Note
hey sorry to bother you and if this question was asked already in your discord theme code there are likes and random post at the side thats green i was wondering how to add more of those and how to add the ask button because i have asks enabled but when i copied the code the ask function isnt showing up
anon sent another message a little after this that I assume means they figured this out, but just in case it'd help anyone else, I'll go ahead and answer this!
ask and submit
both of these are blog-dependent; if you have the tumblr settings "let people ask questions" and "let people submit posts" turned on, they'll display! make sure to go to your actual blog in a new tab to check that these links appear, because the Customize page can be buggy and not display some stuff even when it's enabled and visible.
more "server" links
this'll take a bit of theme html editing, but it should be fairly simple! just copy/pasting a single line in the right place, then editing that a bit.
To start, you want to find the place in the code you'll be inserting your links, so open up the Edit HTML page in the Customize menu, then Ctrl+F to 'a class="more"'
Tumblr media
Just above that (and below "IfShowArchiveLink"), hit enter to get a new line. This is where you'll be adding your links! (There's a screenshot of the complete code at the end of this post, if you'd like visual reference.)
Now, all your links will follow a similar format:
<a href="YOUR-URL-HERE" data-tippy-content="YOUR-LABEL-HERE">SOMETHING-HERE</a>
For all the link types, to make this point to the link you want it to go to:
Change YOUR-URL-HERE to the url you want, e.g. https://tumblr.com
Change YOUR-LABEL-HERE to some text describing the link, e.g. Likes, Following, My Link, whatever. This can technically be as long as you want, but try and keep it short and simple.
Next, figure out what you want as the link icon (SOMETHING-HERE). This can be text, an SVG, or an image, all of which are pictured below:
Tumblr media
TEXT: Replace SOMETHING-HERE with whatever text. Keep it short, under 5 letters if you can. Uppercase/lowercase, whatever works.
SVG: Replace SOMETHING-HERE with an SVG, usually in a format similar to:
<svg width="1.5em" height="1.5em" viewbox="...STUFF HERE...">...STUFF HERE...</svg>
IMAGE: Replace SOMETHING-HERE with an image, in the format:
<img src="IMAGE-URL-HERE">
For image servers, you'll also want to add this to the Add Custom CSS section (that's at the bottom of the Customize page, in Advanced options):
servers a img { border-radius: 50%; height: var(--size); width: var(--size); object-fit: cover; transition: inherit; } #servers a:hover img, #servers a.active img { border-radius: 30% }
The HTML that resulted in the above three server-links was this. Note the double-hyphens in each var(); sometimes Tumblr reformats these into long dashes, so you'll have to edit them back by hand:

Block becomes the latest fintech to lay off workers
Tumblr media
Block, the fintech company whose subsidiaries include Square, Cash App and Afterpay, is laying off staff at a tumultuous time for tech industry workers.
That’s according to an internal memo from CEO Jack Dorsey, obtained first by Business Insider, which states that “the growth of [Block] has far outpaced the growth of … business and revenue.”

How to Get AdSense Approval Quickly a Personal Journey to Monetizing a Niche Blog

The layoffs were executed this morning and affected staff in the Cash App, foundational and Square arms of Block. Reportedly, around 1,000 people — or 10% of Block’s headcount — were impacted.
“We decided it would be better to do at once rather than arbitrarily space them out, which didn’t seem fair to the individuals or to the company,” said Dorsey in the note to Block staff. “When we know we need to take an action, we want to take it immediately, rather than let things linger on forever.”
The firings don’t come as a total surprise. Block said in an earnings call last year that it would reduce its headcount from 13,000 in the Q3 2023 to an “absolute cap” of 12,000 by the end of this year.
But they add to a sense of malaise in the fintech and broader tech sector, which has seen tens of thousands of workers let go in the past few weeks.
Just today, PayPal said it would fire some 2,500 people, or 9% of the company. Last week, Brex, the expense management startup, laid off 282, or 20% of its staff. And Treasure Financial, a platform offering cash management software for businesses, let 14 employees go, leaving the company with about a third of its former workforce.
Block’s suffered a difficult, downward-trending year and change.
Revenues from Cash App, the peer-to-peer payments service, have declined steeply. Meanwhile, the buy now, pay later service Afterpay, which Block acquired in 2021 for $29 billion, has posted serious losses. Block’s Bitcoin revenue has fallen corresponding with the fall in the price of the cryptocurrency last year (although that’s recovered recently). And Square faces growing competition on multiple fronts, including from Fiserv’s Clover, Toast and Stripe.
Investors are displeased. Square stock retreated around 30% from January 2023 to October as Block founder Dorsey took the reigns from ex-Square head Alyssa Henry.
Block’s recent attempts to reinvigorate business include adding generative AI features to Square, acquiring music-focused fintech startup Hifi and launching a self-custody Bitcoin wallet, Bitkey, in the form of a mobile app and hardware storage.
Block reported $5.62 billion in revenue for the third quarter of 2023, with $44 million in profit on its Bitcoin holdings.

Notes:
This A.M.V. is currently semi- (mostly) / FINISHED. As of now, the preliminary version up until ending is completed. Hopefully you find some enjoyment so far though! - The intro and Koushiro’s section took about 1 hour 15 min alone. - Taichi’s section took another 25~30 min or so (I’m rounding Taichi’s out to about 25.) - The 2nd to last finishing touch took another 45 min of editing for an about 17 second section. - This last one took almost 1 hour more. - And finally, the final stretch was 2 hours 35 min; (Add that all together, and it’s about) almost 6~ hours in total. (this time, it crashed multiple times in-between! I managed to save it!!) As a result of crashings occuring, I tend to use longer clips towards the middle and end. However, this time I somehow managed to fit in a bit more than usual! This one may not be 100 percent polished ‘soon’, but I’m aiming to work on it more by Oct. [If I can’t finish it by then, it’ll be put on the list of things to finish ‘sometime’]

* And yet you make that scowl + Acting so evasive, trying to bluff your way through <You’ll just get tired if you KEEP THAT Up>

