" he complimented him. "Yes, but I lost" Will replied, massaging his struck hand. Nico shrugged, retrieving his friend's weapon and handing it back to him. "Thanks" Will said, taking the sword back. "You lost because you didn't expect it" he explained. "You lowered your guard when I hit you with that feint" he showed him the move again. Will mentally took note, suggesting they try it again. They practiced for almost the entire morning, with other camp members beginning to populate the arena. Their foreheads were now beaded with sweat, and their hair stuck to them. Will was exhausted, and what he didn't understand was how Nico could still be standing even though he hadn't been able to close an eye all night. The son of Apollo lost again, but he could at least say that he lasted longer than the previous times. "You're getting there" Nico encouraged him, quite satisfied with his progress. "I'd like to see you in a real fight" Will took a deep breath, catching his breath. "Yeah, me too" he said, aware that Nico had been taking it easy on him. Both sheathed their swords, wiping their foreheads with the backs of their hands "We'll try again tomorrow" "Okay" At the end of the training, they headed to their respective cabins, one to freshen up while the other rested a bit as soon as he got inside his house.
In Cabin 7, after Will finished washing up, he was approached by his sister Kayla, who had come in to retrieve her bow. "Already done?" Will simply nodded. "Are you going to meet him again this afternoon?" she asked suggestively, gathering her hair with green tips into a ponytail. Her brother was momentarily taken aback, then he shook his head in the negative. Kayla looked a bit disappointed. "We'll catch up later" Will said quickly, heading toward the door. "Will" she called after him. "You have to tell him" she looked at him seriously, getting only a nod in response.
Nico woke up, summoned by the conch shell. He didn't feel like he had slept for very long, yet it was already lunchtime. He stretched a couple of times before getting up and leaving his cabin, heading towards the dining pavilion. Jason was already waiting for him, and as soon as he saw him, he greeted him energetically. "Where were you? We looked for you everywhere." "I was sleeping" Nico replied, sitting down and finally eating something. "Rough night?" Jason asked, aware of his sleepless nights. The son of Hades just nodded, taking a bite of something from his tray. "Did you see...?" Jason gestured towards table 7. Nico raised his gaze, focusing on where Jason was pointing. "Yes" he replied. "He's not bad with a sword, but I doubt he'll be of any help if we get caught tomorrow" he confessed. "You can always use the skeletons" Jason suggested. Nico sighed. "It's not that simple" he explained. "If you tell them to attack they really attack. They don't have a conscience" he tried to make it as simple as possible. Jason parted his lips, thinking that Nico had full control over those things. "Well, the others don't know that" Jason replied. "We can leverage that"
"Sure" Nico answered absentmindedly, his thoughts completely elsewhere at the moment
The two quickly finished their meal and were joined by the son of Poseidon, who was eager to have both of them at the climbing wall. Nico rolled his eyes, forgetting about the absurd promise he had made. "Come on, Nico!" Percy urged. "Let's show Mr. Lightning and Thunder how to climb" he laughed, giving him a playful shove. Nico scoffed, pushing his hands away. He would have preferred to spend a quiet afternoon on the edge of the forest, maybe finding some monsters to have some fun with, but the son of the sea god was insistent. In the end, Nico agreed, following the two boys to the wall that now seemed to bear their name. Percy and Jason were the first to climb it, with the latter convinced that he would finally beat Percy. They started the climb, and Jason started well, ahead of Percy. However, what he hadn't anticipated was the hot steam blown onto his arms. He lost his grip a couple of times, allowing Percy to overtake him again. But the son of Jupiter didn't want to give up; he resumed his climb, at least wanting to reach the top. "Come on, Grace!" Percy exclaimed, now near the top. "Wasn't today the day you were going to let me win?" he asked, stifling a laugh. Jason grumbled in Latin, trying to climb a bit higher, but it was useless to say that he ended up getting stuck; a rung had literally disappeared, leaving him struggling to find a handhold. He sighed, giving up and dropping to the ground. "You made it half a meter higher" Nico tried to comfort him. Jason forced a smile, not at all satisfied with his performance. Not much later, Percy was back on the ground, celebrating another overwhelming victory over Jason. Nico, on the other hand, wanted to finish that ridiculous challenge as quickly as possible, hoping to silence Percy. "Let's get going" he muttered, approaching the wall with slow steps, casting a calculating look at it, trying to figure out how it worked and what pace it had. It wasn't easy, but in the end, he decided to leave it to Fate.
The two demigods started together, first placing one foot and then one hand, leveraging with the muscles of all four limbs. Percy was fast, having done it many times before, but Nico was still agile. More than once, he managed not to have his shirt incinerated, and he also dodged some arrows. He fell behind, but at least he didn't give up the challenge. He managed to reach the top, but Percy won anyway, as he was already descending. Later, they were back on the ground, their clothes scorched and punctured by flames. Their breath was returning. "See, Grace" Percy said. "That's how you conquer the wall!" he exclaimed, putting his hand on Nico's shoulder, who was too focused on looking toward the archery range to notice Percy leaning on him. "Nico" Jason called, noticing that he had missed the conversation. "What?" he asked, realizing only at that moment that Percy had been leaning on him. "I said, do you want to go throw javelins?" Jason repeated. Nico gave him an absent look, alternating between Jason and the arrows being shot. It felt strange not to spend the afternoon with Will. He shrugged Percy off, who had rested enough for his taste. "Yes, sure" he replied to Jason, walking with him toward the arena.

[CHAPTER 17]
AFTER THAT NIGHT, SEVERAL MONTHS HAD ALREADY PASSED, and the first trimester was now coming to end. Nico spoke with Will again, and there were no shortage of awkward silences and fleeting glances. The son of Apollo had not yet told him anything about his upcoming arrival at camp, he thought it would be a nice surprise if he told him two days before departure.
Hazel would occasionally visit him, correcting his lengthy Latin versions. In a short amount of time, he had also managed to learn that language, although he still couldn't pronounce it as well as his classmates.
He hadn't made friends with anyone in particular yet, but at least his classmates had stopped pointing him out. Nico thought they had given up and would therefore tolerate him for the rest of the year.
The assignments went fairly well—he was quite satisfied with his performance, although the first month had been really difficult and the second practically impossible. Soon, all the subjects began to overlap, causing only great confusion in the demigod's head.
November seemed to suddenly accelerate with all those assignments and tests. Fortunately, to sweeten the deal, there were those brief and intense late-night chats with Will, who told him about his life in Texas, his singing course which was going very well, and how the professor was very pleased. He told him that before the winter holidays, they would hold a sort of concert in the school auditorium, Nico would have liked to see him. "Speaking of this winter" Will interrupted, drawing Nico's attention to himself. "I was thinking of spending the holidays at camp" he said, hinting at a smile, hoping for a positive reaction from Nico.
Nico stared at him, slightly parting his lips. "Oh" his eyes sparkled. "I have to take care of my cabin, I mean, I'm still the head counselor" he quickly added, as if that were the real reason. The boy on the other side of the steamy, lit window nodded. "So, I'll have you on my hands even in the winter. How lovely" Nico commented ironically, theatrically raising his eyes to the sky. "Hey! You should be happy!" Will played along. "After all, I bring you the Sun, I bring myself, on the darkest and coldest days of the year" he said, unable to contain his laughter.
"As if" Nico muttered.
"Okay! I'm offended now" he exclaimed, crossing his arms over his chest and putting on an adorable and comical pout.
"Oh come on! I was just kidding" Nico apologized.
"So was I" Will replied, abandoning the pout for a smile.
"What? But I was almost feeling guilty!"
"Just almost?" he asked, barely holding back a laugh.
"Let's say a little" Nico sighed, shrugging. "I'm glad you're coming, really" he added after, not letting go of his blue eyes.
"Me too" Will whispered, lowering his gaze slightly.
They continued their conversation for a while longer before someone knocked on Will's door, reminding him to go to sleep. Both of their cheeks turned crimson. Nico had never met or seen a photo of Will's mother. She was a beautiful woman, possessing the same sunny and contagious smile as her son, and Nico was almost certain that the Sun God had fallen in love primarily for that, rather than her music.
"Yes, I'll go now" Will replied embarrassedly.
"Hello, Mrs. Solace" Nico greeted, just to make Will blush even more.
"Yes—" the boy muttered. "Mom, this is Nico, and Nico, this is my mom" he quickly mumbled, wanting to get out of that situation. Parents were just naturally embarrassing. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you" the woman exclaimed. "Will can't stop talking about you" she said, making Will only more nervous. "Really?" Nico replied smoothly, unable to help but shoot a playful glance at Will. "Okay, well" Will interrupted before his mother said anything more. "How about you go now, mom?" he suggested.
