Q and A: The sound of your voice could help fight Covid-19
A recording of a cough, the noise of a person’s breathing or even the sound of their voice could be used to help diagnose patients with Covid-19 in the future, according to Professor Cecilia Mascolo, an expert in mobile health at data analysis at the University of Cambridge, UK.
Prof. Mascolo has developed a sound-collecting app to help train artificial intelligence to detect the tell-tale sounds of coronavirus infection. Created as part of a project called EAR, she hopes it might eventually lead to new ways of diagnosing respiratory diseases and help in the global fight against coronavirus.
Why are noises important when it comes to disease?
The human body makes noises all of the time. Our heart, lungs and digestive system all make noises and they can tell us a lot. Doctors have used these to help them diagnose diseases for a long time. Most people are familiar with the stethoscope around a doctor’s neck for listening to a patient’s heart and lungs. But this technique – auscultation – has almost completely gone from practice in cardiology as it has been replaced by echo-imaging that is done by machine.
How can machines help?
The technique of listening to the body is actually very difficult for humans to acquire without a lot of training, but machines are much better at it. Artificial intelligence technologies like machine learning can identify features or patterns in a sound that the human ear cannot. They can also “listen” to sounds that are beyond human hearing – microphones can pick up a lot of noise that our ears cannot. Ultrasound, for example, is already used a lot for diagnostics, but unlike an ultrasound scan that relies upon sound waves bouncing back to a microphone, we (on the EAR project) are just listening to those produced by the body.
We are not the first people to try to automate listening to the body in this way. But the main problem is there is not a lot of large data sets to train machine learning algorithms to do this effectively, so that is something our project is trying to collect.
Professor Cecilia Mascolo at the University of Cambridge, UK, hopes her coronavirus sounds app could provide the data needed to build a quick and cheap Covid-19 screening test in the future. Image credit – Salvatore Scellato
Is this what led you to build the Covid-19 Sounds app?
Our project actually started in October before the coronavirus outbreak started. The first thing we were trying was to look at cardiovascular sounds, but when the coronavirus started spreading, we decided to build an application that would gather data about it instead. We are hoping to use machine learning to identify certain characteristics that could be used to diagnose someone with a Covid-19 infection.
What information are you collecting?
We have a website (which went live at the start of April) and an Android app (launched a few weeks later) that people can download. We then ask them some basic medical questions, along with whether they have been tested and diagnosed with Covid-19. We also ask them if they have any symptoms. They then record themselves breathing, speaking and coughing.
What does Covid-19 sound like?
It is still too early for us to have a definite answer as we are just starting to collect the data, but there have been some research papers that indicate the cough that comes with Covid-19 has some specific features – it has been described as being a dry cough (with some specific distinguishing features that allow it to be identified). Having spoken to doctors who are treating people (Covid-19 patients) in hospitals, there may be some changes to their voice, their patterns of breathing or the way they catch their breath as they talk like they are exhausted. We are looking at all of these things by asking participants to record themselves breathing and reading sentences out loud.
Can your app help with the global response to coronavirus?
The machine learning (algorithm) will analyse the recordings we collect to see if it can spot anything different in the voice, cough and breathing of people who have coronavirus. If we do find something, then that could be used to create a diagnostic tool.
How might that work?
For cardiovascular disease we checked with an iPhone on the heart in different positions and found the microphone was enough to pick up the sound of the valves as it pumps blood (and so could be enough for respiratory diseases too). If the machine learning algorithm learns to distinguish Covid-19 patients from their cough, for example, it might be also be possible to record a cough or their voice on their phone. Then the algorithm can say whether someone has a cough like those we have classified as having the disease. There might need to be a second line of diagnostic test after that to confirm, but it could be a cheap and quick (screening) test.
‘Having spoken to doctors who are treating people (Covid-19 patients) in hospitals, there may be some changes to their voice, their patterns of breathing or the way they catch their breath.’
Prof. Cecilia Mascolo, University of Cambridge, UK
How many people contributed so far?