4 Tips to Succeed at Getting Your Online Degree
#Poop4U
With the current state of the world, so many of us are at home for the first time in years. Some of us are fortunate enough to be working, while others are out of job and wondering what to do to fill the time.
If you’ve ever considered going back to school to either finish your degree or start an entirely new career, there’s never been a better time.
Today I want to share 4 tips to succeed at getting your online degree, to help you set your sights on the career — and the life — that you want and deserve.
Tumblr media
4 Tips to Succeed at Getting Your Online Degree
1. Get a dog
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to bring emotional balance into your life. If you plan to start work on an online degree and currently live alone, consider adopting a dog to keep you company during the long days and evenings of studying for mid-terms and finals.
Not only will this help you to avoid stress, but a dog of any size or age serves as a built-in, four-legged security system for any apartment or house.
Even if you don’t live alone, consider adding a dog to your family to add an element of friendliness and companionship to your domestic environment.
Curious which breed(s) would be the best fit for your lifestyle? Check out this blog post to learn a little about some family-friendly breeds.
2. Create — and stick to — a daily schedule
Taking on a degree, whether online or in a traditional university, means class time and study time will most likely cut into what you used to call free time. At least for a while, those free hours will be more rare than usual.
Do what high level corporate managers do to handle tight schedules, which is to make a detailed weekly schedule that includes an hour by hour breakdown of each day’s activities.
Another suggestion is to use time blocking. Do you work in blocks of time, focusing on nothing but the task at hand during a particular period of time. It’s a great way to “batch” your work and get more done in a specified period of time.
Don’t be afraid to tweak and adjust your schedule during the first few weeks of classes, but after that, try to stick to the program as much as possible.
If you are looking for a great planner to help keep track of important dates, appointments, and more, I highly recommend the Plum Paper Planner. You’ll save 10 percent on your first order of $30 or more when you use my referral link.
3. Apply for student loans
Do you want the peace of mind that comes with not having to worry about tuition and degree-related expenses? That’s what you’ll get if you apply for a student loan.
The great majority of applicants get approved, enjoy reasonable interest rates, favorable repayment terms, and monthly payments that fit with your budget.
Note that it’s best to apply as soon as you decide on a degree and institution.
Unlike in the dark ages when I first went to college, nowadays the entire application process can be done via a short online form. You’ll hear back quickly in most cases.
4. Speak with a career counselor
Check with a local community college to see if you can visit with one of their career counselors, either for free or a small fee. This short session will help you decide on what kind of degree to pursue, see what kinds of job opportunities will be on your horizon, and understand how much studying will be required to earn your diploma.
Some online schools have counselors you can use at no cost, just to get a general idea of what a non-traditional degree entails. I strongly recommend speaking to a counselor before committing to an online program.

Apple Crumble Recipe

Basic Apple Crumble Recipe
This basic Apple Crumble recipe is the perfect introduction to classic English puddings and pudding-making in general. It is very quick and easy to make, can be produced a day ahead and is great either hot from the oven or at room temperature. Pretty much everyone loves apple-based desserts – from apple pie to baked apples – so it is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser too. I love to eat it with a drizzle of double cream but you can also eat it with custard, which is probably more traditional, or with a good vanilla ice cream.
I use only cooking apples in my crumble. These are apples which will disintegrate to a mush when cooked so that you have a thick apple puree at the base of your crumble. Eating apples will retain some firmness when cooked. If you want a bit more texture to your crumble, you can use a combination of half cooking apples and half eating apples. In my view, just using eating apples for a crumble doesn’t really work as they do not give that soft, thick apple sauce that you need for this kind of pudding. Keep the eating apples for deserts such as tarte tatin where you want your apples to keep their shape.
The only flavouring, apart from apples, is cinnamon which is a classic flavour companion. The smell of warm cinnamon-spiced apples is guaranteed to make you feel warm and cosy on a cold winter’s day.
Tumblr media
Rub the fat and flour together
Tumblr media
Add the sugar
Tumblr media
Peel, core and chop the apples
Tumblr media
Place the apples in a baking dish and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon
Tumblr media
Top with the crumble mixture
Tumblr media
Bake for 30 minutes

Description
This basic Apple Crumble recipe is a classic English pudding which brings together cinnamon-flavoured apples with a crisp, buttery topping.
Scale 1x2x3x
Ingredients
1 kg cooking apples (eg Bramleys)
25 to 50 g caster sugar
A little ground cinnamon
175 g butter or vegetable fat
350 g plain flour
175 g caster sugar
Pinenuts or flaked almonds
Instructions
Set your oven to 180 C, 400 F or Gas Mark 4.
Peel and core the cooking apples.  Cut into pieces of approximately 1 cm.
Put the apple pieces in a large baking dish (20 cm x 28 cm).  Sprinkle with caster sugar.  You will need between 25 g and 50 g.  The amount of sugar depend on the sourness of the apples and also how sweet you like your crumble.  You can taste a piece of the apple to see how sour it is.   Add a little ground cinnamon.
Next make the crumble topping.  Put the 350 g flour and 175 g butter (or vegetable fat) in a bowl and “rub in” using your fingers,  or use a food processor, until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs.  Then stir in the 175 g of caster sugar.
Pour the crumble topping on top of the apples.
Place the baking dish in the oven and cook for 30 minutes.
If you wish, you can sprinkle some pinenuts or flaked almonds on top of the crumble for the final 5 minutes that it is in the oven.  They should get brown and toasted (but not burnt) if they are added at this stage.
Notes
You can eat your crumble hot from the oven or at room temperature.  I think it is best at room temperature, not a traditional view (!), as it brings out the flavours of apple and cinnamon.

Hello! This wip blog is so well organized, thank you for collecting them! This is very forward, but was wondering if I ask you a huge favor? I would like to use the code you are using for the 'about' page. it is an old pohroro theme that no longer appears on their blog after they changed styles. Would it be possible for you to paste it in the reply, or by any means you prefer? Thank you for your kindness!
yeah, absolutely! i’ll post it below the cut. it’s got all my changes, obviously, but let me know if you’re having any trouble with it. (unfortunately, i deleted the image part of the code. sorry for the inconvenience.)