"Don't stay up too late" Naomi laughed, saying goodbye to Nico and giving her son a caress, making him even more uncomfortable.
"And so—" Nico began after the door to the room was closed. "You talk about me to your mother"
Will sighed, hoping the blush had gone away. "I mentioned you only once" he muttered, trying not to make a big deal out of it. "She's the one who always overreacts" he huffed.
"She's cool" Nico attempted to smile, reflexively lowering his gaze to his fingers, which habitually played with that skull-shaped ring.
Will remained silent for a while, nodding in agreement with the boy's words. "Yeah, she is" he agreed, smiling back, letting a veil of silence fall between them.
"Well" Nico cleared his throat. "I think maybe we should listen to your mom and go to sleep" he said, getting a nod of agreement from Will.
"Yeah, I think it's time" he agreed.
"Goodnight" the son of Hades bid.
"Goodnight!" he replied, locking eyes one last time before they each passed their hands over the steamy window, which if it weren't made of steam, they would have touched.
Nico let himself fall onto the mattress, silently staring—his mind emptied of every thought—at the ceiling illuminated by the lights of the Roman city. There was an unreal silence enveloping the night. Slowly, thoughts began to take shape in his head. He should have been ecstatic because Will would be arriving at Camp Half-Blood in two days, yet doubts and insecurities prevailed.
Nico no longer thought about that conversation with Jason or Hazel; he had always put off that famous talk in front of the mirror where he would prepare a nice monologue explaining to Will that he liked him. He kept saying he would think about it later, and now the deadline had arrived. The more he thought about it, the more his stomach churned.
The next morning, he woke up relatively late; the boy had spent half the night trying out a speech, which turned out to be too long and verbose. He decided he would improvise on the spot.
He quickly got ready, rushing out of the apartment to head to school. When he arrived, he was practically out of breath. His class—usually empty before his arrival—was already full of students waiting for the bell. As soon as he opened the door to enter and make his way to his desk, he couldn't help but notice the glances from his classmates who had hoped for his first absence. Nico could only smile, satisfied with disappointing their expectations again.
The morning at school passed very quickly; the teachers slowed down their explanations in anticipation of the winter holidays, assigning some tasks to be done during those weeks of break.
The afternoon also passed by quickly. As soon as he returned to the apartment, he started packing, so that everything would be ready for the next day. He also did a couple of assignments; he didn't want to bring the books to Camp Half-Blood.
At the end, he sighed, closing the book and leaving it on the desk to gather dust until his next return, throwing himself on the bed, longing only to sleep, and indeed, as soon as he closed his eyes, he sank into a deep slumber.
He slept for a long time, as he only did when he made too many trips in the shadows, waking up with the first cold lights of dawn, which slowly pinched the icy ground of New Rome. He had all the time he wanted that morning; he could have a decent breakfast without the rush or anxiety of being at school on time. He went to the kitchen still in his pajamas, hair sticking up straight. He prepared something quick and warm. Since he had been living there, he had learned to cook something other than eggs.
After a long time, he ate at the table, relaxing and taking all the time to wake up and finally enjoy a morning where the routine didn't rule. He went around eight to prepare and check, before leaving, if he had put everything inside; he only noticed then that he had left the box in the drawer.
He pursed his lips at the sight of it, then picked it up and went to open it on the bed. He couldn't stand December.
He picked up the lead figurine, which his sister had found years ago in that landfill. Everyone knew how Nico's sister had died, but only two knew why, and it was that figurine that was responsible for everything. Yet, even though he couldn't stand the sight of it, he couldn't get rid of it. He stayed there for a while, staring at it, glancing at the rest of the contents. He hadn't had the strength or courage to burn all his figurines, especially the special and rare ones. It had been a while since he played with them; who knows if he was still capable.
He sighed, quickly wiping a cheek, putting the figurine back in the box and putting it in the suitcase with everything else. December always brought back the same memories.
He left the apartment, turning the key for the last time before going to camp and saying goodbye to his friends and sister.
Both the streets of New Rome and the training camp were decorated to celebrate the Saturnalia event. They had already begun a few days ago, and people were visiting friends to exchange gifts as tradition dictated. Even the Temple of Pluto was adorned with gifts and decorations, complete with baskets full of offerings.
At the Roman camp, the demigods had stopped training to celebrate the festival; they had also become kinder to the fauns who were begging around.
As he entered the camp, the son of Hades was warmly welcomed by his sister, who had been waiting for him since that morning, along with Frank and Reyna - who had joined them later. "It's a shame you have to leave so soon" she said, saddened by his departure.
"Indeed" replied Nico, who would have liked to celebrate the Saturnalia with them.
"You'll miss a great convivium publicum" Frank told him. "This year, we intend to go all out" he smiled, excited like everyone else for the festival.
"Maybe next year" Nico said simply, shrugging.
"Next year, we'll make sure you stay" exclaimed Reyna, locking eyes with her friend.
"Absolutely" he promised.
He was then escorted outside the camp, where he received more hugs and pats on the back. "Have a good holiday" Hazel whispered in his ear, releasing the embrace.
"Same to you" he replied. "Io, Saturnalia!" he exclaimed, the typical greeting for that festival, which was reciprocated by the others.
He waved to them one last time before being enveloped by darkness and transported to Camp Half-Blood.

[CHAPTERS 16]
WITH THE PALM OF HIS HAND, HE WIPED A CHEEK, something inside him had suddenly broken. It had been since his sister's passing that he had been repressing his emotions. He tried at least to suppress them, but they always remained with him, and that very evening they decided to manifest themselves.
He wiped the other cheek as well, telling himself to stop because he was only making a fool of himself, but the trouble was he couldn't. He felt like a hypocrite, always repeating that he was fine with just being friends, that he would have preferred it rather than losing him over some words too many; yet he so much wanted to hear those words.
He wiped his cheek one last time, lying down on the bed, getting angry with himself for feeling this way.
He managed to fall asleep early, that crying had drained all his energy: for that night, he would sleep soundly.
On the other side of the state, in Austin, Texas, someone else couldn't consider themselves so lucky. Will couldn't close his eyes after that conversation. He could read in his eyes that Nico had been hurt by something he had said.
He hugged the pillow to his chest, letting out yet another sigh, calling himself stupid and cowardly for not being able to do such a simple thing, well maybe not so simple. As he was lost in his thoughts—which pulled him from one side of his mind to the other—the door of his room opened, letting in a woman in a bathrobe. "Will, darling, it's late, go to sleep"
"In a moment, mom" he replied, with a dull tone of voice and absent gaze. Naomi sat down on the bed, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Is something wrong?" she asked, waiting for him to respond. Will just sighed, pulling his knees up. "I don't know" he replied. "It's just that he seemed angry—no, disappointed" he told their brief conversation. "I've never seen him like this before"
"Perhaps he expected to hear something else" Naomi suggested.
Will huffed, rolling his eyes. "Mom, I tried, but I can't tell him that I like him"
"Why not?"
"Because if he doesn't feel the same way, then it would be awkward between us" he sighed again, resting his forehead on his knees. His mother looked at him tenderly, knowing all too well how big teenagers' problems seemed and that for anything there seemed to be no solution.
She then lifted his face, stroking a damp cheek. "Why shouldn't he feel the same way?" she asked, curling her lips into a gentle smile. Will kept his gaze low, not having a real answer to give her, he simply believed that if he told him, he would mess things up. The woman got up, pressing her lips to her son's forehead. "Think about it" she said before leaving the room and leaving him alone with his thoughts.
Will retrieved the pillow he was clutching, hugging it again, letting the thoughts return to dominate his mind until they completely overwhelmed him.
The following morning, Will struggled to wake up, although he was accustomed to the camp routine.
In the kitchen, his mother was already there, in her bathrobe, preparing breakfast for him. Lucky her for having managed to sleep. "Good morning my dear" greeted the woman, serving him breakfast. "Good morning" he replied, yawing.
"Slept well?" Naomi asked, already lively in the early morning.
"No—" he answered, slicing into a still warm pancake. "I spent the night thinking"
"Oh" she replied. "And what have you concluded?" she asked, sitting down at the table. Will remained silent for a few moments, staring at the vase of flowers in front of him. "That I want to go to camp this winter" he lifted his gaze. He knew he wouldn't be able to keep it in until June, and in the meantime, Nico might as well get together with someone who wasn't him.
Meanwhile, in New Rome, the sun was slowly rising, illuminating the streets and alleys. Nico woke up with his alarm, getting dressed and ready to leave the apartment. Like the morning before, the streets were already bustling with people.
