okay so initial thoughts on honkai star rail after i played like half of the tutorial bit this morning before work

first off, for the record, i have not played or heard much of anything about honkai impact 3rd and i have only played genshin impact pretty much since launch so my expectations were "genshin but sci-fi fantasy" but i can say that's not quite what i got (here’s a read more if you don’t care lol)

- immediately i notice that the graphics fidelity is gorgeous, very sleek and clean - it startled me a bit but also made me happy that the lip flaps are synced to the english dub! it seemed to flow really well even with the expression changes. the dialogue system doesn't seem all too different from genshin or. any other system like that. but it's got a pretty nice polish on the transitions between different states - the animation in the cutscenes and battles are really good, clearly they had a real talented team working on them. the characters feel so bouncy and expressive and it is pretty darn satisfying - the UI and interactive language is pretty much exactly the same as genshin with a sci-fi coat of paint. that's not a bad thing necessarily but like. it's pretty obvious - so the way combat and elemental powers work is very different from genshin, which frankly i should have expected, given this is a turn-based rpg. and i shouldn't have too much trouble with it, since turn-based rpgs are kind of a staple in my game roster, but for some reason i had trouble connecting with it. obviously finishing the tutorial would help, but it didn't feel as intuitive as i expected elements are presented in more of a traditional jrpg type of way where there are clear weaknesses you can exploit on enemies if you attack with a certain element. idk if i fully mean this but i think it kind of ruins part of the fun of discovering an enemy's weakness when the game itself just. tells you what it is off the bat also the types are weird in that they have pretty static effects in terms of what they do, the variability in moves is probably also explained further in character profiles but i haven't found how to look at that yet bkjljl - i'm fascinated by the ideas of Quantum and Imaginary types. what does that even mean. how do those manifest - i think it was a bit of a bold move to start the game off with two random characters talking about the world as if things are normal and known, and then having them influence your player character into. being in the plot not that i didn't like kafka and silver wolf. in fact i love both of them a lot. but i also had no context and had no goddamn idea what was going on so i was thrown pretty off-guard first thing which isn't exactly the greatest first impression lol - why is she named March 7th. does anyone know. is there a joke lost in translation or is it because she's like a pseudo-mascot character or. what - speaking of march actually i really want to like her but so far her character reeks of "hi i'm a girl". her skill is called "The Power of Cuteness" and one of her abilities is called "Girl Power" and so far her personality is cute, kind, and kinda stupid. it's a bit much. but she's neat - i have no big opinions on dan heng except he's neat and people keep saying he's the kazuha of star rail bc windy maple leaf boys but they're wrong bc dan heng has a stabby not a slicey and he can only hit one person at a time while kazoo thrives on the multi-hit AoE damage - i do love that the MC's weapon is just. a future baseball bat. that they get to smack people really hard with. no element, just big smack - oh yeah hyv loves to queerbait i guess cuz that wasn't CPR honey the twitter crowd wasn't kidding - i can’t think of anything else rn cuz it’s past midnight but star rail is neat and i like the little train rabbit dog mascot it’s cute and i wanna get past the tutorial hkjbjk

KDL3 Stage 1-1: Tulip's stage!

I'm approaching these with a similar format to my KDL2 posts, except divided by stage rather than level since each stage is very unique in KDL3. This also means this is going to take me forever LOL. In terms of standalone ability drawings, each one will contain Kirby AND Gooey, since they have the same movesets. They're only placed next to each other for comparison though since like I said they can't BOTH wear the necklace at the same time. So far I think Gooey likes Spark the best!

This level has Rick and Nago, but I never used Rick since it was too risky-- too much of a chance of him accidentally stepping on the flowers!! Nago is preferential since he has 3 jumps. I would NEVER take Gooey here unless I was playing w 2 players though. His CPU is SO bad lmao (worse than any Helper in the original Super Star if you can imagine). That's how it is for the entire game quite frankly, but I REALLY like the idea of Kirby and Gooey going on the whole adventure together, so I'm pretending I did this whole thing with 2 people LOL.

I can tell you a little more about Nago since this post is very Nago centric! He's 19 years old and is honestly a completely normal guy... other than being able to turn into a giant cat anyways LOL. He can't use copy abilities for himself, but he's very crafty. He likes to help Kirby come up with new methods and angles to use his abilities. He has some difficulties befriending the other animal friends since he feels like he can't relate to them, so for now he's only friends with Kirby and Rick. He doesn't like when Kirby chooses to hang out with other friends over him. I guess that makes him n Rick more alike than I realized LOL. He is prone to expressing his emotions in catlike ways since he's a werecat.

I don't have much to say about this level's resident character, Tulip. She's a flower nymph, and she has 4... kids? counterparts? I don't know what they are to her. None of them transform, and the little flowers don't talk or anything, they just have eyes. Though, they can move underground by tunneling I think. Only between areas without grass though! They're very particular.

