#ice cube method for poppies

Time to plant the poppy seed ice cubes!

They've been in the freezer for two weeks now, stratifying. I've never had any luck sowing poppy seed in the fall so I hope this method works.
I moved the wood chips away to make a row, added some old potting soil and a sprinkle of alfalfa meal (to counteract any nitrogen-tying up by the few wood chips that accidentally get mixed in), and lightly cultivated the top two inches or so of soil to mix everything together.
I then made a 1/2" furrow and sowed some parsnip and calendula seed all along the row so even if the poppies don't work, I still have something growing.
Then I placed the ice cubes full of poppy seeds about 8" apart on top of the soil and pressed in to seat them. I marked the spots with red straws cut in half--don't want to weed any unfamiliar seedlings and mess this up.

Watered everything in because of the parsnips/calendula and replaced the row cover to keep the birds and squirrels out of it. Crossing my fingers that the bugs don't make off with the seeds, but not much I'm willing to do about that. After the seedlings are sized up I'll move the wood chips back over as mulch (may use some chopped straw in the meantime after germination).
Bonus spring flower pic:

The azalea hedge next to the walk up to the porch is lightly blooming. They got confused by the extended warm season and had a flush of blooms in November, so there's not as many flowers this spring.
#gardening#seed sowing#stratification#ice cube method for poppies#hedging your bets with extra seed#parsnips#calendula#i think these are oriental poppies but i'm not sure#asked for permission to take a seedhead while walking to the library and i seem to remember the flowers being red or very dark orange

Thandai Recipe In Hindi
The festival of Holi is going to come very soon and if there is no cold on Holi then there is no joy in the colors of Holi. So on the festival of Holi, Thandai Recipe is made mostly at everyone's place. A popular and refreshing Indian thandai made with spices, seeds and dry fruits. It is an all-purpose drink that is served during Maha Shivratri or Holi festival to provide essential nutrients for the celebration. It can be made flavored with mango, rose and betel leaf or can be served plain with milk without any additional flavorings.
Most Indian festivals are celebrated with food and drink across India. The cuisine of each festival is created and served to meet specific needs. A good example of a purpose-based recipe is thandai, made with milk, dry fruits and spices for a day-long or night-long celebration. The standard thandai recipe is loved by most of us, but there are many better flavors and variations too. The possibilities for adding flavor and variations are endless, and almost anything can be added.
furthermore, i would like to add some more tips, additions and variations to Thandai Recipe. to begin with, the masala used in this recipe is a thick, wet paste that needs to be mixed with cold milk to make thandai. You can make thandai powder by dry roasting these ingredients and use it whenever needed. secondly, for a sweeter version, you can mix the same mixture with basundi or condensed milk. In fact, you can freeze them into popsicles to make kulfi. Lastly, the bhang drink very famous during the festival of Holi can be made from the same spice mix. Because marijuana and the same drink are mixed together.
Ingredients needed to make thandai:-
For thandai paste-
Less than ½ cup almonds (shelled)
2 tbsp pistachios
¼ cup cashews
¼ cup watermelon seeds
½ tbsp black pepper
2 tbsp poppy seeds
2 tbsp fennel
8 pieces cardamom
5-6 threads of saffron
3 tbsp rose petals (dry)
2 cups water (for soaking)
Other ingredients-
Sugar
Milk
Pieces of ice
For flavor-
Mango
betel leaves
yellow food color (optional)
green food color (optional)
Thandai preparation method:-
Make paste-
1. To make thandai, first take a big bowl and add almonds, pistachios, cashews, watermelon seeds, black pepper, poppy seeds, fennel, cardamom, saffron threads and rose petals to the bowl. Will put all these in the bowl.
2. Now put 2 cups of water in the bowl and keep it soaked for at least 6 hours. If you have less time then soak all the ingredients in hot water for 2 hours.
3. Now we have to make a smooth paste by putting the soaked ingredients in a mixie jar with the same water.
Make thandai-
4. To make Thandai, add 1 tbsp sugar and 3 tbsp Thandai spice paste, 2 cups cold milk in a jar. Now we will mix them. Now take a big glass and put some ice cubes in the glass.
5. Now pour the prepared thandai in a glass. Now your thandai is ready to drink.
Prepare mango flavored thandai-
6. To bring taste of mango in Thandai, put 1 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp Thandai masala, 2 tbsp mango pulp, 2 cups cold milk in a mixie jar and stir.
7. If you want color in cold. So 1 pinch of yellow food color can be applied.
8. Now your mango flavored thandai is ready, now you have to take a big glass and put some ice cubes in it and pour thandai on top. Now you can enjoy Thandai to the fullest and celebrate Holi with lots of colors.
Prepare betel flavored thandai-
9. To bring the taste of betel in thandai, we need betel leaves. So what are we to do? Put 2 betel leaves, 2 tbsp sugar, 3 tbsp thandai masala and 2 cups cold milk in a mixer jar and mix it.
10. If you want color in paan thandai, you can use green food colour. So you have to add a pinch of green food color and stir till it becomes smooth. Now your paan wali thandai is ready.
11. Now you have to take a glass and put some ice cubes in it. Now pour the prepared thandai in a glass and enjoy.
12. In this way you can make 3 types of thandai at a time. Holi festival can be turned into more ragins and colors.
Note:-
. firstly, i have not added sugar in thandai masala paste as we can vary the quantity of sugar in each serving.
. Flavored thandai can also be made like rose, coffee or tea.
. Also, you can enjoy Holi by adding cannabis to it.
. finally, the traditional thandai recipe is a very healthy drink.