He retraced his steps, arriving at the school. He sat down at the same desk, occasionally glancing out the window. Slowly, the classroom filled with the same faces he had seen yesterday. Some began to point at him; apparently, word had started to spread. Nico sighed, hoping the story wouldn't drag on like it had years ago at Camp Half-Blood.
The bell rang, signaling the entrance of a new teacher who introduced himself as the science teacher. The lesson lasted longer than he had imagined; he took notes in his notebook, occasionally following along in the textbook. He had decided to apply himself, or at least try; for now, the lesson didn't seem too bad, the hardest part was waking up early every morning.
When the final bell rang, Nico let out a sigh of relief. He left after everyone else, who were whispering and murmuring his name. He didn't realize he was so interesting.
Before returning home, he stopped at a shop in the city, buying some groceries to restock both the fridge and pantry. That evening, he would finally have something to eat!
As he arrived at the door of his new home, he found Jason waiting for him, who apparently someone (thanks Hazel) had told where to find him. "Hi" he greeted, opening the door and inviting him in. Jason returned the greeting, following him up to the first floor and entering the apartment. "Wow! Isn't it a bit too bright?" the son of Jupiter commented, looking around. Nico didn't respond; he simply went to the kitchen and shelved the groceries. "Did Reyna send you?" he asked the boy, who had meanwhile taken a seat. "Hazel did" he replied. "She also mentioned something about your conversation" he said rather evasively. Nico's face went pale, then flushed. As soon as he saw her again, he would give her a good talk about what it meant to keep secrets. "What did she tell you?" Nico asked, sitting down as well.
"Almost everything" Jason replied, looking him in the eyes. Nico ran a hand over his face, this had to be a joke, yet the other seemed so serious.
"So you know" he swallowed so loudly that he felt his Adam's apple rise and then fall.
"Yes"
"So she told you that I like Will" the boy sighed, still unable to believe that his sister had betrayed him. Jason raised a blond eyebrow, crossing his arms on the table. "No, she didn't tell me that" he winked. Nico parted his lips, he'd been tricked. "Actually, Hazel didn't tell me anything" he barely held back a laugh. "But it wasn't exactly a secret that you liked him" he quickly added. Nico didn't know what to think anymore, all of this had really caught him off guard and left him speechless. "So" Jason continued. "When do you plan on telling him?" he became more serious. Nico still didn't answer, it was a question that too many people were asking him now, and Jason didn't know about the last message. At that thought, he suddenly felt sad.
"I don't know" he murmured, feeling tears prickling in his eyes. "Probably never" he confessed, lowering his gaze.
Jason looked at him confused, it had been weeks since that defeated expression had been part of Nico. Something must have happened in those two days. "Why? What happened?" he asked quickly. Nico took a long sigh, trying to control those emotions that were unsettling him too much. "We talked last night" he told him about the conversation from the previous evening, then recounting the events of the night during the game, and adding the kiss at the hill. It felt strange to talk about it with another guy, but Jason turned out to be a good listener, and incredibly, with him, the words came out spontaneously without needing to be moderated.
The son of Jupiter pursed his lips slightly, not missing a word of what Nico had told him. "Well, it seems pretty clear that he likes you" Jason pronounced.
"So why doesn't he tell me?" Nico rolled his eyes.
Jason shrugged. "Maybe he doesn't know how" he suggested. "Perhaps, like you, he's afraid of your reaction" he added. "But if he can't make the first move, you could"
Nico parted his lips, he had never considered the idea of doing it himself. He had always waited for Will to make the first move or at least open up enough to allow Nico to talk to him. Jason's words completely flipped the situation. "Maybe you're right" he pursed his lips to the side, as if he were thinking about something. "But if I have to do it, I'll do it at camp, even if it means waiting until June."
"Just don't wait too long" Jason advised, seeming to take the matter to heart.
"Trust me, I won't"
Jason stayed a bit longer, now that he had freed himself of that burden even with him, it seemed easier to talk to him.
"I'll be in touch" Jason promised before leaving. "And don't worry, I won't spread it around" he said, hugging him before heading out and returning to the Roman camp.
Nico sighed heavily, he was alone again in that large, overly bright apartment.
Before unpacking his backpack, still full of books and notebooks, he ate something, then brought a chocolate bar to his room to nibble on while looking at the pages the teacher had explained. A part of him told him he could do it tomorrow, that they would go on with the explanations anyway, while the other advised him to at least give them a read and not fall behind with the schedule from the start. He decided to listen to his more rational side.
Under the light of the lamp, he began reading those few pages, jotting down some notes. There were no doubts, he would really make an effort that year.
He continued until his eyes grew heavy, and at the fourth yawn, he closed everything and finally got into bed.
In Austin, the son of Apollo paced back and forth in his room, waiting for Nico to call as they had agreed. Will had been looking forward to that moment all day since that morning, he had to tell him about the camp and that they would spend the winter break together. He was so excited when his mother allowed him to go that he would have contacted him immediately if it weren't for school.
The boy sighed, then checked the time. It was almost midnight, and it was clear now that he wouldn't call anymore. He sat on the mattress, it hadn't gone as he hoped, maybe he would hear from him tomorrow, and if not, he would call him himself. "And then what do I tell him?" he said to himself, running a hand over his face. He knew he couldn't bear to see that look again, at the very least he owed him an explanation.
He fell back, landing on the soft bed that seemed to want to embrace him, letting his thoughts take over his mind as had been happening for some time now; and enveloped by his thousand conflicting thoughts, he finally managed to fall asleep.

[CHAPTER 19]
THE SEASHELL SOUNDED AGAIN, BRINGING THE DEMIGOD BACK TO REALITY. He didn't feel much like going to the mess hall that evening, he would have preferred to stay there in the silence and darkness of his cabin, which during winter nights seemed even more gloomy and deserted.
After a noisy sigh, he pulled himself up, leaving the cabin and heading towards the pavilion. Night fell quickly on the camp, the fog seemed to cling to him, and the shadows seemed to lengthen as if bowing to him. Only the torches illuminated the camp.
The mess hall, the only truly illuminated part of the camp, was already full of demigods sitting at tables, filling the cold and gloomy air with pleasant and warm laughter. Waiting for him at the table was Jason, hand in hand with Piper—who had arrived later that afternoon. The two were so engrossed in conversation that they didn't notice Nico's arrival until he cleared his throat, casting a veil of embarrassment between them.
"Welcome back!" exclaimed Piper, releasing her hand from her boyfriend's. "Everything okay in New Rome?"
Nico shrugged, briefly recounting his months spent there. He mainly talked about school, glossing over the kindness of his classmates.
"Well, nothing special" concluded the son of Hades, taking his plate to make his offering, followed by the other two. "And with your friend?" whispered Piper.
"Normal" he said, glancing at Jason, hoping he hadn't said too much.
The three demigods threw their offerings into the fire, making silent requests or thanks to the gods. Together they returned to the table, which among all was the farthest from the warmth of the fire. "Have you talked much during these months?" Piper asked again, subsequently ordering her goblet to fill with apple juice. "Sometimes" said Nico, unable to help but look up at Jason. "We mainly talked about school"
Piper nodded, hoping to extract some more information from him. Jason had never told her anything in his Iris messages.
"He started a singing course" he told her, although she expected to hear something else. "A what?" "Singing course" he repeated without realizing he was smiling. "He likes singing. I think he has a nice voice though" "he explained briefly, and Piper glanced at Jason, confident that he knew more about it.
The evening continued fairly quietly, Piper occasionally asking questions to break the silence, and Nico was always ready to give her an answer, although in some cases, he remained rather evasive.
After dinner, some groups returned to their cabins, while others gathered around the fire. It was all different without the Apollo campers leading the choir and delighting them with their excellent rhetoric.
Nico stayed with Jason and Piper for a while, who occasionally exchanged kisses and whispered a few words in each other's ears. They stayed a bit to listen to the campers from Cabin Eleven, who entertained the few remaining with comedic scenes and hilarious stories. Later, however, even the son of Hades left, now the general mood was subdued, and even the fire was turning into a dull yellow. He bid farewell to his friends, heading towards his cabin enveloped in the cold mantle of the night.
That night, he was truly determined to sleep, pushing every possible thought from his head, ignoring those annoying and stubborn butterflies in his stomach. The moment when Will would arrive was getting closer and this thought had been tormenting him for too long.
He turned towards the window overlooking the outside; the sky was covered with gray clouds that obscured the stars and the moon as they passed by. The trees in the forest were now completely devoid of their green foliage, and even the grunts and screams of the monsters that lived in the jungle had died down with the arrival of December. That silence seemed truly unnatural.
