not to be an old man averse to change but I really don't like what they did with the notification panel, I feel like it looked so much better when it was just a darker grey color for mutuals instead of... every notification being the same shade but mutuals have this ugly little box next to their name that says MUTUALS as if I didn't already know that.

like idk its just…worse to look at? before with the different shades it was more subtle and elegant web design, but also easier to identify my mutuals when I was scrolling through my activity feed quickly. are they concerned new users from other websites won't know who their mutuals are? the people they follow on purpose and likely interact with most often? why does tumblr always make pointless (worse) aesthetic changes instead of actually fixing any of the numerous problems with this broken ass website. do they think nobody will notice. I've been so annoyed the past week with how buggy this entire site has been and when they finally update it it's just to make a trivial change that solves nothing and only makes me more annoyed

look, every day i see the privacy-obsessed ppl on tumblr using firefox. and every day i see my privacy-obsessed coworkers using brave.

so uh i finally did a bit more in-depth digging.

basically, yeah, firefox has its own engine instead of using chromium like brave and most of the web does. so if that’s your only deciding factor of course use firefox. and like, that is an important factor to me - i don’t want chrome/chromium to become the only option. 

but for most people there’s other factors. if you’re switching from chrome, brave won’t be as big as a change, visually/feature-wise, because it is chromium-based. again, if you don’t mind change, just go for firefox! if you need to ease into different browser and want more security (maybe not the most, but more than say fucking chrome) brave is a decent choice.

and brave is easier in other ways too. look, firefox and brave both block a ton of trackers/cookie shit automatically. and now firefox has that total cookies thing which is great. but if you want advertisements blocked by default? brave has got you. i know, i know - installing adblock extensions isn’t hard. but personally i hate having to sort through which ones are ~effective~ and ~safe~, okay. So yeah, i’m sorry, but that is a huge draw of brave for me, despite the chromium thing. and i think, personally, if you have less tech-savvy family and friends you want protected and you KNOW they’re not going to bother digging through browser settings, I think brave is better than leaving them with whatever the default is installed on their machine. 

idk. brave has some cool in theory but not great in practice things. like, because they block advertisements by default, they have this optional to enable thing where you get tokens for allowing occasional ads. these tokens are worth money you can give to sites/creators you support. great in theory - websites cost money, after all, that’s why there’s advertising in the first place. but the tokens can also be converted to cryptocurrency (maybe are by default?? idfk i’ve never enabled it) and that’s obviously not great for anyone/anything. so i like their alternative model of how to let websites make money without bombarding you with constant ads. i just hate their actual implementation of it. 

and lastly, there’s this weird speed thing. brave uses up more RAM - supposedly because it has that default advertisement blocking. (personally i’m inclined to believe anything chromium just does that on purpose to fuck with me). but because brave is blocking all advertisements - or maybe partially due to more RAM, idk - the pages do load faster. i’ve only really been using firefox on my work computer and, like, it’s not a huge difference. but it is noticeable. in this case, i think it’s worth it for not supporting chromium on at least one computer i use. but your mileage may vary. 

and there’s more differences i haven’t mentioned, because i don’t care or maybe didn’t realize their importance. this is just, like, my personal reasons for why i’m currently using both.

maybe someday i’ll get firefox setup right on my personal computer (or i get a new one and set it up on the new one, like what has happened with work). 

but in the meantime...i’ll probably keep using brave on my personal computer, since it’s already setup. i do like the interface more. i like that the new tab pages tells me the amount of time i’ve saved by letting them block advertisements by default is an entire day of my life. and that i’ve saved 21 gb of bandwidth. and blocked over 1.73 million trackers. supposedly i can get this info in a firefox privacy report too, i just haven’t tried yet.

i just...yeah, firefox is probably the better bet, in terms of security and yknow, not being fucking chromium. but if your anxiety is spiking because everyone keeps telling you firefox is the only safe bet but you don’t have the spoons to fuck around with the settings (or, like, research the extensions, bc seriously i’m not just gonna trust an internet stranger’s list of safe extensions), just download brave and know you’re better off than before, okay?

if you have the energy go for firefox. and someday, when i have the energy and/or see my coworkers ditching brave, i’ll join you.

1. why did you choose your url?

My main — I was into The Who, and surprisingly Underture wasn’t taken like Quadrophenia. Never got around changing it, really.

For this blog, I’ve switched thru so many urls of my fixations at the moment lol and then I settled on twitoftheyear for a long while (which is from a Monty Python skit Upper Class Twit of the Year). And then Psych & Carlton Lassiter happened and I obviously I wanted to use carltonlassiter but it was taken, so I settled on this url.

2. any side-blogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.

My other sideblog is @cueone because cueonego (which is my ao3 username) was taken. it’s all confusing. There’s just way too many blogs and urls. Why. There used to be a system where I post mostly film & tv on my main, aesthetic posts dumb memes on that blog and personal posts on this blog, but idk what I’m doing anymore. I kinda regret making separate blogs for every little thing, because it’s just way too scattered now.

3. how long have you been on tumblr?

On tumblr since late 2000s I’m guessing; I don’t really remember since I don’t go on my first account anymore. on this account since 2011?2012? Tumblr is Hotel California but where else would I engage in critical media analysis of shows that are not meant for it

Let’s Talk About Trackers...

Because of the major talk about them yesterday and how an anon tried to throw me under the bus, I want to make an informative post about the specific tracker I use and certain others do too (assuming they still use these). This will also go under a keep reading so you don’t have to scroll in case you read it and then don’t wanna scroll past it a second time.