Weird People Have Cool Role Models
Article by Ella Jarrard. Graphic by Allison Thompson.
As a highly unphotogenic person, I can honestly say that this is the first time I wish I could input a photo into my writing. I say this because I’d like all of you wonderful readers to truly grasp the picture I am about to paint for you.
I'll start this way. I was not a cool kid. I was four foot three til I was fourteen. Because of that, I rode with and carried a booster seat for the car until fourteen as well. I was a little shy, terminally unathletic, and, as a wonderful cherry on top- pretended I was a horse till 8th grade. Jumping over bus benches, hedges, and cantering (instead of running) was my preferred method of transportation- everywhere. I’d like to add that I in no way am ashamed of any of this- I miss my booster, I still get carsick without it, and I feel running consistently proves less effective than a good, brisk canter.
While this un-coolness seemed to be part of my blood, it wasn’t. My parents are cool- and I mean genuinely cool. My dad was a punk in the seventies and eighties, worked at the Minnesotan equivalent of CBGBs, seeing the starter shows of punk bands we now see on polyester shirts at department stores. He came from a bloodline of cool too- his Irish Catholic parents dabbled in being super-fans of the B52s, Janis Joplin, and early Gipsy Kings- his siblings followed as well. My mom’s first album was an ELO record, which served as a poppy base for a life filled with conflicting tastes- Led Zeppelin, New Order, Stevie Wonder. On the nights I came in early from pretending I had just won the Kentucky Derby, my parents would show me a plethora of grainy concert videos of forgotten bands from the 80s, or sit me down at dinner for a lecture on how Ice Cube defined the diss track.
It was on one of these nights that I found my first cool rolemodel. Sweaty from explaining to my dachshund how what she was doing was not, in fact, a proper horse trot, I came inside to find a movie playing- it was called The Punk Singer. There on the screen was Kathleen Hanna, frontwoman of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, and a leading voice of the Riot Grrrl movement of the 90s. I was instantly enthralled.
It shows Hanna explaining her vision, her immense adoration for Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, her love of clothespin jewelry, and her dauntless reactions to male violence while onstage. Although Hanna has that kind of effortless, messy beauty one tries to repeatedly replicate, her beauty wasn’t what struck me so deeply- it was her unwillingness to succumb to unrelenting disrespect and violent threats. She spoke of dodging beer cans thrown by pseudo punks who were angry about women infiltrating the Seattle scene, and, expectedly, of how those men proved to be the least punk punk fans ever made.
In The Punk Singer, her natural intelligence oozes out of her- it seems almost blasphemous to think that anyone- whether it be the press, fellow musicians, pseudo punk fans- could doubt or disrespect her, but they did, and constantly. The Riot Grrrl movement and Bikini Kill were both horribly disrespected by publications. They consistently implied Bikini Kill and other Riot Grrrl bands were young, untalented women parading around in their underwear instead of being prolific musicians who tried to make room for women in the physical and metaphorical punk mosh pit.