The son of Hades curled up tighter in the sheets, ignoring the voices swirling in his head. He had no intention of running away this time; he would do as Percy had told him: face it, with head held high, leaving your fears behind.
In the end, he managed to fall asleep, albeit consumed by dreams that slowly turned into nightmares. It had been a while since he had dreamed of anything, and he was certain that something was happening outside of that camp, something he didn't even want to know about. The nightmare then stopped, bringing him back to his more peaceful dreams until they disappeared along with the first cold lights of dawn.
Nico didn't immediately get up; he simply stayed still, staring at the landscape slowly waking up. His stomach was churning, as before an exam. Suddenly, his strength seemed to desert him; he would have liked to stay in bed, hidden under the sheets, or disappear somewhere and reappear later, but a part of him didn't really want to do that. With a push of courage, he got up, feeling the icy floor of the cabin beneath his feet.
He got ready carefully, taking more time than usual in the bathroom; he wanted to make a good impression that morning. From the wardrobe, he chose a high-necked sweater he had found in a store in New Rome; the saleswoman had told him it fit him like a glove, and indeed, it suited him well.
After encouraging himself in front of the mirror, he headed out towards the pavilion. He didn't have much of an appetite that morning; the butterflies in his stomach didn't stop moving for a moment.
As every day, Jason was waiting for him at the table, sitting next to Piper, who was smiling at him in a strange way. "Good morning" Piper greeted, widening her smile. Nico responded with a nod, sitting down at the table and being served immediately. "Jason told me your friend should be arriving today"
Nico sighed, confirming what Piper already knew. From the way Piper kept staring at him, he was pretty sure Jason had told her more than just about his friend's upcoming arrival. "Do you know when he'll arrive?" the girl asked.
"I think in the afternoon" he replied, although he didn't really know himself when he would arrive. "We'll probably go to the bay, there's never anyone there" he added, resigned to the fact that they wouldn't leave him alone until he told them all about his plans. "That's a good idea" Piper nodded. "Have you prepared a speech?" she asked, and Nico shook his head in response. "I'll improvise" he told her, mentioning his feeble attempts in front of the mirror.
"You'll loosen up when you have him in front of you" Jason reassured him, understanding the difficulty of expressing one's feelings in words.
They talked a bit more; the daughter of Aphrodite occasionally gave him some advice, like not losing eye contact. Piper was fantastic, spontaneous, and genuine; he should have told her before instead of keeping it to himself. "Don't make the speech too long, get to the point" the girl concluded, giving him some simple tips. Nico truly appreciated that gesture.

[CHAPTER 18]
IT WAS ALWAYS DIFFICULT TO RETURN TO THAT CAMP, ESPECIALLY AT THAT TIME OF YEAR. The snow had settled on the ground, some kids were engaged in snowball fights, while others were building snowmen that vaguely resembled Mr. D. some looked more like baby Minotaurs or other mythological figures.
He took in a deep breath of the cold air of the camp, it was definitely different from New Rome. There were still few demigods inside—some would arrive in the afternoon, others the next day.
He went to settle into his cabin, unpacking his belongings. Somehow, it felt good to be back at the camp.
Nico was about to throw himself onto the bed and rest after that journey through the shadows, when someone knocked on the door of his cabin. With a sigh, he got up and went to open it, only to be greeted by the son of Jupiter. Nico somehow expected him—it had been strange not to encounter him at the entrance.
"How was the trip?" he asked, stepping into the cabin, which was the complete opposite of his apartment. Nico sighed, closing the door. "Fine" he replied, sitting back on the bed. How much he wanted to sleep.
"And how are things going at the camp? Have they started decorating everything yet?" he chuckled, looking around. It was strange, but he had never been inside there before. That cabin was unsettling, a part of him feared it was a vague reproduction of Hades' palace, the only place Nico had ever truly lived. The walls were high and so dark they seemed made of shadows. Jason avoided getting too close, almost afraid of being sucked in. The floor was so polished it created the illusion of walking on air. There weren't many decorations on the walls, just reliefs and torches that reflected—in an almost agonizing dance—the reflections of that green light. Most of the windows—which he noticed had very particular details—were positioned to the west, only a couple to the east that illuminated a corner of the room where he had placed some sort of altar, next to it was a pomegranate vase, its fruits as red as freshly spilled blood. He turned his gaze to Nico, who was sitting on the white poplar bed, a part of him imagined it came directly from Hades. Suddenly Jason found his own cabin—with that statue of Zeus towering over everything—not so bad after all. "Yes" Nico replied, pretending not to notice the tension in his friend's eyes. There was nothing inside that could hurt him. "The Temple of Saturn is overflowing with gifts" he said without much enthusiasm. "Frank said they'll be going overboard or something this year, whatever that means" he muttered, lying back on the mattress, crossing his hands behind his head. Jason chuckled; apparently, the Roman boy had understood well what his former legion intended to do. "Is there anything happening here?" Jason asked. After Annabeth, Nico was the one who knew the most, being one of the few to respect and understand the traditions of ancient Greece.
"In reality, no" he replied, looking up at the ceiling, which was also so dark it seemed invisible. "Once upon a time, they used to celebrate the abundance of harvests and perform theatrical performances that told the story of Mr. D's birth" he explained. "But honestly, no one does it anymore"
Jason felt a bit disappointed; he was used to celebrating and feasting at this time of year. "So it'll be just like any other month" the son of Jupiter concluded. Nico lowered his head toward him, staring at him for a few moments without saying a word. He too would have liked to say it was just like any other month. "Yeah, well, at least there's snow" he tried to spin it differently; everyone at the camp enjoyed the snow, except for the children of Demeter. His friend sighed, it was a meager consolation. Nico sat back down, feeling a certain sympathy for Jason, everything was truly new to him.
Then in the distance, the conch shell sounded, they had been chatting for so long that they hadn't noticed how late it had become. They went out together, careful not to slip on the icy steps, heading toward the mess hall and sitting at their usual spot.
As soon as they settled, they were served by the graceful nymphs, who gracefully seemed to dance among the tables serving the demigods. Then everyone made their offerings to the bonfire, thanking one of the gods. Nico also made his offering, asking something from his father, although perhaps he should have asked a particular goddess. He shrugged, sighing heavily, hoping nonetheless that he had been listened to and that his father hadn't started laughing with some skeleton.
"You look— upset" Jason commented, seeing him return all sulky, Nico hadn't realized he was so lost in his thoughts. "Yeah, I was just thinking about something" he said, sitting down and starting to eat.
"Does it have to do with..." his friend didn't need to finish the sentence—by now, he knew and it was clear who he was talking about. Nico sighed; ever since he had told him, it had become easier to talk about it. "Yes" he confirmed. "We talked last night, and he said he would spend the holidays here at the camp this winter"
Jason's eyes lit up, finally some good news. "Isn't that awesome?"
"I guess so" Nico replied, playing with his food. "I don't know what to say to him" he raised his gaze, looking him straight in the eyes, explaining his problem, which didn't seem like much when said out loud.
"You're making too much of it" he smiled at him. "Just tell him things as they are, and that's it"
Nico just sighed, it wasn't as simple as he thought. "Yes. maybe" he muttered, finally eating something.
Later that afternoon, they went to the basketball court, one of the few activities left to do at the camp besides sparring. Since neither of them felt like pulling out their swords, they went to the court to shoot some hoops. They started with a simple friendly game to warm up their muscles, but it quickly turned into a full-on one-on-one match. Jason was quite fast but often slipped on the ice, while Nico wasn't doing too bad either. Sometimes he seemed to appear like a shadow behind Jason and steal the ball, and then Jason would respond by leveraging his acrobatic skills.
They ended up drenched in sweat, panting heavily, with laughter ready to burst out. It had been a while since Nico had enjoyed himself so much at Camp Half-Blood.
"Gods! You got me good" Jason gasped as he wiped his icy forehead.
"You did the same" Nico replied, catching his breath.
They walked back up the court together, shivering down their spines, heading toward their respective cabins where a long and pleasant hot shower awaited them. It had been a real gamble to go to the basketball court and let their competitive instincts take over, it would be fortunate not to catch a cold.
The son of Hades enjoyed under the hot water for a while, emerging from the bathroom shrouded in a cloud of steam. He put on a sweater and wrapped in clean clothes, finally lay down on the bed to rest.
He didn't really fall asleep, he mostly stared at an indistinct point on the ceiling, thinking, as he has often done in these last months, improvising a hypothetical monologue in which, for once, he would monopolize the conversation.

