lmao so asmo got banned from peru (and probably greece after the incident with helen BUT that’s water under the bridge) and levi got banned from japan for being too cringe-fail (the americans are already enough, NO MORE) but what about the others?

i feel like beel got banned from ireland after causing the great potato famine and from italy after eating all the pasta in the entire country once…

mammon got banned from vegas FOR SURE for causing a scene (not a country BUT he’s been banned from every casino in the US, and steadily working his way through canada and europe (starting with england) he’s making progress…

lucifer got banned from italy also for the vatican city incident. he wanted to see it cause he’d heard so much about it. no one is allowed to talk about it…but the brothers will tell you about it later if you want to know.

belphie and diavolo got banned from all of africa because due to a mix up they got blamed for spreading the sleeping sickness and malaria respectively (they didn’t actually do it but can’t seem to escape the allegations)

i think solomon got banned from mexico and all of south america and is the cause behind a lot of the superstitions based on devils/the occult there. people run from him in fear. he claims to not know why but you know there’s a reason. you can try to ask someone but they’re all too busy fleeing in terror.

barbatos claims he got banned from russia and china. no one knows why, not even diavolo. it’s one of the mysteries that he’s very secretive about, but legend has it that it’s related to something he did before he joined forces with diavolo.

i also think asmo got banned from india and some regions of france as well as various other european countries like spain and scotland but the stories behind those pretty much revolve around a party, drinking, and members of nobility. and they’re usually so long and crazy and asmo is always insistent he did nothing wrong and will leave out parts of the story to make himself sound good BUT if you’re a real history buff you can usually sus out what actually happened. or get him drunk. he always has loose lips when he drinks.

satan got banned from the americas (specifically north america) due to his rebellious streak/temper tantrum days resulting in the satanic panic. mostly caused by americans being rude and making him angry. he’s also a basis for a lot of mexico/south american superstition, though somehow…not as much as solomon?

I definitely think they all have the potential to get banned for causing specific issues. Definitely Beel eating all of everything, Mammon causing trouble at casinos, and Asmo just getting drunk and partying too much.

I also think Mammon would be banned for doing something like insurance fraud. I don't know why but that just seems like something he'd get himself into. Or maybe it turns out he's the mastermind behind all the internet email scams asking you to send them thousands of dollars.

I think Lucifer has to be extra careful because uh... he's Lucifer. You would think he'd be banned from the Vatican before he ever even showed up there. Satan, too. Just stay away from religious locations when the religion in question considers you to be the source of evil, okay?? Though I would absolutely demand the story from the other brothers about the incident lol.

Okay see I headcanon Solomon spent a significant amount of time in the southwestern US just because he's always wearing that bolo tie lol. So I love the idea that he was also in Mexico and South America, just being the menace he always is. In the Devildom, the stuff he does isn't too weird, but can you imagine normal people in the human world encountering him and all his weird experiments? And if he was actually covered in pacts marks that look like demonic sigils? I have no doubt that he would be the source of years worth of superstitions.

I LOVE all ideas where Satan is the cause of any kind of Satantic activity anywhere. Like the Satanic panic was so ridiculous, but I love the idea of him causing it just by being angry about rude people.

I do think Satan could also have been banned from Japan - most specifically, Tashirojima where the cat population far surpasses that of the human one. Possibly also Hydra Island in Greece, which is another island known for its high cat population. I just think eventually they'd be like listen we appreciate how much you love the cats, but you need to leave now lol.

All of this seems more than enough to get any of them banned from the various human world locations they've caused trouble in. It's so funny to think about them running rampant in the human world. Lucifer out here probably acting like he'd never get banned, but he's caused his fair amount of problems, too.

Episode 4- Hieronymus Bosch's St. John in the Wilderness

Welcome to Long Live Bat Art, the podcast for art lovers who don’t see art as much as they want to. My name is Sydney and thank you for taking this slow tour through an art gallery with a casual art lover. Today, I’ll be talking about St. John in the Wilderness by Hieronymus Bosch. I hope you enjoy.

