I was almost ready to comment on how this series is using single-word episode titles, just like "Smallville" did, but now we've got this mouthful playing on a book that was roughly contemporary with that show. It's pretty clunky, but whatever.

It's nice that this episode gave us a break from the Luthor story, choosing instead to focus on Lois's investigation and some good character moments for the Kents and Lana's family. The mantra that "life is simpler in Smallville" gets an explicit repudiation, some fences are mended, and some new mysterious antagonists are introduced.

Spoilers ahoy!

If not for the enormous amount of COVID-imposed lead time this series had, and the amount of time it takes to write and record and add special effects to a live-action TV show, this episode would feel like a course correction for a lot of the problems I've had with the last couple of installments.

I'm writing this a little longer after watching the episode than I typically have, so I'm going to go plot-by-plot rather than chronologically through the episode.

Painting the House: a cute scene, and a good way to remind us that, even with all the drama and the teen angst, the Kents are a loving family.

Jonathan & Jordan: Jordan joining the football team is a neat plot point that goes in unexpected directions, given how that kind of thing has typically played out in Superman stories. I like the way that it sets up conflict with Jonathan in the beginning, but eventually he realizes that Jordan's not trying to take away the thing that makes him feel special. Jonathan being the one to convince Clark to let Jordan play—and making the case that Jordan's abilities just even the playing field with respect to his size—is a good moment of solidarity and understanding for him.

And Jordan, for his part, really does seem like he's found what he needed. Being able to take out some aggression on the football field—and having Clark's support—ends up being the key to getting a handle on his anger and being able to solve some problems with kindness rather than sulking and violence. I also appreciate that at least one of our initial antagonists—Sean—has moved out of that role, at least for now.

Coach Clark: There have been lots of attempts over the years to saddle Superman with various character flaws, but I think the one that fits best is being overprotective. On the macro scale, you get "Must There Be a Superman" and "King of the World," and on a micro scale you get stuff like this, being a bit of a helicopter parent and nearly losing Lois early in their relationship by eavesdropping. It rings true in a way that other attempted flaws—being dull-witted or indecisive—haven't. So it's nice here to see him realize it and acknowledge his mistakes, and to realize that he doesn't have to make the same choices his father did in order to keep his kids safe. After all, Jonathan Kent I didn't have superpowers. It'll also be nice for Clark to have a place to be earnest, mild-mannered Clark Kent, since he's outside the Daily Planet environment.

Lana and Sarah: Somewhere in my drafts I have a post about poor Lana Lang, a character made to fill a niche—the Lois Lane analogue for Superboy—and has never had much of a life outside of that niche. Every time Lana is introduced into adult Clark's life, she has a different deal. She's a TV reporter with a British accent, she's married to Pete Ross, she's a successful engineer, but she's almost always the girl whose life fell to pieces in one way or another after Clark Kent left. It's not fair to either character—Clark's presence in a person's life should elevate them, not devastate them—and while I understand the reason for giving her a failing marriage and conflicts with her children, I do want to see Lana have a happy ending in some adaptation or incarnation.

Anyway, I like Sarah as a character, and it's interesting to see how her story parallel's Jordan's, with her mother's overbearing overprotectiveness leading to conflict. It creates a contrast between how Clark and Lana are handling their respective teenage offspring, and gives them a nice bonding moment. It's easy to see how these bonding moments could turn into Lana trying to rekindle the old flame with Clark, and I really hope that doesn't happen, but platonic male-female friendships are rare enough on TV that I can imagine it's hard to set one up without everyone seeing a ship setting sail.

Speaking of ships, I know that Jordan and Sarah are an obvious pairing, but I hope Jordan is smart enough not to try to be her rebound relationship (and ruin his reconciliation with Sean). But honestly, I kind of hope Jordan is gay or bi, giving a way to tie his feelings of being different and search for identity to the struggles queer kids commonly face in an explicit way rather than an allegorical one.

Seriously though, let Clark and Lois have a strong marriage that doesn't need to be threatened by the Other Woman for unnecessary drama. Let the drama build out of normal family conflicts, not tropes that were sexist and outdated when they were common in the Silver Age.