I personally use a site called statcounter. What is stat counter? Well, let me explain with an excerpt from Wikipedia!

“StatCounter is a web traffic analysis website started in 1999. Access to basic services is free and advanced services can cost between US$5 and US$119 a month. StatCounter is based in Dublin, Ireland. The statistics from StatCounter are used to compute web usage share for example. As of May 2019, StatCounter is used on 0.9% of all websites. StatCounter statistics are directly derived from hits—as opposed to unique visitors—from 3 million sites, which use StatCounter, resulting in total hits of more than 15 billion per month. No artificial weightings are used to correct for sampling bias, thus the numbers in the statistics can not be considered to be representative samples.”

Statcounter I find has some cool features too if you do run a business site, which I aim to do in the future, here’s some of the cool analytics stuff they have if you’re a business marketer:

This tool here provides where the majority of your people come from, so it will help businesses to have features such as this, so StatCounter is cool to use for business and marketing.

But that’s not why we’re here, are we?

StatCounter says they provide you with IPs in hopes of blocking/banning them from your site and/or stopping fraud on your website.

Sure, that’s useful as I personally use that to block people’s IPs if they send me hate anons. But here is how it’s an issue... This specific tab, which I know M/C uses quite often from my former friendship with her: Visitor Activity

Now, let’s go there and break it down. I will be censoring sensitive information like people’s locations and IP addresses to protect them.

I want to also address the “xxx is now using 100% of its log space” too.

It may be hard to read, but it says the following 

“Your Project Bara Shikki is now using 100% of its log space. This means that your website traffic data for detailed stats older than 7 months* will be overwritten to make room for new data. You can upgrade for $9/month to increase your log to 10+ years*. If you don't mind losing this old data for detailed stats, then no action is required on your part. Summary Stats are included with all plans and are unlimited.

* Estimated based on your current traffic”

For my other blog @ / dialoving-lemons, it deletes this info in 7 days due to the high demand traffic (it is a LOT more popular than any of my other blogs despite me being on hiatus there).

So while that is good, this information stays for a while. If someone is paying for this service, they can keep this info for a long time.

Now onto the part we are mainly addressing, addresses and IPs. I will use my own visits for the example (the white censor). And yes, you can appear on your own tracker as it picks anyone up who visits the URL.

I color coded this so we can do a breakdown. 

Yellow is my city. Green is the state (will be providence if you are in another country). Then you see “United States” as the country it says I’m from. Your country’s flag also appears before your location.

^^^This here is already pretty accurate and sensitive information, and we haven’t even gotten to the second line yet.

For the second line, we have these: Purple is your internet provider. White, that’s your IP. See that tag next to it? You can click on that and make notes in it for when that person returns to your url. You can even sign up for notifications to get emails or alerts on your phone (if you have the statcounter app). How do I know this? This is how:

Idk about you guys, but that’d make me uncomfortable to know someone could just get a ping saying I’m visiting their page. Again, I don’t know what features M/C uses, so I can’t say if she has this or not.

So not only can you find someone’s location, internet provider, and IP (which I think is enough for someone who hack or screw you over somehow, idk. I’d want to look that info up) but you can also stalk when they’re on your blog. This is a big YIKES.

Now back to the breakdown of the image from earlier...

You can learn what device they used, their browser, get a timestamp, and also how long they were on your page. I personally don’t care sharing this info, many of us use the most updated browser of our choice and most of us are on windows 10 for computer users.

So... yeah. While I use statcounter myself to block haters and redirect their IPs so they can’t get on my page anymore, I feel this site does give out too much information. On top of that, the one we all know who uses this software also has some software that checks who unfollows her. She uses these to get dirt on people and to expose them, it is not for her safety.

Now some tips on how to be safe if you don’t want to be tracked thanks to me testing things out:

Use the tumblr app.

The tumblr app uses coding for mobile usage. It does not rely on urls, but another form of code. StatCounter cannot log this code, so you will not appear on the visitor activity tab.

View blogs in side view

This is side view for those that don’t know. Side view acts a lot like the app in terms of the coding. So viewing like this is safe for you to not appear on trackers.

StatCounter relies on you typing in and clicking on urls on someone’s tumblr page (if installed on a tumblr).

As long as you are on a way that doesn’t rely on url systems, you are safe from appearing in someone’s tracker.

And a final note, if you are going to use one like I do, for blocking haters’ IPs, then I highly recommend putting a disclaimer in your description. I immediately did that when I installed mine so people knew they’d get rerouted if they started crap with me. I personally feel that keeping it secret that you have a tracker is violating someone’s consent as you are gathering info without their permission. By saying you have one, them being able to use ways where they won’t be tracked is very useful and helps them feel at ease knowing they can decide if they’re fine popping up on your tracker or not. Here is an example disclaimer you can put if you do put one in. Feel free to copy and paste too!

