I was gonan make a post apologizing for lack of regular art but I feel like jts already clear im sporadic and in and out of it bc chronic pain and circumstances. So for now I'm gonna hibernate, get my health steady again, deal with money issues, and art will happen when it happens.
#i do feel kind of worn down by it. i wish patreon and commissions didn't feel so taxing even with accommodations ive made for myself#maybe it'll feel better in the future when less is going on but rn it#places this barrier of management in front of art that makes it less relieving to do#cause there's always a part of my brain reminding me it needs to serve a purpose and needs to pay off in some way#which isn’t a new feeling for artists obviously. maybe doing it all since hs js also why it's tiring. and patreon changjng the way it does#working part time now too. idk if maybe id like to step back from it#it's abnormal that i worked taht hard and it did help me get out from my parents and stay out. but im also tired ect#idw let people down by not being able to keep up with a self imposed expectation or#be irresponsible and remove sources of income for myself. redbubble inprnt and patreon all suck in ways that bother me hugely#i only really enjoy itch.io at the minute#not to say anything bad abt patrons or commission clients you've all been excessively kind and patient and understanding always#i wish i could make them better i feel like there's no way how it is at the minute is of value compared to my output as an older teen#but yknow. self imposed worry. im just worn out and id like to just make things without the management and the fretting and the#i havent made a comic post for patreon in ages or this or this i havent made a speedpaint or a song or#yadda yadda lmao#sorry for the impromptu ramble#this isnt to say id never do commissions or a store or anything again or i want to not make money off art#god knows i will need to be grinding out comms once im well again but ex#i feel like im getting less and less able to manage it and then putting out less and less#and hoping ill somehow get very healthy and active again one day and make it worth the wait yknow.#it's not a feeling i want my art to carry in me.#part of me and the parent in my brain is saying it'd be selfish to give up income but the rest is like#that's cruel. i want to feel good and healthy

how does one get noticed as an artist? I have multiple platforms for my art like DA, Tumblr, and Ko-Fi, but it feels like everything gets drowned out by the sheer multitude of better artists. which, ya know, is kinda sucky bc my comm slots have been collecting dust for a month (and never mind I'm in a rough financial spot). I'm told my stuff is good, but that's from my small niche of friends, so it just feels obligatory :/
Hmm. This is really difficult to answer considering every social media platform works differently. Algorithms are constantly changing, so it makes it even more difficult to catch on. Posting everyday gets you the most engagement, and even with hundreds or thousands of followers, only half of them will see your posts because you arent posting regularly. ill insert a readmore.
I cant tell you how this all works because I refuse to learn how it works. Ive always just posted whenever I wanted, posted whatever I wanted, and have been doing so for many years. But I have found several things that have gotten me noticed have contributed to my growth. Before that, a really great art youtuber, Kelsey Rodriguez, does a really good job at giving advice regarding growing on social media as an artist and how to the run the business and growth side while managing the art, so Id check those out.
having a larger project, like a comic.
having a comic, and it doesnt have to be a webtoon or published on a comic hosting site, not only forces you to improve in your art by constantly drawing and experimenting, it also gives you something to post regularly. Posting regularly is important, and even if its only once or twice a week, the crucial part is that its consistent. this is more likely to give your followers content to look at, but it can attract people who relate or enjoy your comic, and can help solidify an audience. Ive done two comics so far, and my first one allowed me to understand how to draw them, and my second one allowed me to understand how to have fun with them. Both times I continued to grow an audience who enjoyed not only the comic, but myself and my other art.
fanart (unfortunately)
fanart often gets more views than original art, which is unfortunate because lots of people have awesome ocs and original art that should be noticed. but people like having context and lore to whatever theyre seeing, and if its connected to something they already know, it can bring them more joy than to look at something theyre unfamiliar with. While i dont draw fanart as much as I used to, drawing it regularly (i used to do a lot of anime fanart back in hs), can help build you an audience of people who enjoy the same media as you! it can help boost you even more if you draw fanart for smaller bands, shows, books, etc, because tagging creators or staff who have worked on those media can sometimes get them to like and share the post as well!
other artist interaction
you need to build relationships with other artists. I have to admit this has been difficult with me, but if you have artist friends online who also have an audience, you can all work together to introduce your audience to each others' art. many of my mutuals have similar followers, and this is because we all hype each other up, share each others art, and tell people about each others art. sometimes all it takes is for one mutual to share your art for you to gain an influx of hundreds of followers.
