Google Maps updates with a ‘more vibrant’ appearance
Google has rolled out a worldwide update of its popular maps app to give terrain a ‘more vibrant’, detailed and colourful appearance.
The visual makeover adds greater detail and makes natural features easier to see, such as beaches, deserts, lakes or snow caps on the peaks of mountaintops.
The updates gives Google ‘one of the most comprehensive views of natural features on any major map app’, the tech giant has said.
The redesign will be available across all 220 countries and territories that Google Maps supports, starting this week.

‘We’re rolling out new visual improvements that bring even more detail and granularity to the map, making it easier to understand what an area looks like whether you’re exploring virtually or planning a visit,’ said Google Maps product manager Sujoy Banerjee in a blog post.
‘With a new colour-mapping algorithmic technique, we’re able to take this imagery and translate it into an even more comprehensive, vibrant map of an area at global scale.
‘Exploring a place gives you a look at its natural features – so you can easily distinguish tan, arid beaches and deserts from blue lakes, rivers, oceans and ravines.

‘You can know at a glance how lush and green a place is with vegetation, and even see if there are snow caps on the peaks of mountaintops.
Google has used a new colour-mapping algorithmic technique to make the service, which launched 15 years ago, visually richer.
In Iceland for example, Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in the country, is now shown in white, while rocky areas are of the country in the north are in light brown.
The caps, mountainous ridges and surrounding vegetation of Mount Rainer National Park in the US, meanwhile, are also more clearly visible.

Previously, the colour coding on Maps was largely limited to green and brown, with lightly shaded areas to denote urban centres.
For the update, Google has used computer vision to identify natural features from satellite imagery, looking specifically at arid, icy, forested, and mountainous regions.
It’s then analysed these features and assigned them a range of colours on the HSV (hue, saturation, value) colour model.
HSV was developed in the 1970s as an update to the more primitive primary coloured RGB (red, blue, green) colour model.
This means a densely covered forest can be portrayed as dark green, while making an area of patchy shrubs a lighter shade of the colour.

With this update, Google hopes to give users a clearer idea of what to expect from the terrain before they embark on a journey and ‘get a feel for an area’.
Google also revealed that a more detailed street view is also in the pipeline, which will start with London, New York, and San Francisco in the coming months, with plans to expand to more cities over time.
This update will show the accurate shape and width of a road to scale, Google said, allowing people to see exactly where features like pavements, crossings and pedestrian islands are located.
This is crucial information for Maps users who have accessibility needs, like wheelchair or stroller requirements, it said.
These details will also be particularly helpful during the coronavirus pandemic, as more people are opting to walk or take other forms of solo transportation.
Google Maps, which launched in 2005, is used by more than 1 billion people every month, the company said.

Cyber Security Week in Review
Apple released iOS 13 to all mobile users over the past week. There’s a series of new privacy and security features with the latest version of the operating system, though some of them are not working as expected.
Dozens of YouTubers had their account credentials stolen and accounts taken over as part of a wave of attacks over the weekend. Attackers used malicious websites to trick the content creators into entering their login information.
Microsoft released an out-of-band patch for Internet Explorer this week for a critical vulnerability. An attacker could exploit this bug to completely take over a user’s machine.
The U.S. is reportedly looking into several options to carry out a cyber attack against Iran. The goal is to disrupt their military operations without escalating kinetic warfare.
U.S. security firm CrowdStrike got wrapped up in the impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump. The company assisted the U.S. Democratic National Committee in researching cyber attacks during the 2016 presidential election, and Trump asked the Ukrainian national government to research CrowdStrike, thinking the company was located there.
Security firm Symantec discovered 25 apps on the Google Play store spreading malware. Together, they had been downloaded about 2.1 million times.
Amazon unveiled its idea for a new wireless protocol called “Sidewalk” that is designed to connect users’ Amazon-created IoT home devices. The company says Wi-Fi and Bluetooth do not extend far enough, and 5G is currently too expensive.
The actors behind the Magecart malware are testing new code that could target public WiFi hotspots. Security researchers say Magecart Group 5 is preparing the code to be injected into benign JavaScript files.
A new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office says that the U.S. Department of Energy has not done enough to protect the American electrical grid from cyber attacks. The report states actors across the globe can force power outages via cyber attacks, though the breadth of those outages is currently unknown.