"Disclaimer: I use a tracker that allows me to see visitors’ IPs so I can block them if they cause problems for me, proceed at your own risk"

I’m like, really missing the internet of olde lately (more than usual). Weird thing is I rarely participated in it, just read a lot. Communities for whatever show I was into that year on Livejournal. Endless Xanga surveys and collecting icons. Forums for literally any topic. Crappy Harry Potter fanfiction on the Warner Bros forums on out to Fanfiction.net and other sites. Fansites in general!! Taking personality quizzes and learning to build my own in HTML. Laughing at (and feeling sew edgy about being on) mid-00s YTMND and SomethingAwful and Newgrounds. Open Diary, the OG blog site (actually the only one I ever had a blog on before tumblr - as I said, I just read a lot rather than participated, which I regret now). Finding a thousand self-made sites or forum posts by people who were just really into a subject when you searched something rather than just articles from big media outlets and official sites. Being able to obsess over whatever celebrity online because they weren’t actually online to see it, mandated by their publicist to maintain social media profiles (and the rare ones who actually did interact with fans online were a novelty). Customizing your signature in a message board. Scrolling through links in webrings and then bored.com and then StumbleUpon. I never had MySpace but I would read what kids from my school were up to on there, judge whatever song was on their profile that week. Even early Facebook with all the buttons and drawing pads and top friends things you could put on your wall.

Everything is so corporate and sanitized now (or if it’s not sanitized, it’s the worst of humanity tearing the real world apart). I don’t even know where you go to meet fans of things with that much passion and specificity anymore. Like, even the fact that on here in the early part of this decade there was a group of 10-20 of us who loved Hey Rosetta! enough to be friends over it and dissect everything they did feels impossible now. I feel like these days you can’t find that for small bands/movies/books/shows/whatever (that and the Canadian media that built up bands like HR! has largely fallen apart since then, but that’s another rant). Modern tumblr, Reddit and Instagram (I refuse to touch twitter with a ten foot pole anymore) just ain’t the same as obsessive forums and fansites and LJ communities were. Some things persist - like, those little story templates on Instagram I suppose are similar to what blog surveys used to be - but it’s still not the same. I even miss the way everything used to look, because it was personalized for each person and that helped me and so many others learn to do stuff like Photoshop and basic coding. Then facebook’s uniform white profile kind of ruined all that.

The internet just isn’t fun for me anymore. And I’ve been glued to it for so long that I don’t know what to replace it with. That was a sweet time we got to live through with all that crazy creativity and nerdiness in the early web and it sucks being so far out from that now. And genuine enjoyment of things seems to be met by “lol cringe” a lot of the time. Idk why I’m feeling this so acutely all of a sudden. Now the internet is just everyone’s replacement for TV and phone calls and newspapers and shopping malls and office file cabinets all designed to make some really horrible companies and people money, rather than its own weird hobby for weird people like it once was.

JJ’s how to gif using timeline animation instead of frames

So here it is. This is just the basics, It covers the set up and the steps to do it. I will perhaps do a part 2 in the future that covers how to use text and things like that. But if you’re interested in making gifs with timeline, master this stuff first:

OKAY I’ve gotten lots of asks about doing this so today we’re talking about how to make gifs using timeline animation and screen recording. I know lots of people use frame animation. I used to always make my gifs that way. This is just a way that I found worked better for me and was a lot faster and made gifs come out cleaner (making frame caps got real slow on my computer for some strange reason). ANYWAY so what you need for this, most importantly, is quicktime player. At least for the screen recording process. But if you are making gifs of short videos like youtube or something, you don’t necessarily have to record them with quick time as long as you download them. And then you need a video that’s playing somewhere, be it on a site or on a video player (i’m using VLC player in this tutorial). 

First, I open the video I want to gif in VLC player. For this tutorial, it’s an episode of Shadowhunters in 1080p. I get the video to just a few seconds before the scene I want to gif (keep in mind you can do the whole scene, you’re going to cut it up later). Pause the video. 

Then you right click on quicktime player (I keep it open in my doc to make things easier. I’m not sure of the mechanics of doing this part if you aren’t on a mac but I imagine you just need to have quicktime already open). So I right click and hit “new screen recording”

which will then give me a screen like this:

You’re going to hit that red dot. Don’t worry it doesn’t start recording right away. When you hit the red dot, this comes up:

I prefer to click and drag to select the area of the video to save me from having to trip/crop it later. But you can also just click anywhere to record full screen. 

With the click and drag, I box the entirety of the video and nothing else like this:

Then I hit that “start recording” button in the middle. Make sure you click back to your video after you do this and actually hit play. And then just wait and let it record. Once you have everything you want, right click on Quicktime again and select “stop screen recording.”

once you do that you’ll get a screen like this that opens the video you just created over the video you’re playing. 

Now while still in Quick time I go up to the top menu bar and hit “edit” and then “Trim” so i can cut this file down. You want to not open HUGE files in photoshop and also want to avoid saving big files to your computer so being able to take some out is nice. 

When I open it in trim, I just take off the stuff at the beginning where you could see me clicking around and the stuff at the end where you can see me stopping the recording. 

Then I hit trim. And once that’s done I got to “file” and then “save” and save my clip. 

This probably feels like a WHOLE lot of steps. I swear it isn’t. It’ll begin to feel like one fluid thing once you’ve done it a few times. 

Now onto the photoshop part. You’re going to open that entire clip you just made in photoshop. I usually just go find it in my files, and drag it over to photoshop to open it. And you will have a screen that looks like this:

If you don’t have that timeline window there, just go up to “window” and select “timeline”

Now this is the most important step. Do NOT forget it. (Trust me I forget it at least once a day). You need to slow this clip down. Otherwise it’s going to move at a really fast speed in gifs. Usually anything between 40-50% works fine but feel free to adjust it depending on what you want. To slow it down, you’re going to hit that little triange in the top right corner of the video timeline:

This window will pop up right above it. Adjust where it says “100%” to say the percentage you want. For this, I’m going to use 50. Which is usually what I always use. 