We had 3,000 in the first three days from the website alone before the Android app went live and that number is growing. But to be useful we are going to need tens of thousands of people taking part. So far, we have less than 50 people who have said they have tested positive for coronavirus. We need more positives. We are trying to get the app into hospitals to reach positive patients in triage sites.
What challenges have you faced?
We have had to be very clear with people that this is not a diagnostic tool at the moment. We are not giving them a result from the recordings they are giving us, it is just for data collection so we can analyse it and hopefully build something later. We are also having to be very careful with the data we collect as it is a lot of personal information and recordings of people’s voices. While we want to make the data public at some point in the future, we will have to ensure it is anonymised.
The other major hurdle has been with getting the apps published. Google restricted who could publish apps to do with Covid-19 to avoid misinformation, but we argued ours is helping in the global fight (and came from a reputable source) so they reviewed it and allowed it to go live. The app will also allow us to follow up by asking users every three days for updates so we can see how their condition progresses. We are also hoping to develop an app for iOS soon too, but we were able to do one quicker for Android.
Is there a danger your analysis will come too late for Covid-19?
It is definitely going to take some time, but there are some countries that are quite a bit behind. There is also talk of the virus coming in waves. We don’t know how successful lockdown will be and when it will end, so we are hoping our research will be useful for these later stages.
Will this research be useful after Covid-19?
There is a chance the data we are collecting now could also identify diagnostic sounds for other conditions such as asthma. We don’t know yet. Our big vision though is for machine learning algorithms to be linked to wearable devices and smartphones so it can automate the diagnosis of disease through sound. Most of us might have a doctor listen to our body’s sounds periodically, but what happens if you have something that can listen to you continuously. It could be a new form of diagnostic. We just have to listen to our bodies more.
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity and length.
The research in this article was funded by the EU’s European Research Council. If you liked this article, please consider sharing it on social media.

Technically, yes, movie box is illegal. You are streaming a movie/tv show without the original owner's permission. MovieBox does not have the rights to show owner's copyrighted material. As for getting caught, however, the chances are slim to none.
I needed to assemble this list since Showbox recently got shut down forever. Showbox APK was among the most extensively utilized streaming apps for movies and TELEVISION shows. Considering that Showbox is not functioning anymore, it only made sense to locate its replacements.

Guy Who Reverse-Engineered TikTok Reveals the Scary Things He Learned
Facebook got itself into a sensitive data scandal when it did shady business with Cambridge Analytica, Instagram confirmed a security issue exposing user accounts and phone numbers, but these apps are basically online security havens compared to TikTok, according to one senior software engineer with about 15 years of professional experience.
2 months ago, Reddit user bangorlol made a comment in a discussion about TikTok. Bangorlol claimed to have successfully reverse-engineered it and shared what he learned about the Chinese video-sharing social networking service. Basically, he strongly recommended that people never use the app again, warning about its intrusive user tracking and other issues. Considering that TikTok was the 4th most popular free iPhone app download in 2019, this is quite alarming.
Bangorlol is no script kiddie. “The last several years of my career has been based around reversing mobile applications, analyzing how they work, and building additional third-party functionality around them,” he told Bored Panda. “A rough example would be me noticing that Twitter doesn’t show you a sequential timeline (no idea if they do or not) on the website but does on the app. I’d go into the Android or iOS version, find the requests that get the correct data, and build a third-party tool (app, website, browser extension) to give users this functionality.”
“Lately, it mostly involves reversing my company’s partner APIs so we don’t have to wait for them to create something custom for us. I hunt bug bounties when I’ve got the time, or help my friends out with theirs (or their CTF challenges). I like security in general and typically find at least a few major flaws whenever I change employers. I’m kind of a ‘jack of all trades’ kind of guy in the sense that I’m comfortable in most areas of software engineering and mostly pretty okay with many security topics.”