Overall, I want to encourage you to continue drawing. Commissions are not the end all be all of your value; you need to build an audience, build experience, and build consistency before you come to that point where people will commission you. Its a difficult reality, screaming into the void, but once you realize youre not the only one, you start to build connections and community with other artists for support.
I wish u the best of luck!

Read On Ao3
@gumnut-logic again, thankees for all your help with this as always and my constant poking :D <3
The sun was setting somewhere on the distant skyline, bathing the balcony in a gold glow and warming Lucy’s skin as she reclined back on the lounger. It was good to get out in the fresh air, or at least the open air. Being in the city still tasted wrong and foreign after the purity of the Island.
Part of her wished she was there now, able to talk to Sally face to face rather than across the bluish tint of the hologram.
“The clinical records got emailed across,” Sally was confirming as Lucy watched the horizon, “I’m not concerned about Tanusha’s after care, but Kyrano may need a longer term program.”
Lucy snorted and shook her head, knowing that Kyrano had a different plan for his recovery. The man had been saying as much since that morning, not even twenty-four hours after his injury and he had been planning where he would be off to next.
“He says he’s not coming back to the Island yet. That he wants to get away from things and get back to a proper balance.”
Across the comm Sally shrugged, “It’s what he did after Onaha died, are you surprised that this is any different?”
The older woman had a point, still Kyrano was taking Jeff’s disappearance personally, like he was the one to blame despite them all knowing better. Anger and frustration had taken over the usually calm man’s personality leaving him a shadow of his former self. Lucy knew the time away in Malaysia would be what he needed, a chance to reset himself and find that balance once more.
“I worry he’ll go after his brother again.” She admitted quietly, “That if I let him go and something happens to him, it will be down to me for letting him go.”
“Would Lee go with him?” Sally suggested, nodding in quiet agreement, “I know he isn’t the most like Kyrano, but maybe it’s what they both could do with?”
She hadn’t considered it, and at the initial suggestion could have scoffed at the idea of her brother going along to some quiet reflective sanctuary.
Lee was still uptight though, snapping at everything and everyone, maybe some space away from home and a chance to grieve away from his family was just what he needed.
“He snapped at Val for talking a certain way today,” Sally added, “Luce, he hasn’t been this bad since Val’s accident. I tried talking to him but he just won’t have any of it, sooner or later something is going to give.”
She sighed and nodded, not sure she was quite up to the task herself, “Do you think you could suggest it?” She asked hopefully, “Test the water? Being out here and getting ready for the passing out on Saturday… I wouldn’t say I was in the best place to bring it up.”
“Of course dear, I’ll get onto it later.” Sally smiled, briefly before her face fell to concern, “How are things coming together for the parade? Scott said something about there only being a small number this year?”
Lucy shrugged, the final details had been discussed on another call earlier in the day. It wasn’t something she had been looking forward to in the last few weeks. Passing out was Jeff’s department, the big brain behind IR, the one to give the speech and award the badges to their newest team members. He had always made a point of writing the speech himself, tweaking and altering it right up until the moment before he gave it, always going to her for suggestions. This one was meant to be even more special.
This one a father was meant to present the badge to his eldest son.
Instead it would be Lucy herself, the one that had always been happily, quiet in the background. She would still be just as honoured and proud to present the badge to Scott, but both would know who was meant to give the salute that day.
“I think a few dropped for various reasons,” she murmured, “The recruitment and training team are looking through it, they mentioned something about the change in the GDF recruitment a few years ago being part of it.”
“Nothing to be over concerned about then?” Sally nodded, “The GDF recruitment was always a fallback for those that dropped out. You and I both know it.”
Lucy had to smile, “Jeff always said, ridiculously high achievers only. Should have put that on the prospectus.”
“We can’t exactly trust anyone else with what we do,” Sally sighed, “It’s a hard business.”
She only had to think about the last few weeks to be able to agree.
“Is everything in place there to transfer lead command to Beta crew?” She asked, knowing Sally had the art of communications down to a T, even if it weren’t her preferred field.
“All organised,” Sally nodded with a smile, “The three of us will be at Roca to meet you on the day.”