When you do that, it is going to actually keep the video length the same, but slow the frames down, which means you’re going to lose half your video. Have no fear it isn’t gone for good. Just zoom out on the timeline using this glider:

Then click on the video right at the end and drag it out to the right:

This should double your clip length and give you all your content back (NOW AT 50% FRAME RATE!)

NOW is the part where you crop/resize your gif. MAKE SURE you do that AFTER you adjust the frame rate. Otherwise, if photoshop converts your content into a smart object (which it WILL ask to do when you resize) you will bypass the option to adjust the frame rate percentage. 

So anyway now we crop based on what we’re going to gif. I’m just going to make a small gif of the three kids hanging out for this gif set. so I’m going to crop for that. But you can use the little slider at the bottom to move through the video if there’s something else you’re looking to crop to fit or whateverrrr. 

That red line there is the thing I”m talking about. See how moving it changed what was on screen? Magic. 

ANYWAY back to the kids:

I crop to what I want first. Then go up to image, resize and resize it to the 268 dimension. 

All I do is make sure the height is something larger than 150 because for this gif I want it to be 268x150. I can crop those extra 20 pixels out after. I hit okay to save it. 

This is where the window pops up that asks if you want to convert it to a smart object. Tell it that’s okay by hitting “convert” and it’ll do its magic thing and convert your wHOLE video clip to a smart object. 

That step always makes it all tiny like this:

Just hold down command and hit the “+” a few times to zoom it back to normal size. 

You don’t really need this step but here’s where I hit image again, and then canvas size to clip the height down to 150px

So now you’ve basically got a gif sized version of an ENTIRE scene. YAY. Or not yay. Idk what you want. Here’s the part where we gif it. FIRST lets add a coloring. You can use your own coloring or a psd or whatever you’re going to do. I’m just going to pop a basic coloring on this and get back to you when I’m done. BUT if you want a coloring tutorial I have one of those here

Okay coloring is added and now we’re back. Have I mentioned that the coolest part of giffing from a timeline instead of frames is that you can put the coloring in place once and it’s on the WHOLE scene? yeah it’s great. The same applies for sharpening. So we’re going to sharpen this mother. I do that by making sure the video is highlighted blue over there in the layers section, then hit “filter” “sharpen” and then “smart sharpen”

These are my smart sharpen settings if you want them:

So now you have an entire scene, colored and sharpened and you’re ready to make it into gifs. 

You do that by adjusting those little gray markers on top of the timeline. I’m going to move those gray things to the area i want to gif to make it easier

then use that same little slider as before to zoom back in so i can most accurately get the area i want:

That little red line is your friend. Use it to slide around and see what your gif is and align those little gray things with it when you have it where you want:

Unfortunately, I don’t have a secret to knowing how long or short it should be. You gotta sort of eyeball it and get used to it. You’ll notice when you go to save the gif, if it’s too big, you gotta go back in and make it shorter. So I’m just taking a guess with this gif length.  But once I have that area selected. I’m going to hit “file” “export” “save for web"

That will save ONLY the area I’ve selected and export it as a gif. 

That opens this window. As you can see, my gif is only 715.7k and only 50 frames. So instead of saving it, I’m actually going to cancel and close this window and go back to the timeline and adjust those gray things to make it longer:

I basically just doubled the length since we know that 715.7k doubled is still nowhere near the tumblr gif size limit of 3GB. 

Then I hit “file” “export” “save for web” again and get this window again:

110 frames is probably way better than 50. Based on the size i can afford to make it even bigger but I’m not going to. Now you have to adjust those settings at the bottom so that it is set to start at the first frame instead of the last frame, and set to loop forever instead of once.

These are my save settings. You’re welcome to use those or whatever your own are:

Then you just hit save and BOOM:

A clean gif with no choppiness and all of the frames in tact. THEN you can go back to your exact same open file and move those gray things around and gif another portion of the scene without changing anything:

“But JJ, now they’re off center because you cropped it to fit the first shot.”

I know. All you have to do is hit the crop tool and then click anywhere on your gif. It’ll give you this:

Now just slide the window to adjust it how you’d like

And then hit enter. Boom. ONE RULE do NOT resize that window. If you start pushing and pulling you’re going to fuck up the gif size and mess up your sharpening. Just slide it around to different locations. Don’t start adjusting the shape/size. If you need to make a bigger gif or smaller gif, reopen your file in a new window and size it that way from the get go or your sharpening will get all whacky. 

Then just save your gif again and:

now you’ve got two gifs from the same scene, same coloring, same sharpening and you can just keep on going, sliding those gray guys around and saving like a saving machine. That’s all kids. Hope this worked and helped you a little. It feels like it has a lot of steps but it’s actually quite smooth once you’re used to it. Let me know if you have questions!

recollections of a fandom old(ish)

I've seen various fandom history posts popping up on my dash recently, and that made me think of how I was on tumblr since before fandom came here (I opened this blog in November 2008). I was also quite active on livejournal; the great strikethrough crisis happened in 2007, but people were still looking at livejournal substitutes like dreamwidth, insanejournal, greatestjournal etc. (iirc LJ’s code is/was open source so it was easy to legally clone it). Myself, I stuck to livejournal for fandom activity as much as I could. 