African mobile app job market
Africa’s tech jobs market is booming, with the rate of growth for tech jobs outpacing other industries according to a new report. The report measured the creation of core app economy jobs, defined as jobs that directly to develop, maintain, or support mobile applications. In addition, the statistics also measured indirect jobs that support app developers in fields such as human resources or management. When these two categories of jobs are combined in ten African countries namely South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius and Ethiopia, the report found the mobile app sector employs 50,000 staff on average in those countries. The highest number of jobs was in South Africa, followed by Nigeria, Egypt and Morocco.This growth rate has meant the overall number of people employed in computer related jobs in Africa has surged by 56% since Android smartphones were first introduced in 2008. This is a significantly faster growth rate than even in developed world which averages 20%.The development of mobile apps now directly or indirectly accounts for nearly 10% of all ICT jobs in Africa. However, it is a rate higher than either Europe or North America. How to get started with 360-degree content for VR
Once a time and resource-heavy exercise, creating and embedding 360 degree imagery has become much cheaper and easier over the past couple of years.
The advent of mobile apps that can take 360-degree photographs, or ‘photo spheres’, has made creating 360-degree images accessible to those without specialized equipment.
At the same time, it has become easier to embed and share photospheres directly within webpages, and the virtual reality headsets which allow users to experience them are increasingly widespread and affordable.
Even without a virtual reality headset, users can still enjoy 360-degree imagery using their web or mobile browser, giving them the opportunity to experience a location or a visual idea in an immersive and memorable way.
So why should marketers be creating 360-degree content, and how can you get started with your own?
Why create 360-degree content?
In spite of the fact that 360-degree imagery is becoming easier to create, it’s still relatively rare, which makes it an effective way to stand out if you can do it well.
A 360-degree image is unusual, interactive, and offers a level of detail that even the most well-framed photograph can’t capture. Industries like travel, hotel, real estate or design lend themselves particularly well to 360-degree content, but it can work in any type of marketing if you’re prepared to get creative.
For instance, NASA – which is known for its inventive social media and content marketing – used 360-degree imagery on Facebook to allow users to ‘float around’ inside the Tranquility Module on the International Space Station.

Once you’ve got your creative idea and set out to create some 360-degree content, how do you go about it? Let’s take a look at some tools you can use.
How to create 360-degree imagery
Cardboard Camera
If you’ve got a smartphone and want to use it to create some VR content, one of the best options is Google’s Cardboard Camera – especially if you want to later use Google’s VR View to embed your image (more on that later).
Cardboard Camera is a free app specifically designed for the purpose of creating 360-degree images to be viewed in VR, and it’s available on both Android and iOS. Cardboard Camera images also come with an extra dimension – sound – to add to the experience, though you can disable this while recording if you want to.
To export your image afterwards, select any of the sharing options within Cardboard Camera (which you can bring up by tapping the Share button), which will create a link that allows you to access the image on any device.
Native mobile camera apps
A number of mobile devices now come with pre-installed camera apps that have native 360-degree photo capabilities. Note that this isn’t quite the same as the ‘panorama’ feature on your smartphone camera, as panoramas are only 180 degrees; but they work for many of the same purposes, and can be embedded on Facebook in the same way as 360-degree images.
Google originally introduced photo sphere functionality with the Nexus 4, and the functionality remained for subsequent Nexus models. LG then built on this with its VR Panorama app, and Samsung made a photo sphere mode available for individual download on the Galaxy S5 and upwards.
Google also released a standalone camera app for Android, Google Camera, which has panorama and photo sphere capabilities. But if you’re not an Android user, don’t despair: Google released a Photo Sphere app for iOS as well in 2014.
There are a few other free to download apps which claim to offer 360-degree capabilities, but it’s worth reading the reviews first, as a number of them don’t work as advertised or don’t support all device types.