Reportedly, it took 200 days for the Chinese development team to create the original version of TikTok, but when Bangorlol got his cursor on its code, it had no chance. Although, it did try to put up a fight. “TikTok put a lot of effort into preventing people like me from figuring out how their app works. There’s a ton of obfuscation involved at all levels of the application, from your standard Android variable renaming grossness to them (bytedance) forking and customizing ollvm for their native stuff. They hide functions, prevent debuggers from attaching, and employ quite a few sneaky tricks to make things difficult. Honestly, it’s more complicated and annoying than most games I’ve targeted,” Bangorlol explained.
Such secrecy is understandable. TikTok’s earnings have risen proportionately with its increase in popularity and its owner ByteDance made a net profit of $3 billion last year, according to a report from Bloomberg.
Bangorlol thinks that we as a society have normalized giving away our personal information and have no expectations of privacy and security anymore, so giving TikTok our data together with our money is nothing surprising. “The general consensus among most ‘normal’ people is that they can’t/won’t be targeted, so it’s fine. Or that they have nothing to hide, so ‘why should I even care?’ I think the apathy is sourced from people just not understanding the security implications (at all levels) of handing over our data to a foreign government that doesn’t discriminate against who they target, and also doesn’t really have the best track record when it comes to human rights,” he said.
Keep in mind that Bangorlol released his initial commentary a while ago and hasn’t touched the app in months, and when he posted his findings, they were also a few months behind. “The app could’ve changed fingerprinting techniques or added/removed some of the nasty things they do. I strongly encourage security researchers who are much smarter than me and have more free time to take a look at the app and scrutinize every little detail they can. There’s a lot of stuff going on in the native libraries for at least the Android version that I wasn’t able to figure out and didn’t have the time to investigate further,” he added.
“TikTok might not meet the exact criteria to be called “Malware”, but it’s definitely nefarious and (in my humble opinion) outright evil,” Bangorlol said. “There’s a reason governments are banning it. Don’t use the app. Don’t let your children use it. Tell your friends to stop using it. It offers you nothing but a quick source of entertainment that you can get elsewhere without handing your data over to the Chinese government. You are directly putting yourself and those on your network (work and home) at risk.”
Here’s what people said after going through TikTok’s issues

The modern mobile app needs a revamp
Hey everybody, welcome back to Week in Review. Last week, I wrote about Apple’s App Store controversy, which I’m kind of revisiting this week through the lens of how Apple’s WWDC announcements tease a change to what apps fundamentally look like in the future.
If you’re reading this on the TechCrunch site, you can get this in your inbox here, and follow my tweets here.
The Big Story
Apple’s App Store has had a controversial month with developers demanding changes to how apps are monetized, but as Apple detailed the next versions of its operating systems at WWDC, it’s clear they believe third-party apps themselves have room to be fundamentally revamped.
This week at WWDC, Apple debuted App Clips, a snappy new segment of third party experiences that scales down the idea of an app around just a single feature or two. A user can quickly call up an App Clip via a URL, NFC tag or visual code and download when the right context arises. In a lot of ways it’s just another notification type pinned to more limitations for devs, but the thinking behind it follows Apple’s continued interests to shove third-party integrations deeper inside the operating system itself.
We’ve operated an an app paradigm for such a long time, but as Apple thinks about future platforms like AR glasses, it’s kind of clear that grid-based apps aren’t very efficient. The company has learned this pretty slowly with the Apple Watch, but sometimes it’s almost better for third-party experiences to feel like addendums to stock apps rather than operate as dedicated siloed platforms. Complications have been huge for the Apple Watch, but they also highlight how devices with limited screen real estate aren’t great platforms for developers to compete with the device maker.
There’s a lot of room for Apple to transform not only how apps are sold and discovered but how they fundamentally operate. It’s clear that Apple is interested in a more contextually rich third-party experience inside iOS. The creation of an internal app store buried within iMessage in iOS 10 was the most aggressive implementation of this, though follow-up on that initiative has been fairly light. This could be extended to other stock apps to augment offerings with third-party tweaks, but Apple would have to move past their reluctance to ship experiences that aren’t good enough their own.
