At Autism Actually, we primarily use identity-first language as we recognise Autism as an integral part of our identity and not a separate aspect of our humanity. Often when the 'Autism Spectrum' is discussed, individuals may mention terms such as "severe end of the Autism Spectrum" and "high-functioning" end. For us, the Autism Spectrum is a multidimensional model that has infinite variations and not just a linear measure of severity. Furthermore, you cannot be more or less Autistic; you are either Autistic or not. 🧠♾🌈💛 [Text: When I hear “Autism Spectrum” I see infinite variations of Autistic expression, diverse experiences that cannot be compared and should be celebrated as unique, Autistically human perspectives. From an artistic perspective, it’s like the colour spectrum: we each share primary colours, but the way they interact with one another leads to a variety of hues and shades. Shadia Hancock. There's always a lot of debate on identity, whether it's person/identity first, autistic/aspie, cis/other gender, etc. I personally find it distasteful that someone is trying to tell me that the way I choose to identify myself is wrong or harmful. I'm fine if someone wants to make a reasoned display of what a specific identity is and why they picked it as their identity, I'll consider the viewpoint. I'm not fine when those arguments say that every other point of view is wrong and everyone should identify that one way or else x (division in the community, harming others in the community, 'only hurting yourself by not using y identity', etc). It's my choice, not 'the community's' or anyone else's. Image description: Angel on a cliff with text reading "I was born how I am. Even the grand artisan had to first get off his bum and decide to begin. I might even argue that it is less the finished product that proves his craftsmanship and more of his forged ability to choose, ongoingly, to begin and learn that marks him a real and honest crafter. #ateacherpracticesteaching #asportsplayerpracticessports #therighteouspracticerighteousness #identityfirst #because #identityprecedesperformance #gospellogic (at Sunland Park)

Our latest meme is a poem titled 'Identity-first Autistic', highlighting the reason why we at Autism Actually support the use of identity first language when referring to Autism. [Text reads: I am proud to call myself Autistic It defines me And reminds me To love myself And love my brain To not think myself abnormal or insane To accept my difference My diversity Makes sense And for all intents Is my personality My individuality My quirkiness My morals My 'black and white' My 'wrong and right' My 'darkness and light' It helps me keep sight Of my passions What really matters To me My loyalty To fight for equality For not just me But for others too Not to advocate on behalf of them But to lift their voices up I may come off as blunt or rough But I mean well I care I have empathy I have feelings I am different And that's wonderful My diagnosis Is not just a label But a way of describing me Positively I would rather be Autistic than A "freak", "abnormal", "odd", "strange" Autism is a part of my cultural identity As much as being half-Arab and LGBT+ I will always fight for justice And help others I want people to see I am not afraid being me I am not ashamed Of my brain My heart Or my wiring Without diversity The world would be bland Stuck in a box No innovation Or creativity No one to challenge us Or our views We need to be proud of being ourselves Rather than hiding in our shells So yes, I am Autistic, Autism defines who I am, And I am just one of many stories.] [Image description: Blocks of text over an image of a woman with arms stretched out, against a sunset.] #Autism #IdentityFirst #Diversity #Autisticpride #ActuallyAutistic #prolabels #AutismActually https://www.instagram.com/p/B2vB4X4hQJ0/?igshid=4rhzv2hftwx8

That's one of the first things dictators tend to do, remove the books that show different viewpoints and worldviews. Identity is usually one of those things, whether it's political, sexual, or religious. When people say person with autism, it's starting that same kind of divorce in ideas.