Lois's Story: "The news comes to Lois Lane" seems to be an ongoing theme, as the next lead in her story just walks through the door of the Smallville Gazette. Unsurprisingly for a story involving Lois Lane, this leads to a conspiracy involving disappearing workers and super-powered enforcers. Lois explicitly makes the point I said earlier, that the stories in small towns do matter, and too often get overlooked because there aren't enough reporters covering them.

The action scene where Lois is attacked by someone with Kryptonian-level abilities is pretty good. I always like when Superman enters a confrontation by trying to de-escalate before fighting, and I always like when Lois enters a confrontation by trying to fight before calling in the big guns. The fight between Superman and the assailant (who I think is credited as Subjekt 11, but I assumed that character was going to carry forward and, uh, doesn't look like he is) showcases both a nice escalation as Superman learns what the guy's strength is, and some nice uses of powers. The CW effects teams have gotten pretty creative over the years. The one issue I have is that Superman slams the guy through a cinderblock wall right at the start of the fight, before he's tested those abilities, and I feel like that would have done some real damage if he'd guessed wrong and the guy was a baseline human. The No-Prize Answer would be that either he scanned the guy before hitting him and knew, at baseline, that he was a meta, or that he knew Lois wouldn't call him unless she was dealing with a metahuman threat. Still, it bugs me.

I do hope we learn more about what Subjekt-11 was. Metahuman? Kryptonian? Some kind of experiment? I'm frankly more interested in the Morgan Edge stuff than alt-universe Luthor.

The woman who takes out Subjekt-11—who I guess was also with Edge at the meeting last episode—seems to be named Leslie Larr, no doubt a reference to Lesla-Lar, the Silver Age Kandorian villain who happened to be an exact double for Supergirl, because every major character had a double living in Kandor. Whether that means she's Kryptonian or some other swerve is something, I guess, we'll learn later.

Other: I noticed an Easter Egg that I haven't seen reported anywhere else: The Whitty Banter Show! For those who don't remember, Whitty Banter was the host of a Metropolis talk show in the 80s and 90s; there's ads for it all over the Death of Superman Newstime issue. In trying to remind myself what Easter Egg I remembered catching, I also learned that Kryptonsite still exists! What a blast from the past. There was a time, many moons ago, where that was a daily visit for me, along with the Superman Homepage.

And Blogger.com, for that matter. But those days are clearly far behind us.

When you are still talking about a show you are too old for..

warning: it’s loooong (TL;DR section at the bottom)

Just to be clear I have no intention to look into and review any more Winx Club related content and it’s not just because the current environment is not conducive to this kind of endeavor. After I finished paying off my debts I considered getting back to this but eventually decided against it because some of my thoughts regarding this show have changed a little and I overall no longer see the point. One of the things I wanted to accomplish when I first started was to figure out why this show never appealed to me when it first came out on the FoxBox and well, the answer was very simple if not ridiculously obvious. This show was not made for me.

I was a few months short of 13 when the show premiered in the US and had just enough experience in the genre to have expectations, and this was the problem. When western magical girl series started to show up in the early 2000s, I expected shows that improved upon the standards and cliches left by the likes of Sailor Moon and its genre contemporaries, not just in terms of visuals but writing as well. Winx Club however, seemed more in line with the type of cartoons that (since the 80s) popped up every now and then as promotional material for emerging lines of fashion dolls generally targeting younger girls, with the only difference being that it had a progressive story-line. Even if you argue that Winx Club was not so merchandise-driven in its first seasons, contemporary fashion and aesthetics had always been the selling point. By then, shows that prioritized visual appeal over writing and seemed to exists primarily as toy commercials, were starting to lose my interest. I was also getting tired of certain staples like romantic relationships being bland but senselessly overemphasized and characters (specially protagonists) being archetypes with little to no complexity.

