hmmm... these are the kind of questions that make me ramble on for eternity... (I’d say I’m better w/ more specific questions but those actually tend to make me ramble MORE)>w

ok, I’ve found that every person has a different way of looking at things- so:

Look at the world around you and turn it into art.

Anything that catches your interest. Just observe and draw and practice and explore.

Do life sketches whenever you can/feel like and if you caannt draw, try to visually ‘sketch’ something- like, look at a tree and trace it with your eyes or finger (its a rather good way to pass the time if you’re waiting in a line or something) 

(tbh tho I’ve made this such a habit that idk how to explain it better than this.)

sketch and don’t be afraid of ‘messing up’ just doodle and you’ll find things out better than any artist can teach you.

Challenge yourself, but don’t jump too far.

I think one thing that discourages most new artists is, they try to do difficult things right off the bat.

Just, start simple, and once you get comfortable, increase the challenge level a bit.

Ex) Drawing from your imagination is hard- use references. Sketch something out a couple of times before you try to paint it

Try different mediums.

Sometimes, when you try one medium, you’ll learn techniques that can work with your old medium and you’ll improve in both OR, you’ll find your New Best Friend.

There’s a lot of things that you’re really only gonna get from lots and lots of practice and study.

which leads me to: some of the tutorials I personally learned a lot from:

Youtuber- Mark Crilley (he’s mainly a manga artist- I mostly liked his perspective drawing work....)

Youtube- speed drawing videos, I mainly gleamed certain motions, layering techniques, shading techniques and stuff from those, but they are a fun way to try and figure out how something works on your own. 

a bunch of library books, (the one I best remember is Mythical Beasts: An Artist's Field Guide, I think I checked it out like, 10 times as a kid)

like seriously get any library book that catches your eye and practice away.

there’s LOTS of internet tutorials and- tbh, you really just gonna look up things on google sometimes. (I’ve got mine under the tag ‘tutorials’ if you’re interested, & I reblog a few art tutorials onto my main whenever I come across some good ones.

Go to art exhibits- look at your favorite pieces and figure out What makes them your favorites. Sketch them if you can.

if you’re interested in doing comic-art, I doooo think there was a few books by Stan Lee, & I found a library book that went IN DEPTH about DC’s Shazam’s history and it also went into how many of the comics were made, showed storyboarding, all that stuff- (it was super cool & I learned a lot from it despite it not aaactually being any kind of tutorial book... so... look for books like that too.)

Draw your own tutorials (&/or speed videos, if you can.)

No seriously. I’ve found that, every time I’ve tried to explain my process, I’ve discovered those little stumbling points I would just gloss over normally. Slowing down and really examining Why you do something the way you do will help you refine where you might want to improve!

... .. anyway Yea. I think I’ve done my best to provide tips and references. (tho if you want me to ramble about like- the actual drawing part, you’re gonna have to ask something a bit more specific, cause I could PRobably write a whole book about it.) :P

4. name three authors that were influential to your work and tell why

donna tartt - the way she wrote characters caring about each other, the way she writes drunk characters, but mostly her descriptions, really changed the way i write. i’m pretty verbose but in my writing i try to be really succinct and bare bones - after reading the secret history, i sort of fell in love with descriptive writing and imagery? see this excerpt from a fic i wrote write after i finished tsh:

Jehan’s apartment is a hodgepodge of art and kitsch that clash so violently as to become something close to beautiful to look at, like Mount Vesuvius mid-eruption or perhaps an abandoned doll factory. One wall is almost tasteful, boasting a scattering of Grantaire’s work—one or two photographs of Gavroche done in close-up, disinterested teenage pout, wide hazel eyes hooded in disdain; an abstract painting called “selfie”; a collage of polaroids that, on closer observation, reveal themselves to be bits and pieces of their friends: a cigarette between Bossuet’s lips from before he quit, the fraying sleeve of Jehan’s favorite sweater, Courfeyrac’s freckled shoulder, Marius’s freckled nose; a mounted lock of blond hair—but they’re all framed in such a gaudy manner, chipped gold paint giving away the false gilt of them, that even they are not quite what Courfeyrac might call curated, especially because the wall behind them is covered in strips of vintage floral wallpaper.

this was the first time since i was like a child that i cared about describing a room. i stripped all the descriptiveness out of my writing and focused on character interactions, but thanks to donna tartt, i brought it back.

um - on the same note, ernest hemingway. i know this is cliche as all hell, but i loved the sun also rises so much, and i loved “hills like white elephants” so much because both of them communicated so much and so beautifully without very many words. i love the way he gets so much about characters across via dialogue and small actions. that’s what i aspire to do—not have to tell you what characters are like or how they feel about each other, just show it through their dialogue and the way they act. so yeah, i took concise-ness & a focus on dialogue/character over description from him all the way back in high school.

i was going to list a political theorist for the third one but since you haven’t read my academic work it’s not like you know that my academic writing sounds a lot like some mill/locke hybrid with a dash of perez hilton, so instead i’ll say jhumpa lahiri. the namesake is one of my favorite books, and it was the first time i really read something that was about non-western culture and liked it. i think she showed me that reading and writing about brown people (like myself) doesn’t have to be a chore - i’d read so many boring poor-immigrant-with-a-rich-culture-but-shitty-life tales that i thought every book about immigrants was like that - and i think after i read her, i stopped defaulting to white characters in the things i wrote. thus brown grantaire, black & brown marauders, brown neil josten, etc.

for work, mornings. for fic-writing, saturday afternoons when i’m having a glass of wine/cup of tea and debating going out.

28. worst review you ever got

one time someone told me they read the entirety of selling out msg/world tours (around 100k words) and were upset that i showed grantaire snorting so much cocaine and wrote their relationship as unhealthy. i still think about it and laugh because it was so ridiculous. we’re talking about a guy—a drunk—who god-worships a guy who is really pretty rude to him in the canon. anyway every bad review i’ve ever gotten has been something along the lines of “you don’t write relationship X as healthy” and i’m like no shit it’s not a healthy relationship. or “you write characters X Y Z as doing drugs and i don’t think they would do drugs” and i’m like “babe i have warnings about it. just don’t read.” 

i’m pretty lucky that the vast vast vast majority of feedback i get is positive. i’d be open to constructive criticism i guess but i’m not writing for publication i’m just writing for fun so i don’t really need yall to come in my inbox like “why do you write character B the way you write them when i conceive of them in a different way i hate you but i read everything you write” (just the first half of that question is totally fine though)

i kinda wish i’d called fear in a handful of dust something else. my conception of that story was kinda - people are scared of andrew bc he’s a werewolf but the fear is bs cause he won’t actually do anything werewolf-y to them. it’s the title i thought about the least of all my tfc stuff i think but what else would i have called it? boys becoming men (men becoming wolves)?

i like multi-chaps bc i can get feedback more frequently, but one-shots take the pressure off, so sometimes i prefer them (especially if i feel like i might not finish something)

if i could flesh claw marks out a bit, i’d want to see it as a tv series. i love dystopia shit idk. 

also i love sometimes life’s okay like if someone made a rom com about two queer sports dudes with lots of issues who were full adults i would watch the shit out of it.

i plan linearly and try to write that way, but if i feel like writing future stuff i do! usually i write all the super dialogue-y scenes first bc those are my favorite and go back to insert the stuff that’s less interesting to me - action, mostly hahaha. but yeah i do have pretty linear outlines that i try to follow which helps a lot when stuff is densely plotted. it lets me know what happens in each chapter too which is good bc i forget a lot