nda. On this chapter I had some doubts. The fanfiction you are reading is almost ten years old, and there are many inaccuracies that may have been explained in later books. The thing about demigods changing tables seemed like something I had read, but now that many years have passed, I'm not sure anymore. For plot reasons, let's pretend they can do it.

[CHAPTER 4]
SINCE THE WAR HAD ENDEND and the two camps had started to mix to learn new training techniques, the cafeteria had slowly begun to change like that of New Rome, although some who preferred the status quo wrinkled their noses at seeing demigods from other cabins sitting at different tables.
The first time was the evening when Jason declared that he wanted to stay at the camp, feeling finally in a place he could call home. That evening he abruptly got up from his lonely table and sat down at Aphrodite's one, causing surprise and dissent from some, but certainly the table of the goddess of love did not disagree with hosting the handsome blonde. That evening, there was a lot of movement in the mess hall, with demigods moving from table to table, making dinner more chaotic and lively. After making his offering in the fire, with no particular request or prayer, Nico returned to his table, preferring solitude and tranquility, but unfortunately not everyone respected his lifestyle. Jason was keeping him company, as he had promised to do more often during meals. "Did Aphrodite kick you out, Grace?" Nico asked with a hint of irony, taking a sip from his goblet. Jason tried to suppress a laugh. "If you want, I can leave you alone" he replied, picking up a warm loaf of bread. The boy in front of him raised an eyebrow, as if he would get up in response to an affirmative answer. "Do as you please" he grumbled.
"So—" spoke the son of Jupiter after a while, catching Nico's attention. "We'll see again tomorrow morning for training at the arena?" Jason asked, spearing some asparagus with his fork. Nico remained silent for a moment, staring at his friend's face. He had forgotten that he had promised to train with Jason the next morning. "Ah" he exclaimed embarrassedly. "No. No, I—I have something else to do" he muttered, looking down at his plate. At that response, Jason completely lost interest in dinner. He was now much more curious about what Nico had to do that was better than training with him. "And what would that be?" he asked, crossing his arms on the table. Nico frowned, as if he was really obligated to answer him. "It's none of your business" he replied abruptly, taking another sip from his goblet and pointing his eyes towards the table of the seventh house, always lively and sunny as only the children of the sun god could be. "You know that I'll find out anyway" Jason smiled wryly. After all, sooner or later, everyone in the camp would find out about each other's business, and with that kind of provocation, Nico grumbled. He valued his privacy, but agreed that the boy would find out from external sources and subsequently pester him with stupid questions. "Fine" he sighed, placing his goblet on the table. "I'm going for a boat ride" he shrugged, trying to seem as annoyed as possible. "Oh really?" Jason placed his hand on his face, surprised by that response. Everyone knew that for some demigods, certain elements were off-limits. "Yes, Jason" Nico snapped, rolling his eyes. "And with whom are you going?" the handsome blond boy whispered, getting closer. At that proximity, Nico moved back a bit with his back, feeling his ears grow warmer. "Will asked me" he curled his lips, as if to say what can I do?
"Ah" Jason exclaimed in surprise, turning briefly to Apollo's table, where his children were having fun and entertaining with poetry and pop songs. "I didn't think you liked blonds" at that phrase, Nico almost choked on a piece of meat, causing some demigods to turn their heads out of curiosity and one in particular from the seventh table to go and see what was happening in person. When everything seemed to have returned to normal, the boy who had almost fully stood up returned to his seat, laughing at a joke from one of his brothers, avoiding looking at the table of Ade's son. "What the hell, Grace!" Nico scolded him, spitting out what was left in his throat onto a tissue. "We're just friends, I think" he explained, moving the plate out of sight. He had lost his appetite. Jason nodded, wanting to believe him. "Well, then, we'll see you after your date?" he finger-quoted, causing a certain nervousness in the boy in front of him. "As you wish" he replied, hoping that promise would shut him up. "Great".
At the end of the dinner, some groups left the cafeteria, leaving the tables full of dirt to be cleaned by the camp's harpies. Many of the boys headed to the bonfire, where it was a tradition to roast marshmallows and sing campfire songs. "Aren't you coming?" Jason asked Nico, seeing him heading up the camp to go to his cabin. "No, I'm good" he replied, distancing himself from the overly noisy crowd. "Oh—" Jason whispered. Once again, he had hoped that Nico would join them to sing the song of the Minotaur. "Good night!" the boy raised his voice to be heard by Nico, who raised his hand in return without turning around. But Nico, distracted by his thoughts for the next day, had not noticed that a figure was getting closer and closer behind him. "Planning to bolt?" the voice whispered, making the boy startle and jump. Caught off guard, he searched at his side for his sword to unsheathe it, only then remembering that he had left it in his cabin. He turned around and let out an imperceptible sigh. "Hasn't anyone taught you not to sneak up on people, especially at night!" he scolded. "I could have skewered you" he lifted his eyes to the sky. "Oh yeah?" Will asked amusedly. "And with what?" he smiled, indicating the left side devoid of his sword. "You're lucky I left it in the cabin" Nico pressed his lips together to avoid saying something inappropriate. Years of wandering outside had taught him to sharpen his senses, it was just a coincidence that the sword had been left in the cabin. However, Will shrugged "You still haven't answered my question, though" continued the boy. "What question?" Nico sighed, curiously raising an eyebrow. "Are you making a run for it?" Will repeated, hoping to convince him to stay at the camp and sing by the fire. "Yes" he replied directly, resuming his path towards cabin number 13. "Come on! Everyone's there" Will followed him. "Correct" that was precisely the reason he didn't want to go there. "You don't have to sing" Will smiled, his teeth shining even in the dark. "I'll take care of that" Nico stopped, muttering some not very flattering words in his mother tongue. "What did you say?" the boy was curious. "I said I'm coming" he lied, but Will didn't know Italian. "But only for five minutes" and saying that, the two of them headed towards the bonfire.
Without too much fuss, the two sat down in the middle of the group. Nico greeted Jason with a nod, who smiled seeing that his friend had changed his mind, then seeing him close to Will, it all became clear. Nico, slightly embarrassed, sat down near the cabin led by Will, as the boy had insisted so much for him to sit beside him. Will passed some marshmallows for Nico to roast so he wouldn't get bored while the others sang. Nico thanked him, already toasting the candy, listening enchanted to the intoned voices of the Apollo cabin mixed with the off-key ones of the others. He was listening in particular to one voice, the only one he really liked: Will had a really beautiful tone, melodic, warm. Nico would never admit it, but he would have stayed listening to him sing for hours and even though the boy repeated that he was only good at treating wounds, Nico found that he was also good at many other things worthy of a son of Apollo. At the second song, Will decided to take a break and talk to Nico, who had ignored him all that time. "Are you having fun?" asked the boy. Nico looked at him, ready to give him an another negative answer, but seeing Will's sunny face, with that beautiful smile, he couldn't tell him that he was bored to death. "Yes" he simply replied, breaking the roasted candy off the stick. "Thanks for accepting my invitation" the boy whispered in his ear, with all that noise it was difficult to hear anything. "It will be the last time you convince me to do it" Nico replied in the boy's ear.
On the other side of the bonfire, Jason never took his eyes off the two. It was the first time he had seen Nico smile and laugh at a joke. "What are you staring at?" Piper asked at one point, noticing that her boyfriend had been silent the whole time staring ahead. "What do you think?" he whispered to the girl, leaning close to her ear. Piper remained perplexed for a moment, not understanding the question, then looked to where Jason was looking, stunned. "Since when can he smile?" she asked ironically, laughing to herself. "Is that Will he's talking to?" the girl asked, who had not yet found a way to learn the names of the members of the cabins. "Exactly him" Jason replied, bending his lips in a crooked smile. "They look really good together" the girl whispered, and Jason couldn't agree more.

[CHAPTER 20]
THERE WASN'T MUCH TO DO THAT MORNING AT THE CAMP. MANY ACTIVITIES WERE CLOSED FOR THE WINTER SEASON. Jason suggested to Nico that they do something indoors to pass the time. Nico, shrugged, agreeing to whatever his friend had in mind. Jason then took him to do some manual work, which was quite popular among demigods in December.
"You could give him a vase" Jason suggested ironically as they entered the pottery workshop. "Not a chance" Nico replied, perhaps too seriously, following him into the workshop.
The interior smelled of wood and clay. As soon as the two boys stepped inside, they were embraced by the warmth of the fire. It wasn't by chance that this activity was so popular among campers in the winter. The two boys took a table for two, jokingly challenging each other to see who could do the worse job. Neither of them was very skilled in handicrafts; they preferred to leave those things to someone more talented and patient, but at the moment, it was a good excuse to spend time indoors and stay warm.