“...isn’t exactly a good time to tell her-- shit.”
She turned at Virgil’s voice as he hesitated in the doorway to the balcony, raising an eyebrow at him in question.
“I’ll call you back, Sally.” She murmured, not taking her gaze from her dark haired son as he turned to head back inside.
“Virgil.” She called after him, “Out here please.”
His shoulders fell and she was sure she could hear the curses in his head out loud.
“I’ll talk to you later, Alice.”
Swinging her legs around on the lounger, she sat up and patted the cushion next to her, “Come sit kiddo.”
His sigh was heavy as he sunk down next to her, rolling his eyes as he did so.
“How’s Alice?”
His shrug was non committal, all too hopeful that he could brush her off and escape the conversation.
“She’s fine, was just filling me in on what I’ve missed this week.”
Lucy didn’t buy it. She had never gotten a chance to catch up with him after the alleged night filled with school work she had thought he had been on top of. Virgil was diligent in his studies, he had a schedule she knew he kept to with slots in the day spaced for food and relaxation.
There definitely wasn’t any night time studying on that schedule. The young man valued sleep too much.
“I thought she wasn’t the type of girl to keep you up at all hours of the night,” She nodded, “So what’s been stopping you from sleeping?”
He shrugged again, avoiding her as she tilted her head to look at him. It wasn’t like him to be so distant from her, so unwilling to discuss anything especially when something was clearly bothering him.
She wondered if it was grief that was keeping him up at night.
“I just want to help, kid,” She murmured, reaching out to take his hand, “If anything’s too much for you, you can tell me. If college is too hard, or you’re just not cop--”
He shook his head, a small smile gracing his mouth as he looked across to her, “It’s not that Mom.”
Holding his gaze, she frowned hard at him. If it wasn’t college and it wasn’t grief, she wasn’t sure where to go next. He didn’t have any romantic partners that she was aware of.
Unless…
“You haven’t fallen out with Alice have you?”
He looked away suddenly, shaking his head in a dead giveaway, “No, not really.”
Like his father, Virgil had always been a terrible liar.
Lucy was glad she’d had a chance to catch up on some of the IR reports handed over to her that week.
“You know she’s been offered a place on the next intake of engineers?”
His nod was quick as he pursed his lips, “She’d mentioned that she had applied. Wasn’t sure she’d got on it yet.”
Lucy shrugged, “I got sent through the prospective successful applicants, the academic board are just waiting on me to sign them off.”
The way his eyes snapped up to her, quick and wide and full of a sudden panic she hadn’t expected.
Oh.
“I only had chance to look at the astronauts and engineers this morning,” She told him, pretending not to watch his reaction, “They’re always the shortest lists.”
It was a lie, she always went for the Basic Training list first, eager to complete the most thorough of checks on those that hope to one day work in the field as an IR operative.
He sifted next to her, so clearly uncomfortable and not at his usual ease. It didn’t take much guess work to try and figure out just what had him so pent up.
Tilting her head she eyes him, “Any idea who might have applied for the basic training program? The board said there was a good selection this year.”
He still wouldn’t look at her as he shrugged, hands fiddling with the seam of the cushion.
“Please don’t be mad.”
She was quick to shake her head, mad was anything but the issue. When she had been presented with the list of thirty-eight students that had the qualifications to join IR, only one had been flagged up as undergoing further investigations before being offered a place on the course.
Augustus Taylor.
It was only that she had seen Virgil’s newly cropped hair the previous evening that had allowed her to place the man in the ID photo. Cleverly photoshopped, chin more rounded, eye colour just off in the wrong tone of brown, and so subtle that the initial team hadn’t caught on to the edited image.
“I’m not mad Kiddo,” She frowned, reaching out to his arm, “I mean… I want to know why, but I’m not mad.”
He sighed and leant into her touch, hesitating for a long moment before he shook his head and everything came tumbling out, “I didn’t want it to be on the basis of who I am. Just because I’m a Tracy I shouldn’t have automatic rights to get onto the program, especially if…”
He trailed off suddenly, pulling away as he sat straight again, eyes going to the deepening orange glow on the horizon.
“If?” Lucy prompted gently, slipping her arm around his broad shoulders.