As an adult, I since looked back at shows of similar quality/target audience and I have surprisingly been able to find joy within them leading me to another conclusion. It’s not that I am too old and weary to appreciate animated media aimed at young girls. It’s more likely that Winx Club is a sore spot for me because it is the show that made me realize (if subconsciously) that networks in charge of delivering animated media to mainstream television were no longer invested in appealing to me. As a non-white, lower-middle class girl who was never all that into relationship-melodrama I felt that most cartoons of my day didn’t really catered to my interest and I think I saw the rise of Winx Club as a bitter indication that even the animated genres that I liked or tolerated would eventually become completely inaccessible to me.

I had some trouble finding out what the target audience bracket was for the first season. From what I eventually gathered it is either 4-8 or 5-10, although apparently concept-wise the show was intended for a slightly older age group. I give more credence to the first bracket because honestly I think this show works best as baby’s first magical girl series. The less experience you have in the genre, the less fed-up with tropes and the less expectations you have going in, the better.

Lets just make a thing clear. There is no such thing as being too old to watch cartoons. An art medium is not inherently tied to an age group. Unfortunately, everything is at the mercy of capitalism, specially art produced for entertainment. There is a lot of stupidity and outdated ideas governing how mainstream shows are made and to whom they are made for. Industries don’t like to take chances and they are reluctant to change in accordance to society unless an increased in profits can be assured to some degree…

Look, look! I swear I was just going to post a simple paragraph-long note to whoever cared, stating I was not going to continue reviewing Winx Club even though I am no longer in debt. But, I made the HUGE mistake of looking at the Wikipedia page, specifically the part where they quoted show creator Iginio Straffi defending the controversial choices made for season 8, and here I am, annoyed and rambling. To paraphrase, he claims kids around 10 years and older just don’t watch cartoons as much as they used to (sure, Jan) and they just had to retooled their show for a younger demographic and that just means it cannot be as complex as it used to be. Yes, complex is a word he ascribed to the earlier Winx Club content (level of complexity to be clear). I rolled my eyes, I died a little inside and overall I also decided, among other things, to never read another Iginio Straffi interview ever again.

In an effort to wash away this BS and exorcise some demons let me throw here some of my still lingering unwarranted Winx Club thoughts in no particular sequence before this platform collapses any further:

Winx Club is one of if not the longest running western magical girl group series and its success is likely attributed to the fact that back when it premiered in the US, it was the only accessible and visually appealing series to come out of the genre since the beginning of the millennium. It practically had a monopoly of its intended audience. In my neck of the woods, it was available without the need of a cable/satellite subscription. In contrast, Dinsey-owned W.I.T.C.H. didn’t have that same accessibility and I don’t think I even need to bring up anime in general. The one other magical girl show from around the same time that I remembered coming across in syndicated broadcast was Trollz, and well you look that up and tell me how much staying power that looked like it had.

If the show has struggled in recent years is of course NOT because older kids don’t watch cartoons nowadays. Rather I think the show runners are not quite grasping how the circumstances surrounding their target audience have changed since the early 2000s. There are a lot more options out there in terms of entertainment even if you narrow things down to only western magical girl cartoons, not to mention that Winx club no longer has an edge on accessibility. I also think we consume media faster and that along with all the new options of entertainment means we have less head space to dedicate to one single show. Putting a new coat of paint to the newer seasons is simply not enough to remain relevant.

Adding to the above, It’s been well over ten years since the show first premiered. I don’t have data to prove this, but I am willing to bet that a sizable chunk of viewers were there from the beginning or joined at the start of the Nickelodeon era. It makes little sense for changes in writing to include hacking its continuity, rewriting established lore and deleting whatever meager character development they ever had. Maybe it’s not a good idea to turn your show with progressive storytelling including aging characters, into a cash cow you intend to milk for as long as you can and beyond. Maybe they should have given the early seasons a proper conclusion and laid the groundwork for new groups of characters to lead fresh series within the same universe...or you know, a full reboot.

I am not saying that the show should suddenly conform to my tastes (though that would be nice) after all it was not made for me. I just think that people that stuck with it deserve more than what they have been getting. I saw some positive feedback with regards to World of Winx but from what little I saw I don’t think it was good enough to be the series for older fans. Tone might be slightly different but writing-wise it feels more or less the same as the current series. The attempts at humor are still not landing for me at least. Also, how old does Straffi thinks the older fans are? 10? Who knows, maybe season 8 did its job in drawing-in the next gen, and maybe the planned live action series will be all that the older fans have been asking for. I do wish them the best.