FLIPS / TRICKS / MOTIVATION
Tumblr media
Bryan Scagline is a player, motivator, designer, and all around do it all dude.  Pretty much everything you have seen recently form Kendama USA is the work of Bryan. Instagram, team edits, promo graphics, tours, and more.
Bryan recently dropped a video titled “flips and tricks” where he flexes with the new KUSA flip series. 1 design, 2 colors , INVERTED to make 2 dope damas.
Peep the video and dive deeper into the mind of Scagline below.
youtube
So on top of all the work he is doing for kusa dude still goes out and bangs out an edit.  THAT TAKES MOTIVATION.  I had a chance to get some questions to Bryan about motivation. peep the knowledge below and watch the new edit.
Jake -Do you have any nick names?
Bryan - SCAGSSSS. Ironically enough SCAGS was my dads nickname growing up as well! My younger brother doesn't get called the family nickname for some reason lol, but with out asking, the nickname has stuck itself to me! Such a good feeling walking into a jam and just hearing people show love - “SCAAAGS!!” Love ya’ll  <3_
-If you were to turn your latest video “flips and Tricks” into a pie graph what would take up most of the pie?
30% promotion, 70% swag. _
-Making a kendama edit takes a lot of skills.  Cine, Editing, Kendama, Location, Graphics, promotion, and thinking of tricks. Which of these categories have you spent the most time practicing?
Thank god you, Colin, Jero all knew how to work cameras and capture the cine film / editing LOOK of kendama. That's what got me on the hook. Creating the tricks, landing them, finding the perfect locations, and the feeling of it all coming together is what keeps me going.
-“Kendama” is always changing. For players, business, communities, design, tricks, and events.  Whats your main motivation right now with kendama?
My main motivation for kendama is just to get it in front of more people. I LOVE first reactions. Before the spike. The initial curiosity of somebody stopping, approaching you, and asking “what is that!”  Having gotten to where I am with Kendama today is amazing. I will always have a voice and help guide kids, scenes, players in the right direction. I will always put the culture first and I will always share the history it has. Lastly, I aim to produce quality video and content that gets people pumped. I wanna give the feeling that YOU guys gave me when I first saw kendama. (And when I first saw Turner do the BB flip in the Japan 2012 video.) That shit changed my life. Seriously. I quit my job and I work for Kendama USA now lol. Kendama has literally changed the direction of my life. I blame Colin and Zack._
-To me your motivation shows in the new video “Flips and Tricks”.  it takes time to put a video like this together. Even if it only took you an hour to film all the tricks it's about the motivation to grab your cam and go out and bang out some tricks with the intention of motivating others.  How much does the feedback of others influence your motivation?
Droping a video is the best feeling. When you drop a video you’ve worked really hard on and everyone shows love / shares their favorite parts, omg. Thats the best. I legit get the chills just talking about it. I plan out the tricks, the kendamas used, the song that will be in the video, POV, follow cam, tripod, the angles, location, etc. I usually know what the video will look, sound, and feel like before I even string my kendama.
-Was there a time in your live where you had NO motivation? Also What pulled you out of the motivation dead zone?
Everybody gets in slumps. What I do to get out of it is - find one trick (or even a transition) that I'm feeling and just hone it, try it differently (penguin grip/ fast hand) ,and blow it up. If that isn’t working, I’ll dead ass do cup flow and go back to basics until I essentially find that 'AWE' moment and build from there. Plan out 3-6 tricks, b roll, boom. We back at it.
-Name one motivation tool that EVEYONE has access to and can use to get that BOOST of energy and motivation that makes you want to go out and get it?
THIS WORKS. I Promise. What I do to motivate myself when I feel like I suck - Go back and watch 1-3 Kendama videos that got you FIRED up back in the day. Find literally ONE trick you think is dope and alter it, make it harder, or add onto it! Find a clever way to tweak THAT trick and post it on insta. Don't apologize or type some bullshit “sorry this is all I could land” caption. Those are THE worst. Talk about how this trick inspired you and you wanna challenge somebody else! Before you know it, you’ll be lacing BETTER tricks and you’ll forget all about the slump… until it comes back. Then repeat. Lol
-Would you rather extreme armpit hair (Long and thick like you can’t wear short sleeve shirts because its busting out) or extremely lopsided nostrils (like pinky fit in the left and thumb fit in the right)?
WOW. Ummmmm I guess gimme the weird shnoz. If I can't move my arms, how will I lace fastest of hands?