Hieronymus Bosch is actually a pseudonym for Jheronimus van Aeken, but I’ll continue to call him Bosch. He was born around 1450 in the town of ‘s Hertogenbosch- which was probably where he got his pseudonym- in Brabant, now part of the Netherlands. His grandfather Johannes Thomaszoon van Aeken, or maybe Jan van Aeken, was also a painter who had five sons, four of which became painters as well. Because of Johannes’ career, his children and grandchildren had lives that were fairly comfortable.

Bosch’s father, Anthonius, was a painter who acted as an artistic advisor for the Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Blessed Lady, which was a volunteer group that promoted the veneration of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God. In 1486 or 1487, Bosch himself joined the brotherhood where he did some of his earliest commissions, but sadly none survive. It’s logical that either Bosch’s father or uncles taught him to paint, but unfortunately it’s unclear because none of his family’s works lasted to the present.

Bosch was a pessimist and strict moralist. Most of his paintings reflect both that and his general misanthropy and distrust of the nature of humanity. Most of his works also had a moral attached to them, but most of the precise messages have been lost because of time and the changing of morals and images throughout time. Nowadays, he’s been lauded as having deep insight into humanity’s desires and fears that were shown in his work. While that may be true, negativity isn’t the only reason to make art or the lens through which to see it. Positivity can have depth too, sometimes more than negative.

Between 1479 and 1481, Bosch married his wife Aleyt Goyaerts van den Meerveen. Bosch gained social status and more wealth because of the marriage. It was after this that Bosch had enough capital to start a workshop.

Critics of his time thought he must have been involved with the occult, but researchers now just think he was one of the first to use abstraction to represent ideas. In fact, researchers have tended to disagree vehemently about the thought process behind Bosch’s work over the centuries. Some say that his work is typical of the conservatism of the time, some say that the work was created only to amuse the audience, some say he created monstrous forms just for the Hell of it. Whatever camp of interpretation you fall under, there’s one thing that’s clear- Bosch has survived in the art world for a reason. And that reason is debate.

In addition to his other works, Bosch also did altarpieces and designed stained glass. But art historians have been able to track his evolution as an artist fairly successfully- as one might expect, his works when he was a beginner show a hesitancy and awkwardness that gets less and less pronounced as he worked. His style also cemented itself as he developed. His work has been split into three categories- early, middle, and late period.

It was apparently popular at the time to imitate his style and/or subject matter, as I detailed last episode with Pieter Bruegel the Elder who was one of his most loyal and well-known followers. But because his style was so unique, few were successful in reproducing it exactly. Unlike most Flemish painters at the time, Bosch sometimes didn’t hide his brushstrokes- instead, he showcased them with his sketchy style.

Unusual during most artists’ lifetimes, Bosch was fairly renowned- his work was collected in the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain. His depictions of Hell were especially popular.

While around 40 artworks have been attributed to Bosch, he signed only seven and dated none of them. Most of his works are on wood panels in oil paint and most of his more famous ones are triptychs, which are pieces of work on wood that have been joined together with hinges and can be folded up as needed.

Bosch died in 1516. After his death, in the late 1500s, Phillip the Second of Spain actually got his hands on most of Bosch’s paintings. And as one might expect from looking at the imagery in his work, the Surrealists in the 1920s- including Dalí- drew inspiration from and otherwise admired his work.

Now, for those of you not well-versed in the Bible, you might be confused as to why a man would choose to live in the wilderness. St. John the Baptist lived in the wilderness for the same reason monks live in monasteries and nuns in convents away from everyone else. St. John believed that civilization is where sin is plentiful, and the wilderness is where you should go to connect with God. St. John believed, as people have throughout history, that to commune with God you should be alone. Now, onto the painting.

The painting is realistic with surrealist or abstracted elements. St. John is lying on the ground behind a surrealist plant. The lower half of his body is lying on the grassy ground with his torso, arms, and head resting on a raised area. It looks like a mini grassy cliff, or maybe a natural altar.