My starter level reverence for Kathleen Hanna grew astronomically within the hour and twenty two minute documentary. As I sat agape my thoughts of how to distress every Gap t-shirt in my closet in time for 7th grade tomorrow swirled rapidly. Soon the sparkly slogans like “Sassy and Classy” disappeared, replaced by a blunt tip sharpie which wrote “Anarchy in the U.K”. Gone was Monte Carlo from my Netflix favorites, it was now “Who Killed Nancy?”
There comes a time in many teenagers' lives where the wardrobe turns darker, the eyeliner gets thicker and deeper into the waterline, and the presence of self ripped black tights becomes constant. Despite it being possibly embarrassing, or horribly shameful to some parents, this time is so vitally important, especially to women. I say this backed solely by my own profound experience with a badass female role model. It was vital to me.
Having an authentic, self-founded role model who finds us naturally, through pathways of shared interest- leads to further activation of our goals, aspirations and arguably, personal fulfillment. The term “self founded” is particularly vital in this role model concept. The narrowcasting of hyper feminine, largely stereotypical TV shows, movies and books where the main character is an overused archetype meant to define the female psyche, is damaging and polarizing to young women and gender diverse people everywhere. When one doesn’t fit into this stereotype, the stereotype often being thin, white, and secretly immensely privileged, one’s sense of self instantly becomes uncertain. Being prescribed a role model crafted by (most likely) all white men sitting in a writers room at Disney channel isn't what young women and gender diverse people need- they need to find someone who identifies with them deeply, who shows what they could become, someone who fulfills our future ambition just by being their cool, untamed selves.
Finding Kathleen Hanna was vital to me and my future. I no longer felt shy, no longer was embarrassed by my kind of dorky ‘horse’ habit, and felt much more inclined to express myself with music, art, and interests that weren’t widely shared among my peers. I loved hearing a young woman like Hanna be loud, and instantly wanted to start announcing myself like Bikini Kill did in the beginning of their songs. I could combine interests like Hanna did with her passion in third wave feminism and her love with punk, and be comfortable knowing all of my interests were valid and correctly placed- horseback riding at stuffy equestrian centers was now accompanied by a perpetual soundtrack of the Sex Pistols, The Clash (much to my dad’s delight) and The Damned.
Looking back on my childhood now is like watching slides of different phases pass quickly, old interests vanished and were replaced by my big new thing. I feel proud of that, and as much as I am deeply embarrassed of some parts- like when I made my friends call me Ellore instead of Ella during my punk stage- a time they never have let me forget- I feel like each phase and role model is still deeply embedded in my soul. Kathleen Hanna made me who I am- I’d be nowhere as comfortable with myself and with my strong, unrelenting opinions without her and her strength in the RiotGrrrl movement. I never saw myself within the role models prescribed to me as a young girl, and it made me feel so deeply confused as to whether I was doing the whole preteen girl thing right.
I saw myself in Kathleen Hanna. I saw in her what I wanted to be, I saw in her what I wanted to say and fight for, and through that- I began to see myself.