D-DAY IS HERE
IT'S DEADLINE DAY!!
Tumblr media
Art and Fics Due - September 26th, 11:59 PM (Midnight) PST (here is a timezone converter.) ~ We can't wait to see what you all have created and can't wait to share it with everyone! IMPORTANT NOTE: I will be sending out emails to our artists who were willing to pinch hit art, as we have one outstanding art claim, and we may delay Debut Day if it is not picked up. (There may also be a slight delay because the mods are sick and in school, but we are doing our best not to let that happen!) POSTING: In case you need a hand with posting or last minute questions, check under the cut for a rundown on how to post your final works to the 2018 Collection.
POSTING REQUIREMENTS Where do we post our completed fics? We are using AO3 collections, with the deadline for submission as September 26th, and the reveal date of October 1st. You can post them up early!! Post them up now, if you want! You can also post your fics anywhere else you like, just don't post them anywhere before the Debut Date. Everyone who has signed up for this challenge should have an AO3 account, but if you don't, you can still sign up. You can ask a friend for an invite code, or you can request from A03 here or at
Tumblr media
ao3_invitecodes. If you are unfamiliar with it, here is the FAQ of AO3. Do not publish your fic for everyone to see at AO3. Instead, submit it for our 2018 collection. Only the author of a work can add it to a collection, and then the mods approve it and we'll reveal it on the Debut Date. Once you've done that, we are also asking you to drop an email to thehetbigbang [at] gmail dot com when you submit your work to A03, with the following information: Email Subject Line: (Fic or Art Submission. YOUR NAME.)
AO3 Name/LJ Name: (both) Fandom: Pairing: Artwork or Fic: (artwork for "Title of Fic, by Author") or (Fic: "Title, rating, and word count. Big Bang or Little Bang.") Summary: (if applicable.)
Further Posting guidelines below. (The pics used are for the old 2012 submissions, but just mentally adjust for 2018.) 1. Sign up for A03. You can ask a friend for an invite code, or you can request from A03 here or at
Tumblr media
ao3_invitecodes. 2. DO NOT POST YOUR FICS/ARTS SO THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC CAN SEE THEM. Double check after posting to make sure it doesn't get posted to the general audience. If it does, delete the work and start over. Instead, you need to allow the mods to collect your fic/arts so that we can reveal everything together on October 1st. Go here, to the 2018 Het Big Bang Collection, and go the "Post to Collection" button in the top right corner. The collection is currently open, moderated and unrevealed.
Tumblr media
This will bring you to the normal template where you submit your fic/artwork. In the first block, you fill out all the tags: fandom, warnings, ratings, characters, pairings, additional tags, etc. In the second block, you fill out the preface information, including title, summary, and author's notes. 2a. For Artist: your summary line should include your author's name and the title of their story (if you know it). 3. In the third block, for "Associations" make sure the line for "Post to Collections/Challenges" lists "Het_Big_Little_Bang_Challenge_2018."
Tumblr media
3a. For Artists: the next line, "Gift this work to:" should be filled out as well. Artist, you know your Author's A03 name, which should have been provided to you through your emails. If for some reason it was not, please contact your authors and get this name from them. Fill in the "Gift this work to:" line with your author's name. That will link your artwork to them. After the submissions have gone live on the Debut Date, we would like you to go back and edit your submission to add in a link to the specific story you created your artwork for. But until the entire big bang goes public, the main way you'll attach your artwork to the piece will be by identifying the author through gifting. When you finally get the chance to link to the story, edit your submission and use the HTLM coding: <*a href="INSERT THE URL HERE">Title, by Author. (Remove the *) You can put this in your author's note or summary. 3b. For Authors: After the submissions have gone live on the Debut Date, we would need you to go back and edit your submission to add in a link to the specific artwork that was created for your story. You don't have to "Gift this work to:" to the artist, but it'd be neat if you wanted to do so. When you finally get the chance to link to the artwork, edit your submission and use the HTLM coding: <*a href="INSERT THE URL HERE">Title, by Artist. (Remove the *) You can put this in your author's note or summary. 4. Formatting and coding guidelines are important. 4a. For Artists: AO3 video embeds are working from Youtube, Vimeo, blip.tv, Dailymotion, Viddler, Metacafe, and 4shared. So if you have a video, you upload it to Youtube for example, and then embed into an AO3 post. For images like artwork and icons and banners and cover art, use the <*img src="INSERT YOUR URL HERE"> HTML coding (remove the *). You can first upload your images at Tinypic or imgbox or a similar image hosting website, and then make an A03 post with the HTML coding. (*NOTE: As of 2017, photobucket no longers allows you to post and link without paying big bucks, so avoid photobucket.) 5. Submit your fic/artwork. You need to make sure when you hit "Post" that you see this text at the top of the resulting page:
"This work is part of an ongoing challenge and will be revealed soon! You can find details here: Het Big/Little Bang Challenge 2018"
Tumblr media
6. Now, your fic should NOT be displayed to the general audience. It might not even show up on your dash, but fear not. You can still edit, add new chapters, mess around with it to your heart's content. We, the mods, unfortunately do not have access to your story. We cannot tell if it is properly formatted or not. THIS IS FRUSTRATING, but there's nothing we can do about it. We can only see your name. All works are titled "Mystery Works" until we reveal the entire big bang. So, please make sure your own fic is properly formatted. If you need to edit your fic, login and go to your dashboard. Go to the "Edit Works" button in the top right corner. From there, you can edit your works.
Tumblr media
A03 will require you to format a header with all regular information on it. Remember to properly tag your works, including appropriate warnings. Both HTML and Rich Text are supported, and you can edit/delete, have multiple chapters, etc... 1. The Rich Text Editor lets you add formatting, links and pictures to text without using HTML tags. It also has an option for pasting from Word which will preserve some of your Word formatting, although please note that this is buggy. The Rich Text Editor is only available for your work text. 2. The HTML editor allows you to change the look of your text with HTML tags. It can be used in any place you can submit text, although some fields permit only a small subsection of allowed tags. You can see a full list of the allowed HTML on the Archive FAQ, but the standard HTML tags is as follows: b, big, blockquote, br, caption, center, datetime, div, dl, dt, em, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, height, hr, href, i, img, ins, small, span, src, strike, strong, sub, sup, table, u, and more. Also, a few years ago,
Tumblr media
anr was a saint and provided you with a post that explained "how to format a fic for posting in less than 30 seconds no matter the story length or amount of formatting" trick. The mods won't be overly picky about formatting. I'd prefer for all dividers and scene breaks to use <*hr> (remove the *) which creates a horizontal line that serves perfectly as a scene break. However, that's optional. You choose your own way to format. Other optional suggestions, just for uniformity sake's: How do I do Chapter Titles: Bold 'em. How do I timestamp and do locations: Italicize the dates and locations. How do I do subtitle stuff: Italicize it. There is only one major fail regarding format, and that has to do with paragraphs breaks. There must be a full line break between paragraphs. Example of doing it wrong:
Chapter One: The Invasion March 6, 2005 - The City of Atlantis Elizabeth ducked quickly behind a console and attempted to catch her breath. A flush of pink colored her cheeks and a thin sheen of sweat had appeared on her brow. If the situation weren't so dire, John would have been turned on. As it was, however, he couldn't give it much thought as he had to focus on the batch of Ancient zombies that were slowly staggering in through the Stargate. "At least they can't run," he offered lamely. Elizabeth spared him a glare. "Why can't they run?" "I don't know." John shrugged. "But they never seem to run. They always lurch. Maybe when they're brought back to life they don't get knees?"
Example of doing it right:
Chapter Two: Ancient Ex-Girlfriends Yes, They're Zombies Too Elizabeth peeked around the consol. "Oh, my god," she breathed. "Is that--" "Chaya?!" John squeaked. "Talk about creepy ex-girlfriends." Rodney scrunched his nose. "She doesn't look good in green." John cringed and crouched down lower. "Do you think she's their leader?" Elizabeth looked thoughtful. "Well, this may be better for us." She narrowed her eyes at John. "We can give them you in trade for a cease fire--" Something caught her attention behind John and she broke off. "No, wait. Look to the left! That's... oh, god, John. That's Teer!" John and Rodney stared in disbelief. "Damn you, Kirk!" Rodney groused, and hit John upside the head. "We're going to be killed by a legion of your dead ex-girlfriends!" "Okay, everybody calm down," John soothed. "Let's not overreact and go blaming--" "Hey, look, your ex-wife!" "What?!!"
Grammar and Spelling fail: If your fic doesn't look beta'ed, we will call you on it, which will create an AWKWARD situation for both of us. Having a beta is a REQUIREMENT. Grammar, spelling, proper paragraph structure, etc... these are all REQUIREMENTS. You need to give your beta ample opportunity to go over your fic for mistakes and edits, so remember to factor that into your deadline. Don't have a beta? Check out this post!
Can I post it to my journal a few days early to show my friends? No. The first time you show your fic for this big bang must be on Debut Day, on this comm. Mods will handle the revealing details. There will be more posts on that to come. Once the Big Bang collection goes live on Oct 1, feel free to post your stuff wherever. Also, please remember that extensions for final fic and art submissions will not be granted. Please make sure your stories and art are submitted no later than September 26th. If you absolutely cannot make it, contact a mod immediately - either via email at thehetbigbang [at] gmail.com, or on the Page-A-Mod post, or PM
Tumblr media
red_b_rackham or