Regarding things that I changed my mind about (though only a little bit)...In more than one occasion I referred to Bloom as a mary sue and this has been digging at me. Either the term has become toxic and too often unfairly assigned to any female character in a leading position, or it was always an improper way to discuss mediocre writing. There are main characters that are created in part to serve as vehicles of indulgence for its intended audience. I don’t think these these type of characters need to be complex to be successful or serviceable but I do think relatability and/or likability are indicators of whether or not a specific indulgent protagonist is effective. I didn’t find Bloom to be effective but she seems to be popular enough with the younger range of fans and that’s what matters. All I am saying is that Bloom could have easily been better and all it would have taken was for the writers to slightly lower the pedestal they put her on. Otherwise, they should have just stuck with the Magical Bloom title so no one would have delusions that the show would ever focus on anyone else.

I stand by most of my other major criticisms of the series. Though I admit that when I was looking at each episode I would spend an unreasonable amount of time on small things or personal pet peeves.I maintain however that to whom a show is intended for should not be a determinant of quality and there are things worth discussing even if one is not within the age-range of said audience. However, it’s not hard to tell what Winx Club is mostly about; it’s romance-centered. If you are not all that invested on that sort of stuff or you don’t like what the show is offering, then there is little point in sticking around because you are just going to get more and more caught-up on the flaws. The fantasy world elements while ambitious in scope are not well developed and consistency is an issue since the beginning that only gets worse as the series goes on. Unless you can subsist solely on the aesthetics and merch-friendly elements, I wouldn’t bother beyond the first movie.

If Winx Club had been the definitive blue print shaping the future of western magical girls shows, I would probably feel justified in making this much of a fuss. However, pretty much any other show I have seen after the fact has been a deviation and an improvement. I believe that’s because more content creators that grew up with the genre (and understood the many ways it could be improved) are finding opportunities to bring their appreciation for it into the mainstream. It’s pointless for me to still complain about the older stuff. Heck, I can even find good things to say about Angel’s Friends and this is definitely a cartoon that was shaped by the success of the fairy school show.

Winx Club is fine, it has as much right to exist as any other piece of mindless entertainment aimed at any demographic. And that’s that.

TL;DR

I am not reviewing Winx Club stuff anymore. I just had a lot of thoughts that were brought up by an annoying Iginio Straffi quote I saw on the Wiki page while I was working on that last post. Extended rambling is what I apparently do when I am mildly upset. I barfed all this out in the hopes that I won’t think about this show again anytime soon.

If morbid curiosity gets the better of me, I might give future Winx Club content a watch. I just won’t post about it because it seems I am incapable of finding joy in it.

No, I don’t take criticisms of the bad spelling/grammar of my ramblings. Let this mess be. This is also not a place for debate, the only discourse I welcome here is whether or not relatability is a word. Online dictionaries say it’s fine but my word processor says it is not a thing. Discuss! (JK)

Advantages:

1. It’s green:

Virtual exhibition eliminate the transport of artifacts and materials, which could reduce the carbon footprint of an event and also save big money for other good use.

2. It’s time-saving and long-lasting:

Virtual exhibition not only allow visitors to save time on travel, many also keep the virtual space for a long time after the actual event as a long-term display platform.

3. It’s available for more visitors:

Digital strategy includes virtual tours to allow rural, interstate and international audiences to the exhibitions without regional restriction. Besides, since a virtual space has no boarder it could contain more guests as long as the server is stable

4.It’s easier to track visitors’ interest:

Digital platforms make it easy to record users’ data and provide the museum an overall assessment.

Disadvantages:

1. It’s not exactly exciting:

With virtual exhibition, the audience doesn’t have all the excitement that goes along with a live event, so they’re not necessarily as engaged. The point is the curator has to work harder to catch the attention of attendees because they are not immersed in an atmosphere of enthusiasm and excitement as they are in a real space.

2. It’s technically vulnerable:

Virtual display may meet a lots of problems such as trouble connecting at the time of the show and page crash when overloading too many users…The museum needs to hire extra professional computer engineers to manage the online platform.