💔 38: My muse is a cult leader and yours is a devoted follower. - Ruby
…A FLAKE OF YOUR LIFE
do you don’t you want me to make you | cult au@scarlettxruby
Ephram wears his long dark blond hair up in a messy knot now. It had only taken two members of the Poppy Family making allusions to him resembing the Nazarene before Ephram stopped wearing it down, although he’s kept the beard. Ruby knows from her talks with him that Ephram secretly thinks the reference is a silly one, that the Jesus with the pale skin and lachrymose blue eyes is a farce. Besides, in the worn jeans and thin white tunics he prefers, Ruby thinks he looks more like some erstwhile folk rocker. When they sing together, dilated and dreamlike on peyote, she thinks she’s a fit to him.
Ruby drinks apple cider vinegar till her teeth are edged. She concentrates for as long as she can on reciting nursery rhymes. She sucks on ice cubes till she’s shivering.
These are only a few of the suggestions that Ephram’s given the Family for how they can control their libidos; it’s their strictest tenet. He doesn’t want the media writing exposés about them being a bunch of sex-crazed freaks, and he’s stringent about making sure nobody’s fucking on the side. The way that Ephram makes sure about that is … well, it’s nothing they haven’t all agreed to, but….
Anyhow. It’s a tenet Ephram put into place years ago after the night that Iann and Freddie left, taking with them half of the Family’s coffer and the Westfalia that had been their sole method of transport. And when Ephram makes sure nobody’s having sex, he’s rigorous about it. Unsparing.
Ruby rubs her damp palms against the sides of her embroidered sundress as she pads up to where Ephram is standing in the low sunset, smoking weed at the rubbly edge of their compound parking lot. “Hey,” she says softly as she approaches, and he gives her a glance and a smile before taking a long draw and handing her the joint.
She takes it and sips a cautious puff as Ephram lets the smoke stream from his lips and inhales it neatly again into his nose. “I needed to talk to you away from the others,” he starts, looking out over the empty field. “About somethang serious, Ruby, about your place in the Family.”
The resinous herbaceousness in her chest nearly chokes her, like she’s swallowed a hammer. Ruby drinks that damn apple cider vinegar, but it doesn’t prevent her from seeing how handsome that new boy in the Family is with the dark curls and wide-set eyes, and it doesn’t sour her desire any. “Okay,” she says in a very small voice, thinking about Jack and Jill going up that hill.
“It’s recruitment time,” Ephram says when he takes the joint back, and his fingertips are dry and cool. “You can stop following the tenets for as long as you need, to bring us in more recruits.” He looks over at her and his eyes are as cool as his fingertips; not even so far as cold, nothing that extreme. Cool and appraising as they look her up and over the way you’d examine any tool in your toolbox or weapon in your arsenal. Ephram’s eyes don’t change even a degree either way when he adds to finish their conversation, “–that new boy’s gonna find potentials for you, and then you’ll recruit them. All right?”
Jack fell down, Ruby thinks frantically, and broke his crown, and Ephram’s looking at her waiting for a response. Ruby’s about to open her mouth to say yes, of course, yes, she’ll do anything to help the Family even if it means that, but Ephram’s already walking away from her towards the open field. “If you get pregnant,” he says, voice floating back with marijuana smoke, “I’ll take the baby. It’ll be … useful.” He laughs, a dry grassy chuckle, and leaves her behind as he wades out further and fades and disappears.
–and jill came tumbling after, is the only thing that screams, over and over, through Ruby’s mind.

