HISTORY ;

Day 3: Candy Hearts

A #hellcheervalentinesweek ficlet in which Miss Chris is the delinquent, for once.

Chrissy sees her locker before Eddie does. Goes stiff as a board beneath the arm he has slung around her shoulders, which shuts him up. Turns off the ol��� conversational spigot entirely as they stop in the middle of the morning crowd and stare.

There are oversized candy hearts glued to the grey metal. Someone has overlaid their faded, pastel messages with Sharpie, though. One letter per heart, spelling S L U T and W H O R E and F R E A K. Because it’s Valentine’s Day, and this school is a cesspit. 

“Fuck me,” he mutters, stepping forward to lean against the locker, all casual like he can’t hear the giggling morons in pastel jumpsuits who’ve clearly been waiting around for Chrissy to find today’s means of torment. 

“It’s fine,” she says, and though her cheeks have gone pink, there’s something flinty and hard in her expression when she nudges him out of the way. “I need my Biology book.” 

“Chrissy…” 

“I said it’s fine. It’s just candy.” 

To prove her point, she scrapes a fingernail across the S in slut, and while some of the sugary substance sticks, most of it dissolves into powder. He takes care of the rest while she retrieves her book, and while the outline of the hearts is still visible when she shuts the door, the cruelty of the message has disappeared.

“Hiiiiii, Chrissy,” trills Kristin McCullough, the bleach-blonde ringleader of the bunch. Jason’s new girl, the new head cheerleader, the psychopath who stepped up to fulfill Chrissy’s prescribed high school role when she involuntarily took a step back. 

Well, sort of involuntarily. The breakdown hadn’t been her fault. The dismantling of her entire life that followed in its wake, though? That was all Chrissy. 

“Kristin,” Chrissy says coolly, then reaches for Eddie’s hand. “C’mon, Eddie.”

“Sure, yeah,” he says, and walks her to class, not fully understanding whatever girl code was just communicated in eyebrow raises and sneers, but knowing that a message was sent all the same. 

Eddie’s so fucking sick of that girl. Kristin’s taken it as her personal mission to make the remainder of Chrissy’s high school experience hell simply because she’s choosing not to conform to some arbitrary, preppy standard any longer. Insults and whispers and pranks and death by a thousand cuts. 

Three months until graduation. Eddie’s counting the hours.

The rest of the day passes without incident, and any weight on Chrissy’s shoulders lifts the moment she steps into the trailer. Technically, she’s not living there, but considering she hasn’t been home in three weeks… yeah. She kind of is. 

They do their homework—she’s as insistent as Wayne that he graduates—and watch a movie before going to bed, where they have sex that’s sweet and slow because it doesn’t have to be furtive and fast. A novelty and a gift, as far as Eddie’s concerned.

The following day, she’s up with the dawn, murmuring something about going for a run into his ear. Okay for some people, he supposes, as he hauls the blanket over his head and sleeps until Chrissy shakes him awake.

Things are already abuzz when they step through a side door and into the hallway. Whispers and titters and oh, God, he's gonna kill Kristin, chick or not, he really is. 

Only, there’s nothing wrong with Chrissy’s locker. The heart residue from the day before, sure, but no sewage dripping out the vents or spoiled milk left to rot over a weekend. 

As it happens, the source of the drama is Kristin herself, who’s weeping openly in front of her own locker, her hand on her heart, while her friends crowd around. 

“You!” Kristin shrieks when she sees Chrissy. “You did this! You and that freak boyfriend!” 

Stepping back, Kristin gestures, and Eddie sees it. A S S H O L E, larger than life, scraped past the paint and into the metal of the locker below. There’s no painting over that sort of damage; they’ll have to replace the lockers.

Everything gets kind of wild after that. Miss Kelly and one of the science teachers are the first on the scene. Though Eddie and Chrissy are interrogated separately, nobody can prove they did anything, despite Kristin’s screeched protests. A search of their bags and lockers turns up nothing, and since Eddie’s stopped bringing weed to school, his van’s clean, too. 

“Why don’t you search Kristin’s locker for candy hearts and Sharpies?” he says at one point, which gets him detention that’s less about what he said and more about Higgins being angry he can’t suspend him for vandalization. 

At last, they’re released with a warning and sent to class. Eddie suffers through his detention after school, and Chrissy waits for him in the van.

“You did it this morning, right?” he asks as he pulls out of the parking lot. “On your run?” 

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” 

“Seriously?” It doesn’t take a genius to figure out; he keeps a sharpened pocketknife in his nightstand, and she has access. The rest is just details.

She looks down at her hands, and she's fighting back a smile. “Eddie, don't be silly. But I am sorry you got detention."

This is one of those hippie schools where they don't do letter grades btw.