Europe? But I have no Euros!
It’s that time of the year where everyone on our social media accounts are traveling Europe and we’re all thinking: “how do they afford this?!” … What most of us don’t realize, however, is that seeing Europe is not as expensive as it used to be and if you do a lot of the little things mentioned below, you’ll be astonished at how much moola you can save! This week, I want to tell you the things I think are most important to help save you money while hopping the pond and exploring new cities and cultures.
1)      Travel out of season
This might seem like an obvious one and it is certainly one I have mentioned in the past. It is so important to study and note when peak seasons are in different destinations. For Europe, Summer is the peak season and it will leave you with jacked up rates on hotels, bus fares, train fares, and even food and drinks. This is logical as summer vacation is the time when families, single college kids and working couples alike have time to travel. Much of Europe also has a similar climate to the differing parts of the United States so logically, tourists want nice weather wherever they visit. That being said, if you can suck it up and add a couple of layers in the colder regions of Europe, you can save quite a bit of currency. To me (who is coming from the bitter cold in Wisconsin), that totally pays off!
2)      Flights
With flights, what I like to say is “splurge now and save later”. Flights may be unavoidably expensive when traveling overseas. They are longer, they require more gas, they require more service from the crew members. Blah, blah, blah. If you want to see Europe, you might just have to pay the extra money for a flight and know that it will be the most expensive line of your European travel budget. According to cheapair.com, the best average time to buy your plane ticket from your departure date is approximately 160 days. Searching within that range should guarantee you get a relatively good deal on flights. Don’t be turned off by the price of the airline ticket, though. Some things in life are priceless and an expensive airline ticket shouldn’t deter you from all of the phenomenal experiences you will have while you are abroad. In my previous blogs, I’ve mentioned flight trackers like kayak.com and skyscanner.com. Those are good options to use when booking flights to Europe as well. They will track your flight search and let you know when the prices have decreased and when they think they will increase based on previous market trends.
Tumblr media
https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=637&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=bXogW96JBPKatgWz2Yz4Cw&q=flight&oq=flight&gs_l=img.3..0l10.46462.47540.0.47832.10.9.0.1.1.0.163.783.2j5.7.0....0...1c.1.64.img..3.7.677.0..0i67k1.0.p_odbSZi588#imgrc=1gVs11Cpy_cgjM:
3)      You bought your flight to Europe… now what?
Okay, so you paid for your flight and now you have landed at your destination. Europe has a lot to see so you’re probably not going to stay in one place for your whole trip. If you have a desire to do that, totally cool! I would encourage you to venture out and try some of the following things though.
-          Megabus
o   Megabus is a bus service that has cheap tickets. They have tickets starting at 1 GBP (Great British Pound) which equates to about $1.34USD. This is mostly based in the UK. However, they have recently started to bring travelers from London to Amsterdam, Brussels and even Paris. It is best to book a month in advance or you may not get these awesome fairs.
-          Busabout
o   This bus service is ideal for those who are backpacking across Europe. They offer a service in which you can “hop on and hop off” – they make stops at various locations and you can choose when to get on and when to get off. Busabout also offers a flex-pass, in which you can pay about $669USD or $72 a trip to see nine different places. When I first saw that price, I know I was instantly turned off. If you think about the idea that you’re essentially going to nine different destinations for that price, however, it really is a great deal.
-          Flixbus
o   This service is identical to Megabus but it takes you through all of Europe. They offer free WIFI and plug ins so you can still stay in touch with all of your lads back in the United States. They also allow up to three free bags so if you’re a heavy traveler like me, you’re covered! Their prices start incredibly low at only 5 Euros and like Busabout, they have a pass to five cities for only 99 Euros.
-          Budget Airlines
o   A couple of my favorite budget airlines ae Easyjet and Ryanair. If you don’t have the time to spend in a bus or on a train, flying on these airlines is a great alternative. Many of the fares range from $25 - $30 USD so you’ll be relieved to pay this amount after booking your flight from the United States to Europe. One thing to look out for is the added fees. Like any airlines, sometimes they have fine printed fees that can definitely add up so look out for those before booking!
-          Hitchhiking
o   If you’re adventurous, this is a very common trend in Europe. Obviously, use caution while hitch hiking and remember that not everyone has good intentions so go with your gut feeling if you plan to do this. I know it is taboo here in the United States, but in a different country this is accepted and if you feel safe doing it, go for it!
-          Wanderu
o   Wanderu is a site for bus and train travel and they have fares for as little as $10USD. When you are planning your travel, make sure to check out this site. It is an extremely helpful tool to save you money.
Tumblr media

4)      Plan in advance
If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably noticed that I mention “book 30 days in advance” or “make sure to plan this out” a couple of times. This is an often times overlooked essential of traveling abroad. I am guilty of living life on a whim and not being very good at making plans. If you want to save money, though, you have to make sure you are planning things out and booking in advance in order to get the right fares. If money isn’t an issue, live your life on a whim and have a good time! If you’re like most college students though, being frugal is engrained in your everyday life and planning your trip down to hours (okay… maybe days is more realistic) is essential to saving money.
Tumblr media

5)      Hostels
I’ve said in previous posts, “hostels are your friends”. This still applies! They are the most inexpensive way to stay and will help you meet new people who can likely show you the area.
6)      Food
Try to limit your eating out to once a day. Food over in Europe is likely very expensive in the city centers, but if you venture out you may find cheap (and delicious!) eats that will impress both your taste buds and your budget. If you are staying at hostels, shop local and take advantage of the kitchens they supply. Cooking while enjoying a glass or two of local wine with people you have met at these hostels could turn into some of your absolute favorite memories and will help you save money. Plus, you will impress your pals when you come back home and have learned how to make homemade pasta in Italy while they are still cooking their Kraft Mac and Cheese!
Tumblr media

7)      Tourist Information Booths
You’re a tourist. Most locals will know you’re a tourist. Swallow your pride and go visit these booths when you arrive in a new city. The people working the booth will be happy to help you and they likely also provide brochures and coupons for local museums, restaurants, bikes, buses, etc. This will help put you at ease and make sure that any questions you have get answered to ensure that you have the most amazing time.
Tumblr media
https://www.google.com/search?q=tourist+info+booths&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiSzK6Vxs_bAhVPSK0KHW_YDMQQ_AUICigB&biw=1366&bih=588#imgrc=FwspBFV2OcVTvM:
8)      Do less
Sometimes people think that when they travel abroad they have to see every art museum and every historical landmark. I’m not saying disregard these completely, but sometimes it is okay to do less and just relax. Many European cities have beaches (if you don’t like naked bodies, beware of the plethora of nude beaches) and luxury hostels will likely have pools. Enjoy yourself and spend a day unwinding at these places for free.
Tumblr media
https://www.google.com/search?q=european+beaches&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjM4Ly7xs_bAhUDQ60KHVT-DhcQ_AUICigB&biw=1366&bih=588#imgrc=8EkgsCwbxY84bM:
Europe is a beautiful place to visit. There is so much to do. So many things to see. The people are overall amazing, and the views are just as breathtaking. Don’t let the idea of not having any money stop you from going to see what you have seen in thousands of pictures in real life. I believe that everyone should step out of their comfort zone and this may be the perfect opportunity for you to learn about yourself and other cultures at the same time. Enjoy and cheers to seeing the world!