Sniffing, he shook his head, “I wasn’t sure I’d be good enough for the tests to get in. I didn’t want to disappoint you if I screwed them up.”
She had more faith in him than that. All her boys had a certain degree of common sense, of logic and Virgil the most caring nature of them all. Maybe she was biased, but she knew he needn’t have worried.
“You really think any of you boys could disappoint me?”
He swallowed as he shrugged, “Scott gets his badge next week.”
Lucy shrugged in return, “And what has that got to do with you getting on to the program? Have I not told you before? You are not your brothers. You are entitled to your own path in life with your own successes and failures that are of no comparison to anyone else's.”
Looking down, he nodded, cheeks a deepening colour of read as he smiled a little, ‘Yeah, I remember.”
She turned to him, taking both of his hands in hers and waiting until she knew she had his full attention. He needed to hear her words for exactly what they were, without them being filtered through the doubt that had clearly settled in his mind.
“If this is what you want to do, then you go for it son. If you change your mind or it goes wrong or it’s harder than you anticipated nobody is going to be disappointed. You do this for you, okay?”
Taking him in her arms as he sniffled again, she hugged him tight, “We’ll always be proud of you kid, don’t forget that.”

Do you enjoy watching birth vlogs? I’ve never watched this particular kind of vlog. I’ve seen photo stories of births on Facebook though and while I find women fucking metal for going through childbirth, I’m rather squeamish and I feel like crying when I see the process :((( Would you rather paint on canvas or wood? I’d...rather not paint at all. I’m really not artistic. What regret keeps coming back to haunt you daily? I have this one class that I regret taking this semester just because there were two available sections, and I still ended up in the section with the shittier professor. It’s a pain in my ass every Wednesday and I can’t wait to give a review for this teacher. Do you miss someone? Always, but I’m on depression break at the moment and I just want to be alone for 7 days. If you could cure yourself of one allergy, what would it be? I don’t have any.
Do you know anyone else with your name? I know two people. When I was still applying for AIESEC, I was surprised that there was a sudden abundance of Robyns haha. There’s never any Robyns anywhere. Have you felt like the main character in a book was you? I’m not a big reader, so no. Which country's flag is your favorite? Nepal just because it went ‘fuck it’ on how flags traditionally should look like. What would you be most afraid of happening if you were to visit Africa? Getting arrested??? I’m down for anything but I can’t get in trouble, because I’m a big fucking baby when it comes to crime lmaooooo. Where are you tempted to move to sometimes? Canada. Have you ever hiked a mountain? Nope, but would love to someday. Who seems like they have the perfect life? People who graduate summa cum laude while juggling multiple orgs and have both a tight-knit family and a love life??? How???????? Do you ever take pictures of negative moments? I have. I still have them on my phone.  I don’t see the point of taking nor keeping them if they just make me upset every time I see them but since I have a photo hoarding problem, I can’t bring myself to get rid of them. Do you think it would be a good idea to post photos of negative moments as well as positive? It’s different for everyone. Some might want to capture their negative times to remind them that they went through it and they’re a stronger person now. Some might prefer to block negative stuff from their mind as soon as they overcome it. I’m the latter. What time zone are you in? Idk how the format is...but I use the Hong Kong one. Would you ever post a picture of yourself crying on social media? No. ^Why or why not? It’s just something that would make me feel uncomfortable. I don’t even like crying in front of people other than Gab, so even more would I not want something permanent like a photo to capture me crying. Do you like dark blue jeggings or light blue jeggings better? Light blue seems to be the trend recently. What color is the rim of your whiteboard? I don’t own one. Do you have trouble staying organized? I’m generally organized, but there are certain things that I can never seem to maintain, yes; like I can never keep my closet organized. And my school bag. What was the last thing you cried about? I had a short breakdown in the car last Friday because I had to usher for an event and run errands all day while the weather was RIDICULOUSLY humid and I could feel the sweat seeping in my pants for 8 whole hours, and then when Gabie came to visit she didn’t do the one thing I asked her to do. I exploded by the end of the day and gave myself ample time to cry. Funny how the universe works though - in the middle of my episode, the known dogs that roam in my college skipped over to my car. I had some leftover lunch so I fed them and I instantly felt better. Have you ever held a newborn baby? I have, but he started squirming and crying and I almost dropped him onto the ground. I was 9 and I was assigned to watch over the baby. I’ve never held an infant since. Do you know anyone who has twins? Yes. I was surprised to see my classmate from comm research posting photos of her and her twin on Facebook. Would you rather look older or younger than your age? Younger, and that’s how it works so I’m satisfied.  