So they began to shape the clay, molding it as best they could. Most of the time—whatever they were making—ended up either too crooked or too lopsided, requiring them to start over from scratch.
Jason sighed several times; the vase he was making kept collapsing in on itself. "You're getting it too wet" Nico told him, who instead seemed to find the activity more enjoyable than expected. It was easier to push away anxiety when one's hands were busy.
"Do you think so?" he raised an eyebrow, thinking he had used the right amount of water. The boy beside him nodded, giving him the rest of his clay that he no longer needed.
At the end of the day, Jason won that bet, finding his own work all crumbled. Ceramics just weren't his thing. Nico's vase, on the other hand, turned out well.
"Are you going to paint something?" Jason asked, propping his elbow on the table to hold his head with one hand. Nico pursed his lips, staring at the vase that still needed to be fired. He wasn't much of a painter, but if he could, he would have liked to depict the danse macabre on it, even though it had little to do with the Greeks.
"I'll probably leave it as it is" he said. It wasn't worth voicing his thoughts.
In the distance, the conch shell sounded, signaling that time had really flown by that morning. They cleaned the dry clay off their hands, taking off the clay-stained aprons and patches of color. Along with the other demigods who had locked themselves in there, they headed towards the dining hall, and suddenly Nico's heart began to pound hard in his chest: Will's arrival at the camp was getting closer and closer.
It was difficult for him to eat lunch. He kept staring at the entrance of the camp, impatiently waiting for his arrival.
"You're making me anxious too, please relax" Jason said, putting his fork down. All the panic his friend was feeling was somehow transferring to him.
"What if I'm doing something stupid?" he asked more to himself than to the son of Jupiter. All that energy he had, those pep talks he had with himself in front of the mirror, suddenly all faded away. He wasn't so sure anymore if he could do it, if he could talk to him about his feelings; in reality, it was something he never did well. "You're just nervous" Jason told him, taking a sip from his chalice. "You'll see, once you're alone wirh him, it'll be fine"
Nico just sighed, looking at the grilled food on his plate: he really wanted to believe Jason's words, but it was so difficult to push away all those negative thoughts and fears that arose, and with every passing minute, it was getting worse.
After lunch, Nico managed to eat something, or rather he forced himself to. He said goodbye to Jason, who went to the Greek class; he had become good at translations, but the words were still difficult for him to pronounce. He often confused Greek terms with Latin ones.
Nico instead went to the entrance of the camp; there was no point pretending to do something while waiting for his arrival. He sat down on a cut log, propping his elbow on his knee to rest his cheek on his hand. Time suddenly seemed to slow down; the hours never passed, the minutes remained the same, and the knot in his stomach grew stronger. Then, at the end of the valley, a door closed, and the engine of a car started again. His heart literally leaped into his throat.
It was hard to see who it was because of a light mist, but as the demigod got closer, Nico slowly started to breathe again, relaxing his previously tense shoulders. He had forgotten that Percy also spent the winter at the camp with Annabeth—she had driven there with him. "Hey Nico!" Percy greeted, approaching his friend and leaving the suitcases with Annabeth. "What are you doing here all alone?" he asked, and before Nico could answer, he continued. "Come with us! You have to tell us a lot about New Rome" he dragged him away from the camp entrance. "You could have sent me a message once in a while" Percy muttered ironically. Nico had missed that suffocating guy.
"I had better things to do" he replied, leaving Percy taken aback.
"Like what?" Percy asked curiously. Annabeth also approached, curious about the conversation.
Nico averted his gaze from Percy's, his cheeks turning a little red. "Oooh!" the two exclaimed in unison, noticing his embarrassed face. "And what did you talk about?" Annabeth asked.
"Nothing much" he briefly recounted the conversations they had had over those months, glossing over some small details.
"So he still doesn't know?" Annabeth concluded. Her boyfriend hadn't been able to keep the secret for long, but Nico no longer cared about that.
"No" he replied. "But he should be arriving at the camp today, so—" he didn't finish the sentence, it was obvious what he was about to say.
Together they went to the pavilion, there were many things they needed to catch up on, and then they had all the time to unpack their bags. Both Percy and Annabeth bombarded him with questions about New Rome, particularly about how he was doing there and if the people were friendly. They didn't want to end up with unfriendly neighbors. So Nico explained the situation that had arisen: it wasn't easy to get used to the changes, it would take years before everything was truly accepted. "Some tolerate it, I think, they understood what they were going against and preferred to abandon their ideals rather than end up in chaos" he explained. "Others are still sulking and would rather barricade themselves inside their walls than let their secrets out" he told them everything Reyna and Frank had explained to him in his first month in the new city. "So should we not expect a warm welcome?" Annabeth deduced. Nico simply shrugged. "Maybe not" he sighed, nervously glancing at the camp gate. He would arrive any moment now.
Without beating around the bush, the son of Hades got up, saying he was going to the bay. Percy gave him a thumbs up, wishing him all the best. Annabeth also gave him some courage, which was what he needed most at the moment.
He left the pavilion behind, heading towards the bay. At first, he hadn't thought about it, but suddenly he remembered that it had been the site of their first friends' outing, where Will had asked him to meet him that afternoon when he had gone to practice archery. He couldn't believe so much time had passed since then, it seemed like just a few weeks ago.
He sat down on a rock, staring at the waves and turning his back to everything else. He liked the sound of the sea, the surf breaking on the beach. It was somehow relaxing, as if the waves were carrying away his darkest thoughts.
The sun slowly descended, on the verge of being swallowed by the horizon. The bright, rosy colors of the sky turned purple, blending with the warm orange of the sun.
Behind him, he heard the sound of footsteps, mingled with the clinking of stones being moved. It was funny, but he was certain that even among a thousand steps, he would be able to recognize his. He turned towards that figure bathed in the late afternoon sun, which was now getting closer and closer. Nico stood up, his hands cold, and his heart in his chest seemed like it could burst at any moment.
"Percy told me I'd find you here" he said, nervously lowering his gaze. Will had probably noticed the place they were in.
"He told you right" replied the son of Hades, nervously playing with the ring he had on his finger. It was a gesture that Will had often seen him do when they were together. "I have to tell you something" added the son of Hades, staring into the blue of his eyes, which, as the sun set, took on various intense shades.
"Me too" the son of Apollo swallowed, approaching Nico.
It felt strange to Nico to see him in a burgundy hoodie and jeans instead of the usual orange camp outfit.
"Go first" Nico's heart started pounding harder as he approached Will, who was now only about thirty centimeters away.
"No, you" Will smiled awkwardly, encouraging him with a hand gesture to speak first.
"Okay, fine" he muttered, looking down at the ring he still hadn't stopped fidgeting with. "It's something important" he raised his gaze again as Piper had told him to do.
"Alright" the son of Apollo tried to hold back a laugh, it was funny to see him so nervous.
"Okay" he replied, taking some time to organize his thoughts. "I wanted to tell you that the weeks we spent together at the camp were the best of my life. I was scared at first to spend time together, afraid you might get tired of me like most people do" instinctively, he pursed his lips in a small grimace. "I'm not very good with these things, with feelings, words, living people in general— but I wanted to tell you that for me, the little time we spent together laughing and talking meant a lot. And that time you were right when you told me there's always time to make new and even better memories, you proved it to me every day we spent together. Both at the camp and through Iris messages" he looked into his eyes, and a delicate smile was slowly forming. "What I—what I mean is that I would like to build more memories... with you, Will" his cheeks flushed a bit.
Will curled his lips slightly, as if considering those words, stepping closer to Nico. A veil of silence fell between them; neither spoke anymore.
"So, Solace, did you get it, right?" Nico interrupted that silence, not knowing how else to say it.
The son of Apollo looked into those intense black eyes, sure that he understood. He smiled timidly, lowering his gaze to his own white fingers that never stopped playing with that silver skull-shaped ring. He nodded, bringing his attention back to Nico's tense face, which seemed impatient to hear his response. "I would like to build new memories with you too" he replied, smiling.
"Really?" Nico whispered, letting out a breath.
"Really" Will nodded, getting closer.
Once again, neither of them spoke, they let a silence fall interrupted only by the lapping of the waves breaking on the shore. Meanwhile, the sun was slowly setting to make way for the night. Nico bit his lip, he had never thought about what would come next, it couldn't end like this, perhaps even Will expected something and was now waiting for it.
"Well then—" Nico said quickly, interrupting that silence. "If you agree I'd like to start with this kind of memory" he took another step forward, placing a hand on Will's warm cheek, leaning towards his face to imprint his first kiss on his lips. Neither of them actually expected it; it was such a spontaneous gesture. That, and they both believed, would be the best memory. December finally acquired a different meaning for Nico and also for Will.