Fannish content began to appear here and there on tumblr as well but I thought this wasn’t the right platform for it; early tumblr was pushed as an image heavy microblogging site, didn’t have a tagging system nor any filter whatsoever (the latter hasn’t changed much), so I was skeptical about the kind of fandom culture that consolidated on livejournal being able to take seed here. 

We were, after all, used to pretty tidy comment threads under posts, to moderated communities on specific subjects (fandoms, characters, ships, kinks, rpgs and of course fanfiction and fanart), and most crucially to the possibility of filtering whom we wanted to show our content to based on a list system, kind of like what facebook allows you to do with their privacy levels now. This was great for protecting personal posts from passer bys, and also for filtering out stuff like nsfw content. Plus it was pretty good for posting fic; you could hide thousands of words under a “read more” without clogging anyone’s friends page and actually have conversations in the comment thread underneath. Tumblr’s freeform, “let it all hang out” design - remember that read more cuts, much like tagging, haven’t always been a feature around here - seemed to offer such a wildly different user experience that I couldn’t imagine fandom relocating there of all places. Which, on a side note, is amusing in retrospect because I found out that fans coming from the mailing list culture also felt uncomfortable about the lack of privacy on livejournal.

Well, I guess I didn’t take the generational turnover into account, as newer fans came in and made their home on tumblr. Add this to the fact that lj kept having issues post strikethrough (remember the Russian spambots?) and by 2011 we were all here, more or less. To be honest, it felt kind of gradual to me and I didn’t feel particularly regretful when I went back to my livejournal and made a post saying that it was the end for that blog. But, even though I wasn’t married to the platform (and I surely wouldn’t go back now, wtf?), there are sides to that user experience that I miss. Like how it was much harder to accidentally stumble into antis since the content wasn’t aggregated through public tags but it was more like fans of a certain subject would simply share their content in themed communities. Or how the privacy filters made it REALLY hard to see things you didn’t want to see. 

Idk, I wonder how many of the issues about what gets posted on tumblr, the Discourse, the mob mentality etc., would actually be mitigated by better UX design. Livejournal, for all its flaws and its being a rudimentary relic from the late web 1.0 gave its users more tools to create safe spaces - even just to get excited over a ship or character in peace. And that’s something this blue hellsite could use, but lol we only barely got hashtag blacklisting on mobile and most of us use a third party extension like New XKit to make the desktop version tolerable, so I’m not holding my breath. Western social media has no respect for Japanese online artists - and it’s killing online art

The visual arts have evolved to suit the most popular medium of each era. In nowadays’ case, the internet is the go-to method of sharing the fruits of one’s labour). However, as stated in that tweet thread of mine you can see if you scroll down a bit (assuming you’re viewing this post on chariot313.tumblr.com) different cultures have different attitudes towards how their customers react to their products. This include you know what fuck the formalities, I’ll just say it: The exclusively western concept of someone seeing something they like online and hitting the share button to stimulate the “Haha, upvotes go ‘brrr’!” dopamine in their smooth-ass lizard brain will be the death of online Japanese artists. Or rather, it has been already, and you would know that if you’ve ever seen an artist’s Twitter bio be in mostly Japanese save for one sentence in English; “Reprint is prohibited.”.

Introduction

Social media as a whole is based around sharing (posting, uploading, submitting, tweeting, blogging, streaming etc.) and other’s reactions to what one has shared (views, likes, subscribers, favorites, followers, upvotes, retweets, reblogs, crossposts, etc.).

However, miscommunication and culture shock due to language barriers and cultural differences is one of the many factors that can negatively affect one’s experience on social media. For example, the Japanese artist community, active on sites such as Twitter, Pixiv, NicoNico Seiga, FC2 blogs, etc.. Twitter is mostly inhabited by English-speaking users. Here in the west, our main motive for sharing something on social media (such as art) is for fame and recognition. However, over in the East, most online artists only upload their works to the internet for personal use. I’m not saying one cultural attitude towards sharing art is better than one another, but when these two worldviews collide, the culture shock can negatively affect the careers of artists who are unaware of the other culture’s differing views on sharing art.

So, I’ve listed numerous social media platforms below and I’m going to elaborate on how each of them contributes to the alienation and discouragement of Japanese artists.

DO NOT WITCH-HUNT OR HARASS THE CULPRITS I’VE LISTED AS EXAMPLES; THEY ONLY SERVE TO BACK UP MY ARGUMENT

Twitter

Go into the twitter search bar and type in the name of an anime character (usually female). What do you find? Most likely an account named after said character that does nothing but post unsourced fan art of said character with cheesy “in-character” captions on them.

Aside from that, Twitter isn’t that bad in this regard, as a lot of the art that gets stolen is originally uploaded to Twitter anyway. But I’m just getting started. 

Wattpad

Ah yes, Wattpad. One of the “trinity” of fan fiction communities (the others being fanfiction.net and AO³), featuring many different stories with varying degrees of readability. The problem is the option to add a picture to adorn your fanfiction, at which point most of the authors google “<fanfic subject> fan art” and use something from there without considering the repercussions. This causes Wattpad to be one of the top results when reverse image searching to find the source of some fan art, aside from another site I’ll mention later on...