St. John is wearing a loose faded red clothing item, the cloth pooled around him with a single foot exposed. The folds are geometric but shaded. St. John himself has a long, scraggly brown beard and hair of the same texture and color. His left elbow is against that natural altar and he’s supporting his head on that hand. He looks morose. He’s trailing the forefinger of his right hand along the natural altar like he’s drawing something.

The surrealist plant that I mentioned that’s in front of St. John- it’s green, with a wide stem at the bottom that tapers as it goes upwards. The single fruit is large and round, and white in color. It looks like marble- it has blue-toned veins running through it. There’s a small bird that’s perched on part of the plant and eating the seeds. The plant’s leaves are large and flat. The stem that leads to the fruit or flower is curved and thorny, with the exception of the part the bird is perched on. Quite convenient. There’s a fallen fruit that’s on the altar, its pod facing away from St. John with its seeds spilling out. The top of the plant above the round fruit is thinner, with a flat disk growing around it. Imagine a straw sticking out of the hole of a cup's top. At the top, the stem splits into two. The right fork has a smaller gray fruit with white speckles and a black bird perched on it. Not a crow or raven, it’s very small. The left fork ends in a sharp bend that tapers into a soft curve. What looks like pink leaves or maybe a large upside down butterfly is hanging from the curve. The front of the altar has exposed dirt with white roots coming out. There’s a lamb laying in front of it, its legs folded underneath itself. The trees to the right of the image- they have straight and skinny trunks with the leaves suggested by dark green highlighted at the tips with a lighter shade. As they recede into the distance, they get more yellow and less green. There are several animals in the yellowing grass in the distance. A few antelope, a boar, and a couple of bears, one scratching its back against a tree.

The mountains in the background are blue-toned and rounded. The mountain slightly closer is again, surreal. It’s pale, and I can see what looks like a rabbit on its hind legs in the face, hugging another figure. But I can’t quite figure out what I think the second one is.

More trees in the same style at the top of Rabbit Mountain. To the right, just behind the dark green trees, is a large dead tree. It has a large bulb on the right side of it, like a massive wasp’s nest. Birds are flying behind the tree in a line, not a ‘v.’

Now for my thoughts.

I never really ‘got’ surrealism or abstract art. Mixed with realism, it’s even odder. But I like it in this case- mixes the mundane with the strange. And the trees are a mix of realistic and a touch of abstraction because leaves don’t look like that. As I mentioned, St. John looks morose. Or maybe he’s just bored, who knows. I know I would be if I lived alone with no one around to talk to or connect with.

As far as the religious aspect of the painting, I feel a strong connection with it. I don’t live in the wilderness- as you might expect because I run a podcast- and I don’t eat locusts or wear animal fur, but I do believe faith should be private. That’s not saying you shouldn’t tell people what you believe, but I mean that you shouldn’t try to shove religion down anyone’s throat. I don’t believe in missionary trips, I don’t believe in going door to door and telling people about your God, or TV preaching where you ask for donations.

I remember seeing some TV show or movie or other thing and a character saying to another that he ‘prays too loud.’ And I really do believe that one can do that. There are people that only believe in their God in theory and don’t fully understand the teachings. I can only speak for Roman Catholics because that’s the religion I know the best, but even Catholics can learn a few things from the person they claim to know so well. There are Catholics who say that God hates this group or that group. But that’s the opposite of what God stands for. You can go and look through the entire Bible, but you won’t find any instance of God or Jesus saying ‘I don’t like these people, and they should be damned.’ And if you go and quote Leviticus at me, don’t bother. The Bible has been translated and changed through the thousands of years, by people who had their own agenda. Books have been added, books have been left out. Words that used to mean so much have been translated beyond understanding. There are whole concepts that don’t apply any more. And just to add, Leviticus also forbids wearing more than one kind of fabric and I don’t see any Catholic advocating for the damnation of anyone wearing a nice cotton blend. The main point of Jesus is that he loved. And not just anyone, but everyone. The man hung out with lepers, prostitutes, and tax collectors- the people on the fringes of society, the ones that were hated in their time.