That kiss lasted only a few seconds, which for them seemed to last an eternity. They stayed staring into each other's eyes for a while, both with a smile on their lips and hearts beating fast.
Nico had never noticed it before, but Will smelled like sunscreen and wildflowers. The son of Apollo was right, he truly brought summer into the darkest and coldest day of the year.

[CHAPTER 2]
THAT HERBAL INFUSION Will had prepared for him was slowly beginning to take effect.
In a few days, Nico felt his strength returning, although not enough to summon an army of zombies or any specters. During that week, the son of Apollo followed his progress step by step, enthusiastic to see Nico back in good health and with rosier cheeks. The two found themselves spending that week together, talking mostly about the side effects that an abrupt effort might have during the intake of that kind of energy drink made from herbs. Nico began to enjoy spending time with Will, even though he often repeated the same things to him, and he responded in the same way. It had to be said, however, that the son of Apollo really did his best to make him feel at ease, knowing that it was not easy for him to trust someone other than himself. In a corner of his mind, Will began to wonder what had happened to Nico di Angelo in those years, remembering perfectly the first time he met him at Camp Half-Blood: sunny, energetic, none of the newcomers to the camp could imagine that the son of Hades was once the opposite of what he was now. Not that there was anything wrong with Nico now, it was just that Will no longer wanted to see him feel like he was without someone who cared for him. He would do anything to see that beautiful smile that spread across the boy's face again, bending over in two graceful dimples. He knew that deep down, somewhere under that grim expression, there was still that eleven-year-old boy who played hide-and-seek with the nymphs of the woods; he just had to be patient and wait for Nico to open up to him. However, this meant building a solid relationship of trust first. Will couldn't have asked for anything better. Then the end of that week came, and the two found themselves having one last chat in the infirmary. "See? You also have a much better complexion" exclaimed Will, proudly looking at Nico's no longer cadaverous skin. "From tomorrow, you could already take a walk in the dark" he suggested. The two were face to face, and Nico couldn't believe what he had just heard. "Are you serious?" he asked, to make sure he wasn't imagining it. "Yes" Will affirmed, smiling. "But I'm not saying to go, I don't know, to Bali and back. Try to do it in the camp, so if you faint, I can be around" he laughed as if it were a very funny joke, but they both knew that the son of Hades would be capable of disappearing for weeks. Nico nodded, he wasn't planning on traveling the world, at least not immediately. "I'll stay around" he promised, hinting at an imperceptible smile. "But wait!" he exclaimed a moment later, attracting Will's attention. "Does that mean we won't see each other for—" he made a vague gesture with his hand, he wasn't good with words, but he was sure the boy had understood. Will gave a laugh, looking at his joined hands. "The week is over" he curled his lips, as if he had just realized that the last day had arrived. "But that doesn't mean we can't hang out" he raised his blue eyes. "I'd like that" he added, showing a shy smile. Nico didn't think that Apollo's children could be shy. "I'd like that too" Nico replied after a few seconds, managing to show a faint smile.
It had been five days since that last chat, and Nico was now able to transport himself in the shadow for a few kilometers, occasionally scaring some child of Ares by accidentally appearing behind them. Will had not contacted him or asked about his favorite patient, nor had Nico done the same. The boy felt quite awkward about it all, not understanding how he should take Will's words. He didn't deny being scared, a situation like this had never happened to him before, he wanted to know how to read those words, what did that "hanging out" mean. He was obsessed with the idea that Will ultimately saw him simply as another boy from Camp Half-Blood, but with a slightly more terrifying parent to stay away from. Perhaps he had only said so to be polite. He spent those days wandering around the camp without a specific destination, and although by now the other campers had grown used to his presence and would greet him without suppressing a sense of disgust or fear, Nico didn't feel completely accepted. He only felt that way when he spent time with Will, where everything seemed to come alive, and he felt like a simple, happy boy again. At that thought, he decided to let go of his crazy thoughts; he preferred to get to know Will as a friend rather than lose him due to his unfounded doubts.
He walked briskly towards the archery range. It was the first time he had set foot there. Every time someone had suggested that he go there to train, he would disappear like a shadow until one day everyone decided to give up and let him do whatever he wanted. That was officially his first time at the range. He didn't know exactly what to do or who to talk to in order to get a bow and quiver, so he decided to ask one of the Apollo campers who was helping a young demigod hold a bow. "Down there" the camper pointed out, after spending five minutes trying to figure out if Nico was really there or some sort of hallucination. Nico thanked him and chose the least worn bow from the basket, along with a quiver. He returned to his target, feeling quite stupid at that moment, but he knew it was the right thing to do to get Will's attention. He took an arrow from the quiver behind his back, nocked it between the taut string and the bow — it wasn't as simple as he thought — took aim and released the arrow, which embedded itself in the ground a meter away from the target. He sighed as he went to retrieve the arrow. Having the eyes of the other campers on him did nothing to help his concentration. He tried again, putting more force into it, managing to hit the target only in the white part, leaving the arrow hanging until it fell to the ground again. He was about to go retrieve it when a voice he knew well stopped him. "And we thought Percy was a disaster" commented the boy who had seen Nico shoot his second arrow from behind. Nico turned towards the boy, who was staring at him with crossed arms and a sarcastic smile. Will chuckled and approached him, stealing another arrow from his quiver. "Let me show you how to do it" he said, turning him towards the target and helping him position the arrow better. "You need to raise your elbow higher and bend your knees" he corrected his posture, standing behind him. "Draw the bow taut" he whispered near his ear, releasing his grip on his arms and as soon as he felt them slip away he shot the arrow, which went to plant itself in the third ring. "Congratulations!" exclaimed Will, patting him on the shoulder. "Maybe you're not a hopeless case like our friend".
They kept trying until all the arrows were gone, with Will by his side he managed to hit the target a couple of times, although he mostly hit the outer circles. "With a little training, you could become a great archer" he encouraged him, he was rather satisfied with his small improvements. Nico just smiled gratefully, not knowing exactly what to say to him, he didn't want to disappear that way, but how could he explain how he felt about people if he couldn't even explain it to himself? He didn't want to make Will feel guilty, he had done his best to open up and be a good friend. "Well then, see you later" he smiled uncertainly, seeing that the boy wasn't intending to start a conversation and then he had his shift at the infirmary. "Wait, Solace" Nico stopped him. "Listen, I don't care about all this stuff" and with a sweeping gesture of his hand he practically indicated the whole camp. "I came to see you" he confessed. "I was sincere in the infirmary, I want, well, I'd like it if we hung out" his cheeks started to warm up with what he had just said. Will remained silent, looking at that strange boy who, he didn't exactly know how, he liked. "I finish my shift at five, wait for me at the bay" he said decisively, throwing him a quick wink. "See you at five!" Nico repeated, watching him walk away.

I Start Over With You
[SOLANGELO FANFIC]
summary: After the great battle against the forces of Gaea, Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter had formed a long-lasting alliance. Everything had gone well, and everyone was ready to start anew. This included Nico, who, after confessing his feelings to Percy, was prepared to open a new chapter in his life—perhaps the happiest one the Fates had ever written.
note: the chapters will be updated every Wednesday. If you want to read upcoming chapters of the fanfiction in advance, I invite you to follow me on Patreon. [CHAPTER 15]
NICO STOOD STILL, GAZING INTO THE DARKNESS THAT SHROUDED HIS NEW ROOM. That room seemed to have grown colder after the message. He sighed before lying down on the bed, staring at the ceiling of his room and thinking about that one boy who could unsettle his mind with just one smile. He tossed and turned, wanting to try to really sleep for the night.
He fell asleep around three in the morning, with Will's sad eyes on his mind, somehow looking shattered. He had never seen that expression on that sunny face before. He was certain that whatever Will hadn't been able to tell him that night in the woods must be something important to so affect the son of the sun god.
With his head full of thoughts, he managed to fall asleep. It didn't seem like a long sleep to him; it felt like just five minutes, but the alarm clearly stated otherwise. He got up with a grunt, dressing and preparing for the first day of school.
He brought along a few things, some pens and a notebook, hoping they wouldn't start lessons right away on the first day.
The outside was kissed by the cold morning rays, slowly awakening the city. Nico took a deep breath of that air that seemed to smell like true Rome.
Lost in his memories, he made his way to the school. There was already a hustle and bustle of people on the streets accompanying younger children, and then there were older kids in groups making their way to the building. The building looked very welcoming; he hoped the inside would be too.