I am sure you have been on Social Media and seen an ad pop up for Peloton which is why I decided to write my Peloton Bike review.  First and foremost let me say when my husband started eyeing this bike around January of this year I was skeptical.
The considerations
For one, he already had a bike which he wasn’t using and when I looked at the price tag of the Peloton I was shocked to say the least.  Then he informed me there is a monthly $39 subscription you want to have because without it, the bike really won’t be used at full capacity.
After thinking about it and hearing my husband talk about it I agreed to getting one.  It arrived in March 2018 and I suspect, to get me to buy in even more, my husband bought me cycle shoes that clip into the Peloton pedals.
We did not purchase everything Peloton such as the water bottles, dumbbells, foam roller, earphones or shoes but we do have a few hoodies and t-shirts because they are cute.
[Tweet “Read all about my #Peloton bike experience and whether you should get one. #pelotonride #femmefitalefitclub”]
Price
I started off balking at the price of a Peloton bike which is around $2,300.  That is not easy for many to swallow but they do have payment plans which is a plus.  That price is only for the bike.  In order to enjoy the online Live and On-Demand classes you need the monthly subscription which is an additional $39.
As you can see it can add up.  Again, if you can move past the sticker shock they do have payment plans which can ease the cost burden on some.
Classes
There are hundreds upon hundreds of classes available with the subscription such as cycling (of course), running, and yoga to name a few.  I am extremely impressed with the amount of classes offered beyond just cycling.
Class durations vary from 5 minutes to 60 minutes and you can filter on them or also by:
class type,
instructor,
music genre or
category (hard, new, most popular, etc.)
Please note, all of the classes are not children friendly.  In certain classes the instructor may use profanity or the lyrics to the songs played aren’t the clean version.
If that isn’t your cup of tea, no problem, they have classes with all genres of music from Country to 80’s Pop to R&B.  Choose what you like, there’s a lot of variety so you are bound to find something you enjoy.
Community
One thing I like a lot about Peloton is the sense of community they provide on Social Media.  They have a private Peloton Page group for Peloton users and each instructor runs their own private group.
People share their personal records with each other, post tons of photos and are very helpful and encouraging when questions are asked by newbies such as myself.
The Peloton app
The app is where you access all the classes unless you have the Peloton Tread.  It allows you to build a profile and share the classes you completed to Social Media.  You can also follow friends there.
While I like and reciprocate a follow for a follow on the Peloton app there isn’t much else there when it comes to socializing.  BTW follow me at Diatta.  You can’t message each other but you can see how many rides or activities they completed and the amount of rewards they’ve collected.
The Peloton ride
The Peloton rides are HIGH ENERGY even the ones for beginners or low impact.  If you’re riding a live or on-demand class, you can virtually high five others who are participating in the class with you.  There’s a bunch of Live and On-Demand cycle classes to choose from as far back as 6 months so pick a class and enjoy yourself.
During the rides there are a lot of features as well such as viewing your heart rate, if you wear a monitor, viewing the artist and song title playing and the leadeboard.
The leaderboard is where you can see all those who ever took the ride, where you rank and who may be riding with you at the same time you are.  You can also see how their output compares to yours which, if you are competitive, can help you push beyond your comfort zone and hit a new PR.
Instructors
I can’t say enough about the Peloton instructors.  I have not even come CLOSE to taking them all because there are a handful which play the music I like so I tend to take their classes over and over but from Robin Arzon to Ally Love to Alex Toussaint you really can’t go wrong.
Some of the instructors also teach multiple disciplines such as cycle, boot camp and running.  I like the versatility of its instructor team.  Each instructor as their own unique style but I’ve found they all keep me interested and motivated during the workout.
All positive attitudes, all smiles and very attractive people, can’t go wrong there.  Many even shout you out on Social Media.
I’ll leave the Instagram names of the ones I follow below.  All you have to do is click on the photo and follow them.

Quick question… What is your actual motivating factor? 💫 What I mean is, what is the root of your motivation? What is feeding your desire? Is it Soul or is it Ego? We say yes to so many things yet possibly never ask ourselves often, if ever, why? Why are we doing things that don’t always feel right or are what we need or want, or can afford just to keep up with the joneses. We say yes to dinners, coffees, meetings, trips, clothing, buying trendy items, moving, relationships, and of course exercise. If I took a poll asking you if they actually enjoy working out, would you say yes? If not, why do you workout? So, you lace up to run. 🏃🏼‍♀️ Why? Do you run to look better or because you actually love the feeling of running? That runners high, that accomplishment of completing a task, a claimed moment of your day that’s device-free 📲 and simply yours, a necessary mental break and “you time”, a treat for your body, a method to focus your competitive spirit, a way to spend time with friends? Is your choice to move initiated by positivity or by a feeling of negativity? When we choose to move because we hate our bodies we run the risk of disappointment in achieving a goal that is never good enough in our heads, never mind the fact that the entire time you spend getting to said point you’ve carried along a negative motivating factor with you into a positive space! How will you create love ❤️ where you bring hate? Both are green, just depends which grass gets watered. Let today be the day we change our approach to the things we do. Approach work, friendships, partnerships, and your personal relationship with yourself with love and see how fast you mind and world starts to change. When we do things that feed our soul instead of our ego the end is no longer in sight. The sacred relationship with yourself will begin to improve, fast…. be sweet to yourself, and don’t be afraid to find your truth. Dig deep and look for the reason you actually are doing the things you do. ______________________ #createthelove #truth #rksolid #motivation #tuesday #train #trainpeloton #traintuesday #transformationtuesday #transformation #abs #run #running #workout #ego #soul

I feel that I’ve become more empathetic/understanding in my years spent in NYC. The truth is… the struggle is real… I don’t know anybody who hasn’t fallen flat on their face at least once here. I’m speaking from experience: when you fall flat on your face here, you don’t just fall, you get trampled over 10 times, kicked in the ribs, and then splashed with 20 buckets of icewater. “WAKE UP” she tells you! It takes a resilient, strong human being to peel themselves back up off the ground after, and find that hustle again. It takes a champion… My city is full of champions. BLESS you NEW YORK CITY. #newyork #hustle #champions