Reddit

There’s a subreddit I often browse called r/ChurchOfJirou, a community for sharing anything relating to the character Kyouka from My Hero Academia (I mean come on, she’s like the cutest thing ever). A lot of the posts on that sub are sharing fan art of the aforementioned character. One of the rules in the sidebar is “always include the source in the title or the comments”. And most of the submissions make good on that rule. However, a lot of the posts are from Japanese artists on Twitter or Pixiv, and following the source link leads you to find the artist’s bio, which usually has something along the lines of “don’t repost my work”. And what’s more, the biggest offenders (of submitting art to the sub without OP’s permission) were the moderators of the subreddit. You know, the ones who are supposed to be enforcing the rules? I even got so fed up that I called it out, to which one of the mods replied,

“It doesn’t really make a difference, does it?”

Luckily, not all subreddits are like this. For example, other MHA-related subs like r/BokuNoShipAcademia or r/ChurchOfMinaAshido have moderators that are more considerate of artists’ wishes. Overall, Reddit is usually a hit-or-miss when it comes to this kind of thing. At best, you’ve got subs like the two I just mentioned which make sure to respect artists, and at worst you’ve got people trying (and failing) to edit out watermarks. Also, not to self-promote, but this tweet of mine represents this situation pretty well:

Imgur isn’t that bad compared to the rest of these, but it’s a common one that people link to when asked for the source of whatever they’ve shared on Twitter or Reddit or whatever.

Amino Apps

Amino Apps is a strange case. I don’t know much about it since I’ve never used it, but from what I do know it seems similar to Reddit in that there are numerous communities for different niches. That said, judging from the way it clogs up Google image search results, I doubt OC art is posted there often.

YouTube

Now, you may be thinking, “How does a video site rip off others’ art?”. The answer is uploads of soundtracks. Look for any OST from a video game or anime on YouTube and the picture used for the video will likely be some fan art by a Japanese Pixiv artist, usually one that forbids reposts of their work. Not only that, but if the uploader did bother to add the source in the description, it’s usually not even a link to the actual source, more likely a link to Zerochan or Pinterest or something. Now take into account that some of these videos get millions of views. Imagine working hard on something, and some numbnuts takes it, slaps some music onto it, uploads it to YouTube, and gets millions of views while you get next to nothing in comparison.

Pinterest

Alright, this is the big one. When Pinterest isn’t giving recipes or wardrobe ideas to suburban white moms, it’s clogging up Google reverse image search, punishing anyone who just wanted to find the source of some cute fan art. I feel like this meme by ZebitasMartinexSi on Facebook sums it up:

For example, this piece of Legend of Zelda art by Twitter artist @_nomeri_ (I’ll just link to it, since it would be hypocritical of me to embed the image even though @_nomeri_’s bio warns people not to repost their art). Good art, right? Well, if you right-click and hit “Search Google for image”...

...yeah. Pinterest is a plague. It thrives on theft. Even worse is when someone will post fan art on Twitter/Tumblr/Reddit/etc. and have the nerve to say “IDK the source I found it on Pinterest ^_^”. Or worse yet, they link to Pinterest saying it’s the source.

Instagram

While many other sites rag on Instagram for its reposting of memes, it’s no better when it comes to reposting fan art, especially from Pixiv. I’ve seen lots of stolen pieces with fan fictions written in the description. Personally, if I were an artist, I’d rethink my career choice if I saw my art reposted on Instagram with a half-assed fanfic under it, so I don’t blame Japanese artists who close their Pixiv accounts after seeing that. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to prevent it from happening in the first place.

DeviantArt

DeviantArt is more “renowned” across the web for its niche circles of bizarre fetish art, but in its defence, there are some legitimately good pieces on there. If you do find a good one though, try checking to see if all of the uploader’s pieces have a similar overall art style, because if not, that’s a sure sign of someone passing off some Pixiv user’s art as their own, which is unfortunately fairly common on DeviantArt.

9Gag

Not a whole lot to say about 9Gag. I mean, it does contribute to reposting of art, but nothing really separates it from the others on this list, aside from its watermarks. At least the watermark gives away the fact that something was reposted.

Know Your Meme

You know that Zelda pic by @_nomeri_ I was talking about earlier? Well, to add insult to injury, it became an object-labelling meme.

Imagine putting hours into something and politely asking others not to repost it, only to find that some nincompoops on r/DankMemes made it into an object-labelling meme.

But this isn’t KYM’s fault, per se. Know Your Meme only documents memes; they do not create them. However, as someone who regularly browses the Know Your Meme image galleries, I can say that the image gallery has essentially become Know Your Fan Art (unlawfully reposted fan art, that is).

Redbubble

There’s an NSFW artist I follow on Twitter by the name of Nico-Mo. A while ago, his Pixiv account was suspended, and there were numerous pictures on there that he had not uploaded to his Twitter or DeviantArt, so I found a mirror of one of those pieces on Gelbooru and reverse-image searched in hopes of finding it on his Twitter. No such luck. What came up instead was a .png of the piece made into a sticker being sold on Redbubble. In fact, that’s one of the major reasons why artists disapprove of their art being reposted, as it may find its way onto a sticker or a T-shirt being sold as merch without the original artist giving consent nor the artist receiving so much as a single nickel.

Facebook

Surprisingly, I think Facebook is one of the least offending sites on this list. Still worth mentioning, though.

Funnyjunk

Like Imgur, Funnyjunk isn’t that bad compared to some of the rest of these, but this exchange in the comments of a repost of an MHA artist that deleted their account (not hard to see why considering people straight-up ignored the big-ass watermark at the bottom) is proof enough of western social media’s flippant attitude towards ruining online artists’ careers.

