Reykjadalur Hot Spring, Iceland. This hot river near the town of Hveragerdi, about an hour's drive from Reykjavik is one of the best hot pools. The easy hike takes about 1 hour to reach the river from the parking. On a clear day, the view is awesome with mountains and steam rising from the ground. The river is free to use. There are no changing rooms but that should not deter you to visit this natural spring. To know more about such spectacular spots in Iceland, follow us at @simplyoffbeat. First item on the bucketlist is traveling along Iceland's Ring Road! (Talk about a road trip!!!) Take at LEAST a week off work and treat yourself to this incredible experience. Explore Iceland, get right up close to it's third tallest waterfall, soak in a natural hotspring, try not to let your chin hit the ground as you see the crater lake, experience the natural wonder of the Northern Lights, and maybe even stumble across a 'Game of Thrones' set! . . Top tips for travelling in Iceland in a van no blog/vlog or website told me before!!!
Tumblr media
CAMPING OUT
1.       Before Buying the campingcard.is look on their website make note of the dates the card is valid at each campsite. We got to Iceland in early May and realise at least a half of the campsites weren’t available until the 1st of June and to pay for campsites as you go it was from 1200 krona up to 2000 krona which adds up.
2.       All these different places were telling me you could pull up anywhere park your car and that is it. This MAY have been the case in 2014-2015 but now in peak season alone, tourists out number Icelanders 7 to 1 which means almost everywhere you can see have a no camping sign and you have to park in campsites only. Also being in a campsite means you have toilets and places to wash your dishes and shower so well worth it.
3.       Campsites are literally everywhere. If you get the camping.is book and you can see that there is nothing around Jokulsarlon right up to Höfn or similar places don’t stress, there are campsites maybe every 15-30 mins along the road not listed on maps and they are clearly mapped out. Iceland had some of the best and easiest road signs.
4.       Choose a comfy van!!! We chose cosy campers as they had space and had comfy beds, we saw other people’s vans everywhere and thought there is no way we could have slept in that for 17 nights.

 Food!!
1.       Everywhere will tell you to stock up at bonus cause you save heaps, that’s what we did and we thought it was good. We bought packs of noodles for about 35 krona a pack (approx 50c AUD). What we didn’t know what there was bonuses all around the country that we didn’t see on maps and they aren’t just in Reykjavik. We bought so much canned beans and pasta, rice and noodles and by the end of it we were over it. If we had actually checked where the bonuses are and not just looks for it on maps we could have bought enough food for the first few days then decided what we liked and didn’t like.
2.       Everywhere tells you that eating out is so pricey and I couldn’t agree more, I actually think I wasn’t prepared for it until I walked into subway and a normal sub I get at home for $8 AUD costed over $20 and there was only one type of cheese to choose from. I didn’t see anywhere telling me that the food is the best ever. I have been to heaps of places and I’ve never eaten food that good. It was worth every cent and if I got something that tasty back in Australia it would be the same price.

Planning the trip
1.       We picked out main places we wanted to go before going to Iceland and put them on a map we printed from home, but because we couldn’t predict where we would be, we didn’t plan a full itinerary. We got up every morning and decided where we would try to make it to and then checked out what we could do in between. This was awesome because it meant we didn’t rush the first part of our trip then end up with heaps of time because we knew we were in the right place.
2.       You’re going to find things you’ve never even heard of and all places of interest have a symbol which is clearly marked on signs, you’ll get to know it well and it gives you a heads up that there is something interesting
3.       DONT GO OUTSIDE OF MARKED OUT AREAS. because tourists have trampled over so many great parts of nature, the government in Iceland have roped off sections to preserve the moss and gardens. We saw on multiple occasions people crossing these boundaries because there is no one around to police it but other tourists and even locals really frown upon it. I know myself and partner were angry when we saw people disrespecting someone else’s country and we weren’t alone. People are afraid to tell you off.

MONEY
Everywhere says on the net that they use card and not cash. Which is all good and well but we struggled right up until the week before deciding on what we should use because our credit card would charge insane fees. We ended up getting a travel card from commonwealth bank and transferring euros onto it and using that. They also do accept cash in lots of places and it’s handy to have because in some campsites you need 50 and 100-krona coins to wash your clothes or take a shower.
