What does that mean?

How are they different from each other?

I'm new to the fandom and I don't have much idea about that stuff, so I would love if someone could explain more to me.

hi! don’t worry, i only figured the terminology out at the tail-end of 2023, so you’re good!

this all relates to sex dynamics, or put simply, who tops and who bottoms. generally in the eastern fandom, the character mentioned first in a ship name tops, and the following character bottoms (hence why you might see people describe their ships with the terms “left” and “right”!). however, within the western fandom, the ship name “satosugu” is an umbrella term of sorts (also called stsg). to differentiate between sex dynamic preferences, we have subfandoms! people who like satosugu (sometimes called stsgists) would either call themselves gego (夏五, or getogojo) or goge (五夏, or gojogeto). there are people who like switching dynamics, too (gegoge—夏五夏 or gogego—五夏五). some stsgists don’t even bother with terms at all! and that’s really it!

though satosugu is the general ship name, occasionally people do use “sugusato” or sgst to show their preferences. also, within the eastern fandom, geto and gojo have numbers associated with them because of the kanji characters in their names. geto is 72 because the character in his name (夏) is pronounced “natsu.” the “na-“ in 72 comes from “nana(tsu)” (七つ), meaning 7, and “-tsu,” which sounds like “two” in english. gojo is 5 because the character in his name (五) is pronounced “go” and translates to 5. thus, geto is 72 and gojo is 5—725 and 572 are also ship preferences! so are the terms “natsugo” or “gonatsu”!

this (夏) character in geto’s name also translates to the word “summer,” so you might see variations of the terms “summerfive” or “fivesummers” as ship preferences! there are also the colors black and white, which are pretty self-explanatory—🖤🤍 and 🤍🖤, or ▪️▫️ and▫️▪️, or any other variation of emojis. you might also see yellow and blue emojis; yellow is geto’s usual designated color in official art and merch, and gojo’s is almost always blue, so you might see 💛💙 or 💙💛.

usually, the character who tops also leads, but leading (and dominating and giving) is not synonymous to topping. the same goes for bottoming. the ship preference name always refers to who tops and bottoms, regardless of how it happens. of course, topping and bottoming mean nothing to their characters (and they don’t determine your identity in real life, either), they are just preferences, but there are the typical overlapping interpretations of characterization when it comes to each stsg subfandom. i recommend looking them up on either twitter or tumblr to see for yourself!

whenever i refer to them as satosugu, it’s usually because i’m talking about them in a non-sexual way. sometimes, i use satosugu instead of “geto and gojo” to refer to their canon character dynamics, just for the sake of convenience. (i try to be as objective as i can when i’m doing these types of analyses!) personally, i like top!geto and bottom!gojo, mainly fixed. whenever i refer to them as gego, it’s usually because i’m talking about them in a sexual way or it’s of an implied sexual nature. sometimes, i refer to them as gego just because i can! this is headcanon territory! it’s all fun!