Now, I’m not extremely religious, but I do believe in God. I don’t go to any particular place of worship regularly, though I might stop in from time to time. My faith is quiet and private, and I don’t pray the way people tend to, with flowery or carefully-recited words. But I do pray. And that act, that distinctly human act, brings me comfort.

And me saying that isn’t to bash atheists or people who don’t believe in much of anything. Quite the opposite. My thinking is that those people might be the best kind because there’s no belief in any reward for their doing good. There’s no grand prize of an afterlife of happiness. They’re just humans helping humans. Because they can. Because they want to. And that’s a pretty good way to live.

I’m going to challenge you. Help one other person today. You don’t have to solve world hunger or bring about world peace. One person. It could be your neighbor you don’t talk to besides to exchange hellos. Offer to set out their garbage cans for them next time. It could be your elderly family member. Ask to get together soon and just talk over a cup of coffee. Get at least one of their stories. It could be a complete stranger. It could be as simple as holding the door open for someone with a stroller or a lot of bags. It could be just paying someone a compliment- someone that there’s one feature that you know gets most of the attention in a negative way, like crooked eyes or buck teeth. Compliment something else about them. Help just one person. Because if everyone just forgets that they believe in a Higher Power, and instead takes it upon themselves to help at least one other person, then maybe we will solve world hunger or get world peace. Because little kindnesses are never little to the person who’s having it done for them. Maybe it’s been a really bad week for them and you gave them a nice surprise. Maybe they’ll then turn around and help someone else to share that fortune. Because that’s what kindness is- a fortune. It costs almost nothing and means everything.

Your thoughts on the Sims 1-4

Sims 1: I bought it when I was 13 yo because I wanted to see how it worked. I laughed so hard with the polygonal hands and feets. (Nothing to envy, Sims 4, lmao).

Sim 2: I think that it’s the most complete game. The expansions are so cool.

Sims 3: I started playing when I was 15 years old. I remember that I went to a Carrefour (a supermarket in Spain and France, maybe other countries, idk) and bought it for 5 euros. I played I played until four in the morning. I created myself and my ideal man (I didn’t know that I was bisexual in that time, what a good memory.) The next day I went to the supermarket to buy other expansions.

Sims 4: I like it, it’s true that it’s shit that we haven’t got a open world in this game. It’s the only thing that I don’t like because in the previous games it was so fun.

What is your favorite Expansion pack in the Sims 4? Jungle Adventure and Sulani. I love Sulani, srly. I live near the sea and my home place is more similar to Brindleton Bay but Sulani…I loved Island Living in the Sims 3 so…I LOVE THAT PARADISE VIBES.

Small pets or Horses? I prefer small pets.

What is your favorite active career in the Sims 4? Gardener, actor or painter.

What is your favorite Aspiration in the Sims 4? Painter extraordinaire or Renaissance Sim.

Whims or Wants? I think that it would be more fun if they added more wants, because it’s a good form to see how the Sims think.

What is your favorite Occult in the Sims 4? Vampires. ( I MISS WEREWOLVES I HAVE TO SAY IT).

Cowplants, Bonehilda, or the Social Bunny? Bonehilda is wonderful and beautiful.

How do you pick your sims names? I go to a page named behinthename.com and choose a random name.

Do you create a spouse for a sim, or do you go after a townie? It depends if I am with the energy to doing it or not.

Do you prefer to follow storytelling Simblrs, or do your prefer gameplay Simblrs? I like both. Builders and CC creators are nice too.

What year did you join Tumblr/Simblr? I joined Tumblr long time ago in 2011. Simblr I think it was in 2015 but I deleted my blog because I got bored or something like that

What is possibly the last pictures of John Lennon with Kyoko Chan Cox, Yoko Ono’s daughter from her second marriage with Tony Cox. This would’ve been April 1971 in Majorca, Spain.

