Helloo!! I'm brazilian and i'm still learning english so forgive me for any grammar mistakes. I've gotten all endings (i guess- please let me know if i missed anything!) so here's my review of Perfect Love! ♥

I loved this game sooo much! I never played an visual novel with a mean main character and it was just amazing. The trope of ''us'' being the actual villains is very interesting and it made the game super unique! It's also pretty obvious the amount of effort and hard work that's in the game, I was impressed by the quality of it all.

The music and sound effects are pretty good, I loved it all! The artstyle is very pleasing to look at and the black/white/grey contrast with Milo's blue/red eyes are such a nice touch too. I also loved the amount of easter eggs (you couldn't imagine the face I made when I named myself 'Ren') and secret endings/scenes.

Fortunately, when I first played, I knew nothing about the game nor about Milo (which I believe made the experience better since everything turned out to be surprising) and the endings were really good. Through the gameplay, I've encontered one grammar mistake (which I forgot to screenshot it, sorry) and one sprite glitch but nothing that made me annoyed.

After finishing the 8 main endings, I decided it was time to look a little bit on the official Tumblr's page of the VN and that's when I decided to test out all of the easter eggs and that's when I discovered the secret scenes.

So, to summary it all: absolutely 10/10! I can't remember the last time I had so much fun playing a game and being so invested in unlocking all of it's content! I was flabbergasted when I lost all of my endings heh

Please let me know if I missed anything- I'd be more than happy to clear the game entirely.

Hello there! I love reviews. On my other blog I always write recommendations/reviews for other vns, so I'm always open to seeing what people like and dislike about the game. I hope you don't mind that I'm just gonna mash these two asks into one ask.

Thank you! I also think that a lot of vns don't always focus on being the bad guy in the story and those that do I usually enjoy quite a lot! I'm glad you like the quality of it, it was a lot of fighting renpy and it's UI because I have a one sided rivalry with the base renpy UI. I tried to make it look good though I think I maybe should have attempted to redraw some of the sprites for Milo (for like the third time).

For the art style itself, I actually did it in black and white because it was originally for the 2023 yanjam and I wanted to make a style that wouldn't be extremely tiring for me, and I really like lineart so I made everything in black and white (and also because I'm lazy, I say as I animate half of my assets). The red and blue really make it pop at the end since it's one of the few time color is used in the game. I love when people put easter eggs in their game and I know of a lot of yandere vns so I wanted to put in a ton! I'll probably put in even more in the update when I get all of the extra stories done because putting easter eggs like that is very fun.

Having no knowledge of a game is always a good way to be surprised about the premise and I think it definitely was something good in your case too! For the grammer/ sprite errors if you do ever play or remember what they were, please let me know. I'll try to fix it in the next update if possible.

It's always so nice seeing that people like my game though! I tried my hardest to make it a worthwhile experience and considering it's (technically) my first game, it really makes me happy to see that people really like it! Hopefully it doesn't have too much of the first game amatureness that tends to come (nothing wrong with it, but I hopefully have showcased I kind of know what I'm doing, I say, sweating profusely) .

Yup! That is all of the scenes in the game so far. At least that you can access. If you look inside of the code, I actually have two scenes that I put in there. One of them is pretty much a test scene featuring the character from the next game I'm making, and the other is a special scene where you go to Milo's apartment. You can't access those in the main game, but you can play them if you edit the code a bit.

Basically (for those who don't know), all you have to do is put "jump" and then the name of the label afterwards (so for instance if the label is "rabbit" you would put "jump rabbit") after label start in the code. The two scenes that are not accessable in the game are the last two scenes in the script.rpy file just to make it easier for you. (I put a note that says like "#I'm very dedicated to my craft I say as I disect Milo and then beat him with a stick" because I'm sorry Milo, you deserve better)

The Nein as quotes from Polygon’s Unraveled

Because @hit-it-or-crit-it urged me I totally should get around to doing this after our brief discussion on the Nein and Unraveled after my screencap redraw, here it is—

Beau: “Listen to these quotes: ‘All warfare is based on deception,’ ‘If your opponent is of choleric temperament, seek to irritate him,’ ‘Steal their hats.’”

A strong contender: “But do I regret reading the Geneva Conventions? Of course not. Knowledge is its own reward. Could I really call this an Unraveled if I didn’t spend a whole day reading 224 pages of dense legalese for no good reason? Of course I couldn’t.”

Caduceus: “And if you have bugs in your house and you make the conscious decision to WANT those bugs in your house, they aren't pests, they're pets...s.”

A strong contender was: “[authoritatively] And that is no good, is it? [earnest] Is it? I actually have... um, I'm a little confused right now.”

Caleb: “With all the spell-casting and shouting you must do as Dragonborn, who really has time to read all these books? I do. Apparently.”

I absolutely agree that “God has cursed me for my hubris, and my work is never finished.” is absolutely a Caleb quote. I hear you—I hear your questions constantly. However, is it not just the state of wizardry in which you are cursed by God for your hubris? I opted for a more specific Caleb vibe, and that is books.

Fjord: “It's very hard to cuddle with someone when there's an inferiority complex between you.”

Now, I know "But when all hope seemed lost, I had an epiphany. ‘I am going to throw myself into the sea.’" is PEAK Fjord. I even did a quick screenshot redraw for it. But, also, this choice encapsulates WHY Fjord is going to throw himself into the sea—will someone please let Fjord cuddle every single one of his friends? Also, “I fully expect my boss, Tara Long, to put me out of my misery when I stop being useful. That's good management.” and “I know how much it would disappoint my friends if I changed my appearance.” were also strong contenders. Fjord is just, honestly, a pile of BDG quotes.