Ramblings abt Nago and calico cats in general under the cut since I have a special interest in cats and genetics:

So if you were unaware, calico cats (and tortoiseshell cats) are almost always female IRL! Thsi is because 'red' (orange) and black fur colors are both linked to the x chromosome, so a cat can only have 1 of those 2 per x chromosome. If the cat has only 1 x chromosome, it can only be red or black, never both. So this means that even though he's a male character, Nago must have 2 x chromosomes for his coat color to make sense. I think one could interpret him as transmasc, intersex, or they could say he has Klinefelter syndrome or some other chromosomal condition? So I chose to depict him as transmasc in my gijinka AU since I'm transmasc and he was my favorite animal friend when I was a kid!!

Did the designers working on KDL3 intend for him to be trans? Probably not, I think it was just an oversight. They wanted a funny cat character and calico is a very cute and popular color for cats! Though idk it is possible he was intentionally transgender since Kirby's probably like, the queerest popular nintendo mascot I can think of?? If he's gender neutral is it that farfetched for Nago to be trans or intersex? I don't know, I'm not his original designer.

Anyways another funny fact abt cats that Nago's designers might've known-- cats squint/close their eyes as a sign of trust in others! So Nago's eyes are usually shut because he's showing Kirby that he can trust him! (yes that means he's VERY upset when Kirby uses the needle ability or switches to a different animal friend cuz his eyes widen. TBF, if my friend was shooting chunks out of his face and turning them into needles, I'd be pretty distressed too LOL). I really like this detail cuz it means at least one person on the design team rlly rlly loved cats lol.

hoshihina thoughts

due to my hoshihina brainrot disease i’ve been thinking about them a lot and i have this whole spiel about it but i am going to try and organize my thoughts into this like. essay or wtv. ok so:

here is why i love hoshihina

1. They have many similarities/things in common

They’re both abnormally short for their field, and working through that disadvantage is something that unites the two. Also, they’re both incredibly strong-willed and know that they have to work that much harder to be the players they want to be, and do it anyway.

It’s clear in the Kamomedai vs Karasuno match that they both have great respect and admiration for each other as well, which ties into some of my other points, but basically they have these experiences that link them and put them on equal footing.

They also both jump super high obviously so there’s the whole ‘flying’ thing they have in common which is just. blows kiss magnifique

2. The imagery

i may be biased as a bird lover, but i adore the imagery associated with these two. both kamomedai and karasuno are schools whose mascots are omnivorous birds – both scavengers, both flying animals (like how hoshiumi and hinata ‘fly’ by jumping). Crows and gulls are almost like two sides of the same coin in my eyes. Crows are the scavengers of the land, and seagulls (generally) by the sea – but that doesn’t mean you won’t find them elsewhere too. Gulls are often seen inland and crows can be spotted by the shore fairly often as well. They’re also opposite colors which always gets me like, black and white,, they compliment each other,,,

In a similar fashion, because of the seagull association Hoshiumi also has a connection to the sea/ocean. Hinata also develops a connection to the shore through his time in Brazil learning to play beach volleyball. So in a way they’re also both associated with the beach, which I love. Plus there’s the whole ‘Hinata’s the sun’ thing which is widely accepted and that also tends to remind me of the beach, cuz sun + beach + ocean all kinda go together.

3. The implications of Hoshiumi waiting

god this bit is like. HHH it’s one of the main reasons i love them. When Hinata is taken off the court because of his fever during the Kamo v Kara match, Hoshiumi yells out to him saying “Hinata Shouyou! I’ll be waiting for you!”

His teammate (Hirugami Sachirou) responds to this by pointing out that Hinata’s not going to be back before the end of the match, and Hoshiumi then says (likely paraphrasing bc I didn’t screenshot this part) “Duh, I didn’t mean this match.” So like, here we have Hoshiumi declaring that he has so much respect for Hinata that he will be waiting for his next match against him.

THEN, there’s the implications you get from that. Karasuno doesn’t make it to Nationals the next year, Date Tech does. And because that would be Hoshiumi’s third and final year of high school, he never gets the face-off he’s supposedly been waiting for. So the implication is that he was still waiting for a match with Hinata, even throughout Hinata’s time in Brazil.

When they finally get their chance, it’s during the Adlers vs Jackals match nearly SIX YEARS after that first spring Nationals. It was January 2013 that first spring, and it’s November 2018 when they face off again, so FIVE YEARS and TEN MONTHS. The speculation that comes with that like,,, imagine Hoshiumi waiting all that time. The waiting the feelings,, finally some good fucking food.

5. Other little moments:

“SPARKS ARE FLYING BETWEEN THE TWO SMALLEST SPIKERS!”

SPARKS!!!!! ARE FLYING!!!! CMON!! ALSO LOOK AT HOSHI’S FACE LOOK AT THAT EXPRESSION,, he looks so happy to be in a match against Hinata and Hinata looks like kind of pissed of course cuz he didn’t get the point but he’s still really revved up and like,, sparks man.

this one’s just like. look at the calmness and mutual respect in their expressions,,

THIS ONE I LOVE bc the context is that Hinata told Hoshiumi he could have ‘the little giant’ title, and initially Hoshiumi was like “IT WAS MINE IN THE FIRST PLACE!” (paraphrasing) but then he goes and LAUGHS, and after this panel (look at his face he looks SOOO happy) Kamo’s coach says something along the lines of ‘wow, i’ve never seen kourai laugh like that on court before’ !!! he’s SO happy because of Hinata that he would laugh loudly like that when he’s never done it before,,,,,,,,dude.