Body swap: in theory i love love love it, but in execution it is often stupid. The potential for autonomy issues alone is so good. Like. I need the character to be preoccupied with how the other person is going to feel when they get their body back OR being kind of shitty about it on purpose and setting up the other character for The Horrors when they do get their body back (but then that needs to come to a head!). It's a great way to explore power/powerlessness if one character is physically much smaller/weaker than the other, who is much stronger and tougher. Forced empathy that nobody wants and therefore backfires horribly yes yes. The other fun thing about bodyswaps is the necessity of acting, and then you get to see how the characters see each other, and that often reveals a whole lot about their biases and assumptions. And like. Seeing how others see you is imo often A W F U L so like. Yeah. Yeah yeah yeah.

Unfortunately it's mostly used for silly hijinks, "why didn't u tell me???" bs, and an excuse for "what if we had to fuck. and we were in each others bodies. and we were both boys O.O" and like. yawn. Do better. The potential is sky-high here people, get it together.

Arranged marriage: frustrating. in most fandoms i'm in i just do not buy socially mandated same-sex marriage. Arranged marriage is about property transfer and alliance through future offspring. That's not compatible with same-sex relationships being given the same social capital as straight ones. So as a set up for romance, i don't love it. As angst fodder where you have characters for whom this is like. The worst option? Yes, love it. Especially if they do care about each other but the situation brings out the worst in them. As you can tell I love torturing my faves. But yeah as a set up for romance, because I can't suspend my disbelief as far as worldbuilding for gay shit, and I'm supremely uninterested in hetero romance, not my thing.

Fake identities: hmmmmmmm. I like the concept. Usually the execution is kind of half-assed. I would LOVE a long fic where post-canon Lan Xichen thinks that he's found the re-incarnation of Jin Guangyao or like. Jin Guangyao possessing someone and is determined to be with them but it's either deeply unclear whether this person really is Jin Guangyao to the audience (but could go either way but never comfortably confirmed) OR it's clear to literally everyone else that this is Just Some Guy who is grifting OR it's a ghost or demon of some kind pretending and preying on Lan Xichen's guilt for nefarious purposes, but they can't get Lan Xichen to a) believe them or b) care because like 38 years of solitary confinement have Fucked Him Up Beyond Recognition :D.

But yeah the Potential I see here is like. "I'm stuck pretending to be this person and I have to be convincing but also they were a dick to you and I really like you so uh.... please have every good thing at my hands? oh shit they're back D:" (there's a kdrama called the crowned clown with this premise and it's GREAT especially because when the love interest finds out that the dick husband has been replaced with nice husband she is SO UPSET). Or like "i love you but i know if you knew who i was you would despise me so lemme just pretend to be someone else. maybe someone specific that you do love. this will be fine because it will never come out consequences are for other people" which. How It All Started From False Hopes 🌟

This is a personal story of mine. 🌟And ...

It all started with false hopes. 😔

​One of my high school teachers offered help for me to take an entrance exam. During my last days as a senior (4th year), I was wondering how my future would go. Unsure of what the future holds, whether I will go to college or not. The thoughts of not being able to study gushes like waves at high speeds. But the reality that the moment presents is that I CAN'T (financially). I was overwhelmed by finding all the means and resources that I could use to maximize that time. 💭

I was able to take other entrance examinations to other universities both local and private from the earnings that I was able to collect. And fortunately, I passed. But it wasn't good enough. I haven't considered the transportation expenses as well as the extra money needed for food and internet access. This was one of my early financial constraints. No one was there to support me but myself. I CANNOT ENTER COLLEGE. Tuition fees that need to be settled every semester are costly. The chance of making my dream come true is to pass the entrance examination that my teacher asked me to take, which is also based on the student teacher who observed us at that time. 💸

This mind-blowing thought of going to college, to me at least, is too ideal. I have this idea rushing as I walk the approximate 3-4 km distance from my place to school. I also imagine myself wearing school uniforms from different schools which I took entrance tests. 🚶‍♂️📚

Time Skip: Enter graduation 🎓

The school year ended, but still the mindset that I can no longer enter college is realistic enough that made me lose all the possible means and hopes. Two months have passed after the examination. It is around 5 pm when I decided to walk from my place to somewhere and decided to gaze at the list of passers.

In front of the university admissions building approximately 10 meters, I saw the bulletin board with almost 30-40 pages of paper with names from A to Z.

As I walk, my heart rushes.