The idea of grid-based applications on a home screen isn’t always efficient for users, and while the App Store has delivered huge revenues to the company, it’s clear that Apple is still thinking about how to streamline that experience. Widgets and App Clips focus users on an app’s actual utility, and I’m curious whether that’s actually a good thing for developers. I’d imagine the more time users spend using these bite-sized experiences, the less time they’ll actually click on those apps, dampening those developers’ opportunities to build sustainable platforms.
These miniature experiences Apple is pushing developers toward piggyback off a trend that’s long reigned supreme in China. WeChat’s mini-program network is unlike anything that exists in the US. WeChat has long dominated and intrigued Western companies, and while there have been efforts for years to rethink the format of third-party integrations on mobile, few have had success in replacing core functionality that exists in apps downloaded from app stores.
It’s unclear whether Apple has any sizable threats who could take this path. Facebook has scaled back their developer platform ambitions significantly in the aftermath of Cambridge Analytica and its developers have been burned enough that Facebook seem ill-positioned to make a play here anytime soon. An exception might be Messenger though its team will have to move past its failed chatbot efforts of several years ago. Earlier this month, Snap announced that it would be integrating lightweight apps into the chat section of Snapchat. The feature launched with just a handful of third party experiences and was integrated into the same section that Snapchat serves up its launcher for mini games.
App Clips, Widgets, Siri Suggestions and a host of more minute features paint a vision of more aggressive efforts to bring app experiences closer to the silicon, pulling them outside of the app grid and getting to the gist of their utility. As Apple identifies opportunities to put context at the forefront of how third-party integrations are accessed, how much can they drive developers to their vision of the future without also alienating them?
iOS 14’s App Clips will save you from always needing ‘an app for that’

Amazon buys Zoox Amazon is the latest tech giant to buy its way into the self-driving car industry. The company announced Friday that it would acquire the autonomous car startup Zoox. The company raised around $1 billion and the Financial Times reports that Amazon is getting its hands on the company for $1.2 billion. Read more here.
Microsoft kills Mixer The race to take down Amazon’s Twitch got a lot more interesting this week when Microsoft shared it was bowing out of the game-streaming race and shutting down its Twitch competitor, Mixer. The service had started with a long road ahead of it which Microsoft aimed to shorten by acquiring exclusive streaming rights to some of the world’s top gaming personalities. Apparently, that wasn’t enough. Read more about it here.
Facebook kills Oculus Go This week, I wrote about how Facebook was killing off the cheapest VR device it sells, the $149 Oculus Go headset. The device has already been sold out for weeks, but Facebook’s discontinuation of the two-year-old device comes as a surprise given previous company statements that insinuated it would receive updates down the line. Apocalypse Soon: What happens when the iOS advertising ID is deprecated?
Tumblr media
It’s rare for me to speak with a mobile advertiser that doesn’t view the deprecation of the IDFA — Apple’s proprietary advertising identifier for iOS devices — as a certainty, if not an imminent one. While the deprecation of the IDFA has been a possibility for years, and rumors of the identifier’s demise reliably circulate before every WWDC, a few recent developments support the notion that 2020 might usher in the end of an advertising ID for iOS devices:
In its most recent earnings call, Facebook’s CFO cryptically made reference to upcoming changes by mobile platform operators that will introduce friction into the process of mobile advertising measurement;
Facebook has also made some other changes that tangentially could relate to a potential end of the IDFA: it announced that it will no longer operate its Audience Network on the mobile web, and that it has modified its MMP program to disallow the sharing of view-through attribution data at the user level (see a note from Adjust below). Again, while neither of these issues directly relates to mobile advertising tracking or the relevance of an IDFA, they do both support a more privacy-centric posturing by Facebook that was perhaps taken to appease Apple;
Apple updated its iOS developer guidelines after last year’s WWDC developer event to bar apps in the Kids category from using third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. This was interpreted by many as a dry-run for full IDFA deprecation;
Google announced that it will phase out 3rd-party cookies from the Chrome browser within two years. Although Apple already does this with its Safari browser on mobile by default, Chrome has a much larger marketshare, and so this is a bigger development. While it is popular wisdom that the deprecation of the IDFA by Apple would likely instigate Google to deprecate the Android-equivalent GAID, given Chrome’s reach, it could be that Apple decides to one-up Google on the basis of privacy by reacting with the IDFA deprecation;
Apple introduced Sign in with Apple at WWDC 2019 as a means of allowing users to tie app- and website-specific authentication to their Apple IDs, meaning that Apple could ultimately be the route between devices and third-party platform IDs.