Finding his classroom was a real challenge. The school was larger than he had expected. But once he found it, he went to sit in one of those desks at the back of the class, near the window overlooking the courtyard.
Soon, the classroom began to fill with boys and girls, all cheerful and excited to start the year. They filled the air with warm and contagious laughter, asking each other how they had spent their holidays, ignoring the war that had just passed.
Then the bell rang, and with it came the teacher of the day. She introduced herself as their literature and Latin teacher, and then went on to outline the program they would be tackling throughout the year.
The morning seemed to fly by, perhaps because it was just an orientation day. Nico wrote down some notes on a piece of paper, names and class schedules along with the names of the books to bring.
During the break, someone had tried to strike up a conversation with Nico, but it died down when he mentioned which camp he came from or that his father was Hades. He was already used to those reactions; he had seen them in the eyes of his companions at Camp Half-Blood, although by now they had gotten somewhat used to it there.
He left in the afternoon, heading towards his new home. Outside the building, his sister was waiting for him, wearing the usual purple T-shirt from the camp. He smiled at her, hugging her as he always did when he saw her, then inviting her to come up.
Still, the apartment was empty; he had nothing to offer her except running water. He would make sure to stock the pantry the next day.
At the table, they began to talk a bit about school, how the first day had seemed to him, which according to Nico had been considered "normal" or rather, it went more or less as he expected. He also mentioned those two boys who had come to talk to him. Hazel shrugged, accustomed like him to the same welcomes.
"Speaking of more pleasant things" his sister changed the subject. "Jason sent a message to Reyna a little while ago, he said he'll come tomorrow to see how the work is going" she told him.
"Good" he managed to say, not expecting him to arrive so soon.
"Anyway, aside from Jason, what happened yesterday?" she asked, with that kindness that seemed to have been forgotten. Nico sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Do you know Will Solace?" he lowered his gaze slowly, wanting to lift that weight off his chest.
"Yes, by sight" he replied. "Has something happened to him?" she asked, immediately concerned. Her brother shook his head, crossing his arms over his chest.
"No, he's fine" he reassured her. "We spent time together, as friends" he told her everything, about the week in the infirmary, then about the canoeing, archery and even fencing lessons. He didn't spare her a single detail of those days spent smiling again. He also told her about the awkward conversations with friends, and there Hazel had to refrain from blushing, in those times people were really very explicit about certain things. "Then there was capture the flag" he said with a sigh, also telling her about that night when he had held his hand in the dark. "And that's not all" he lifted his gaze, resting his arms on the table. "On the hill, before coming here yesterday" he began, recalling in his mind that warm and pleasant memory. "Well, he kissed me. Right here" he pointed to his cheek, which still seemed warm.
Hazel remained silent, nodding at her brother's words. She knew that look; it was the same one she had when she got lost in memories of Sammy's smiles. "Nico, do you like him?" she asked.
The son of Hades didn't answer immediately, but the answer was obvious, clear as a fresh water spring. "Yes, Hazel, I like him" he confessed, unable to meet her eyes. "I like him in a completely different way than I liked Percy" he said, lifting his gaze to her amber irises. Pluto's daughter pursed her lips slightly, she wanted to see him happy finally, much like everyone else. She wanted to do something, but she knew she couldn't interfere in her brother's life; she would never forgive herself. "Nico, you have to tell him" she reached out, taking his hand, locking her eyes with her brother's dark and brooding ones.
"Hazel, I can't" his voice trembled; he had been there once before, hating the pain that emotion brought. "Who's to say he feels the same way?" he asked more to himself than to his sister.
Hazel didn't respond, Nico's question was a difficult one.
"No one tells you" she replied. "But you should try, from the way you've talked about him, it seems like this Will is looking for a different kind of relationship" she smiled. "Trust what you feel and tell him" the girl added, placing her hand on his wrist.
"I don't know, Hazel, I don't want to lose him as a friend" he looked at his sister, revealing his biggest fear.
"Trust me" she smiled.
Nico sighed and lowered his gaze. He knew Hazel was right, and so were the others. In a corner of his mind, he also wanted to talk to Will about his feelings that had developed over the course of the summer. Even Zephyr had warned him about his own feelings. He had to be honest and talk to Will, he couldn't keep it inside. "I'll try"
Before it got dark, Hazel said her goodbyes, hugging him one last time before leaving the apartment.
The boy went to his room, putting on something more comfortable, then glanced at the books still sealed in plastic wrap on the desk. He hadn't had a chance to take a peek yet. He randomly picked one, removing the protective film and started reading a few pages. They weren't bad, the words were large and spaced enough for him to read without them starting to blur together. Of course, it was still a struggle; his vision started to blur after the first two lines, but at least what he read more or less stuck in his mind.
The next moment, he remembered the schedule for the following day, where he had marked the books he needed to bring. He put them in his backpack, which suddenly felt heavy.
He resumed reading, occasionally flipping through some pages, eagerly awaiting Will's Iris message, and as he had thought, the air folded in on itself, revealing a window into the son of Apollo's room.
"Hi" Nico greeted.
"Hey!" Will replied, instinctively spreading his lips into a contagious smile. "How was the first day?" the boy asked, taking a seat. Nico shrugged, closing the book. "Normal, I think" he replied, briefly recounting what he had also told Hazel, mentioning those guys. Will couldn't help but let out a gentle laugh. "I've already told you, when you greet someone, you have to smile. Just like I do" he gave him a quick demonstration, still stretching his lips into a smile. Nico rolled his eyes, shaking his head, wanting to keep up the banter. "I swear, I tried. Smiles don't work even with me" he sighed theatrically.
"Then they must be blind, because you have a nice smile" he said, without any hint of joking. Will really meant it.
Nico was taken aback by that statement, then chuckled. "You must be blind too, it's not true that I have a nice smile" he replied.
"I like it" he said seriously. Once again, Nico fell silent.
"I like yours too" he murmured, trying not to lower his gaze due to embarrassment. Will smiled gently at him. "Thank you"
They remained silent for a few moments, with Will occasionally parting his lips as if to say something and then closing them as he reconsidered. It was Nico who broke the awkwardness, clearing his throat first.
"So—" he said. "Will I ever get to know what you wanted to tell me?" he asked, with a slight smile. Will's lips trembled a bit, he had been pondering it all day, even discussing it with his mother, whom he couldn't hide anything from. She had advised him to tell Nico, just like his half-siblings from Cabin Seven.
The boy took a long sigh, reorganizing his thoughts. Nico stared at him, patiently waiting to hear what he wanted to say that night, when they had accidentally held hands.
Will met his gaze, his heart beating loudly in his chest. He was convinced it would eventually burst out of his chest. "Well—" he began, stuttering a bit. "The thing, Nico, is that I—well, in a way, I admire you" he said, cursing himself for being so cowardly, but he couldn't bring himself to tell him the truth, not there, not in that barbaric way. He would tell him one day, for sure, but he would do it with the real Nico, not with a projection of himself that couldn't even touch.
Nico looked at him, slowly lowering his shoulders and slightly parting his lips as if to utter a weak "oh". A part of him was disappointed to hear this, he had hoped Will would say something else, something he had thought and hoped for all day. It seemed he had been so wrong.
The two talked a bit more before Nico asked to end the conversation, saying he was tired and that the next day would be a very heavy one. It wasn't entirely false, but he couldn't bear another moment looking at those blue irises, not now that he was sure Will considered him only a good friend.
"Shall we talk tomorrow?" he asked before ending the conversation. Nico didn't respond; at that moment, he wasn't sure if he wanted to spend another night talking to Will, who "admired" him only. "Maybe" he replied vaguely, his gaze now lowered and his eyes slightly stinging. "Will you call me?" he asked, extending his gaze in an attempt to see those dark eyes again, which he knew didn't only contain sadness but also joy.
Nico simply nodded. "Goodnight, Solace" he said, trying to sound stronger than he actually was.
"Goodnight, Nico" the boy replied, his voice sounding more subdued, he should have told him what he really thought.
The son of Hades looked away, quickly passing a hand over that steam-made window, thus wiping out the light from his room.

On ptrn my solangelo fanfiction is about to come to end ~ yay !!
I'm really unsure whether to translate the second fanfiction I wrote—it's quite intense, focusing on Jason and *those of you who have read the books know what* and honestly, my enthusiasm for translating things I wrote when I was eighteen is waning a bit ahah it's fun to take a trip down memory lane, but it's also tiring.
If enough people enjoy this fanfiction, then I might consider translating the other one too
Thanks everyone for reading it, tho. It truly makes me happy that such fanfiction can still entertain people 🫶