If you have a bit more to spend and want to really invest in 360-degree photography, you can of course buy a dedicated 360-degree camera rig. There is a huge range of these available at different price levels, so it’s worth doing your research to find the right device for your budget and needs.
Embedding and sharing VR content
So, you’ve had your idea; you’ve crafted your fantastically immersive 360-degree content. How do you go about embedding or sharing it online?
Embedding into a webpage or mobile app
Until recently, there wasn’t a single dedicated tool for embedding 360-degree imagery into webpages or mobile apps, and some creative coding was required in order to do so. That is, until Google VR View came along in May 2016.
Google’s VR View was created to “address a common developer concern: the limited availability of VR hardware among the general public.” There was definitely a gap in the market for this kind of tool, and by creating it Google has been able to gain a pretty nice monopoly over embedding 360-degree imagery in webpages. And of course in true stereoscopic VR mode, it’s designed to be compatible with Google Cardboard headsets.

If you have a website that runs on WordPress, the WP-VR-view plugin for WordPress is the most straightforward and easy way to embed 360-degree images on your site. Just install the plugin, grab the link to your photosphere and follow the instructions in this video demo to embed.
And just to prove it works, below is an image I shot on my smartphone using Cardboard Camera on the banks of not-so-sunny Hammersmith, London, and embedded with the WP-VR-view plugin. (It looks best in full screen mode!)
Sharing 360 degree content via Facebook
As we saw at the beginning of the post, it’s also possible to share your 360-degree content on Facebook as an interactive image post.
All you need to do is upload your 360-degree image or panorama to your Page or profile as you would a regular image, and Facebook will automatically recognize that the post contains a 360-degree image.
Then all that’s left to do is write your post, and publish!

Hulu’s much-awaited internet-based live TV service now has a rough price point – and it’s pretty low. According to CEO Mike Hopkins, the service will come in at under $40 per month. AT&T’s competing service DirecTV Now, which debuted late last year, was initially said to have a $35-per-month price tag, but that turned out to be a temporary promotional offer. Not so with Hulu, Hopkins said; under $40 means under $40. Hopkins also said that the service will include Hulu’s $8 per month VOD offering, as well as a cloud-based DVR. It’s expected to launch in Q1.

After six months of beta testing, digital music service Pandora is set to widely roll out its newest ad format. The format enables marketers to replace album art with muted video and expandable display. Brands including Google, Lexus, and Express were on board for the initial test. PLATFORMS, APPS + DEVICES
Over-the-air broadcast TV integration seems to be all the rage at CES. Mohu, a company best known for making its own antennas for free over-the-air TV, is announcing a new product that combines its core product with new streaming capabilities, allowing viewers to stream free TV broadcasts to mobile and connected-TV devices. The product, called Airwave, is slated to ship in May for a price of $150. It’ll first be available at Best Buy and via Mohu’s website. Around the time of the device’s launch, Mohu also plans to roll out apps for mobile devices, as well as for devices like Roku and Apple TV. This isn’t Mohu’s first time trying to market a smart TV tuner. The company tried to roll out a similar device, called Channels, in 2015, without finding much success. It seems the company is betting that cord-cutters will be more of a market force in 2017. Nuvyyo, maker of the Tablo DVR for cord-cutters, is getting on the bandwagon as well. At CES, the company is unveiling the Tablo Live stick, a device that lets users wirelessly stream over-the-air live TV to devices that have Tablo’s apps installed. It’s slated to go on sale in Q2 of this year, selling for $99. Tablo’s software is already available for a number of devices, including iOS and Android phones, and connected-TV platforms like Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV. At launch, the device won’t be able to record broadcasts. But Nuvyyo is also previewing a new cloud DVR at CES, designed to let users store recordings from Tablo Live. No word yet on when it will debut or what it will cost.
VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
IMAX announced that it’s getting ready to open a virtual reality center at the Grove, a well-known shopping center/farmer’s market in Los Angeles. Owned and operated by IMAX, the center will showcase games and other VR experiences on StarVR and HTC Vive headsets. The goal, said IMAX exec Rob Lister, is to test out different types of VR experiences, gauging which types of experiences users enjoy and how much they might be willing to pay for them. The company plans to open a second VR facility in London within a month or two, and to open up a total of six VR centers within the first two quarters of 2017, including one in Japan and one in China.