Hey look, some of the 10 year old extra-dwarf pak choi seed that I just threw into this earthbox has come up after several weeks.

It's a blurry pic, sorry. I counted 10 seedlings, so it was definitely worth doing. They seem to be clustered on one end so far (it IS where more sunlight hits in the cold frame) so I think I'm just going to shove some green onion ends into the other end to regrow.

Kale seedlings just mostly hanging out in their Tidy Cats bucket planter. Hoping this spate of warm weather will spur some actual growth.

The three transplanted strawberries from yesterday sporting their wire mesh trashcan to protect against wildlife digging until they're established. The goal is to fill that bed with strawberries so I need to look up how to encourage runners over berry production for this year. Alternatively i wonder how hard it would be to harvest then grow the seeds...

Decided I'd better remove the straw and burlap covering my two earthboxes of peppermint today and yep, I was right to do so. Will still leave them in the protected alcove on the ground so I can recover if needed. Probably will give them their spring sprinkle of fertilizer too.
Almost finished with pea planting, but that will be a separate post.
I've also filled an ice cube tray half full in preparation of using the "ice cube method" for sowing poppies. Tomorrow after it freezes I'll sprinkle the seeds on top of each cube, fill it the rest of the way up with water, and stick it in the freezer again for 2-3 weeks to cold-stratify. Then you just plop the ice cubes where you want to grow poppies and push them into the earth slightly and wait. I've never had success sowing poppy seed in the fall, so it'll be great if this works. I got the seed for free by asking a nice gardener if I could have one of the seedheads off their poppies while I was walking to the library. I always carry a supply of small ziplock bags with me everywhere for exactly this reason. I get so many free seeds this way.
Other garden tasks for today include chopping the old leaves off the liriope before the new leaves can get in the way and pulling the little metal tower cage/obelisk out--it needs a wire brushing and rustoleum painting before the clematis covers it because it's rusty and flaky and not in an attractive interesting way.
#gardening#part one#germination of old seed#protecting perennial plants#from weather#and from wildlife#ice cube method for poppies#i love poppies but i've always had to buy transplants#and they've refused to reseed or survive the winter#the seed i got is the ornamental kind but if this works then i'll buy some breadseed poppy seed too#it's currently 80F (ugh)#which means i'm sweating#but it's good for repainting stuff i suppose#i also moved all the seedling trays outside to get some real sun

1. Essential Fatty Acids in Sabja Seeds Promotes Weight Loss
Sabja Seeds contain fatty acids for weight loss
Sabja seed oils contain approximately 50% linoleic acid, 22% linolenic acid, 15% oleic acid and 8% unsaturated fatty acids.
Scientifically, this is a good blend of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids.
The 50% content of linolenic acid in the sabja seeds offers it a good content of omega 6 fatty acids which are considered good fatty acids and also offer anti-inflammatory properties which help in curbing inflammation and obesity in the human body.
Research says that conjugated linoleic acid cast an anti-obesity effect by reducing energy intake, increasing basal metabolic rate, inhibiting the development of fat cells and suppressing fat production and stimulating breakdown of fats [2].
Evidences Proving the Role of Essential Fatty Acids in Weight Loss
Also, according to a study published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2004 revealed that daily supplementation with Conjugated linoleic acid for 1 year resulted in the fat loss of 6-9% in healthy overweight individuals [3].
Furthermore, another study published in the same journal talks about CLA supplementation that can bring about modest weight loss [4].
Thus, it is a proven fact that consuming sabja seeds for weight loss daily will provide you with an excellent mixture of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids which will help you steer clear of inflammation and thus help in weight loss.

