My Tech Setup

I’ll make separate posts for my software and bass guitar setups, but here’s my current tech hardware setup.

MacBook Pro

My Mac is the center of it all — and I’m living the laptop-desktop lyfe.

Now, there are many things I like about living in Norway. And one of them, is that we’ve mandated by law that things like computers needs to have a 5-year warranty(ish). And this also applies to second-hand owners! So buying used Apple gear, is great here — and that’s how I bought my MacBook Pro when it was 10 months old.

It’s a 14-inch M1 Pro base model, with 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM.

I do have to be mindful of the storage, and occasionally, I push the RAM. But it still works tremendously. I’ve never been this happy with a computer before.

I just love that I can unplug one cable, and just take my laptop home with me.

When I had this at my home office, I also connected ethernet to the spare port, a mouse in the USB-A hub, and some more stuff.

I've tilted the trackpad (and its wrist rest), to improve the ergonomics. I should probably get a split keyboard as well...

Makes it easier to connect both my headphones and speakers to the Mac, and I also use it for bass rehearsel and recording, and for testing pedal boards. Fastened with Dual Lock.

The mic and monitors are fine - nothing more, nothing less. But very practical!

These sound great! Especially with Crinacle's EQ preset set through . Tons of leakage, though.

Desk accessories

The wool desk mat was custom ordered (to me previous, tiny, desk) from this Etsy store. The, equally custom, wrist rests are from this Etsy store.

I almost never need a wallet - so Apple's MagSafe wallet is perfect. The Moleskin notebook is just as under used.

The iPad and headphones stand is IKEA’s (very cheap) Havrehoj. I like it a lot!

iPad

I have the iPad Pro 11-inch from 2018 (the first with the flat sides), with LTE and 256 GB of storage. I also bought this used — in 2019, and it still works well (even though I’m starting to notice that it’s 5.5 years old, with the occasional slowdown). I’m one of those who loves having LTE — as it’s so nice to never having to worry about internet connection. I also used it as my «whiteboard» when I was a teacher — and could just switch to LTE if the school’s network was struggling. 1

I also have the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, which I like.

iPhone

I’m a noted Mini iPhone enjoyer, and my iPhone 13 Mini (in Midnight) has worked perfectly since the day I got it. It fixed all the issues of the 12 Mini, and is a top-tier iPhone IMO.

Here are some things I’ll say ’til the day I die (and will fight everyone who disagrees with 💪🏻):

The ordinary (potential) Mini buyer is on a long update cycle, and has also bought SE phones. So when the SE got updated half a year before the 12 Mini’s release, many of those had recently bought a phone — and this hurt the sales.

The 15 Plus phone also «flopped», but doesn’t get nearly the same amount of flak!

The lineup with the 13 Mini, 13, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max was the perfect lineup. Apple should be able to include a mini phone in their trillion dollar pipeline anyway. I don’t have particularly small hands (I just like to be able to use my phone one-handed), but many people do and should be well-served as well.

Here’s to hoping the next SE is a Mini. 🤞🏻 (But I doubt it. And, my next phone is probably a Pro for the cameras anyway…)

I also have the first gen AirPods Pro. I really like them, but I’ve had some troubles with them, and had to return them a couple of times. Luckily, there’s the whole government mandated warranty — so even though I bought them in 2019, I got brand-new ones (for free) as late as the fall of 2023. 🙌🏻

This is truly a very complex device Apple includes a simple USB-C 2.0 cable with the new iPhone 15 Pro, although the smartphones support USB-C 3.0. But Apple sells a Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) Pro cable for between $70 and $160 depending on the length. The authors of the Lumafield portal decided to evaluate such a cable using a Neptune X-ray tomograph to understand whether the Apple cable is worth the money. [caption id="attachment_72743" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Apple Thunderbolt 4[/caption] It turned out that the Cupertino product is truly head and shoulders above the cheap cables sold on the market. [caption id="attachment_72744" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Apple Thunderbolt 4[/caption] The connector has a hard plastic housing; underneath there is a metal shield, completely glued to the connector body - everything is made of stainless steel. Where the cord exits the connector, we see a one-piece strain relief, crimped on eight different sides, which shields the entire bottom of the assembly. Up to $160 Apple Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) Pro Cable X-rayed The Thunderbolt connector delivers maximum performance at virtually every point; it has 24 pins, all mounted independently on a 10-layer PCB. By filtering out the lower-density PCB substrate in our Voyager rendering, we find many blind and hidden vias. Blind vias connect the outer layer to the inner layers but do not extend across the entire board, while hidden vias connect only the inner layers and are not visible from the outside. Another interesting thing hidden in the board is a wobble on one of the tracks. It contains a small workaround to ensure that its length is equal to the length of its pair trace, which is especially important for ultra-high-speed data transfers. The Thunderbolt cable contains three different types of wires, corresponding to its separate charging and data transfer capabilities. Coaxially shielded cable cores are high-speed data transmission lines. Most of the unshielded wires carry power, but two of them are designed to carry data and support legacy USB 2.0 features. The wires and their screens are displayed separately on the printed circuit board. To sum it up, the authors say that the Apple cable is an amazing piece of precision engineering. [caption id="attachment_72748" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Apple Thunderbolt 4[/caption] As for cheaper cables, everything is much worse. For example, the Amazon cable, which costs an order of magnitude less than the Apple cable, although it supports transmission of up to 60 W of power, only complies with the USB 2.0 standard. This cable has only 12 pins crossing each other, a ground shield inside the housing, and a small chip for controlling power and data transfer. [caption id="attachment_72750" align="aligncenter" width="702"] Apple Thunderbolt 4[/caption] The $6 NiceTQ USB-C cable is even more basic. It is unshielded and the connector body is housed in molded plastic without any connection to the cable's ground wire. The cable strain relief is just a rubber extension of the plastic body of the plug, without metal reinforcement, unlike the two previous connectors. There are eight pins inside the connector, but only four of them are connected to the cable. This cable does not have any printed circuit board at all.