When I started
When I first started on the Peloton bike I had trouble clipping in.  I struggled.  Hubby tried to coach me and I was trying my best but could not clip those shoes in to save my life.
He sort of had to half wear my shoe and clip them in for me and then I put them on while clipped in to the pedal.  I know I know but I’m much better now.
I also struggled clipping out.  A few times I just left the shoes clipped in and went on with my day because my legs were too tired to try and/or I was catching cramps.  OUCH!
After the first 4 rides, 4 days in a row my butt stayed sore even though my husband had a cushion on the seat.  It’s just the nature of the beast.  It gets better as I no longer get sore since I’m riding my regularly  now and I’m 24 rides in (woohoo) but my butt can get numb if I sit too long.
I remedy the problem by standing when that happens.
What kept me interested – FRIENDS
Once I found some of my friends actually owned Peloton, and we started following each other, we would schedule when we would take the same classes either live (which start early in the morning East Coast time) or on-demand (which are available all day long).
That made it very fun for me because we could see each other’s results and it felt like we were together even though we were states away.
They do have a neat feature where you can click on the person’s profile during the ride and click Live Video and actually see the other person riding LIVE.  I did that once with a friend who lives in North Carolina and it was very cool.
It was during a live class.  I thought that was very cool.
The other classes I’ve taken
Besides cycling, I’ve also taken the strength training and tread classes  which are very good.  The strength training tends to last about 10 minutes (at least those are the ones I chose) but they have longer classes.  I just never had time to do more or go longer.
  The tread classes
The tread classes are excellent and what got me back interested in Peloton to begin with.  I typically run on my own treadmill and mirror the class from my iPhone 7 to my Apple TV flat screen so I have the big screen and speaker experience.
Feels like I’m actually in the studio with them.
We do hills, sprint drills, combinations and all sorts of things which really keeps the heart rate up and the fat burning which is what I like.  They even have walking classes for those who need a recovery day or can’t handle all of the pounding from running.
I’ve tried a few of those and believe it or not, those are very challenging too.  As you can imagine they crank up the incline.
So far there hasn’t been 1 instructor or 1 class I didn’t enjoy.  I’ve gotten up and worked out completely tired and not feeling it but once I hear that peppy voice and motivating quotes and words…it’s on.  I fix my attitude and get into it.
What could be better
I honestly can say there aren’t any suggestions or recommendations I have for Peloton at this time to improve upon.  Granted I was having issue connecting my heart rate monitor but found out it was my error not theirs.
It’s a very innovative company and I look forward to some new products and services they come out with.
My rating
As if you could not tell, I give Peloton 10 out of 10 stars.  There are programs for every fitness level which I love, there are various types of programs by music genre and duration which offers up options for people who have the time or have limited time.
They’ve thought of everything.  The instructors are positive, attractive and motivating.  They also shout out people riding in the studio or at home during the live rides which I find extremely thoughtful.
I can’t thank my husband enough for having the vision and thought to purchase this awesome package of equipment and classes which has taken our at-home workout game to the next level.
I enjoy it very much, plan to ride more days on than off and highly recommend you research and consider getting one for yourself.
Perhaps we can ride virtually together in a live or on-demand class and push each other further.  To quote several of the instructors “You ain’t hustlin’ if you ain’t strugglin’”.  Let’s GO!
Are you interested in purchasing a Peloton?
Leave any questions you have that I haven’t answered in comments below.

Fresh Cranberry Sauce
Fresh Cranberry Sauce with White Wine and Orange
This is my mother’s recipe for Fresh Cranberry Sauce. She made it once a year on Christmas Eve, ready to be served up on Christmas Day as an accompaniment to the turkey. I have no idea where she originally found the recipe but it was hand-written on a scrap of paper in the tattered recipe file that I inherited from her so I think it is one that she got from somewhere else rather than made up herself.

Why bother making Cranberry Sauce?
There are lots of jars of very good quality Cranberry Sauce which are available all year around and practically fill the sauce shelf in the supermarket in the run-up to Christmas. So why would you bother to make your own? These are the reasons why I make it – hopefully they will encourage you to give it a try!
It smells of Christmas
For me, Christmas smells of this Cranberry Sauce. Whenever I make it, I am transported back to my childhood and to Christmas Eve. There is something about the fruity tang of the cranberries, combined with white wine, orange and cinnamon that captures the Christmas spirit for me. If you make it, take a big old sniff when you are cooking the cranberries and tell me that I am wrong! Even if you do not have any childhood memories associated with it, making this sauce is a pretty good way to get into the Christmas cooking vibe.

It is not just for turkey (or, in fact, for Christmas)
Cranberry Sauce is the traditional accompaniment to Christmas turkey. However, as someone who cooks a Christmas dinner that has to meet a whole range of dietary choices, I know that it goes pretty well with other things too. I serve both turkey and a vegetarian option, usually some kind of pie, and the Cranberry Sauce goes brilliantly with both. Although my mother made this sauce only for Christmas and never at any other time, I make it fairly often during the winter. It is a staple of Sunday lunch and, as you will see below, any left over sauce can be used as the basis of lots of other dishes.
It is really easy to make and can be made in advance
Making this sauce is really easy. It has only a few ingredients and is very quick to make. You can serve it hot but I think it is better if you allow it cool and thicken and let the flavours develop. Therefore, I generally make it a day in advance which is great if you are preparing a big celebration meal as it is one less thing to do on the day.

It is really versatile and can be used as the basis for lots of other recipes
When I make this Cranberry Sauce, I generally leave the cranberries whole in the finished sauce. However, I know that some people find this a bit off-putting as they are used to sauces like this being smooth. If you prefer it that way, you can blend the sauce so that you get jelly with flecks of cranberry which is more like shop-bought versions.
If you have any Cranberry Sauce left over after your big meal, it will keep in the fridge for several days. It goes very well with cold meats and with vegetarian pies. It is also a brilliant ingredient that can be used to make a number of other recipes. I use it as a basis for my Cranberry Ice Cream and Cranberry Pavlova .
Other festive sauces and accompaniments
Having the right sauces and accompaniments can take a festive meal to the next level. If you are preparing a special festive meal for Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year you might like to try some of my other recipes for drinks, snacks, accompaniments and desserts. They are very easy and are a great way to create a celebratory festive feast!
All the best celebrations start with a few drinks and nibbles. Instead of buying ready-made snacks, why not try making crisp and savoury Cheese Biscuits , Spiced Roasted Nuts or Moroccan-style Dukkah? If you want something a bit more substantial, you could try my Marinated Feta, Smoked Salmon Pate or Butternut Squash Hummus.
To accompany your main course, in addition to this Cranberry Sauce, you might like my Vegetarian Stuffing with Cranberries and Chestnuts and my Bread Sauce.   They really are very simple to make and so much better than shop-bought alternatives.
If you are looking for a vegetarian alternative for your main course, my Mushroom and Chestnut Pies are a really good option. I make these every year for my vegetarian guests and a number of them tend to get eaten by the non-vegetarians!
I have lots of dessert and pudding recipes. Have a look at the Recipe Index to check them all out. Some of my favourite festive alternatives include Cranberry Pavlova, Cranberry Ice Cream, Banoffee Pie, Lime Cheesecake and Rhubarb Roulade.
In my view, any festive celebration is not complete without some warm and fragrant Mince Pies made with home-made vegetarian mincemeat.