Tumblr media
Of course, all of these development could merely be coincidental to a decision by Apple to deprecate the IDFA; Tim Cook seems zealously protective of user privacy, and the large mobile platforms generally appear to be eager to stave off invasive regulation in the wake of public furor over privacy incidents such as with Cambridge Analytica, etc.
Tumblr media
And obviously, IDFA deprecation may not actually be on the immediate horizon, and it may not happen at all. But it’s interesting to consider what happens to the mobile advertising industry if it does, given the incredibly prominent role that the IDFA plays in even the most sophisticated advertisers’ attribution models for iOS. To that end, I present: a speculative, assumption-dependent vision of the first few months after the deprecation of the IDFA.
June 2020
Apple’s annual WWDC developer conference reveals a slew of new features coming to iOS 14 later in the year. Cryptically, Apple’s Vice President of Engineering, Craig Federighi, reveals that Apple has implemented a “simplified system profile” on iOS that limits the surface area of device information that can be collected by an app. The “simplified system profile” was first introduced to Safari in macOS Mojave in 2018 to stop devices from being fingerprinted by advertising networks. Marketing blogs and MarTech Twitter alight with speculation about the implications of this change.
Following the keynote, the first beta of iOS 14 is released to registered developers, and an important update to the documentation for the advertisingIdentifier property, which stores the user’s IDFA, is discovered (bolded text is new):
Important In iOS 10.0 and later, the value of advertisingIdentifier is all zeroes when the user has limited ad tracking. In iOS 14.0 and later, limit ad tracking is enabled by default.
Tech commentators immediately seize upon this revelation and declare that default IDFA zeroing will effectuate the end of direct response mobile advertising. Assuming that the iOS 14 adoption timeline resembles that of iOS 13, it is estimated that 50% of iOS devices will have limit ad tracking (LAT) enabled within a month of iOS 14’s release in September, and nearly all iOS devices will have limit ad tracking enabled by September 2021.
The mobile advertising technology ecosystem enters a state of panic, organizing war room meetings to come up with strategies for handling the monumental change coming to their industry in September, just three months away. Ad tech suppliers wonder if any additional device-level properties can be added to their models to improve the precision of fingerprinting, which, under the new “simplified system profile,” will only be reliable for a few minutes after an install. But most recognize that Apple is committed to removing or obfuscating these unique device signatures, such as when it added noise to device sensor data in iOS 12.2 as per the recommendations of this research paper. The changes implemented to iOS 14 are interpreted to be grievously dangerous by mobile ad tech vendors.
Tumblr media
Privacy advocates very vocally champion both the mobile simplified system profile and the new default limit ad tracking setting.
July 2020
Facebook announces that it will stop sending user-level data to its attribution partners for both iOS and Android, across all campaign objectives, by September. The move is unexpected and widely interpreted as being a concession to Apple in order to continue attributing users with its own proprietary data collected from its SDK. Google, Twitter, Snap, and Pinterest all announce very similar policy changes just a few days after Facebook.
These announcement stun the mobile advertising industry: if Facebook, Google, et al no longer relay user-level data to measurement partners, then install and event-based campaign types like Facebook’s AEO and VO and Google’s UAC can only be assessed for ROAS via aggregated, campaign-level data from the platforms themselves.