From geography to gender, all is not equal in the media world, according to the new Cynopsis Salary Survey. The FCC’s 2016 privacy rules for Broadband providers, which prohibit Internet service providers from drawing on their subscribers’ prior behavior in ad targeting, were never popular with advertising trade groups. Now several of them have formally asked the FCC to reverse course. (The orgs in question: The Association of National Advertisers, the American Association of Advertising Agencies, the Data & Marketing Association, the Interactive Advertising Bureau, the Network Advertising Initiative, and the American Advertising Federation.) In a new petition, the groups argue that the FCC ruling “violates First Amendment protections of commercial speech.” The trade orgs needn’t worry: It’s a near certainty that the Commission’s soon-to-be Republican majority will overturn the ruling, which passed on a party line vote in October. Apple has removed all New York Times news apps from its app store in Mainland China. The tech giant says the move came at the request of the Chinese government. China started blocking the Times’ websites as far back as 2012, but had faced more difficulty when it came blocking the publication’s Chinese-language app. The Chinese government initially took issue with the Times after a series of 2012 articles examining the wealth of then-Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. News apps from the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and other publications remain available. As for the Times, not quite everything has been blocked: The publication’s virtual reality and crossword puzzle apps are still available throughout China.

AT CES, California startup uSens introduced its solution: Fingo, a $100 tracking module that creates a virtual version of a user’s hand within VR and AR experiences. The virtual hand reflects the precise movements of users’ real hand motions, enabling them to more easily manipulate virtual objects. Fingo, uSens announced, is already compatible with Epson’s new developer-oriented AR glasses. For now the company’s goal is to add to the list, encouraging more headset-makers to integrate Fingo into their devices. The company raised $20 million in a series A funding round last summer. Google has rolled out a worldwide update of its popular maps app to give terrain a ‘more vibrant’, detailed and colourful appearance. The visual makeover adds greater detail and makes natural features easier to see, such as beaches, deserts, lakes or snow caps on the peaks of mountaintops. The updates gives Google ‘one of the most comprehensive views of natural features on any major map app’, the tech giant has said. The redesign will be available across all 220 countries and territories that Google Maps supports, starting this week. Users can clearly make out the beaches and greenery that line Croiatia’s coast and nearby islands like Hvar ‘We’re rolling out new visual improvements that bring even more detail and granularity to the map, making it easier to understand what an area looks like whether you’re exploring virtually or planning a visit,’ said Google Maps product manager Sujoy Banerjee in a blog post. ‘With a new colour-mapping algorithmic technique, we’re able to take this imagery and translate it into an even more comprehensive, vibrant map of an area at global scale. ‘Exploring a place gives you a look at its natural features – so you can easily distinguish tan, arid beaches and deserts from blue lakes, rivers, oceans and ravines. Iceland’s mountains and glaciers are better represented by the new update, which is due to roll out this week ‘You can know at a glance how lush and green a place is with vegetation, and even see if there are snow caps on the peaks of mountaintops. Google has used a new colour-mapping algorithmic technique to make the service, which launched 15 years ago, visually richer. In Iceland for example, Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in the country, is now shown in white, while rocky areas are of the country in the north are in light brown. The caps, mountainous ridges and surrounding vegetation of Mount Rainer National Park in the US, meanwhile, are also more clearly visible.