Aggregator imageboards such as Yande.re, Konachan, Danbooru, Gelbooru, Rule34, SankakuComplex, Zerochan, etc.

I don’t think I need to explain these. But like Imgur, these are what most people link to when asked for source instead of bothering to find the original post.

We Heart It

I don’t know much about “We Heart It”, but it seems to be a “Pinterest Lite” considering it clogs up image search almost as much as Pinterest does.

iFunny

Basically the same as 9Gag, in the sense that its watermarks are a dead giveaway.

4chan

I’m not sure if 4chan really “counts” among these, as it’s a chat board where nearly everything is impermanent anyway. However, I was once on an NSFW subreddit where one submitter used a 4chan thread to get Patreon-exclusive material from an artist to upload to the sub (even though one of the rules of the sub was “no paywall content”), so that alone earns 4chan its spot on this list.

Tumblr

Yes, not even Tumblr is innocent. Although I’m sure you knew that. Similar to what I said about Twitter, look up any blog named after a fictional character and it’ll likely be chock-full of unsourced fan art.

“Why is this even important?”

Because if an artist sees that their work is being reposted, depending on the artist, they may delete the original post when they wouldn’t have to if people had just respected their wishes. Now, if an artist wants their works gone from the internet for other personal reasons, that’s up to them and we should respect them for it. But artists taking down their works due to mass reposting is 100% preventable, which is why it’s sad. If you don’t respect an artist, they won’t create art. Simple as that.

“Why do you care so much?”

Eh, I’m just weird like that. It just ticks me off when anything online, whether it be art, or a video, or whatever, is lost. In my opinion, nothing hurts more than clicking a Pixiv link on an imageboard and being greeted with “The work was deleted or the ID does not exist.”.

“But lots of western artists forbid reposting of their art too!”

Indeed, that is correct. But while many artists of every nationality and culture frown upon reproduction of their work, it seems only western social media is responsible for reposting art in the first place. I mean, why else do you think Japanese artists are saying “Reprint is prohibited” in English when the rest of their bio is in Japanese? Because English-speakers are the ones reposting.

“But exposure can help an artist!”

Yeah, that’s true...

...but “exposure” doesn’t mean much if those “exposed” to one’s work don’t know or care who it came from.

Gif tutorial (Avisynth, Photoshop and Topaz)

okay so I’ve gotten a lot of questions asking me how I get my gifs so nice and smooth and HD and normally I don’t really go into depth because it’s kind of a combination of stuff I’ve learnt over time. My old gif tutorial only outlines using photoshop and is like over a year old so here’s an updated version.

Everything below the cut

So I’m going to break this tutorial down into 3 key parts, avisynth, photoshop and topaz. So you can pick which section that applies for you and each tutorial is basically independent.

Avisynth

disclaimer: not recommended to start out using avisynth, learn and familiarise using photoshop to make gifs first.

some background - why I use avisynth is because it’s a way to downscale the video without/next to no loss at all, so the quality is retained. Definitely check out brandinator’s tutorial and explanations here as he’s basically the innovator for avisynth gifs. He’s also super friendly so if you have any issues definitely hit him up. His tutorial basically explains everything and I guess I’ll just outline what it’s telling you to do.

Drag your video file onto normalwebmrange.bat and a command prompt will pop up

if your file does not work with normalwebmrange, then useless lossless intead

Type in your start time and hit enter, do the same for the end time (must be in hh:mm:ss format, i.e. 00:00:03 for it to start at 3 seconds)

Then after all the frames are done processing resizer.html will automatically open up in your browser

From here you figure out the sizing of your video (please refer to brandinator’s video here because it explain it really well)

For the following steps just refer to the rest of the video because its visually easier to learn off

When you copy your code across, dont include the crop line of code just in case you want to move things around in photoshop later

What do all the options in the resizer.html mean?

GIF size - Here you just plug in the value that you intend for your gif. Refer here for the tumblr post width guides. I personally use:

540 x [anything] for single gifs

268 x 350 for double gifs

177/178 x 250 for triple gifs

Opacity - This slider is just so you can see which part of the video will be shown in your given dimensions and is really useful as a preview to see if everything you want in your gif is visible for that dimension so you can go back and tweak your size if necessary

Resizing - In the bottom right hand corner of the video itself you can click and drag to resize the video so that you can find the desired size/zoom for your given dimensions

Pre-processor - Okay this is the important one and where all the smooth and HD quality comes from. In the first box you are given these options 

Use for standard video formats (mp4, avi, mkv etc)

None (choose none for every video that is not a .ts file)

IVTC (tbh idk what this does, but you don’t need it)

1 in 5 Dupe (some videos have a duplicate frame for every 5th frame and this fixes it, kind of rare to use)

Only use for .ts files Basically the 30 and 60 is talking about 30fps or 60fps, recommend that you choose 30fps for single gifs because you’re going to find it hard to fit anything of substance under 3mb for single gifs. Double gifs can be either 30/60 at your own discretion. Triple gifs can definitely be 60fps without worries about cutting out frames. The fast and slow options are the encoding speed once you’ve saved the avs, slow renders at a better quality but its barely noticeable so you can use fast every time

In the second box you can pick between resamplehq, debilinear and dithertools. All you need to know is that you choose debilinear every time and for every video format

Didn’t want to make another comparison gif so just reusing this one again, it’s slowed down so you can really see the different between 30fps and 60fps which you don’t normally feel too much if the gif is faster but definitely makes a difference. Notice the quality differences also between the first two, thats what avisynth helps with the most; making sure the quality loss is minimal

