“À primeira vista, muitos acreditam que os trabalhos de Ian Berry são fotografias em tons de azul ou pinturas a óleo de cor índigo. Isso não ocorre apenas quando visto online ou impresso, quando muito da profundidade e detalhes são perdidos, mas até mesmo de perto. É simplesmente seu meio para ver o mundo, sua pintura e que é o material usado neste mundo moderno; com todos os seus símbolos e dualidades, além de ser uma peça de roupa tão comum que une muitos ao redor do mundo. Ao vê-los de perto, você fica ciente da profundidade e da textura e vê como cada pedacinho de jeans foi pensado e trabalhado a partir de jeans com lavagens e desbotamentos, que ajudam a criar aquele tom de pintura. Ele cria cenas urbanas melancólicas, muitas vezes retratando um lado solitário ou menos glamoroso da vida na cidade. Para ele o jeans agora é um tecido urbano, depois de ter tido origens rurais. Que é a melhor maneira de capturar a vida urbana cotidiana.”

“At first glance, many believe that Ian Berry’s work are blue toned photographs or indigo coloured oil paintings. This is not only when viewed online or in print, when much of the depth and detail is lost, but even up close. It is simply his medium for seeing the world, his paint, and what a material to use in this modern world; with all its symbols and dualities, as well as being such a common item of clothing that unites many around the globe. To see them up close, you become aware of the depth and texture and see how each small piece of denim has been considered and crafted out of jeans with washes, and fades, which help create that painterly tone. He creates melancholic urban scenes, often depicting a lonely or less glamorous side of city living. He says denim is now such an urban fabric, after having such rural origins. What better way to capture everyday urban life.”

Roles played by us. Its rare when one frame, speaks many if not all stories, the man in the hat and the handy man are opposites in apparel, in status and in direction. Though they coexist and even co-depend they don’t seem to be acknowledging the fact. A lot of silent drama, that is what this picture spoke to me