Related story: I went to get my driver’s license renewed a couple of weeks ago. The guy in charge made me fill up a bunch of forms and made me do unnecessary shit in the process (i.e. made me go ACROSS THE MALL to have my ID xeroxed) because he thought I was a student driver and that I was getting my license for the first time. I would have gotten my license SO MUCH QUICKER, but he gave me the process meant for student permits. I was annoyed, but in the end 1) he apologized profusely, and 2) I just took it to mean I look much younger than 21 which I can be happy about. Where do you buy calendars from? I don’t buy calendars because I already have one on my laptop and phone. Do you shop at the dollar store often? We don’t have dollar stores. We don’t even use dollars. What does your name rhyme with? Bitchin’. Are you following in the career path of any family members? As far as I know, no. I think I’m the first to take up journalism. My maternal grandfather’s side are all very...lawyerish and diplomat-ish though, and I guess that’s kind of related to journ and the fact that I’m taking up history, psychology, and political science courses. Have you ever met anyone who talks like a robot? THAT PROF I TALKED ABOUT A FEW QUESTIONS AGO URGH. He’s probably like 25 but I wish he would resign. He’s awful. What is your favorite country in Europe? I don’t have one. Probably one with a lot of history in it. Name something unique about your town. It has a lower and upper part, haha. I’ve never heard anyone else talk about their province and if they live in the lower/upper part of it. Who does all the chores in your home? My mom. She prefers it that way. Do you feel you missed out on a lot as a kid? I believe so. I was exposed to a lot of nasty shit, so while I was pretty privileged and went to a good school, had all the cool toys, and kept up to date with the cool TV shows, I had to grow up earlier than the kids around me. What is your best kept secret (or one big secret you have right now)? Kinda the point of having a secret. Do you have anyone you can tell your secrets to? I know I can trust my friends, but I’m generally most comfortable telling my girlfriend. ^If so, who? ^ Who was that best friend you ever had? If this question was meant to be in past tense, then it would be Sofie. I really, really hope she’s doing well and that she’s happy where she is. Do people appreciate you and accept you for who you are? I hope they do? What color is your laptop? Silver. What class would you like to repeat over again just for fun? Any art studies and history class I’ve taken. I also had this one class where all we did was have oral presentations/monologues, and it was so much fun, even for an introvert. Passed that class like a breeze. It helped that I had an amazing professor who believed in each of us and knew that we all had stories to tell and share. What are five careers you think you'd be good at? Researcher, analyst...anything that entals organization and data, really. Are you thriving in your life right now? We’re all thriving. We all just have our own paces. :) Who do you have moral support from? College friends, Angela, and Gabie. Who encourages you to go after your dreams? There’s this shirt that says “I work hard so my dog can have a better life,” and that pretty much hits the nail on the head. Do you have people in your family who want you dead? Wow. List all the antiques you have in your room. None. What Bratz doll resembles you the most? I’m not sure about resembles because I guarantee you no human being looks like a Bratz doll, but Jade had always resonated with me. She always seemed like the spunkiest one out of the four. Do you have a walk-in closet? No, I’m not really interested in one. What was the last thing you ate? Krispy Kreme doughnut with Nutella filling. What would you do to save money for your wedding? Work my ass off. I absolutely need to have my dream wedding. Have you ever been manipulated, lied to, abused, or controlled? Sure. Are you against plagiarism? ...Aren’t we all?

Fake Dating
"Captain, you're doing a great job." Brian's voice crackled through the comms. "Arkady, could you stop sounding like you're about to divorce her?"
Brian was definitely exaggerating. Arkady had talked to Sana like she always had, and that usually worked - this was a new con for the two of them
Despite her silent wish for him to stop, Brian continued speaking as Arkady and Sana weaved their way through the crowd of the art gallery. "I didn't expect she'd do a better acting job than you."
Arkady scowled and bent her head down while pretending to fiddle with her tie, tilting the mic closer to her mouth to mutter. "Why do we have to pretend to be married again?"