The nervousness increased

I browsed at M. Then, surprise. I saw my name. I qualified, I passed. This boosted my motivation to find means to enter college. But realty is too frank to make me realize that it is impossible. And it is the sad truth. 😳

Time flies, someone offered a help. I accepted it. I was able to push through. I gave up my work as a school canteener in the school where I obtained my high school diploma. 🤝

Finally I was able to enter college. I just wanted to finish my degree and uphold the dreams that I have during that time. I also imagined my self to graduate with Latin Honors. But 1st semester of my first year destroyed that dream. Hahaha! I received a grade of 2.75 in English 1. 📚😅

The sole reason is my tardiness - attendance affected my grade in the subject mentioned. The class starts at 7:30 am, and I arrive at 8:01 am. I struggled in academics, due to lack of interest (especially some of the gen ed subjects). I enjoyed the major subjects (physics, chemistry, and earth science). 🕒

Two years … Three years … Four years have passed. Time flies so fast. I felt that the content that I obtained is insufficient for me to become a fine astrophysicist. Since I also loved different learning opportunities outside the classroom. I met various people. I wanna become part of the community that they are in (and it is the science community). 🌌

I suffered a lot, mental, emotional, and intellectual. My math and physics is insufficient. I jumped from high school physics to graduate physics which demands familiarity with (1) Differential equations, (2) Integral Calculus, (3) Trigonometry, (4) College and advanced Algebra, (5) Linear Algebra. 🔢

So far so good, I was able to cope up, Not fully, but familiarity took time. I learned advanced math when I entered grad school. And I’m very thankful to learn so much things from great professors that shaped my view about the values of learning. The essence of passion, perseverance, and determination to chase your dreams. And dream further once you achieve a dream after dream. 💪

Sometimes, dream starts from false hopes. But when you turned that falseness into truth. We can essentially make things possible as long as you live the dream and take appropriate actions to turn it in to reality. Life itself is bounded by choices. It is our choice to become the person who we really wanted to be. This kind of existential crisis defines our very own existence. There should always be a start, there should always be a turning point. This will help you out reach point A to your desired point B. 🛤️

Oh well gotta do some graduate student stuff. (By the way, I got shortlisted for the Ph.D. Astrophysics and Data Science - Artificial Intelligence program), hopefully, they'll reach out and fund my research proposal. 🎓🔭

Luckily, he is kinder to his friends. He is the guy you can call at 1am, the guy who will listen to you and give you some wise advice. f a m i l y At first, there was just a couple of dreamers. The man was a Merrock local, the proud owner of Malibu&Co., a surfing shop. The woman was a coach for the high school swimming team. Before they reached their thirties, they welcomed their first child. A couple of years later, another baby extended the family. That was the perfect portrait: a married couple and two children. Yet, in the year 1996, a third kid arrived. Maverick, named after the main protagonist of that Top Gun movie. Their little surprise, as his mother used to say.

d r e a m e r You will be great, my son. How many times did Maverick hear that sentence when he was just a child? He didn’t feel like he was doing anything amazing. Sure, he learned how to swim quite early. Sure, he enjoyed spending time in the ocean or at the pool more than anything. Sure, he was the only one of his siblings who was showing interest in surfing. To Maverick, he was just enjoying the little pleasures that life was giving him. To his parents, he was promising. As he immersed in the surfing world, Maverick started to change his mind and to believe that he could be great, too. A champion. A pro. Slowly, it became his main goal in life. The ambitious teenager entered in his surfing era, ready to take over the world.

w i n Competition after competition, he made his way into a world he knew nothing about. Luckily, he was not alone. His dad had always been his first supporter and as he started to win more and more contests, he found in his mother a new coach. Perhaps it wasn’t ideal, considering how seriously she took her job. Yet they were a good team and by the age of 22, Maverick made it pro. He was no longer a dreamer. Now he was a champion. The promising athlete he was meant to be. That’s when he decided to move, leaving Merrock and settling in Malibu, embracing his new career and all the opportunities he could get.

u n p r e d i c t a b l e Life on the West Coast could have been pretty if his mother hadn’t followed him. Because she was both his very first coach and some kind of agent, she looked for the best opportunities for her son, tried to lead him on the best path. Without even noticing it, she started to put a lot of pressure on Maverick’s shoulders. At first, he wasn’t aware. His mother just wanted the best for him. She didn’t mean any harm. Yet, a part of him tried to get away from it, willing to do all the stupid things his friends were suggesting just to feel like himself again, just to feel free for a couple of hours. What a fucking mistake. That night, hitting the road on that old scooter and recording their ride seemed funny. The collision wasn’t. Before he even realized what happened, Maverick got sent to the hospital, his left thigh severely injured. The most pessimist part of him thought that he would never be able to walk again without the help of a crutch. The physical therapy was tough, left him hopeless about his future in the professional surfing world. He knew it was over the minute he met the doctor’s gaze. He may be able to recover from the accident but he will never be strong enough to reach the top the way he had before.

l e g a c y As he was still mourning his career, Maverick came back home in Merrock. He was almost 26, had no job anymore, couldn’t surf as much as he wanted to, had no idea on what to do with his life. The year 2022 was the year of the unknown. Little by little, he had to find his footing. As he was getting better, he started to help his father at the shop, surfing at the end of the day when his leg wasn’t too sore. Slowly he moved on from his very first goal. At the beginning of 2023, another role was given to him when his parents decided to leave Merrock and to let him take over the surfing shop.