Photoshop

if you haven’t used avisynth to cut/resize your video then you can do that in photoshop, although I recommend that you cut the video first in another editing program so there’s less loading time and strain on photoshop itself (I use to use Adobe Premiere for this)

Importing/Resizing

Import it into Photoshop (File > Import > Video Frames to Layers) 

Match the settings to these

Select the part you want with the slider on the right and hit okay

Once it’s all into Photoshop, make sure you have the timeline/animation window open (Window > Timeline) and you should be able to see all the frames of your gif

If you’ve used avisynth you only need to crop it (Image > Canvas Size; and input in the desired size of your gif) otherwise you’ll need to crop it and then down size it to the desired gif size (Image > Image Size; setting width to either 540, 268, 177/178). Remember to set it to Bicubic and locking the width when you resize it

delete all the unwanted frames from your gifs

Sharpening

At this point I normally apply topaz (so refer below) otherwise you can do standard sharpening now

Select all your frames and layers and then convert it to a video timeline (bottom left of the timeline window)

Convert your layers to a smart object (Filter > Convert to Smart Object)

Then use Smart Sharpening (Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen)

These are the settings that I used before, feel free to tweak them to whatever you like. (Note that .ts files resized with avisynth rarely need to be sharpened at all because sometimes they already look over sharp, and thus we use topaz to clean them up)

After you’re happy with your sharpening, flatten the layers back to frames, make sure your gif is on the first frame (top right hand corner of the timeline (Convert Frames > Flatten Frames to Clips) and then create the frames again (Convert Frames > Make Frames from Clips)

Click the bottom left again to change your video timeline back to frame view and delete the first frame (it should be blank) and your first layer (it should be the one thats still a smart object)

Now everything should look like it did before you did your sharpening except now your gif will be sharpened

Colouring

I’m not really going to tell you how to colour your gifs because everyone does them differently and it’s also kind of each individual’s signature thing, like often I can tell who’s gif it is just by the way its coloured. Things to note here that too many colours and over saturation will lead to your gif file being extremely large. If you want to lower the file size of your gif it’s helpful to note that darkening the blacks and/or brightening the whites helps a lot. Colouring overall can drastically change your gifs so much. Here’s an example

of course you don’t want to change the colours so heavily every time but its just an example of what’s possible

Timing

To change timing (speed) for your gif you just need to select all your frames and then click on the arrow at the bottom of any of the frames and someone will pop up for you to input the time. Generally this is what I use for my gifs

0.02/0.03/0.04 for 60fps

0.04/0.05/0.06 for 30fps

Exporting

After all your colouring and timing is done you just need to export your gif (File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)), double check that your gif is less than 3mb (in the bottom left) and also here are my export settings. Never lower the colours unless your gif is black and white or you’ll probably lose quality

200212 update: gif size limits have been increased and can reach up to 8mb but have exponential loss in quality the larger the file size. The optimal size is to remain under 3.5mb-4mb, another larger and you’ll start to notice a loss in quality. 

Topaz

I’m not going to tell you where and/or how to download topaz because you can probably look that up yourself, there are a bunch of tutorials how on tumblr/youtube etc so you can sort that out. I use Topaz Denoise and Topaz Clean. Topaz Denoise does exactly what you think it does, it removes the noise from your gifs and it helps clean everything up. Topaz Clean is basically the same principle of sharpening but it’s a lot nicer and doesn’t over sharpen like smart sharpening does most of the time. Topaz takes a lot longer than regular sharpening because it processes it frame by frame so if you don’t want to bother and wait for it that’s alright.

Following the same two steps as the sharpening section of the photoshop tutorial, you’ll have a video timeline and a smart object

Then apply Denoise first (Filter > Topaz Labs > Topaz Denoise)

Play around with the settings as you see fit

Then do the same for Clean (Filter > Topaz Labs > Topaz Clean)

After you’re happy with the settings you’ll need to flatten the frames back (refer above to the sharpening section), and then just put on your psd like normal

Sometimes topaz isn’t as noticeable but when compared to original and smart sharpening it’s more noticeable

Smart Sharpen, while it does sharpen the gif also increases how grainy it is so for gifs which are originally grainy it’s not a good solution. Meanwhile topaz sharpens it without increasing the grain and can also reduce it. (The gifs above aren’t that grainy so smart sharpening doesn’t look that bad)

Okay so this is a pretty comprehensive post about everything and anything I know about photoshop and gif-making in general, it outlines all the little steps I take to make my gifs look really nice and just for an overall comparison to show you that the little things really add up

But then again “blind” really isnt as much of an accurate description as “skillfully decieved” would be. I heard the same things everyone else did “Rachael cheated on me. Rachael did this. I loved her and she did this to me” But one thing remains the same.

Not one person is told how you cheated on her just as much as she cheated on you. You never, not once, focus on the mistakes YOU make that lead up to the destruction of the relationship. No one knew about phynix, a fake girl you would run back to every time things went south with rachael and you. Not one person knew how you made the very bed you lay in now.

And thats the thing with you. You always will do everything possible to avoid taking responsibility for the way things end up. Its always poor you, look at what they did to you, how could they do this when you loved them so much? Why couldnt they just listen. You always do so much.

But youre just a repeat offender… yourw just a cowardly little kid who refuses to face up to the consequences of his actions.