Then there’s these parallels that’re just like. i’ve looked at these for five hours now:

these panels are SOOOO similar and it’s just like,, the looks on their faces that are mirroring each others’ from before and those obvious similarities really make it clear that the adlers v jackals match is truly the re-match that they’ve been waiting for all this time. And Hoshiumi in the first panel and Hinata in the second panel both look simultaneously so frustrated yet so THRILLED, and like they’re really truly enjoying and loving the challenge of going up against each other.

THIS is their reaction on seeing each other for the first time in 6 years!!! Hoshiumi literally bursts out of the bathroom yelling his name with THAT look on his face, pure elation and excitement, and Hinata responds in turn by yelling his name with THAT look, also excited as hell,,,bruv.

then hoshi’s first question is this (gotta keep up their relationship built on challenge and rivalry...) and KAGEYAMAS LIKE. BRUH U ALREADY KNO but jhdghjg Hoshiumi just wants to prove to Hinata that he’s worthy by pointing out he’s still a little taller and he wants him to think he’s cool like...that shit’s so cute,,my heart

4. THIS BIT

THE INTERVIEWER ESSENTIALLY SAYS “WOW, HINATA’S A GREAT RIVAL FOR YOU” (PARAPHRASING) AND HOSHIUMI SAYS THIS??? He’s saying here that no, Hinata isn’t his rival, because they can do more as a team. They’re better as a team, it’s them against the world, like ugh it explains itself idk how to make it any more clear that Hoshiumi clearly respects and admires and loves Hinata.

Also just before this panel, Hoshiumi admits to the interviewer that he thinks Hinata might just be a little teensy-weensy bit better than him as a player at this point. LIKE how much do you have to admire someone to admit that??? to the press at that?? i’m losing it bro...

I really like analyzing pieces of art and I don’t really understand why, maybe this will help me ralizae that why, I don’t really know. I don’t know how to spell consciousness.i relaly don’t get it.

Like a month or two ago I watched a videe essay or two about ghost in the shell and those videos led me to realize that GITS was one of the best anime I’ve ever seen, which isnt saying much since I don’t watch a metric fudge ton of anime like iive seen people like my friends do. (side talk to chris about froyo). But yeah I like analysis. Its fun.

Just fucking fuck I don’t know how to word  this. Like this is just for me idk what to say. Like that is what the problem always was with spleaking my thoughts is that I had to make palatable for who the audience of my words was but now the audience of those words now is me,, but also future me, so I guess I need to make this as clear as possible. But fuck that shit. Why do I need to be required to be anyone els but who I am right now. Fuck you future me. I cant even be true to myself to myself. I really just need practice expressing myself and practice in you know the work. I really like that show sequlitis but tons of other stuff too. Before that gits analysis shit I was also planning an essay/video essay where I discuss how darth vader lost his mojo in the rouge one movie and I was gonna cite some shit. I then believed that a lot of that argument when down the crapperwhen I was reminded that there was simply someone else behind the mask in said movie but Ive understood and know for what seems like forever that an argument can always be made if u find the evidence for it and a compelling thesis. And what is a feeling you feel in a movie or any art piece than the impetus for a thesis in an analytical work. With that In mind im gonna straight copy/paste the work ive done on that subject down here right now:

I said a few enter hits back that ive understood forever that an argument is always worth it as long as you find the evidence but that isn’t necessarily true. I mean that feeling was always within my core but the people who brought it out of me were my mentors in my career endeavor, my high school teachers. Andrews and mostly Williams laid down the skeleton and the technical work behind bringing that idea out of me by teaching be the structure of paragraphs and essays and arguments and debates and what not. Gleason and yeah most definitely MOSTLY OUR GOD IN MORTAL FORM ON THIS EARTH REYNAGA brought the feeling and emotion and passion as to why that technical stuff matters out of me. They extracted that passion out of my core and said “you know that shit Andrews and Williams gave you? You can use that shit to be a fucking artist” “be an artist” reynaga told me. Be a fucking artist. Shout out to Andrews again though for teaching me world history and showing me a documentary that completely redefined how I saw myself spiritually and religiously. But yo reynaga definitely extended that spiritual side of me as well, showing to me how I responded so viscerally to the symbols and metaphors used in catholicism and catholic mass.

And yon now that I think about it, my religion probably explains a lot as to why I love analyzing shit.

Like I feel really good about myself right now but the thing is this is where I usually stop in writing my thoughts out. I don’t go back and do the hard stuff and edit for a generaller audience. I do this shit for me and me only. Which is fucking fair to do, if that you, you do you, boo boo. But that’s not me, I wannna communicate myself to an audience, I wanna create a really good work and share it, yes to eventually make a living off of, but just to accomplish what I want to accomplsuh.