After Yoko and Tony’s divorce, neither won sole custody. Yet Cox became increasingly reluctant to let Yoko and her new husband spend time with Kyoko, and finally refused to permit it at all. For a year before the Lennons came to America, they had been chasing Mr. Cox and Kyoko around Europe. In Majorca, Spain, the Lennons caught up with them and spirited Kyoko off to their hotel; but Mr. Cox called the police, and a Spanish court gave the child back to him. The incident added to his fear that the Lennons wanted to take her away from him for good. After their failed visit to Majorca, Yoko was awarded permanent custody by the United States Virgin Islands court. But, the legal battle would go on as Tony joined a religious cult known as The Walk and refused to reveal Kyoko’s location or allow Yoko and John to visit. Kyoko was also taught by Tony that she was rescued from her mother, who “was involved in drugs and the occult” and “stood for corruption”. Yoko and John continued searching for Kyoko for much of the 1970s. Kyoko wouldn’t reunite with her mother until 1998.

ONO: "I lost Kyoko when she was about five...”

PLAYBOY: "What happened when she was five?"

ONO: "John and I got together and I separated from my ex-husband." (Tony Cox) "He took Kyoko away. It became a case of parent kidnapping and we tried to get her back..."

LENNON: "...We chased him all over the world. God knows where he went. So if you're reading this, Tony, let's grow up about it. It's gone. We don't want to chase you anymore, because we've done enough damage... It was like we were after an escaped convict..."

ONO: "...She is totally frightened. There was a time in Spain when a lawyer and John thought that we should kidnap her."

LENNON: (sighing) "I was just going to commit hara-kiri first."

ONO: "And we did kidnap her and went to court. The court did a very sensible thing... the judge took her into a room and asked her which one of us she wanted to go with. Of course, she said Tony. We had scared her to death."

Verónica

So I'm going to preface this text post with a bit of a spoiler warning, as I will be going over the entirety of the movie's plot. Anyway, I first heard of "Verónica" via Facebook article that essentially hyped up the movie. For those of who haven't seen the article, it basically says it's so scary that people had to stop watching about halfway through the movie. So, of course, my friends, Anne and Gene, are pretty excited to see it. It is also mentioned elsewhere that the movie is supposedly based off of a true event that happened in Spain, so that adds to the horror element. Without further ado, let's get into it.

The movie is about a girl named Verónica that decides to play with a Ouija board with her friend Rosa. Rosa invites a girl named Diana to join them in their seance during an eclipse. Now, with a Ouija board, especially in the movies, when you're done and you want to leave, you have to say "good-bye". A cliche in horror movies that involve Ouija boards is that the characters in the movie never say "good-bye" and of course, some spooky shit goes on that ends up killing at least one of the characters. That's exactly what happens, thr Ouija board breaks, and Verónica gets possessed by a demon because why else? Diana runs to get help while Rosa stays with Verónica, who is whispering things, to which is later revealed to be saying "I will die on Saturday" or something along those lines. Verónica is taken to the nurse who passes it off as a possible blood pressure issue and that she should eat red meat for dinner that night. When school ends, Verónica meets her siblings and go to the bar where their mother works. Before going, Verónica makes the children swear not to tell their mother why she went to the nurse's office.

That night, during dinner, Verónica has some issues trying to eat, as she freezes her hand and begins to shake, inching closer to her mouth. When her sister drops a carton of milk on the floor and the milk spills over to her foot, she snaps out of a trance and spits out any food in her mouth, and continues as if nothing happened. When she attempts to fall asleep, she ends up having a nightmare where hands come out of her mattress, keeping her bound while a demon comes and attempts to sacrifice her. She wakes up after the nightmare to find her little brother, Antoñito, standing at the foot of her bed, saying he wet the bed that night. Realizing what time it is, she rushes to get her and her siblings ready for school that day where Rosa seems to be ignoring Verónica and talking more with Diana. Excusing herself to the bathroom, Verónica rushes to the room where the girls had the seance to be startled by a blind nun at the school, whom most students have come to address as Sister Death. She tells Verónica that she knows what she did and that she needs to protect her siblings. After school she confronts Rosa about her absence with her and says her parents are away for the weekend and will throw a party on Saturday. Verónica asks why she wasn't the first to know when Diana butts in and says she's telling you now. Verónica runs off after being treated horribly by her friend and runs back home.

