De Algemene Verwarring #110 - 15 April 2024
Episode one hundred and ten of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, April 15, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below is Claire Mahoney, the woman behind the project Thistle Group, who has just recently collaborated with P. Wits to release a 7" on the I Dischi Del Barone label from Sweden. The 49th release on the label that only releases singles. Both artists are from New-Zealand. Thistle Group until now only released a cassette on 20 copies and a 7" on the Soft Abuse label. P. Wits might be a bit more known thanks to the 7" release on Belgian label Knotwilg Records. And it's an excellent single, maybe one of the highlights in the IDDB catalog. But contrary to what I said in the radio show, the most recent releases on the label were not less interesting to me when I look at the list now. I was under the impression that the last few releases were less appealing to me, but there's releases from Troth, from Eyes Of The Amaryllis, 番長 Taste, and the very last one was the harsh noise banger from Zwangsbeglucktertum, so what the hell was I thinking, seriously. Excellent label, excellent series of singles, buy them all if you can find them. Also, IDDB50 might be the last one, not sure about that, and I would be extremely sad if the label stops, but knowing that in the beginning they were 8 euro and now they are already 12 euro I can understand why it's not exactly rewarding to release singles... You really have to be a total freak like me for buying them and an even more total freak to put your money in such releases. Anyway, it's been quite a ride, so thanks to Matthias for all these wonderful releases.
Other music in this episode comes from surf rockers Krontjong Devils, ukulele expert Fabian, Les Yss Boys, Plexi Stad, The Drin, Honey Radar, Magazine, Desenterradas, Myriam Gendron, Brainman, AUS, Théorème, Juho Toivonen, and more! And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!

US freaks can cop the new Mines 45 from C/Site Recordings and stock up on some other bangers whilst yer at it. Pro-tip - that Glands Of External Secretion 7″ on IDDB is seriously under-rated.

2020 IDDB Progress and Findings
The International Dupuytren Data Bank is now in its fifth year with 4465 enrollees from 48 countries. There’s now enough data to begin looking for trends and new insights.
We’ve begun collecting blood samples from select enrollees for the Dupuytren Blood Biomarker Pilot Study. Blood sample collection is on hold until COVID-19 related restrictions ease: we’re hopeful and rebooking blood draw appointments for June.
There are three good things coming out of the COVID-19 challenge:
One: There’s now a little extra time for you to enroll in the IDDB for a chance to participate in the Dupuytren Blood Biomarker Pilot Study! If you haven’t signed up, now is the time: Enroll in the IDDB
Two: You have a little extra time to browse the progress report of the IDDB: April 2020 IDDB Progress Report
Three: The IDDB follow up survey is about to go out to all IDDB enrollees. You don’t want to miss this! Log in and make sure your contact information is up to date: Current enrollees confirm your contact information
Stay tuned and stay well!

Audio
Absolutely brilliant new LP from Komare, out now via Penultimate Press. The band, consisting of Dominic Goodman and Peter Blundell, is 2/3 of Mosquitoes, and until now have mostly been living in the shadow of their sister band. The self-titled tape by Komare was good, and I liked the waterlogged Suicide vibe of the 7″ on IDDB better, but neither prepared me for the immersive and melted The Sense of Hearing. The sound falls somewhere in between the more abstract songs from C.I.A. Debutante’s The Landlord and Maurizio Bianchi’s Regel or Endometrio. Unlike C.I.A. Debutante, there aren’t really beats to keep things afloat, and it’s not a full fledged grey-out like Bianchi provides. What emerges is a deceivingly precise and measured album of mind-bending electronic density. Clipped moans hover to the surface, and static swirls and dissipates as deep bass tones drone beneath. Single out any track and the effect is muted; sit through an entire side and it’s smothering, almost calming in how The Sense of Hearing distorts reality and provides an audial dose of secondhand weed smoke. Each side builds up with an almost maddening patience, and if you blink you’ll miss the point; attention is rewarded, as is volume, and if you wanna get high that’ll only help, but Komare’s got plenty to go ‘round. The erudite approach and execution of the band is impressive, but the effect of their music is as mentally freeing as it is demanding. It’s been the sound of summer 2020 around here, the most reliable way to unwind after days increasingly filled with and defined by uncertainty. Like the label says, The Sense of Hearing isn’t “necessarily one for the beauty seekers,” but for those in dire need of a truly deep trip, look no further. Stunner!
Listen to side one of Komare’s The Sense of Hearing on Bandcamp, and grab the LP there or direct through Penultimate Press (scope that limited-to-30 “reverse edition” LP!). Digital Regress also has copies in the US. Mosquitoes put out a new record, Minus Objects, this year, too, and in my estimation it’s their best yet; listen and buy that direct from the tastemakers at ever/never records.