Mobile advertisers become anxious: what does this mean for measurement? And how will non-Self Attributing Network (SAN) sources of traffic be evaluated? App advertisers are unable to glean much helpful information from MMP partners, Apple, or their account representatives at various networks.
August 2020
Apple announces the first set of members of its new Certified Mobile Advertising Partners program: advertising platforms that are registered to attribute installs via the SDKAdNetwork API that Apple introduced in iOS 11. The list of partners includes most of the largest and most prominent providers of mobile traffic.
At this point, advertisers begin to get a clearer picture of the future of mobile measurement and the severity of the changes being instituted. If attribution is handled directly from iTunes and doesn’t include user device identifiers, then the impending new reality of advertising dictates:
ROAS and CPE campaigns will only be possible via the SANs that are able to do any form of fingerprinting via their proprietary SDK data and the revenue data they collect;
Cost Per Install values for campaigns from the networks in Apple’s Ad Partners program are calculable, but building effective ROAS models for these campaigns will be difficult, if not impossible. Without being able to attribute revenue to campaigns (because all IDFAs are zeroed, and SKAdNetwork transmits no identifiable user information), the traffic sources of monetizing users are unknowable;
Most of the infrastructure currently supporting mobile advertising will soon become obsolete.
Advertisers scramble to assemble data science teams to build Media Mix Models from their existing data and to validate their current ROAS models. Shifting from deterministic measurement to probabilistic measurement will take time; in the interim, their ROAS models can be used to provide credible assumptions around what various traffic is worth. Advertisers also begin attempting to re-negotiate their contracts with technology and data partners, recognizing that many of these partners won’t be needed in their new measurement paradigms.
Google announces that it will also turn on “Opt out of Ads Personalization” by default in the next Android release.
September 2020
iOS 14 is released to the general public. Almost immediately, CPMs on mobile plummet as advertisers reduce media spend across the board. Some apps see their advertising revenues drop by half; apps that rely exclusively on advertising for user acquisition experience shrinking DAU levels. Advertisers concentrate media spend across Apple Search Ads, Facebook, and Google while conservatively layering in traffic from other sources as measured through attributed installs from iTunes (via SKAdNetwork) in a media mix model. Many advertisers note that their Facebook install volumes have decreased relative to levels from before iOS 14, recognizing that fingerprinting may have previously over-attributed LAT installs to Facebook.
December 2020
By the end of the year, most advertisers have adjusted to the new ecosystem reality, although overall mobile advertising spend is about 10% lower than it had been one year prior. Since iOS 14 was launched, a major ad network acquired an attribution provider and is using its data to develop a media mix model service. Because of the added complexity of tracking and measuring the effectiveness of media spend, a large proportion of smaller advertisers are now only advertising on either Facebook or Google and Apple Search Ads; larger advertisers have built their own infrastructure to aggregate campaign-level install data and integrate it into their media mix model.
Consumer sentiment around Apple’s privacy changes to iOS 14 was overwhelmingly positive in June, but the fanfare waned over time and those changes are rarely cited or referenced going into the new year.

Why We All Should Switch to Secure Message Applications before 2020
Tumblr media
A lot of incidents in the past illustrates this bitter truth of data privacy. Luckily, there are some of the best encrypted messaging applications offering end-to-end encryption confusing and unsearchable. We can stick to SMS, but it has some security loopholes. Rather than chugging along with different chat apps, piling up and using all the memory, it’s time to pick the best-encrypted chat app to communicate with your friends and business officials on board. That way, every user can enjoy secure and protected data sharing without any hesitation.
Here Comes The Interesting Part.
There is one encrypted messaging application: Signal, is the most private and we all should be used for secure communications. The best thing about it is that it’s free and offers strong encryption, compatible with every mobile platform, and Open Whisper systems are committed to keeping it fast and simple by not mucking up with annoying with ads, or web-tracking.
The biggest reason why we all should be using encrypted chat application is that every data communicated through it remains private and no third-person can have access to it.
As long as both the sender and the recipient are using an encrypted chat app to share messages.