Unsure of what to do, Verónica looks through her various magazines on the occult to see how she can protect her siblings. She sees a symbol the Vikings supposedly used to protect themselves against spirits and demons, and draws it on a piece of paper to protect her sisters and brother. That night, she sees a demon in her sisters' room and she rushes to their room to see a shadowy figure creepily making it's way closer to her sister and choking her. To stay safe from the demon, she wakes them up, and tells them they will sleep in the living room, to which their mom walks in later that night and tells everyone to go back to their respective rooms. It is at this time that Verónica tells her mother that she attempted a seance with her friends to attempt to contact her deceased father. Her mother is obviously upset at this and tells Verónica that she needs to stop with the nonsense and go to sleep. The dream she has this time is her siblings, possessed, biting her wrists, also attempting to sacrifice her. She screams for her mother, who appears in the dream and does nothing to stop the torment. She instead reaches across Verónica's body and squeezes her hand over her lower body and makes it seem like Verónica is having her period.

Verónica wakes up screaming but seems to be fine, other than a couple bit marks on her arms. She looks on the mattress and it looks like she is experiencing her first period, but she flips her mattress to discover that she is not, but her body imprint burned on the underside of the mattress. She does the same to her siblings' mattresses and the same is on theirs. Preparing her siblings to go to their mom's work, she sees her little brother with an open book. She mentions that he cannot read, but he tells her that their dad read the book aloud to him. Verónica instructs him to never listen to whoever is saying they are his dad and to cover his ears and to yell for Verónica should this happen again. After preparing the kids. She drops them off and rushes to school to speak with Sister Death who tells her to right her wrongs. When another sister comes into the room, Verónica tells her that Sister Death was just helping her with a project. Before leaving, Sister Death tells that the books will have the answer she is looking for. Verónica rushes to Rosa's house with a new Ouija board and occult books explaining that they need to redo the seance because they failed to say good-bye during their last seance. Rosa let's Verónica know what she heard in the basement and essentially abandons her, to die on her own. Frightened, she gets the kids from her mom's work and decides to attempt to fix the problem with her sisters. Her sisters help set up the seance while she has her brother draw the symbol from before all along the walls, however the page changes and Antoñito, being illiterate, draws not a symbol of protection, but a symbol of invocation.

The seance seems to work until the door opens and closes on the siblings frightens them. A cup rolls down the hall to her sisters' bedroom where the demon can reach the family. Verónica calls the police to save the family, but then Antoñito is kidnapped and Verónica rushes to save him. She falls on the bathroom floor and is knocked out for about a minute or so. She wakes up to see Antoñito sitting next to the tub; she grabs him and her sisters and they rush out of the building. When they reach the exit, she realizes that she no longer has Antoñito as the demon makes her believe she has him, but does not. She locks her sisters outside as she rushes up to save her brother. She runs back to the bathroom where she sees the demon take Antoñito and their shadows morph to form the actual demon. She runs back to her room to escape it where she finds the real Antoñito in her closet, plugging his ears and calling Verónica's name, just as she had instructed earlier. She realizes that she was the demon the whole time, that she was the one who almost choked her sister, and messed with her brother's bath, and various other incidents. The police find Verónica in a contorted position but still alive. They take Antoñito downstairs to their mother and get her on a gurney; she dies on the way to the hospital.

All of that being said, there are almost no noteworthy scares in this film, although the transitions and cinemaphotography are excellent. Neither me nor my friends felt scared at all, and felt a little overhyped on this movie, and extremely let down. That being said, it currently has a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.5/10 rating on IMBd as of the posting of this. This is just my personal opinion of the film, however and you are free to feel how you will about it. I wouldn't say I am not an avid fan of horror films but I do like horror films, and unfortunately, there are some films that do not live up to their hype, and that's okay.