Dietary Fibre in Sabja Seeds help in weight loss
Research on the long-term dietary pattern of various individuals clearly indicates that fibre intake is directly proportional to weight loss [5].
This means that greater the fibre intake a person follows, more is the weight loss they can achieve.
For weight loss, sabja seeds’ content of dietary fibres promotes the feeling of satiety along with decreasing the absorption of fats and carbohydrates in the body.
It also promotes proper functioning of the gut hormones while aiding healthy and consistent weight loss.
Along with weight loss, sabja seeds fibre content are also found to improve metabolic [6] and cardiovascular health.
Research also suggests that sabja seeds contain around 80g of dietary fibre per 100g of seeds [7].
The dietary fibre under discussion is found to be soluble which helps in controlling appetite, slowing of the digestion of food and regulation of bowel movement.
3. Sabja Seeds helps in controlling appetite
Sabja seeds control appetite
As already discussed, sabja seeds are rich in soluble dietary fibre and around 100g of sweet basil seeds provide 80g dietary fibre.
Sabja seeds soaked in water absorbs approximately 4 times the amount of water as unsoaked seeds.
When soaked, sabja seeds swell to around 20-40% their original size and convert in the form of a gel-like substance.
Consuming this gel before meals help in appetite control thereby reducing calorie intake.
It also slows down prior to meals helps in appetite control and reduces subsequent calorie intake.
It slows down the activity of digestive enzymes, improves blood sugar control and regulates gut hormones to send satiety signals to the brain.
According to a study published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine 2016 to determine whether dietary fibre content in sabja seeds help in weight loss in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients [8],
it was revealed that consumption of sabja seeds led to significant decrease in body weight, fat mass, and BMI.
4. Sabja Seeds Normalizes Blood Sugar
Sabja Seeds Help in reducing Blood Sugar
We all know that serious health conditions like diabetes and insulin resistance are aftermaths of obesity, which when developed affect the blood sugar making it a never-ending process.
The gel formed by sabja seeds which we discussed in the above section is known to slow down the action of carbohydrate degrading enzymes, which leads to slow breakdown of carbohydrates in the diet which subsequently releases glucose slowly in the bloodstream.
According to a research published in Biomed and Pharmacotherapy 2016, showed that sabja seeds have the potential to lower the blood sugar levels in the body [9].
5. Sabja Seeds are Low Cal & High Nutrient Substance
Sabja seeds are low in calories
Another highly attractive aspect of sabja seeds is that they are low in calories and high on vital nutrients.
They are rich in carbohydrates most of which are soluble dietary fibres that are not digested in the body and enhance the level of satiety.
Sabja seeds are an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin B-complex, vitamin E & K, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and iron – all nutrients being essential for weight loss and management.
So rather than using weight loss supplements (fat burner) and face the after effects of their usage [10], it is always better to go for natural weight loss aiding substances which do not pose any ill effects that provide other health benefits also.
Did you Know?
Like other seeds, sabja seeds also secrete essential oils and these oils contain more than almost 200 therapeutic compounds rich in flavonoids, phytosterols, polyphenols, triterpines, alkaloids.
Let us also tell you that each of these compounds contributes to the medicinal properties of sabja seeds.

Daylilies making an appearance. These are the common orange ones you find in ditches whose blossoms truly only last one day each. They proliferate rapidly and make great pass-along plants from divisions of the clumps. In fact, these right here came from a neighbor who had to clear the space in his yard and needed to get rid of them. And HE got them from ME about 20 years ago when I needed space to plant a bush (still ringed with daylilies).

Signs of life from one of the spent mums I hauled back from the green waste dumpster this past fall. Plopped them into one of the raised beds and covered with straw for the winter. If they made it, great, I'd transplant them elsewhere once they leafed out. If not then they could enrich the soil. Win-win. I think this one was bright yellow iirc.

Attacked this old rusty metal garden structure with a wire brush yesterday and hit it with rust converter this morning. It had originally been kind of a surgeon's green color and oh no...I really like it in black (the color the converter turned it). Unfortunately if I leave it black I'm going to have to change its location as it would get really hot in all day summer sun here and burn the vines. I have one peony left in my shady side yard...maybe I could use this as a support for that? Hmmm...

I picked this folding support up in the fall when it had been left in the alley for the metal scrap collectors. It was rusty and the paint had mostly peeled off and I intended to address that, but never got around to it. Since I was taking care of the bird structure already, now was the time. I don't know exactly what it supported before (bird bath?) But it's going to hold a big pot for me.

Ice cube tray half-filled with frozen water ready.

Add the poppy seeds on top. I'm using a big pinch because these are seeds I saved myself and I don't know how good the germination will be.

Fill the rest of the way with water and stick in the freezer for 2-4 weeks to cold stratify. I'll probably slip an open plastic bag over it once frozen to keep my food from knocking any seeds off accidentally. In a month or so I'll plant the ice cubes out in the garden (set on top of prepared soil, press in slightly, let melt).
Other than those tasks it's mostly a laundry day today. I do have the native plants program to attend tonight at the public library. I was told there will be free seeds, which is fantastic. Just hope that some of them are part-shade/shade so they can join the other natives I'm encouraging in the side yard.
#gardening#spring emergences#maintenance tasks#ice cube method for poppies#programs at your public library#this one required registration and is full/has a waiting list soi'm glad the program coordinator was at the seedswap and helped me register