Description
This easy make-ahead Fresh Cranberry Sauce with White Wine, Orange and Cinnamon is the taste of Christmas!
Scale 1x2x3x
Ingredients
Zest of one orange
1 cinnamon stick
170 g (6 oz) caster sugar
2 tablespoons white wine
100 ml (4 fl oz) water
225 g (8 oz) fresh cranberries
Instructions
Grate the orange zest into a small pan.
Add the cinnamon stick, sugar, wine and water.  Stir over a low heat until the sugar is dissolved.
Add the cranberries.
Bring to the boil then simmer very gently for eight minutes until the fruit is tender and most of the berries have burst.
According to taste, you can either leave the cranberries intact or blend the sauce with a hand blender or food processor so that it is smooth.
Cover and set aside to cool until ready to serve.  The mixture will thicken as it cools and the flavours will develop nicely.
Notes
The Cranberry Sauce will keep in the fridge for two to three days.
Keywords: Cranberry Sauce, cranberries, Christmas

Amazon, Others Race to Buy Up Renewable Energy
The race to secure electricity deals for power-hungry data centers has tech companies reshaping the renewable-energy market and grappling with a new challenge: how to ensure their investments actually reduce emissions.
Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -0.05% said it planned Wednesday to announce commitments to buy 1.5 gigawatts of production capacity from 14 new solar and wind plants around the world as part of its push to purchase enough renewable energy to cover all of the company’s activities by 2025.
Tech companies are wielding their balance sheets to finance solar, wind and other renewable-energy projects on an unprecedented scale. In some countries, developers say tech companies’ willingness to spend upfront—signing commitments to buy energy at a certain price for long periods—has helped make corporations more important than government subsidies as the main drivers of renewable investment.
Amazon says its new investments will boost its total to 85 utility-scale wind and solar projects globally. Its existing projects include this wind farm in Texas.

Amazon, Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG -0.42% Google, Facebook Inc. FB 0.46% and Microsoft Corp. MSFT -0.09% are four of the top six corporate buyers of publicly disclosed renewable-energy- purchase agreements, accounting for 30%, or 25.7 gigawatts, of the cumulative total from corporations globally, according to the research firm BloombergNEF. Amazon is the largest corporate purchaser world-wide, with other top purchasers including the French oil company TotalEnergies TTE -0.49% SE and AT&T Inc. T -0.45%
“It’s almost like a stampede for clean energy,” said Michael Terrell, director of energy at Google.
The scale of these investments is placing the tech companies under pressure to show that the projects actually add new renewable capacity to the energy grid instead of sucking up pre-existing supply. A thorny issue is whether tech companies’ green-power purchases replace power generated from carbon-emitting plants or simply increase power generation to feed growing global energy consumption. That is important because the companies want to tell consumers and investors that they are helping to reduce absolute carbon output, not just shifting it around.
“Just because you put a clean electron on the grid doesn’t necessarily mean you’re displacing a carbon-based electron,” said Brian Janous, general manager of energy and renewables at Microsoft. Mr. Janous said Microsoft is now analyzing power grids to determine at which locations and times of day additional renewable-energy production would replace the most production from existing fossil-fuel-powered plants to determine where to invest.
Amazon’s latest projects, across seven U.S. states as well as Canada, Finland and Spain, have pushed the firm’s signed commitments to a total of 10 gigawatts of renewable production, the company said. After the new deals, Amazon is the top all-time corporate purchaser of clean energy in the U.S., according to the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, a group of companies that promotes renewable-power procurement. The new plants, which will supply company operations including Amazon’s cloud-services arm, Amazon Web Services, are scheduled to come online in the next one to three years.

Nat Sahlstrom, director of energy at Amazon Web Services, said the company looks for projects where it can be first to set up a commercial template other companies can follow to help jump-start demand. He added that Amazon only selects projects based on whether its purchasing commitments are pivotal to the projects’ viability. “If not for our investments in these projects, they would not have gone forward,” he said.
Google, which said it matched its energy consumption with renewables beginning in 2017, says it now has a tougher goal: aligning its consumption with renewable energy not just annually but hour by hour. That means the company is trying to make sure there is sufficient carbon-free energy on electrical grids where it operates at the times when it is using power, including at night and at times of peak demand.
“I think the evolution is to focus not only on the quantity but also the quality of sourcing,” Mr. Terrell of Google said.
Driving the purchases are skyrocketing data usage and computer processing. In the past decade, growing efficiency has largely offset rising usage, in part as companies shifted from on-premises computer servers to more-efficient cloud providers, according to the International Energy Agency. But while there is more efficiency to tap, according to researchers, it isn’t clear for how much longer, particularly with the rise of 5G networks and as more of the world lives and works online.

“The data-center industry is one of the largest power consumers world-wide,” said Stefan-Jörg Göbel, a senior vice president of wind and solar for the Norwegian energy company Statkraft AS. “They’re reshaping the demand side of the industry just from the pure physics of it.”
Data centers were estimated to account for roughly 1% of global electricity use, according to a 2020 paper in the journal Science.
Retail energy companies compete with local utilities to give U.S. consumers more choice. But in nearly every state where they operate, retailers have charged more than regulated incumbents, meaning you may be paying more for your electricity than your neighbor. Here’s why. Big tech companies say they have built up in-house teams staffed with former deal makers at electrical utilities who can source deals directly with providers, often sidestepping an industry of middlemen and brokers that generally handle power deals. Firms such as Amazon often blanket a country where they have operations with requests for energy projects, according to developers.
“We’ll say, hey, we want to go look at every potential project that could be in development in a country,” Mr. Sahlstrom of Amazon said of his team that seeks out power-purchase agreements, or PPAs.
Developers of wind- and solar-energy projects say demand from big tech has encouraged a rise in demand for PPAs from other corporate buyers. Because the projects require heavy upfront investment that takes years to recoup, banks often won’t finance them—or will give less favorable terms—unless the projects have an anchor purchaser promising to buy most or all of the production, according to developers and energy financiers.
In Spain, where Amazon has committed to buying power from five solar plants, developers say multiple big tech companies are looking for new deals.

Will emissions be reduced when tech companies buy up renewable energy to power data? Join the conversation below.
“We’re talking to all of them,” Martin Scharrer, who leads such negotiations for the renewable-energy producer Encavis AG ECV -1.16% , said of the tech companies. Mr. Scharrer previously struck a deal with Amazon to sell energy from a solar plant outside Seville, Spain.
Facebook said that it reached its goal of buying enough renewable energy to cover its global operations, including data centers, last year but that it is continuing to strike new power deals because its energy use is growing. Facebook’s electricity use rose 39% in 2020, according to its annual sustainability report. “It’s showing that voluntary targets are really moving the market,” said Urvi Parekh, director of renewable energy at Facebook.
Microsoft said it has power-purchase deals that it hasn’t yet announced that will catapult it to near the top of the world’s biggest green-energy buyers. Mr. Janous said his company focuses on shared environmental goals rather than rankings, but added: “We know what the rankings are and, trust me, my boss knows what the rankings are, and any time there’s a new one that comes out, I hear about it.”