2020: The year of solving the puzzle!
Tumblr media
I’m optimistic 2020 will be the year of progress solving the Dupuytren puzzle. Dupuytren seems at times a jigsaw puzzle with too many pieces. Pieces from other puzzles. Pieces that look as though they should fit, but don’t. Pieces that belong in one location, but seem to fit in many different locations.
One strategy to solve a jigsaw puzzle is to first find the four corner pieces. They give clues to look for the next pieces. We already have two corner pieces of the Dupuytren puzzle: the biology of tissues removed at surgery and the demographics of people who have developed Dupuytren. The third corner piece of the puzzle is a snapshot of Dupuytren activity in the blood to predict whether Dupuytren will or won’t develop, whether it will or won’t progress, and whether it does or doesn’t respond to medical treatment. This piece will come from the blood biomarker study of the IDDB, the International Dupuytren Data Bank. The final fourth corner piece is a list of medicines to modify Dupuytren biology to prevent it from developing, progressing, or recurring after a corrective procedure. We need the first three corners of the puzzle in place to figure out where to start looking for the final fourth corner piece.
The pilot study – the third corner piece – is underway. Email invitations are going out now to potential blood draw participants enrolled in the IDDB. Of the 4200 IDDB enrollees, 82 met the stringent selection criteria based on the age of onset, locations of disease, family history details, and home address. Of these, 50 will be confirmed on a first-come-first-serve basis. 50 more participants without Dupuytren or a family history of Dupuytren will act as controls.
If you enrolled in the IDDB study and meet the selection criteria, emails are going out.
If you don’t get an invitation, don’t panic. This is a small pilot study, not a large definitive study. This is the study that we need to do to get the ball rolling for the definitive study – to provide preliminary data to bring to the NIH to make the case for the NIH to set up funding for large definitive studies. This pilot study is critical to progress in Dupuytren research, which currently has no federal funding. It’s taken years of fundraising and saving to meet the $400,000 laboratory budget for this pilot study. Larger scale research needs large federal grants. This study is the cornerstone of the path to jumpstart federal funding for the next research with far more participants.
This work has many moving parts. It’s taken sustained hard work and sustained financial support from the Dupuytren community to get this far. We are here. It is happening! I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has supported and who continues to support this work. Your participation – your ideas, your enrollment, your funding – have set the stage for 2020 to be the year we start solving the Dupuytren puzzle – together.
Thanks and Happy New Year!

Servire. The Barone Zone
Tumblr media
Latest trio of seven inchers from the inimitable I Dischi Del Barone, all presented here at the risk of this site becoming one positive advertisement for the label. Sickest label going, though; massage your brain to these latest hits.
The Never Quartet, “1.001.006″ b/w “1.001.007″: Brainchild of the Dead C’s Michael Morley, wherein he plays three mic’d acoustic guitars propped up horizontally by more wood. The unconventional setup allows Morley to utilize “the unique conductive tonal qualities of wood creating an organic amplifier effect.” The results are flooring, especially the rich bass-y drone that pops open the B-side. Could be lazily likened to Sunn O))) without the distortion, or the swell of cicadas from late summer, but it’s almost definitely the warmest, most satisfying 7″ you’ll hear this year. Shuts down the overactive brain waves and forces something nourishing down your gullet. The size/time limitations keep the tracks from overstaying their welcome, though I’m not sure that’d be a real issue with the Never Quartet. As with all music of this ilk: play loud. My favorite of the three 7″s featured here.
People Skills, Magnet Hill: Jesse Dewlow returns with his People Skills project in a big way this year, releasing this 7″ and two tape releases on Alien Passengers and All Gone (the former is sold out; the latter is still available here). Can’t comment on the tapes just yet, but the all-instrumental 7″ is two guitar-led arrangements in favor of late night isolation, each followed by a gorgeous locked groove. In some ways this is a separation of what would typically be layered on a People Skills song; the silt’s settled in the muddy pond Dewlow’s used to communicating through. Tape hiss and other detritus accompany the guitar, the audible presence coloring the longer tracks with a particularly lonesome hue. "Three Smiling Dogs In a Dream” reminds me of Nothing People, and "Summer 1978,” where Dewlow flashes some chops, kinda sounds like Harvey Milk’s “I Feel Miserable.” There are few better musical moments this year than when “Summer 1978″ closes out with its otherworldly locked groove. I like what Dewlow’s done with People Skills thus far, but it looks like it’s a much more mature and rewarding project now.
Various artists, Porcelain Summer: The idea here was to get 12 artists to contribute one minute or so of music for a compilation to celebrate 5 years of I Dischi Del Barone’s existence. Such a limiting idea runs the risk of stifling the execution, but Porcelain Summer is a pretty strong showing. Tracks by Brannten Schnüre, Vital Idles, Red Brut and the Ivytree stand out to me after several listens, and the arrangement of the songs on the B-side has a purposeful flow to it. Could say the same of the A-side if it weren’t for JJ Ulius’ uninspired 19-second stall, but who’s gonna gripe about 11 outta 12? Lots of good/great artists on here, some of whom I wouldn’t mind seeing on a future, non-compilation IDDB release. A couple of copies on opaque dark green vinyl were available direct, but they’re long gone; black’ll do just fine.
Order in the US from Careful Catalog or Fusetron, or go direct to IDDB; the price is basically the same either way.