3. It’s relatively distracting:

When we’re attending an event in person, there is not many things to distract you. However, when we are visiting a museum online, it’s easier to get distracted by the web ads or other messages.

4. It’s not friendly to those who can’t afford a laptop:

1.THE SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM:

Advantages:

Rich Collections: Featuring over 1,700 artworks by more than 625 artists, the Collection Online presents a searchable database of selected artworks from the Guggenheim’s permanent collection of approximately 8,000 artworks. The selection reflects the breadth, diversity, and tenor of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s extensive holdings from the late 19th century through the present day.

Detailed Searching Categories: The search engine is perfect and the visitors could easily find their favorite artworks divided by by artist, date, medium, movement, and venue.

Disadvantages:

The online exhibition is only pictures with text description, and it is very difficult for visitors to immerse themselves in the virtual space since there is no where for them to explore. Personally, it makes me feel more like doing research or going through beautiful pictures rather than visiting a museum. Besides, the only medium is photography. There is no extra video, 3d maps or audio and to be honest it’s a little boring.

2.THE LOUVRE:

Advantages:

The excellent 3 dimensional map allows all online visitors to feel like they really engage in the collections since everybody could talk a virtual walk at the real museum.

Disadvantages:

Poor web design: The visual effect of the website looks very outdated, like it was designed in the last century. On the contrary, GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM’s website is very clear, stylish and modern. Plus, the interface of the searching page is also a little bit unfriendly. There are only few categories and they are not that specific.

Lack of description: Although the 3d immersed map is very engaging and the viewer could click and zoom artifacts during the tour, there is no explanation of the displays when you click the work. It’s a single picture with no artist’s name and necessary information. It’s hard to leave an impression by just display a photo since the audience could not understand the purpose and the worldview behind it.

3.NASA:

Advantages:

Vivid combination of text, picture and video provide the viewers with a relatively comprehensive understanding and it’s more interesting and attractive than boring text description.

Handy: The Space Center Houston also has an app that provides virtual tours, augmented reality experiences, and videos and audio stories about space exploration.

Disadvantages: Their web pages is loading at a very slow speed and occasionally suffer from freezing, which greatly affects the user experience. People usually browse the web very quickly, and an unsmooth experience will make the visitors impatient and less concentrated.

4.The Palace Museum:

Assistance functions:

Advantages:

The online Palace Museum provides its visitors almost the best visiting experience they could achieve based on high technological support. Although it shares a similar 3d map with the LOUVRE, it has more assistant options to help their audience to engage in the collections, which include VR mode, full screen mode, automatic rotation (so that the visitors could follow the lead and won’t get lost ), related background music and detailed floor map.

Personally I like to hear matching background music when visiting the exhibition since it could help me relax and provoke some emotional feelings. So I’m very glad to find out that the curators of the Palace Museum considered that part and set a button so that those who prefer a quiet visiting time could also close the music and enjoy their time.

The rotation speed of the map is a bit fast, which can easily cause 3d dizziness.

Although the audiences can zoom in to view the introduction of exhibits, they cannot click on the specific artifact. Some paintings are in a really huge scale and it’s difficult for the audience to see the overall appearance of the work.

I think it’s better to combine the advantages of the Louvre with the Palace Museum that the viewer can not only zoom in to view the pictures, but also see the relevant notes.

(3) Reading Reflection：

In Rodney’s opinion, it’s very different to appreciate the artifacts through its actual presence from experiencing it through the mediation of a screen (unless on purpose). Setting up in the physical environment, the audiences are more able to measure their own body against a display. The artwork could either remind them of some remarkable memories or some unforgettable experiences. Therefore, by occupying the same space and time, the visitors could create some special connection and meaningful memories with the displays and other viewers. In short, seeing art through screen does not allow the viewer to take his own measure and do no benefits for building up intimate relations to make visitors more engaged.

Ask questions of the work:

-The theme/purpose of the exhibition:

What is happening here? If the viewer could not find the answer during their visiting, it’s hard to provoke their further interest to investigate the artifacts. We need to communicate with them, to make ourselves present to the art even as it is present with us the moment we make visual contact.