Instead of Brian, Violet replied. "The gallery opening's for married couples only and you two had a pair of IDs with the same last name - is that head injury from last week bothering you? You're the one that put together the information on this event."
Great, she sounded genuinely concerned. Arkady smoothed a smile over her face as Sana frowned at her, leading Arkady by the arm towards a corner of the room.
"It was a rhetorical question, Liu," Arkady said through gritted teeth. She was looking forward to getting Brian and Violet clean IDs already so they could pretend to be a couple at some stupid fancy event and see how they'd like it. Except they'd probably have something intelligent-sounding to say about the giant painting Arkady had let herself be led to - a splotch of red paint in the center of a pitch black canvas - and how it was a part of so-and-so movement. Seemed like the kind of random thing they'd know. Nerds.
Instead, Arkady glanced at it for a hot second and came up with a bunch of bullshit, because it was either pretend to be interested with the art or pretend to be besotted with Sana, and the former was way less weird.
Sex, because everyone loved relating art to fucking and it was Valentine's Day. A statement on war, that single red light in darkness that told you a pulse laser was about to go off. Oooh, she could always go for the classic-
"Katie, what do you say we stop replying to comms tonight, hmm?" Sana said, passing her glass of champagne she must have picked up from one of the many waiters pacing through the room.
Arkady sighed and took a sip of her drink. Annoyingly smooth-tasting. She had been kind of obvious while snapping at Violet, but people talking over their comms was more of an etiquette breach than a cause for suspicion. "Fine."
"Does yours also always have to be available all the time?" A tall red-headed man stepped up to the two of them, a wide grin on his pale, freckled face. He stretched out a hand to Sana. "Luke Patterson."
"Jessica Nair," said Sana, shaking hands with Luke and smiling at Arkady. "And yes, you'd think I'd be used to it after 2 years with her."
Arkady raised her eyebrows at her. Was Sana really using this as an opportunity to complain about her tendency to keep talking on the comms? Well, Sana hated the whole pretending thing, so whatever made it work for her.
Luke let out a chuckle. "Tell me about it. Mine's a lawyer, which basically means I have to book him by the hour and even then it's calls, calls, calls."
Arkady looked him over as discretely as she could. No sign of a concealed weapon. Could be a normal guy bonding with a stranger about busy partners, but she was only seeing him from one angle. Nothing ruled out yet.
"You know, I didn't hear you complaining when all those calls got us that vacation house over on Katania." Another man walked up, shaking his head at Luke. His dull grey three-piece suit screamed more business than fancy party.
He looked weirdly familiar to Arkady, which was worrying. This wasn't really the kind of social circle anyone she knew would find themselves in. She stole glances at him, pretending to be occupied with her drink while they kept talking.
Black hair in a short ponytail, thick-rimmed glasses that were either for style or some other functionality, any lawyer with his kind of money would have fixed his eyes long ago. Sana herself was wearing a pair of glasses with a camera for the others to comb through the footage, and kept wrinkling her nose in discomfort every ten minutes or so. It was kind of funny.
"It is a lovely house," Luke nodded in acknowledgement. "But I'd appreciate it more if my husband would take time off to go there with me."
"Your husband certainly wishes he could," the man smiled, "Now will you stop complaining about me and let me introduce myself to this poor couple you've troubled?"
Luke took a gulp from his own drink, gesturing for his husband to go on. The man shook hands with Sana, and suddenly Violet's voice burst through the comms. "Oh no no no no. I think it's okay, though?"
Arkady's face remained composed effortlessly as she shook hands with Luke's husband, while Violet's voice went out of range of the cockpit comms. What the hell was she freaking out about now? "Katie Nair."
"Ben Liu." He smiled. "Again, sorry about Luke."
"Well, it all kind of started with my wife complaining about me," said Arkady, mock glaring at Sana, her mind going into overdrive. The last name and his face alone might have done it, but Violet's little freakout ensured the thought was there now, and wouldn't go away. "So really, I'm sorry."
“It’s that only child syndrome, always focusing on myself.” Arkady let out short laugh, ignoring the quick questioning look Sana shot at her. Might as well risk it if Violet wasn’t going to enlighten them. “Do you have any siblings, Ben?”
"No, I'm afraid I'm an only child too."
"He isn't lying." Violet's voice returned, sounding strained. "He has a cousin."