Plenty of messaging applications offer different features. But the best thing about Signal, making it superior from others is its ease of assurance of making every communication private, keeping it only between the proposed user and the recipient, while restricting it from any third-party user.
Encrypted chat apps work very similarly to the conventional SMS messaging apps, so it becomes quite easy to get started. Also, it becomes quite convenient signal cuts down any SMS fees. It supports an end to end encrypted audio and video calls, along with encrypted and secured messaging.  Sure, you can share messages, audio/video calls, pictures, videos, and files.
The encrypted messaging application of Signal is compatible for almost every platform be it iOS, Android, or desktop.
Every message sent via Signal is end-to-end encrypted. The application is free and open source opens an opportunity for code experts to verify the code and ensure its layers of security.
While we are talking about data privacy, how can we miss about the incidents like Cambridge Analytica or mass surveillance by the government officials? Talking of which, conventional messaging applications are not worth sharing messages, as these platforms are not the safest place to communicate through conversations.
So, with encrypted messaging applications, secured data and communications is no more a dream, as every message share are end-to-end encrypted. The signal is there to keep our data private, putting an end to all unauthorized access and data breaches.
By allowing users to share completely private conversations, encrypted messaging applications have changed the entire equation. Why is it important? Witnessing various data privacy events, we have experienced a lot of situations, where our privacy has been put into a dilemma. Keeping all this in mind, using platform offering end-to-end encryption, the encrypted messaging application is an incredible way to fight it.
Signal is an open source, free messenger application created by Open Whisper Systems. Launched in 2015, Signal supports secure encrypted messaging along with secured audio/video calls. The encrypted messaging application is primarily designed to help in keeping the conversations safe and private for both, Android and iOS platforms.
The private messenger is absolutely free and enables users to make secure audio and video internet calls along with secure texting. It only takes a minute to get downloaded, and set up on the device. Though the application draws only on the existing contact list but you can send an invite to your friends via text. For Android, only you are allowed to share messages with people not using the Signal application, however these messages aren’t that secure. In spite of having phone numbers as contacts, majority of connections are made over Internet, which is why SIGNAL needs internet access. The prime reason is end-to-end encryption which makes the communications over the application absolutely secure.
Features:
Signal is all set to replace the regular SMS messenger by adding a traditional touch of sending and receiving messages in a secured manner. The big difference between Signal and traditional SMS is that the application, automatically encrypts the messages sent to user stored in your contact list. Along with sending encrypted messages, Signal also provides the feature of secured audio/ video calls within the application. Calling a Signal user, enables the call to be encrypted. Similar to Skype, the calls made with the application are free and routed over internet. But Signal comes with an enhanced security features. One of the most crucial point is that both the users, needs to have the application, otherwise it gets converted into a normal call.
Signal also received recognition from the big name in the world of data security, Edward who even tweeted about the application, confirming that he also uses it. Being Edward Snowden’s favorite, Signal is addressed as the most secure encrypted messaging application available. The application is simply a download, install, and you can start using it, just by registering your phone number. With simply and basic graphics, developer Open Whisper have clearly taken a practical approach to design the application. Signal – the encrypted Messenger knows its job well, enabling us to communicate securely, without worrying about the third party spying on us.  Secure texting, lag-free calls over internet connections, and you couldn’t have asked for more.
Security:
Since Signal is open source, the code can be independently audited for any backdoor issue. The encrypted messaging application encrypts and decrypts the messages on the sender’s phone before sending and on recipient’s phone, after receiving, ensuring that the messages are not intercepted in between and can’t be stored on the phone as it gets erased automatically.
Every message shared through Signal is encrypted, not allowing the attacker to have an access of the conversation. Though Signal encryption for audio/video calls are protected, it is recommended to use text messaging, in case you’re handling sensitive data.
Why I liked Signal?
For online communications, it is very important to keep the communications safe, along with the information shared through it. Signal ensures that only trusted people are provided access to the message and communication.