My Thoughts on the iPhone 15 Pro (Blue)

This week I purchase iPhone 15 Pro in the Blue Titanium color, and I must say, it's been quite an upgrade. One of the first things I noticed was the significantly lighter titanium frame compared to my previous iPhone 13 Pro. To put it into perspective, the iPhone 15 Pro weighs in at a mere 6.67 ounces, whereas its predecessor, the iPhone 13 Pro, tipped the scales at 7.65 ounces. It's only marginally heavier than the iPhone 13, which comes in at 6.43 ounces. Please note that these weight measurements were taken using my personal scale, so they may not be exact.

Contrary to some comments I've heard, the titanium frame doesn't seem to collect fingerprints. I do make it a habit to wipe down my phone each morning and occasionally give it a thorough cleaning with a Clorox wipe and my trusty CultCloth.

The introduction of USB-C in this model rendered all my Lightning adapters obsolete since I no longer own any Lightning-compatible devices. I connected my ScanDisk 1TB USB-C drive, and it provided me with the capacity to record 159 minutes of 4k 24 Pro Res, 127 minutes of 4k 30 Pro Res, or 63 minutes of 4k 60 Pro Res. I do plan on investing in a Thunderbolt or USB-C cable to take full advantage of transferring videos to my computer, but that will require some research and, of course, some video content to transfer.

One standout feature is the programmable action button. I've currently configured mine to open my iOS Shortcuts folder, where I have a plethora of useful shortcuts, including Calculated Tip, Blood Glucose, Restart, Shut Down, and Passwords.

Since I didn't program the action button to mute my iPhone, I created two automations to manage Silent Mode through the iOS Shortcuts App. At 8 am every day, my phone automatically switches to silent mode because I use my Apple Watch to interact with notifications. Then, at 10 pm, another automation turns off silent mode, as my Do Not Disturb Focus allows calls from my favorites to ring through. During my daily Do Not Disturb Focus from 10 pm to 8 am, everything else remains blissfully silent.

Another noteworthy feature exclusive to the 15 Pro models is the presence of Silent Mode and Show in Status Bar toggles under Sounds & Haptics. The latter adds a convenient bell icon next to the time at the top of the iPhone screen.

Additionally, under Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Charging Optimization, there's an option to limit charging to 80%, unique to the 15 models. With this option enabled, the battery will only charge to 80%, resuming charging if it drops to 75%. Apple does note that the "iPhone will occasionally charge to 100% to maintain an accurate battery state-of-charge."

In the Settings > General > About section, scrolling to the bottom reveals three important battery-related details: Manufacture Date (mine was in July 2023), First Use (September 2023), and Cycle Count (2). I also ran the Battery Stats iOS Shortcut, which indicated that my Maximum capacity was 3384 mAh, slightly higher than the Apple-advertised size of 3274 mAh. Currently, my maximum capacity sits at 3353 mAh.

Transitioning from the iPhone 13 Pro to the 15 Pro brought me some features reminiscent of the iPhone 14 Pro, such as the Dynamic Island and the Always On screen. While I've enjoyed experimenting with the Dynamic Island, I opted to turn off the Always On option, as I found it unnecessary. I also keep my screen's frame rate locked at 60 frames per second, which, as far as I know, doesn't allow for the Always On feature.

This marks my first experience without a physical SIM card, although I had used eSIMs in the past. I currently manage two phone numbers with two different carriers, AT&T and T-Mobile MVNOs. Both are set to LTE and Low Data mode to conserve battery life. Moving phones and eSIM was a piece of cake.

Lastly, I caved in and purchased a protective case after testing the waters without one on the first day. I made that mistake once before with an iPhone 7 Plus, and it resulted in a fall from my pocket in a parking garage, leaving it scratched from sliding across the concrete floor. Given the premium price of this phone, I decided to take extra precautions. I opted for an OtterBox Symmetry with MagSafe clear case, and I have another case type on the way. This choice not only provides excellent protection but also showcases the phone's beautiful color and securely holds my MagSafe Apple Wallet.

In conclusion, I'm genuinely satisfied with the iPhone 15 Pro. For the first time in years, I feel like I'm truly getting my money's worth with all the new settings and features. It's motivating me to harness the full potential of this powerful device.
