D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.

Hawk/BJ happy style. I have a feeling I'm missing out on some decent Hawkeye fic I might otherwise like because of this, but I just can't get into that Hawkeye/BJ happily ever after vibe. Earnestly shipping them would also probably help me get through a few of the more sloggy chunks of the later seasons - though on the flipside shipping them in a fucked up way helps me enjoy a lot of the weird conflict episodes, so it's not a bad tradeoff there.

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. I've said the whole BJ is interesting because of his flaws thing a lot so let's go with a different Mash character for this: Mulcahy is sweet and I love his friendship with Klinger.

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

Evil Hawk/BJ fic 😈 I want misery I want unhappy endings I want psychosexual torment I want resentment I want it to be fucked up.

This feels spoiled of me lol because there are absolutely some great historically accurate feeling fics, but I always want more gay Mash fic that feels like it's set in the 1950s.

And more fic that really leans into the misery of the setting, the draftees imprisoned in a nightmare vibe. The army brass are jailers and the draftees all hate their lives and I want to feel that at least as much as I feel it in the show.

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).

I'm into canon divergence moreso than new settings, so AU where Frank was kept as temporary CO for at least a few months after Henry died. Hawk bites the bullet and seduces him to redress the balance of power and secure his allyship.

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending? 

Gonna keep this Mash themed, so my Hawkeye is fine after the war headcanon - better than most of the cast. He goes home, spends a few months in Crabapple Cove, another few months in Europe, returns, gets his job in Boston back, returns to his pre-war social circle, falls in love with some dude unconnected to the war, and lives happily ever after.

It's a bit exaggerated to say I'd die defending it lol, I don't mind Hawkeye miserable to some extent post canon in fic (and have written it myself), and I get why it's a popular headcanon. But I'm married to my version of post-war Hawkeye like a year out, and idk if I could get into fic where he's like, depressed and struggling and/or isolates himself for years on end.

The lady who's nasty to Trapper in the department store (Boston - Part Two/Chapter 21) is just one of my great aunts. Do not like her.

9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

There were some changes in Mating Habits specifically between the outline and the actual fic! BJ was originally supposed to figure things out much slower. He was too clever and went to the library without my permission lmao

10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?

Beejtraphawk as the ship is 100% the product of the people who were involved behind the scenes in most of the outlining. Given it's an extraordinarily Trapper-centric verse it was always going to be traphawk, but the incomparable @ RemyFire did a huge portion of the outlining and their BJ is phenomenal, so he became a massive presence in the story. Also helps that beejtraphawk is my favorite MASH ship :3

11: What do you like best about this fic?

This thing is 100k (so far) so I've got a few things!

The little addition to The Interview, Chapter 6. I watched that episode and Hawk fucking possessed me, I don't think I've ever gotten his voice quite so well and I don't think I ever will again.

Essentially the entirety of Crabapple Cove - Part Four/Chapter Ten. The dinner scene with Daniel, the hallucination of Hawk, the prose poetry section, the conversation with Daniel afterwards... I really think I nailed every single beat in that chapter and it's far and away my favorite piece of it.

The Frankenstein pieces in the entirety of Boston/Part Four! Particularly the resolution to it in Boston - Part Seven/Chapter 27.

Also Morel. Love her.

12: What do you like least about this fic?

ough. I'm still in the process of writing it so I haven't done too much reflection on this, but initial thoughts are that I think my BJ characterization is a little weak. I'm doing my best but he's a serious enigma to me, and Part Four is from his perspective so.... idk. I think it's probably narcissistic but I generally enjoy my own fics!

Actually, to be fair, I think my smut's a little weak, too. I'm not great at internal dialogue so smut scenes tend to fall a little short imo, but I'm working on that! Practice makes perfect yadda yadda

5: What part was hardest to write?