Considering the importance of secure messaging, there are various sorts of information that you can keep safe and private.
Talking of online privacy, encrypted messaging is probably the best way to the device and personal information secure.
Signal is an encrypted messaging application that enhances data privacy and security within the communications, with being an outstanding alternative to default SMS messaging. It is considered to be the safest solution for protecting user’s privacy over texts and audio/video calls.

It’s Confirm Now, WhatsApp Pay Will Hit India’s Floor This Year!
Tumblr media
After the long grapple with the Indian government over data localization and payments data sharing with Facebook, WhatsApp pay has come up with the beta version. In 2014, Mark Zuckerberg bought WhatsApp in $19 billion and since then he has been trying to think about how to monetize this platform.
For adding a wallet feature in WhatsApp, Facebook has created the necessary data storage facilities in India to introduce WhatsApp Pay to the entire Indian user base, which is estimated to be between 350 million and 400 million users.
Recently, WhatsApp India head Abhijit Bose revealed that “the social messaging company’s focus is to expand digital and financial inclusion, to help businesses across India”.
According to Digital Payments (2018 edition), in India, the digital payments industry is estimated to grow to $1 Tn by 2023. In this growing phase of the digital payments industry, strong players such as Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay, may cause a freakish rift in the entry of WhatsApp Payments.
Before discussing anything in deep, let’s talk about WhatsApp Pay.
  What is WhatsApp Pay?
WhatsApp Pay is a seamless money transfer app that works conveniently on Android and iOS smartphones. Users can leverage the app to send or request money with their friends.
Facebook has made London a key hub for the development of this Fintech solution and roughly around one hundred people hired to lead new WhatsApp payments to push according to the FT.
Blue Prints of Digital Payment App WhatsApp Pay
The upcoming feature of WhatsApp i.e. WhatsApp Pay could follow the footprints of social networking app WeChat Pay. It is most popular China’s money transfer app with 800 million monthly active users. Initially, WeChat only offers chatting facility than it used the same platform and converted its existing users to payments users. WhatsApp will do the same in India with its ingrained user base. To best leverage its user base, WhatsApp Pay will need its P2P offerings to attract connecting users just like WeChat as P2P was the main reason behind the success of WeChat Pay.
  Existing Competitors
With the growing internet stabbing and number of increasing mobile application, many companies have launched their wallet apps. So for WhatsApp Pay, the competition level is quite high and all the wallet apps are doing good in the market.
Existing competitors for WhatsApp Pay are:
Google Pay
Samsung Pay
MobiKwik
Paytm
FreeCharge
PhonePe
Ola Money
What are the Indian Government Norms for WhatsApp Pay?
Based on the Economic Times report “Indian authorities are concerned that WhatsApp‘s payment service might share user data with group companies Facebook and Instagram, compromising the security, privacy and non-commercial information of its subscribers.”
In last year August, Facebook had to put a project on hold because of data storage concerns since than WhatsApp has been having a tough time in India for payments. The Indian government had spelled out some Indian norms that WhatsApp must adhere to including:
Complying with the Reserve Bank of India’s data localization rules
Setting up an office in India
Appoint a grievance officer and formulate a team in India
After so many discussions with the India government, Facebook had recently set up its data storage facilities in India and is reportedly preparing for the full launch of its UPI payments app in association with ICICI Bank.
WhatsApp Payments app development team has also partnered with HDFC, and Axis to launch the payment services.
In one of the events, the Company stated that “We’re building a new payment feature for India that enables people to easily send money to each other via WhatsApp”.
 Benefits of WhatsApp Payment App:
Here are some most effective features of WhatsApp Fintech mobile app:
It allows users to send and receive payment to anyone on the WhatsApp contact list from anywhere and at any time.
Its ‘Pay’ feature allows users to send funds as simple as sending a message.
The beneficiary will receive a payment notification on their chat window once the fund transfer has been made.
There is no need to enter the IFSC code while transferring money.
User can send money via virtual address.
  Limitations