“How did this come about? What kind of care had to be taken to make this thing? How long did this take and what else besides physical labor did it require of the maker?”

2. Imagine the worldview that brought the work about.

Each piece of work represents a world, however, not all of them have physical meanings. Thus, we should wonder about the author’s perspective as evidenced by the work. Is it ironic, celebratory, political or aspirational..etc. I think it’s significant for both the viewer and the creator to think about

whether or not they can live in the imaginary world. Are they welcomed? Who can live here and how can they thrive?

3. Look at yourself and ask what the work is calling up in you

A good artwork is in a conversation with the viewers and could provoke something. What specific emotional response is being called up and where did it come from? If you show some resistance in the interchange with a work of art and why?

4. Recognize the work’s agency

It’s highest respect to recognize that an artwork has its own entity rather than coextending with the author because it exceeds the artist’s hand and mind precisely when it comes into being in a different way for each viewer.

I really love what Rodney said that “Each work of art is like a clock that a watchmaker has given a ticking heart to and then let it go out to beat and beat and take breath and say with its own voice why it needs to be here with us now. ” A mature artifact has its own life and we should let it go when it’s been finished. However, before completing the last step, we need to question ourselves about its theme/purpose, its worldview and conversation like the essay discussed before.

10 Things Every HR Professional Needs to Do to Succeed

10. Have a vision.

Know what you want to accomplish—and why. Don’t wait for your organization to define what HR should be. There are lots of examples available and a little research will orient you to the range of the options available. Make it your business to know what’s possible. Study everything you can find and network with others to become your own expert. If you’re being interviewed, articulate your goals. If you’re already working, outline them every chance you get. Discuss your ideas with your leadership team to get their input and buy-in.

My vision at Wynn Resorts was to develop a culture where people would want to work and stay. The results included attracting more than 3 million job applicants for the 125,000 openings we filled over 20 years; an annualized 11 percent turnover rate during that time; no grievances or arbitrations filed (50 percent union, 50 percent nonunion); and being named as one of America’s most admired workplaces.

9. Be a strategic thinker.

Every top organization needs HR leaders who align with the company’s goals by learning what those goals are and supporting them. At Wynn, we wanted HR to be more than a department. That meant employees at every level knew and understood their part in supporting our culture and HR philosophies.

For example, the company wanted a lean and empowered team, so we designed HR tools that managers and employees could use to enter and retrieve their own HR-related transactions and information. We taught them how to use them and monitored their utilization and effectiveness. Having these self-service tools allowed the HR team to become strategic partners rather than transactional clerks.

8.Become a great communicator.

Steve Wynn taught us that the difference between a good professional and a great leader is the ability to communicate. You’re the voice of your organization’s culture, so work to fill that role using the following tactics:

Adapt the style of a speaker you admire. Practice aloud, and then stand up at every employee gathering and report on the good stuff your HR team is doing.

Use your skills to help others communicate more effectively in meetings, at company and community events, and in new-hire orientations.

Start or attend Toastmasters meetings; a little bit of this kind of training goes a long way in making you a commanding speaker.

7. Become tech-savvy.

I believe in using technology to improve the processes and effectiveness of HR. The problem was that I didn’t used to know enough to articulate my ideas or participate in discussions. So I took courses that helped me better understand the terminology and methodology (local community colleges offer these regularly, and today those are supplemented by workshops and online courses). I’m never the smartest guy in any room, but by educating myself I was able to accomplish a wide range of IT goals, including the implementation of great human resource information systems and applicant tracking systems in partnership with vendors we trusted.

6. Be flexible.

First, be curious enough to discover what you don’t know. It’s easy to do the stuff we are comfortable doing, but you need to learn about the new stuff that’s happening as a result of the pace and volume of change throughout your industry and profession. Allocate time both online and through networking to uncover new issues and the best practices others suggest to deal with them. Consider sponsoring business and industry group meetings at your company site to allow your staff to interact with others.

Second, try new things. The world’s changing and the static policies you’ve used in the past often need updating. How many of us have handbooks that contain “at will” language?
