Changing your name is absolute horse shit and here’s why:

So I got married two months ago now and decided to change my last name to my husband’s surname. Now, I’ve always been on the fence about doing this, even as a kid because I’m quite proud of my last name and it didn’t seem fair that I had to give it up based on traditional gender roles- at least in North America it is, I know Europe is much more lax on keeping your last name which is amazing. Go Europe!

After a year-long debate of going back and forth, I came to the conclusion it would be easier in the long run if we have the same last name for continuity, kids, and helping with overall confusion people have when you and your spouse don’t have the same last name- not to mention he and his family really wanted me to have their last name (which I know is sort of a lousy excuse). But all-in-all I have embraced my new name and am very excited about it.

Now, I’m not an America citizen, but we reside in the States, so I knew going into this name change process it was going to be a pain in the butt with having to change my green card and Canadian passport on top of my state-side documents. And I knew government processes can be tedious and very unclear, so I was ready to face the music in that sense.

I had it planned out: Change social media first because that shit is a matter of editing your name. Change social security in the States so I could change my driver’s license and bank accounts and then after that, deal with the international stuff- green card, passport and known traveller ID. And I’d officially be a Mrs. by Christmas and good to visit my family for the holidays.

That’s not what happened. 

Facebook had confirmed my name sometime ago and wouldn’t let me change it without a copy of my marriage license as proof. 

Social security wouldn’t process my application because I had provided copies and not the original pieces (even though online it says notarized copies are fine) and then said that I had to complete my green card name change first (which was not clarified anywhere online). 

So I filed the green card application, which was $760, and now am patiently awaiting my appointment date to complete the filing process. Yay to small victories!

The passport has been the real kicker though:

The application requires you to have your guarantor, a Canadian citizen with a valid passport that can confirm your identity, to sign the physical passport photos- which I had to go to a specific store to get Canadian sized photos for in the States, and also sign your application. However, my guarantor lives in Canada, so I had to send the entire physical application to them to fill out and then have them take it to the passport office- theoretically anyway. 

The only problem is the Canadian Postal Service is on strike- Great! So I couldn’t send the application via post office. I had to send it through a courier service. However, FedEx couldn’t find my guarantor’s address, so I took it to UPS whom did not ask me how I wanted it sent and tried to send it through the postal service only to have it returned to me for not having the proper border declaration forms done. Which I obviously never completed seeing as the man who helped me at the store never asked. Thanks for nothing UPS. So a week and a half went to waste:

I then decided to try my luck at FedEx again with a different address on it. FedEx couldn't find that one either- and at this point we have hit the 6 week deadline for getting my passport processed before my desired traveling date. This is my last chance. So we change the address to a FedEx store in my guarantor’s city where they can pick it up after paying the express fee of $93 (thank you UPS for the delay).

Today, I got word that my guarantor received my passport and took it to the passport office!- Only to tell her they cannot file it.

They can’t file it because I don’t have a letter giving her permission to file it on my behalf, a copy of my driver’s license with my new last name on it, and a detailed list of my previous employers. All of which is news to me! I was not told I needed said things to file- believe me I triple checked before I sent my application with my damn passport and birth certificate through the mail. 

So no biggie right/ I just need to add those things and have my guarantor file it again. But if you recall, I can’t change my driver’s license until I change my social security card, and I can’t do that until I change my green card which is pending on the government. 

So we’re back to square 1 after a month and a half of starting this.

All in all, this was so much more of a pain than I anticipated and has made me wish I hadn’t changed my name.