Creating a World of Witches and Wonder

A Conversation with Firebrand's Jessica Chobot, Erika Lewis, and Claudia Aguirre.

Firebrand, the latest original title from Legendary Comics is heading into the home stretch of its inaugural run on digital comics platform, LINE Webtoon. The weekly series follows teenage witch Natali Presano as she comes to terms with her role in a supernatural war, while dealing with the everyday pressures of young adulthood. Firebrand is the brainchild of Jessica Chobot and Erika Lewis. Chobot is best known as host for Nerdist News. Before joining Nerdist, she was a host and recurring personality on IGN and G4. Lewis has made a name for herself as a young adult and fantasy author with her work Game of Shadows, and The 49th Key, in addition to Firebrand. “Jessica Chobot has been such a huge part of the Legendary family for years,” said Robert Napton, Vice President and Editorial Director of Legendary Comics. “We were so thrilled to have an opportunity to support her exploration of a new creative venture and we know that she and Erika Lewis have created a truly compelling new heroine and story that fans will truly become immersed in.” Legendary Backstory had the opportunity to talk with Chobot, Lewis, and artist Claudia Aguirre about the exciting new series as it heads into the second half of its season. See what they had to say about creating the comic below!

Q: As an intro, can you tell the readers a little bit about what Firebrand is all about and talk about the process in which it’s come to fruition. Where did the idea originate from, how did it develop, how did each of you become involved and come together to create it, etc.?

JC: You know, Firebrand is sort of a combination of a coming of age story and a traditional hero’s journey. At its heart, it’s really about a young woman who we’ve seen growing up, who basically just never felt like she belonged anywhere. This was actually an idea that Erika had that she came to me with one day when we were just talking and hanging out. We started volleying ideas back and forth and eventually realized we should do something with this because it started to grow so quickly during that first conversation. So we just started meeting up after that and exchanging ideas and characters and relationships. Eventually it really felt like we had something and we wanted to shop it around and obviously one of the first places we went to was Legendary. EL: Jessica and I worked together at G4 and both had obsessions with witches and magic and all things insane. But for me, I’m obsessed with ancient myths and legends, especially when it comes to magic in different places around the world. Basque is such a unique place and culture and really unlike anything else around it. I did a lot of research into pre-Christianity times in Basque, finding timeless myths. We hope to bring to pieces of them to life in a very unique Erika-Jessica-Claudia type of way. I saw (artist) Claudia Aguirre’s work at another publisher and I was so impressed, and was like ‘oh, how cool it would be to have three women!’ So (Legendary Comics’) Robert Napton got in touch with Claudia and thankfully she was excited about the idea!

Q: Claudia, can you talk about the process in designing the look of Firebrand from early sketches to the finished art?

CA: Well, the creative process for me is like a movie in my head. Jessica and Erika are great. They are very, very cinematic in what they describe so I can see it in my head. I initially try to make sense of my own idea and I do some thumbnailing on paper and try to make it look really cool. Then, I start translating that onto the computer, so I’ll draw it and show everything to the team. They’ll tell me if it doesn’t work and give me feedback. After that, I do the inking process and then the colors too.

Q: Which real stories and history (if any) did you pull from to inspire the style of witchcraft/characterization of the Sorgin in the series? Are there references to any of these in the story or in the artwork?

EL: Historically speaking, the Spanish Inquisitions have been incorporated into the backstory of "Sorgin" mythology, our fictional universe. The inquisitions put paganism on trial during the spread of Christianity in Western Europe. Although you can find a good deal about the Spanish Inquisitions and witch trials, the specific story we tell in Firebrand is something Jessica and I made up. CA: For the art, there is definitely a strong influence from Spain, the border between Spain and France. It’s definitely a process of trying to piece things together to make a whole universe that isn’t there. It’s quite fun.

Q: It’s evident that Natali Presano is a badass. How important is it to have kickass female protagonists like Natali in comics? Are there any comic characters out there that you drew inspiration from in fleshing her character out?