Jester: “[holding cat] So, here is Zuko, Barbarian class level 63. I love him with all my heart, and he loves me just the same. [gets whacked in the face by cat]”

Folks probably expected the one about cults: “And before you get upset with me saying, ‘Brian, aren’t you just starting a cult?’, look at this question answered by cutegirlcorr! Technically speaking, religions and cults are the same thing!” But, I can never turn down a good Sprinkle joke. And it feels like it better captures Jester’s energy.

Molly: “If I can't be accurate, I sure as hell am gonna be extra.”

A strong contender: “They'll see me as an artistic genius that's right and incomparably handsome.”

Veth: “[exasperated laughter] The Red Bull's wearing off.”

Veth is just the entire video where Brian searches for the hottest Castlevania monster. Just pick any quote out of that video: “[holding up image of Slogra] If you're not attracted to this, you're wrong.”, “That hyena can get it!”, “If someone comes up to me and introduces themselves to me as Duke Mirage, my pants are already off.” But, I feel the exhausted oh shit of this choice better captures Veth outside of her being thirsty for Mr. Minotaur.

Yasha: “When I was a kid, my mom thought I had a nutritional deficit because I kept wanting to eat mushrooms so much, like I only ate mushrooms for a whole week.”

A strong contender: “And finally we are cutting all of the recipes that include monster parts because we all know the true monster is man. [long stare into camera] And cannibalism is frowned upon in New York.” I just felt the chosen more captured the almost dead-pan and strange whimsy Yasha has.

Bonus:

Essek: “Why does no one understand the time break except for me, Brian David Gilbert? Why am I the only scholar in time break studies?”

Strong alternatives are “And if you'll excuse me, I have to go do my dark bidding in these spreadsheets.” and  “That starts in stage one of all villains: you have to be contacted by a future version of yourself.”

Yeza: “Acid man was meant to be a chemist. What's he good for, titrations? [beat] That's a chemistry joke.”

Manga Colouring Tutorial

I put together a manga colouring tutorial. It’s more like a recording of the process of what I usually do, but I hope it can still be useful for some people. I’m not saying my way of doing things is the only way to colour manga. There are numerous methods you can use, I think most of it depends on personal preference. This is just simply what works best for me.

Programs used:

- Adobe Photoshop CC 2015 - Paint Tool Sai - Wacom Intuos Draw (graphic tablet)

It’s perfectly possible to colour without a graphic tablet, but I’m not gonna lie, having one certainly makes life easier. Same can be said about Sai. Doing everyting in Photoshop is possible, but some of Sai’s tools are so good that once you try them you never wanna go back.

I’m not going to go into super detail with my explanation, I don’t think this is the place to teach how to use Photoshop (and Sai). So please ensure you have a basic knowledge of things before you attempt this.

Steps:

I always start with Photoshop. I fix the scan and put on the base colours, but I don’t use a tablet for this. Then I open up Sai and shade with the tablet. Once that’s done I use Photoshop again to change the background and add any effects/filters that I want or find suitable for the image.

Basically, Sai and the tablet is for shading only, everything else is done in Photoshop.

1. Use good quality scan.

I’m not kidding, having good scans means you have to work less on trying to improve the quality before colouring. It’s super helpful. 

2. Fix your scan.

If you want to get rid of the background or speech bubbles, start with that. Do some redrawing if needed. Remove any excess dust and make sure the scan is clean. I usually remove the shading on the skin area as well. Level the image properly and if needed, use Topaz Clean and Topaz Denoise. Basically, fix the scan as if you were attempting a black and white edit.

3. Set your layers up.

Make sure you always group and name them, it’s super helpful when you have to work with 100 or more layers. Also make sure that you make a new layer for everything. Easier to backtrack and correct mistakes.

This is how it looks like at the end:

With one group open:

Lineart layer is always at the top, set to multiply. I always put a layer mask on it and fill that with a mid-toned grey, this is going to make the lines less harsh and overall more pleasing to look at. After that I have the lineart layer locked so that I don’t accidentally paint on top.

Background layer is always at the bottom. While I colour I usually have it filled with a random colour, it’s to make it easier to look at, pure white is very blinding after staring at it for a long time. Then, just like the lineart layer, I lock it to avoid accidents. After the colouring is done, I change the background to whatever I find fitting for the current image.

The colour layers are in between the lineart and the background. As you can see I always have them grouped. I made a screenshot of the “hair group” open so you can see how it looks. Others look the same. At the bottom I have the base colour, above that those are the shading layers. I always use Clipping Mask so that the shading doesn’t flow outside of the base colour.

4. Put on all your base colours.

I usually use the Pen Tool to select the area I want selected, and then I simply fill it in. You can save yourself some time if you remember the general rule that a layer that is on top of another one, is going to hide the one under. So basically you don’t always have to follow the outline if you know that a layer you will make on top will hide the excess anyways. Please watch the video to better understand, it’s hard to explain lol.

5. Do the shading in Sai.

After the base colours are on, open up Sai and shade. Try to place the light source in one corner. What I mean by that is try to decide and keep in mind where the light is coming from, the shades depend on that. For shading I usually use the Marker Tool, the Brush Tool, the Blur Tool, the Eraser Tool and sometimes the Water Colour Tool. In Sai you have loads of settings and options for the brushes and the graphic tablet makes all of it pressure sensitive so you can have very delicate strokes. For highlights I usually set the layer to Luminosity. Another good function of Sai is that you can use Hue/Saturation for the entire layer group and not just one layer. That way it’s easy to fix the colours after you finished shading.

6. Add the remaining extra touches in Photoshop.

After I’m done shading, I fix the background and add effects/textures/etc in Photoshop. Make sure you resize the finished image to Tumblr dimensions and you are done. :)