Okay this is an insane answer but that fic came to me practically fully formed. The main problem was that I was trying to write smut while on a road trip in the back seat of the car with my parents. Genuinely I felt like I was transferring a story from the ether into the computer with barely any input from my brain however it was written while desperately trying to make sure that the window wasn't reflecting my screen and also without looking embarrassed. Literally in the middle of the smut scene I was interrupted to have a serious conversation about world politics and then I just went back to it. This was definitely not the answer you expected but it's the answer you're getting

this is what my spreadsheets look like for kits. (mistkit is a canon cat, or he'd get a full entry like silverkit.) i add some descriptors onto kits as i write allegiances, but i track mates purely so i know what information to put into my litter generator.

sometimes i have a father who i don't mention, sometimes i just assume it's a loner or something. depends on the litter.

the reason i bring this up is because of Overhead. overhead is my enemy. i've got about...3k lines for shadowclan atm. it's split into three files because the markdown in-editor formatter breaks down at a certain point. it also slows down my files, makes it harder to find unique footnote codes for each kit, and makes searching for a particular cat harder.

so i face a dual faceted problem: for every new piece of information i track, i take up more space. but some information that's not strictly necessary, i do want to track.

so, what do? i don't know. i haven't found a good solution for lgbt+ kitties, much as i want there to be one. tracking mates and birth parents is hard, and something that is almost never worth it. while my family tree app allows two sets of birth parents, it tends to make things extremely hectic, so i only use it for very specific situations.

(the three, the litter dovewing and poppyfrost coparent, etc.)

i'm always mulling it over, and i don't have a great answer. even if i did have lgbt+ ships, i don't usually list mates out publicly, and so i'm not sure how much it would even come up. i try to only phrase things as "having kits together," with the intention of: you don't have to view them as being in a romantic relationship.

sometimes i do have explicit not-couples raising kits. pinesong and her siblings are raised by dovewing and poppyfrost, who are neither their birth parents nor in a relationship, and pinesong has kits with lionblaze, but he's explicitly a surrogate.

so -- if anyone has suggestions, i am open to taking them. but for the mean time, you know -- know that i don't list mates for a reason.

if you have opinions and feelings on these little stat block kitties, i fully support whatever you feel about them.

y'know like -- okay navigating the family tree to find two cats who are alive at the same time is harder than it appears, but if you want. idk. dawnpelt and ivypool to be cross-clan girlfriends, i support that.

i'm writing stuff up for y11 at the moment, which means i'm starting to face down "what comes next" for wbcd. do i repeat? do i start even earlier for kicks? do i keep going and just make up my own plots as i go? do i do the ten survivors or w/e thing and pick up from there? do i just stop? i'm not sure. (opinions on that also welcome.)

that said, at some point, i'm going to have to stop, evaluate my process, and make adjustments. there are things i'd like to tweak, systems i'd like to improve, etc., and i'm going to want to do that over a clean breaking point.

things i'm looking to improve include the deputy picking process, the general mate picking process (since i don't consider clan beauty standards, but i think doing so would lead to more distinct looking cats), how injuries are dealt with, and lgbt+ kitties.

most things, i have my own solutions for, but i'm stuck for the lgbt+ cats issue.

tl/dr: there aren't any official ones because i don't have a low-overhead way of tracking it, and also because i assume not every pair of cats that has kits together is mates, even if i don't always make that explicit. if anyone has suggestions, i'll happily consider them.

DIPPER !!! that was the struggle from the first question ! dude is just trying his best. literally just wants knowledge and everyone around him is unintentionally actively making it difficult and i know that is kind of an oxymoron but i am Correct. he's so awkward (mood) and funny without trying to be and just like. i would want to be his friend. like, i wish i was as good of a sister to my little sister as dipper is to mabel. also he's always the butt of jokes and like... i feel that... me too, buddy lol

most people said i'm like mabel, and i can Definitely see that ! i just think that the biggest difference between us is that she is like super obsessed with romance and i didn't even want to date in high school because i didn't want to waste my time (as bad as that sounds lol) and also she is very extroverted and confident and. i am not either of those things :) then again, mabel has a pet pig and i Love pigs... also she Would make friendship bracelets. so, honestly, i think i'm a mix of dipper and mabel lol

favorite pairing

tbh i don't ship anything in that show, and that's kind of one of the reasons why i love it so much? wendy was just an unobtainable summer crush that would never be able to actually happen and all of mabel's romances failed because she wasn't emotionally mature enough to be in a relationship yet. the show is about family first and foremost, and that's something that i really love about it:)

ooo this is literally So Hard. okay, the first one that comes to mind tbh is in sock opera when bill is taunting mabel and is like "who would risk [it] for their dumb sibling hahhahaha" and mabel just has that oh moment and goes "dipper would" and then ruins her own play for her brother... ugh it gets me every time. but i also love that moment in dreamscapers when they first get there and the whole conversation with bill... God it makes me laugh so hard. then there's the moment in scary-oke when stan is like "kid, i've always known" AHHHH EMOTIONS !!!