JC: It’s always been important, and we’ve always tackled the story with Natali being a character with a lot of self-sufficiency. But, with how things stand in the U.S., it feels even more important right now. Not only to have that represented for women and girls, but really for anybody who feels left out from “average society." It’s helpful to have a character that shows, if you are true to yourself, you can utilize your power to get through tough times. You can be admired and I think that is so important to have that in a character right now. EL: Absolutely. When Natali sees a wrong, she wants to right it. She wants to do the right thing. But sometimes what she wants to do butts up against Sorgin law, and causes her to get in trouble. Not that it would ever stop her. Deep down inside, she has what it takes character to do the right thing and stand up for what she believes is fair. CA: We always needed people like Natali in comics - we need to not feel alone. For people who feel alone or have been through things, it is important to have these characters portrayed. We have the opportunity to be someone who makes a difference, so we have to make use of it.

Q: Going back to the artwork, it features a cool contrast between the realism of the human world in Washington that Natali comes from and the more fantastical setting of Eder. Claudia, what went into imagining and designing both settings and what key differences did you want Eder to have to set it apart from the human world?

CA: Well, I tried to make the culture. I sadly couldn’t find much in history before Christianity, so I found out a little of their principles and dialect and some stone monuments that they had. Essentially, I took a little of all of this and tried to make an evolving city of Eder. I tried to stay away from the Stone Age so I could make it a little more medieval. I could Google Map a lot of the places in Seattle, so that made that setting easier to do. But the main expansion for me was to try and make it a bit more magical. I tried to make the magical more blueish and the realistic setting of Seattle more grey.

Q: Were there elements of your own lives that you drew from to go into the story or even into the artwork?

EL: On the story side, I will say that for me, I am from D.C. and grew up in a politically charged environment. A very argumentative atmosphere. The kind of place you either love or hate. Also I am from a divorced family. Some of the characters may have been developed around real people. Also, I understand Natali's need to want to feel accepted for who she is, to be a part of a family that allows her to be herself, because I never felt like I fit in anywhere. JC: I guess for me, it wasn’t too specific besides growing up and being interested in the paranormal and the occult and being the weird girl at school. I was kind of shunned by a lot of the kids growing up, so for me it was a matter of identifying as not part of the group mantra. Also though, as I grow up, realizing that there isn’t anything wrong with me, it is just what I like. So that is what I think I brought to Natali in a little bit of a subconscious way.

Q: The “direct address” to the reader style of narration is a cool device that makes the story feel almost interactive in a way, drawing the reader in and directly questioning them. How did you decide on that and what do you think it brings to the storytelling?

JC: Well, we didn’t start with that in the beginning - we had a traditional approach. But we decided to bring in Natali’s voice, because we wanted to break the fourth wall and feel more invested by having Natali talk more to them. EL: She is sarcastic at times, and very powerful. The real parts of her, like everyone, can be insecure and afraid and we try to really humanize her and let people into the fact that she isn’t necessarily what she puts out to the world. All of those things surrounding Natali, her internal voice, we were hoping to give people an insight into who she truly is.

Q: The series is at times hilarious and at times deals with some pretty dark themes. How do you walk that tricky tightrope in the writing and the tone to maintain that balance?

JC: It is a fine line, especially if you have a younger audience. However, these things really happen, so sugarcoating it isn’t necessarily a great thing to do either. So, drawing on all of the traumatic experiences of Natali’s we really wanted to approach all of them from the best angle we could. We wanted to give the backstory and make it relatable, but not turn off the readership by going overboard. These are all issues kids and families deal with growing up, so we wanted to address them but remain respectful. EL: You can see in the comments on each issue: people talk about things they go through. With Natali specifically, the balance of keeping the comic relief but also the dark tones, the greatest thing was using that inner voice and letting the reader into her head; knowing when she was excited, or feeling sarcastic or funny. We tried to make it palatable. We tried to do moments of light-heartedness, especially during those first few chapters.
